In early 2013, the New Heroes & Pioneers publishing house – based in Malmö, Sweden – was little more than the kernel of an idea in our minds. Our plan was to develop and publish a range of coffee table books containing a smart, interesting and eclectic mixture of art, culture and fashion. What made this concept unique, was that we were, right from the beginning, dedicated to being a vehicle for discovering and promoting new and unknown artists whose singular styles and perspectives make them stand out. The concepts of ‘making human connections’ and ‘giving back’ were woven into the fabric of the corporate culture and have become a clear and conscious part of every project since the company’s inception. We are based in Malmö with members in Netherlands, United Kingdom and France. We are a mix of partners coming from the publishing, editing, photography, journalism and business world, with a same passion for Culture and Art. PS. If you would like to find the ISBN numbers, release dates and other numbers and figures, check the very last pages. We gathered everything like that in one place. DS.

BOOK:

Mindful Encounters Photography by Jens Lennartsson

MINDFUL ENCOUNTERS is a thought-provoking collection of travel photography that gives you an extraordinary view of ordinary lives. Instead of relying on sophisticated equipment, photographer Jens Lennartsson uses curiosity, empathy and trust to make meaningful connections and take you off the beaten path with him. The stories he captures are exotic and instantly familiar at the same time. His photography reveals one simple truth: No matter where you are in the world, people are far more alike than we realize. Jens’ obsessive eye for detail, from a stray dog by the roadside to words written on a t-shirt, adds remarkable depth and significance to each individual story he tells.

BOOK SERIES:

The French Kiss Series An artistic point of view about the French kiss phenomenon THE FRENCH KISS SERIES explores a phenomenon that has been known world-wide for a hundred years. It came about because of the French people’s much enjoyed reputation for being adventurous and passionate about sex. The actual kiss is most often described as being slow and sensual, embodying the essence of intimacy, eroticism, sexuality and romanticism. Without setting any guidelines or restrictions, we asked five different photographers to interpret the French kiss in their own unique way and THE FRENCH KISS SERIES is the result. The books demonstrate that people’s perception of the French kiss does not always correspond with reality. For instance, it doesn’t have to take place between two teenagers below the Eiffel Tower with birds singing and music swelling in the background. The French kiss can also be funky, filthy, dramatic or exquisitely ordinary. By granting our commissioned photographers their artistic freedom, THE FRENCH KISS SERIES incorporates various styles and techniques very much like the French kiss itself – sometimes it is wild and sensual and at other times- sweet and innocent. While some images will attract readers with amorous, dusky, black and white depictions of the entwined, others burst through devoted embraces in a torrent of colour. BOOK:

Who Is Anna Andersson? Portraits of Sweden’s most popular name

Thousands of Swedish women share the country’s most popular name – Anna Andersson. Besides their name and nationality, do they have anything else in common? In 2014, photographer Meredith Andrews travelled the length of Sweden to find out. From a tattoo artist to a priest, a child to a 99-year old, Meredith found astonishing diversity within this statistically significant group of women who all answer to the same name. WHO IS ANNA ANDERSSON? is a visual account of 50 women who, at least superficially, share the same identity. This collection of intimate portraits reveals what unites and distinguishes people with a common name. The photographs combine personal stories with a captivating glimpse of life in contemporary Sweden and offer a new perspective on a national character. Whether you’re interested in foreign cultures, naming conventions or simply love peering into the lives of complete strangers, this book will fascinate you, no matter how many times you flip through the pages.

BOOK SERIES:

The Sins Series 7 Deadly Cultural Sins THE SIN SERIES is an exciting and edgy collection of seven related photographic booklets – 7 DEADLY CULTURAL SINS – showcasing seven photographer’s visions of a traditional sin of their choice, each connected firmly to culture. To be able to enjoy culture in the form of art, music and literature is a luxury for many, and for some, it is maybe even a sin. This series pushes the boundaries of sin and temptation even further by inviting photographers to show us their ideas about cultural indulgence, a lack of access to culture, and the inextricable roles of culture in sin and sin in culture. Think about the ‘gluttony’ of someone visiting all of the world’s major art museums just to say it has been done, but having no meaningful memories of the exhibits, or the ‘greed’ of an individual who owns a splendid pipe organ but refuses to let anyone else ever hear it played. THE SIN SERIES booklets will present the powerful artwork of each photographer with a visual emphasis on the excesses of the cultural world. Not afraid to be controversial, New Heroes & Pioneers embraces the opportunity that ‘culture as sin’ gives us to promote photographers who have strong artistic points of view. THE SIN SERIES flies in the face of the ordinary and predictable, to bring you art you will think about, talk about, argue about and perhaps even disagree with. No matter what you feel when you look through this book, one thing is certain: you will find yourself reconsidering your usual view of the luxury of culture. So… go ahead. Pick your sin. Oh, did we mention that the hard cover limited edition is a sin just by itself? COLLABORATIVE WORK / DECEMBER 2014

BOOK:

SHARE A book you’ll like so much you will want to get rid of it

SHARE is a carefully selected blend of pictures and illustrations by different artists who are scattered all over the world. But the SHARE concept is much more than that – it also includes the notion of participation and involvement. To start with, New Heroes & Pioneers editors have chosen the SHARE artists in conjunction with a social media vote designed to find those special people whose work falls into specific categories (such as modern, not famous, smart or witty, thought provoking, reflective or diverse). Each featured artist presents a single piece of work along with a short description or text. Even though the artists have already been chosen, you can still take part! SHARE contains 50 works of art, each in a two-page format. The size is optimized and every page is perforated so that you can use the pages as individual works of art. Tear out your favourites and you will instantly have a beautiful image to hang on the wall. We believe in the importance of sharing and hope you will consider giving some of the pictures in SHARE to your friends and family.

CREATIVES WE LOVE:

Linn Elaine Dahlgren Interview and text Francois Lebled

Photos Linn Elaine Dahlgren

At New Heroes & Pioneers, we are highly interested in Scandinavian minimalism, even though some of us have a completely different heritage. Francois - our head publisher - who could best be described as a preppy Parisian with a twist of Hipster sat down with the Swedish photographer Elaine Inn to learn more about the phenomena.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF “SCANDINAVIAN” WHEN IT COMES TO ART IN GENERAL, AND YOUR ART IN PARTICULAR?

Geometric. Subtle. Quiet. Bright. Of substance. These are characteristics of Scandinavian style. Overall, I find it mostly conceptual. Something you have to put yourself in, in order to understand or feel. Geometrical elements are evident. Even subtle details, often unpredictable. The surface is clean and organised, although the process has been the exact opposite. A result of a complex path that ultimately results in simplicity. IS BEING A SCANDINAVIAN ARTIST PART OF YOUR BRAND OR IS MINIMALISM YOUR TRADEMARK?

I am well aware that what I do would be defined in the category of Scandinavian minimalism. But I don’t think like that. By putting myself in that compartment, I restrict myself and everything that inspires. It’s bigger than that. The road to such an uncluttered surface is more complex than people think. I have gone round and round and set myself in stark contrast to the minimalist, as well as for maximalism. For me, the result is the same. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE AESTHETIC OF YOUR PICTURES AND WHAT

YOU ARE AIMING TO CONVEY?

I study how white has an impact on people and myself. How white confronts people when it becomes a clear encounter with one’s self. It can evoke discomfort and an empty feeling. But sometimes it’s the only colour that makes people calm and satisfied. Right now it’s an obsession for me. White gets away with so much. What I want is to transform white into something slightly rougher. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER? IT’S COULD BE A HARD CAREER PATH.

I’ll be honest, I have never defined myself as a photographer. I think ‘artist’ is closer, maybe because I study at Konstfack. But what’s the difference? Definitions and titles are hard to handle. For me, photography has evolved to become one of the most important tools for my artistic process. Photography is as much sketching, as it is documentation or completion. BEING A STUDENT AND A PHOTOGRAPHER - WHAT’S THE IDEAL MIX TO MAKE SURE YOU CAN FOLLOW THAT DUAL YET UNIFIED PATH?

I won’t allow my process to get too deadly serious. Letting go of control and letting myself be guided by the

mistakes- that often is what inspires me the most. But it’s also the hardest thing to do. This process occurs most often when questions and problems arise that have to be solved. For example, when it comes to materials or tools that I have to learn to deal with. I have to drop the idea of time.

I think that you have to immerse yourself in whatever it is you are considering. People are manic when it comes to understanding. You’ll find the answers if you stop trying to ‘get it’ and focus more on just feeling it.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE YOUR INSPIRATIONS FROM? HOW DOES SWEDEN, THE COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN, INSPIRE YOU?

I’ll be working with a Hasselblad camera for an extremely detailed, large scale format. There will be a series of experiments on how something fleshy and grotesque can seem to appear very attractive and beautiful. Until the viewer sees what it is. I want it to be psychologically stressful.

I try to go to the subconscious for inspiration. Examine what my brain is registering. Chance inspires me, mistakes as well. Everything I can’t control. Sweden as a country does not inspire me, or, maybe it does, but on a subconscious level. SOME MIGHT PLACE YOUR ART INTO THE CATEGORY OF “SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALISM”, IS IT A PLUS OR A MINUS WHEN EXPORT ING YOUR TALENT ABROAD?

It can be both a plus and a minus. I am inspired and learn from many cultures, even if it looks like I have a “typical Scandinavian” portrayal. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SCANDINAVIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS LIKE YOURSELF? ANY ADVICE FOR FOREIGNERS WANTING TO BETTER UNDERSTAND SCANDINAVIAN ART?

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AND YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS?

Elaine Inn is one of the five photographers we are featuring in The Guide To Extraordinary Culture 2015, being released in January 2015.

BOOK:

NH&P Guide To Extraordinary Culture 2015 New Heroes & Pioneers GUIDE TO EXTRAORDINARY CULTURE is an assemblage of re-edited and original content created throughout 2014. We have been busy re-purposing much of our material for use in this guide, so even if you have already seen it in our online magazine, quarterly publications or anywhere else, look again, because you will have a chance to see it one more time, all scrubbed up and with a fresh face on. We also have volumes of material that, for editorial reasons, ended up on the cutting room floor. The decision to not use material is always difficult, and in spite of the fact that it wasn’t chosen the first time around, much of this left out material is first rate and print-worthy. To that end, we are adding the best of these ‘cut articles’ to New Heroes & Pioneers GUIDE TO EXTRAORDINARY CULTURE along with a good portion of specially developed, original material. We know you will be as glad as we are that all of this, old and new, is being published together between two covers. New Heroes & Pioneers GUIDE TO EXTRAORDINARY CULTURE is a guide in a true sense, but unlike other guides, it isn’t only advice on how to get dressed, where to go, what to eat or the best way to find a cheap ticket. Instead, it goes far beyond typical recommendations to inspire you to broaden your cultural horizons. We want you to be curious, attentive and reflective. We hope you will see street art differently or enjoy a festival in a way you have never thought about. That when you go out, you think about why a particular café feels like a good place to while away the hours or, that when you become brave enough to change your POV on a shocking art exhibit, your life will be enriched. Growing Up Kid’s photographic views of life and progress in their communities

New Heroes & Pioneers proudly presents GROWING UP, a collection of colour and black and white photographs taken by children and young people from developing nations in different parts of the world. These artists, aged 12 to 21, are experiencing progress and forward movement in their home countries and show us, through the use of photography, their personal experiences of this change. Whether it is a new pump that provides precious water for growing crops, a factory that creates paying jobs or a new school, positive changes of all types are happening. Each of these young people chronicles the transformations they see through the filter of their own eyes. They use their imaginations and individual creative styles to give us a view of their lives and communities in an exceptional way that no conventional media outlet can. GROWING UP also includes wonderful and inspiring ‘behind the scenes’ shots of the enthusiastic, young photographers at work. It is a marvellous display of hope and a rare glimpse into their daily lives.

BOOK:

Collecting Words by Brian Fouhy

Brian Fouhy is a visual poet of the modern variety. Working in the medium of Instagram, this American captures words and phrases that are tattooed across the pavement and handwritten on the walls. He then puts them together to create short stories. The result is a visual compilation whose sum is quite different from the individual pieces. Over 30 stories are contained in this edition. In it, you’ll find humour and irony, often found mingling together. What unifies these contrasting images is their humanity, coupled often with a sense of loneliness. Brian’s work demonstrates the similarities between the capturing of a moment through the lens of a camera and through the spilling of ink upon the pavement. Both are feelings stamped in a single moment in time. The images themselves often feature forgotten corners in the urban landscape void of life. Truly a contemporary artist, Brian uses the breadth of modern technology to create a style completely his own. And you, have you ever told a story with pictures? Is there a photo- poet that stirs inside of you?

Illustrations by Marcus Reed By Marcus Reed

Sculpting his work down to a few well selected colours and forms, UK artist Marcus Reed provides us a glimpse into one illustrator’s approach to modern minimalism. His (often iconic) subjects are presented in a spacious and poppy universe, one that is easy on the eyes. This hardcover edition collection of past and new works invites us to journey through the land of Marcus Reed’s imagination and the world around him. Curated by the artist himself, this upcoming edition is custom made for lovers of what’s hip and stylish. Printed on thick matte stock, we’ll see some of his well known works, including the famous Adidas campaign that takes us around the world to the hippest cities and capitals. We’ll travel back in time to the heyday of football, when it was good, as he invites us to rally with him against the modern version of the sport. We’ll discover what trendy mashup occurs when hipsters get styled in minimal Disney fashion. Then spin our wheels through the ages as we join him on the evolution of cycling. This Marcus Reed retrospective is a perfect example of what NH&P loves to radiate- highlighting an artist whose passion and refined craft makes our collective heart beat a bit faster from a perfect mix of colour and shape.

CREATIVES WE LOVE:

Tärnsjö Garveri Photos Daniel Månsson

As a publishing house very proud of our Scandinavian roots, we are always curious to discover other types of Scandinavian houses of some sort who possess unique talent, style or story. While researching content for our online magazine, and with Jens, our creative director, who is also passionate about leather goods, we discovered Tärnsjö Garveri. We asked them to tell us more about their story, craftsmanship, philosophy and mainly … what it’s like to be a Scandinavian House of Leather. Tärnsjö Garveri is ‘not a newly conceived notion’, as they would put it themselves. It was founded in 1873 by lake Tärnsjön, 130 km northwest of Stockholm and is still located at the exact same spot.

Tärnsjö Garveri (Tärnsjö Tannery) - as every other company founded about 141 years ago - started as a purpose driven business, offering solutions to other companies in need of aid to execute their own business. This northern Swedish tannery helped the farmers in Uppland to equip the horses with high quality harnesses to make the plowing of the fields a walk in the park. The product range might have both developed and expanded since, but the original purpose is still a cornerstone in the company philosophy but over the years it has evolved to incorporate the import of three elements: time, knowledge and material. These combined commodities are the ingredients that make the academic saddlers quarter values which dictate our decision making process. This means that it is okay to be “late” if you are irreplaceable, says Simon Hjälte, marketing director at Tärnsjö Garveri. Through time - and due to change in demands - Tärnsjö have transformed into a full service tannery. Still crafting harnesses, they have also launched their own line of bags and accessories, made from the hides of

Scandinavian animals. Through several kinds of handicraft - tanning leather, finishing leather and saddlery - every step from raw hide to bag is under one roof. Worth mentioning is that Tärnsjö is among the remaining 5% of tanneries worldwide who still execute the more time consuming art of vegetable tanning, using bark extracted from nature. Tärnsjö uses bark from the Mimosa tree. MADE IN SCANDINAVIA According to Simon Hjälte, being a Scandinavian house has both its pros and cons. - The biggest advantage with being Scandinavian in the retail world of anything, is the sense of reliability. But being Scandinavian in the retail world of leather means that you’ll have to fight against the luxury market in France or Italy and China, in the market’s lower priced section. Being “Scandinavian” is a description used mainly by non-Scandinavians. Hjälte explains that from their perspective, it would mean paying the same respect to the craftsmen as to the CEO. Nothing is “not thought through” before being handed over for the receiver’s evaluation. Mana-

ging that is hard to do and might be one of the reasons why Scandinavian design appears minimalistic to a broad audience. - The pursuit is far from effortless in achieving, but very easy in receiving. Focusing on the design perspective I think relates to the same philosophy; The rustic materials that we commonly use to make products has to be minimalistic in design, in order to be easily received, he explains. While Tärnsjö’s craft shares similarities with Italian and British artisanship, they claim to draw inspiration from Americans players such as Horween Tannery and how they manage to present their heritage in the branding. GOING GLOBAL The most recent development step in the company´s history started a year ago, private branded leather goods for a global market. The goal is to establish themselves as a natural choice of high quality leather, stepping into the match with the more southern European big bulls currently in the lead on the market. Hjälte is comparing it to becoming to leather what GORE TEX is to water resistant fabric.

- In the past we have tended to be a silent partner and subcontractor. That’s the reason why we have added the tag line; HOUSE OF LEATHER to our logo. But what does a relatively small player - from a country whose inhabitants are most often seen as cold and passive - have to go up against the massive leather giants already going full speed ahead on the market? Experience has taught us to allow more time to gather wisdom using patience and consideration before handing it over, explains Hjälte. I once expressed my frustration to an American friend with the fact that Swedes can be hard to get to know. Her answer was surprising - “That’s true, but there is a big difference between getting to know someone (the American) and earning their friendship (Swedes). Once you get to know a Swede you have earned a friend for life.” Maybe it will take some time to get the foot in the door, but when the small Swedish tannery gets into your vestibule, you might very well consider them your new best friends when it comes to leather goods.

BOOK:

SHARE Scandinavia A book you’ll like so much you will want to get rid of it. Again.

This second edition in the SHARE collection possesses all the same attributes of the original- an extraordinary selection of 50 artist’s works printed in 2 page format and meant for ripping out, for framing and for sharing. At New Heroes & Pioneers, we are very excited to present SHARE Scandinavia as the followup to the original. SHARE has been met with enthusiasm around the globe for lovers of art and design so SHARE Scandinavia is the next natural step in order to build on the concept. All too often we have connotations of art books being strictly for consumption at the coffee table. The SHARE concept enthusiastically abolishes this with a book that is meant to be held and deconstructed. Each featured artist presents a single piece of work along with a short description or text. The size is optimised and every page is perforated so that you can use the pages as individual works of art. SHARE Scandinavia will feature artists who work in a variety of mediums. Expect to be indulged in thoughtful works featuring minimalism, geometric shapes, austere sensuality and magic in the details. Travel from Sweden at Midsomer filled with evanescent blonde beauties, wild blooms weaved through their shimmering locks to the glacial fjords leading into the Norwegian Sea, over the castle of Hamlet and into thick forests lush with woodland foliage. Allow us to SHARE Scandinavia with you. COLLABORATIVE WORK / OCTOBER 2015

BOOK:

Hipster Safari How would you describe a hipster?

Hipster Safari is a collection of images of this human ‘genre’ featured in their preferred habitats. This lushly coloured edition captures the stylings and attitude that have spawned a global trend, with detailed portraits of what is fashionable in different areas of the world. The movement has also created a boom sound in the world of economy, with brands once expired being revived back in to life, and new ones in retro style cropping up as well as pop up shops selling upcycled wares. But how do they differ from each other in Scandinavia, Germany, Australia or Asia? And even more interesting: what is the common denominator hipsters share across the world? Cafés and restaurants, gastro, noodle bars and microbreweries. Hipsterism is not simply a bearded guy who makes his own mustard but rather a culture based on a renewed interest in going back to basics and putting quality at the forefront (a quality Scandinavian products have never forgotten to put at their core). Simplicity, losing the gold plating to let the natural finish shine through, and slowing down to appreciate process are also part of the movement. These are just some of the ideas inspired from this topical volume. Filled with essays and photos, we present this modern breed which has a growing economical, political, and cultural voice. BOOK SERIES:

The Not a Victims Series Victim or survivor?

When you read a title like that, what do you think? What images arise from your subconscious? The Not a Victims Series is a set of photography volumes from photographers that take the label and document their interpretation of it- the empowering one. Because victim can also mean survivor. When someone goes through an often horrific and painful experience, it transforms them in a way nothing else can. The result is imagery that portrays hope and increased humanity, hopefully evoking emotions that ultimately stir up warmth and light into soul. Each book features one photographer from around the globe, who will share his or her perception of victimhood and its implications. The series will demonstrate that the experience of being a victim is also a catalyst for metamorphic transformation, a change that happens at the core of who we are, fuelled by what we know to be inherently good and right.
