NEW HEROES & PIONEERS

CATALOGUE

Spring/Summer 2017 In early 2013, the New Heroes & Pioneers publishing house – based in Malmö, Sweden – was little more than the kernel of an idea in our minds. Our plan was to develop and publish a range of coffee table books containing a smart, interesting and eclectic mixture of art, culture and fashion. What made this concept unique, was that we were, right from the beginning, dedicated to being a vehicle for discovering and promoting new and unknown artists whose singular styles and perspectives make them stand out. The concepts of ‘making human connections’ and ‘giving back’ were woven into the fabric of the corporate culture and have become a clear and conscious part of every project since the company’s inception. We are based in Malmö with members in Netherlands, United Kingdom and France. We are a mix of partners coming from the publishing, editing, photography, journalism and business world, with a same passion for Culture and Art.

PS. If you would like to find the ISBN numbers, release dates and other numbers and figures, check the very last pages. We gathered everything like that in one place. DS.

FEELINGS of IMPERFECTION A Visual Expression of Timelessness

by Anna Malmberg & Anna Bjรถrkman

BOOK

Feelings of Imperfection A Visual Expression of Timelessness

Through a series of starkly contrasting images, interior stylist Anna Björkman and photographer Anna Malmberg have created a melancholic world that celebrates the feeling certain spaces tend to evoke within us. Feelings of Imperfection examines the duality between two worlds: the old and the new, the perfect and imperfect, the present and the past. By applying subtle decorative touches to abandoned buildings, Björkman inspired a new dialogue surrounding their respective histories, the timelessness of which Malmberg captured with intimate photographs that encourage viewers to read between the lines. Malmberg and Björkman hope to elicit an emotional response that will allow you to connect to these Feelings of Imperfection in a personal manner that will further stimulate a conversation between the past and the present. Every wall has its own history, every window a different view – in this book the artists invite you along on their journey to uncover these well-kept secrets and shine a new light on them.

31 Days A veganuary conversation

The traction stemming from imperatives based in ethics, sustainability, health and resource distribu- tionand has created a so-called Overton window* for veganism, i.e. a situation in which a fringe is- sue is moved into a position where the public is willing to talk about it. Despite the currency of the matter, on a one-to-one level, veganism is still hard to talk about, as it ties in with behavioural patterns founded in identity and tradition, there- fore making it a highly emotional subject, as well as a matter of philosophical / existential scope. The book is about creating an inspirational framework for the conversation, where it belongs: around a table.

BOOK SERIES

The Sins Series 7 Deadly Cultural Sins

THE SIN SERIES is an exciting and edgy collection of seven related photographic booklets – 7 DEADLY CULTURAL SINS – showcasing seven photographer’s visions of a traditional sin of their choice, each connected firmly to culture. To be able to enjoy culture in the form of art, music and literature is a luxury for many, and for some, it is maybe even a sin. This series pushes the boundaries of sin and temptation even further by inviting photographers to show us their ideas about cultural indulgence, a lack of access to culture, and the inextricable roles of culture in sin and sin in culture. Think about the ‘gluttony’ of someone visiting all of the world’s major art museums just to say it has been done, but having no meaningful memories of the exhibits, or the ‘greed’ of an individual who owns a splendid pipe organ but refuses to let anyone else ever hear it played. THE SIN SERIES booklets will present the powerful artwork of each photographer with a visual emphasis on the excesses of the cultural world. Not afraid to be controversial, New Heroes & Pioneers embraces the opportunity that ‘culture as sin’ gives us to promote photographers who have strong artistic points of view. THE SIN SERIES flies in the face of the ordinary and predictable, to bring you art you will think about, talk about, argue about and perhaps even disagree with. No matter what you feel when you look through this book, one thing is certain: you will find yourself reconsidering your usual view of the luxury of culture. So… go ahead. Pick your sin. Oh, did we mention that the hard cover limited edition is a sin just by itself? COLLABORATIVE WORK / JUNE 2017

ARTICLE

The Beauty in the Calm Interview with photographer Mark Sanders Written by Kathy Compton

Photos Mark Sanders

London based photographer Mark Sanders is a regular contributor to an array of well followed glossy and matte periodicals including Vanity Fair, Kinfolk and Cereal, among others. His style captures both observed and voyeuristic angles that echo the quiet and the calm. We had the opportunity to enquire further into some of his creative personal and professional pursuits as well as what feeds that creativity.

Let’s jump in with your personal projects – Daily Observations, which recently exhibited in London as well as Urbis, a newspaper of your own creation.  Daily Observations is an ongoing project based on my personal diaries that I have kept over the last 10 years; a visual diary of life. Observations of things that I see. The world around me. Everyday life.  Urbis evolved from an L S Lowry painting that I loved which depicted people walking to work in the factories in northern England. My translation from that was to observe people in London going to work. Although that was the inspiration, I was adapting and evolving the project each time I went out to document the people in the City of London. I soon noticed how the majority of workers felt like they were on a conveyor belt, heads down, engrossed in their phones or tablets, unaware of the beauty in their surroundings. Maybe I was naive to the impact technology really has on our lives. Do you explore avenues in any way with your personal projects that you don’t get the opportunity to do with your commissioned work? How do the two, commissioned / non-commissioned work, influence one another?  I think Urbis is a good example of that as it wasn’t commissioned, it was something I wanted to do off my own back. Initially it was going to be as an Instagram feed, Tumblr page, or a project on my website, but once I had shot it, I really wanted to share the images with people and show it in a more complete way and that is why I chose to

print the newspaper. I did have a lot of commissions following on from Urbis, and I guess that’s where the commercial element comes into it.  With Commissioned work there is a defined brief from a client/brand. We collaborate as a team to create imagery for a specific outlet, where as with my personal work I keep the brief open. I give myself guidelines to start with but will let them evolve organically as I progress through the project. I try and bring that way of working into my commercial work. It’s nice when a client is open to ideas and I can bring my influence to a campaign. My personal projects also stimulate and inspire people to commission me. Directors and Art Buyers hopefully pick up on small elements or details within an image that I have shot. You work with a host of different publications and clients – which types of projects do you naturally gravitate to?  I work in both men’s and women’s fashion and advertising, bringing an observed and voyeuristic style, I like to be the observer and let the subjects be themselves within a scene, creating the story and I try not to influence or direct the action too much, I document what I see. I have brought this mantra to my still life commissions also, trying to give a more lifestyle / observed feel. Adding to that – Is there anything that you you have a minimum of tolerance for or try to steer clear from?  There isn’t really anything that I would steer clear of. I like to be challenged in my work, so I am happy to take them on.

In your work, do you enjoy working with different creatives or do you prefer sticking with more of a core team?  I still work with a few creatives that I have done for nearly 15 years when we were all starting out together. I like the understanding that comes with working with those people. I do also feel it is important to work with new creatives too, it keeps the work fresh and encourages me to explore different channels. Let’s talk a little bit about your aesthetic – there is a luxe quality, an effortlessness to your work that always seems to always spotlight just the right detail- is that an accurate portrayal? How would you describe your style?  I have heard those comments on many occasions, and I guess I would agree with those words. It’s always very hard to describe your own style, but an Art Director once said that my work had a ‘calmness’ to it, and I quite like that. I imagine that if you were dropped into Mexico City on the Day of the Dead, you’d still make it look like the most elegant and relaxed of affairs – do you have any tricks you’d like to share that help you achieve your trademark style?  There are no tricks in what I do. I always find it interesting how a group of creatives may document or capture the same subject. I suppose it’s quite flattering that someone observing my images would be able to recognise my style. There is a distinct warmth to your images; like mellow gold or the eternal setting (or rising) of the sun. Did

you grow up under that sun or do you now command it into your work because it was withheld from you due to English weather? Please tell us a little bit about your background and what got you into photography in the first place.  I grew up in Devon where I went to college and first had the opportunity to try photography and experiment in the darkroom, it was my tutor Patrick who really inspired me to learn my about this medium. I knew that I would want to move to London and further pursue a career in photography. I moved to London in 2001 and began assisting fashion and advertising photographers, all the time shooting my own work and soon began picking up editorials and a few commissions. I don’t feel there is any direct connection between my style of photography and my upbringing, but maybe there is something in my subconscious that I don’t see myself. If not for photography what do you think you might have decided to spend your efforts on?  I always fancied the idea of working with wood, so a furniture maker would be a job I would enjoy. You have mentioned before that you try and do very little altering to your images when it comes to your personal work. Is that true of all your work? How do you approach photo editing as opposed to getting what you want in the set up of the shot?  I always try and keep as true to the original subject matter as possible. I do colour work to my images in the same way I would have done with hand print-

ing. I think it’s important to be able to adapt to the situation however, and sometimes a commercial client can require more post production for many different reasons.

reflected in how I keep my sketchbooks/ diaries. I keep them very precisely, I always thought a sketchbook should be rough doodles and scribbles, but I found that wasn’t me.

Are you someone who prefers to be methodical and plan significantly beforehand or do you like to be a bit more improvisational?  I’m a big fan of improvising and letting moments happen organically, I think it’s easy to over plan a shoot and in turn take away a special feeling that was there in the moment. When I was starting out I would story board before a shoot, and soon realised that it didn’t really work for me.

Looking forward, what are you excited about delving into? Where can you see your style and projects mutating?  I am planning another form of printed material and I’m currently shooting a few different personal projects. I also plan to take the Daily Observations Exhibition to other cities within the UK and Europe after it’s success in London.

Your work is often noted for its clean lines and evocative of contemplative scenarios. Moments suspended in time. We at New Heroes and Pioneers share an affinity for Scandinavian style which we think also shares these particular qualities. Can you share with us your thoughts on the popularity of this style and also – where you think it’s headed?  I am aware there is a trend for the Scandinavian style right now, and the fact that my work often consists of clean lines and contemplative scenarios, then I suppose it does have a nod to the same Scandinavian aesthetic. There are always trends that come and go, and I guess this style will also have a certain longevity. It will be interesting to see what the next trend is. I look back at my early work, even the images I created shooting those first rolls of film at college, and there is certainly the beginnings of my style, using clean lines, simplicity and minimalism. This is also

Who and what are your big influencers? What do you do when you want to summon the muse?  I’m influenced by what I see daily; the things and people around me therefore I would consider that my muse.

Inspiration is to be found everywhere, it’s simply a matter of having the aligning perspective. MAGAZINE

NH&P Handbook to Extraordinary Culture 2017 New Heroes & Pioneers HANDBOOK TO EXTRAORDINARY CULTURE is an assemblage of re-edited and original content created throughout 2014. We have been busy re-purposing much of our material for use in this guide, so even if you have already seen it in our online magazine, quarterly publications or anywhere else, look again, because you will have a chance to see it one more time, all scrubbed up and with a fresh face on. We also have volumes of material that, for editorial reasons, ended up on the cutting room floor. The decision to not use material is always difficult, and in spite of the fact that it wasn’t chosen the first time around, much of this left out material is first rate and print-worthy. To that end, we are adding the best of these ‘cut articles’ to New Heroes & Pioneers HANDBOOK TO EXTRAORDINARY CULTURE along with a good portion of specially developed, original material. We know you will be as glad as we are that all of this, old and new, is being published together between two covers. New Heroes & Pioneers HANDBOOK TO EXTRAORDINARY CULTURE is a guide in a true sense, but unlike other guides, it isn’t only advice on how to get dressed, where to go, what to eat or the best way to find a cheap ticket. Instead, it goes far beyond typical recommendations to inspire you to broaden your cultural horizons. We want you to be curious, attentive and reflective. We hope you will see street art differently or enjoy a festival in a way you have never thought about. That when you go out, you think about why a particular café feels like a good place to while away the hours or, that when you become brave enough to change your POV on a shocking art exhibit, your life will be enriched.

TOM BLACHFORD Website www.tomblachford.com

Photography for me is giving in to an impulse to capture or explore things going on around me that for whatever reason might suddenly take my interest. I’m obsessed with the way the camera is able to warp both time and perspective to capture the world in ways I was never able to see with my eyes. Though my work is varied in subject matter, it all somewhat follows this compulsion. I have found by simply observing and capturing the mundane around me from a new perspective or in a new light, it can elevate places or events to a level that people can instantly connect with in a new way. Whether it is amateur paddle boarders shot from 1,000 ft. in the air or homes and landscapes shot in different conditions, my work seeks to force a double take on what has been overlooked and under-appreciated. The most joy I get from photography is when I can capture something that was hiding in plain sight but no one has stopped to capture. Finding patterns, shapes and vistas in the man made and natural environments and collecting them like little prizes is what keeps me shooting and exploring. I’m an impatient person, so photography is an incredibly efficient way to be creative. Every time I press the shutter I can create something that didn’t exist a split second before. 12

Wasbar: a Laundrette Cafe on a Mission Trends come and go. Some become engrained into our everyday lives. Some entrepreneurs don’t let the dust settle before they innovate and improve. Meet the Belgians who took the laundrette cafe to a whole new level. Text by Nilay Kilinc

Photos by Arne Jennard Nick Proot

Yawn! Another laundrette / cafe combo you say? Haven’t we been here before, haven’t we done this already? To be honest, if you go to any cosmopolitan city laundrette, you’d be disappointed if the person changing up a note so you have coins for the dryer wasn’t also a runner-up in the Barista of the Year awards. Being social while doing one of the most tedious yet necessary personal chores feels pretty much of a routine for many of us. The popularity of the trend could be perceived as a manifestation of the millennial: young and independent, cultured and busy and make no bones about washing our dirty clothes in front of friends and strangers alike. Several European cities endowed these “social living-rooms”, hyping up the local professionals and university students. Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg et cetera. But, just as the idea was about to be laid aside to the “nothing-new” category, Belgium’s creativity capital went beyond the ordinary with Wasbar. Established in October 2012, Ghent-based Wasbar carried the concept to a leading-edge level with its distinguishable branding and innovative management strategy. The second and third stores were soon after opened in Kortrijk and Antwerp, reinforcing the solid identity of the chain.

Wasbar can be taught as a case study in entrepreneurial classes. So what did Wasbar do new? Co-founders Dries Henau and Yuri Vandenbogaerde spill the beans. — When we came up with the idea, we thought ourselves as the founders of the concept. After catching on with the comparative concepts throughout the world, our difference became more obvious. We created a space where you have the laundry machine right next to you: the bar and the laundrette are not separated by walls. In that sense it is the most-integrated laundrette and cafe/ bar concept created so far, said Dries. Its story is directly linked to the personal experiences of its co-founders. Dries and Yuri both studied in Ghent. They worked with marketing and brand activation and shared the same living space as a married couple. Living in a small apartment and not having space for a laundry machine, they had to visit their mothers for getting their laundry done. Observing that they were not the only ones who were dependant on their mums when it came to dirty boxers, they imagined the possibility of a place where people have access to Wi-Fi and reading materials, can enjoy a cup of coffee or cold beer, all while doing their laundry.

Lodestars Anthology: Pathways Lodestars Anthology: Pathways contains 7–10 of the best and most carefully selected paths and trails that we have traversed. This book explores and details those pathways, the people, the landscapes and the fascinating things we discovered along the way. The journeys we take have a start and an end point, but we, in this book, want to relish the bit in between. So whether this is a mountain pass in the Italian Alps where we meet highland shepherds, or sprawling, urban grids with a bevy of restaurants and contemporary design, we want to inspire the reader to follow these paths and take precious moments to engage in everything possible through their senses. The book is a guide to these pathways, but goes beyond this to capture and document the lives of the people we meet, the challenges of the trip and the culture and landscapes we find that inspire us to keep on adventuring.

Can Dagarslani “I'm an architect and definitely my architectural expertise has an influence on the space-object analysis. The perception of the space, the perspectives and the layers of it become a journey for me while creating my compositions. The geometries of the space itself play a key role, becoming as much a character in the visual narrative as the models themselves. Either an open white space can be contained boundless potential for movement and form, or an emerging domestic space expands and limits the model’s possibilities, directing and regulating their actions even as it helps to define their roles. My love for urbanism and architecture is evident in my organised quirkiness and my, sometimes sarcastic, game of the human form.” – Can Dagarslani

In HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT, you will follow up-and-coming Swedish photographer Jens Lennartsson on a journey around the world with images that capture the humanity and local character of every place he visits. Along the way you’ll improve your own photography skills with a selection of 100 tips designed by Jens to enhance your intuition and lend a new perspective on the people and places around you. Jens takes a minimalist approach to getting the best shots. By taking his lead, you will learn to open your eyes, observe, anticipate and work with what is around you. HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT teaches you to capture a mood, create an atmosphere, play with light and connect with people. You don’t need a better camera, more equipment or expensive software. You only need a fresh approach.

BY JENS LENNARTSSON / DECEMBER 2013

5 HIDE IN PL AIN SIGHT You’re bound to be noticed as soon as you arrive in a new place. But the longer you stay in the same location, the less attention you’ll attract. You become a part of the scene; part of the environment. Everyone will be less aware of you and the fact that you are taking pictures.

A month-long trip around Sri Lanka was coming to an end. I stayed at the gigantic colonial Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. A very narrow strip of beach, no more than ten feet wide, stretched for miles alongside the stone wall. During the day it was empty, but when the sun was about to set, thousands of Sri Lankans gathered to play Don’t rush away from a good photo spot. Hang in the waves. I was amazed by the light and the around for a while until you become a fly on the scene and came back evening after evening. wall and it will be easier to capture the scenes I walked around among the families, couples and in front of you. You and the people around you laughing children until the sun was nowhere to will feel increasingly comfortable with each other. be seen.

8 BACKGROU N D CH ECK There are generally three main layers in every photograph: the foreground, the subject and the background. The latter could make your picture pop or flop. Before you press the shutter, take a moment to think about what the background look like. The camera transforms three-dimensional reality into a two-dimensional picture and if the background is not thought through, it can ruin a great shot. Pay attention to what’s behind your subject.

I saw it from far away. The old, two-colored American car and the wall behind with the exact same colors, only inverted. It was so perfect I almost thought the driver had been aware of it and parked his car right there, just waiting for an attentive photographer to walk by. Sometimes the world’s colors come together in amazing ways. Pay attention to color schemes and you’ll be able to get great pictures.

18 TURN OUT TH E LIGHTS There is something called “correct exposure”, but I think this concept can be pretty deceptive. If you let your camera decide what the correct exposure is, you’ll sometimes end up with a picture that is far too bright. The camera has no feeling for mood and it will surely ruin a lot of beautiful scenes by choosing the wrong shutter speed. Try to underexpose scenes to capture a dark or calm feeling.

If you walk under a green concrete sign in Nuwara Eliya, you’ll enter the elementary school of this dusty city in southern Sri Lanka. Right inside the gate, hundreds of young kids played their country’s national sport – cricket – dressed in white pants and red woolen sweaters. On the field next to the school, a group of military men participated in a marching drill. When I was about to leave, I found a small door leading into the dim, hangar-like hall where a basketball tournament was being held. On the terrace I met this little boy and his big sister.

55 FRO M TH E OTH ER SIDE If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to forget the old always-keep-the-sun-at-your-back-whenyou-shoot rule that your dad taught you. It’s a bit tricky at first, but when you get the hang of it, backlighting is your best friend. I love the milky light created by sunbeams hitting the lens. Let sunlight hit the lens straight on or at an angle. The best time to take advantage of the backlight is one or two hours after sunrise or before sunset.

Before the beach was filled with tourists, beach towels and restaurant tables, a few fishermen tried their luck and threw small nets out into the water. While everyone else was sleeping, their eyes were sharp and alert, looking for a possible catch. On the beach a middle-aged man gazed at his friend with the net. The Thai fisherman was standing between me and the sun.

Mindful Encounters Photography by Jens Lennartsson

MINDFUL ENCOUNTERS is a thought-provoking collection of travel photography that gives you an extraordinary view of ordinary lives. Instead of relying on sophisticated equipment, photographer Jens Lennartsson uses curiosity, empathy and trust to make meaningful connections and take you off the beaten path with him. The stories he captures are exotic and instantly familiar at the same time. His photography reveals one simple truth: No matter where you are in the world, people are far more alike than we realize. Jens’ obsessive eye for detail, from a stray dog by the roadside to words written on a t-shirt, adds remarkable depth and significance to each individual story he tells.

The French Kiss Series An artistic point of view about the French kiss phenomenon

THE FRENCH KISS SERIES explores a phenomenon that has been known world-wide for a hundred years. It came about because of the French people’s much enjoyed reputation for being adventurous and passionate about sex. The actual kiss is most often described as being slow and sensual, embodying the essence of intimacy, eroticism, sexuality and romanticism. Without setting any guidelines or restrictions, we asked five different photographers to interpret the French kiss in their own unique way and THE FRENCH KISS SERIES is the result. The books demonstrate that people’s perception of the French kiss does not always correspond with reality. For instance, it doesn’t have to take place between two teenagers below the Eiffel Tower with birds singing and music swelling in the background. The French kiss can also be funky, filthy, dramatic or exquisitely ordinary. By granting our commissioned photographers their artistic freedom, THE FRENCH KISS SERIES incorporates various styles and techniques very much like the French kiss itself – sometimes it is wild and sensual and at other times- sweet and innocent. While some images will attract readers with amorous, dusky, black and white depictions of the entwined, others burst through devoted embraces in a torrent of colour.

Who Is Anna Andersson? Portraits of Sweden’s most popular name

Thousands of Swedish women share the country’s most popular name – Anna Andersson. Besides their name and nationality, do they have anything else in common? In 2014, photographer Meredith Andrews travelled the length of Sweden to find out. From a tattoo artist to a priest, a child to a 99-year old, Meredith found astonishing diversity within this statistically significant group of women who all answer to the same name. Who is Anna Andersson? is a visual account of 50 women who, at least superficially, share the same identity. This collection of intimate portraits reveals what unites and distinguishes people with a common name. The photographs combine personal stories with a captivating glimpse of life in contemporary Sweden and offer a new perspective on a national character. Whether you’re interested in foreign cultures, naming conventions or simply love peering into the lives of complete strangers, this book will fascinate you, no matter how many times you flip through the pages.

SHARE A book you’ll like so much you will want to get rid of it

SHARE is a carefully selected blend of pictures and illustrations by different artists who are scattered all over the world. But the SHARE concept is much more than that – it also includes the notion of participation and involvement. To start with, New Heroes & Pioneers editors have chosen the SHARE artists in conjunction with a social media vote designed to find those special people whose work falls into specific categories (such as modern, not famous, smart or witty, thought provoking, reflective or diverse). Each featured artist presents a single piece of work along with a short description or text. Even though the artists have already been chosen, you can still take part! SHARE contains 50 works of art, each in a two-page format. The size is optimized and every page is perforated so that you can use the pages as individual works of art. Tear out your favourites and you will instantly have a beautiful image to hang on the wall. We believe in the importance of sharing and hope you will consider giving some of the pictures in SHARE to your friends and family.

Collecting Words by Brian Fouhy

Brian Fouhy is a visual poet of the modern variety. Working in the medium of Instagram, this American captures words and phrases that are tattooed across the pavement and handwritten on the walls. He then puts them together to create short stories. The result is a visual compilation whose sum is quite different from the individual pieces. Over 30 stories are contained in this edition. In it, you’ll find humour and irony, often found mingling together. What unifies these contrasting images is their humanity, coupled often with a sense of loneliness. Brian’s work demonstrates the similarities between the capturing of a moment through the lens of a camera and through the spilling of ink upon the pavement. Both are feelings stamped in a single moment in time. The images themselves often feature forgotten corners in the urban landscape void of life. Truly a contemporary artist, Brian uses the breadth of modern technology to create a style completely his own. And you, have you ever told a story with pictures? Is there a photo- poet that stirs inside of you?

Saturday's kids By Marcus Reed

Sculpting his work down to a few well selected colours and forms, UK artist Marcus Reed provides us a glimpse into one illustrator’s approach to modern minimalism. His (often iconic) subjects are presented in a spacious and poppy universe, one that is easy on the eyes. This hardcover edition collection of past and new works invites us to journey through the land of Marcus Reed’s imagination and the world around him. Curated by the artist himself, this upcoming edition is custom made for lovers of what’s hip and stylish. Printed on thick matte stock, we’ll see some of his well known works, including the famous Adidas campaign that takes us around the world to the hippest cities and capitals. We’ll travel back in time to the heyday of football, when it was good, as he invites us to rally with him against the modern version of the sport. We’ll discover what trendy mashup occurs when hipsters get styled in minimal Disney fashion. Then spin our wheels through the ages as we join him on the evolution of cycling. This Marcus Reed retrospective is a perfect example of what NH&P loves to radiate- highlighting an artist whose passion and refined craft makes our collective heart beat a bit faster from a perfect mix of colour and shape.

SHARE Scandinavia A book you’ll like so much you will want to get rid of it. Again. Co-edited with www.juniqe.se This second edition in the SHARE collection possesses all the same attributes of the original- an extraordinary selection of 50 artist’s works printed in 2 page format and meant for ripping out, for framing and for sharing. At New Heroes & Pioneers, we are very excited to present SHARE Scandinavia as the followup to the original. SHARE has been met with enthusiasm around the globe for lovers of art and design so SHARE Scandinavia is the next natural step in order to build on the concept. All too often we have connotations of art books being strictly for consumption at the coffee table. The SHARE concept enthusiastically abolishes this with a book that is meant to be held and deconstructed. Each featured artist presents a single piece of work along with a short description or text. The size is optimised and every page is perforated so that you can use the pages as individual works of art. SHARE Scandinavia will feature artists who work in a variety of mediums. Expect to be indulged in thoughtful works featuring minimalism, geometric shapes, austere sensuality and magic in the details. Travel from Sweden at Midsomer filled with evanescent blonde beauties, wild blooms weaved through their shimmering locks to the glacial fjords leading into the Norwegian Sea, over the castle of Hamlet and into thick forests lush with woodland foliage. Allow us to SHARE Scandinavia with you.

Menswear Essentials The company essentially doing it right Written by Matthew Porter

Photos Matthew Porter

Menswear essentials quintessentially make up the majority of my wardrobe. They provide a clean and simple ‘uniform’ in which I can present myself in a whole host of settings.

The team at New Heroes and Pioneers are constantly on the lookout for the people that are striving to create something new or take an alternative approach to their craft. With this in mind, I took the opportunity to find out more about one of London’s emerging menswear design companies, Form&Thread, and speak with their co-founder, Rich Jeal, about his take on men’s essentials, quality design and F&T’s approach to branding. Founded in 2015, F&T have a clear trajectory with their clothing, to bring well designed, uncomplicated, quality menswear essentials but at a more realistic and attainable price. But this is not a novice venture. Prior to F&T’s conception, Rich held senior buying roles at both Swedish fashion store COS and British menswear brand, Albam. With this fundamental knowledge of buying and design, F&T understands the direction and needs of the welldressed and ‘modern gent’. Starting out with well packaged and finely crafted socks, the company has expanded their essentials range to well-cut tees and simple sweats – all made with the finest materials in Portugal. “Our approach to product is simple”, says Rich. “We use the finest fabrics and materials but do not over design. Our products are season-less so that they can run right through the year.” In order to retain a quality to their prod-

uct and negate mark ups, F&T have opted to sell their clothing predominantly by their online store. This is sensible. Rich has created a stream of beautifully curated media outlets, from a well-designed and user friendly website, to a consistent and streamlined Instagram account. Rich takes me through the company’s website and social media and explains how he has chosen to brand and market the company though these platforms. “We want to create a mood and feeling towards our clothes. Without customers being able to readily see the product in person, the quality of the materials and design has to be reflected in the images and media we relay online.” And there is no question that this has been achieved. F&T has successfully combined a lifestyle element to their branding which emulates the modern minimalism and clean lines of their clothing. Scattered in and amongst their Instagram account, Rich has included striking images of minimalist architecture and scandi-esque interiors all reflecting their fresh and uncluttered clothing designs. This implies a great level of consideration goes into the structure and the detail of F&T’s garments, an extremely important element, Rich explains to me, in their process of creating new items. NH&P like to recognise others that have a true sense of self and an assurance around their brand and product, be that a narrative, piece of design or a collection of art and words for a book.

F&T caught NH&P’s attention as they are that ‘new hero’. I ask Rich what he considers the challenges in maintaining the company’s ethos and who they look to as their own ‘heroes’. “We want to have the respect of our customers and ensure that those who happen upon us, albeit through formal introduction or simply stumbling upon our online accounts, understand our brand and what we aim to achieve. We love that people can start building up their wardrobe with items made from the best quality materials…and that’s just it, we create products that you’d find hanging in high-end stores, but reasonable priced”. Rich explains how important it is to remain persistent in creating F&T’s own brand, but acknowledges their ‘hero brands’ that share a similar vision in their designs. We discuss the successes of designer Margaret Howell and how their pieces are well made and do not pander to seasonal trends. Instead, as with F&T, it’s about allowing the customer to be wear pieces throughout the year and focus on great fabrics and classic shapes. What next for F&T? Fresh off the back of a pop-up store in London’s Covent Garden, Rich expresses the company’s desire to continue to give a tactile experience to those who haven’t tried F&T, “plus its really great to meet existing fans of the brand and introduce ourselves to those new to us”.

So more pop-up stores are lined up and, importantly, an expansion of their menswear essentials collection. This staggered approach to their line has worked in the companies favour. Instead of overindulging on a ‘bit of everything’, their focus has been to create each product with care and consideration. Rich tells me the next six months will see the legwear and outerwear introduced to the online store – all very exciting.  Essentials done well and pioneering in their own right, check out Form&Thread for not only well-made and excellent clothing, but also their assertiveness towards creating a brand that’s clean, considered and accessible.
