we

are proud to bring to you TNM - The Nepali Man, which is officially now the first ever Men’s magazine in Nepal. Targeting a completely new genre in the local magazine sector with the focus on one of the boldest species on earth, TNM Magazine is our endeavour to provide a complete and innovative insight to a complete man’s world. Our chief aim is to develop a benchmark product that will not only ultimately guide you to become the complete Nepali Man, but keep you updated with the latest trends of the man’s world as well. In short, TNM will strive to be a bible for everything about men. Of course, with a variety of inspirational and dynamic men leading the country forward, it wasn’t easy zeroing in on one ultimate man for our first ever cover story. Finding the right man was nearly becoming a never ending process, until the name Rajesh Hamal came up on our table. Everything seemed to just blur out in the presence of this mega superstar of Nepal. Not only did he tick all the right boxes, but he carried the perfect persona that perfectly engulfed the whole spirit of our idea of a complete men’s magazine. However, now that we were all set, the challenge lied in getting him to spare some time for us from his extremely busy schedule. Funny enough, while chasing him for our interviews, one of those urban legends about him – ‘You cannot get hold of Rajesh Hamal, only Rajesh Hamal will get hold of you’ - was nearly turning out to be true for us. But luckily we managed to get hold of his attention and were finally able to get our story together after a couple of meetings with this down to earth superstar. Now, reflecting upon the output we have experienced and achieved, we really don’t think that there could have been a better personality who could have graced the cover of our first ever issue as ‘The Nepali Man’. So let’s keep it short in here. Why don’t you rather flip through and enjoy the variety of editorial contents that ranges from Rajesh Hamal to lifestyle, career, finance, fitness, food, music, travel, fashion and style and much more! We sincerely hope to strike the right chords with our readers on this first ever take of TNM and hope you truly enjoy the contents that has been enthusiastically compiled by our obsessive team. And just in case you disagree with anything, feel free to express back. We welcome creative criticism and believe in going all-out for excellence. Signing Off.

The battle of the tablets By: Niren R. Tuladhar

We put the world’s best tablets for a head-on battle for the crown.

AMAZON KINDLE FIRE HD

MICROSOFT SURFACE PRO

NEXUS 10

APPLE IPAD 4

If you get most of your content through Amazon (which isn’t possible here), Kindle Fire HD is the best way to get it. But, for a person who wants a good browsing experience, or a better email client or a collection of more powerful suite of apps, you should look elsewhere. $200-250

This is Microsoft’s first, bold step into the tablet market offering a stellar build quality, a gorgeous screen and a best-in-class tablet experience. With a very unique and intuitive interface, Surface Pro has the internal power and physical flexibility to carve a whole new category of computer. $899+

The first thing you’ll notice is just how bright and incredibly sharp the screen is. Then you’ll pick it up and it just feels super thin. At 8.9 mm, it’s a full half millimeter thinner than the current generation iPad. It can be safely said it’s the best Android tablet edging ahead of the Nexus 7 as well. $600

The iPad doesn’t have all of the features and whistles its competitors do - though it has most of them. Here’s what it does have: A beautiful screen, unquestionable build quality and a superb battery life (easily lasting throughout the day). And it still has the best app ecosystem of all. $499+

NEXUS 7

iPAD MINI

ASUS TRANSFORMER PAD INFINITY

MICROSOFT SURFACE RT

Regardless of whether you just want to consume media, or HD games, or actually really get stuff done, this is hands-down the best and most versatile tablet. The thin bezels on the long sides makes this one of the narrowest of the small tablets fitting comfortably in most jackets. $200

From a manufacturing and design standpoint, the iPad mini is exquisite. It’s the lightest and thinnest of the small tablets and feels like a generation ahead of others. If you already have an iPhone or you really like one, the iPad mini will probably make you happy, eventually. $330-660

This is certainly one of the most capable and powerful Android tablets in the market. The screen and the build quality are certainly phenomenal, but for the price, it’s hard to recommend anything over the iPad. If the price including the dock was $499, it would have made a rather compelling case. $500-750

Surface is a beautiful piece of hardware but the sense you get from the Surface RT isn’t a lack of quality. It’s a highly impressive piece of tech and well laid out. Though it’s thoroughly researched, it feels rushed leaving out ro$499

The F inalis ts

Why is it our winner? Because the Surface Pro is a portable power house - this thing flies. Coupled with beautifully engineered hardware, this tablet will be hard to beat.

THE WINNER MICROSOFT SURFACE PRO The Surface Pro runs real Windows 8—the same thing you’d run on a desktop. You can install Photoshop, games, WinZip, whatever the heck you want. If it’s made for Windows and it’s somewhat recent, it’ll probably run on the Surface Pro. Since it is powered by an Intel i5 processor, it has enough juice to drive a big, luxurious external monitor. Add in a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and you’ve got yourself a new desktop. Or stop mirroring, lay the Pro down flat, and use the entire thing as one big wonderful trackpad, with ample room for your fingers or a pen for Wacomstyle artistry. The addition of a USB 3.0 port makes the prospect of desktop replacement even more real.

Windows 8 Pro 907g 10.6” 1920 x 1080 Dual Core, Intel Core i5 4GB RAM 64, 128 GB Expandable Storage Surface Pen

GOOGLE NEXUS 7 Google’s Nexus 7 isn’t just an excellent tablet for $200. It’s an excellent tablet, period. In fact, it’s the first Android tablet that is definitely recommended to buyers — and not just because it’s got a low price tag (though that certainly helps). It’s a welldesigned, powerful, and useful product, with lots of bells and whistles that makes it feel like a device that should be more expensive than it is. There are still issues that need to be addressed — particularly around growing the tablet app footprint and expanding content offerings . But those aren’t real deal breakers. The Nexus 7 delivers way more functionality in a package that’s sleek, smart, and affordably priced.

Android 4.1(Jellybean) 335g 7” 1280 x 800 Quad Core, Tegra 3 1 GB RAM 8,16 GB No Expandable Storage

APPLE IPAD 4 The new iPad is in a class by itself, just as its predecessor was. With the addition of the Retina display, LTE, more memory, and a more powerful processor, Apple has absolutely held onto the iPad’s market position as the dominant player and product to beat. For owners of the iPad 2, this isn’t necessarily a slam dunk. While the updated features are a boon to the new iPad, it doesn’t offer an experience that is significantly different from the previous version. However, if you’re in the market for your first tablet, or upgrading from the original iPad or an Android device, do not hesitate. The new iPad is the most functional, usable, and beautiful tablet that any company has ever produced.

The lightning connector is the only noticeable physical change in the 4th generation iPad over the 3rd iteration.

GADGETS

Nintendo Wii U Years after Nintendo turned the gaming industry upside down, it readies for another assault.

T

aking over the entire gaming world, Nintendo Wii was a huge hit, beating big players like Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 easily. Wii U is Nintendo’s newest contender, ready to outshine whatever Microsoft and Sony are bringing up next. What sets it apart is the Wii U Gamepad featuring a 6.2 inch, 854 x 480 resolution display in the center with traditional controls on the sides. It’s the center of Wii U experience working tandem with what’s shown on the TV designed to supplement the games whether as a standard controller, a screen for map and so on. It can also work independently

from the TV. There will be a lot of ‘Ah ha!’ moments with the Wii U. The things it can do enabled by the Gamepad/console are both awesome and unique, bringing DS-like dual screen experience to the living room. But these moments of brilliance is overshadowed by the clumsiness of the system. The Gamepad is often confusing and illogically implemented, coupled with so-so build quality, a giant charging brick and a really bad touchscreen; it feels as if the device is a prototype rather than the final build. Yet, the Wii-styled gameplay is as much fun as the previous iteration and that’s the whole point of playing a game, isn’t it?

The touch of the display is a real letdown. You really need to mash it to register taps or swipes.

The front of the console has a sliding cover that reveals two USB ports and a full size SD card slot. There are two more USB ports on the back along with HDMI, AV out and power ports.

UPCOMING The 5-inch LED makes high-def PC games look even more visually stunning. Sheer pixel density alone meant games looked even better on Project Shield than it did on the PC running it.

P

Project Shield

Project Shield is a strange beast, to be sure, a device that feels a little out of place. It’s a portable gaming device, a category historically dominated by Nintendo and, every other competitor has more or less failed – except Sony, whose sales is currently dwindling. Nvidia, with the Shield, is hoping to achieve for gaming what the Kindle has for reading. Revolution, not A transition from hardware evolution. The Shield runs ‘Pure’ Android, component manufacturer to game as Nvidia calls it, an unskinned version of console maker in one fell swoop Android and the rising tide of Android gaming will raise all boats. A 5 inch multitouch 720p display sits atop a full-on game controller that resembles a blend of the Xbox 360 gamepad’s curves and the Playstation 3 DualShock 3’s unfortunate analog stick placement, all powered by the new Tegra 4 quad-core processer. Set to ship in Q2 2013, Nvidia promises stunning graphics for the Android games it’s made to run as well as direct streaming option employing Nvidia’s GeForce Experience application which can pipe PC gaming to the handheld over your local network. However, if you download the Grid application, you can access high end titles from any mobile hotspot over the cloud. Still no word on the pricing though, sadly. 14

BlackBerry Z10 The newest underdog in the market

Entering the battle of its life, RIM(now: Blackberry) is using everything in its arsenal to win the smartphone race with the all new Blackberry Z10 sporting the new Blackberry 10 operating system. The design is not bad, per se, but not radical, borrowing most of its exterior from the iPhone. The Z10 does deviate in notable ways, of course. Eventhough its larger (4.2 inch display, 1280 x 768, 356 PPI LCD), there’s no home button on the device. But, this phone is not about the hardware, it’s the operating system - BlackBerry describes it as the OS for the next decade. Whether you call it copying or not, BlackBerry borrows several of the best designs from its counterparts. It uses gestures that are heavily borrowed from MeeGo and WebOS. BlackBerry Z10 is a solid phone and it has a real chance here to beat Microsoft take the third spot. All they have to do is fine tune operating system. It is powered by a dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5 GHz and has a fat 2GB of RAM with 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded all the away upto 48GB with the help of microSD card. The battery life, however, is disappointing - hardly lasting a day with moderate use.

They let you download all your photos. Google’s Picasa is the easiest way to move them if you want to share or store them in the cloud – the ‘Move Your Photos’ extension for Chrome does the job for you. Download your Data To download all your existing Facebook data, go to ‘Account Settings’ and click ‘Download’. If you want to send other data like contact information to your phone – use AddressBook for Android and SmartSync for iOS. To save birthdays, go to ‘Events’, click ‘Settings’ and select ‘Export’ to push them to an Outlook, Google or Apple account.

Log out of these apps – or to be on the safe side, delete them entirely until your period of quarantine is over.

TNM AUTO

top wheels

for men in 2013

By: ayush dhaubanjar

Most of us men are very passionate about owning a fine set of M wheels. Call it overrated ladies, but we men can never get enough of those crazy supercars or high performance motorcycles. However when Nepal is brought into the equation, this obsession does have a limitation. Although fantastic new vehicles are regularly launched by major auto manufacturers elsewhere in the world, only a handful are actually feasible for our roads. Yes, it does not really rain Lamborghinis and Ferraris here at home! Nevertheless, here’s our top ten pick from the lot that could find it’s way into Nepal in 2013 and still fuel up these desires.

DUCATI HYPERMOTARD 821 Ducati has totally revised the Hypermotard for 2013, offering the bike in three versions - Hypermotard, Hypermotard SP and Hyperstrada. The brand new 821cc Testastretta engine is capable of producing 110 bhp at 9250 rpm and 90 nm of torque at 7750 rpm. The 2013 Hypermotard line-up includes the Ducati Safety Package of three-level ABS, eight-level Ducati Traction

Control, and integrated Riding Modes of Sport, Touring and Urban. OUR SAY: With its selectable riding modes and naked design, this is the kind of thrilling motorcycle perfect for everyday use. Fit the Hyperstrada with dual purpose tires and you might just be able to do a speed run to Jomsom and back.

FORD ECO SPORT The Ford EcoSport offers a confident stance, a high driving position and robust character on top of the agility, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency that comes with its compact footprint. The EcoSport boasts of diminutive one-litre,

3-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine which surprisingly has been turbocharged to produce a respectable 120 bhp of power and 170 nm of torque. Ford claims that the SUV will give 16kmpl mileage, which is quite decent for a vehicle its size.

OUR SAY: Ford’s ground breaking EcoBoost technology should definitely be something worth experiencing. And with its 200mm ground clearance, you could as well drive it around just like any of the bigger SUVs out there.

why men love cars more than women? * If ever there is a problem with the car, it alerts the driver with a warning light. But a man can never possibly be warned of a women’s meltdown. * A car never objects even if you sing like a braying donkey. * A man can always sell off his car or rent it out.

16

March/April 2013

* A finely tuned machine will never ask to take it slow. * There really is no shame in wanting to trade in for the newer and faster model every year. * Waxing a car is an easily understood process. But women and waxing is a complete and utter mystery.

HONDA CRF250L The 2013 CRF250L is an awesome dual-sport machine that adds off-road capability to its on-road prowess. The CRF250L gives you a great upright seating position that’s comfortable for longer rides, perfect for seeing your way through an urban traffic snarl or getting out on the trail. The CRF250L is equipped with a fuel-injected single-cylinder engine that features an

electric starter, doubleoverhead cams and a counter balancer. OUR SAY: No bike in Nepal has really earned the legacy and reputation of Honda’s XL and XR series. If priced affordably, the CRF should definitely be able to continue with the legacy with its bespoke Honda engineering!

HYUNDAI SANTA FE Hyundai has a redesigned Santa Fe for 2013. The new Santa Fe is the latest model to receive Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ styling. The Santa Fe’s changes for 2013 also include new engines. The basic Santa Fe Sport gets Hyundai’s 190-hp, 2.4-liter directinjection four-cylinder, and a 264-hp, 2.0-liter

turbo four is offered as an option.

engines. The higher-end Cerato models get Kia’s next-generation UVO invehicle infotainment system with eServices, which allows owners to use their smart phones to control many features of the car.

OUR SAY: The new Cerato with its sleeker profile plus dynamic styling distinctively will easily stand out in the crowd. Probably will get you noticed in true Gangnam Style too.

OUR SAY: The revised dimensions lend more sleekness to the Santa Fe’s profile and there’s really nothing else that can match the manly feel of driving a large SUV. But competitive pricing will be the key to boosting its sales.

KTM 390 DUKE The KTM 390 Duke looks nearly the same as the 200 Duke in terms of appearance. But it’s powered by a 375cc engine capable of producing almost 50bhp of power and a beefier steel trellis frame holds the 390 together. Good news is that KTM has bigger plans for Asian countries. So also likely to come are a road-going faired KTM sportsbike, a relatively comfortable KTM touring 390 variant, and possibly even

an on-off road Enduro 390 special. OUR SAY: With the combination of the 390cc engine on nearly the same chassis and the crazy power-to-weight ratio, this Duke should be madly phenomenal. We though hope that the affordable and reasonable price tag is maintained. KIA CERATO Kia claims the 2013 Cerato is not only longer, lower, and wider than the previous model, but it’s also makes use of 37 per cent more high-strength steel. The Cerato is being offered with 1.8L and 2.0L four-cylinder

MAHINDRA XUV500 Developed in-house by Mahindra, the XUV500 is Mahindra’s first global SUV platform. The XUV500 is unmatched in terms of style, performance, technology, safety and comfort, providing customers a truly complete driving experience. The XUV500 is powered by a state-of-theart 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine which delivers a power-packed 140 bhp with 330 nm torque. It is

available in 3 variants & seven attractive shades. OUR SAY: Yes it’s been nearly a year since we have been waiting for the product to arrive. So we highly hope that now there’s no further delay. Otherwise by the time the XUV500 finds its way here, the competitors might have already sold 500 of similar spec SUV’s.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE Earning over 120 international awards in its first year, the Range Rover Evoque has been a major success for Land Rover. The smallest Range Rover model ever, the Range Rover Evoque stays true to the core brand values by providing premium levels of craftsmanship, luxury, performance and multi-terrain capability. Available in five-door and coupe versions, all Range

Rover Evoque models are powered by a 2 litre, 240 bhp direct-injected turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

and has a new front look grill, side cladding and projector headlamps. The rear side has also got a new look. The new Safari Storme features a 2.2 litre Varicor engine capable of generating 142 bhp of power and 320 nm torque.

OUR SAY: It’s time to cook up a storm. Seriously! This is something that truly fits every aspect of our roads and will easily take you most places.

OUR SAY: Maybe our expectations are way too high here. But considering our Range Rover loving rich folks, someone might have already placed the order for one of this posh beauty on wheels.

TATA SAFARI STORME The Tata Safari Storme is the next generation version of its iconic Safari. Storme has got the typical off roader style and looks very sturdy. The newest member of the Safari team looks fresher than its earlier version

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER

AND ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD…

The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander may have a familiar name, but the latest variant is a complete makeover from the previous version. It claims to be more intelligent, economical, luxurious and safer than ever before. A choice of engine options from 2.0 litre V4 to 3.0 litre V6 are available. From the cut of the fabric to the moulding of the dash, both inside and out the Outlander is

a premium machine. OUR SAY: Amid the rush of new compact crossover SUV’s arriving in Nepal this year, the Outlander will be one of the latest arrivals to the class, underpinning its elder sibling Pajero. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander easily has all that it takes to stand out in the crossover field. And will exceed expectations.

LAMBORGHINI VENENO

This is the latest bit of insanity from Lamborghini. Powered by a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine capable of producing 750 horsepower, this 50th anniversary model is based on the Lamborghini Aventador. The Veneno looks downright lethal and easily has the kid inside all of us men cackling with joy. But unfortunately, all three units of this limited production car have already been sold with a massive price tag of $3.9 Million. There will be a green, white, and red one, each representing a colour of the Italian flag. The Veneno is the fastest and most powerful road legal Lamborghini ever built.

CAN-AM RENEGADE X xc 1000 Ever wanted a quad that brings together the unbridled savage character of a racing machine and the dexterity of an ATV? The 2013 Can-Am Renegade X xc 1000 might just fit the bill starting at $12,500, if you’re skilled enough to handle its evil litre-class engine. Featuring an EFI-fed, 976cc V-Twin power plant, next-generation chassis, improved suspension and enhanced ergonomics, the Can-Am Renegade 1000 X xc is the king of the sport 4x4 ATV category in the planet. If the apocalypse is ever coming, this should be an ideal vehicle to ride out the storm!

MERCEDES G63 AMG 6x6

The Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 isn’t a concept! This production six-wheel drive monster truck comes with the AMG-built 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine capable of producing 544 bhp of power and 760 nm of torque. Combine that with its 18 inches of ground clearance, 37-inch tires and five locking differentials, and you’ve got a vehicle capable of everything you will ever imagine for the rest of your life. Mercedes plans to build about only 20-30 units of these behemoths for a price just below $4,60,000. If you have to ask about the mileage, then clearly you don’t own enough oil wells to afford one.

Go Wild & Creative! Paint yourself and stick to the wall or whatever for that matter!

• So, your first task is to spend a pile of cash on a great sofa. This is where most of your time will be spent anyway, so forget about the budget deals and invest. • Get some big fluffy pillows, cool sheets and comforters as basic visual treats for your room. • Continue with the monochromatic drama by adding theatrical ceiling to floor drapes. • Make sure you get some “atmosphere lighting” for your living room (& ideally dining room and bedroom too) to help create a soft and sexy atmosphere. Invest on portable metallic lamps which complete the modern look plus adds-up as a layer to your lighting system. • Solid colors work best in BP’s, but not necessary to stick with dark. Consider picking somber colors from the color palette to appear masculine, for example white, grey, brown, beige, blue, green and cream. Plus forget about the mix-match of textures and materials. Keep it neutral. • If you settle for heavier colors, make sure the furniture remains light in silhouette, with a slim-line dining table and a set of metal wire chairs that allow light to shine through the back rest, in a shutter effect. • Do not hesitate to play with some vibrant art effects on one of the main walls of either your living area or your bedroom. Save some cash by creating something of your own here. Go Wild & Creative! Paint yourself and stick to the wall or whatever for that matter!. It would definitely be something that every eye would catch and talk about. If you know what I mean! • Simple drapes are best for a masculine appearance. Using only window blinds to cover the windows is a stark and contemporary look that works well for BP’s. • Never underestimate the power of layering; neat layering builds a homely feel, so add a rug beneath a coffee table and a few cushions to the sofa to add warmth and pops of color. Men! Just make it warm and inviting by keeping it Simple YET Stylish! March/April 2013

Fitness is more than just bulking up or looking good, it’s about feeling good and being fit. It plays a major role in a person’s life by making the person feel good about themselves and confident. Here are certain tips that you need to consider before starting a routine or working out for the first time. 1. Please consult your physician. Consult with your doctor whether you should be doing heavy lifts or sticking to normal cardio routines. Also if you are suffering from any joint or muscle

This might be hard to believe but gaining lean muscle is even harder than loosing fat. Normally, you can get all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that you need from your food. But if you’re trying to put on significant size and you’re exercising at a level that is constantly stripping your body of fuel, you’ll need help from supplements. In addition, you should also eat frequently. Strength training means it burns a high amount of carbohydrates. Because of this, you shouldn’t go into any muscle building workout without having eaten about 300-600 calories of a carbohydrate-containing meal two to three hours prior.

Overall champion of Mr. Himalaya twice and 3 times winner of South Asian bodybuilding competition, he has been coaching for the past 14 years and has carved a new dimension to working out smartly. Tip of the month: Workout Hard Eat smart. If you want to see a great change in your body, please keep in mind what you eat. You need to give 100% while workout but your food really gives you the result you desire.

problems or are under medications be sure to talk to your doctor first. 2. Choose the right gear. This includes your work out shoes and clothes. Be sure to wear helmet and protective gears if you are riding a bicycle or other such activities. 3. Do not avoid the warning or stop signs. If you are feeling dizzy or have cramps or have sudden pain in your body, please consult a doctor. 4. Gym Trainers. Tell your trainer about your capacity. If you do not understand a posture of an exercise always ask. Improper posture might cause joint and muscle injury. 5. Know your limits and your needs.

While the other two deal with only physical changes, general fitness is related with your mental and physical health. It can be from the sports you participate in to which foods you eat. This means maintaining the right body weight for your height and having the ability to participate in physical activities without burning out too quickly. When you have general fitness you can participate in many different activities that include toning exercises or cardiovascular exercises. A regular moderate workout regimen and healthy diet can improve general markers of good health, while preventing age or lifestyle-related reductions in health and the series of heart and organ failures that accompany inactivity and poor diet.

You need to understand your body’s capabilities and need to provide it with the energy and food it needs. Do not starve or over stuff yourself. Take plenty of rest.   When you start working out, please be sure to set a goal instead of blindly hitting the gym. The fitness goals can be broadly categorized into fat loss, muscle gain or general fitness. Depending on what your goal is, the workout routines will differ.

Weight loss can be achieved even without fat loss. However, if you are aiming to stay fit over a long period of time fat loss is more apt than weight loss. When you take in more calories than you burn, your body stores the excess energy for later use as fat. You can lose this fat by either eating fewer calories or burning more through physical activity. When you drastically decrease your caloric intake, your metabolism slows down and your body clings to its fat stores for survival. Therefore, the best way to burn fat is to use a combination of diet and exercise to create a negative calorie balance.

WHY DO MEN

RAPE?

L

Words: Ankit Shakya

Let’s accept it! Some of us men still cannot seem to cordially woo a woman into a relationship where both parties mutually consent to a physical bond. We still end up resorting to forceful means of establishing sexual relations with the opposite sex. More shockingly, people have the audacity to put forth justifications to acts of rape. A woman in a revealing dress is definitely no provocation to forcefully invade her body. Millions of years of evolution has given the human being apt sense and thought control to not give in to primal animal lust. Has it not?

rape is as unthinkable to them as cannibalism.” So why do men rape? Lack of education, awareness and a low standard of living may play a contributing factor in answering this question. But global statistics tell us that this certainly is not a determinable factor. For instance, Sweden has one of the highest standards of living and a well educated population. But ironically, Sweden also registered the second highest rate of rape cases in the world in 2010. So are the sick perversions of man that really drives him to rape? Psychologists agree that rape is caused by some psychological illness within the offender and it is strongly contended that those who rape are either emotionally disturbed or have personality defects. Some other psychologists believe that rape is caused by a sexual addiction. While the average psychologist state that a rapist is a man who had childhood experiences that were relatively difficult to deal with and now they cannot relate to women in a successful manner which ultimately is a defect called sexual inadequacy.

at the gates of the Prime Minister’s residence on a regular basis. The protests, a voice raised by the general public, pleaded strict action against perpetrators of violence against women. But sadly, with no political support or violent measures undertaken by the activists, the movement has now lost steam and put very little pressure on the incumbent government to genuinely take action. It’s pathetic to conclude that our system of governance will never actually swing to action on a peaceful protest that does not resort to hooliganism and vandalism. The bitter truth is that it always requires a nationwide strike to settle on a consensus with the government.

However, some sociologists concur on the fact that rapists are relatively normal people and do not have a psychological illness and they have a couple of different explanations. One theory to which countries like Nepal and India can relate to more easily is the expression of gender inequality. Needless to point out, we live in a society which is pretty much male dominated. The idea of gender equality is still taking some time to set in, and this leads to sexual permissiveness. In such situations, the likeliness of men taking rejections personally is high. This in turn may lead to frustration driven rape cases. A more feminist point of view blames the need for the male gender to show their dominance, as a reason for rape resulting from sexual inequality. And there is plenty of evidence to support this theory as almost all rape cases has a male as the offender.

Although the government amended the law against rape to include marital rape, many cases still go unreported.

Regardless of the causes, invading another person’s body is a brutal act which should have phased out as man started living in civilized societies. However, a recent flurry of horrendous offences clearly shows that the human race has a long way to go. It started out with the infamous Delhi rape case which sent out waves of shock, disgust and even protests right across borders to Nepal. Before the atrocious issue even had a chance to simmer down, another innocent woman was robbed at the hands of Immigration Officials in Tribhuvan Airport and later raped by a Nepal Police constable in our very own Nepal. Due to its extremity and involvement of government officials, this rape case did receive the amount of attention that it deserved. Series of campaigns led to the foundation of the popular Occupy Baluwatar movement, which lasted for a couple of months with activists peacefully demonstrating

Thousands of rape cases, however, just go by unnoticed and unattended. Police reports say that one rape case is reported in the country per day but scarier statistics suggest that a rape or violence against women takes place every hour somewhere in Nepal. Unfortunately, most rape cases never come to light because the women and their families do not allow them to. In the fair chance that a victim does press charges, the prosecution is a whole new ordeal in itself. Firstly, the victim will require a doctor’s report before registering the charges. But the irony here is that the doctors are reluctant to include rape in their reports, as it will/may require them to come testify in the court of law. Then to finally convict the rapist, the victim must prove, in an open court, that the rapist sexually penetrated her. Apart from being very difficult to prove, the whole ordeal is an embarrassing nightmare for the victim who has already gone through too much suffering. Difficulties in proving and convicting rapists aside, the alarming fact is that there are so many cases of marital rape that are not given the magnitude of seriousness they deserve. Many wives in Nepal suffer from spousal rape on a routine basis, which may be a

consequence of the male-dominated culture prevalent here. Although the government amended the law against rape to include marital rape, many cases still go unreported. Marital violence is wrongly accepted in our Hindu society with the belief that our religious texts acknowledge wives into submitting to their husbands’ whims. But the fact is that Hinduism also stresses on conjugal harmony based on mutual understanding between the husband and wife. So the only reason such marital violence happens to be accepted is because the religion is misinterpreted by our society. A 1997 survey by SAATHI established that 95 per cent of 1,250 married women interviewed experienced some form of domestic violence, and that rape, after beatings, was the second most common form of physical violence. The sad thing is that it is highly unlikely that these numbers have changed significantly for the better. Because issues like rape are not openly discussed in our society, it is very hard to get appropriate statistics. And due to this very reason several women shy away from ever admitting that they have been raped, fearing relational and social disapproval. Furthermore, the perception of the general public to the victim is usually not of sympathy or understanding. This is specially a concern when virginity of a bride is considered as one of the prime concerns when getting married (which is again a totally different issue on its own). What this consequently ensues is a further narrowed insight on the subject of rape, leaving it a taboo subject in our society. Completely eradicating any form of crime is expecting a little too much. However, it is an even graver case when the issue is swept under the rug. Having proper laws is a start, but is certainly not enough. Spreading proper awareness is a must so that people’s perception towards the crime, victim as well as the perpetrators changes drastically. March/April 2013

I

I would like to begin by saying a few words about stupidity in Nepal. Now before I start, let me make it positively clear that all Nepalese people are not in effect stupider than other people. We have a growing middle class, private colleges, multinational companies and imported cars. We have also won ‘CNN Heroes’ back to back; the only country to do so. And recently we also had a first ever Nepali national registered in the 2013 Forbes Billionaire’s List. You don’t get all that by being stupid. Even so, you do sometimes wonder. Consider this. It would be hard to imagine a more evil piece of work than the case of Sita Rai. After years of vicious, random abuse at the hands of her foreign employers, Sita Rai returned home with her savings only to be robbed at the airport by Nepali immigration officials and repeatedly raped for two days by a Nepali police constable. As the policeman sent her off in a ‘night’ bus the next day, he gave her a thousand rupee note and asked her to look him up the next time she was in town. Then he threatened to kill her if she told anyone of the incident. A month later, Sita Rai learnt she was pregnant with his child. The constable was arrested soon after and confessed his guilt freely. But authorities haven’t been able to trace the two Nepali immigration officials. As of the time of this article going to print, the immigration officials are still ‘absconding’. Now it seems evident from this, if nothing

else, that not having a fast track system for rape cases and subsequently, the capital punishment for rapists, is madness. Of course, if you’re one of ‘those’ rights’ activists, you could argue that convicted rapists should be allowed to appeal endlessly on light-hearted procedures, for they are after all, human. Whatever the argument, one thing is certain and that there is an awful lot of stupidity about it. The inconvenient side of this argument is that it is relatively easy to prey on people who have lost the power of thought. Unfortunately for us, I don’t believe there is a politician (yet) in Nepal of any moral standing who would stand up to such a weight of feeling. There used to be a time when politicians changed the public’s opinion. Now they just respond to it, which is unfortunate because these things are not unquestionable. This is all a rather depressing thought; so let’s finish by mentioning my favourite police story at the moment – namely, the Inspector General of Police who responded by saying, ‘Whose case are you referring to?’ to a message on his cell phone that read - ‘Dear sir, please ensure justice for the victim who was robbed by TIA immigration officials and raped by a police constable’. I’m sure there is a moral in this somewhere, and I will let you know as soon as it occurs to me. But if you will excuse me now, I’m going to stock up on ammo for the gun I inherited from my grandfather, in case anyone decides to rob my house tonight. Something tells me I shouldn’t trust the police anymore!

TNM INSPIRATION

300 300, the movie is an adaptation of Frank Miller’s fictional graphic novel based on the Battle of Thermopylae which took place in 400 B.C. The novel depicts a vivid story of honour portrayed by the sturdy 300 Spartan warriors led by King Leonidas who made a heroic stand at the narrow Hot Gates passage against the insurmountable Persian army commanded by Xerxes, a selfproclaimed larger-than-life pierced and golden monstrous deity. Even though, the Spartans were hapless as compared to the Persians, King Leonidas’ heroic strategic placements and strong appetite for valour warded off the Persians in one of history’s most epic military battle. The movie begins as a narration describing the young Leonidas, through Agogi, a Spartan custom where young boys are placed into violent and wild scenarios; they have to defend themselves, avoid starvation, survive and return back to Sparta. Such feats of bravery and the warrior tradition of Sparta from childhood made a Spartan, an insurmountable soldier. This month we look at the leadership attributes depicted in the movie in relation to the real-world scenario. Leadership attributes of King Leonidas can be studied through the lens of the 300 army. 34

March/April 2013

LEADERSHIP Leadership inspirations referenced from the movie ‘300’ By: saurav nepal

Leonidas’ leadership attributes portrayed in the movie helps develop successful managers and individual skills in the real-world scenario. He had the vision and confidence in his abilities to fight, survive and influence his soldiers. The battle of Thermopylae sparked a revolt against the Persian where the Spartans came out victorious in the end.

The Spartans were dynamic individually, but when they set up in their phalanx, they became one impenetrable unit.

SPARTANS: “We fight as a single impenetrable unit. That is the source of our strength. Each Spartan protects the man to his left, thigh to neck with a shield. A single weak point and the phalanx shatters.” – King Leonidas. The Spartans were dynamic individually, but when they set up in their phalanx, they became one impenetrable unit. The 300 muscular Spartans stood against the million Persians. The Persians weren’t able to overtake the Hot Gates

pass as they were held back by the hearty Spartans. In defending Thermopylae pass, the coordinated teamwork of the Spartans became crucial in preserving their position and flanks. Likewise, in a successful business, a good leader should understand that the sum of the team is greater than an individual contribution. A good leader should train his employees and foster a culture that emphasizes on teamwork. The team members should coordinate as an efficacious unit to achieve the goals. THIS IS SPARTA: “This is where we hold them. This is where we fight. This is where they die. Today no Spartan dies” – King Leonidas. In the movie, King Leonidas choses the Hot Gates passage as a stand to maximize the strategic advantage against the monstrous Persian army. The Persians could not pass through the passage as the robust Spartans were holding the narrow pass of Thermopylae chivalrously. In the real world, it is very crucial to find a perfect location where our skills will thrive. One should choose the place that most suits their skills and competencies. Judgmental errors will lead to failure. Similarly, while setting up a business, wrong location decisions

will hamper the company’s growth. Unless you are a FORTUNE 500 heir, you need to choose the battlefield that best suits your strength! FORESEER: The tale of Victory: “You (Dilios) have a talent unlike any other Spartan. You will deliver my final orders to the council…tell them my story. Make every Greek know what happened here. Tell of victory.” – King Leonidas Rather than keeping one additional soldier, King Leonidas sends Dilios to convey his final orders to the council. Dilios was an inspirational orator. He recognized Dilios unique talent and skills so, he sent him back to Sparta to convince the council regarding the need of the entire Spartan Army to ward off the Persians. Queen Gorgo, Leonidas’ wife also worked to convince the council. In business and real life, when problem arises, you need to look for experienced and altruistic people

to support and help you out from the situation. Leaders should also be familiar with everyone’s potential because a handful of veterans can out-perform thousands of amateurs. TO ARMS: King Leonidas disapproves the request of Ephialtes (the hunchback) of joining the army because his inability to raise his left arm above his shoulder would put the entire 300 army and their strategy in danger. King Leonidas uses only sturdy troops to destroy the invading dreadful troops, starting with a wall of Persian warrior corpses to shock the invaders. In this epic struggle, there was no room for weak and fragile warriors. In the real world, leaders should also look into the applicant’s skill set rather than only the professional criterion. Sometimes, a wrong hiring decision can jeopardize the entire organizational structure. Superior manpower and

resources can out-perform challenges and hardships of entrepreneurship because a few good warriors are better than an army of acquaintances. BATTLE PLAN: The Spartans were heroic warriors so; they had to repeatedly change their tactics while facing the attackers during the Battle of Thermopylae. They set up their battle plans to suit the desired results. They worked hard and never underestimated the Persians. Had they retreated or surrendered, they would have never won the Battle of Thermopylae. In real life, a good leader should work hard in building plans that will take away advantages from the rivals. One should never be satisfied with past achievements. If you retreat or surrender yourselves in the job then, you’ll never know if a hard work for a month or two might have paid off.

MEN SHOULD KNOW how to listen

An age old question, with answers so elusive, that even after centuries, I am sure we are still as baffled as the first time this was asked. So to the men, instead of asking, what it is that women want, perhaps a better topic to raise is: what is it that men should know about women’s wants. I went through the pain of asking my friends, sisters, aunties and random strangers I met in parties about what characters in a man makes a woman feel absolutely treasured. Unsurprisingly, this particular answer, if not number Dr. Jasmine Tenpa is one, was definitely in top three of every woman. You might think I’m starting a medical doctor by to blabber and rant, but trust me read this through. Yes, especially you. profession and writes as a freelancer. The article portrays her personal thoughts and observations. 36

March/April 2013

If you are stumped on what to say, say nothing and just listen. Listen, nod, hold her hand, play with her hair, bring her tea and, ask her if she feels better.

You guessed it, what men should know about a woman, and it applies to Nepali men as well… is we love a man who can listen. And since, men like it when we get right to the topic, that’s exactly what I am going to do here (but you should also know, we don’t like to feel rushed either!! hhmmppff!!) So here: there is a fine line between how men perceive listening and how women see listening as. For men, I guess, listening means listening with a motive; to listen to the words she is saying, make sense of it, decipher it, try to understand it, figure out her worries and then the BEST part… come up with a solution and save the day !! In fact, when I think about it seriously, I find it very endearing that they actually put up so much effort into understanding and frankly there have been moments when I see this light go on inside the guy’s head, and his face goes all bright, as he comes up with his big solution and awaits for the girl to look up at him, smile and say “my hero!!”. Instead he finds himself at the end of this steely, cold look with an “uff, you never understand” or a “you just don’t listen to me!!”

So what went wrong? What went wrong was not that your advice was useless; I think Your advice might just be too obvious. If a girl is crying about her broken heel or venting about her colleague, of course she knows she can fix the heel or buy a new shoe in the former or she needs to just confront her colleague or to ignore the situation (as what is called for), in the latter. She knows that. She is crying or venting her heart out not for the solution but she is doing that so she can get over it by just letting her feelings pour out. When a guy tries to “FIX” a situation, he makes a girl think there is a problem, when most of the times a woman just sees it as a part of her daily life. Making her see it as a problem, only increases her worries and suddenly she gets angry because she came to you with just worries and now because of your genius insights and fixes, she realizes she actually has a problem. So now you understand, why you’re the brunt of her blames, right?

THEIR OPINIONS

Navaneeta Amatya

Men should know how to treat women right. Men and women are equal regardless of the gender, but there are several men in our society who do not know how to treat a woman in the right way. Women are still treated unfairly; men should perceive women as neither inferior nor superior as humans. Well as it is said, Real men treat women right.

When we women listen to each other, we don’t sit down thinking today I am going to find a solution to this. We sit down thinking, “ I soo need to talk about this!!” and that’s how we communicate. If you ever notice a group of girls talking, you will notice they hardly sit down with an agenda to fix a problem, they just sit down and vent, sometimes, we don’t even respond to our questions… we just go “ I know!” This means we totally understand, and we laugh about it and feel happy that we are not alone, that we are not the only one going through this. And I guess that’s what we look for in our guys as well. We all know a broken nail will grow back, office politics will subside, misunderstandings amongst friends and family will always smoothen out and eventually, life will always go on. So when we ask you to listen, please do not state the obvious, do not interrupt and never ever say, “its not a big deal, why are you making it one??” If you are stumped on what to say, say nothing and just listen. Listen, nod, hold her hand, play with her hair, bring her tea, ask her if she feels better and tell her you are there for her till she needs to finish, and when she is done, there will come a moment when she will ask you for your opinion. The golden answer here is “ I think you are doing fine baby. What do you want to do?” Aaaah… she might go on for sometime after that as well, but do this and that anticipation you had for your heroic moment, I can assure you, will become a reality.

Supriya Pradhan Shrestha

Women are more than what they seem in the eyes of men. Men should learn to consider a woman’s personality rather than just judge them by their appearance. Men should take the time to interact and know the woman for who she is.

Dilasha Shah

Men should not underrate a women’s capabilities rather they should respect them as they would respect men and treat them equally in all facets. Reserved seats in public transport or opening doors for women first is not something we can call as equal. We can do it ourselves. We want to have equality, not some kind of special treatment.

TNM COVER STORY

RAJESH HAMAL like never before. photography: kishor kayastha hair and make-up: miki tanaka

March/April 2013

It’s been three hours since we started off with our photo shoot for this cover story feature. Continuously staring into the camera and acting out various expressions under the sharp lights of the studio isn’t the easiest of tasks. But Mr. Rajesh Hamal is still full of energy and effortlessly striking out pose after pose for the camera. It may be just another run of the mill day for Mr. Hamal but us, on the other hand, are still star struck and cannot believe that we are directing such a mega superstar to act out to our visualizations for the photo shoots. He enthusiastically participates in the shooting progress and his humble stance easily seems to overshadow his mighty stature. But looks can be deceiving! As we randomly question him to act out his best movie scene for a video interview, he suddenly transforms himself from his composed frame of mind into a rage and roars out his famous ‘Haeeyyy!!!’ warning. This is immediately followed by his mighty palms stretched out towards us in his signature acting style. Forget trying to give him a hifive and risk losing an arm, but that split second was more than enough to put us in a state of initial shock. Thankfully it was just an act out, and with utter ease he had just proved his acting expertise to us.

He sure is a prominent figure in bringing professionalism in the Nepali movie industry, with almost 300 movies under his career belt. But, we have always believed that there definitely is more to him than just acting. Today, he is probably the most recognized face in the Nepali media. Apart from being very well read and a highly educated individual, he has perfectly crafted his professional career steering clear of any unwanted controversies. Rajesh Hamal is a man with well planned directions in life who skilfully treads and balances within the thin lines between superstar fame, fortune, personal life and social image. Not just in reel life, but he is the ideal real life hero that we all might as well look up to. So in our pursuit to do some soul searching, we set out to learn more about the man - Rajesh Hamal. RH: “Being a child of a diplomat has its perks. I was hopping around countries from a really young age because my father kept getting transferred to different countries. So before I was 4, I was in Pakistan doing my Kindergarten, then to New Delhi where I formally started my studies. After two and a half years there I was back in Kathmandu where I studied in St. Xaviers, Jawalakhel for a few years. My dad was then transferred to Moscow, so the whole family moved there. Then I went to Punjab University in Chandigarh.”

He told us this during our third meeting. The first time we met him he was attending a charity event as the chief guest. Despite trying to be well prepared, we were slightly star struck and the only thing we could conjure was “Hello, we are from TNM.” All we received in return was a courteous smile and a hello. The second meeting took place on his set for the Quiz show he hosts on television. Backstage, our team anticipated his return from the set, and when he did get back, he was swarmed by fans to get his autograph. He then rushed back to his dressing room and changed for the next shoot and repeated the process almost 6 more times. Following him around for an exchange of formal greetings was a task in itself. However, we were lucky enough to talk with him while he was having lunch: a home packed box of lettuce and other veggies. Personally, we thought it impossible to maintain the aforementioned ‘hectic’ lifestyle on such few calories. But we were equally impressed with his will and discipline to maintain a healthy life.

RH: “I have a pretty busy schedule. This’ll probably go on till late in the evening. Maybe we can talk properly sometime next week. I don’t think I can manage enough time to talk to you guys, I’ll be on set soon.” TNM: “Sure. However can we still take a few photographs though; we can use it in the magazine.” RH: “Go right ahead…” We weren’t exactly expecting him to be this laid back which really made us feel very comfortable around him - maybe a little too comfortable as we started clicking away shamelessly while he ate. It took a while for us to come back to our senses and we excused ourselves to wait for him downstairs where he posed for us back stage. 42

March/April 2013

Now, coming to our third rendezvous: this was under more relaxed circumstances. Under the placid yellow light of the quiet café, we dived bluntly to the point and asked him about his life before fame. It wasn’t in anyway a rag to riches tale, but it was definitely intriguing enough to keep us plastered to our chairs for the next hour and a half. RH: “I like to call myself a Palpali, but that may not be completely correct. Before my first birthday, my family moved to Kathmandu. I have three sisters, a younger brother who I have always been very close to. My dad’s occupation required a lot of moving around… and long story short, our family was hopping around countries right from when I was a kid. I wouldn’t complain about it because, to be really frank, it helped me adapt to different cultures and know more about different people. And that is probably why I was always able to gel with people regardless of their nationality, or any background for that matter. The only downside that I can really think of was the trouble in feeling rooted to a place… you know… that sense of belonging. But that was back then. However, it all adds up to making me who I am. I have always been independent and don’t find myself a stranger anywhere.” TNM: How were your teenage years? RH: After high school, I was not really used to living in one place. During my summer vacations I was always off to Bangkok. I really don’t have to tell you the joys of being a teenager in Bangkok, do I? I used to party my heart out! Even when I was in Kathmandu, I used to be out in Thamel every night. During the late eighties, Thamel wasn’t really what it is now. The place was exclusively a tourist hub where you met people from all parts of the world. In fact, I think I met more people from different parts of the world in Thamel than when I was moving around countries. I loved that atmosphere because I loved mingling with different cultures. TNM: What has changed, from then and now? RH: At that particular age, I basically lived my life to the fullest. But I have always believed in doing the right things at the right time and living life in phases. I had my share of fun during my late teens and twenties, but that was then. For instance, I started avoiding alcohol when I was in my late twenties and by the thirties I was much mellower. So the person I am today is someone very different from who I was 10 years ago. Each phase of my life has been totally different from the other and that is just how I plan to live my life. TNM: It looks like you are the type of person who has everything planned out. Did you also plan to get into the acting business? RH: “It’s funny, at one point in my life I wanted to be a wrestler. That’s a different story.

My parents never wanted me to get into the movies; on the contrary, they always envisioned their children prospering into doctors or engineers. My parents were pretty broadminded in many senses, for instance, they married after falling in love in a train ride from Banaras to Lucknow. But when it came to their children, they had a contrasting conventional outlook. Luckily, my brothers and sisters turned out as expected but I decided to take a different route which did not gel well with my parents; especially my father. When I confessed my desire to be an actor, my father was strictly against it. So began one of the most terrible times of my life. As a kid I was especially close towards my father, but the sudden falling out that ensued really had its toll on me. I started off by studying engineering and that’s probably what my dad had in mind for my future, but I had other plans.

of kicked off. By the next decade, I began to get real busy. At one point I even ended up allocating time for 3 to 4 movies in a day, dubbing for one movie in the morning, shooting for another during the day and at a night shoot for another movie. I usually got home at around 6 in the morning. I’d then get some shut eye and was back to work by 10am.

And it wasn’t the fame that lured me into movies, because back then it wasn’t a happening with probably just one movie a year coming out. But the fact that this medium had such influential power over people is what attracted me. I found it to be an extremely powerful and expressive medium. At the end of it all, it wasn’t the fame or money for me. It was all about the passion.

TNM: “I see that you are passionate about what you do, but what else intrigues you apart from films and acting?” RH: Traveling, definitely. My childhood and upbringing might be the cause but I love to travel to different countries. I try to travel as much as possible. Just last month, I was in Thailand in a tea shop with nothing more than 2 t-shirts and 2 jeans in my back pack. I love doing movies and I plan on continuing for quite some time, but if the resources allowed me to, I’d travel across borders for the rest of my life.

TNM: Do you have a “big break” miracle story? How did you actually get into it all and which movies inspired you? RH: “It all started when I got into a little modeling for a magazine in India, I think it was called Fashion Net. This was while I was in the University. After that I did a fashion show in Nepal in the late 80’s when fashion shows weren’t as common as it is now. It was actually the first ramp walk to take place in the country. It was organized by the Indian Embassy Women Association at Everest Hotel and it was totally unheard of back then. But I guess that was how I actually got into the Nepali scene. Not too long after that, an uncle who was in the movie industry offered me a role in Yug Dekhi Yug Samma and things just sort

So, yeah… you could say I was a busy guy. But now it isn’t as hectic and I try to work in one movie at a time. TNM: What kind of movies inspired you? RH: The movies that inspired me though aren’t what you’d really expect. I watched a lot of the slow, realistic and artsy type East-European movies which contradict the commercial movies I ended up working in. But those were the movies I loved.

Moreover, I like to travel alone. When you travel in a group you are only open to the people in that group. When you are alone, you are open to everybody. TNM: “Hypothetically, if you meet a stranger abroad, would you introduce yourself as the actor Rajesh Hamal or just the average Joe?” RH: I never introduce myself as an actor because peoples’ perception changes after that. So, I’d rather make up professions when I meet strangers over coffee. I’ve been a farmer with 50

buffaloes and 10 cows to many strangers. TNM: “Pretty innovative indeed. It looks like you have a totally different side to you, apart from the superstar. Tell us more.” RH: “There is one part of me that is more open to the public. I go to parties and socialize with everyone and have fun. And there is this other part of me where I like to be alone and enjoy my own company. I enjoy reading or getting my piece of mind meditating and relaxing at Osho’s Tapoban. Privacy is something I truly treasure. Funny thing is, I wasn’t the socializing type with my coworkers. I was always cordial, don’t get me wrong, but I never met any of my co-stars off set. After work, it was my time away from the films. TNM: We were actually curious to ask you about your relationship with the female co-stars, but guess it’s out of the question now. RH: “Yeah. People linked me to Karishma but that was just chemistry on set. I seriously don’t have a single phone number of any of my costars.”

question. But with another meeting pending, he asked to continue the talks the next day… at his home. We did not complain. So, making the most of a bandh, the TNM crew was at the door step of his residence. With the serious questions behind us, it was time to have some fun. We waited in his living room where he had hung up photographs of his parents. It wasn’t long before he came in and saw us waiting for him on his couch. After a brief round of greetings, we were on to the questions. TNM: Your trademark hairstyle has made its rounds with the media before. And every time I’ve seen you, you’ve been impeccably dressed. Give us your take on fashion. RH: “How do I put it...? I’ve always sort of flown against the current when it comes to fashion and many other things as well for that matter. I’ve always had long hair, I never had a crew cut like yours (pointing out to one of our crew members). The only time I had it really short was when I was 11 or 12. I had been avoiding my father because he was on my case about growing my hair out. One day he got hold of me and “asked” me to go cut my hair. There was no more dodging him so I went

TNM: Has working in the Nepali movie industry affected you in any way? RH: Like I said earlier, I never really felt rooted to a single place. But by getting into the industry, I felt more connected to the people of my country. I got chances to sit and mingle with the general public. Thankfully, people of various ethnicities now see me as one of them. That’s why I try doing as much social work, every chance I get. It helps me stay connected. TNM: “Is there any particular life changing event in your life?” RH: “My father’s death came as a real shock to me. We hadn’t really seen eye to eye after I told him I wanted to be an actor. But I figured: parents want you to do well and I was hoping to reconnect later. But I never expected him to pass away so abruptly. He hadn’t even seen any of my movies. It was appalling to get a phone call one fine morning telling you your father passed away, who would expect that?” He followed it by a laugh which held no underlying humor whatsoever. Maybe it was just something to keep the conversation from drifting into emotional pools that were better left untouched. “Ironically, he passed away during his last posting which was coincidentally in Pakistan, the country he was first posted to. There were so many things left to say, so many things left undone… so many things to fix.” Our team couldn’t be more thankful for having something to sip on at that moment; it made it easier to move on to another

to the barber and got what I felt was a pretty decent hair cut. My father thought otherwise. So I just shaved it all off… he didn’t bother me after that though. But apart from that the long hair has always been with me. Regarding fashion, I believe that one should look decent regardless of the look that you are trying to pull off. I have attended formal parties in ripped jeans when I was younger, because I didn’t like following the norm. Nowadays I get into a suit though, only because I wouldn’t like to disrespect the host. So, yeah, I think the bottom line is to look decent in whatever you are wearing. You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing; I like to maintain my own identity. Where’s the fun in conforming to the herd mentality. TNM: What are your dos and don’ts on grooming? RH: “You’ve got to look decent and clean. I don’t use cologne or deodorants anymore, I used to though, when I first started shaving. One day a friend of the opposite sex told me I smell of cologne. She told me:” When you wear cologne, you lose your smell that is identifiable only to you.” That really struck me! From that day onwards, I have given everyone the privilege of smelling my natural aroma. I do keep myself clean though; if you don’t the plan can backfire. TNM: What are the things that you make sure you don’t leave behind when you leave the house? RH: “Uhm… money. The rest I can do without, but without money, I’m lost out there.” TNM: Put these in order: Social life, Money, Fame, Family, Profession. (This was the only question that seemed to stump him for a little while.) RH: “I’m terrible at picking. I live alone now, so saying family is my main priority wouldn’t be right. But at one point in my life that was true. (Gesturing at the photographs in the room) Money is important; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. My mom used to say: “Money isn’t everything, but you can’t say it’s nothing either. You have to strike a balance.” It’s a practical need in today’s world. (He got up as he was saying this and fetched a book with Shivapuri Baba on the cover.) Have you guys heard about this guy? Look at this guy! Look at the sparkle in his eyes! He lived in the forests during his 20’s, during the prime of his life. Well, you can’t dream of doing that now, money is too important. Fame is vain, fickle and vain. If you rely on fame wholeheartedly you are vulnerable and dependent on others. People may decide to stop liking you for some reason, and it’s out of your control. 48

March/April 2013

Profession’s the same way. You can’t relate your identity with your profession. If some day your profession is taken away from you, you remain standing and you have to have something to show. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket and rely on your profession to identify you. Character and personality are what matters most.” TNM: To sum it all up, what do you wish for before you kick the bucket? RH: The first thing on my list is making a film and I’m really serious about it. I really want to get into directing and I am searching for the right subject. But if I don’t do it in a couple of years, I might have to chuck it off the bucket list. Second, I want to travel my country on a good long extended trek. I also want to visit countries that I haven’t been to in Africa and South America. Getting married is on the list too; it’s something that I definitely have to do! And I want to age gracefully as I don’t want to be a grumpy old man screaming at everyone. Though I guess, it’ll be another phase of my life. Even after a decade of working day and night, Mr. Hamal still manages a packed daily schedule with a wide range of activities from movie shootings, attending charitable causes, social shows nationwide, brand endorsements and hosting television to representing WWF Nepal as their Goodwill Ambassador for Conversation of Tigers. And whenever he is free from all these commitments, he prefers to spend some quality time alone at his residence, submerged in his books. Now, reflecting upon the output we have experienced and achieved, we really don’t think that there could have been a better personality who could have graced the cover of our first ever issue as ‘The Nepali Man’, leaving us completely inspired with a whole new perspective to life.

THE LUCKY

THIRTEEN

your best ways to magnetise a woman with words according to aditya malla

W

We Nepalese men are not exactly known for our silver tongue with the ladies. Chances are that talking to women may not be the biggest gun in your arsenal. Our upbringing may be to blame here as most of us men are never actually taught how to tactfully talk to women. No doubt, some of us go through life without being able to attract as many women as we’d like. But of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that things can’t change. Talking to a woman doesn’t have to be difficult. You just need to be aware of what they are turned on by and what turns them off. So here are 13 quick tips that should guide you in wooing that beautiful dame you’ve been eyeing for the past few weeks or even years. Follow this list below and you should do just fine. 1. Tread on topics that give you a chance to showcase your emotional side. The safest bet to start up a conversation is to ask about her childhood memories, ambitions and passions. These topics will open up her emotional floodgates, so hold on tight. But watch your step as you do not want to be sucked into the forsaken friendship zone. Avoid being too personal or intrusive. 2. Women want a guy who is not afraid to take the lead. While talking to a woman take the lead on setting the topic or tone of conversation. Don’t wait for her to dictate what you’ll be talking about and she will appreciate the confidence. But talk about something she can relate to and will enjoy listening to, rather than blabbering about last night’s game. 3. Her actions speak as loudly as her words. Pay attention to the non verbal cues a woman is

52

March/April 2013

giving you. Well, if you’re standing too close to her and accidentally spitting when you talk, her non verbal cues may not be too difficult to decipher. But whatever the case is, she will send you the hints. Pay attention to them. 4. Remember this motto, ‘Fun not Funny’. Women are attracted to men who make their time together enjoyable and fun. Don’t concentrate on having only the funniest jokes. Concentrate on showing them a good time. Studies have shown that during an initial contact, it’s psychologically impossible to dislike someone who has made you laugh genuinely for 5 times or more. 5. Tease women. One of the easiest ways to take a conversation to a fun and flirty level is to tease your female compatriot. Don’t offend her though. Think back to your time on the playground. Don’t end up pulling her pigtails or scribbling on her face, but tease her in a way which has her blushing and giddy with laughter. Avoid ending up with a slap across your face. 6. Get intimate with her. Hold on, we didn’t mean that. Pull your pants back up! By getting intimate, we suggest that you delve into more personal things. Women are turned on by men who are not afraid to take a conversation to a personal, intimate level. Now, wipe that drool off your face. 7. Women love to hear opinions about themselves. Tell her what you observe about her. Admire her, charm her. But avoid complimenting a woman too much. If you are complimenting a woman too much, she will think you’re trying to impress her. Well, you are trying to impress her but it is best that you not make it too damn obvious. And don’t end up criticizing her too soon, especially

about her looks. 8. Remember, ‘Statements over Questions’. Instead of asking, “Where did you grow up?” say, “You don’t look like you grew up around here!” This allows you to make observations about her and express your personality. 9. Do not compliment her on her eyes, looks or body too soon in the conversation. When complimenting her, flattering the girl on her bodily aspects too soon may make you seem vague and materialistic. You don’t want to be taken for that just another guy trying to get into her pants. Just compliment her on something you genuinely find attractive, and mean them. Admiring her uni-brow is not the best of ideas. 10. Avoid the Friendship Zone. Don’t blurt out that you want to get her in bed, but make it clear that you want to be more than friends. If you don’t, you run the risk of winding up in the ‘Friendship Zone’. 11. Use conversation games to keep the mood fun and flirtatious. Games can be anything extreme like “truth or dare” or to the less extreme games like the “5 questions game”. Interesting games like these will keep a conversation going if you hit a dead end. 12. Don’t give away your hand so fast. Women like men who are a challenge. If you want to keep a woman’s interest, she has to feel like she is slowly winning you over. If she thinks you’re too easy, she’ll lose interest soon. 13. Listen. Listen, Goddamit! Your heroic adventure stories can wait. It is much safer than talking too much and rather making yourself look like a fool.

TIMELESS TREND bringing back the denims spring style

W

DENIMOLOGY Denim at its most basic is a simple cotton fabric. But it has created one of the most enduring and beloved fashion items in recent history – JEANS. So when it comes to men’s casual wear, Denims have been a timeless trend. Over the years, Denims have managed to become that must have item in the wardrobe as it perfectly shows off that masculine and cool factor in men.

JACKETS

Don’t we all love Denims? Aren’t most of us interested in knowing about the latest styles of jeans that are being worn by the hottest celebrities? Don’t we like getting tips on how to dress up our denim, or even dress it down? So if you are fashionable kind that really swears by denims, then you’ve got your eyes glued in just the right place. Keeping in mind that spring is just around the corner and staying in line with the fashion industries denim highlights for 2013, we have lined up a whole lot of new ranges of colours and styles for men’s denim wears. Here we have made sure that we have got you covered from top to bottom. HOW TO CARRY OFF YOUR DENIMS: # The key to fashionably mixing denims in your apparel highly depends on your choice of the hues. You really can’t mix a denim jacket and jeans that are of the same colour. For instance, be sure to juxtapose a dark wash against a wash of lighter tones. # The signature light blue and white denims take a back seat this Spring. Vibrant hues like vivacious orange and pulsating red take the centre stage this season. Many men seem to consider bold colour palettes way too girlish, but this new style combined with a nice poolside tan, is the one that apparently has the ladies lining up. # Dress up your casual denim outfit with a cool pair of moccasins, boat shoes or chukka boots and have the girls go crazy over you. (Find these shoe styles in our spring kicks section in the next page) All of these looks are easy to recreate and, better yet, extremely affordable with the choices available in town. These days Denims can be found everywhere you look, in a variety of colours, style and trends. Have fun and be creative with your outfit. Don’t throw away the items that you already own just to stay in trend. Blend with what’s new and discover new masterpieces in your closet. Manipulating what you own and adding structure to it is what style is all about. And don’t forget to carry it off with panache. Nothing looks better on a man than heaps of confidence. Enjoy what you wear.

“D o you s pend time with y our family ? Good. Because a man that does n’ t s pend time with his family can nev er be a real man.” Don Vi to Corl eone T he Godfather (1972)

T

This was perhaps the most famous statement Marlon Brando expressed as Don Vito Corleone in an epic extravaganza of one of the finest American films ever made - “The Godfather”. You might recognize Marlon Brando because of his role as Don Vito, but there is much more to Marlon Brando than just being The Godfather. Marlon Brando, changed modern acting by popularizing ‘The Method’, a technique which further emphasized on emotional truth and naturalistic style. Considered as one of the greatest and most influential actors of the 20th century, Marlon Brando became renowned for his ‘mumbling’ diction and exuding a raw animal magnetism. Born Marlon Brando Jr. on April 3, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, “Bud” Brando was one of three children to alcoholic parents. Marlon was a difficult child and was expelled from a number of his schools. With his father away on the road and his mother frequently intoxicated, the young Marlon would play-act to draw her out of her stupor and to attract her attention and love. Such and other traumatizing events may have been the grain that irritated the oyster of his talent, producing the pearls of his performances. Acting was the only thing Marlon was good at and

he was determined to make it his career. A high-school dropout, Marlon was rejected by the military due to a knee injury and ultimately had nothing else to fall back on other than acting. Marlon Brando made his professional debut in 1943’s Bobino. He then started acting on Broadway in 1944 starring in ‘I remember Mama’. For 1946’s Truckline Cafe, the critics voted him Broadway’s Most Promising Actor. Brando’s

Acting was the only thing Marlon was good at, for which he received praise, so he was determined to make it his career.

groundbreaking star role came in 1947 with A Streetcar Named Desire. He stunned audiences with a performance of remarkable honesty, sexuality, and intensity. And overnight he became the rage of Broadway. Hollywood immediately came calling, but Brando refused and this made Hollywood want him that much more. Finally, in 1950 Brando agreed to star in the independent Stanley Kramer production ‘The Men’ as a paraplegic war victim. In typical Method fashion, he spent a month in an actual veteran’s hospital in preparation for the role. The movie was not a commercial hit, but critics praised Brando’s performance. In 1951, director Elia Kazan with Brando reprised their earlier work for a screen adaptation of Streetcar. The results were hugely successful; the picture won an Academy Award for Best Film and even earned Brando his first Best Actor nomination. In 1954, The Wild One casted Brando as the rebellious leader of a motorcycle gang and forever established him as a poster boy for attitude and angst. That same year, he delivered perhaps his ultimate screen performance as a washed-up boxer in Kazan’s visceral On the Waterfront. Marlon Brando finally won an March/April 2013

Academy Award and the film garnered Best Picture honors as well. However, his next picture, Desiree turned out to be his first disappointment. In 1958’s The Young Lions, Brando costarred for the first and only time with Montgomery Clift; another great actor of his generation. It was a hit, but his next project, The Fugitive Kind, was a financial disaster. Brando rejected numerous screenplay revisions, and MGM spent a record 19 million dollars to bring ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ to the screen. When it too failed, his diminishing boxoffice stature together with his increasingly unpredictable behavior made him a target of ridicule for the first time in his career. The downward spiral continued throughout the 60’s but, things were eventually destined to change and Brando’s rebirth began with 1972’s The Godfather. Onscreen, Brando was brilliant, delivering his best performance in well over a decade. He won his second Academy Award, but became the subject of much controversy when he refused the honor and sent a Hispanic actress to the Oscar telecast podium to deliver a speech attacking the U.S. government’s history of crimes against the native population. Brando had become a favorite controversial topic and was amidst it again upon the release of 1973’s Last Marlon Brando was one Tango in Paris; of the most celebrated though critically and influential screen acclaimed, the and stage actors of the picture was postwar era; he rewrote as the rules of performing, denounced and nothing was ever the obscene in many quarters. same again. 72

March/April 2013

Although Marlon Brando recovered from his slump with the Godfather and Last Tango in Paris, he appeared onscreen after a break of 3 years returning in 1966 with The Missouri Breaks. It had become clear that Brando continued acting only for the money and it became more apparent when he appeared in a

cameo in 1978’s Superman, earning an unprecedented $3.7 million. His next couple of appearances featured in 1979’s Vietnam epic Apocalypse Now and 1980’s The Formula. And for a decade, Brando vanished, living on his island in the Pacific, growing obese, and refusing the limited offers for him to come back to Hollywood. The world would finally get to see Brando in action in the 1989 anti-

Apartheid drama A Dry White Season which also earned him an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as an attorney. Tragedy struck in 1990 when his son, Christian, killed the lover of Brando’s pregnant daughter, Cheyenne. Christian was found guilty of murder and imprisoned but even more tragically, Cheyenne later committed suicide. Because of financial difficulties, Brando reluctantly returned to performing, appearing in the atrocious Christopher Columbus: The Discovery in 1992. Don Juan DeMarco, co-starring Johnny Depp, followed in 1995, and after 1996’s The Island of Dr. Moreau, Brando starred in Depp’s directorial debut The Brave. In 1998. He appeared in Yves Simoneau’s Free Money as well. In between all this, he also wrote an autobiography, ‘Songs My Mother Taught Me’. Brando’s last movie ‘The Score’ released in 2001. Even though the film’s production was tormented with Brando’s bizarre behavior and on-set tirades, moviegoers remained eager to see the actor reteam with former Godfather cohort Robert DeNiro. Taking a break from screen for the next three years, Brando then passed away in 2004 of pulmonary fibrosis. Shortly before his death, Brando left behind recorded voice parts for an animated film called Big Bug Man and a Godfather videogame. Simply put, Marlon Brando was one of the most celebrated and influential actor of the post-war era. He rewrote the rules of performing, and nothing was ever the same again. He is one of the screen’s greatest enigmas, and never will be another quite like him.

TNM CULTURE: MUSIC

A Y A M C I T S ACOU stay true. stay acoustic.

Words: Aditya Malla Photography: Ayush Birendra Bajracharya

t

They say that music is food for the soul. Not that I did not agree to this popular statement. But it sure was more than reassuring after the quick rendezvous with the band members from ‘Acoustic Maya’. Professionally, Avash Niroula is a consultant, Avinash Pradhan an entrepreneur, Gaurav Basnyat a dentist, and Pravin Bhattarai an ex-deputy manager of an international airline. So when put together, a musical band is probably the last expected outcome of this varied combination. However, in spite of their professional commitments, the hunger for music was more than enough for this group of four men to come together and form a musical band back in 2009. With a strong belief that making music shouldn’t be just for the sake of earning fortune or fame, they are a bunch of aspiring musicians. Music for them is truly the coming together of mind, body and soul. With Avash on Vocals, Avinash on Bass, Gaurav on Guitars/Back Vocals/ Keys and Pravin on Percussions, they have been wooing crowds with their live performances at various locations around town. Currently though, Tsewang (FULL NAME) handles the percussion duties as Pravin is based out of the country. So

here’s what these passionate men of music had to say more on their ‘maya’ or love for music. 1. How did you come up with the name of your band? As we were certain that we would not be making the use of drums in our performance, Avash and Gaurav had initially decided on the name Acoustix. Then after some further brainstorming, the original name transformed to Acoustic Maya. 2. What genre of music is the band focused on? Who are your major influences? Our genre ranges from Rock to Funk & Blues. So we cannot really pin down a single genre. In other words, we play from Acoustic Maya to Electronic Mess. Major influences for the band members includes Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Who, Doors and basically the music from 60’s and 70’s. Apart from them it would be Incubus, The Killers and Coldplay among others. 3. Tell us more about the musical instruments that the band uses? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/colour preference?

Our instruments range from locally made percussions to internationally famed guitars. The current instruments on our inventory include a Fender Telecaster Guitar, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, Yamaha Pacifica Electric Guitar, Ibanez Bass Guitar, Yamaha Keyboard, a Harmonica, some egg shakers and a locally made Djembe and Cajon. Wow! Isn’t that actually quite a lot of instruments? 4. Where and when did you first perform together? Name your favourite venue for live performances? Do you have any upcoming shows? We don’t exactly remember the dates. But our first show was at the Lakhey Restro Bar sometime in 2010. It was for this show that had us frantically deciding upon a band name. No such favourite venue so far, but our show at Attic was very much liked by all present and we are planning a show there once again. A few places have been talking with us too and we are planning to do a few more gigs in the coming months. 5. How do you define your success? First of all, success for us isn’t really about making an impact as mainstream musicians. Right now, success for us is just

making sure that we make some music and nothing else. So as far as that is concerned, we guess we are quite there already. 6. We hear that Acoustic Maya has been working on their first album. So what kind of compositions are we looking forward to? Yes, we have a long list of upcoming songs for the new album sometime this year. Our songs will be very relative to the current trends and situations. Of course, there will be the usual songs that relate to love and tragedy too. 7. How has your music evolved since you first began playing together? Well, we are always experimenting with our music. So we keep learning new things every other day as we move along. But over the years, we definitely have become more refined with our performances. And it sure still is a long way to the top if you wanna rock & roll! 8. As a music band, what has been your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge for the band would be making the time to rehearse together. All of us are working professionals and at times it gets difficult to have all of us present under one roof.

The ultimate goal should be to bring everyone together with music.

9. Your advice to all those looking forward to forming their own music bands? First of all, do it only if you truly love and enjoy your time with music. Don’t try too hard in replicating the exact original song. Be creative and rather give it your personal touch. Connect with each other and connect with the crowd. The ultimate goal should be to bring everyone together with music.

March/April 2013

Mandil Pradhan

was always a man with a plan, or was he?

He established probably the first premium event and brand management company, Party Nepal in 2003. A company which took the party lifestyle of the country to a whole new level, Party Nepal was a huge success. Living the ‘good’ life partying with great food and unlimited flow of booze, Mandil nearly ended up hitting the triple digits on the weight scale. Thus, Mandil Pradhan decided to radically switch careers to pursue his passion for cycling and get back in shape as well. And this venture not only brought him down on the scale, but he managed to establish one of the most popular cycling adventure company in Nepal as well – Himalayan Rides. So TNM caught up with the man himself who is the talk of the town.

TNM: Saying your career choices have varied would be an understatement. Tell us how you got into it all. MP: A little background will paint a better picture. I basically started mountain biking in 1997 while I was studying in Rato Bangala School. We had a teacher, Tom Greenaway, who took us riding on the weekends. Back then, as the traffic wasn’t so heavy, we used to ride to school every morning. So that’s how it actually began. Then I finished school and I completely stopped cycling. Soon, Party Nepal happened. I was in it for six years, and when I left, it was at the top of its game. It was important for me to make sure that I left when Party Nepal was prospering, because leaving Party Nepal had nothing to do with how well it was doing; or the contrary for that matter. To do a job, I have to love what I am doing; I’m quite stubborn that way. With Party Nepal, it was my passion. I loved it when I was 18 or 19 years old. I loved going to parties and organizing parties. For a long time, my lifestyle was completely different. I was leaving the house at 9:30 at night and getting back at around 5am on a regular basis back then. Then I started mountain biking again in 2008 and all of a sudden I started enjoying it. But there was no way I could sustain both partying and cycling. So I made the choice. I chose cycling.

that’s the kind of life I was leading; eating a lot, drinking a lot and smoking a lot. My life used to revolve around Thamel and Durbar Marg. Now, I wake up at 5:30 in the morning and go riding, to beautiful places meeting a lot of people. All of a sudden, it became difficult to associate with the party scene because I was living a completely different life; night and day. The people I was meeting during the day were completely different from those I was meeting at night. Come to think of it, the change was pretty inevitable. TNM: How did you keep at it and stay motivated? MP: I guess this is where my stubbornness comes to play. When I do something I’m persistent, obsessive even. TNM: What would be the highlights of your career? MP: I was 18 or 19, and I was regularly on the media with interviews and all. I remember all of it, and it was a very good time then. When I look back, I think I learned a lot of things and for my age and accomplished a lot too. I did what I could. TNM: In your opinion, do you need to work hard or work smart to get to the top?

MP: Yeah, I think it took everyone by surprise, my friends, family and even me.

MP: You’ve got to work hard when you have to, as there is no other way. But you don’t have to work hard all the time. You have to work smart too. You have to be in the right place at the right time. In both of my careers, I have been there at the right times.

TNM: Especially your weight loss, I recall you being a few sizes larger…to put it lightly.

TNM: Considering the current scene of Nepal, what do you have to say for the entrepreneurs out there?

MP: I was closing in on a 100kgs. But

MP: I think the scene here is amazing.

TNM: It was a pretty drastic change, wouldn’t you say?

I was closing in on a 100kgs. But that’s the kind of life I was leading; eating a lot, drinking a lot and smoking a lot. It’s fantastic. But people whine and complain a lot. Yeah, we don’t have electricity, the government isn’t stable and what-not. But tough luck, you have to tackle the obstacles. For every negative thing, there can be 10 more positive things. We have very great young people coming up and it’s just a matter of harnessing the right kind of people. I hear a lot about labour problems in the country, but I guess it’s all about choosing the right people and managing them. You can’t always think about getting rich by screwing everyone else. You have to make sure that the people who work for you are looked after. You do that and they will look after you as well. Furthermore, the business situation in Nepal is going to change for positive. The thing is: Kathmandu is not Nepal, it’s just a city. There are a lot of cities and opportunities outside Kathmandu which are yet to be explored. Recently I have been travelling a lot and Kathmandu is a sad story whereas the rest of Nepal is full of opportunities. TNM: Do you have any advice for the youngsters who are starting out in the real world? MP: Money is secondary. If you are really passionate and creative about what you do, you can create your own niche in the market. I think there are a lot of opportunities especially in a growing economy like Kathmandu, but you need to do your research well. Things really common in other worlds can be a new innovation for Nepal. The bottom line is, you have to love what you’re doing and be passionate about it. Eventually commercial success will come by. There are positive opportunities everywhere. You just really need to find it. March/April 2013

FINDING YOUR

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY The Best Times in your Life to Start a Business Compiled By: Saurav Nepal So, when is the right time to start a business? This is arguably the most asked question in the world. Is it when you just graduate, or is it when you are in your mid-40 with a professional work experience? Starting a business in your 20’s and starting in 40’s is a completely different thing. Someone in his/her 20’s is full of hope with the hunger to achieve, but with less money in the pocket. But someone in their 40’s will have a good bank balance, a lot of professional work experience and a good PR connection

that they can leverage. Well, the best time in your life to start a business doesn’t actually really matter with your age. The only thing that counts is what you are willing to do in your life and whether you are ready to face new challenges or not. NEPALESE FOOTBALL COACHES

THE RISE OF A NEW ERA / THE BEGINNING OF A NEW DAWN INTERVIEW: SAURAV NEPAL

We, Nepalese are quite patriotic folks. Whether its sports, international awards or any reality shows, that famous “gorkhali instinct” unites us all (pun intended). Considering the past Indian Idol and CNN hero’s achievements, no one dares question our support towards our fellow countrymen. The same case is with football (our holy sport) but here we have an onoff relationship. Over a couple of years, the Nepalese football scene has experienced a lot of ups and downs. The poor performance in last year’s AFC Qualifiers and SAFF championship exposed all the problems of the National Team. Nepal’s average FIFA ranking is high as compared to other South Asian nations but within last year it drastically dropped from 153 to 170 position. ANFA realizing this pulled off their sleeves and appointed a new coaching duo last month. 84

March/April 2013

Jack Stefanowski and Richard Orlowski are currently the head and the assistant coach of the Nepal National Football Team. Stefanowski, 37 and Orlowski, 54 are both Poland-born New-Yorkers. The appointment of foreign coaches is part of the agreement between ANFA and Plus One, a US-based sports manufacturer. Stefanowski has 14 years of coaching experience at all levels from college-level to regional and national teams. Having managed a string of teams in the US and Puerto Rico, head coach Stefanowski also holds the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) ‘A’ coaching license,

US Soccer Federation’s ‘B’ coaching license and ‘National Goalkeeping License’. He has also coached in the CONCACAF Championship League for 5 consecutive years and in 2010, he eliminated the reigning MLS champions the Los Angeles Galaxy from the league. He has also played professional level football with teams like New York Wolfpacks Weston, Irish Rovers SC, Brooklyn Knights, Istria SC, and Long Island Rough Riders. The head coach Stefanowski will be earning a monthly wage of 8000$ while the assistant coach Richard Orlwoski will be earning 3000$ a month. Both the coaches’ salaries will be paid by Plus One as a part of the agreement with ANFA.

Speaking exclusively with TNM, the humble head-coach Stefanowski highlighted the opportunities and challenges lying within the team and stressed upon the need to raise the bar of the Nepalese National Football Team. Below are the excerpts:

Stefanowski: We are helping the team to develop a positive mind-set regarding the game. The team is already playing with full strength and a winning mentality. The players should have an optimistic attitude because winning and losing is both the part of the game. We experimented with the 4-3-3 formation during the qualifiers. Well, it suited the team but we failed to create any chances. We are evaluating different strategies and combinations for the team. TNM: What do you look for in your players? Are there certain characteristics, other than skills?

TNM: Congratulations on taking the reins of the national team. Since, this is your first time in Asia let Nepal alone so, how is the feeling right now? Stefanowski: Thank you. Well, it feels awesome to be here. The atmosphere is good. We are working hard to raise the standards of the National Football Team and are looking forward to develop the whole system from grassroots level. TNM: How do you define the current National team? Are you impressed with the performance in the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers? Right again, we lacked the goal-scoring capabilities, how are you going to change this? Stefanowski: The team is actually brilliant. We are impressed with the quality of players Nepal has. But, there are certain areas that need to be strengthened. Yes, we were defeated by Bangladesh and limited to a goalless draw with Palestine. Our team was exposed on so many fronts. The attacking and the midfield areas need a big shakeup. We’ve highly prioritized these weak areas and have already started working on it. Since, it is a step-by-step process; hence, it will take some time to show the end results. Though we could not make it through the qualifiers, we are however very optimistic regarding the future of Nepali football. TNM: What is your football philosophy? What strengths do you feel that you’ll bring to the team? Any fixed formation for the team?

Stefanowski: : A good player should be an active listener and an excellent performer. He should provide endless drive to the whole team. A good team is constructed upon the shoulders of all the players. Every single entity plays a significant part in the team. We are looking forward to the experienced players for building a strong foundation for the team. Veteran players like Sagar Thapa, Jumanu Rai and Anil Gurung should motivate the new-comers. They should be a perfect role-model for the whole team. It’s not only the playing 11 but also the officials and the fans that are instrumental in accomplishing the team goals. TNM: Since, we have less regional football tournaments, what plans do you have for the off-season training sessions? Stefanowski: For off-season sessions, we’ll be having warm-up matches and friendlies. Before the qualifiers also, we had friendlies with the Pakistan National Football Team. We are focusing more on international friendlies because the national team needs international exposure. We are also developing special packages for the training sessions and players. Regular practice sessions, timely interactions with the players and officials, well-developed strategies and an excellent fitness regime are on the top of our priority list. TNM: Nepal’s average FIFA ranking was high as compared to other South Asian Countries but within last year it drastically dropped below. We now stand in the 175th position. Our play might have improved on certain positions but still, we lag behind on match-winning performance. The team also couldn’t deliver in the AFC Qualifiers. Where do you think we will head now? Stefanowski:

Yes,

We had a winning mentality for the campaign but the Bangladesh game became the turning point. That match was marred with bad refereeing decision also. The team lacked scoring capabilities and play creation but we had a positive mind-set for the Palestine game. We played good football against them but unfortunately we couldn’t qualify to the next round. In spite of being bowed-out, we are satisfied with the performance. The team has improved a lot. We will now work hard to improve our performance for the SAFF Championship. TNM: We respect you stepping forward to coach and hope that you’ll have a big impact on the team. At last, what message do you have for the fans? Stefanowski: Thank you, we feel honoured. Speaking about the fans, we saw a lot of energy during the recently concluded AFC Qualifiers. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by the fans is electrifying and immense. It gave us goose bumps. The supporters here show lots of passion and affection for football. If the team doesn’t deliver any positive results then, we’ll have to handle lots of criticisms from the fans. All we can say is that it’s all part of the job because re-building a team requires patience from all the fronts. For now, let’s work together, and be optimistic.

cross roads where leisure, recreation and fitness meet is a phenomenon which had not been explored before in our beautiful city. The introduction of Futsal, which is a shorter, faster version of the 11- a side football, in Kathmandu, has given the football crazy youth another dimension to express their creativity on the pitch. The inherent problems (playgrounds READ: fields with potholes in the summer, fields with puddles in the monsoons) we faced before have been addressed in a comprehensive manner. With FIFA approved astro-turfs and lighting that shines as bright as the talent on the pitches, Nepal can finally boast some decent sporting infrastructure.

Sport is an addiction which should be encouraged. I would rather be addicted to sports than be addicted to substances! This is where the futsal pitches have been a game-changer. The green turf has an addictive aura to it. After a long 86

work-day, people need an escape, a refreshing one at that. Socializing and meeting new people with like-minded interests (FOOTBALL) is just an added benefit on top of having fun and more importantly giving that body some much needed cardio. Although the sport has recently been introduced in Nepal, the number of facilities providing futsal has increased and it wont long before we see futsal pitches mushrooming in other parts of the country. The futsal fad is here to stay and I for one am greatly pleased about it. The recent spate of tournaments shows that the public is taking a liking to the sport; the love we have for futsal’s more famous cousin (FOOTBALL again) is visible here too. Who knows, with the introduction of futsal, the technical aspect of our much loved game might improve so that Nepal can finally fulfill the dreams of our football-glory-starved nation. All this talk about futsal has made me want to go play now. See you on the pitch!
