aterial things in life lose a lot of their value when you start looking at the bigger picture; easier said than done. Spirituality is a popular topic of debate these days. Some try to force the concept down people’s gullets while some accuse it of being nothing but a bunch of old wives’ tales to brain wash people. You are entitled to your opinion, but it’s a better idea to find some sort of balance between the two extremities. The rat race for the material pleasures of life takes a toll on your mind and body, and it cannot be denied. However, not everyone is cut out to sacrifice the luxuries of life. And as explained by Swami Anand Ramesh, president of Osho Tapoban, it isn’t supposed to be that way either. The foggy nature of the subject has led to many conflicting view points, and consequently people tend to make a bigger ordeal about spirituality. Whatever the case, evidences suggest that people undertaking a more spiritual lifestyle experience a significant change in their lives. A perfect case in point is this month’s cover guy, the flute maestro: Manose Singh. Enraptured by the beautiful melodies of the flute at an early age, Manose honed his abilities on the flute over the years. Today, he tours more than 30 countries a year playing his music. Despite the dream lifestyle, something in his heart has compelled him to want to come back to Nepal. The mesmerizing and magnetic Jharana Bajracharya Rashid, known for her bold nature and ravishing beauty has also overhauled her way of life. Glamour girl to meditation instructor, Jharana has lived her life on her own terms and taken every event of life in stride. No longer overpowered by the glitz and glamour, her shift to a more grounded lifestyle has made her that much more desirable in our eyes. For those of you who feel the same way, we introduce you to our first TNM Woman. We are extremely excited to introduce this much anticipated section, and we hope we hope you like it. Your response has spurred the TNM team to work harder and more diligently every issue and we promise to keep it coming throughout the following issue. Cheers!

A TERRIFIC CAMERA IN A TERRIFIC PHONE The Nokia Lumia 1020 represents something fairly remarkable: the nearly flawless melding of a smartphone and a camera. One that, most remarkably of all, works as advertised.

the

The announcement of the 808 Pureview 17 months back brought no shortage of stunned faces. Who would have thought a dead-on-arrival product would be a show-stealer in 2012? The idea of a 41 MP camera in a phone was an industry first. Now, it turns out that the 808 Pureview which was the culmination of five years’ worth of industry experts was just a testphase for a bigger product down the line: the Lumia 1020. The phone is humungous, without any doubt. At 10.4mm thick, it is slightly thinner than the Lumia 920, which is an already thick phone by today’s standards. The thickness doesn’t account for the hump in the back which props the phone

up an angle when it rests on a flat surface. In many ways, 1020 feels like the 920 plus the camera lens. The 1020 uses a unibody polycarbonate chassis as with the other Lumia products, and is extremely wellbuilt, just what we expect from Nokia. The Gorilla Glass 3 on the front of the 1020 is flush with the edges so you don’t feel disruptions when you run your hands along the edges. The OLED display, 4.5 inches, 1280x768 (334ppi) is lifted straight off the 925, it is crisp and accurate. The blacks are indistinguishable from the bezel and the display itself feels expansive than normal. The viewing angles are incredibly wide; the screen is easy to see in direct sunlight; and the colors pop without overdoing it on saturation.

100% Zoom

fb.me/TNM.Magazine | softrock.com.np

The protruding module, the wondrous sounds of a mechanical shutter, two different types of flash, the list goes on. You cannot not miss the camera in Lumia 1020’s existence. Its whole purpose is to ensure that you can get the closest to D-SLR like imaging. And thanks to a huge 1/1.5 inch sensor (the Samsung GS4 is 1/3.06 inch, whereas HTC’s One is 1/3 inch), the 1020 takes better pictures than any phone and is more or less similar to mid-range point and shoot cameras. From the remarkable dynamic range to the astonishing clarity, it’s just a phenomenal camera. I tried to look for imperfections in the sample pictures but most of the photos have next to nothing. It’s that good. Cleary there’s some kind of magic happening in Finland. The Lumia has a 41 MP sensor but due to the physics of square sensors and round lenses, you’re limited to either 34 or 38 MP shots depending on the settings. The pictures you see, save and share are even smaller, at 5 MP. Each pixel in the smaller resolution is done by a method called

Nokia’s ProCam app: Drag the virtual shutter key slightly to the left and something that looks like your grade school’s diagram of the Solar System appears before your very eyes.

oversampling the seven pixels around it – Nokia calls it a ‘super pixel’. Shooting with so many megapixels has another benefit, a hugely powerful 6x digital zoom without losing data along the way. Thanks to image stabilization (yes, it has an optical image stabilization) photos tend to be clear no matter what. There’s a handy tool for zoom and reframing your photos called the Nokia’s ProCam app. It is one of the most comprehensive WP8 imaging app and arguably the best across any platform. The user experience is pretty intuitive and it has more manual adjustments than we are used to enjoying. It’s set up as a series of sliders, each one representing a different adjustment setting: white balance, manual focus, ISO settings (upto 3200), shutter speed (1/16,000 to 4 seconds) and EV are all here, many of which have the ability to adjust in real time. So, there’s the industry-leading camera but how does the phone perform, aside from it? Pretty well. Was there any doubt? Regardless of the views towards Windows Phone, I’ve rarely encountered any problems on WP8 (I currently use the 920). Sure, the app eco-system is not as extensive as its counterparts but it’s growing day by day. Plus, there are some really great third-party apps which can do the same work as the official ones and in some cases, even better. It features the same S4 chipset with Adreno 225 GPU as the 920 but with an increased 2 gigs of RAM. The

WHAT DOES 41MP MEAN? The 808 PureView camera boasted a whopping 41-megapixel CMOS, which sounds intimidating -- after all, the mainstream smartphone market still hadn’t begun producing devices with 13MP cameras yet, so 41 felt like an awfully big leap. In short, the magic is in oversampling. While it’s possible to snap 38MP (and 34MP wide-angle) images at will, the 808 has a “creative mode” which takes lower-res shots -- eight, five and three megapixels, to be precise. Not only are these images easier to share, the phone oversamples the images, which means it combines several pixels to create one high-quality superpixel. The idea behind this is to add sharpness, reduce noise, eliminate Bayer-pattern problems and improve low-light performance. It also helps the camera achieve another superpower: lossless zoom. In other softrock.com.np | fb.me/TNM.Magazine

Yep, you guessed it! The bigger one is 1020’s sensor and the ‘tiny’ one is the 920’s.

phone seldom stutters and multitasking is incredibly smooth. It is indeed on one of the most polished operating system out there. The 1020 benefits from a 2,000 mAh battery and Windows Phone is an incredibly efficient operating system, it will easily last you a day and half, 2 days in moderate use. The 1020 is easily one of the best devices in 2013 yet. The math is simple – if you love taking pictures, you’ll love the 1020. Sure, there are lots of other devices from the classy 925 to the colorful 920 with equally great cameras but they are not this. The real question here is are people willing to take the risk with a newer and ‘unfamiliar’ operating system? Windows Phone has come a long way but current Android and iOS users will weigh the services and app selection carefully, but the decision to switch has never been so difficult.

So what’s the point of having so many pixels at one’s disposal?

words, you can zoom in on an object without losing detail and resorting to interpolation. Fast-forward to the Lumia 1020, which takes the PureView tech and improves upon it. Instead of having to choose between creative mode and highres shots, the 1020 now takes both simultaneously, giving you a 38MP photo (34MP for wide-angle) and an oversampled 5MP version with lossless zoom as well. The camera benefits from a six-element lens array (compared to the 808’s five), which consists of five plastic lenses and one made of glass. With the new device came another a shift from an FSI(Front Side Illumination) sensor to BSI(Back Side Illumination) and a wider aperture (it’s now f/2.2, compared to f/2.4 on the 808). Both of these factors equate to better low-light performance,

but that’s not all: the phone also offers barrel-shift optical image stabilization (OIS), thanks to a set of ball bearings that are moved by tiny motors anytime the gyroscope detects shaking. Pro tip: activate the camera and wobble the phone to hear the various parts moving around inside. Curiously, the Lumia 1020 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset. This is standard fare for Windows Phones, but it’s interesting to note that the SoC technically doesn’t support such high-resolution cameras. According to Anandtech’s Brian Klug, Nokia collaborated with Qualcomm to do a complete rewrite of the chipset’s imaging stack in order to make everything work properly. Source: engadget.com

Mortal Kombat Komplete (PC) Principal gameplay involves one-on-one fighting. It’s been a long time coming, but the PC version of Mortal Kombat is every bit the focused, gruesome, and ludicrously overthe-top fighter as its console counterparts, not to mention the best looking. It pushes the boundaries of taste to the extreme with eye-popping attacks that see you ripping your opponents in half, impaling them on spikes, and stamping on their chests while their internal organs bounce around like tetherballs.

Sniper Elite 2 (Wii U) Sniper Elite V2 is a tactical shooter video game developed by Rebellion Developments and published by 505 Games for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and other game console. Sniper Elite V2 is a third-person tactical shooter that emphasizes a less direct approach to combat, encouraging the player as a sniper to use stealth and keep distance from enemy soldiers. Many of the single player levels allow multiple routes for the players to take, including multistory buildings and side streets to get vantage points and avoid direct firefights. Set in World War II, the player character utilizes appropriate weapons for the era.

Dota 2 (PC) If you've never played Dota or Dota 2 before, or have any idea what they're about? Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena video game and the stand-alone sequel to the Defense of the Ancients mod. Developed by Valve Corporation, the game was released on July 9, 2013. This real time strategy game like of Dota has two strongholds containing critical structures called "Ancients" at opposing ends of a geographically balanced map. These bases are connected by three main paths (referred to as lanes), which are guarded by defensive towers and groups of units commonly referred to as "creeps" which traverse their lanes, attacking enemy units and structures upon sight. Players are split into two teams, each consisting of up to five players, to compete as the primary defenders for each Ancient. The overall objective of each match is to battle through the opposing force's defenses, and destroy the opponents' Ancient.

Jaguar is no stranger to rolling out luxury sedans, coupes and convertibles. But since the past five decades, they had shied away from their powerful heritage of performance cars. Finally, it’s their turn to get back into the game, with the Jaguar F-TYPE. Actually, your turn to get back into the game, as that’s what Jaguar wants us to believe through their marketing campaigns.

Supercharged engines, lightweight aluminium body construction and advanced driving technologies promises to deliver an experience that is intuitive, instinctive and alive.

There are three models in the range: F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Power is delivered from a range of three highly advanced engines – 3.0 V6 340PS, 3.0 V6 380PS and 5.0 V8 495PS. Each offers its own distinctive flavour and characteristics, while all are equally at home on the switchback of a mountain pass, on the highway or in the city. The V6 does a 0-100 dash in 5.3 seconds while the V8 does the same in about 4.3 seconds. The former can do a top speed of about 275kmph and the V8 tops out at 300kmph. Supercharged engines, lightweight aluminium body construction and advanced driving technologies promises to deliver an experience that is intuitive, instinctive and alive. Although Jaguar doesn’t do retro designs anymore, the F-TYPE takes a few cues from its past. The original E-TYPE had several toggle aircraft-style switches for the controls, and the same is included in the new design. Most of the functions are included in the touchscreen system, but Jaguar finds a good balance of including quick keys along the sides for common controls. Not to mention there is a convertible top as well that goes up and down in 12 seconds, which makes it one of the fastest in the world. The two-seater, which starts at $69,000 and runs up to $92,000 in the United States, is definitely not your typical father’s Jaguar. In fact, the F-TYPE collection is probably unlike any luxury oriented Jaguar we have seen before with its sporty credentials. Jaguar says, “It’s Your Turn!” Anybody?

The new range combines Ducati’s latest technologies with outstanding Italian design and engineering to write the latest chapter in the Hypermotard story.

1) Your heart is just a blood pumping station Your thoughts, your feelings, your emotions, your sentiments, all are centered in your head. It is just a fallacy to think that your feelings are in the heart. Your heart is just a blood pumping station. The truth is you can call it empty mind or you can call it empty heart it is the same.

4) The ego is a puzzle The ego is a puzzle. It is something like darkness which you can see, which you can feel, which can obstruct your way but which does not exist. It has no positivity. It is simply an absence, an absence of light. The ego does not exist – how can you surrender it? The ego is only an absence of awareness. You cannot surrender ego, because it does not exist. You can bring a little awareness, a little consciousness and a little light. Forget completely about ego and concentrate on bringing alertness into your being. The moment your consciousness has become a flame, concentrated, you will not be able to find the ego.

2) Rebellion is individual Rebellion is individual action. It has nothing to do with the crowd. Rebellion has nothing to do with politics, power and violence. Rebellion has something to do with changing your consciousness, your silence and your being. It is a spiritual metamorphosis. Each individual passing through a rebellion is not fighting with anybody else, but is only fighting with his own darkness. Swords are not needed, bombs are not needed. What is needed is more alertness, more meditation, more love, more prayerfulness, and more gratitude. Surrounded by all these qualities you are born anew.

5) Nobody really wants to be free because freedom brings responsibility Everybody wants freedom as far as talking is concerned but nobody really is free and nobody really wants to be free, because freedom brings responsibility. It does not come alone and to be dependent is simple as the responsibility is not on you. A person who really wants to be free has to accept immense responsibilities. They cannot dump their responsibilities on anybody else. Whatever they do, whatever they are, they must be responsible.

3) Relaxation is only a beginning Relaxation is good and just a beginning. It prepares the ground for meditation. But meditation is totally a different affair. One must be aware of their mind stuff. Whatever goes on in your mind you have to become a watcher, and the watcher has to be so deeprooted that slowly, slowly your mind disappears and only the watcher remains. Then all possibilities of tension, anxiety, anguish, disappear and you will not find even the conflict.

memorable teachings from osho

I don’t teach you optimism, I teach you transcendence. Illustration: Niren Tuladhar

Bhagwan Shree Rajnish, better known as Osho was an Indian mystic, guru, and spiritual teacher who garnered an international following. Osho’s ideas have been believed to widen the horizons of one’s mind and provide a positive outlook in today’s dizzying stress filled pace of life. One thing is for certain, Osho’s techniques and views did not conform to the general norm set out for spiritual teachers. However, this very uniqueness is what’s special about him. Here are some teachings of Osho that we think are worth adhering to.

6) Possessiveness Destroys Love "In my vision, marriages in the commune should be dissolved. People can live together their whole life if they want, but that is not a legal necessity. People should be moving, having as many experiences of love as possible. They should not be possessive. Possessiveness destroys love. And they should not be possessed, because that again destroys your love. 7) The cyclone is the world There is no center to a cyclone, the cyclone is the center. We have a chronic habit of dividing things into two, God and the world, body and soul, the lower and the higher, the good and bad. Once you understand this oneness of life then all tension, anxiety, anguish, disappears. The anxiety is created because you are always dividing. 8) The Seeker Is the Sought Man is almost mad because he is seeking something which he posses. Mad because he's not aware of his self being, mad because he hopes, desires and then ultimately, feels frustrated. The problem is that you have something and you are seeking it. Now, how can you find it? You are too occupied with seeking, and you cannot see the thing that you already have. Unless all seeking stops, you will not be able to see it. Seeking makes your mind focus somewhere in the future, and the thing that you are seeking is already here, now, this very moment.

Changing lifestyles When you work day and night, it’s not just your body that’s taking the brunt of the exertion. Your mind is taking a toll on itself too.

If

you don’t feel the stress of life piling on to you at one point or the other, you’re either doing something very right or you’re doing nothing at all. It is completely natural to feel the strain of the daily hustle, especially if working under a lot of pressure; and the scenario is becoming more common in Nepal. There is no particular way to relieve stress, as everyone has their own way of dealing with things. But there are ways which have been proven to work for centuries, but still remains a topic of debate for some: spirituality. Because ‘Spirituality’ the word itself is larger than life, asking what is would be an ordeal in itself. The answers are many and diverse. However, we must respect all the beliefs, ideas and practices people hold on spirituality as it is what helps

them to connect with the dimensions of the spiritual world. This alien connection that is hard to put into words is what helps people find inner peace, happiness, admiration towards life, and a passion for living. And because it is such an illusive topic, people find themselves lost in its complexity. Despite the different viewpoints, the fact that getting in touch with the more spiritual aspects of life has been adopted by many as a lifestyle cannot be denied. Thus, it is no surprise that this lucrative sector has been growing into a huge market. As more and more people begin to undertake this lifestyle, there are many facilities that are providing these services. Here are some of the top facilities in town and their perception of yoga and spirituality:

“The sound of Manose’s flutes, are the sound of the Gods. There is a direct link. If you’re open to it, they will speak through him.” — John Densmore, The Doors Always content with the simple pleasures of walking barefoot in the vicinity of Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and playing his flute in the streets, Manose Singh has come a long way from the happy-go-lucky eight year old. Fast forward 26 years and a lot of things have changed. His childhood connection with the flute and love of spirituality has now taken him around various corners of the world. And now here he is, featured as the cover story of TNM Magazine.

“At fifteen he was named as Nepal’s “Instrumentalist of the Year”. By seventeen, he was teaching the art of playing the bansuri.”

softrock.com.np | fb.me/TNM.Magazine

Manose’s love for the bamboo flute or bansuri began when he was enraptured by the beautiful sound at the tender age of eight. He describes the day as an out of the world experience where a beautiful sound wafted in through his bedroom window in the silence of the night and entranced him into a possessed state of mind with the soothing melody. Now, he would like to believe that it was Lord Krishna himself playing the flute to entice him into a helpless love for the music. He then began carrying around a two-rupee flute that he bought from a street hawker, and as the years rolled on, his passion for his music only increased. Having studied the art of music under the guidance of Guru Mandan Dev Bhatta, it wasn’t long before he was recognized as a child prodigy. At fifteen he was named as Nepal’s “Instrumentalist of the Year”. By seventeen, he was teaching the art of playing the bansuri.

A number of things happened after that. He briefly played for popular band 1974 AD, moved to the US, released five solo albums and contributed to Grammy nominated artists and performances all across the globe. Manose has now decided to return to Nepal and continue the progress here for good. Now, for someone who seems to have it going pretty well in the US, it was perplexing to comprehend the reasons as to why he would return to Nepal. I am as much of a patriot as the other guy, but surpassing a successful career path at a young age is a befuddling decision. However, he gave us some convincing reasoning when we briefly caught up with him, before he went off on another tour. TNM: How did your love affair with the bamboo flute start? MS: It may all sound like a tall story, but you’d have to be in my shoes to completely believe it. I was eight and on my bed. It was dark. The silence was then broken by a beautiful sound that took me to euphoric heights the moment I heard it. It had a certain seductive aura that completely overpowered me. Soon after learning that the sound that enticed me was that of a bansuri, I got hold of one immediately and slowly started to learn how to play it. And the funny thing is, even when I held it the first time, the bansuri did not feel like a foreign object in my hands. Before I knew it, I was a regular flutist in the streets of Boudhanath and I loved it. (A smile spread across his face at every pause he took while telling us his story. The gleam in his eyes never wavered throughout.)

Back then, there used to be full moon concerts taking place in Pashupatinath where different artist came and played devotional and classical music. Maybe that’s where my love for classical music started, especially with Indian classical music. Obviously, this was not the “trend” with the kids I was around with and consequently I was not the most popular kid of the lot. But, I couldn’t help it. Things then really started picking up for me. Although I had been playing the bansuri on my own, I hadn’t really taken up any formal classes up until I met Guru Madan Dev Bhatta at one of the concerts. He taught me my ‘Saregama’. Slowly, I started meeting other great artists and these encounters opened up the paths for me to become who I am today. By age 16, I was playing at studios and a professional musician making three to four grands a day! Can you imagine that!?

28

maybe around 2000-2002. Then things really started opening up. I felt that I needed to express myself through various genres. So I did not confine myself to just classical music. I performed with a fusion band, performed at Jazzmandu and many more performances. At the prime of his teenage years, Manose was at the top of his game. Making more money than doctors at the time, he was doing what he loved, and he was doing it well. However, the material things in life started losing its grasp on Manose and he began longing for something that had more meaning… something more valuable. After coming into the commercial scene, Manose always felt something missing, like the joy achieved in playing in the streets of Boudha.

Having seen a very good scope in the United States, Manose Singh went abroad. There, he met two types of musicians: those who made music for a living and those who made music in search of something else, a bigger picture.

Impressed by the lifestyle that he saw of some of the musicians, Manose was inspired to making his music more spiritual than commercial. In the US, he teamed up with famous musicians like Jay Mittal (Grammy Nominee), Deva Premal and Miten, and even met John Densmore - the drummer from The Doors.

MS: My first tour took me to Germany and Switzerland, where I tagged along with senior artists. Then I found myself in USA, collaborating with different artists to make music before coming back to Nepal for a stint with 1974AD. This was during their recording for Samjhi Baschu,

MS: Even though I was right there, it felt like I was missing something. I did not want to be enslaved by the material things in life; I did not want to take part in the rat race. When I played the flute here in Nepal), it was never about that… it had a sense of pureness. I just couldn’t let that

pureness fade away to nothing. So I decided to come back to Nepal. His decision to come back to Nepal took me by surprise. Let’s face it. There are very few people that would voluntarily decide to come back to Nepal without making the best use of a prospective career in the United States. Yet, he wanted to come back to Nepal! MS: It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was born to play the flute, but I also realized that my heart resides in Nepal. So I have decided to come back. Sure the country has it set of flaws, but there is no reason to not fall in love with this beautiful country. Think about this. The serene and spiritual structures at Boudhanath, Swayambhunath or Pashupatinath could have been built anywhere else in the world. But why was it still built here? It’s because Nepal has that beautiful pureness and when you realize this, you will open up to a whole new way of seeing life. TNM: A final message for our readers? MS: First let me share a personal story. One evening, I was in front of my house looking at the Boudhanath Stupa, gazing at the Buddha’s eyes, and playing my flute. An American gentleman who had been listening, then began reciting poetry to the sound of my flute. Later, I invited him back to my house to eat with me and found out he was an English professor and poet named Joe Shakarchi.

“Work sincerely without expecting returns and you will definitely succeed at some point in life.” Joe and I kept in touch. I remember him mentioning at that time that he had a friend who was quite popular in the Western Musical world but I was oblivious to. It later turned out to be John Densmore of The Doors fame. Few years later when I was in California, I got a call from John! Joe had played some of my CDs for him and he had called to invite me to join him and perform at a poetry conference with some amazing American poets. He and I hit it off immediately and became friends. We’ve done some fun collaboration together, including giving musical accompaniment to a CD that Joe created of some of his poetry. Now coming to the point, when I first met Joe I was only sincerely practicing my flute like I did every evening without any expectations. So always remember the popular Nepalese saying, “Karma gara, phal ko asha na gara”. Work sincerely without expecting returns and you will definitely succeed at some point in life.

Spiritualism unravelled S

Spirituality is a complex concept, and most of us have it all wrong.

If you look at life from a broader perspective, you realize that everyone is just a tiny part of this one living entity called Earth.

Spirituality is sometimes the most misunderstood and misrepresented aspect of life. It is being presented around the world in utterly oblivious and misleading ways. A lot of it is well-meaning, but they are largely ineffective. Because of this, the first thing that comes to many minds when you mention the words spirituality or spiritual life are monks in a monastery or a yogi up on the mountains. We are living in a time when most people refrain from talking about the topic as a whole, due to its controversial nature.

Most people, it appears to me, think of a spiritual life to be one that requires sacrificing everything and allows no fun, freedom or passion. On the contrary a true spiritual life not only takes you to heights of ecstasy you have never dreamed of, it also brings you freedom you could never imagine.

Swami Anand Ramesh is the president of Osho Tapoban – An International Commune and Forest Retreat Center. He is also a successful Industrialist but most essentially has been passionately working for the last three decades to assist in making Osho’s vision for humanity available to the world.

34

August 2013

In the past, spirituality was always at the core of all great ancient cultures. These cultures thrived in all aspects of life, be they from Europe, Asia or the Americas. Their systems were much more profound and intelligent than ours. These cultures respected mother earth and took each step with reverence. Their societies were ecologically

sustainable; all forms of art had thrived to a peak during those times. Furthermore, these cultures birthed the most brilliant minds the world has ever known and built the most elaborate and awe inspiring structures that probably could not be imitated today if we wanted to.

The practice of spirituality breaks the boundaries that we have created and we begin to experience that at a deeper level we are not individuals at all, we are all connected by a life force or energy that pervades everything. If you look at life from a broader perspective, you realize that everyone is just a tiny part of this one living entity called Earth. Such ancient people believed that every action determines the fate of Mother Earth. With such reverence and perception, these cultures could not help but thrive in harmony. But at various points in history this way of life was destroyed by the religious wars, the conquerors and then finally the industrial revolution. Although a lot of spiritual traditions were destroyed, a few still remain. In essence spirituality is the process of exploring our full potential in all dimensions. For the most part humanity has invested all effort and

attention only on one dimension, the material. We have been accustomed to believe that solutions are created by fixing things in the material world. We believe that progress in life means having more and more material things. Ultimately everyone is seeking fulfillment in life, but unfortunately we have the notion that it can be achieved through external means like money, power and status. Anyone who has all this will tell you otherwise. The truth is that we have infinite potential. The choice to be happy or sad is yours; it is only when you begin to identify yourself with the situation that you are bound by it. There are dimensions within us that we do not even imagine, but the way we think and the things we believe in creates limitations in our perception and experience. The world is in such a bad state because we live unintelligently and our understanding of life is far from reality. We are limiting ourselves by believing that we are just our thoughts, memories, emotions, possessions, status, and nationality and so on. When the fact of the matter is, we are much more than that. By using spiritual tools like meditation, one begins to observe that things like fb.me/TNM.Magazine | softrock.com.np

thoughts and emotions are just happenings that occur in our experience and that we have the choice to transcend them. We have become experts at various things, but when it comes to the self, we are the worst managers. A lot of people are struggling in the world just to survive. Still there are those of us who have all the essentials for a comfortable life but still struggle because we mismanage the self. The aspects of it that we mismanage most are thoughts and emotions. They have such power over us that it confines us to live a limited life. We are not our thoughts and emotions. We are not our possessions or relationships or status. Still, we identify ourselves with them so much that after some time it becomes our reality. It softrock.com.np | fb.me/TNM.Magazine

has become difficult for most people to carry out life with a clear perception of what is. Does it not make sense that we should first learn to manage ourselves, this piece of life, which is our body, mind and soul, the way we want it to be before we can go about doing other things? The world we are living in is our creation, we have collectively built it. It is a reflection of what is happening within us. When there is disharmony within, naturally what we create will also be of the same nature. How can we go about making a world that we want when we cannot even make ourselves the way we want? In the spiritual process the first thing we do is explore and understand ourselves. If one desires it, the science

of spirituality is still available today. I received it from Osho. He is one person who has conserved many of these spiritual sciences. He has simplified them for everyone to understand, without compromising the profoundness, in some cases even enhancing them. He has made spirituality into a fun and playful process so that we can integrate it into our lives with ease. According to him spirituality should be a natural part of life like eating or sleeping. I feel this is the only way to bring significant change to humanity’s evolutionary path. The best you can do is bring change at the personal level (you cannot change another person, you can only change yourself ) and the world will change on its own accord.

The world is in such a bad state because we live unintelligently and our understanding of life is far from reality.

what

MEN SHOULD

KNOW the secret world E

nough of the serious talks and everlasting love! Just for a change, I’m going to take your side this time men. This is what men REALLY need to know. Actually, it is no secret at all. We’ve been screaming and singing it out since the 1980s, “Girls just wanna have fun!!”

Dr. Jasmine Tenpa is a medical doctor by profession and writes as a freelancer. The article portrays her personal thoughts and observations.

If men think they are the hunters who can hunt and treat women like trophies and quests then they should know that women are gatherers and they can very much treat men like another option and choice too. It’s a funny game to play and one that is so very exciting! I can tell this to you gentlemen, no woman

actually feels racked with guilt about having too many lovers or having led an army of admirers on. It is a very pleasant satisfaction when a woman feels she is sought for. The only time she feels bad is the time she ends up with what she didn’t want or she loses out on her top choice. That’s the only time it stings, the rest is all very giddy fun and believe me, it makes up for great cocktail conversation. We women talk about everything. We gather in our pretty dresses and high heel shoes, get our wines and cocktails and then we dish. We dish out on every delectable, delicious detail of you. We will talk about the ugly colored shirt you wore, to how funny your eyebrows looked, to how dirty your feet were, the facial expression, the tone of your voice, the reply you gave, the mistake you made, the fb.me/TNM.Magazine | softrock.com.np

joke you said and each and everything there is to talk about ! And then we dissect it. We will sit and talk about why you chose to wear that ugly shirt, why you said what you did, what you must have actually meant, what you perhaps did mean, what we hoped that you’d say and how we can twist and translate what you said into what we hoped you’d say. We’ll change the tone of your voice, we’ll change the reply, and we’ll correct the mistakes. If you made us happy, we’ll make excuses for you. If you rub us the wrong way, we will take that mistake you made and slip it into an essay, a book (if we are with the right friends and have enough time) and make you elaborate that one mistake into an essay too and yes, our essays must be similar or we will make your life into a small private hell! Yes, dear men, when you date a woman, you date the voices in her head and all the girls she knows and perhaps even, that boy she has friend zoned for years. She will surround herself with like-minded friends and take their advice and judge you on it. She will judge you for your actions, your inactions, your energy, your laziness, your passion and your persona. So, if you are someone who thinks that women are limited to the kitchen, then kitchen term for you it is! In short, we slice and dice every bit of a man and if he sticks around, we will marinate him, bake him in a warm oven and prepare him for a healthy family of tomorrow. Got it? Other than talking about you, judging you and making fun of you to show off our great skills in humor and wit, what else do we do to pass our time? Mmmm… Oh yes! We also test you. We test you on your punctuality, logical and analytical skills. How you ask? It has nothing to do with sitting in front of your X-box all day. We test it by saying something that could mean anything and we’ll say it a little differently than what most things sound like. Complicated? It is actually pretty simple, for example, “I really want to have ice-cream, but I’m starting to gain softrock.com.np | fb.me/TNM.Magazine

Feeling that anger boil up in you? Here, here, here, dear men, let me tell you a secret. The test was not about deciphering the-“I want ice-cream” sentence. The test is actually about how you react and act after you’ve already reacted to it. Get it? NO! Well, I’ll repeat it, it’s not about whether or not you got us the ice-cream. It’s about what you do after we react to your reaction. That is your test! And that’s where most of you hunters fail! And believe me, it disappoints us… a lot! We invest a lot in finding the right man. The right shampoo, right moisturizer, right

lipstick, right eye shadow, right sunscreen, right dress, right shoes, right perfume. And when YOU don’t get it right despite our efforts, we seriously don’t take it lightly. We will speak of you, we will tell our sisters you are so not worth it and we will poke fun at you. However, when you do manage to be fruitful to our investments, we will first, feel pleasantly surprised and then later shower you with love and a whole lot of attention. It is just the way we are. But we will keep testing you. It never stops there! No more illusions. You will be tested throughout your life. And we women do it for your own good. To keep your wits up! To make sure your brain doesn’t dull and you remain youthful. The incidence of dementia is high in men; we only want to do you good. Being a girl is good fun. It’s the most wonderful thing to be. You wouldn’t know! But we do. There is a saying most girls know, “Let a man keep thinking he rules!” We are gracious that way and so when we say we want better, we deserve it. Carry on hunting and we shall gather too. After all, we didn’t hone our gathering skills for nothing. August 2013

TNM grooming

1.

2.

1) Be clean: Bathe your feet every day in soap and water. Just letting the shower water splash on them is not good enough. Lather them thoroughly with soap and scrub them with a scrubber. Make sure to clean the entire part of your foot be sure to wash out the yellow/black toe jam. If you have smelly feet than wash your feet with antibacterial soap

2) Dry you feet: Don’t forget to dry between the toes. Leftover moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria, which causes odor.

foot care

It’s a good idea to keep your little piggies squeaky clean Do you take care of your feet? Yes, your feet! Men tend to jump to conclusions when it comes to foot care (especially when you mention pedicures) and immediately relate it with femininity but it is much more than washing your feet or getting your toe nails clipped. You may not want pretty toes and toe nails, it is always pleasant to have your feet well cared of. In fact, it is more of a necessity than a choice. Here are the basics to keep your feet happy:

3) Select the right socks: There are socks made from wool, cotton blended with nylon, acrylic, olefins, spandex, linen, bamboo, cashmere, and mohair. They protect your feet from abrasion and help absorb moisture from the skin. Don’t forget to put on a fresh pair of socks everyday and damp socks are a big NO!

4.

5.

4) Make sure your shoes aren’t too tight: If your shoes are too tight, you tend to perspire more than usual. Trust us, you don’t need that. Wear shoes that are comfortable.

5) Change shoes: Putting on the same shoe day in day out can make your shoe smell. Put anti odor spray or let them dry out in the sun so that all the moisture inside the shoe evaporates. Some insoles and shoes are washable; especially those in sneakers. Thus wash them but be sure to dry them completely before wearing them.

7) Have your Toe nails trimmed and clean: You probably already know how to cut your toenails straight but clean them properly after cutting them because the toe nails are hiding place for bacteria.

7. 48

6. 6) Let your feet breathe: Let your feet air out by letting them spend some time in the open air, especially at night. Wear sandals and slippers if it’s too hot.

The fact of the matter is, she has transformed into much more than the glamour girl many perceive her to be. From having everything handed to her on a silver platter in Nepal to striving for an opportunity in India, she has taken every event as a learning experience to become a more composed and stable character. Having detached herself from her previous lifestyle, she has now taken up a completely new venture of teaching meditation. Having started her own meditation centre, J’s Meditation, Jharana Bajracharya Rashid has given us another reason to drool over her and her new avatar. This is the story about her transformation from a glamorous celebrity to a more grounded profession of teaching meditation. TNM: At this point of life, who is Jharana Bajracharya Rashid? JBR: Well, my career took off without any warning after being crowned Miss Nepal at 16. As expected, it was all very confusing as a lot of pressure started pilling on in a short period of time and I had nothing mapped out for my future. Then, I entered the movie business which brought along its own share of confusion. Now, 15 years later, I’m trying to know who I really am. I cannot see myself intact in the movie business because the fact of the matter is: the industry is extremely imperfect because finding something “real” in the glamour business is difficult due to the volatility of the creative process. Realizing this has definitely helped me to become more grounded than ever.

Back then, I guess I was trying to find some sort of solidity in the glamour world. Now I realize, I was not looking in the right places. Although I began to question where I was headed, it was difficult to move away from the business which was all I knew about.

something that didn’t feel like work. There were so many options and opportunities because of my stint in the glamour world which made me relatively more popular. But, I couldn’t see myself slipping into any particular job and it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do.

Right now I’ve matured in a lot of aspects and I have begun to comprehend everything I’ve done. It has been a transition of sorts to moving out of my comfort zone, which is, being a glamour person all the time. I’ve tried to make the transition as smooth as possible and learnt so many things about life and people in the process.

TNM: How did you get into teaching meditation?

TNM: Yes, it is a definite transformation, and we know from where. But where are you headed? JBR: My perception of saying and perceiving things now is from a different, personal place which incorporates spirituality. It is a process which involves transforming your own thoughts and perspectives of seeing the world and how you are connected within. The energy I live off of is different and there is no choice but to become more responsible towards myself. It’s a transition in life that everyone has to go through and learning to think twice about every aspect is part of the transition. TNM: The personality change has been evident, yes. Now, tell us about the change in your career choice. JBR: It took me a while to settle on the idea of working with meditation. I wanted to do

JBR: Well, my grandparents were practitioners of meditation, so that was one of the reasons. Also, I used to go on retreats at Vipassana before I became Miss Nepal. Overall, I loved the experience and this side of me was always with me I guess, because I loved meditation. The fact that you don’t need to belong to any religion to get into it, it’s just there for you to discover. I felt that this accessibility without having to belong was great. However, settling on the idea of teaching meditation was a totally different ordeal. Since I was connected with Goinka ji’s tradition (the Budhanilkantha Vipassana centre where I did all my retreats), I wasn’t allowed to teach as per the rules. So, I had to cut myself off from the lineage and get permission and blessings from other teachers abroad before starting to teach on my own. Although I’m not connected to Goinka externally, my core foundation stems from his teachings. TNM: How did J’s Meditation start? JBR: I had come to a certain place in life where I felt that I had to do something I learnt and was useful. While working on a play at Hotel Vajra, I met Sabina; the

director of the hotel. I fell in love with the aura of the place. Since I already had the concept of teaching meditation in mind, I asked her if I could operate classes here and she was ok with it. And then it all started.

But, now I do have the liberty to either accept an offer for a movie OR deny it and continue teaching meditation. I am no longer confined under any sort of boundary.

think it was a bad decision. TNM: Was it difficult to cope with everything that came after the controversy?

TNM: Coming back to the beginning. How did you become Miss Nepal?

JBR: Mentally, it was not an issue because I liked my work and didn’t feel like I did anything wrong.

JBR: Well, it was my mom who suggested I participate in Miss Nepal. Maybe it was because I was just loitering around on vacation for two months after my 10th grade. I thought it was a good idea and participated. And, I won!

On a professional level, however, it turned out to be a bad move. I had the potential to do good movies, but the Nepali movie industry was not ready for me at the time as there were no movie makers who were willing to take the risk of experimenting.

TNM: Is it turning out as you expected it to?

TNM: How has the journey been after becoming Miss Nepal?

JBR: Because this is the only thing that I felt I could do from my heart, it falls into place. It does not feel like work. Other than that I don’t know where it will go, because it depends on how good I am, how authentic I am and how well I can serve. People can judge me and doubt me but as soon as I sit and start to teach, it has to be real. It really depends on me and my teaching.

JBR: Miss Nepal happened. Then for some strange reason I wanted to live alone. I got myself a small place for myself in Koupondole and started living alone. I had convinced my mom I’d take care of myself, but after sometime, I was broke. Luckily, that’s when my first break for a movie came along, and they were willing to pay me Rs.60000 to act in it. At 16years old, that was a lot of money!! I was short on cash, so even though I hadn’t set out to get into movies, I didn’t have much choice.

When I went to Bombay, I realized I was not cut out for Bollywood. Getting into movies was difficult, but I worked in various commercials. One ad shoot would probably get me around INR 30,000 so doing a few per month would cut my expenses. To make it in Bombay, you either have to be a person with connections, or be a networking person. I was neither. And there was the sketchy business of going out with producers, which I was not willing to do. People will use your desperation everywhere in the world and I felt that it was just not worth it. I didn’t like it at all.

After it was initiated, I met Sushil Dai and I got into a partnership with him to act on the business side of things. From being an actress, and demanding things on set, I am now in a completely different environment where I have to take care of a business concerning my area of interest and inspiration. And I am still learning.

TNM: So, are you planning to completely disconnect from the glamour and movie business? JBR: I try not to keep things too premeditated, because I tried to plan each and every step and I found it extremely suffocating. However, I can’t deny that I’m still Jharana Bajracharya Rashid; the glamour bit is a huge part of who I am.

I was really bad at it though (laughing)! Nevertheless, the movies kept coming and I kept doing them.

Yet, I didn’t want to come to Nepal because everyone was expecting me to be the next Manisha Koirala but I was a long way away from it.

TNM: You were doing movies in Nepal, accepted. But, how did you find your way into Bollywood? How different was it from the situation here in Nepal?

TNM: You are a magnetic character and there is no doubt that there are many men who drool over you. But what would you look for in a man?

JBR: I actually never had to work for it. I got a call saying India’s production was looking for a second lead which required a role in a sort of racy song. They told me what was required and I was ok with it as long as it was shot in the right way. Then I returned to Nepal. I had a few agents calling me in Bombay but I decided to come back anyways.

JBR: I would like someone who is grounded, because my imagination and creativity takes me away a lot and I tend to look for stability in a man.

However, six months after the release of ‘Love in Nepal’ I went to Bombay and got a flat in Lokhandwala. By that time, the agents were all gone and I was jobless; an actress who never had to send out a résumé in Nepal. I was terrible in the movie business there. TNM: The video of ‘Katra Katra’ caused quite a stir here in Nepal didn’t it? JBR: Yes, there was that controversy. I was not aware of the impact it would make in Nepal. Even though I personally loved how the song came out, I couldn’t help but

TNM: What about looks and money? JBR: It’d be nice to have a pleasant looking guy, I don’t want to freak out every morning I wake up (laughs). I can make money too, so I’m not looking for a millionaire. I need someone who can work, and is not a couch potato. The first priority is he should be an earning man who is ambitious and capable. TNM: Is there anything you cannot stand in a man? JBR: I cannot stand manipulative men. Oh, and liars. I can’t stand them. TNM: Are you single at the moment? JBR: I will not answer that (laughs) fb.me/TNM.Magazine | softrock.com.np

TNM: Do you have plans of getting back into movies?

“Jharana Bajracharya Rashid serves as a prime example of a strong independent woman, which is a rarity in a majority of our society.”

JBR: I think I’ll do videos, but I’m not sure if I can manage the time for doing movies because I have so many things going on. But, I won’t rule out the option. TNM: Till date, which do you think is your best work? JBR: It’s an upcoming movie called ‘Safe Landing’ where I play a corrupt cop. I had so much fun doing the movie and I’m sure people will like what I’ve done with the character. TNM: Are you just promoting your movie? JBR: Haha no, seriously! It’s really interesting and really different. (With a wide grin across her face) Jharana Bajracharya Rashid serves as a prime example of a strong independent woman, which is a rarity in a majority of our society. The fact that she dared to venture out on her own, take risks and learn from her mistakes to become a better person encompasses the essence of life itself. That’s why we’ve been crushing on her… and being smoking hot is an added benefit. For those hopefuls who died a little inside after seeing ‘Rashid’ behind Jharana’s name, get yourselves together. Rashid is her father’s surname she proudly carries. So, if you have hopes of wooing this sultry beauty, bring you’re A-game because she is anything but an easy catch.

CLASSIC WHISKEY GLASS Since taste development is not a concern, selection can be a classic standard glass or any good quality glassware or individual preference.

A GLENCAIRN GLASS The wider bottom will give space to open up the whiskey, the concentration and the aromas will be directed to the narrower rim.

Put 30ml of whiskey in both the glasses. Give it a swirl, put your nose to the rim and take in the aroma. The glencairn glass shows more aroma qualitatively and quantatively compared to the classic.

Water or ice can be added to make for a great chilled drink. Sodas can be added to add a flavor to the whiskey. (But it will kill the purity of the whiskey while still making an enjoyable drink.)

Only add 30% of water corresponding to the amount of whiskey added to the glass. The water opens the flavors in this concentrated form.

Whiskey cannot be fully appreciated neat. Water acts as a catalyst to open up the flavors and aromas rise like the smell of rain on dry ground. The burny sensation on the neat whiskey devoids full appreciation of flavors. softrock.com.np | fb.me/TNM.Magazine

bar hopping

Our recommendations on some of the best bars in town.

irish pub Moods Bar and Lounge A nod to the dark and rustic African themed interiors with dashes of Arabic dust. Moods lounge is noted for a grandiose in its settings and more importantly the sense of celebration it offers to its patrons. We loved its bronze walls, blue and red undertones in the lighting and an expansive seating area. Offering more than just a liquor bar experience, moods has a dedicated wine bar, a sheesha lounge and a cigar lounge. Bring along your wolfpack and they will cater your sheesha buff as drowning in single malt mates. The bar is well stocked with premium international and domestic liquor along with an explicit list of mocktails and cocktails, using only imported liquors as cocktail components. The bar food offering is a unique one too - there is a rotational theme that changes every 2-3 days. Fish and Chips when beer is on the flow and the day's special - a suave cheese platter to accord with the wine selection was impressive. The music can vary from soothing acoustics to heady club numbers. Not one of those peculiar places where you would find C-suite or I-banker types, expect a gathering of moods of people. Savvy outgoing teens, midlife party people to a suit guy here and there. By the fall of day, Moods turns out to be a concoction of people looking for suiting their drinking and chilling down needs for the day.

Irish Pub There’s nothing hip about this faux Irish pub tucked in the corner of Anand Bhawan, Lazimpat but for numerous times it has been described as Kathmandu’s best and the only authentic bar experience. The whole set of interior details are a marvel in itself, the pastiche of wood and green walls reeks of Ireland and head starts you for the ultimate pub time. The dimly lit interiors along with a vibrant bar selection is bound to produce excitement in any bar afficianodo. Irish pub boasts of an imported liquor selection unlike any other joint in town. The profusion of range starts from a dozen of beer selections to a good selection of Irish whiskies and possibly everything in between. The bar food to go with the drinks adds up notches to this place. There is a well thought offering of exotic Irish dishes cooked with Guiness beer and Irish whiskeys such as peppered celt with Guiness. Given the location of the bar in the expat neighborhood of nearby embassies, these international folks can be seen crinckling a glass or two in the evenings.Walls dotted with dartboards and tv screens, sport telecasts are on,this induces the guy thing in the atmosphere - sports and a good mug of beer. Reasoning the offering of selection, the imported liquors are pricey,so is the food - but all that is no bargain for exotic produces. To define it simply - this is your no frills bar where you can drop in alone and sway away with light music, good liquor and maybe talk to that lonely lady sipping her drink two seats away.

moods Zouk Bar and Lounge Somewhat frayed in the heritage high street premises of Babbarmahal Revisited - Zouk speaks something which says great evenings come in small packages. On show is a well lit lighting falling over the cream people of the town gathering to roll their dices. The bar gives you a feel of sitting by a greek santorini island bar vibes with lots of whites, muted mixtures and glass splashed in the decor. The charm of Babarmahal comes complimentary. All the bustle by the night falls,Zouk is about beautiful people and beautiful ambiance that is created along with the bar offerings are a medley of imported and domestic liquors. The pricing of all the liquor that is on offer qualifies it for one of the most reasonable bar menus in town. Adding to the goodness, they dont charge you for soda additions to your drinks. The bar experience becomes hassle free and you can pay better attention to your drink. The food offering is basic but sticks to typical Nepali snacks which is well to go because you have so much else to look forward to,the thumping music, sartorial eye candy around and another puff of sheesha. While it might not seem like it on the face of it, the real action takes place several hours after. Come nightfall, a trickle of well-heeled patrons make their way on to the dance deck, shedding Italian ties and French scarves, and calling for another round of a flaming shot.

Stretch Anywhere Anytime One of the most profound figures in Nepal Body building. Sachit Pradhan, has over 20 years of training experience, has taken part in several competitions and has won several titles as well. Overall champion of Mr. Himalaya twice and 3 times winner of South Asian Bodybuilding competition, he has been coaching for the past 14 years and has carved a new dimension to working out smartly.

Stretching is so often something people neglect to do at the end of a training session because they are too tired to do anything else. Or when they do, they just rush through each stretch and thus don’t get the full benefit of each one. You may think that stretching your hamstrings and calves is just something to be done if you have a few extra minutes before or after running or other exercises. Although studies about the benefits of stretching are mixed, stretching may help you improve your flexibility, which in turn may improve your athletic performance and decrease your risk of injury. If we might just add, stretching is important for the following reasons: 1. It improves muscle balance around a joint, thus improving posture. 2. It reduces the chance of injury when playing a sport or in everyday activities. 3. It increases the blood and nutrient supply to muscles and cartilage, thereby also reducing muscle soreness after training.

COBWEB

When you’ve been rocking and rolling for over two decades, you’ve got the right to brag. Words: Yonten Yonjan

One of the veteran bands of Nepali Rock, Cobweb have crossed two decades and the band is recording a new album showing no signs of slowing down. Aanjan in the scene when they initially started, they removed all the cobwebs from their rolling strings. Soon after it was the ride in the Mercedes Benz that band won a permanent place in the hearts of people. Since then the band has come out with amazing songs. We owe much of the popularity of the rock music today to Cobweb, without whom the industry may never have taken any momentum. We got a chance to drop in on their performance at Reggae Bar and chat with the veterans of Nepali Rock.

and 80’s. We were really inspired by them. TNM: In the current Nepali music scene, who is your favorite band?

TNM: How has the music scene changed from back when you were playing music and now? CW: The main thing is there was no internet, media and proper gadgets back then. As a matter of fact, the music scene had a different charm and quality in it. Everyone, from the musicians to the fans, were passionate about the music that was being made. Because marketing through different media was rare, musicians themselves promoted their concert pasting pamphlets around town and the people were excited months before a concert. It felt like the music scene was more alive. Yes, there are extremely talented artists and musicians, and there is better technology, the charm is missing.

album we like best. The truth is we like all our albums till date, every song every album was a learning process. TNM: Which one do you prefer: performances and recordings?

live

CW: Live performances and recording s are like Dashin and Tihar so we like both of it. Recordings have their own beauty. You play, listen to your music, judge it and correct the mistakes you make. Basically you judge your music and you play. Though recordings are a very complex task, the funny thing is the song which comes out the best while recording is what you play for live performances.

CW: Back then we use to go watch Prism, Vampires and Crisscross. The current music scene has clicked well and there are new musicians and bands. These talented artists have contributed a lot to the music industry. In the current scene, Underside has proved to be a promising band, catching the attention of all despite their hardcore nature. We simply love their music. TNM: Who is the funny guy of the band? CW: Divesh is the funny guy of the band, the reason being he doesn’t speak at all. (laughs). Moreover, everyone in the band is funny, and everyone has a funny nickname Divesh is Hakku, Siddhartha -Jonny Handsome and Nilesh is Khukre TNM: Who is the ladies man? Nilesh: Divesh,no doubt about it (laughs) TNM: What would you do if you were not in Cobweb?

CW: Nilesh Joshi plays the bass, Divesh Mulmi is on guitar and vocals and Siddartha Dhakhwa plays the drums.

Live performances, on the other hand, are magical. You feed the crowd with energy through your music and in turn, the crowd’s liveliness and spirit replenishes our energy and vice-versa until the concert is over. It’s basically a make it or break it situation as you have no retakes.

TNM: How would you describe your genre of music? Has it changed from what it used to be?

TNM: When and where was your first stage performance?

Nilesh: I would be a business man.

CW: We started from metal but we love to call ourselves a rock & roll band. We often play or cover genres such as heavy metal, reggae, progressive rock and many others. The reason we cover other genres is because we believe in entertaining our fans and supporters. We enjoy playing music and let the crowd enjoy more at the same time

CW: Our first live performance was in Patan, Ikkha chyaa where we performed songs from our album Anjaan.

TNM: Which is your best album yet?

TNM: Who are your influences?

CW: Anjaan, Cobweb, Rollin’ String, Mercedes Benz, Rock n Roll, Swing and Namaste are the albums we have come up with. It’s really difficult for us to pin down an

CW: Our influences come from the rock & roll bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Guns and Roses, AC/DC, Rolling Stones and the music from the 70’s

TNM: Tell us about your band members and their roles in the band.

TNM: When and where was your first tour? Our first tour within the country was in Pokhara, and our first international tour was in Hong Kong.

Siddhartha: I was studying engineering so I’d probably have followed the same line. Divesh: I’d have become a scientist for sure, haha.

TNM: From where do you get the inspiration to write your song? CW: It’s all about experimenting and exploring. We would want our fans and supporters to write us lyrics as well. Please feel free to send your lyrics to us.(To our Facebook Page) TNM: Where do you see the band in the future?

softrock.com.np | fb.me/TNM.Magazine

CW: We will be there to support the music industry. Currently we are working on our new album, we have not decided a name for it but we have recorded about 3 songs for the album.

or face arrest; different hospitals were separated for the whites and blacks and so were several other services like bus-stops and cinema halls, all extensively inferior to those accessed by the whites. Furthermore, any political party that the government felt was dangerous to their cause was banned and labeled communist. Residential areas were segregated and more than 3.5 million blacks were forcefully removed from their homes. It took nearly a quarter of a century, and the efforts of the entire world and their individuals to abolish apartheid. However, there are a few individuals who dedicated their lives to the struggle, and TNM pays tribute to one such icon of leadership and humility: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Born as the son of a chief, Rolihlahla Mandela grew up herding sheep and cattle in 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtatu, then a part of South Africa’s Cape Province. Being the son of a chief, Mandela received the best education available to black people and it was his teacher, Miss Mtingone, who called him Nelson. Nelson Mandela was not born with the hunger to be free, he was born free. It wasn’t until his early 20’s when he went to Johannesburg to pursue his education in law that he finally realized the severity of the injustice that was being suffered by the blacks. Already taking part in student protests in high school, Nelson was involved in the African National Congress where his involvement would increase at an extensive rate.

NELSON MANDELA Ending Apartheid

One of the most influential men to ever walk the earth, Nelson Mandela is an inspiration to the best definition of the word. he apartheid was a dark time in the history of the world where a person’s legal status, political rights, economic opportunities and social position depended solely on the color of his skin. The National Party governments, who were the ruling parties governing South Africa from 1948-1994 began the said segregation, with the notion of “ensuring the safety of the white people”, preferred the blacks to be with the blacks and the whites to be with the whites. The blacks were enforced by law to carry around their “book of passes” specifying racial groups

and its allies - the South African Indian Congress, the South African Congress of Democrats and the Colored People’s Congress. It is characterized by its opening demand; “The People Shall Govern!” Nelson Mandela played a major role in penning down this statement to give all South Africans equal rights. However, in 1956, Mandela along with other major people associated with the Freedom Charter was charged with high treason. The trial was targeted to keep the opposing organizations and parties from posing a threat, and was dragged on for four and a half years. It would take another 40 years of struggle to finally put the Freedom Charter to action. Peaceful protests came to a grinding halt and clear battle lines were drawn after the Sharpville Massacre of 1960. On the 21st of March 1960, up to 20000 people converged on a local police station to hand themselves in for not carrying their pass books. The peaceful nature of the process was shattered, however, when police started opening fire. A total of 69 people died that day including 8 women and 10 children. The Nationalist government imposed Matial law and thousands were jailed. When it became clear that all means of peaceful negotiation were exhausted, Nelson Mandela went underground to lead the armed struggle. Mandela was beginning to be recognized as the Black Pimpernel for his ability to avoid the police, using several disguises, a favorite of which was a chauffeur. After continuous efforts from the police, Nelson Mandela was finally arrested in 1962 and charged for leaving the country illegally and sentenced to 5 years in jail. Shortly thereafter, high ranking ANC officials were also captured and charged with high treason. Nelson Mandela was also tied up with the captured officials and sentenced to life imprisonment. For the next 27 years, Nelson Mandela found himself in Robben Island Prison as prisoner number 46664. However,

Would you start up a cold engine, shift to gear and rev off ? God no! You’ve got to let the engine run for a while; heat it up, let the oil flow and get the pistons lubricated before riding off. Neglect to do so and you’ll be the only one smiling by the end of the ride and your vehicle will be one unhappy camper. Now, If only men understood women as well as they understood their cars and motorbikes. You can’t rush into sex without revving up her engine first because, let’s admit it, you’re practically always raring to go. So we cannot emphasize enough on the importance of foreplay… and a quick tip: it starts way before you get under the sheets. It’s a day long process (at least) Foreplay doesn’t start from the bedroom, try and get her in the mood throughout the day. Plant a five-second-Frencher before you leave for the office in the morning. Send her dirty texts throughout the day about what you plan to do to her at night. Make dinner special as well, some foods are considered aphrodisiacs (list of foods*).

Foreplay The calm before the storm

Whether you’re baking cookies or having sex, it is always a good idea to pre-heat the oven. On to the Bedroom We know you must be more eager than a puppy in chains to pounce on her but sometimes it’s a good idea to take things slow. If she has gone through the trouble of putting on a naughty see through teddy for you, the least you can do acknowledge her efforts; she will appreciate it. And when they are finally off, you will be duly rewarded. Foreplay is all about being creative, as John Mayer aptly put it: her body IS a wonderland. John Mayer has been lucky with the ladies; ask any one of them after they stop screaming his name. Now coming back to the point, foreplay should involve the whole body, not just the target

The Neck and Collar bone: The neck and collar bones are highly erogenous zones; you can kiss, nibble or suck on them. If things have started heating up, try getting hold of her hair and tilting her head back and working on her neck. You can’t be too gentle here but don’t break her neck either. Breasts: The breasts are extremely sensitive for some women, so refrain from too much roughhousing (unless she likes it of course). Work your way in circular motions zeroing in on the nipples… take it slow. Remember that the nipples are extremely sensitive, especially the area of the areola above the nipple between the 10’0clock and 2 o’clock area.

Thighs: The inner thighs are a great spot to kiss before ringing the jingle bells. The thighs are really close to paradise city, so try and create a sense of anticipation for her by interacting with this body part before going on to the hoohah (vagina).

Hoohah: Before you jump on to the clitoris (it’s the thing above the vagina that feels like a mouse wheel) you can get her really excited by placing your fingertips about an inch above her clitoris on her pubic mound. Simply use your index and middle fingers and push gently into this fleshy mound with the pads of your fingertips. Now make small, circular

zones men affix themselves on to right from the get go. There are many erogenous zones that men tend to completely overlook. This does not mean that the sex isn’t good; but knowing these pleasure mines could make the experience a whole lot better for you and her, especially when you have been together for a longer period of time. Here are a few pointers on places you can touch (kiss, bite… spank?) her to make her go crazy. Remember: finding out what floats your partner’s boat is half the fun! Start from the top and hit every branch on your way down:

The Head and Face: Run your fingers through her hair and gently massage her scalp while you slowly kiss her. That ought to get her engine rolling. Limit the drool and tongue action though.

Shoulders and arms: These are often neglected areas, but if you want to perform proper foreplay you want to hit as many spots of her body as possible. Kissing these areas is an option but you can also run your hands all over these areas while you passionately kiss her. Stomach &Back: It’s a good idea to use your hands all over these areas while you busy your lips in other areas like the lips or breasts. It is also a good idea to focus your attention on these areas individually. Kiss her stomach, bite it, run your tongue from her navel to the point where her breasts meet, or in the opposite direction. You can also turn her over onto her stomach and kiss her all over her back.

motions on this area keeping your fingertips in contact with her mound. You can now use your mouth to slowly zone in on her clitoris. The clitoris should be the last spot to his, so do not neglect the rest of the vaginal area. And you always have your finger to use. If it feels like you’re sticking your finger(s) into a jar of jam, she’s probably ready to go.

Scents, Sexual At tractions and its Science This is why your body spray was not delivering the flocking ladies desperate to ravage your bare ass.

I

It’s complicated! That is probably one of the simplest ways to describe sexual motivation and attraction in humans. It is unusual. For us humans there is love and then there is sex. Unlike other animals we are not pushed to engage in sexual acts by our internal innate drive. We have sex because we think it is pleasurable. Our sexual behavior is influenced by a couple of factors like our sexual orientation, pursuit of erotic pleasure, attraction to our partner, and to a certain extent, the culture in which we exist. When we

focus on attraction to our partners, there’s the visual and intellectual attraction, which are obvious but we tend to underplay the role of scents and smell in the attraction we feel towards another person. So if there are times when you find your self unable to explain why you find (mind you, not think) someone really hot, it probably has something to do with the compound called pheromones that the person is giving off. The adage that, “It is all in the chemistry”, may have a point after all!

So, what are pheromones? Pheromones are chemicals produced by glands that are in the armpits, genital and navel regions of our bodies. These chemicals are clear and odorless and find their way out of our bodies onto our skin through the sweat pores. So basically, when you sweat, you’re letting the world (especially the sex you are attracted to) know who you are and what you have to offer. So pheromones are not mood enhancers or confidence builders (though your confidence and arousal would probably skyrocket if you knew you had just the pheromones to turn them on ;)). They are sexual attractants not on the blatant ‘that-guy/ girl-smells-so-sexy’ kind of way but at an unconscious subliminal level. Inexplicably a person gets drawn to you. Creatures of God, from mice to moths to men all send out these chemical signals to entice mates. These don’t work in the straightforward Cupid’s-arrowtype of way. There are a suite of chemicals that our bodies emit which can subliminally sway potential partnerings. How do pheromones make a sexual response happen in other people (of the opposite/same sex)? First of all the glands in our armpits, genital and navel areas produce the pheromones, which are sent out of our bodies via sweat. This is dispersed to the air all around aided and abetted by the body hair in the pubic, armpit and facial regions.

These compounds now reach the noses of those around you. Remember, the sweat begins to stink only when it mixes with bacteria. So if you keep yourself clean then your body odor will not be a turn off and your pheromones can work their magic! Anyways, once your pheromones hit the olfactory system (nerves in the nose to hypothalamus) of the other person it does a total bypass of the rational brain signals and heads straight for the emotional center of their brain called the hypothalamus. Your signals in the form of pheromones make a direct impression on the behavior center of the other person’s brain (male/ female). If this information you communicate to the other person says that you are healthy, fit and fertile, then you are in. That is a positive thing and a sexual response comes your way in form of flirtations, provocative eye contact, a move in your direction ….. you get the point. That is the chemistry between two people. Though we have to keep in mind that just because you have an amazing physical chemistry it does not necessarily mean that sex will be great or that you will fall in love. Neither is it a sure thing that your love/lust will last. You have to work on that! Practice makes perfect and you will constantly have to excite each other and be on top of the game. Also, to a then your from What

human survival and health is that, the immune system of the offspring will be more robust. So you sire stronger children ensuring the continuation of your genealogical line. Here’s something that may initially sound counter productive, if not weird. If you want to get the ball rolling with a woman for whom you have been having the hots, take her to visit a female friend/relative who is currently lactating (i.e. still breast feeds her baby) or has a breastfed baby. She will definitely feel an increase in her sexual motivation and desires. Stick around and you are bound to get lucky!! Pheromones don’t just work on opposite sex stimulations and sexual attraction. There are some pheromones that stimulate others of the same

sex to unconsciously want to be in a similar situation as theirs. To get back to the earlier example, a breastfeeding mom releases pheromones that trigger the motherly instinct in other women, who feel more inclined towards sex because that is the way they get to be moms. Here’s another piece of trivia which can be used totally to your advantage, a woman will be most sensitive to your pheromones when she is at her most fertile. So, when you are getting close to someone there is no harm in figuring out her monthly cycle. The more you know the higher your chances of getting lucky. Pheromones have been used in perfumes/fragrances to supplement the pheromones

of the wearer and to attract women and men. Many companies and fragrances claim to help the wearer enhance their sexual appeal to the opposite sex (like The Axe Effect). The reality is that each person has a unique pheromone combination, which is like a fingerprint, one of a kind. So even though products claim to enhance your desirability, it would seem straightforward that in order for a person to be attracted to you they need to be attracted to your pheromones. Like I mentioned earlier, pheromones are important in sexual attraction but they are not the begin-all and end-all for sex. Relationships, whichever kind, need constant nurturing, experimenting and respect. Enjoy!

how to make

friends at work

Words: Saurav Nepal

you spend a lot of time at work, so it’s very necessary you become good friends with your co-workers. It might seem like a complex task but making friends at work can be a lot easier than you think. Connecting to people is important if you want to create a positive impression. Your office will be a lonelier place if you don’t have friends at work. There are a lot of benefits of having good friends at work. Having a solid work-place friendship can make you feel more satisfied and attached with your job, so making friends has more benefits than just the social quotient. Office friends will watch you throughout your professional career and healthy workplace friendships will be converted to life-long relationships if you strike the right chord. In the Harvard Business Review blog “We All Need Friends At Work,” the

author Christine M. Riordan points that office friendships can act as an antidote to dissatisfaction and disengagement at work and she also says “the good old-fashioned friendships created when we chit-chat, hang out, joke, and have fun with coworkers” can have deep and far-ranging benefits in the workplace. However, the main trouble with office friendships is that it’s hard to make the leap from office colleague to a friend. If you are someone who is having difficulty making friends at work, here are some ways on how to break the ice and make good friends. Try to implement these sensible ideas because everyone wants to be friends with the one who has the vital connections and important contacts. Best of luck to you!

Be Yourself: If you want to make new friends in the workplace, just be yourself. You will bond quickly with your co-workers if

you are open and honest. Let your coworkers see the real you; your strengths and your weaknesses. Introduce yourself formally to the group. Start with some basic information about yourself, your past job, your achievements, reasons of joining the company, your life and ask them about their lives as well. Rather than lamenting about anything, build better bonds with the people you share office space with.

Give compliments: Be courteous and give compliments to your co-workers. A simple ‘Hello/Thankyou’ will come in handy when making new friends. You should be humorous at times. Don’t poke fun at other people, even if it is a humorous joke. Generosity helps to create bonding. Stop and chat with your bosses because bosses actually like to see that employees are adapted to the office culture. Being courteous will help you in striking the right impression. If an employee is gracious and courteous fb.me/TNM.Magazine | softrock.com.np

Stop and chat with your bosses because bosses actually like to see that employees are adapted to the office culture. then, it shows he/she wants to be an integral part of the organization.

Build relationships outside the office:

Be Balanced:

Part of being a team should also help you to socialize well with your co-workers. Socializing is not just limited to lunch breaks and coffee breaks but connecting yourself at personal level is extremely powerful. Co-workers will have respect for you if you bond with them outside the company as well but you will have to create an ideal environment. Introduce yourself to after-office parties, sporting event, invite each other’s families for a get together and casual trips. Establishing good friendship outside your workplace will get you easily accepted in the circle.

The most-effective way to make friends is to stay out of office politics. No matter what drama and issues always exists in the workplace. Don’t be shy, weird, grumpy or weird. Gossiping and back-biting will make you lose potential friends. Not everyone has a same point of view, so you should act in a professional manner.

The most-effective way to make friends is to stay out of office politics. No matter what drama and issues always exists in the workplace.

Ask someone to join you for a lunch or help you in work. You should develop the capability to act in advance to deal with an expected difficulty.

Be Fair to All Your Co-workers:

Be communicative and productive:

Don’t be biased towards anyone regardless of the hierarchy or the nature of the work. Never shy away from asking or offering to help for a personal favour (moving, construction, advice, etc.). It takes time to building friendships at work. Similarly, it also takes an equal time to build trust, so be fair to all your coworkers. If you can truly give without expectations to another colleague, it shows you care about them instead of yourself. Don’t ever expect anything in return. This will deepen your friendship so that it can last beyond the workplace as well.

Communication and productivity will help you socialize well with your co-workers. No one wants a lazy co-worker. Interacting with co-workers is extremely important in today’s workplace. Not only does it will build trust and allow you to bond with your co-workers but it also enhance your career and progress. If you have any differences and problems then, sit down with your friends and colleagues and discuss everything. This is very essential in knowing each other and being good buddies. After all your work place is your second home and you have to trust and know each other well in order to work together.

Be a Team-Player: Workplace relationship starts inside the team. A good fit is necessary for an individual to achieve the group goal because companies group employees together according to skills and competencies. Give time to your co-workers because you cannot expect them to find you likeable at first. You should make yourself available and easy to approach. Always stick by deadlines and be accountable to the standards.

Be proactive: If you want to make new friends, you need to be proactive. Ask someone to join you for a lunch or help you in work. You should develop the capability to act in advance to deal with an expected difficulty. Try to find some common points between your conversations and remember to listen to your colleagues effectively. Have patience and a friendly smile. August 2013

andy murray

the knight of wimbledon Words: Saurav Nepal Andy Murray has become the first Briton in 77 years to win the Wimbledon men’s single titles. The Scotsman defeated world number one Novak Djokovic on Centre Court in a match that lasted about three hours and 10 minutes with a straightsets victory of 6-4, 7-5 and 6-4. Thousands of people descended on the famous Centre Court to witness this historic triumph, including Prime Minister David Cameron, Scotland First Minister Alex Salmond, Victoria Beckham and Wayne Rooney, while millions tuned in to watch the action on television worldwide. This victory is Murray’s second grand slam win, after his breakthrough triumph at the US Open last year. Born in Dunblane, Scotland, on May 15, 1987, to Judy and William Murray, Andrew Barron Murray grew up there and attended the Dunblane primary school. He witnessed the horrible Dunblane tragedy at the age of eight when the killer Thomas Hamilton barged into his school facility, and shot and killed 17 people -16 students and one teacher- before shooting himself. Andy survived by hiding in the headmaster’s office. His parents separated when he was nine, and he and his brother Jamie went to live with their father

Will. The sibling rivalry was no secret because at that time, Jamie was rated the second-best junior player in the world and beating him became Murray’s only ambition. The junior coach Leon Smith who spotted Murray described him as ‘highly competitive’ even at the age of five. However, junior Murray had nearly abandoned tennis for a career in football when the famous Rangers Football Club tried to sign him at the age of 13. But, instead he headed to Barcelona to train on the Spanish clay courts of the Sanchez-Casal Academy. Murray would have never gone to Barcelona had he not met Rafael Nadal at the European U-16 Team Championships in Andorra. Nadal told Murray about his life in Spain, where he trained in the sun for four-and-a-half hours a day under the supervision of Carlos Moya, one of the world’s top players. On the other hand, Murray used to play for just four-and-a-half hours a week. This baffled him, so his mother was forced to take him to the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Spain where he was trained by Emilio Sanchez, former world no.1 doubles player. Having practiced tennis since he was an elementary student, Andy Murray entered his first tournament at the age of 12, and won. In a turn of events, Murray was diagnosed with a bipartite patella at the age of 16. It is a condition where the kneecap remains as two separate bones instead of fusing together .This caused him to repeatedly pull out of events. However, his incredible strength and determination paired with a keen appetite to win stared paving his success. Five years later, he won the US Open junior title. Later that year, he was named as BBC’s 2004 “Young Sports Personality of the Year.” In 2005, Murray even became the youngest player to compete in the Davis Cup. After turning pro in 2005, Andy won his first ATP title, the SAP open in San Jose, a year later. Two years later, he reached his first Grand Slam final, in the 2008 US Open but lost to Roger Federer. That was an era dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and later, Novak Djokovic. Having lost in three subsequent grand slam final appearances, he finally became the US Open Champion in 2012. This was followed by an illustrious Gold Medal victory during the London 2012 Olympics at Wimbledon. Some lesser known facts about him are that he loves his PlayStation and Terrier dogs. Since 2007, he has been romantically involved with Kim Sears. They can be seen together in every match. Likewise, Big Andy is also involved with a lot of charitable works including Rally for Relief Events and Rally Against Cancer events to name a few. Currently on 28 career titles and over 2 million twitter followers, Andy Murray is Great Britain’s most successful tennis player. He will also be recommended for a knighthood for ending Britain’s 77-year wait for Wimbledon men’s single titles. With Roger Federer getting old and Rafael Nadal being restricted to few matches due to injury, it’s time this Briton soars high.
