It is difficult to put into words how much we appreciate the response we received for the first issue of TNM. We would like to keep it short and sum it up in two words: endless gratitude. We hope that the first issue of TNM fit your fancy and that everyone enjoyed flipping through it as much as we did creating it. And we were just warming up. With the splendid reactions to the inaugurating issue of The Nepali Man, we were even more motivated than when we kicked off. To live up the standards set by the first issue, we bring to you one of the pioneering bands of the modern Nepali Rock scene, 1974 AD. Almost 20 years into the music industry, the members of the band share their experience not only as musicians but as business men and entrepreneurs. In other news, the downpours must have plucked a thorn with all the road users trying to maneuver around the muddy city. And everyone knows who to blame (*wink **wink* *nudge* *nudge*). Now since some people aren’t doing their jobs right, we have other issues too: Nepal Bandhs. Check our suggestions on what to do on such days to make it seem a little less miserable. To brighten up the situation, summer is right around the corner. If you’re in a hurry to speed up the shedding of the winter flab, the fitness section might help you along. Learn to fight fat with food and show off those six packs. Or four at least. Keeping with the weather, the fashion section features some spring summer fashion updates and recommendations. This issue also dives into one of the most sensitive issues for men: balding where we have given some suggestions and busted a few myths. Slow down the hands of time and try to keep a full set of hair on your head. On a more serious note though, the world lost one of the biggest names in the world of bodybuilding, the man behind the terminator and the world of bodybuilding as we know it. TNM brings to you the icon Joe Weilder who breathed his last at the age of 93. An aspiring new name in the business world, TNM caught up with the founder of one of the most popular lounges in the city Karma Gurung. Treading into more uncommon career paths, Ahmed Dulla Nepali is a man to keep an eye on. We welcome you to the New Year 2070 and wish that the year ahead brings you the best of everything to come. We hope you find this issue as good as the first one, because we’re just getting started.

I just hope that the fates of our roads are not the same. Although jumping to conclusions might not be necessary just yet, one can’t help but assume the worse consequences. After all, it’s not like our government has many past records to reassure us of their efficient work. Also, the dust in our eyes and the sand in our mouths have plagued us for too long. It has become increasingly difficult to get across the city without reaching for your helmet visor, rolling up your windows or covering up your face. And the gruesome ordeal that most of us have to go through is a whole different story. Uncharacteristically, the government of Nepal made quick work of ripping apart the city roads which was a pleasant change from the lethargic pace they seem to work at. The roads were being ripped apart faster than the clothes off of a newly married couple on their first wedding night. Jokes apart, many people sadly lost part or even all of their homes and shops in the process. Losing half of your living room will definitely ruin one’s day, but surprisingly not much of a ruckus was stirred up. Basically, the slate had been partially been wiped clean for a new beginning. However, what we have in our hand now is a city that resembles an aftermath of war. Half demolished homes, piles of debris running alongside the tarmacs and blocked roads and detours have created a considerable amount of nuisance. Let’s not forget the massive excavators on the roads, lumbering around like drunken

elephants on a rampage. It seems that the government has exhausted itself in the process of breaking apart the roads and is now incapable of keeping up with the pace they set for themselves. Naturally, people have questioned the way the things had been carried out. First and foremost, would it not have been a better idea to destroy and finish reconstructing one segment of the road and then move on to another part of the city? Also, now that we have a new person in charge, will he be as “diligent” in the construction of the roads, or are we now bound to off road trails smack dab in the middle of the city? And what exactly is the cause of all the delay? A reasoning that has come to notice is because the telephone and electricity poles are not being taken down on time. Since Santa Claus’ line of authority ends at the North Pole, I guess we have the government to blame for the delay here as well. Many holdups in traffic can be attributed to this delay itself. Rush hour traffic, narrowed roads due to debris on the sides and senseless drivers now make up a concoction for hell on tarmac. Furthermore, the number of accidents has also understandably increased. Yet, things are still going at snail’s pace. And the frequent change in government control has not helped in the slightest to consolidate the worries of the people. Judging by the looks of things, the completion of the roads will still take some time. However, the roads that have been completed are a treat to the riders and drivers; exhibit A: The Baluwatar strip. The general public would greatly appreciate it if the whole process could be sped up a few notches and we could put an end to picking parts of the city out of our hair every time we get home. Is it just me, or are my eyes and skin itchier than it used to be?

15 THINGS TO DO ON A

NEPAL BANDH Let’s make the most out or us Nepalese citizens, bandhs or strikes have become an inevitable part of our life. It is now practically a part of our culture and we tend to have more bandhs than public holidays. Let’s not really dwell on the downsides of public strikes, as there are far too many and it’s frequently talked about too. Now, since there is very little that we individually can do to call off a bandh, how about not letting a day of strike go astray and doing something interactive for ourselves? Well, if you still insist in taking on the rowdy protest activists and opening up the roads, we fear that this content might not really be the best of your interests. But we do commend your noble thoughts. Nevertheless, a friendly word of caution, as you might want to refer to this list So, on a light note, here are 15 things that we think you could do to get through a Nepal Bandha:

1. CYCLE

Stretch your muscles, grab a bottle of Glucose, throw on a sun cap (more preferably a helmet) and go cycling. Not only is it a good form of exercise, bandhs are one of the few days when the roads are safe and clear of idiots on bigger set of wheels. Just be weary of ambulances or security vehicles that will occasionally come flying out of nowhere. Or cycle around the valley and discover some amazing trails.

2. OFF-ROADING

If you are energetic enough to wake up at the wee hours of the morning, you could indulge in some off-road activities outside of the city with your motorcycle or a capable 4X4 SUV. A good off road patch to cook up a crazy adventure is never too far away from the city. But make sure that you time yourself well enough to leave before the bandh activities starts and return when things simmer down.

3. FAMILY TIME

In case of a confirmed strike, take your family to a nice resort out of the valley the night before and enjoy some quality family time. There won’t be many better chances to spend time with your family, especially if you are one of those who are swamped with work every day of the week. Make the best of the bandh.

If you don’t have plans to head anywhere, gather friends/family and catch up over a few pegs or bottles of your favourite drink with a barbeque

12

There won’t be many better chances to spend time with your family, especially if you are one of those who are swamped with work every day of the week. or momo party to boot. There really is nothing more filling than munching on a well done pork barbeque and drinking up without any worries. Plan things prior to the last minute and you have a whole day to unwind. Just make sure you aren’t seen on the news, dead drunk and making a fool of yourself in the open streets.

5. GAMBLE

Yeah, gambling is illegal, immoral and blah blah. But what else can you do on a bandh? Hours will easily go by flying when you play cards or LangurBurja. Of course, if you are into it that is. Or you could even place bets over a session of your favourite video games or a live sports event going on somewhere. But don’t end up burning a huge hole in your pocket or end up putting your house at stake.

6. MOVIE MARATHON

All of us definitely have quite a few movies that we have always wanted to watch, but never could find the time to do so. So dig up your hard drive, DVD’s or get the torrent running, grab some food and sit down for a movie marathon.

7. PET TIME

You may be the worst living person in the face of the earth, but your pet will always think you are the greatest one in the world. So clean up your pet, pamper him/her and take time out to play together.

8. DIG UP MEMORIES

Take out the old family album and look through the old photographs. A little nostalgia easily gives you that good feeling inside. And you get to poke fun at your dad’s bell bottom pants and walrus-stache or tease the naked cousin.

9. GET READING

4. CATCH UP

April/May 2013

of the forced holiday

Get back to the good old habit of reading or give it a try if you have never read a novel before. Reading books can be highly inspirational and be a time truly well spent.

10. GAME TIME

Dust off your gaming console and grab hold of the controller. There is no better to sit back and kick around with the Messi and the rest of the squad or imagine yourself as a highly skilled marksman.

11. BE THE CHEF

Scourge the internet for some delicious recipes and try cooking up something nice for your wife, girlfriend, family or friends. If you’re not the greatest cook or have hardly hung around the kitchen, make sure you have something ready-toeat to be served as a backup.

12. CLEAN UP

Take a close look at your vehicle. Notice the dirt? So give your vehicle a nice wash, get that coat of muck out, and polish up both the exteriors and the interiors. Or clean up and organize your room. And have you ever tried washing your shoes? Scrub off all the filth, dry it in the sun and experience the awesome feeling of putting on a clean pair of white sneakers.

13. JOIN THE PROTEST

This is to be undertaken at your risk. Join the protesters and go about shouting jindabaad and murdabaad like a mad man. Just make sure that you are expressing the right statement with the right crowd. You may not be genuinely protesting anything at all, but what the heck! Take the chance to experience being a part of a protest. But give the sandals a skip and put on some running shoes for an efficient disappearing act when the cops come charging with the batons.

14. FACEBOOK

Not that we don’t spend time on FaceBook on a daily basis. But some of us still can’t get enough of FaceBook. So login, post random status updates, upload photos, share stuffs, stalk other people’s profile or indulge in whatever that you do. Time will just fly by!

15. GIVE A DAMN

Act like some wanna-be gangster and start walking in the middle of the road without a care in the world. If you can pull it off, dress up like a Don and have some of your friends walk beside you, acting like your accomplishes in crime. But don’t do that any other day; otherwise the doctors will have to pry you and your crew’s teeth off the tarmac.

IN NEPAL Words: Yonten Yonjan

Have you ever noticed the gleam in a gamer’s eye while opening a brand new game console and discovering the awaited, or the expression on the face of a gamer when playing the latest game? Gaming has become a part of our lives as, it is dear to the kids and an excuse for the grown ups to disconnect from the real world and connect themselves with the avatar of games. Gaming, whether it is on PCs, game consoles, mobiles or on other devices, has proved itself to be an integral part of life not only for gamers but for the general public as well, consequently creating a ‘Gaming Culture’. While it is true that the gaming culture is just beginning to ignite in Nepal, these recent years

are often the most cherished times in a gamer’s life. The rise in the number of gamers, gamestations and the rise in e-sports tournaments for prize money are definite signs of improvement. This exposure has brought positive vibes in the Nepalese gaming culture. Moreover, gaming has played a positive role in the lives of gamers by helping them drift to a safe heaven - The Gamers Paradise. It has proved itself to be a good source of entertainment than wasting time and money on alcohol, womanizing and engaging oneself in other deviant activities. These positive aspects have ignited hopes and dreams for our gaming culture to evolve into a side-profession from a source of entertainment in the distant future. Also, who wouldn’t want to earn something while playing video games? This would be the ultimate dream for a gamer. Nevertheless a reality check would come in handy to all the gamers. With electrical power-cuts for more than 14 hours a day, expensive game consoles (due to high import taxes on electronic goods), lack of investment/exposure and other disturbances in the gaming environment, it may be a long haul to expect too much from in the gaming scene. So maybe it would be a good idea to stick to pens and books before pounding the controls in hopes of becoming a professional gamer. But it never hurt to unwind and kick back with a little FIFA, does it?

The rise in the number of gamers, gamestations and the rise in e-sports tournaments for prize money are definite signs of improvement.

Gaming for me is life, a virtual life where I can become who ever I want, which is impossible in real life. Think about it, games are the only place where I can become a hybrid cross of Devil and Angel in ‘’Devil May Cry...’’ The joy of defeating Manchester City and me scoring with Rooney in ‘’Pro Evolution Soccer” is unparalleled. All the blood galore, killing demons, shooting guns, speeding at 350kmph,The Rock Bottom and finally scoring the winning goal all without leaving my bedroom and with just a press of a button is more than anyone could wish for.

I personally love video games because I can be anyone in the virtual world from Batman, Spiderman, and Hercules to Cristiano Ronaldo. I first played Prince of Persia, an imaginary quest of a prince to save his princess, which was one of the earliest video games to hit the market. Now the gaming scenario has changed, we can live, eat and do all humanly possible things in the virtual world. Games like GTA, The Sims, etc are some probable examples where we can do anything and I mean anything. These are some reasons I love videogames and have been addicted to it since I first took hold of the controller.

A round-up of the latest and greatest cameras in the market

Sony NEX-6

This is probably the most popular Mirrorless camera on the market, and notably for a good reason. All the NEX models are applauded for their price, portability and image quality. Plus, they have a broad selection of lenses, adapters for other lens mounts, unsurpassed image quality and a ton of settings - all packed in a pocketable product.

Fujifilm X-Pro 1

This camera squeezes professional performance into a compact form. It’s an object lesson in fusing style and technology. You can safely put down you bulky D-SLRs and pick this one up instead – without any compromises in IQ. This model packs a 16.3 megapixel sensor with a hefty bag of features and options.

Olympus OM-D E-M5

The Olympus OM-D is a really special camera with a huge selection of lenses and features that put even full-frame D-SLRs to shame, arguably one of the most likeable mirrorless yet. The retro design is immediately familiar to any D-SLR owners however, the OM-D is extremely configurable and can be made to work according to your likings.

WHY GO MIRRORLESS? Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras (MILCs or simply, Mirrorless Cameras) are a great way for amateur

NIKON D7100

D7100 is a fairly significant upgrade from its predecessor, the D7000. It has Nikon’s newest and unique 24MP APS-C sensor which lacks an OLPF (Optical LowPass Filter, the first in Nikon’s lineup. It also features a significant upgrade AF system and promises the autofocus algorithms from the D4 explaining the extended sensitivity range.

CANON 6D

CANON 100D

mode. The jarring number of features and functions is intimidating at first but once you get the hang of it, you

can make it do whatever you want. Also, these cameras offer the sharpest image quality in the consumer line.

The 6D fits snugly in with the rest of the Canon family. Squeezing a full-frame sensor in a body the size of 7D, the 6D produces nea rly identical results as the 5D Mark III – that is to say that you will not be disappointed. Video, however, is different story altogether and it is a complete let down. If you don’t care about the tacky video quality, the 6D is a great buy.

Canon 100D is billed as the ‘world’s smallest, lightest APS-C DSLR’ and rightfully so, merging the Rebel series in an attention grabbing and impressively light and small body with equally impressive image quality. Offering an 18MP sensor, DIGIC 5 processor is not so far from the ‘SLR-Style’ mirrorless cameras. What’s equally impressive is how much the 100D operates like any other comparable camera.

WHY A D-SLR? D-SLRs are currently the most popular form of camera and perhaps, the most complicated, unless you leave it in ‘Auto’

photographers to step up their game from a point and shoot offering a great compromise between features, image

quality, price, and most notably, size. Even prosumers love them for their portability without sacrificing features.

HTC One

Will this phone be HTC’s mark to domination?

In a crowded smartphone market, HTC is the underdog to titans like Samsung and Apple. The company needs to stand out (and it does) if it even wants the chance to prove itself to consumers. Simply called the One, HTC takes its design to the next level.

I

canon sony powershot s110 rx100 The Powershot S110 is the most refined Canon’s little pocket camera Canon has ever made. The core design of the S110 remains unchanged from previous iterations. But with a little streamlining and some key new features, it’s inched one step closer to perfection and it still surpasses its competitors in portability while offering decent image quality.

There is a lot to like about the camera. In low light, bright light, near, far, or anywhere in between, images look great. The camera’s powerful depth-offield strength gives images the stunning look that’s long been a DSLR exclusive. So, if you want the best images from a portable camera, RX100 is the one to get.

canon powershot g15 Kudos on this one, Canon. Where looks are concerned, the G15 goes the distance. Everything is well-proportioned and well-placed, with an understated, sleek, yet classic look to it. But it’s still not too comfortable in a pants pocket. The real limitation here is sensor size. 1/1.7 inches just cannot compete with the likes of the Sony RX100.

WHY point and shoots? In the past, this was the go-to camera category for the masses. Fast forward to today, most of them can’t compete with D-SLRs, nor have

they shrunk to the size of a camera phone. It begs a question why they’d want a compact camera. For the first time, with

these cameras above, with shallow depth of field and comparable low light performance, it provides reason for people to think small.

HTC has crafted the One out of a single block of anodized aluminum, sprinkled with polycarbonate accents throughout. It’s incredibly intricate. Add chamfered, polished edges that connect the sides of the phone to the glass (Gorilla Glass 2, to be specific) and you have a handset with one of the best industrial designs we’ve ever seen. The amount of detail here is staggering, and it reflects just how crucial this device is to HTC’s future. While industrial design, ergonomics and build quality are a good start, there’s much more to this skinny slab of aluminum. The front of the device is home to some of the biggest changes, headlined by a 4.7 inch S-LCD3 panel with 1080p resolution. Once you turn it on, the One gets even prettier and the sharpest ever seen and by far is the most gorgeous display out there with simply incredible quality. There’s plenty more going on underneath the shell: the One is powered by a 1.7 GHz quadcore Snapdragon 600, an Adreno 320 and 2 GB RAM. This much horsepower is an overkill until apps can take advantage of it. While everybody else was busy increasing the megapixel count of their cameras, HTC eschews a high megapixel count for larger pixels to provide a higher sensitivity to light. It is also the first android phone to feature optical image stabilization much like Nokia Lumia 920. However, the camera is a letdown mostly because of its low megapixel count combined with heavy noise reduction decrementing the overall sharpness no matter what the situation. The HTC One has top-notch hardware design (unlike, Galaxy S4) and specs that are comparable or better than anything else on the market today. The One is drop-dead gorgeous and for the first time rivals what we get out of, well, Apple. April/May 2013

when Facebook first launched, and some might not even actually be friends with you anymore. Your news feed is filled up with these same things that you tend to ignore, but your lock screen is the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning and the last thing before you go bed. Think about it.

Facebook Home Facebook’s newest strategy on owning the market by elegantly integrating into your Android phone

F

acebook recently introduced an array of new apps, a lock screen and launcher, for Android that overhauls your entire device, basically turning it into a Facebook phone. ‘Coverfeed’ overhauls the home screen and also the lock screen giving you updates on what your friends are up to without even unlocking the phone and you will be getting ads in all the same places. You can even like or comment posts from your home screen – everything feels incredibly native. The minimalist design makes it visually attractive and strays away from android’s design language (which is a good thing). Messaging is one of the key features of Facebook Home and this is probably one of the most well thought and integrated chat solution in Android ever. Zuckerberg made no bones in commenting that the way we currently message is broken. In Home, you will see a round icon with a face of whoever you are chatting with, called ‘Chat Heads’, over top of any apps you

are using. Tapping on your friend’s face opens up your chat window – you are going to spend a lot of time poking your friends in the face. The good thing here is it works with both SMS and Facebook messaging. Facebook Home looks good, really good, in fact too good but the real question is how your lock screen will look when it is actually a stream of oversaturated Instagram food photos, out-offocus baby pictures, memes and grainy duckfaced self-portraits. Installing Facebook Home converts your home screen and lock screen into whatever your friends are posting no matter how good, or downright terrible. When you unlock the device, this is the first thing you will see – the images from your newsfeed.

Since your friends will be producing the content, what Facebook Home displays cannot be held to the same standard as the undeniably beautiful user interface and minimalist approach. What if your girlfriend asks to borrow your phone and your lock screen is someone else’s cleavage, or your ex? And, don’t forget the ads – they will soon be coming directly to both your lock screen and home screen. Home is initially available on HTC One and One X, and the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Note II. It will be rolling out broadly in a while and can be installed from the Play Store.

‘What if our phones were designed around people, not apps?’ Zuckerberg had asked (Sound familiar? Windows Phone!), but what if you hate them? What if you haven’t seen some of those people in three years? Some of these friends you may have had since 2006

IS THIS THE FUTURE? A technology brought closer to your senses

O This isn’t just one of Google’s weird flights of fancy. The question is no longer ‘if’, but ‘when?’

18

April/May 2013

nly about two years ago, what seemed more of a science experiment is now starting to look like a real consumer product. A completely new kind of computing device; wearable; specifically designed to reduce distraction. Google Glasses is fashioned to defy the current notions on how we interact with technology, a pretty ambitious project. The design of Glass is actually really beautiful. Elegant, yet sophisticated. An apple-esque design. The system itself is made up of only a few basic pieces – the main body is a soft-

touch plastic that houses the brains, battery and counterweight. A thin metal strip creates the arc of the glasses with a set of typical pad arms and nose pads for device to rest in your face. Google is making the first version of the device in a variety of colors: gray, orange, black, white, and light blue. So yes, Glass looks beautiful, but would you wear it in public? That’s the real question. When you activate Glass, there’s supposed to be a small screen that floats in the upper right-hand of your field of vision. It should take a moment to adjust to this spectral screen in your vision, and it would especially odd the first time you see it. Here’s what you see: the time is displayed, with a small amount of text underneath that reads “ok glass.” That’s how you get Glass to wake up to your voice commands. Actually, it’s a two-step process. First you have to touch the side of the device (which is actually a touchpad), or tilt your head upward slowly, a gesture which tells Glass to wake up. Once you’ve done that, you start issuing commands by speaking “ok glass” first, or scroll through the options using your finger along the side of the device. You can scroll items by moving your finger backwards or forward along the strip; you select by tapping, and move “back” by swiping down. Most of the big interaction is done by voice, however. The device gets data through Wi-Fi on its own, or it can tether via Bluetooth to an Android device or iPhone and use its 3G or 4G data while out and about. There’s no cellular radio in Glass, but it does have a GPS chip. One of the most common and obvious problem: no data. A good data connection is obviously the key for the device to function properly, and when taking Glass outside for stroll, losing data or experiencing slow data on a phone puts the headset into a near-unusable state.

3.14 Smart Things About Pi 1

2

Pi didn’t earn its name until the 18th ventury, when Welsh mathematician William Jones started using its symbol (pi, the first letter in the Greek word for perimeter). In medieval Latin was known as quantitas, in quam cum multiplicetur diameter, proveniet circumferentia, or ‘the quantity which, when the diameter is multiplied by it, yields the circumference.’ Quite a mouthful. Not as easy as Pi.

The average sinuosity of a river (its length as the fish swims divided by its length as the crow flies) is pretty close to Pi. Why? Water on the outside of a bend erodes the bank, while slower-moving water on the inside of the curve deposits silt. Eventually the shape morphs into a loop – until an overflow cuts off the detour, straightening the curve. Rinse and repeat.

3 Pi contains everything. Pi is non-repeating and also thought to be ‘normal’ – that is, 0 through 9 seem to occur in equal proportion among its digits. If that’s true, any series of digits can be found somewhere in Pi; since it’s infinite, they’ll eventually show up by chance alone. Convert Lord of the Rings or the entire Simpsons euvre into a code and look at the raw numerals. They’ll appear in Pi, in that order, somewhere.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US Injustice: Gods Among Us isn’t just another fighting game. It’s the ultimate in fan service and an unmistakable labor of love looking to answer many of those questions that we ponder daily by taking 24 of the DC Universe’s most

infamous heroes and villains and pitting them against each other in a 2.5D fighter. This is the kind of game DC fans have been dreaming of seeing their heroes in for a long time. On top of the stellar gameplay and cornucopia of modes, there’s a treasure trove full of unlockables, amazing graphics, and superb audio, with a voice cast pulled from the annals of DC Animation’s greats—even if not all of them are in their traditional roles (i.e., Phil LaMarr as Aquaman). And the only knocks against this entire experience are minor. The load times are obnoxiously long and frequent between each battle, but even that can be forgiven when you see what you can do in the levels and how

smooth every single fight is once it starts. A few character move sets have shades of Mortal Kombat leak through like Batman/Scorpion, Raven/Ermac, and Killer Frost/Sub-Zero, but everyone else seems truly and wholly original. The only downside is the mirror match clones were more easily discernible as they look exactly the same as you do. However, you can’t stress enough on how polished the game is. This is one of the best all-around fighting experiences you’re likely to find—and fans of both DC Comics and Mortal Kombat-style fighters will be blown away by this high-quality brawler of epic proportions. 11 MOST EFFECTIVE

SUMMER ABS ROUTINES

2.

1.

Swiss ball Crunch

Swiss ball kickback

Focusing on your upper core, this classic move has withstood time and has been cited as one of the most important moves ever.

This lower core exercise will give you that thrill and rush you are looking for.

First: Lie your back on the Swissball.

First: Place your feet on the swiss ball. With your hands on the floor and focusing on your core make a straight line with your back.

Second: slowly come up (about 45 degrees) focusing on your core and keeping your chin up. Come back down slowly and repeat.

3.

Second: Pull the swiss ball towards your core. Make sure that you do not use the power of your legs but isolate the core to do the work. Slowly roll the swiss ball to the starting position.

4.

Swiss ball reverse crunch

Swiss ball hyper extension

Let’s switch places. Instead of doing a regular crunch let’s do a reverse crunch focusing on your lower core.

A great workout for the lower back.

First: With your hands on your side lie flat on your back. Put the swiss ball between your legs.

First: Lie flat on your stomach on the swiss ball. Make sure that your body back is in a straight line.

Second: Firmly placing your hands on the ground slowly raise the swiss ball up. Bring the swiss ball up until your lower back and buttock is lifted off the ground. Come back down to the starting position.

Second: Slowly come up (about 45 degrees) keeping you back in a straight line. Slowly come back down to the starting position. Make sure to keep your hands behind you and do not try to balance the swiss ball with your hand.

S

ix Pack, the ultimate dream and a point to distinguish you from all the rest. Trust me working your abs day in and day out is not the best thing to do if you are looking to get the all famed six pack. Rather, focus on working your abs alternately about three times a week and keep your reps to a max of 20 – 25 each set.

5.

6.

Swiss ball plank

Hanging Leg Raise

Another version of the normal plank where you not only have to hold your body in a straight line but balance yourself in the swiss ball as well.

An advanced version of the normal leg raise focusing on lower abdominals.

First: Place your feet on the swiss ball and and your elbows on the ground making a straight body line.

First: Grab a pull up bar or any overhead bar and let yourself hang without any swinging of the body.

Second: Hold this position as long as you can. Focus on your core and keep in mind that your body should be in a straight line.

7.

Second: Slowly raise your leg up and touch the bar with your feet. Bring your leg back down to the starting position. Make sure that your body does not swing and you are in control.

8.

side jack knife

russian twist

A great workout for your obliques.

Twist your obliques to get those great shapes.

First: Lie on the side of your body placing your one hand on your head and the other laid out in front of you.

First: Twist your obliques to get those great shapes.

Second: Slowly bring your legs up. Simultaneously crunch on the side and bring your elbows towards your legs. If possible, try to touch your knees with your elbow. When you do so, slowly go back to your starting position. Do about 15 – 20 reps of each side.

Second: Holding the same “V” position, slowly twist your hands towards the right. Make sure that your hands touch the floor. Once you’ve done that slowly come to the starting position and repeat again for the left side. When you twist both sides, count that as one rep.

Things to keep in mind:

April/May 2013

Second: Slowly bring your head and shoulders up to your knees. Make sure that your chin is high. Hold your position at the top and then come down slowly to the starting position.

1. While your muscle exerts pressure always make sure that you breathe out. 2. While doing crunches or sit always keep your chin up. 3. When you are coming down, make sure you slowly come down to the starting position. 4. Always focus on the target muscles. 5. For beginners, do about 15 – 20 reps and for advanced go to about 30 – 50 reps. As for hyper extension do a maximum of 15 – 20 reps. 6. If you feel easy while doing crunches, add weights. 7. Simple but the most important, when you’re trying to get a six pack focus on what you eat. Food plays a major role in the outcome. Sachit Pradhan, TNM’s fitness consultant, has taken part in countless competitions and games and has been able to win several of them. Here is a list of Sachit Pradhan’s favorite exercises during his preparation for a competition. However, he constantly changes the routine but these three top the list. 1. 2. 3.

The Father Figure of body-building: john weider Words: Aditya Malla

W

ith the arrival of summer in Nepal, it is time to work off those winter flab and get ready to show your body off. While some might just have the aim of staying fit this summer the rest might really want to bulk up and awe the people with those massive biceps and chests. But no matter what your aim is for this summer, remember to stay fit and just look good. When you think about body building or just think about muscles, I dare say that almost everyone will have one name in mind; Arnold Schwarzenegger. But while many of us think it was Schwarzenegger alone that did all the hard work, there was a force behind him that led Arnold to be who he is; his mentor and his coach, Joe Weider. Considered as the father figure of body building, Joe Weider recently passed away at the age of 93 after fighting illness and old age for a long time. Even though Weider is no longer in the world, he has left behind one of the most outstanding and frantic legacies in the field and art of body building. Joe Weider’s influence on bodybuilding and the fitness industry is so pervasive that it defies

measurement. The websites we visit, the magazines we read, the contests we attend, the diets we follow, the workouts we undertake, the vocabulary we use, the careers many pursue— they all exist in large measure because of Joe Weider. Known for starting the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding contest in the 1960s, “Joe Weider was a titan in the fitness industry and one of the kindest men I have ever met,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement posted on his official website. Born in the hard neighborhood of Montreal in 1920, Joe Weider began lifting weights as a teenager to stand up to bullies and older boys. However, things took a different turn after competing in his first bodybuilding contest

at the age of 17, according to a biography provided by Parker. One thing led to another and Weider had a new passion in hand. He started his first magazine, ‘Your Physique’, in the early 1940s and with his younger brother rented Montreal’s Monument National Theater to host the first Mr. Canada contest during that same decade. The two brothers also founded the International Federation of Bodybuilders and finally in 1965, Weider created the Mr. Olympia competition, the sport’s premiere bodybuilding contest. Joe Weider met Schwarzenegger at a bodybuilding contest in Europe. Seeing the massive potential in Schwarzenegger, Joe convinced him to move from his native Austria to the United States to seek wider recognition. Schwarzenegger then nicknamed the “Austrian Oak,” first gained fame by winning a string of Mr. Olympia titles in the early 1970s before going on to a successful career in such films as “The Terminator” and “Total Recall.” He was also elected governor

None of which would have been possible if it wasn’t for the vision of Joe Weider. Not only did Joe help Arnold with his training, but he also helped him in taking the first steps into business. In 2005, Mr. Weider was elected to be enshrined in the National Fitness Hall of Fame for his contributions in making physical fitness as a way of life so popular. This was the first year that the Fitness Hall Of Fame made such selections. Weider, who also created a line of sports nutritional supplements and ultimately founded more than a dozen fitness magazines including Fit Pregnancy, Living Fit and Flex, sold his Weider Publicans to American Media Inc. in the early 2000s. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Betty. There are few people who have made such an impact in the bodybuilding industry and in the fitness scene of the world and he leaves behind a fantastic legacy. Very few people can claim to have influenced as many lives as Joe did through his magazines, his supplements, his training equipment, and his big-hearted personality. Throughout his life he urged everyone to, “Exceed yourself !” There is no question that he did just that. April/May 2013

1974 AD the

Pictur e Perfect B and

Cover Story: Ankit Shakya | Photography: kishor Kayastha | Make-up: Miki Tanaka 1974AD is one of the most popular and influential band pioneering the Nepali music industry for almost 2 decades. Despite producing amazing albums over the years, each band member have his own individual projects venturing successfully on the sides. Besides music, these men are also the idealistic modern day Nepali men on all trades of life. TNM team is more than priviledged to have this rendezvous with them, highlighting their journey together and their individual life.

Many would not shy away from considering 1974 AD as the closest things to the Beatles that Nepal will ever have, and few would actually contradict it. With almost two decades under their belt, the band has remained a rock solid force in the music industry, consistently bringing out music that everyone loves. Not content with rocking just the nation, 1974 AD has performed in many parts of the world, winning over audiences of various nationalities and age groups. But it doesn’t end there. There is another side to the members of the band, who each are an entrepreneur in their own way. A band that has stood the test of time and maintained a proper stature in the music industry without succumbing to the typical band stereotype, 1974 AD has more or less been the face of the mainstream Nepali rock music scene. Thus, it seemed only natural to get to know them better for this second cover story of TNM.

We were asked to meet them at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory and excitedly made it to the venue spot on time. Manoj, Sanjay and Adrian were all standing around a Mac book on the table, hushed. Sanjay stood silent, a finger placed loosely on his lips, intent and observant. So we decided to not disturb and wait for them to be done with whatever they were concentrated on. Then Adrian asked us to come over and we quietly waited for Manoj to play the music video that he had edited. It was the interesting music video of the song ‘Neta Ji’, executed by Sanjay’s other band ‘Joint Family Internationale’. The upbeat reggae music of ‘Neta Ji’ ended the stillness and all three heads began bobbing to the beat and we couldn’t help ourselves from giving little foot taps of our own. A wide smile spread across Adrian’s face as he looked at us while leaning on the table, and we reciprocated with a nervous smile of my own. However, the nervousness disappeared in a short while as we were seated and began talking about the men and their band after Nirakar joined in. April/May 2013

37

TNM: Tell us how 1974 AD started. Nirakar: The band started out in 1994 and what we initially planned on was to have a nice time and a reason to get together and jam. We never really expected it to become this big. TNM: And man did you guys become famous! Nirakar: Yeah… bad luck I guess… (Followed by everyone laughing) TNM: Is there any story behind naming the band 1974 AD? Nirakar: Back in the days, we used to do a lot of cover songs of bands that existed in the 70’s. We loved the music of that era, and our name is a sort of tribute to that.

“Being in 1974 AD is very important for us. So the band gets a lot of priority despite many other things.”

TNM: 1974 AD has toured to various corners of the world. Where was your best experience? Adrian: Australia was really fun for me, what do you guys think? (Looking at the rest of the band who reciprocated with a nod) Nirakar: The US tour wasn’t bad either. TNM: Is there any special experience of your tours that you would like to share with us? Manoj: During our first US tour in 2002, which lasted 3 months, we got our own vehicle to move around in and that was awesome. We weren’t restricted to any flight schedules and we could stop anywhere we wanted to. In fact we even hung out with a group of Harley riders, which was great. It was a proper road trip, and at the end of the tour, our transportation costs rounded up to about $18000 -$19000. It has to be the most memorable tour.

TNM: Is there any particular performance where it struck you guys that you were making an impact? Manoj: Every performance we do has a charm of its own. Once you’re on stage, everyone is a different character. You feel like you are the king. But a particular concert that really struck us has to be when we performed at a California Fair. There were very few Nepali people in the audience and despite that we were performing our own Nepali songs (because we don’t do covers). Surprisingly, the crowd went crazy for us!! It was amazing to see non-Nepalese fans appreciating our songs. TNM: Every band has a member who is a little wild on stage. Who is that member in 1974 AD? Nirakar: Ooh (pointing at Manoj), that daaju there. People call him “ants in his pants” when you see him on stage. He is all over the place, crazy I tell you. Sanjay: There are times when we’re scared he’ll fall right off the stage. One time, I was looking at him on stage during our performance and he was running around like crazy. I was so worried he’d hurt himself that I messed up my part! TNM: You all seem like a playful group. Do you have nicknames for each other? Nirakar: We call Manoj - Kallu, Mannu, Hero… for obvious reasons (a nudge at Manoj Dai’s darker complexion). We kid a lot with names. Adrian: We have nick names for each other actually. Interestingly, all of it relates to each singer from The Beatles. I am called ‘Phone Lennon’ (John Lennon) because I am always on the phone, 24X7. Manoj is ‘George Hairy-Son’ (George Harrison) because god has blessed him

38

April/May 2013

with a generous amount of hair on his body. Sanjay is ‘Chindu Star’ (Ringo Starr) because of his bright bald head and Nirakar Dai is ‘Pual Ma-Gardney’ (Paul McCartney)… for some reason or the other. Sanjay: We joke around a lot and it is fun to hang out with the band. We’re always pulling each others’ legs. Manoj: Undoubtedly, Nirakar Dai is the leader of the band and we consider him as our ‘Dai’. He keeps us in check, especially during tours. If we get too out of hand, he takes us to a corner and sets us straight. Haha. Nirakar: And I don’t really care when I go off track myself… haha. TNM: You are a jolly group, but I’m sure there have been times when things did not look as good as it usually does. Sanjay: Yea, I guess every band has its ups and downs. For us it was when Firoz Dai left the band. It was a very tough time for the band. But things worked out as he came back last year and we did a massive concert in St. Xavier’s. By the way, we will be coming up with a new album in 2014 to celebrate our 20th anniversary as a band. TNM: Apart from the band, all of you have your own thing going. How do you manage to sync up with each other to practice? Nirakar: Being in 1974 AD is very important for us. So the band gets a lot of priority despite many other things. If we didn’t give priority to the band, we may not be in the position that we are in right now. But time and again, we decide to take breaks so that we don’t get saturated. And that’s when we gather new ideas and learn new things that we can implement on the band. TNM: What is the best part about being 1974 AD? Adrian: It’s probably the spectrum of the age group in our fans. We have listeners who range from children to old people. Maybe it’s because we’ve been in the industry for almost 20 years. TNM: Twenty years is definitely something to brag about, what’s in store for the future of 1974 AD? 1974 AD: Yeah, we’ll see where it goes. In the past, we did a lot of strategic marketing and cleverly made our every move. But now, we are in a position where we can dare to take things as they come. TNM: Tell us something that we don’t know about the band. Sanjay: Sadly, half of the things we couldn’t really tell you. Even if we did, you probably wouldn’t print it.

“I always had it in mind that I should be an army officer or something like that, but what can I say, that dream was pretty much demolished.”

ADR I A N PRAD HAN Adrian Pradhan was born in Kalimpong, did all his studies there and passed out from Kalimpong Government College. Adrian was into music from his childhood. He was involved in the local church choir and this was probably how the passion for music in him ignited. Because a career in music was not an ideal career according to the general norm, he initially had something else in mind. “I always had it in mind that I should be an army officer or something like that, but what can I say, that dream was pretty much demolished”, recall Adrian. He came to Kathmandu in 1994 to perform with his band from Kalimpong and started working in Little Angels School as an English teacher. Then he began teaching in Galaxy Public School and later on met Nirakar

Yakhtumba, who invited him to join the band 1974 AD. Although he started out on the piano for the band, he later shifted to madaal and later percussions. After becoming the voice of 1974 AD, the rest was history. TNM: What are your passions besides music? AP: For me, my main passion is music. Apart from 1974 AD, I have started another unplugged band which is coming out very nicely. I also have another band called Victory, with whom I do concerts and live tours. Apart from that, I get offers from Nepali movies and there is freelancing as well. But with all the things that are piling up, I get really busy. Currently, I’m also working on my new solo album where I’ve tried something new with folk music integration, and I am really anxious to see

how it’s going t do. TNM: Give us your take on politics. AP: I think everyone should rather just listen to the song Neta Ji. I would like to dedicate this song to all the ‘Netas’ and everyone who is said to be in charge of the country. TNM: If you could meet anyone in this world, dead or alive, who would it be? AP: I would like to meet my ‘boju’ (paternal grand mom). TNM: Three things you would want to have with you if you were stranded in a desert island. AP: My guitar, my phone and (after thinking for some time)… that’s it I guess! April/May 2013

M A NO J K C Manoj KC first got his hands on the tabla at the young age of three when an uncle began teaching him a few beats on it. A sincere student in his school days, he was into Eastern Classical music and regularly practiced after school. He later switched to Pianos and moved on to learning the Guitar. “The way I was introduced into 1974 AD was when I sold my guitar to Firoz Dai to buy an Ibanez. I asked him how to write notations, and he showed it to me”, says Manoj. At the age of 16, he was already handling a little bit of his father’s business and also opened a music pub in Jawlakhel named 3MB, with his friends. It had only been 19 months he had began learning how to play the guitar, but 1974 AD asked the then sixteen year old Manoj KC to perform with them in their outdoor concert in 1994. The second album, ‘Samjhi Baschu’ was the first album he was involved with in the band and began recording together with the third album ‘Sataabdi’. Because his father was living abroad and he had to grow up with his mother, Manoj KC was always independent. Right from learning to play the guitar to his hobbies like photography,

audio engineering etc, he learnt it all himself. “It’s easier for youngsters to learn things now through the internet, but it wasn’t the case back then. Now, I’m on the computer constantly, learning and updating myself constantly”, explains Manoj. TNM: What are your passions besides music? MKC: I have a lot of things going on, but everything revolves around music. I have a radio station RVL Radio where I do the Sound Designing. I am also involved in Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory where I teach Audio Engineering. KJC is a huge part of what I do now. Nirakar Dai and I wanted to make learning music a possibility in Nepal, and we are now doing it in the most professional manner possible through KJC. Apart from that, I do a little bit of background scoring for movies, amongst which Kagbeni, Sano Sansar and Highway is a few. I work as a producer and make television signature tunes too. Basically, everything I do is related to music in one way or the other. And most recently I have begun on editing music videos. TNM: What was your first guitar? MKC: It was a really nice Bruce

Springsteen styled telecaster model guitar that my Dad sent me. TNM: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? MKC: I would like to work on Audio Engineering sincerely, because that is what I do best. Another thing that I would like to do is start a school of rock guitar. I think that would be really cool and is something I have been thinking of for a very long time. Practicing and learning music is also on the top of my list as I want to continue what I am doing now. TNM: If there was anyone you could meet, dead or alive, who would it be? MKC: I would like to meet David Gilmore or Guthrie Govan. TNM: Which is one of your best times with the band? MKC: I was officially part of the band in ’98 with the launch of the album - Samjhi Baschu. We were all giving our inputs and I was pretty young at that time. So I played them my composition of ‘Parelima’ which I had composed before I was in the band. Since the song wasn’t quite refined, the band polished the song up and it came out to be a great hit. I’m glad to have brought in that song to the band.

NI R AK AR YAKHTUMBA After finishing school from North Point Darjeeling, Nirakar Yakhtumba finished college from Chandigarh. Once he got back to Nepal, he joined Gyanodaya School where he looked after the extracurricular activities and sports. He was especially involved into basketball, where he played a huge part in not only the school team but national team as well. In 1994, Nirakar Yakthumba and Firoz Syangden started 1974 AD, but it wasn’t until 1997 that he really took the band’s actions up a notch. “Slowly I started doing things on my own. In the early 2000, I had to make a decision about what to do, because I knew that doing too many things wouldn’t work well. So I discussed with my friends and family about getting seriously into music, and I got mixed reactions. But deep down, I knew that it would work out. Back then I wasn’t married, so my then girlfriend (now wife) used to call me a ‘dreamer’. But luckily everything worked out”, vividly recollects Nirakar. TNM: Music is your first love. But you have so many other things going on in

your life as well. Tell us more about it. NY: Ten years back I started Moksh, and I wanted it to be a spot where musicians could get together and jam up. Now, it’s come a long way. Lonely Planet has been recommending it for I don’t know how many years. Later, I was jamming with my friend Mariano when we decided to come up with a

Right now I am the Chairman of Chain (a company that manufactures Nepali mountain bikes). We also have a company called Life Cycle in Hetauda. And I play my part in Epic Events through which we organize mountain biking events and other outdoor events. We will be getting into international events too soon.

I have always been into martial arts as well, and now we are starting the first school of Akido Dojo, which is a different form of martial arts I am into. TNM: Are there any particular highs or lows during your career? NY: I feel really lucky to be doing what I am doing, because it has always been an extension of what I love. So it’s never been like working for me. Every day I look forward to doing what I am doing because I enjoy it. Right now I have another band called ‘What the Funk’ and I love jamming with them as well. I love everything I do, and I get paid doing that. I know that by doing what I am doing, I may not become the richest man in the country, but I don’t want to be that. I feel lucky to be where I am. TNM: If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be? NY: I would really love to meet Nelson Mandela, because to me what he has done is very inspirational. What he did shows that nothing is impossible. So, I’d like to toast a whisky with him. April/May 2013

“Music is my main passion and everything I do is related to music.”

s anjay shr es tha Brother Josh Niraula gifted Sanjay Shrestha with his first guitar after hearing him play with numerous bands in his school days at St. Xavier’s. Then in 1997, while studying in the 12th standard, Sanjay started a band called ‘Shristi’ with his fellow Xaverians. Shristi is remembered as bringing ‘fusion’ music to the mainstream audience in Nepal and was one of the first bands to cut a CD album in Nepal. While Sanjay’s first instrument was the Nepali folk maadal, his experience has led him to experiment with all kinds of drums and percussions and various forms of music including fusion, rock, classical, jazz, reggae, and heavy rock. Sanjay joined 1974 AD only in 1999 as a percussionist and shifted to drums in 2009. He has also been involved in the vocal sector of the band, singing the song Swargadapi Gariyasi’ on the Album ‘On Air’. In August 2009, Sanjay and some fellow Xaverians founded House of Music, which has gone on to become one of the premier live music venues in Kathmandu. And more

recently, has formed the reggae band ‘Joint Family Internationale’ who has come up with the latest musical hit in town – Neta Ji. TNM: Apart from music, what is your main passion? SS: Music is my main passion and everything I do is related to music. Currently, I am having a lot of fun working on the first album for Joint Family. Also, House of Music is a big part of what I am into right now, and that is turning out very well. Apart from that, I like travelling very much. TNM: Which place would you like to visit in the future? SS: I’d like to visit Cuba or maybe Jamaica. TNM: What is your take on politics? SS: I really don’t care who leads the country. All that matters is that, the one who takes the lead should be sincerely committed for

the betterment of the country, sacrificing every personal interest. TNM: If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be? SS: I would have liked to meet Mother Teresa. I wish I could ask her how she got the courage to sacrifice her own life for those of others. TNM: What three things you would want to have with you if you were stranded in a desert island? SS: A guitar, water and maybe a bottle of nice whisky so I can get into the groove. TNM: What do you consider to be your greatest strength and weakness? SS: My weakness is that I can’t say no to people. I am trying to change that about myself. My strength is that I like to socialize with new people and I am pretty easy going. That’s maybe why I have a lot of friends in different places.

years of super stardom apparently hasn’t gone to any of the band members’ head. It was surprising to see how down to earth each member of the band was. Despite the joking and playing around, the maturity level that the band has reached was easily seen. It was an eye opener to learn that the individual lives and the band scene of 1974 AD are two separate identities. But it was amazing to see how the band has withstood the test of time, and in spite of their diverse fields and individual lives, they still manage to gracefully converge into a unit of unparalleled epicness that we know lovingly as - 1974 AD.

what

MEN SHOULD

KNOW dating initially P

erhaps it was sheer coincidence but lately, a few conversations I had with my love-struck male friends who were frustrated over how they could not win over a girl’s heart ended with the reason “Well !! She is a gold-digger, that’s why!”

Dr. Jasmine Tenpa is a medical doctor by profession and writes as a freelancer. The article portrays her personal thoughts and observations. 44

April/May 2013

For me, when I’m part of such conversation, I can’t help but think, at least she is being honest about who she is, how about you? Granted you cannot know a person before you actually spend time with them, what I don’t get is why are these men still chasing these women, if they already know all she wants is their money? If a gold digger is a deal breaker for you, then why not cut loose? Are you as a man being honest with yourself as well? So before a man nametags a woman, “gold-digger”, shouldn’t he first contemplate about what vibe is he sending

out to her in the first place? All men are out there to impress and that’s a universal truth! The male birds are more vividly coloured, lions have their manes, gorillas puff their chests, so when it comes to the human species too, males do instinctively need to impress as well. The question that arises here is what is it that you are putting forward to impress with? If you are initially trying to impress her with money is it right to blame her for not liking you without it? So my fellow male friends, today we are going to talk about first impressions but before we talk about how to impress, we should deal with who to impress and why. While a majority of us date to find “the one” or to some extent some love and care, there

are moments when I guess we would date just to have some fun or find a companion and see how it runs. If that’s the case, then say it! If you are looking for just a companion and some fun, say that, you might get rejected by a dozen girls but you might just find someone who is looking for the same. In today’s world of fight for equality and feminism, you’d be surprised by how many women actually appreciate some honesty. Of course, when I say it, I don’t mean say it after 5 tequila shots with you slurring, “Iwaannnahafuun”. That is plain wrong! Be a man, and speak up sober with confidence! So while a fun relationship should be guiltfree and based on mutual respect, as for the rest of my friends who are actually looking to date for something serious, the foremost rule of dating is get to know yourself, after that try and understand what you are looking for in a girl. Once you are set, for a first date, take a girl to a place you can afford normally. That is take her somewhere you can afford to take her atleast once or twice a week later in the future as well. Don’t set the bar too high for yourself. A date needs to be entertaining enough, which does not mean you acting like a clown. A woman wants to be seen with a man that other women would want to be seen with, so please do not embarrass yourself or her for the matter. An entertaining date would be one that has some thought put into it. No girl likes coming for date where the guy keeps asking her about where to go and what to do next. Common courtesy calls you ask her if she has something on her mind. If the answer is no, make sure you have already thought of a few things beforehand. If you are not a very good conversationalist and get too nervous talking during initial encounters, then movie dates are good. You have two hours of splendid silence and can talk about the movie, favourite scenes, favourite actors, movies and so on and so forth after the movie ends. Coordinating

“A fun relationship should be guilt-free and based on mutual respect, as for the rest of my friends who are actually looking to date for something serious, the foremost rule of dating is get to know yourself, after that try and understand what you are looking for in a girl.” your date to an event where you know the people is a good way to go too. Buy her some dinner and drinks, take her out, you mingle with people, see how she socializes and have company to break the ice. Bowling, paintballing, karaoke or shooting some pool is a few other activities you can do too. Believe me, anything is better than standing on the street and saying “k garney?” (A tip for people low on money, time or conversation, it’s a good idea to take her out on lunch time. She needs to get back to work, you save money on drinks and she needs to be back to work and you are her little savior who was there giving her a break from work)

A sense of humour is normally high in a girl’s list of priorities. That does not mean, sitting down for hours of Knock knock or Rajesh Hamal jokes. Remember a girl is nervous too on her first date and she would love to laugh unexpectedly, not time it according to the jokes she has might have already heard a million times. Ten minutes is the maximum time you spend on saying jokes on a first date, you do not want to go home with pity laughs. Anecdotes and real life funny incidents are much better topics to talk about, those are something she might not have heard before and it also lets her know more about the things you’ve been through.

Next comes actual conversation, when it comes to that, be yourself, there is nobody else better to be. The earlier you show who you are, the easier it becomes to decide if the two of you are compatible. Of course, that being said doesn’t mean, you keep droning on and on about yourself. listening is also a part of being you, make sure you show that side of yourself as well.

Finally, make sure you take a shower, scrub your nails and put on some clean clothes. Try and not to speak ill about your exes or friends and learn to read between the lines. Sometimes a girl can drone on as well, but she’ll highlight what she really wants to say. Like if you think this column is too long and just want the pointers, read it through, this girl has capitalised them for you as well. April/May 2013

Signs of Women Flirting U

nlike Men, women have over 50 gestures that they use to flirt with. When a woman is flirting, she’s trying to get him to notice her and giving him an opportunity to make the first move. The problem with this female strategy is that a lot of guys are completely oblivious to it and, consequently, throw away a lot of

She smiles at you When a woman has an interest in you, her smile can hold your attention from across a crowded room and it is definitely one of the major signs she’s flirting. This means that she wants you to talk to her. Engage in her flirting by returning the smile. Plays with her hair She may twirl her hair in her fingers with gentle movements, such as mindlessly twirling a strand around her finger or running her fingers through it slowly are signs that she’s very interested. Eye contact One of the most obvious signs a woman flirting with you is when she continuously looks right at you and maintains prolonged eye contact. If the eye contact is for longer than normal duration and she scans you up and down, keeping her eyes locked on you while she talks or drinks, she’s already made up her mind that she likes what she sees. She compliments you Women are sparse with compliments, so if she throws one your way, you can pat yourself on the back. A woman who is flirting with you will tell you flat out that she thinks you are cute, compliment your clothes, hair or something that you 46

chances. The following are the most obvious signals women emit when they want you. Keep in mind, however, that lots of women are open and friendly to everyone, so spotting just one of these signs might not necessarily be enough to determine her interest.

mentioned in conversation. If you receive a compliment and she seems really into you, she’s definitely hoping you will ask her out. If you are interested in her as well, don’t forget to compliment her, otherwise she may think you are self-centered. She touches you A flirting woman will make an excuse to touch you, if only briefly. She might reach out and lightly touch your shoulder, forearm, hand or wrist during a conversation or put her hand on your knee while making a point. If she gives you any lingering touches and doesn’t immediately remove her hand, you know you’ve got a live one. Caressing erogenous zones When a woman often caresses her lips, neck, or collarbones, she’s sending you a signal that she wants you. This is commonly a subconscious way of drawing your attention to these areas, reminding you that she’s sexy and thus probably interested. Gauge her giggle factor Take notice of how often she smiles or laughs around you comparatively to other people. Often times, a woman who’s interested in you will find it hard to stop laughing in your presence. This may be during a conversation with you, during which she’ll make lots of

eye contact, smile, and giggle or laugh at even the most pitiful jokes, or it may be simply when she’s in the same room with you. She isolates herself from her friends Women know that men might find it difficult to talk with them while they’re in a group, so if she distances herself from her wall of friends and stands alone, looking at or gazing at you, then it is a sign that she is providing an avenue for you to initiate a conversation. She attempts to catch your attention If a woman glances and smiles at you while walking by you and in the process takes a longer route to get to the restroom, then it may be that she wants you to notice her. By walking past you repeatedly, out of her way, she’s giving you a sense that she wants your attention. Pay attention to her gaze A woman who is interested will not only check you out, but she’ll let you catch her doing it! Hope these pointers will help you differentiate between a friendly gesture and a flirtatious one.

Bigger than your budget? Think again...

The biggest budget buster is hiring others to do things you could do yourself.

Here are a few “Do It Yourself ” tricks that you can pull off and still achieve the look that you want. Paint Painting is an investment that gives you the most dramatic results while designing. Go ahead and put some color on those walls yourself for a fresh — and inexpensive — new look. Call in Family and Friends Call on a group of relatives, friends and neighbors who can supply the muscle to rip down unwanted wall paneling, roll on paint or assemble the furniture’s. Just don’t forget to feed them lunch.

Shop Secondhand - Look for Less-Than-Perfect Merchandise Browse thrift stores, recondition houses, consignment shops, friends garage sales, online auction sites or even your relative’s store room for that matter (who knows: what they have pilled for years due to some reason might just make the most eye-catchy display amongst your décor). Do be decent enough to ask for permission before invading their stock though! Slightly damaged goods wouldn’t matter much. Chances are: no one but you will be the wiser one and save big bucks. Remember, all old combined together with a touch of sensible placement creates a classic rugged style. Hence, I see no reason of being ashamed when your mind works more than your bills, to create a neat bespoke designer crib of your own. Mix, Don’t Match Not only is a “matchy-matchy” look boring, but buying entire suites of furniture tends to cost more than putting together a creative, eclectic look. Mix it up by opting for varieties. Add Unexpected Accessories almost anything can serve as an accessory, say: a stack of old books on the floor or even a bowl filled with crisp green apples which tends to lend a bright pop of color to just about any surface.

Urban in itself is a form of design, rather coat a layer of silicon on your walls

Reuse Items You don’t have to buy new pieces to turn your tired domicile into a hip space. Instead, turn a fresh eye to what you already have and think about how it might be camouflaged, repurposed or reimagined. Urban Unfinished Walls If you have the typical Nepali urban style unfinished wall at your place, you need not consider spending on plasters and paints. Urban in itself is a form of design, rather coat a layer of silicon on your walls and give the entire place an urban yet funky look. Bedroom Rip Off Counter techniques Consider getting a floor bedding: not a “Bed” “Bed”, just a great piece of huge fluffy mattress along with sets of simple duvet to make it looks classy. Yes, I said classy. I don’t really care for the word, but if I write the word “chic” I am going to have to punch myself in the face while consulting for BP’s. Consider adding a little ethnic touch by placing a custom made (low sturdy flat “Pirka”) as a side table on at least one side with a funky Nepali lamp on the other side of the bedding for a warmer feel. It’s always nice to be able to have a sip of water before you go to bed, when you wake up, or right after . . . well, you get the point. April/May 2013

Season of Polos SPRING/SUMMER \\

to add some variety to your wardrobe.

Men’s polo shirts are here to stay...No longer just associated with the sporty set, today: Polo’s have ascended, as the standard summer casuals for men. However, just because it’s widely accepted does not mean its use should be abused. Hence, a little attempt to brief you on the varieties of polo’s and some tips on how to carry them off with style this summer. Of course: Polo shirts are the ultimate in sportswear crossover, but their versatility with time has infiltrated mainstream fashion in a huge way, whether you are attending the movies, pubs, office, shops, gym, sporting event, hanging out at home or going out to dinner with family, these dressy casuals can be worn anywhere, anytime and will still be in style for years to come. Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest impressions on someone! The style and cut of polo shirts is anything but typical so you should check out if you’re looking 50

The Classical-Fit Mesh Polo is a more generous fit and is more comfortable to wear. The perfect style for any occasion which makes it timeless and classy, however still casual. This polo features two button placket and a ribbed collar. These solid polo’s are also classic men’s casual shirts and look great paired with a comfortable hoodie or blazer. The Slim-Fit ones are tight in characteristic and tend to fit the body perfectly. The Slim-Fit polo’s make the men look slimmer. Create an easy, everyday summer look with your polo shirt by pairing it above shorts. Printed shorts are the best way to ease you this summer. Just remember to vary your prints, neutralize your top half and keep the tones similar. Throw a blazer –matching or not – over the polo to smarten up a little while still keeping that casual edge. However, footwear options are limitless - the loafer is the king for sure. But some simple flip-flops, moccasins, canvas sneakers or a buck shoe would also look great. Classic-Fit Bar Stripes Polo looks great when tucked in to a nice pair of khakis.

For a bit of detail, turn-ups on the jeans would look fantastic – you could also consider doing up all the buttons on the polo. This look just can’t go wrong.

Other than accessorizing the key is to always keep your-self clean and wellgroomed for a sharper look. Loosen it a bit by wearing some light colored clothing and select fabrics made with breathable weaves for enough room for air to flow as you move about normally. Try keeping it understated. Dressing up right is definitely far more of an ordeal in summer than in winter. Recently however, recently attitudes towards summer style have taken on a more positive outlook. Menswear has not only nudged but shoved us in a two-handed dive into fashion towards being bolder with our seasonal wardrobe changes. During the scorching summer months, nothing feels better on the lower half of your body than wearing a pair of comfy shorts. And believe it or not shorts are probably one of the hardest items to put a decent outfit together with. That is why most men barely seem to pick out the right style that suits them best. Avoid making a gigantic sartorial blunder; follow this basic guide to choosing and wearing men’s shorts. Printed Shorts If you want to make a statement by purchasing a pair of printed shorts: utilize them as the focal point of your outfit. This can be done really easily by keeping the rest of your outfit in neutral colors. This will effortlessly draw your attention to your shorts. Just be keen to search for a pair that’ll comfortably embrace your rump and thighs without being too tight. Straight Cut Tailored Shorts When comfort clashes with tradition, a linen short like this one is just the thing you want 52

spring/summer 2013 Look Fresh, Look Young, Look Elegant. to slip into. These look best when matched with other smart casual pieces. Polo’s and slim-fit knit wears are the perfect accompaniments as they complement the essence of this look. Remember, length says a lot about a man; the modest gent should look for a pair that ends just above the kneecap, while the more adventurous can shave a couple of inches off with a pair that hits along the mid-thigh. Beyond this, you’re risking ‘too short’ and inviting unwanted attention. Cargos Shorts Cargo shorts are universally accepted as well as the perfect combination of serious style with some summer funk. The pockets of the cargos adds perfect appeal to style as well as is handy for keeping your wallet, keys, mobile etc. Just keep in mind the size of the pockets: the older the wearer the smaller the pockets need to be. Chino Shorts Chino’s provide nice pared down look that is both neat and crisp. Even as a street wise style, they make the wearer look refined and cultured. Also because the inseams are longer, chinos effortlessly maintain the façade of being almost formal but not quite, which is

perfect for an impromptu nice movie date. Cotton Shorts Loose and comfy, these cotton shorts definitely lull you into a long dreamless summer snooze. While pulling off cotton shorts remember to keep an eye on the rest of your outfit and choose your footwear carefully. Stick with a more casual type of shoe – whether it be suede brogues, loafers or a standard boat shoe – but experiment to find out what suits your personal style the best. Just a pair of simple summer slippers or flip flops would also just work fine for some. And there we have it, a hopefully helpful guide to pull the right kind of shorts for staying stylish this summer.

how to wear boat shoes

how to wear moccasins

1. Never wear your boat shoe lighter than your pant and shorts. Most conventional boat shoes come in chocolate, sandy or coffee hues. Go for other lighter hue shades for your trousers or shorts. 2. Never be caught dead wearing boat shoes with socks or any trouser whose length goes beyond the ankle. 3. While wearing khakis, wear them short. If wearing skinnies, wear them turned up (folded). 4. Make sure your feet don’t smell! Wash them with anti-bacterial soap daily and be sure to sprinkle foot powder in the sole to keep them in top of the line shape! 5. Keep in mind that boats go well with polo shirts, aviator sunglasses, stripes, colored bottoms, leather bracelets, wayfarer sunglasses, khaki pants and seersucker suits but of course depending on the occasion. 6. For a classier formal look you can pick some good quality leather boats. These can actually make your suit look edgier and more stylish. 7. Opt for suede boat shoes if you have to cover some miles by foot. The soft leather gives your feet more room to expand, which is a huge asset when walking long distances. 8. By far the most common top to wear with boat shoes for men is polo shirts. 9. One of the primary benefits of these shoes is that they are extremely versatile. Aside from anything too formal or dressy, you can pair almost anything with them and you’ll still look great. So try pulling off different looks just by changing the top wear. 10. If you want to go bold, try experimenting with the tri-tone colors, neon yellow soles, and jailhouse stripes with camo- shorts, gray jeans, Supreme gear—in short, anything that would give the country-club set fever dreams.

1. You can wear them with pretty much any kind of regular pant: jeans, khakis, corduroys etc; Any color works for moccasins. Just pick any neutral color black, brown, chocolate, chestnut etc; 2. Don’t wear unprotected leather moccasins out in the rain. Make sure you will not be walking through muddy or rocky terrain. Moccasins with built-in soles are usually thin and quite flexible, so they’re not the best choice for rocky areas. 3. Keep the leather clean to ensure its durability. Most types of leather last longer if kept dry and clean. 4. Watch the weather and avoid wearing the shoes when rain is forecast. If the moccasins get wet, dry them as soon as possible with a soft cloth. 5. Try avoiding socks, but if you have to then try wearing a no-show sock. They’re cut low enough that the socks won’t appear over your moccasins. 6. Think polo shirts, button-up oxford shirts and twill shorts to carry off with your moccasins. Keep colors light and airy. 7. Slipper wear – if you wish to wear comfortable footwear at home you should opt for moccasin slipper with soft soles. 8. Informal wear – Moccasins goes very well with informal wear such as sweat pants or casual clothing including khakis and jeans. Depending upon your preference you either adapt a pair with extra embellishments or go without any fringe or beads. 9. Formal wear – You can pair your moccasins with your formal pants as they compliment well with the formal wear too. Synthetic or natural leather, or suede are smooth picks when we talk about formals. 10. Although soft soled moccasins can be worn outside and leather is a tough material, it was never meant for hours and hours of exposure to concrete. The rugged surface will significantly shorten the life of your moccasin. April/May 2013

hair loss & myths explained

Heredity is the most common cause of hair loss in men, and inherited malepattern baldness, officially known as Androgenetic Alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss. Bald spots and receding hairlines are affected by three interdependent factors: Genes, Hormones and Age. It is due to the male hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) acting on genetically susceptible scalp hair follicles that causes them to become progressively smaller and eventually disappear. This process is called “miniaturization.

Follow a healthy lifestyle – ‘A Balanced diet’ is the key: Similarly other various causes of Hair Fall are: • Deficiency of vitamins, proteins and folic acid in regular diet • Insufficient nutrition and irregular diet • Work stress, worry, anxiety, pressure, tension, trauma and sudden shock • Heredity issues • Chronic illness • Unclean and dirty scalp • Poor blood circulation and less hemoglobin • High Fever, severe infection and flu • Fungus or ringworm infection caused to the scalp • Not massaging your scalp for long time • Bleaching and hair colouring • Tremendous exposure to sun • Perming, straightening or ironing hair • Use of chemicals Once your hairline starts running for the hills, it’s going to take a lot of grit and grime to get growing again. Hence preventing hair fall in time is a simpler process than fighting the war against treating hair loss. If you take proper care to keep the hair you’ve got, you will be blessed with better looks and healthier hair. So here are a few steps to prevent hair fall and to keep your confidence intact.

Healthy scalp A healthy scalp promotes hair growth. Nutrients and vitamins are needed to keep the hormone-producing glands going. Poor nutrition – crash diet or any diet that neglects basic nutrition in the pursuit of weight loss, may lead to hair loss. Eat a Balanced Diet Avoid greasy food; also limit excessively cold, spicy and sugary meals. A high-fat diet leads to increased testosterone levels, which has also been linked to hair loss.

Make it a habit to Practice Good Personal Hygiene It may seem too obvious to mention, but how a person treats his hair can also have an impact on hair loss. Dirty hair is more likely to get infected and fall – so keep your hair clean. Buy good-quality shampoo and conditioner. When you shampoo your hair, concentrate on the scalp and hair roots and while applying a conditioner or hair lotion, it is better to concentrate on the ends of your hair rather than the scalp. Avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel and brushing it while it’s still wet as it snaps off a lot of hair that could still be growing! Lastly, avoid chemical treatments, dyes, curling/straitening irons and blow dryers. These weaken and damage the hair and cause accelerated hair loss. April/May 2013

Exercise Regularly Exercise helps reduce stress, increases blood flow, and sweat can actually help clear impurities from the scalp. Easy on the stress Stress is almost an unavoidable part of life. Stress damages all of your body, and your hair is no exception. High levels of stress can cause your hair to come out in handfuls, adding up to as much as half to two-thirds of all your hair falling out. Loss of hair can be one of your body’s primary signals that you’re overdoing things and that it’s time to pull back. Be sure to get adequate sleep, the restorer of good health.

Going bald is not necessarily the end of the world. Try hair cuts that create illusions which help in the process to bald gracefully: A minute head-hugging crew-cut: which is a brilliant no-nonsense no fuss hairstyle. It does not highlight the baldness and looks very neat too. It can also be compensated with a stylish beard and moustache. Clean Shaven The completely bald look is a great option for men who have very large spots of bald patch that cover a good portion of their heads. For starters, you free yourself from the tyranny of ever having to style your hair again. On top of that shaving your head definitely makes a statement. It shows the world that you’ve accepted your hair loss and decided, “The hell with it!,I am who I am”. Finally, a clean shaven head can be your signature look, one that makes you unforgettable to the people who you meet. Everyone remembers the guy with a completely bald head: Vin Diesel. You get the idea!. Buzz Cut The buzz cut (brought in fashion by Jason Statham) is a good way to go if your hair is starting to thin on your crown or near your hairline. It gives you a clean, yet edgy look. Short Caesar Cut Inspired by Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and made famous by George Clooney. The Caesar cut is a stylish way to conceal a receding hairline and thinning top. 58

myths of male balding 1. Wearing hats/helmets Wear all the hats that you want, and ALWAYS wear your helmet. However, just make sure to let your scalp breathe for at least seven hours a day.

2. Using hair products Hair gels and sprays contain no active ingredients that promote male baldness, so don’t worry about using them. If you are still worried, then start using gels that are more naturalbased and contain ingredients such as chamomile and Aloe Vera.

3. Trauma Going through a traumatic experience will not make your hair fall out.

4. Playing with your hair Twiddling your fingers and always playing with your hair does not cause premature baldness. If you do this though, you should seriously consider stopping; it might be a sign of stress and nervousness.

5. Viral infections There are no viral infections that cause direct balding. Some powerful medications, however, may be culprits of hair loss since they kill off the hair’s roots. In any case, always consult your physician.

6. Sun bathers If you’re a sun dweller, don’t worry; it will not harm your precious follicles. Most of your hair already protects your scalp from the sun’s dangerous UV rays. Normally though, the sun’s radiation could play a part in thinning a person’s arm and leg hair. If you approach it from the right angle: Going bald is not a curse! You should translate it into enduring self-assurance and carry it with Confidence and Style. But on that note: Never ever take your hair for granted either. The adage “Prevention is better than cure” fully applies to your hair too. If you are not ready to accept any hair related issues in your later stage of life you should start taking proper care of the early signs of hair thinning. This might save you from losing confidence and also losing some larger amounts from your bank balance on expensive chemical / surgical hair re-growth procedures.

There is no fuel tank, no centre stand, no storage compartments, no windshield and hardly any plastic body parts.

SACH MADASS 125

One Crazy Ride Is it motorcycle, moped, scooter, electric bike or a cycle? These are the first questions that immediately strike your mind after a quick look at this naked to the core step-through or underbone motorcycle - Sach Madass 125. Sach is German motorcycle manufacturer who has already been in the business for over 100 years and the MadAss is being introduced in Nepal by Eco Auto, a new subsidiary of Saakha Group. There is no fuel tank, no centre stand, no storage compartments, no windshield and hardly any plastic body parts. It’s a motorcycle stripped to its purest form.

The MadAss incorporates a radical and truly revolutionary design unlike any other motorcycle, which is a fresh change from the barrage of the usual motorcycles and scoters running rampantly in the market. Overall, the build quality looks solid with a commendable fit and finish quality. The MadAss is definitely an attention grabber with its compact and wildly aggressive looks. Wherever you go, this alien looking motorcycle invites a lot of inquiries and glances. The engine on the MadAss is based on the popular horizontal one cylinder that was originally used in Honda mopeds and small motorcycles from the late 1960s. The carburetted single-cylinder 125cc engine is capable of 8bhp of power at 8400rpm and 9Nm of torque at 5400rpm. The MadAss is a pleasure to ride in the city and nearby outskirts of the valley as well. The bike was very flickable and the tall stance of the bike provided enough visibility to easily navigate through the sea of traffic. It was also quite a satisfying revelation when the MadAss could easily muster around 95kmph at full throttle in the fourth gear and felt composed when charging through the corners. With

the presence of disc brakes both front and back, the brakes too were powerful enough to control the bike. We tried a bit of offroading as well and the MadAss proved to be a pleasure with the suspensions nicely soaking in the bumps. On the practical side, the MadAss should return an efficient mileage of 40-45kmpl. The MadAss is sure weird looking, but eccentric and eye catching at the same time. It not just looks oddly great, but should be simple to maintain as well. So, is the Sachs MadAss 125 really worth the money? It certainly is a bit overpriced when compared to other similar capacity bikes which highly deliver much more on a practical note. But if you are the kind who would rather stick to the herd mentality and are more inclined towards the practical side of things, then you are probably looking at the wrong product. The MadAss is rather a brilliant option to break away from the usual crowd and bring out that eccentric man in you! price: Rs. 1,85,000/color options: Flat Black, Red, Yellow, Graphite, Silver contact: Eco Auto - 9851025061 | 5011500 April/May 2013

done is mainly through Facebook and text messages to the customers.

Karma Gurung The man behind Isis Lounge and the recently opened Isis Restro & Hookah Bar is definitely one of the most successful entrepreneurs around right now. With two well established lounges under his belt, Karma Gurung has become a renowned name and face in the Kathmandu scene today. We were fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to meet up with him in person and know more about the man himself. TNM: How did you get your idea or concept for the business? I’ve been in the hospitality business for several years now. So, I had this raw passion to do something different in the hospitality business. This is the very reason I opened Isis Lounge with Egyptian interiors which I believe is the first of its kind. After Isis, I couldn’t stop myself from wanting something completely unique. This is why, I opened my second venture, Isis Restro & Hookah Bar and this time I chose an Arabic theme for the interiors. The place is really colorful and has great hookahs. TNM: What was your mission at the outset? There wasn’t any specific mission as such in the beginning. I just wanted to do something different. It feels really great to know that Isis Lounge has become one of the best places in Kathmandu right now. TNM: How many employees do you need to sustain your business? Combining both Isis Lounge and Isis Restro and Hookah Bar, there are almost 50 employees. Most of the employees are between the ages of 21 to 30. Several college students are also employed as part timers. However, the chefs employed are professionals which make them a little older than the average age. TNM: How do you advertise your business? Frankly speaking, right now I haven’t really advertised my business as such. I’ve been able to come so far with all the support from my friends and especially through word of mouth. Besides this, any other source of advertisement I’ve

TNM: What do you think is the main attribute that drives you to success? I’m still working on trying to be a successful person. But till now, I believe my passion, hard work and most of all, the support from my friends has been a major contributor towards my success. Furthermore, I think a dedicated and hardworking team coupled with a really good relationship between an employer and an employee plays a major role in success of any business. TNM: What is unique about your business? I guess the interiors are the most unique thing in my lounges. Besides the interiors I think that the music combined with the ambience of the place really gives our customers memories to cherish. TNM: What are your responsibilities as the business owner? To make sure everything is running smoothly. Besides that I really put an effort to keep my staff happy and satisfied. Almost forgot, I have to make sure that the business is making profit. (haha) TNM: What made you choose this type of business? I’ve always been amused and enthusiastic about the hospitality business. Besides hospitality business, I love music and loved socializing with people. So, when I mixed all my interests, I guess a lounge was the only thing that really brought these things together. A lounge is a perfect place to relax with some good music; it was a place where I could build my PR and tend to customers at the same time. TNM: Who exactly are your customers? If I had to generalize my customers, I’d say from Business people to doctors and especially models and actors. TNM: Describe the average day in the life of Karma Gurung. what is it like? There are a lot of things that come up unexpectedly daily, so this means I need to be running around constantly to get things to run smoothly. Besides, if you see me, I’m always on the phone taking care of business. Generally, I tend to settle a lot of my business through phone calls. And yes, whenever I have time I’m just kidding

I believe my passion, hard work and most of all, the support from my friends has been a major contributor towards my success. around at Isis Lounge. TNM: What’s the worst business advice you have received? I can’t say this out loud in public since I don’t want to offend anyone. However, talking about my business advice, I guess I’ve always done business with instincts rather than thinking logically. But that’s what worked for me. TNM: If you had one piece of advice to give to someone just starting out in the business world, what would it be? This might be clichéd but I would seriously want them to ask themselves, “Is this what I actually want”? I see a lot of people doing several things and at certain point of time they suddenly realize that what they are doing is just not worth their time. So before you venture into any business, please make sure that you really think things through and only jump into it if you are really passionate about it.

A PRISON BREAK A prison break is probably the most ridiculous basis for an inspiration or motivation. But after having sat through this 1979 Clint Eastwood movie - Escape from Alcatraz, I couldn’t help and not be motivated with the will and determination displayed by the group of prisoners of this prison break movie. And mind you, this was no fiction flick, as it was based on a true story of prison break from the highly confined walls of the Alcatraz Prison in 1962. Of course, with no intention whatsoever to hatch a personal prison break plan, I had to research more on this story and share it here. Situated on a rough spit of sandstone in the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Prison was an impenetrable fortress made to keep the most hardened criminals locked away and considered to be the ultimate detention centre for the most notorious of criminal perpetrators. The likes of Machine Gun Kelly, Al Capone and Robert Stroud were some of the infamous criminals to have been put behind the bars at Alcatraz. This Devil’s Island had definitely earned its reputation. The 1912 design of the prison was very well 72

April/May 2013

thought out. The thick concrete walls with barred windows of the prison played a one barrier and the treacherous cold oceans surrounding the island created another. And inside of these impassable walls were another cell blocks that made this fortress a prison within a prison. The 1934 remodelling replaced all the iron bars with hardened steel, called “tool-resistant” steel because it could withstand cutting with a hacksaw. Cell doors were mechanically accessible and the guards could operate them individually as well as in groups by pulling levers in a control panel. Metal detectors that were relatively new technology during the 30’s were also available. And with armed guards (rumoured to be professional marksmen) on watch 24X7, escape was considered impossible. Hence, it was aptly named: The Rock. Nevertheless, it still did not stop many from trying. There were several reported cases of attempted escapes, but most were recaptured or shot; except for one particular case. If there ever was an inmate that was destined to escape from Alcatraz, it was Frank Lee Morris who was credited to possess “superior intelligence” by officials. After a lifetime of navigating the prison system right from the age of thirteen, Morris was sent to Alcatraz in1960 after creating a commendable

resume of attempted and succeeded escapes from various prison facilities. Morris is considered to be the mastermind behind what is probably the only successful escape from The Rock. Accompanying Morris were the Anglin brothers, John and Clarence, who were equally acquainted with the world of crime and doing time at Alcatraz after several escape attempts. Allen

West, another inmate, was also in on the scheme. With their cells adjacent to each other, the inmates hatched one of the most ingenious prison escapes in history, whose success is still debated till today. The escape plan started taking shape on December 1961, and would span out for almost a year before execution. The complex plan involved the fabrication of life-like dummy heads, makeshift rafts, life preservers and crudely made tools to dig with. Years of wear and tear had corroded some parts of the prison which made way for Morris to find a weak link in the escape proof prison - the vents. After painstaking grit and work, Morris and the Anglins had dug through the cell’s 6 X 9 inch vent holes, and had started work in the vent on top of the cellblock by May of 1962. During the process, the inmates worked turn by turn on the vent. One would meticulously chip away at it while the others would stay on lookout. Once they could wiggle out of the vents into the piping system of the prison, the inmates covered the hole with cardboard painted to look like the vents. They then fabricated crude but lifelike dummies of their heads out of a homemade mixture of soap, concrete debris and toilet paper. To finish it off, the dummies were painted with flesh colour and topped off with real hair in order to fool the guards. The rafts and life preservers were also made with the use of stolen raincoats and hot glue from the workshops. Stealing useful material to aide in their escape plan was one of the core bases of the whole design. After months of long preparation, the inmates had completed fabricating all of the gear they needed for their escape, and they then continued working to loosen the

ventilator grill on top of the cell. But while the others had progressed well in their various preparations, West had fallen behind in digging out the ventilator grill at the rear of his cell. His primary role had been to construct the life preservers and special wooden paddles for the raft, tasks which didn’t require him to leave his cell. On the night of June 11, 1962, Morris indicated that the top ventilator was loose enough to attempt the escape. After lightsout, the inmates commenced their escape, but West was still having trouble with his vent. Despite the efforts of Clarence Anglin to kick in the vent, it would not budge. The rest of the escapees had no choice but to abandon West. The Anglins and Morris then made their way to the roof through the piping area and climbed down the pipes to the ground and across the wall into the waters where they inflated the rafts and swam across the bay. Meanwhile, West had finally been able to get the vent loose, but it was already too late. West later told the authorities during questioning that their plan after reaching ashore was to steal a car, burglarize a clothing store and head their separate ways. As soon as the guards found the dummy heads, a massive manhunt was initiated involving over 20000 officials. But the escaped felons were long gone. The manhunt ended up pretty empty handed except for a bag with photographs and phone numbers. Now, the successful completion of the escape has been heavily debated. Despite having escaped the prison grounds, the task at hand for the escapees would have just begun. The treacherous cold water surrounding the island was allegedly infested with man eating sharks. This was, however, later ruled out as a myth. Nevertheless, the swim to shore in the freezing waters was not a task that would be easily completed, especially on flimsy makeshift rafts and life preservers. Add to it the unpredictable tides,

and the whole ordeal seemed impossible to complete. Although no bodies were recovered, the authorities stated that the felons did not make it out alive. Firstly, because according to West, the original plan was to steal a car and burglarize a store, both of which were not reported anywhere around the city. Secondly, sources reported that these three men had neither friends nor relatives with the financial resources to come to San Francisco and assist in the escape as it would have cost thousands of dollars to put a boat in the Bay night after night, waiting for the one night when the escape actually took place. After decades of investigating, the F.B.I concluded that there were more key findings indicative of a failed escape rather than any evidence that would suggest any of the inmates found their way to freedom. But there have been reported cases that seriously question these conclusions. The family of the Anglin brothers are said to have received anonymous postcards on birthdays. Also, it was reported that two suspiciously tall unknown women in dark black gowns were present at the funeral of the Anglin brothers’ mother. But they vanished before the FBI could get hold of them. The chances may be slim and narrow, but such stories and the lack of concrete proof to establish the death of the 3 escapees leaves room to debate that the escape was actually a success. Regardless of what actually did happen, the three inmates were able to do achieve what was considered unattainable. This only goes to show how perseverance, hard work and well thought out strategies can overcome the impossible. What they did is a criminal offense of the highest degree, but nothing can be taken away from their will and determination. It exemplifies how far people are willing push the boundaries to attain something of exceptional value like their freedom; or how brutal the confines of the concrete walls were to be forced attempt such a daring escape… April/May 2013

TNM CAREER

OFF-BEAT PROFESSION

April/May 2013

Ahmed Dulla Nepali is now a certified Footwear Designer and has just recently started selling shoes under his own brand name 'DULLA Shoes'. All of us have turning points. In life, there is always something or the other in store for each of us. But, isn’t a transition from a below average student and a passionate basketball player to a Footwear Designer quite an unexpected one? Footwear has been a necessary component to fully clothing humans for thousands of years. It’s also popularly said that the shoes tell the most about a man/woman. As such, over the years, field of studies have developed which further nurture this traditional art of shoemaking in a modern scenario. So, we had to catch up with Ahmed Dulla Nepali, who is now a certified Footwear Designer and has just recently started selling shoes under his own brand name ‘DULLA Shoes’, to learn more about his interesting career path. During his entire years at school, Ahmed Dulla Nepali was never an academically excellent student. Ahmed vividly recalls, “Back in school, I failed and repeated class in three different grades. There was a time when I really wanted to give up studying. It was only after repeating in the seventh grade that I was suddenly determined to try harder. Then I never failed after that and managed to keep myself afloat amongst the average students.” But he was very fond of basketball and wished to become a professional NBA player in the future. However, it was only after passing out from high school that he came to his senses and realized that it was perhaps quite a far-fetched dream. “I used to play a lot of Basketball. But for me, Basketball wasn’t just about

honing my skills with finding the hoop. I was equally fascinated by the variety of stylish sneakers that many top players from the NBA League wore in the competition. Every time I returned to the hostel from my holiday, I would always have a couple of new sneakers to show off. Of course, with my parents based in Tibet, stocking up on these shoes was easier with most of them being cheaper Chinese knock-off replicas.”

Ironically, from a wannabe NBA player he is now a certified Footwear Designer. Ahmed though still insists that this sudden transition in life is still rooted to his NBA dreams. “After finishing high school with a Humanities & Arts background, I literally had no idea what I should do next. So as I sat down on Google and discover my options, I came across this graduate degree on Footwear Designing. With my fascination for shoes, I knew it then and there that this course was tailor made for me. So if not as a player, I can now still aim for the NBA as a Shoe Designer!” Footwear Designing is a subject of study where you are taught everything about shoes, from the initial designing process, making techniques, right material selections to the final execution. One is theoretically as well as practically educated on every component of a shoe and well professed to use all the machines. “It took me three years to graduate with a Diploma in Footwear Designing from Footwear Design and Development Institute, India. During the years at April/May 2013

college, I learnt the designing and construction of different types and styles of shoes, under a variety of technologies. We were exposed about the past, latest technologies and modern practices of shoe-making, to determine the aesthetic appeal of a shoe. Our course ranged from leather costing, leather identification, cutting techniques, seam closings, binding treatments, soles developing, hand lasting to machine lasting, etc. I have also done a year in designing specialization from pattern cutting to last selection and material costing to sourcing of materials. I have completed my 2D and 3D CAD as well”, says the 27 year old Ahmed. Considering his obsession for shoes, the idea that he could now design and make his own shoes was obviously very fascinating for him. But many people still assume that a shoemaker and a cobbler are the same, which is a misconception. So taking up this unheard career path definitely must have had its share of hurdles. “My dad started off as a taxi driver during his younger days in Kathmandu. In fact, when I once told him that I too wanted to be a Taxi Driver, he wasn’t surprised a bit. He rather assured me that, regardless of whatever I do, I should always be hard working and sincere. So when I convinced him of sincerely pursuing Footwear Designing, he didn’t object and I easily got the green signal from my family. But, a lot of my friends and relatives still hadn’t heard about a course in Footwear Technology. So while pursuing my degree, I did have to bear with some new nicknames like high-tech cobbler, mochii, etc. Then there were the occasional jokes in social gatherings, being asked to mend people’s shoes. But today, when the same people appreciate the outcome of my work, it further inspires and justifies my career path.” Presently, Ahmed has managed to establish his own brand ‘DULLA SHOES’ with his own resources and knowledge. He outsources his designs for production to a factory in Delhi and sells the shoes through various outlets in India and Nepal. In Nepal, they are available online through www.UpandSass.com and will be soon sold at the upcoming Trendsetters Store in Durbar Marg.

“I am someone who is heavily inspired by shoemakers like Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin and Aldo Bensadoun. So treading on their path, I decided to stick to my surname for the brand name rather than coining up some other fancy names. My shoes are all hand-made and they are made from all genuine leather, in limited pairs only. Some of my customers have even compared my shoes with other big brands in the market and it’s a huge accomplishment for me to be preferred over those brands”, claims Ahmed.

“Some of my customers have even compared my shoes with other big brands in the market and it's a huge accomplishment for me to be preferred over those brands.”

Though he is still yet to ascertain his specific genre of focus, for now, it’s in designing women’s shoes. He states that there is so much to experiment with women’s shoes than men’s. He believes that shoes are like drugs for girls, as a good pair of shoes easily makes them feel good and confident. But men, according to him, generally don’t tend to invest much in shoes and have lesser demand for different varieties. In the future, Ahmed hopes to see more people walking down the street in a pair of ‘DULLA Shoes’ and ultimately aims to earn a global recognition amongst other giant shoe companies. Ahmed’s career path is a fresh change from what most of us commonly opt for ourselves like business, medicine or engineering. Similarly, we hope that more Nepalese people begin to explore their career options and invest their time and money in what they genuinely love doing. Ahmed agrees, “You have to remember that if you follow the crowd, then you will never get further than the crowd. The one who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been. So take up what’s best for you and execute with utmost sincerity. At the end of the day, there really is no substitute to hard work and having faith in oneself. Life’s beautiful; you either choose to give up as a loser or stand up, dust yourself and make it happen no matter what!” For more info: www.facebook.com/Dullashoes

TNM SUPPORTS

TNM is dedicated to discover and promote young professionals in all sectors and give them a platform for recognition as an encouragement.

A young duo who pride themselves on producing original house and electronic music; House Mafia Project.

In an era where electronic and house music has taken over the entire globe and names like David Guetta, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia have become household names, two young guys from Nepal are keeping the Nepali scene alive with hopes and dreams that one day Housemafia Project Nepal will be categorized in the same league. Producing, playing and sharing the love of electronic music in Nepal and India, the duo of 23 year old Sumit Rajbhandari and 22 year old Manish Gurung were studying together when they decided to pursue their love for electronic music. Citing inspirations from different DJ’s including David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Swedish House Mafia as well as rap music, these young guns believe that their original production gives them the edge over the rest. So, TNM caught up with them to talk about their story and the current party scene in Nepal. TNM: Tell us about your current DJ/Production setup? What hardware/Software do you use? Our current set up is Pioneer Cdj 800 mk II, Behringer VMX 1000 mixer, Denon 4500. For production we use m audio, Fast track Pro, Axiom 49, M – Audio Studio monitor, Sennheiser Headphones. For Software we use Cubase 5 rewired with reason 5. TNM: So who do you think is throwing the best parties in KTM right now?

The Ice Bar. We still remember we were pretty nervous but when we started playing we just couldn’t stop.

taking place but right now, it’s definitely getting better and it is one of the main attractions in Kathmandu. If we are to go at the same rate we are at right now, we’d say Kathmandu will definitely end up being one of the biggest party scenes around. Of course, it might take longer than 5 years but we hope we do get there. With the existing drinking and driving rules and also shutting down of events by midnight, the party scene has faced quite a setback. But, if we are to improve the public transportation system during the night and if certain zones are dedicated as all night party places, the party scene would improve tremendously. Keeping it real as for right now, we hope that the parties could go on past midnight without any restriction of time so that people can enjoy the moment.

TNM: Which has been the best event that you’ve played at?

TNM: Share with us the funniest thing that happened during an event?

Pariwartan Tundikhel tops our all-time favorite list. The crowd was massive. We’d say around 10,000 people attended the event. It was colossal!

We should have thought of it that we would be getting this for sure but we didn’t. So it was a real shocker for us when in one of the events people started requesting for a “Dohori.”

While music is our passion, we believe education is an important part of life as well. performed in so far? We have performed in more than a 100 events. Some of the events we really had fun performing are: Pariwartan Tundikhel, Riverside Grind, TKP Babaal Dasain Carnival and Holi Bash. TNM: Where did your first performance take place?

TNM: Out of all the tracks in your playlist, which one never fails to get the people pumped? All the tracks that we have come up with are very dear to us. But, if you really had to make us choose, Namaste Kathmandu would be it. We collaborated with Mingma for the single and it just seems to hit that chord with the crowd every time. TNM: Your favorite mix set of all time?

With the boom of the event management companies right now, I guess each and every party has its own charm. However, if we had to pick one it would definitely be the pioneers of the party scene; PartyNepal

It has to be the Grind Set

TNM: Which and how many events have you

Before, there weren’t a lot of parties and events

78

April/May 2013

TNM: How do you see the party scene of Nepal 5 years from now? What can be done to improve the scene?

TNM: What do you do outside the Djing music scene? While music is our passion, we believe education is an important part of life as well. So besides Djing we are currently enrolled in BA. TNM: Anything else you want to say? Any shouts? Enjoy the Nepali Electronic Dance Music (NEDM). Support your local electronic acts so, that they can do well in the near future. We urge the event management companies to support the local artists along with bringing many famed international artists in the country. Lastly, we would like all the event companies to come together and organize an Electronic Dance Music Festival here in Nepal.

NERDs OR

geeks When people say: “You’re a geek!”, “You’re a nerd!” what does that mean? Are they compliments, or what? So let’s try making this easy and not confusing, by unraveling what exactly the difference is and whether you can relate to them or not. Social Attributes

Fanatic About

A Nerd, on the other hand, is overly intellectual & obsessed towards academics such as math and science. Or let’s say the general implication is of an irritating and unattractive person who may be brilliant, but who chooses to focus on non-social pursuits. These kinds are seemingly least interested in the details of daily life, being more focused on the macroscopic concepts, such as scientific possibilities and the future of humankind. They also tend to show attributes such as being a bookworms, library hounds, and love to achieve academic honors.

Whereas, for a Nerd, their interest lies in games that are strategic such as Dungeons & Dragons and television shows such as Star Trek, as it shares the same level of complexity.

A modern day Geek is usually more interested in creative works such as, science fiction/ fantasy, computers, video games, comic books, graphic novels, and of course the internet. They are generally very knowledgeable and show vested interest in one particular thing, even to the point of obsession when it comes to the particular topic of interest.

A Geek may enjoy board games, film, tech gadgets, hacking, and techno music. Geeks can be included in the list of people who are fanatic about watching Star Wars.

Socializing Behavior The Geeks react better to social stimuli than nerds, but tend to use obscure references abundantly which eventually bore those that do not understand it. They can also be prone to being pretentious and long-winded, especially when the topic happens to land on their particular passion. While the Nerds love using gobbledygookguff or unfamiliar terminology in their dialogue, they have a tendency to keep to themselves or seek the company of others that share complex and academic interests.

Occupational Interests Geeks want fun while they work. As a result, they gravitate toward jobs that let

them indulge in their interests and use their obscure expertise on a particular subject for a more practical purpose. Hence, they land up becoming writers, graphic artists, or animators. A Nerd is also referred as a “four letter word” with a “six-figure income”. As such, they end up in fields with a focus on the applied sciences like computer programmers, scientists, professional abacus builders, engineer, or an inventor, or even a brilliant recluse who rarely sees the light of day, as they tend to seek jobs that benefit from their devotion to all things academia.

Dress Code Geeks, try to pull off something that reflects their interests. The most common of all Geeks can be spotted wearing a sneaker, jeans, and a graphic tee featuring

a cartoon, movie, or other intellectual property, which according to them is their interpretation to standard. A Nerd on the other hand carries a conservative mindset and is more of an introvert. Slacks, button down shirts, and dress shoes are some of this species’ favorites. Geeks, try to pull off something that reflects their interests. A surprising, gripping narrative depicting the thinkers whose ideas shaped contemporary China, India, and the Muslim world

Transform your life. Rewrite your destiny. In his most personal novel to date, internationally bestselling author Paulo Coelho returns with a remarkable journey of self-discovery. Like the main character in his much-beloved The Alchemist, Paulo is facing a grave crisis of faith. As he seeks a path of spiritual renewal and growth, his only real option is to begin again—to travel, to experiment, to reconnect with people and the landscapes around him. Setting off to Africa, and then to Europe and Asia via the Trans-Siberian railroad, he initiates a journey to revitalize his energy and passion. Even so, he never expects to meet Hilal. A gifted young violinist, she is the woman Paulo loved five hundred years before—and the woman he betrayed in an act of cowardice so far-reaching that it prevents him from finding real happiness in this life. Together they will initiate a mystical voyage through time and space, traveling a path that teaches love, forgiveness, and the courage to overcome life’s inevitable challenges. Beautiful and inspiring, Aleph invites us to consider the meaning of our own personal journeys.

A little more than a century ago, as the Japanese navy annihilated the giant Russian one at the Battle of Tsushima, original thinkers across Asia, working independently, sought to frame a distinctly Asian intellectual tradition that would inform and inspire the continent’s anticipated rise to dominance. Asian dominance did not come to pass, and those thinkers—Tagore, Gandhi, and later Nehru in India; Liang Qichao and Sun Yatsen in China; Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Abdurreshi al Ibrahim in the ruins of the Ottoman Empire—are seen as outriders from the main anticolonial tradition. But Pankaj Mishra shows that it was otherwise in this stereotype-shattering book. His enthralling group portrait of like minds scattered across a vast continent makes clear that modern Asia’s revolt against the West is not the one led by faith-fired terrorists and thwarted peasants but one with deep roots in the work of thinkers who devised a view of life that was neither modern nor antimodern, neither colonialist nor anticolonialist. In broad, deep, dramatic chapters, Mishra tells the stories of these figures, unpacks their philosophies, and reveals their shared goal of a greater Asia. Right now, when the emergence of a greater Asia seems possible as at no previous time in history, From the Ruins of Empire is as necessary as it is timely—a book essential to our understanding of the world and our place in it.

An authority in the media circles, Vinod Mehta, journalist and Editor of Outlook magazine, presents his life through a candid and scandalous account in his autobiography, Lucknow Boy: A Memoir. The book contains several interesting accounts, starting from incidents in his younger days to his interactions with celebrities from different spheres like business, politics, the entertainment industry and the media. It has several interesting anecdotes and crisp word sketches of celebrities like Shobha De, Sonia Gandhi and Salman Rushdie. The story starts in the city of Lucknow, where Mehta grew up with his family members, who were refugees from Pakistan. The book provides an interesting account of his time in Britain, when Mehta’s journalistic interests were fueled by English newspapers like The New Statesman, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. It then charts his return to Bombay, and his stint as the editor of Debonair, an Indian version of Playboy. Mehta also explains his early efforts in establishing The Sunday Observer and Outlook, while slowly turning into one of the most influential personalities in journalistic circles. Thanks to his decades of experience in the journalistic field, his autobiography holds a treasure chest of interesting instances that add spice to the book. He also shares his valuable insights and experience, providing tips for aspiring editors and journalists.

Shiva, one of the chief Hindu deities, is portrayed in an entirely different light in Amish Tripathi’s debut novel, The Immortals of Meluha. The first book of The Shiva Trilogy, The Immortals of Meluha charts Shiva’s journey from the mountains with his Tibetan tribesmen to the kingdom of Meluha, which is occupied by the Suryavanshis, a race of people who are descendants of Lord Ram and live along the banks of the River Saraswati. When an episode involving the preserving drug somras leaves his throat blue, Shiva is hailed as the ‘Mahadev’ according to an ancient prophecy, the man who’ll lead the Suryavanshis to victory against the Chandravanshis. Caught in the middle of a tense conflict, Shiva must now make some quick decisions to save Meluha from the wrath of the evil Chandravanshis and their twisted and disfigured assassins, The Nagas. The Indian Premier League: Cricketainment, Cricketainment and only Cricketainment. A round up feed about everything IPL to keep you updated this season. The current edition:

T

hey say, in India, only three things rule the masses – Bollywood, Marriage and Cricket. Out of these three, Cricket has become massively synonymous with India and has been mutually inherited in the genes of every Indian. The famous 1983 World Cup win, the 2007 World T20 win and the recent 2010 World cup win has made cricket the holy sport in India. Indian Cricketing legends like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have re-written the rules in different formats of this beautiful game. Out of the many formats of cricket, the Twenty20 or T20 cricket is the most entertaining and enthralling one. It was originally introduced by the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as a desperate measure to increase attendances and spectators for county matches. Since then its fever took over the world cricket. The Indian Premier League or IPL is one prime example. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional league of Twenty20 cricket championship in India. It is the brain-child of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Mr Lalit Modi, then Chairman and Commissioner for IPL. It is currently supervised by Mr Rajeev Shukla, BCCI’s vice president. The world’s richest cricket tournament is based on the explosive Twenty20 match format. It has nine teams which consist of top national and international players from the cricketing world. Over a short span of time, its brand value has doubled from $2.99 to around US$4.13 billion. Much credit goes to the awesome fans as well who fill the stadiums with roars for Gayle storm, Steyn-gun and Captain Cool MSD. Who can forget the beautiful cheerleaders anyways! Just like the other sporting tournaments, this big-bash of Twenty20 cricket tournament is also incomplete without headlining controversies and scandals. From match betting to money laundering and spot fixing, IPL also has an equable amount of allegations and sleaze attached to its name. However, amidst all this, the madness of the IPL still rules and will dominate the Indian TRP and internet-o-sphere. The vibration of IPL is felt worldwide. Well, it’s more than just an entertainment, its cricketainment!

April/May 2013

The Sunrisers Hyderabad is a new entrant to the Indian Premier League in place of the former Hyderabadbased franchise Deccan Chargers, which was terminated due to financial issues. The nine teams all-together bought 37 cricketers from an extensive list of 108 players for $11.89 million this season. Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell fetched a whopping $1 million in the auction from Mumbai Indians. Similarly, the other expensive players of this tournament are Chris Morris ($625,000, Chennai Super Kings), Sachithra Senanayake ($625,000, Kolkata Knight Riders), Kane Richardson ($700,000, Pune Warriors India), Ajantha Mendis ($725,000, Pune Warriors India), Abhishek Nayar ($675,000, Pune Warriors India) and Thisara Perera ($675,000, Sunrisers Hyderabad)
