follow your passion, especially when everything in the universe is against you defines true courage. Mohan Gurung may not be your ideal hero, but behind the eccentric façade of tattoos is a humble man with modest beginnings who worked his way up in an unconventional career path. He goes against every stereotype that has been generated for tattoo clad men and women, becoming an inspiration for many youngsters planning on encroaching off track careers such as tattooing. Mohan Gurung is amongst the unsung heroes of Nepal who has made a name for himself and Nepal across many parts of the world. So, it is only befitting to name him The Nepali Man of the month. Another local inspiration that we pay tribute to in this issue is Dr. Pralad Yonzon. He was a man of principle, passion and unparalleled talent and devotion. There are only a handful of people in Nepal who have done so much in their field of expertise, but yet his untimely demise cut short a legacy that could have been so much greater. One thing we learnt from both Dr. Pralad Yonzon and Mohan Gurung’s story is that thinking outside the box can reap its rewards, as long as you follow your passion with determination. The creative team of RVL radio is all set to do exactly that. The first Nepali internet radio station with video, RVL is revolutionizing Nepali Radio once and for all. Also making waves, in a different sector are brothers Ashish and Ayush Rajbhandari. Urban Foods is the recent venture of the dynamic duo in a sector that happens to be our personal favorite: MEAT. Naturally, we had to dig in. With the summer rolling along at full speed now, we have an array of sandals and shades to keep you cool in more ways than one. If things work according to plan, you will hopefully be flashing your guns too with the bicep routine we have in store for you from our fitness expert Sachit Pradhan. Last but not the least; we have a new introduction to our mix: TNM Confidential, where we talk about Men’s favourite topic: SEX! It may not be admitted openly, but erectile dysfunction is a problem that plagues men around the world. If it hasn’t done so yet, it is pretty sure to stand out (or stand down) at one time or the other. If your Johnson (Ghanshyam more like) is well and rearing to go, we also have tips on getting your lady all fired up. Enough talk already; time to put your lips to better use. To top it all off, we have an interview with Joint Family Internationale (who have gone viral with their song Netaji) along with other reads that we hope you will have fun going through as much as we had making it. Cheers!

TNM TECHNOLOGY REVIEW

Samsung Galaxy S4 the most powerful phone with its share of hiccups The Galaxy S4 very may well be the most powerful phone in the world. Shipping with a 1080p Super AMOLED 5-inch screen, top-notch hardware, Android 4.2.2 and a crazy set of Samsung’s features and gestures all packed in a 8 mm thick phone. An admirable feat. Yet, it lacks that oomph factor that some might argue to not have been up to par. From a pure design perspective, Samsung lags slightly behind the competition with the likes of iPhone 5, HTC One and Lumia 920. The body is an improvment over the S3. The 5-inch 1080p display is seriously sharp and eye-catching. But that may not necessarily be a good thing. Because it uses an AMOLED panel, like many of Samsung’s phones, it displays more highly contrasted colors that emphasise the reds and oranges on screen. The camera trumps in daylight however it cannot still compete with the Lumia 920 in low-light. The GS4 runs the Android 4.2 and it is completely revamped making it look and feel like a completely different operating system. Jampacked with a galore of features, though not all productive, users will never be left bored. The market-topping specs contained within the same chassis (GS3) will have to face tough competition from HTC One, but we cannot deny the improvement either. The S4 may have been predictable, but it has been gaining popularity nonetheless.

G

I/O is Google’s biggest event of the year, which is a three-day marathon for the company and its developers to talk about the present and future of Google’s products. As expected, there was nothing revolutionary about the boatload of upgrades introduced, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a whole lot of very cool stuff.

10

Everything from new Android integrated development environment (IDE) to the ability to create GIF-like moving images with photos you’ve uploaded to Google+ was announced during the event. Further, there was a big range of announcements on Search, Maps, Music, Hangouts, Google Now and developer tutorials.

The latest version of Hangouts finally rolls out its various messaging services like Talk and Google+ Messenger into one, with Google Voice integration on the way. Hangouts is simply a messaging app for iOS, Android, Chrome and Gmail and just like Facebook Messenger, all your conversations stay in sync between all platforms. April/May 2013

Listed here are some of the most important and interesting takeaways from Google’s latest Keynote.

One chat room to rule them all

Pros: Solid performance, Crisp daylight photos, Extremely sharp screen Cons: Cheap build quality, Several impractical and halfbaked features

Auto-awesome your photo About a year ago, Google+ got revamped and it recently received yet another. Google+ has a new newspaper-style mosaic layout that spreads posts out over your entire page width, instead of having just one vertical stream. The new Google+ includes a new photo gallery that enhances, categorizes, and styles your photos. It can remove wrinkles, make duplicates disappear, and highlight the photos its algorithm thinks are best.

Google takes on Spotify Google Play Music All Access is Google’s entry into subscription-music. Quite a mouthful. Joining competitors like Spotify and Rdio, the service is now available with a free 30-day trial, offering ondemand music from within your browser, the Google Music Android app, and on mobile browsers. fb.me/TNM.Magazine

REVIEW

sony xperia z minimalist, beautiful and powerful. will it work out?

A ‘pure’ Galaxy S4 We didn’t see any refreshes for Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 but we got something totally unexpected. Samsung Galaxy S4 with stock Android 4.2. For many Android users who’ve been long clamoring for the ‘ultimate’ smartphone, this certainly may be it. It’ll be available in late June for $649.

Proclaimed boldly as the company’s most innovative design- swaying away from cheap plastics for tempered glass on the back and a precisely machined aluminum disc as the power button, Sony has invested a great deal of time and attention into this one device. It has all the requisite spec credentials – a 5” 1080p display, quad-core processor, 2 gigs of RAM for a flagship device. Oh, and did I tell you the phone is water and dust resistance? The minimalist and ultra-angular design is beautiful to look at, which it seems was prioritized over the ergonomics, making it less pleasing to hold. However, it is made up for thinness and minimal bezel. The 5-inch 1080p screen is disappointing to say the very least - color accuracy is well-calibrated and it is equally sharp (440ppi), but tilting the phone ever so slightly away from you quickly washes out the display. Another let down is the camera. The 13.1 MP sensor repeatedly produces a soft, grainy and less processed look which we hope will be resolved in a future update. On the software size, you get the least offensive of OEM customizations, yet the navigation is not as streamlined as in the competitors. The 1.5 GHz Snapdragon chip, however, breezes through anything and everything thrown at it. We applaud Sony for bringing water resistance and a unique design to the table. Particularly when the market seems to prefer the iPhone, Lumia and HTC’s One series when it comes to design. But, it all comes down to taste, and whether or not you are willing to stand by a few drawbacks.

revamped maps

google now gets smarter

Google has redesigned Maps experience for mobile and desktop making maps smarter, more visually compelling and increasingly personalized. The ground-up redesign on the desktop shows the map in full screen, integrates Google Earth and highlights important locations like your home and workplace.

Previously, it used to give you exactly what you are looking for, as soon as you asked. Now, you don’t even have to. With Google’s Knowledge Graphbased search continues to get smarter with every update, surfacing the most useful and relevant results for your queries, it now anticipates information you haven’t even asked for yet.

Android becomes a game console This is Google’s answer to Apple’s Game Center. Android’s game service includes achievements cloud saves, matchmaking, and leaderboards. It works across platforms, so developers can implement it on iOS and the web. fb.me/TNM.Magazine

If you search for the population of a country, as demonstrated in the keynote, it will pull up that information, along with a graph and stats on how that population compares with other countries. You can even compose emails or schedule reminders right from the search bar.

PROS: Beautiful design, Water resistance, Strong performance CONS: Dismal battery life, Poor viewing angles

ONE WORD

STUNNING LG’S MONSTROUS CURVED MIRACLE

The LG EA9800 is a 55-inch 1080p WRGB OLED set touted as the industry’s first curved ergonomic display with Cinema 3D support. The idea behind the curve is to reduce screen edge distortion by keeping the entire display surface the same distance from your eyes.

OLEDs inherently produce excellent contrast, viewing angles and colour saturation providing excellent overall image quality. OLED displays don’t use a backlight but rather each pixel is an individual LED light, which is why they display such excellent contrast.

With a slightly concave design, the point of these curved TVs is to provide a slightly more immersive viewing experience as the image wraps around to your periphery vision that little bit more. However, while at 55in, these TVs are large, you arguably need an even larger display before the image actually stretches into periphery territory. Unless you sit very close to it, of course.

The EA9800 weighs a measly 17 kg and is thinner than your average biscuit at a mind boggling 4.3 millimeters! The TV’s sound is provided by transparent film speakers that are cleverly stashed away within the see through stand and allows the screens unbroken curves to flow uninterrupted. You can pick one up for a cool $13,500. Source: http://osxdaily.com/2013/05/25/ios-7-rumors/

Black, White, & Flat Interface Elements

Simpler, Refined App Interfaces

Apple is all set to unveil a preview of iOS 7 for the first time on Monday, June 10 at the annual Worldwide Developer Conference. Though Apple has been typically tightlipped about any features or changes with the upcoming iOS update, some rumors have surfaced from traditionally reliable sources that help to paint a picture of what to expect. You’ll find that most of the current rumors surrounding iOS 7, suggest it will primarily be a visual overhaul, aiming to modernize the appearance of the core OS and default apps, and adding a few features or changes that users have long wanted. Here is a quick round up of all the rumored changes.

MICROSOFT XBOX ONE A cheat sheet for all of the news about the new console

A

s the Xbox 360 aged, rumors swirled around Microsoft’s next-generation console. Would we see an Xbox 720? An Xbox Infinity? A Nextbox? All those rumors turned out to be wrong, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One, set for release by the end of 2013. While the name was kept strictly under wraps, the Xbox One announcement confirmed many of the rumors we’d been hearing for months or even years. Those include live TV support, a new Kinect, upgraded specs, and a series of new next-generation games – but there are still a ton of questions Microsoft will need to answer about the One before gamers will have a complete picture of its newest console. Unlike Sony, which has kept the PS4’s hardware under wraps, Microsoft had no qualms about showing off the Xbox One. The machine resembles a shiny black set-top box with a slot-loading Blu-ray drive, and it only works in horizontal orientation. Microsoft and AMD partnered to make the custom 40-nanometer chip with an 8-core CPU and GPU that powers the One. It has 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, USB 3.0, and 802.11n Wi-Fi. The system isn’t just a game console, however. The One has good reason to look like a set-top box: it doubles as one. It features an HDMI pass-through so the console can sit between your cable or satellite operator’s set-top box and your TV. You can tune channels with your voice, use a TV guide directly from the Xbox, and multitask between gaming, TV, Skype, Internet Explorer, and more. It has also upgraded the Kinect’s camera. Using a 1080p wide-angle sensor, the camera can detect your gestures to help navigate Xbox One’s interface. It can also be used for Skype, and even detect your heartbeat. The Kinect’s final trick: recognizing the new Xbox controller for simple player syncing as well as adding “additional interaction” to games. The Xbox One’s UI is more of an evolution of what we’ve seen before on the 360 and Windows 8. The homescreen should look familiar, but everything now has a more home theater-friendly black look. Just like Windows 8, Microsoft showed how you can use “Snap Mode” to multitask on the Xbox One. For instance, you can watch a movie while leaving Internet Explorer open on the right side of the screen, or watch TV and play a game at the same time. Kinect-enabled voice and gesture controls allow you to instantly switch between these features. To handle all of this functionality, Microsoft is using three operating systems in the One: the Xbox OS, the Windows kernel, and a third that facilitates instant switching and multitasking.

TNM COLLECTABLES

T

o some people, a pen may just be something as trivial as a memento given away by companies. But they’re not all just writing sticks with bank names stamped on them. On the contrary, the pen is a highly valued collector’s item holding a lot of sentiment for many people. More commonly, it is the fountain pen that strikes the fancy of the pen aficionados. The reason as to why, is difficult to pin down. Maybe it’s the feel of it, or it just takes you back to a time and place where not everything was overrun by computers and internet, or maybe you want your signature to look badass. Whatever the reason, fountain pens have been a popular collector’s item and a great gift filled with sentiments. For those pen fanatics out there, here are a few fountain pens that really struck our fancy.

Fully Loaded: Montblanc Meisterstück Classique Platinum Fountain Pen This Meisterstück features a black glossy barrel and cap, simple platinum-plated clip with an engraved individual serial number, platinumplated rings on the barrel and cap and a trim where a wider middle band stands out engraved with the Montblanc brand name - “Montblanc Meisterstück Pen”. If it wasn’t for the emblem on top (and the price tag), an inexperienced user might have been excused to think that this is just another fountain pen. Price on Request Available at: Swiss International, Durbarmarg

On a flexible budget: Sheaffer Valor With the cap on, the pen has only one Sheaffer reference point, the oversized White Dot centered above its very large and unique clip. The Valor is a rather large pen. Capped, it’s 150 mm long, uncapped it’s 126.5 mm. This is not a short pen. The section is long enough to accommodate a variety of gripping preferences, being 42 mm long from the section joint to the back of the inlaid nib. Compared to the Valor’s length, its diameter is more normally sized and is part of what gives the Valor its sleek look. If you are looking for value for money, this is the deal. Class, style and functionality stored into one pen without burning too large of a hole in your wallet. Price: Rs.17900 onwards Available at: City Centre, Bishal Bazaar, Options, Bhatbhateni Supermarkets and Departmental Stores, Pleasure Fragrance, Caligraphy Center, Gorkha Department Store

Thanks to the roads in our city that are currently under heavy maintenance, I have spotted a three-wheeled ‘Safa Tempo’ toppled over on its side like a turtle flipped over on its shell, on more than one occasion. Forgive me for being so insensitive, but it was hilarious to witness this side-splitting sight. Of course, the joke would have been on me had I been the one squished inside with a bunch of strangers. Add to this the crazy downpours this May, and the roads have practically turned into a slip and slide affair for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Not to forget the occasional wading through the flooded streets when the Gods decide to cry out too loud. But our sorrows don’t end with the demolished roads and rubble scattered around, which we have bitched and moaned enough about in our previous issue. Let’s take our mobile network system. Has it not successfully made even the classiest of personalities contort their faces enough, as they repeatedly yell into their cell phone receivers? In fact, many mobile users have had longer conversations with the overly courteous default apologies from the network services than with their mother on the phone. No woman has probably apologized to anybody so much like the female voice who repeatedly apologises for not being able to get you through the network. Consider yourselves lucky if you can get hold of the person you are trying to reach on the cell phone at the

fb.me/TNM.Magazine

first go. There have been times when we realize that we have been holding our phone to our ear, waiting for a dial tone for longer than usual, only to discover that our phone network has betrayed us once again. On the off chance that you do get connected, you might have to spend half the conversation trying to decipher what the other person is saying. Or it’s usually the one-way conversation in which though the receiver hears you, nothing gets over to your side of sense of hearing. The actual reason for such bad connection still befuddles most of us. Logically thinking, the growing number of mobile phone users might be to blame. Research shows that there are more people who have access to mobile phones than those with access to proper sanitary bathrooms in the country. Statistically, somewhere out there is a person squatting to lay some cable in the middle of the field with a phone to the side of his/her head. With the amazing rates and offers of ownership that are given out by service providers, it isn’t surprising that every Tom Dick and Hari Prasad now has access to mobile phones. The services they have been bringing to the table are admirable. Taking the other services in the country into consideration, one wouldn’t be completely wrong to at least applaud the mobile network companies on their endeavours, one more than the other. The initiatives being taken to bring in new services and innovations is a good start. But when it ultimately comes down to network accessibility, there are still acres of room for improvement. Many would call attention to the fact that distributing the services to a mass which the providers cannot sustain is the core problem here. However, that is certainly no excuse for the designated providers

of the service to cower behind. It’s high time the service providers stepped their game up. The current service we have begs to be highly refined in term of connectivity and accessibility. Not being able to connect to the desired contact point due to ‘congested networks’, especially when stuck in a crisis situation, isn’t really one of the most comforting moments in life. Wouldn’t we really appreciate it if we could enjoy the gift of clear conversations over the phone? It would be nice to go a day without feeling the urge to smack your phone so far back into your own skull, that you could post a picture of your brain on Facebook. Hello? Hello! Have I got through clear?

ased on the real life of Chris Gardener, “The Pursuit of Happyness” is an inspirational film which shows how a homeless salesman turns into a multimillionaire stockbroker. It shows how a struggling and poor American salesman pursues his dream of becoming a stockbroker while he and his son live on the streets. As he is struggling, his wife also leaves him but Chris’ firm hope of landing a job always motivates him. The life-changing struggle of a once estranged salesman is depicted perfectly in the backdrop of hassling America. Will Smith who plays the character Chris Gardener co-stars with his young son, Jaden Christopher Smith in the movie. Both Smith and Jaden have given an aweinspiring performance. Gardner (Will Smith) not only fills the role of a goal-oriented professional but also as a caring and loving father. Throughout every struggle in the movie he always maintains enough composure and places his son before himself. He embarks on a bold journey to achieve the happiness with his 5-year old son by his side. The movie shows how strong will and determination can change a person’s life. This movie has some great life-lesson portrayed in it. Similarly, it also introduces some great financial lessons. Here are a few important life and financial lessons from this movie:

20

JUNE 2013

Chris encountered many setbacks. Whether it was the doctor who rejected the machine or that unpaid intern at the Stock Brokerage Company, he was still willing to push himself further. He lost his car, his wife left him, he became broke and homeless but he never complained and questioned his responsibility. While doing his unpaid internship, Christ used to spend his weekends by selling the Bone Density Scanner machine. Despite all of these, he never wasted his time. He used to study at night and also care for his son at the same time. His work ethic was second to none because he was willing to do anything to make life better. If you are experiencing major setbacks in your life, remember that there is always a hope. The cruelties of life will knock you time and again but you always need to get up and keep moving forward. Regardless of how unrealistic it seems or how hopeless the circumstances look, you should always push yourself. If you quit then, sorry everything will fade away from your hopes to dreams.

The cruelties of life will knock you time and again but you always need to get up and keep moving forward.

3.

Be resilient and put your excuses away

1.

Identify your passion What fuelled Chris Gardner’s positivity in the movie was his passion for his son and his dream of becoming a stockbroker. His wife also leaves him because she thoughts the stock broker internship was a waste of time and Chris won’t get through it. But, Chris’s quest for providing a better life for his son and for himself helped him to achieve his goals from a failed Bone Density Scanner salesman to a stockbroker. You also need to identify your passion because only your interests can activate you to achieve your goals. In order to succeed, you should aim high because even if you won’t reach to the stars, you’ll land yourself in the sky. So, ALWAYS identify your passion!

In the movie, Chris never makes any excuses in spite of how difficult the situation turns out to be. He was supposed to give an interview for the intern position next day but the night before, he gets arrested for unpaid parking tickets and had to spend the night in jail. He could’ve avoided the interview as he wasn’t appropriately dressed but, he keeps his excuses away and shows up for the interview in a paint-stain cloth. At times you feel like you are stuck at an impossible position and can’t reach to your dreams. Everything will start looking hopeless. You come up with many valid excuses not to chase your dreams. People try to discourage you. Even if the odds are too high, don’t let pride and the opinion of people stop you. You have to learn to ignore these excuses and stay optimistic. If you don’t try, you’ll never succeed. fb.me/TNM.Magazine

4.

Believe in yourself It’s never late to start something new. Chris Gardner was already in his 40’s when he started the internship program at the stock brokerage firm. He knew the fact that other people competing for the position were half his age but that didn’t stop him. He never stopped from believing in himself. He won the internship position and went on to become a successful stock broker and even opened his own brokerage company later. What matters most in life is your self-belief. Believe in yourself even when others don’t believe in you. Don’t let opinions of other people hinder your goal. Start believing in your abilities and don’t give up until you reach your goal. Age doesn’t matter, what matters are your drive and willingness to work hard. One great example would be KFC. Had the retired Army colonel thought that he was too old to start a business then, there would be no KFC.

5.

Maintain good relationships Chris Gardner’s interpersonal skills were excellent. Despite facing many setbacks, he always maintained a positive attitude with his potential employers and clients during his internship period. He showed gratitude to the people who believed in himself. He achieved his goals because he always cultivated good relationships with so many valuable clients. He got the big break when he got into the exclusive box stand during an American football match. Show gratitude to the people who always believed in you because these people will give you the foundation. You should extend common courtesy and a helpful attitude to your potential clients and employers.

6.

7.

A decision can make your life either difficult or very good. Some decisions, like Will’s decision to invest in the medical scanner made his life very difficult. However, his decision to jump into stock broking however made his life much better. The point is always avoid making bad decisions because investing in something you do not understand is never a smart decision.

On his 1st day of internship, he was given a list of Fortune 500 companies with phone numbers of potential clients and asked to cold call them. When Chris starts calling his clients, he derives a financial mantra crucial for the successful completion of the internship program. He infers that:

Make good decisions

fb.me/TNM.Magazine

Success = Hard Work + Luck

X number of Calls equals X number of Prospects. X number of Prospects equals X number of Customers and X number of Customers equals X number of Dollars. This mantra later aids him in landing a permanent job position in that stock brokerage company.

R

adio Nepal had an official transmission of 4 hours 30 minutes in 1951. Now that’s when radios started out in Nepal. Through the decades, radio broadcasting flourished into a household name for the old and the young. The 90’s especially saw the radio’s popularity reach apex heights as pop music created waves around the world with the likes of JLO, Shaggy, Ricky Martin, Back Street Boys and so many others on the driver’s seat. Although the intrusion by television and increasing popularity of the internet dampened the reign of the radio, it still has a loyal fan following. There are still a good number of people who regularly tune in into their favourite radio station.

S

what is rvl radio?

o before you start dismissing radio as an outdated broadcasting platform, let us introduce you to the pioneers of the fast growing trend of internet radio on our side of the world – Revolution Radio. Despite what everyone says, there are people out there who are still very passionate about radio and a few of them have actually made it their mission to keep radio alive. RVL Radio started off at Manoj KC’s room when Ashish and Prasan Syangden (famously known as the Rhythm Brothers in the Nepali Radio scene) came over for a recording. FM had reached a point where it had begun to stagnate, and the trio felt that it was time to target a niche group through the modern internet radio. After a survey with NTC showed 6,50,000 internet users in

Nepal, they thought internet would be a good way to get to their desired target. Passionate and with a huge experience under their belt, they decided to take matters seriously and start out the studio (Much to Manoj’s consent who was starting to worry about his privacy after the guys were having ideas about using his room as the studio). Presenters were not a problem either. In fact, they never actually had to post job vacancies. With veterans like Yanik Shrestha volunteering to join along with other passionate presenters, RVL was up and running in no time. Purely creativity driven, the voices in RVL radio bring you the raw truth as they are anything but commercially run. They make full use of their freedom of speech. RVL is now basically a global platform for anyone and everyone who loves radio and would like to keep the radio-hood alive for the present generation and the new.

what’s on air ?

why r v l?

U

sually, when you tune into the radio, you are either left at the mercy of listening to religious hymns played during the early hours, forced to listen to a boring program being aired or have to bear through the usual news updates. Especially for the Nepali locals abroad, who are sometimes forced to listen to those hymns half drunk after a party because our mornings are after hours there. What if you wanted the freedom to choose? So something had to be done about it. Keeping both the local and Nepalese crowd abroad in mind, RVL came up with this revolutionary internet radio platform to offer nonstop entertainment round the clock, with the listeners having the freedom to choose through their genre of music or the program being aired.

T

here are practically no boundaries as to what can and cannot be done at RVL Radio, as long as they are within ethical grounds. The presenters basically have the freedom to come up with their inventive shows. There are creative and innovative shows like ‘Covered’ where Nepali internet (YouTube) prodigies who record their own songs or covers are played. The shows that they bring to the listeners are a little out of the box, and that’s putting it lightly in the context of Nepal. There are other shows like ‘Girls on Top’ and

“ RVL r e v o l u t i o n i z e s t h e r a d i o i n nepal with its first audio and video internet radio station”

‘Turn it On’, which shed light on less openly discussed topics on sex and human sexuality. Blessed with an arsenal of immensely creative crew members, RVL basically shuns the commercial pattern and believes in creating new markets instead. RVL radio also brings to its users a list of variety of musical genres (Rock, Pop, Dance, Blues, Nepali and Love Songs) they can choose to listen to, if they are not interested in the on air programs. Apart from that they also have an innovative concept of the Rev Cam.

What is the

RevCam?

T

he RevCam is a webcam that allows viewers to see the presenters present the shows live. The inquisitive viewers get a chance to see the radio station and how it actually is behind the scenes, while others get to see candid moments where presenters absentmindedly pick their nose on live camera. More importantly, the RevCam makes RVL a radio show that you can watch. Apart from the presenters, the RevCam has also featured shows like Jazzmandu, Fashion week, etc live which especially gives Nepalese people abroad a chance to enjoy what’s happenings in Nepal.

TNM COVER STORY

‘An inspirational story of an unorthodox achiever who went against the current and overcame the odds to become the biggest name in the tattooing scene of Nepal By: Ankit Shakya | Phtography: Shashank Pradhan

JUNE 2013

He went against the currents, and stood his ground when everything and everyone around told him to do otherwise.

From an early start in life, most of us were expected or even forced to become a doctor, engineer or a pilot. Anything else was deemed mediocre. Though this narrow perception for the future is gradually changing now, things were no different for Mohan Gurung while growing up in the 1970’s. But beating all odds, he did a decent job of flowing against the tide and debunking stereotypes. He went against the currents, and stood his ground when everything and everyone around told him to do otherwise. Body clad with tattoos and piercings as well, he contradicts everything that people negatively stereotype about people with body art and modification. Today, he has it made - an underdog who achieved so much in a profession where few would tread on. After more than a decade of struggle in successfully running his continuously expanding business, he has now established himself as an acclaimed tattoo artist. This is the story about his artistic journey. fb.me/TNM.Magazine

JUNE 2013

31

Like most artists tend to be, Mohan Gurung grew up as the quiet introvert who sketched jaw dropping art work on the back of notebooks in class and nobody even knew about it. With traces of brilliant creativity seen right from a very young age, it was pretty apparent that he would not be pursuing a life behind the desk. Not that his tattoo career was too apparent in the early years either. Mohan Gurung recalls, “Surprisingly, I was not always into tattoos. While growing up, I did come across the traditional tattoos donned by the older folks. But that did not particularly tickle my fancy. However, I had a very keen interest in music. It was probably my exposure to the beautiful tattoos flaunted by bands like Guns and Roses and Ozzy Ozbourne, which ignited the initial interest in tattoos.” Come teenage years, like most parents, Mohan’s parents too began to fear that he would stray off into wrong tracks in Nepal. So consequently, he found himself in Korea in the early 90’s. “It was there that I got to try my hand at tattooing for the first time after hanging out with a tattoo artist from Holland. So I spent my days not just working in Korea, but tattooing friends and strangers as well, who were willing to let me experiment on their bodies and get inked for free. 32

Money was never too big of a factor for me, and it might never be. I am dedicated to this profession solely because it is my biggest obsession.

However, despite the fact that I could have had a much easier life in Korea, my heart was always set on returning to Nepal.” Mohan Gurung never really liked leaving his country and it was only a matter of time before he decided that he would not spend the rest of his life away from Nepal. Not being the type of person to gather a considerable saving, he came back home with little savings, having spent most of what he earned. Sadly, he did not receive a lot of support from his friends and family when he came home empty handed. At a time when most youngsters were expected to go abroad to earn riches, the reactions were definitely not coming out of the blue. It stung Mohan to receive this rusty reception. Nevertheless, there was a silver lining to the dark cloud. Mohan Gurung had discovered his passion and was all set to create a legacy for the future. Tattoos began playing a larger role in his life and although he was yet to earn any money out of it, his work was slowly gaining recognition in his hometown Pokhara. “As a result, my friends encouraged me to start my own tattoo parlor. Needless to say, my parents were not really keen about my obsession with permanently inking fb.me/TNM.Magazine

designs into other’s bodies. So the only financial help they were willing to give me was to go abroad for work. But thanks to one of my very good friends and another, a close sister, I was finally able to open up a small tattoo shop in Mulchowk, Pokhara.” Still unsure about the new venture, Mohan would tirelessly work at the shop, either on his customers or his sketches. At that particular moment in time, Nepal was going through a fashion wave of tribal tattoos, where plain black ink was filled into tribal designs. But Mohan was delving into something more complicated - tattoos that involved shading and colors. This was a different from what everyone else was doing and it gradually began to increase in popularity. One thing leading to another, Mohan Gurung soon found himself in the heart of the country, Kathmandu. Even so, it would still be a long time before tattooing garnered its popularity. Tattoos were still scorned upon by the masses and it was the norm to keep an eye out for tattooed miscreants. Babu Raja and Karma were the only two tattoo artists at that time in the city, but they too disappeared from the scene soon after. With no competition in sight, Mohan

Gurung set out to do what he did best and began creating a name for himself in the tattoo industry of Nepal. After countless tattoos, learning experiences abroad, visiting as many tattoo conventions as he possibly could and making more friends than foes, Mohan Gurung now owns and operates the best known name amongst tattoo parlors in Nepal – Mohan’s Tattoo Inn. However, Mohan Gurung is more of an artist at heart rather than much of a business man. Despite being the biggest entrepreneur in the tattoo scene of Nepal, he never believed in running after money. A true man of passion, he is determined to stay loyal to his work, the beautiful world of body art. “Money was never too big of a factor for me, and it might never be. I am dedicated to this profession solely because it is my biggest obsession. Since my work is my hobby, I end up sketching and tattooing even in my free time. But people rather accuse me of being a workaholic and working too hard for money. Not too fond of arguments and confrontations, I just smile back and move on. Even when I go out of the country, I go for tattoo conventions because that is my definition JUNE 2013

33

and he admits to doing a lot of hard work. Even though Mohan Gurung seems like the ideal person to sidestep the obstacles and problems that come his way, there are things that wound more than others. It is particularly difficult to deal with disappointment when it comes from someone close to you. “Taking on an unorthodox career has its drawbacks, and lack of support from family and relatives may be one of the biggest setbacks. Expecting full support from everyone while venturing into an offbeat career like tattooing may have been a long shot, especially when body modification wasn’t as openly accepted as it is today. So if you are going to pursue an unconventional profession based on your passion, you need to be good at it. Similarly, my son is now following on my footsteps and I am proud that he is showing signs of becoming a good tattoo artist. I have been keeping a close eye on him and he is on the verge of learning the art.” Nonetheless, the inked pioneer of the tattoo industry has come a long way in an industry that had to struggle to be taken seriously. The heretical nature of the occupation must have been even more daunting in the 90’s than it is today. Mohan Gurung is a fish out of water in more ways than one. In a world where people strive day and night for money, Mohan Gurung works hard because he likes what he does and constantly wants to improve. He chooses to draw sketches as opposed to forcefully socializing in parties.

of fun and leisure. This is what I love. If I wasn’t into tattooing I wouldn’t probably even be in Nepal. I’d be doing a menial job abroad.”

What he has done for and in the tattoo industry is admirable. But apart from his work as an artist, it is his personality that sets him apart. His polite demeanor forces even the most extreme of stereotypes to overlook the tattoos adorning his skin and respect the person that he is. Mohan Gurung is rightfully the face of the tattoo scene of Nepal, and he has been doing a splendid job of turning negative stereotypes to positive admiration for the past two decades. Now, married, a father to two children and approaching 40, he shows no signs of slowing down. When asked if he had plans of retiring anytime soon, he spontaneously replies, “I guess, I’ll continue tattooing till I die.”

He started off on this journey, not with a set destination, but with the determination to do his best in his field of work. A humble man, Mohan still feels that there is so much more to learn as a tattoo artist and as a person. But success is a two headed coin and the other side always brings along darker aspects. In more than two decades in the business, Mohan Gurung has gone through tough times and tackled tougher people in his own ways. Unlike the usual stereotype of a tattooed person, his perception and ways of handling negativity is in fact monk like. “The way an individual approaches negativity, depends on that particular individual. If you are calm and peaceful, you will go about doing things in a peaceful manner. But if you have a darker angrier side within yourself, it will be difficult to see the world any differently.” It was a struggle to get to where he is today 34

tattoo removal: Permanent is too Strong a Word

E

“ Think a thousand times before you ink yourself because, chances are, the shame and regret will galvanize your pride for the once thought masterpiece “

verybody wants to unleash their inner rebel from time to time, break the rules and have pride in doing so. There are several ways in which people lash out, and maybe the hormones are to blame, but the adolescent years is when people act out. Getting inked is one of those things that people tend to do at the spur of the moment. Due to the permanent nature of tattoos, the importance of thinking it over cannot be emphasized enough. Think a thousand times before you ink yourself because, chances are, the shame and regret will galvanize your pride for the once thought masterpiece. Inevitably, some of us some learn it the hard way. Whether it is a memento to a romance gone sour, a barbwire around the arm or the lion your friend etched into your skin with a pin and ink; it is not unlikely to regret getting a tattoo. Yes, cover-ups may be an alternative to alter the design of the tattoo but sometimes it would be in your best interest if you remove the tattoo completely. Well don’t panic if you have a tattoo to get rid of, there are a handful of clinics and hospitals around town for your salvation.

“There’s always a story behind a tattoo removal, some have powerful sentiments behind them while some are immature decisions being regretted.”

Among some of the removal facilities in the country, TNM team consulted with Dr. Lalan Khatiwada from Nepal Skin Hospital. Dr. Lalan Khatiwada begins,

Tattoo removal involves an extensive process of laser treatments. Moreover, the laser treatment varies from patient to patient depending on the age, size, and

Basically, there are two ways for removing a tattoo. One can opt for the old school plastic cosmetic surgery or the modern way of laser surgery. The plastic surgery includes a procedure in which the entire skin layer of the inked portion is replaced by a new one (sounds lovely, doesn’t it?) whereas the laser simply surgery destroys the ink from the skin (not particularly pleasant either). People opting for plastic surgery for removal is rare, clients prefer laser surgery when it comes to tattoo removal. Dr. Khatiwada, “Normally 4 to 5 people visit us in a month. But the hospital receives overwhelming crowds of about 150 clients during the recruit season of the army and police”. Clients especially applying for British army and Singaporean police are seen at large. This is mainly because a tattoo will make them ineligible for the recruitment, shattering their dreams to become a ‘LAHURE’.

type of tattoo (home-made or done by a professional). Other factors that come into play are the color of the patient’s skin, the depth to which the tattoo pigment extends etc. A client may have to follow up for 3 to 12 months for several removal sessions. Likewise, depending on the location of the tattoo and the pain threshold of the patient, the physician may decide on to using some form of anesthesia (topical anesthesia cream or painkiller injections) at the site of the procedure. From word of mouth, we can assure you, the process is no walk in the park. In fact, people say that the pain is worse than getting the tattoo done in the first place. The ordeal is not over yet, the client must protect the skin from the sun because it affects pigmentation and as a result they might end up with dark patches. One last thing, removal of tattoos does not come cheap. The cost for removing a tattoo ranges from about Rs2000 to Rs15000 per session. So before you get yourself inked, be sure of what you want. You’ll be saving yourself from pain, some cash and even from potential scarring. As the old adage goes, better be safe than sorry. However, there is no point crying over spilt milk, so if the woman whose name is inked across your chest is currently canoodling with another man, you can always start over with a clean slate.

FACTS AND MYTHS ABOUT

TATTOOS Not everything you’ve heard about tattoos is a hundred percent correct.

M

ajority of the new generation apart, there will be a lot of people that will fill your ears with a load bizarre hokum every time you bring up the subject of tattooing. In the past, some tattooed people have not done that great of a job in creating a good reputation for tattoos… concurred, and that is probably why people “suggest” anyone from refraining to get inked. That is probably where these crazy myths pop up from. Much like an elongated game of terribly played Chinese whispers, the myths span out to become some really stupid concepts. However, there are some things that are worth listening to. Just to make things easier, we’ve separated the hits from the misses so that you are no longer under false impressions about tattoos.

You’re going to regret it when you’re 80.(Miss) You’re probably not going to like a lot of things about yourself when you’re 80. In fact, the tattoo should be the last of your concerns. You’re 80, you can walk around with a tattoo of ACDC smack dab across your forehead and still not care about what the world has to say. We reckon a tattoo at that age is a good idea, especially after making it through 79 years of surviving in the harsh world.

You can always get a bad tattoo lasered off.(Miss) Yes, laser tattoo removal is increasing in popularity, but there are a few strings attached. First off, it hurts… a lot! Second, it is pretty expensive, and for what it costs you will most likely be left with a pretty visible scar. More importantly, laser removal of tattoos depends on the quality of the ink used in the tattoo. High quality ink may not completely vanish from your skin.

Don’t get any water on your tattoo (Partly True).

Making a tattoo makes you “hip/ cool/gangster” etc.(Miss)

You must not “soak” a new tattoo, but gentle hand-washing of it is necessary to remove harmful bacteria from the healing tattoo. When you shower, simply apply a little extra coating of ointment to the tattoo and avoid direct shower spray on it. Blot off excess ointment when you’re done bathing.

No it doesn’t. And if you think it does, we’re afraid there isn’t much in this world that can make you “hip/cool/gangster”

Angels will exchange your tattoos for a wish when you pass on to the other side.(Highly Unlikely) Not everyone may be aware of this, but it is believed that tattoos can be exchanged for wishes when you pass on to the other side. Although we cannot completely deny this myth, we do find it highly unlikely, but it is a matter of belief in this issue.

Your tattoos will lose its form when your body goes through a transformation.(Miss) Losing or gaining weight is a huge body transformation. Unless the tattoo is too detailed to begin with, losing weight will not change the look of your tattoo on a shrinking body too significantly. Lines that run too closely together could theoretically blend and cause a distorted image, but this is a very rare occurrence. Similar to weight loss – even significant weight gain only causes minimal changes in each body area. The problem with weight gain, though, is the possibility of stretch marks. If you get stretch marks in an area where you have a tattoo, it will ruin your ink. The deeper the stretch marks, the worse the damage – and it is irreversible

You can contract HIV/AIDs and other diseases from tattooing. (Miss)

Tattoos will remain with you forever, as it is.(Miss)

Unless you are getting tattooed by a shady dude under a staircase of a bar, chances of contracting diseases via tattoos are minimal. As long as the artist makes sure that the tattoo parlor is hygienic and clean and fresh new needles are used for every sitting, there is hardly any reason to worry.

Tattoos may not be as permanent as you think. It is likely that the tattoo will begin to fade as time passes specially due to reasons like too much sun exposure, improper healing etc. There are measures that will slow down the fading to some extent, but it may not be completely unavoidable.

fb.me/TNM.Magazine

Tattooed people are hooligans.(Miss) Blindly generalizing tattooed people as hooligans is like assuming that a Maruti will begin to run like a Ferrari as soon as you paint it red. Stereotyping is a common habit amongst us all and eradicating it right away is not possible, but now is a good time to start. Read up on Mohan Gurung to get the process started.

Declaring your love through a tattoo is a good idea.(Miss) It may seem like a good idea at the spur of the moment, but a romantic spontaneous declaration of your undying love may make you want to cut your skin off your bones when you sadly do break up. We’re not saying that you will break up, but no matter how much in love you are, there are chances that things may turn sour.

Getting a tattoo will make you look better.(Depends) It actually depends on the eyes of the beholder. Some people like tattoos and find it makes one look better, even a turn on. Others may take you as a convict with the potential of pulling a knife on them any second.

Avoid working out immediately after getting a tattoo.(Hit) Try to avoid exercises that pull and stretch your newly tattooed skin. For example, if you got a new tattoo on your chest, certain weightlifting moves may be irritating. Regardless of the type of exercise you do, apply your moisture product and cover the area with a bandage to reduce irritation and abrasion. Shower right after your workout so you can wash off any sweat and salt that can be potentially irritating. Finally, avoid contact sports if possible until you are fully healed to reduce the risk of skin abrasion. But it is a good idea to wait at least 48hours before working out after getting a tattoo. what

MEN SHOULD KNOW the

PRINCE CHARMING SYNDROME A

We were not boys and girls, we were just children. Playing with little dolls or air guns (there is no gender for toys), crying out for ice-creams, popping in a quick candy on a tummy ache, climbing trees when our parents warned us not to. Basically, living your life on the fly.

on time, try and make good friends, how to sit, how to walk, not to fidget, not to attract unnecessary attention along with other rules and regulations that comes with adolescence. The reason: you are now old enough to understand. Somehow, even those things seem fine till you realize that lo behold, even running is all of a sudden a very tasking thing to do. You hear the boys tsk and see them nudge and snigger, and initially we don’t really understand why and let me clear it out to you mister, it is quite disturbing to us when we do find out why.

And when puberty hits you like a truck, a lot of changes come with it. Not just physical bodily changes, but societal, dayto-day changes as well. You are taught to compromise, be patient, come home

So while we women try to figure out the changes in our bodies and understand the changes, we also have to try and cope with the sudden change in societal perception. I am not saying men don’t have to cope

s a little girl, I remember being extremely competitive. I also remember being the only girl with 4 cousin brothers. So, I remember growing up sharpening bamboo sticks for arrows, tag wrestling and playing Rambo at our gardens.

with changes, they do, and it’s just that men need help to understand the changes in women, so I’m here to help you out. Growing up is difficult anywhere, growing up in a conservative environment where information is fiercely protected is even more difficult. Add to that our cultural norms and we Nepali women grow up accepting everything without question. To exemplify, “ Why can’t I go out at night?” “Why can’t I wear that dress?” “ Why can’t go out on that weekend trip?” “ Why do I have to speak softly?” “ Why? Why? Why??” The reasons of course are varied and they come to light later as we grow up, but for now to sum it up, let’s just say the world is a big bad place. Unfortunately while we are growing up, we are handed out one handbook with 5 words in them, “ Because you are a girl.” And that’s how most of us grow up, with the tagline -“ I am a girl!” and with that starts the Prince Charming syndrome. The Prince Charming syndrome as I like to say it, is a girl’s wistful dreaming that one day a man will come and sweep her off her feet and support her to live in the way she’d most like to. I’d like to think that it isn’t just women but men who dream for that as well. To find someone who fits into our lives and accepts us just the way we are, for better and for worse. One might think it is about a man fulfilling every desire of a woman and some might argue women are most capable of doing it themselves. I would never argue with that, a woman is most certainly capable of achieving all she wants to in life. All I am saying is that even the most independent woman would probably dream about her Prince Charming- her partner-in-crime, someone who would unquestioningly love and cherish her, support her dreams and ideas and give her the freedom to find her path and reach her goals. It is nothing

Support, whether financial, emotional or motivational, depends totally on your lady and her priorities and desires. Hence, while we women go through life with restrictions and unexplained answers, tumultuous on its own, we also secretly pine with the desire of being a child once again. The desire to run free, act like a spoilt brat and get away with it, go wild with our crazy creative ideas, make new friends (male or female), learn about different cultures, see the city at night time, eat ice-cream at 1 in the morning --just the quiet desire to freshen up our lives and to not do all of this alone hidden from prying eyes but with a feeling

of immense glory and pride to know that your man supports you all the way. Get to know how to trust each other. See the world through your and her eyes. A little harmless change is always rejuvenating. Make new friends, try a new cuisine, dance with her in the rain, or at least watch her with a towel ready in your hands. If you love her let her know she is accepted as she is. With that, the next time your girl comes up to you with a silly idea or an actual genius idea, something that won’t end with the two of you behind bars, just do it. Be a child with her, see the world with renewed wonderment, BE her Prince Charming. Tell her she can do it and if she asks you why? Tell her, because you are a girl. You are my girl!

Porch swings A porch swing is a comforting and relaxing place to sit and watch the sunset or just enjoy the gentle breeze and quiet of a summer day. When designing a porch swing, try to create a design that inspires this mood.

Modern Sun Deck Seating

Wrought Iron Seating Wrought iron furniture is becoming commonplace in contemporary interior dĂŠcor, especially at home, because of the space it creates, durability, stylishness and even elegance that compliments contemporary designs and timelessness that adds charm to living environment. Decorative metal items for the outdoors like wrought-iron fences and furniture can take garden visitors back to another era with its sophisticated, sleek modern vibe.

Making the most out of your backyard space will extend the living area of your home. Sun Deck Seating is a wonderful way to make the outdoors useful for guests, dining and relaxing. Plan your design before throwing the patio together to attain the most pleasing, rewarding results. Look at the style of your house. A traditional or formal-looking house will blend in nicely with an older look; a patio with classic brick and aged looking furniture, for example. A contemporary styled house will be set off well by smooth, simple clean lines. A cottage garden might look more charming with a small patio ringed with a decorative picket fence.

S a nd a l s

s we had discussed boats and moccasins in our earlier issue: We now add-on a “notspring-not-summer”, new fetish in fashion “the sandals”! Yes- sandals, you heard it right. For those who think sandals are too girly, this might just help you get your facts right. This airy footwear adds a breeze to your comfort as we can already feel the heat waves hitting in sooner than expected.

1. S a c k t he Soc k s : Did we mention that you should NEVER wear socks with sandals? Unless you really don’t care what women think - don’t wear socks with sandals.

Every guy needs a pair of sandals at the ready for the last minute weekend getaway.

2 . C onsider ge t t ing a P edic ure :

Hence, it is downright necessary for a modern male to know about his footwear options. So here are a few picks for this summer which hopefully will keep the comfort intact with style so that getting off on the right foot doesn’t have to be hard – neither does finding the right footwear that fits your style and need.

Keep your toenails well groomed. Your razorsharp eagle claws are not attractive.

3 . Be generous to in v e s t: Don’t skimp on cheap footwear. Invest on good quality: you will know the difference especially when your feet, knees, and ankles might just thank you for the feel of it.

You can avoid the common faux pas once you understand the types of sandals & the “how to” and “where to” wear them issues.

4. Bre a k i t in:

There are incredible sandals to choose from in many types of leather. Men’s sandals in leather today run the gamut from textured and rugged, like sporty wraparound sandals, to the smooth, minimal look of leather slide-ons. Hence, investing on a good pair of leather sandals is the best way to look dressy this summer.

Consider breaking in a new pair of sandals at home before you take it out on a stroll.

5 . A n E x t r a Pa ir:

1. Thong sandals: The thong is actually a traditional sandal with a single toe strap that goes between the big and second toe. Other than their simple looks: men’s thong sandals are moving upmarket in style, quality and price. They can be worn around the house or around town for errands, also at some casual backyard barbeques and can be well carried off with shorts, jeans, tanks, t-shirts and bathing trunks for a casual look.

sure send you back to the times of Emperor Nero of Rome, who had gladiators fight to death in the arena of his own amusement. But, of course that is just the feel of the high rise leather straps. You can pair a brown leather gladiator sandal with a pair of khakis that you can roll up for a more relaxed look. Simpler gladiators with lesser straps can be pulled off with simple neutral color polo’s and tailored shorts for a much casual look.

2. Slide-on sandals: It is a shoe that creates a feeling of utter ease in the man who’s wearing them. They have undergone a revolution over the past few years. Generally defined as having one or two straps that go across the top of the foot, today’s slide sandals come in many styles and forms. The ones with smooth leather and a foamy sole are best picks for utter ease and wearability.

5. Dress sandals: They are usually high-end designer styles and built for fashion over comfort. While most are comfortable and durable, they would place form over function in the list of priorities. Men’s dress sandals come from a variety of top designer names and are high in price range. Designer dress sandals are a sophisticated way to keep your feet as cool as your company.

3. Ruggedly masculine leather sandals: These shoes have chunky leather straps to go with a textured athletic shoe sole, for shoes that will really help get places in a hurry. These are the kind of sandals that can be worn to hike up a sandy hill. These sandals should usually only be worn with a T-shirt and jeans or shorts. These sandals are also designed to go with hiking and trail gear, like cargo pants and shorts and button down hiking or camp shirts.

So, overall being both versatile and very wearable, these look great when paired with a pair of smart chinos and a loose fit shirt or even polo’s to look the part but also retain comfort when the heat is intense. Some styles can also be worn with jeans and casual slacks. Whereas simpler ones can even be pulled off with semi-formals, pair of khaki pants or even a button-down dress shirt.

4. High fashion Gladiator style: If you want a bolder stronger appeal, look no further. Gladiators are extremely casual type of foot wear yet, they

Lastly, look at it this way, women love shoes, they love men who choose nice shoes even more, and a man who can look great and feel comfortable in a pair of designer sandals is going to do well with the ladies. At the least, it will help you get there.

Keep an extra pair of sandals in your briefcase, laptop bag or backpack. They don’t take up much room and offer many stylish options for quick change of pace after work, hangouts or even a quick date.

6 . M at c hing w ill a lway s M at t er: There are plenty of colors and styles to choose from so don’t forget to make an informed style decision.

7. K eep i t C le a n: This should go without saying, but probably needs to be repeated every now and then. Keep your Feet as well as your Sandals clean.

8 . Go c l a s s y: Leave the cheap flip-flops at the beach or the gym shower. Opt for a nicer, dressy pair when heading out. Remember: gone are the days when the only option for summers were flip-flops.

9 . Be Foot-S m a rt: Do not go to places like bars and pubs wearing any kind of sandals.

10 . Wa lk t he wa lk : Pick the right pair of comfortable sandals. You wouldn’t want to wear a gladiator if you have to cover a mile on foot. fb.me/TNM.Magazine

2. A Brush and Comb

Essential

Grooming tools

every Man should have

I

mpression lasts, it really does. A man’s bathroom says a great deal about his approach to life. Caring for your appearance doesn’t place you feminine; it doesn’t label you a dandy, and it doesn’t classify you as a metro. Regardless of what styles you choose, what fashion trends you follow, or the beliefs you hold about the importance of appearance, every man needs a collection of tools to ensure that he is looking his best.

1. Stubble Trimmer Razors Maintain your look, everyday with the next generation in stubble control technology. To someone used to zinging an electric razor over their face a couple times each morning, a traditional shave can be quite daunting, but it really only involves three items: a quality razor, a good brush, and some glycerin-based shaving cream. When purchasing a shaving set, it can often feel like a lot of money initially, but remember that a good shaving set should last for many years. So, as shaving is something most of us do every day, why not make this daily routine enjoyable?

Men’s hair care starts with quality brushes and combs designed for men’s hair. Hair is notorious for being unruly, especially when you have a big meeting or date coming up. When the wind blows, there’s nothing like a comb for a quick fix-up, so keep one handy at all times. For your morning grooming ritual, you’ll want a hairbrush, too. Opt for soft, natural-bristle brushes.

3. Toothbrush The condition of your teeth can affect everything from your smile to your heart health, so brush twice a day and between meals if you can manage it. You might also want to consider brushing your tongue. Manual brushing makes it easier for you to get at plaque under your gum line and do a more thorough job of brushing between teeth rather than electric methods. This method is considered done correctly rather than using electric toothbrushes.

4. Manscaping Trimmers Some of you may want to carve a couple of eyebrows out of your unibrow, give the back of your neck a touchup between haircuts, banish those stray hairs peeking out of your nose or ears, thin your beard, or perform some landscaping on your back or points more south of the region. There are specialty razors for all kinds of manscaping tasks. The trick is to marry the right tool with the task and learn to use it effortlessly. Some newer specialty razors have multiple blades and can perform more than one function by just switching out the head. They can be versatile and convenient -- after a little practice. Single function razors, like those with spinning blades that won’t snag the tender skin in your nose or nick your earlobe, can only remove hair efficiently from a few areas, but what they do, they do very well.

5. Cologne Cologne is supposed to be an accent, not the basis of your hygiene routine. So, use a very small amount, two or three dabs or sprays at the most. A man’s cologne isn’t meant to mark his territory as he roams from place to place, it should only be noticed by those in intimate proximity. It is recommended to put cologne on pulse points such as the wrists, the base of the throat, and behind the ears as the heat produced in these areas will help activate the scent.

6. Mouthwash/ Tongue Scraper: Bad breath, or halitosis, is nothing more than bacteria in your mouth feeding on various proteins. You can be the bestlooking, most talented man around, but if a closer encounter reveals some foulsmelling breath, all bets are off. Having a good mouthwash such like Listerine or Scope in your bathroom is an essential part of starting each day off on the right foot. Tongue scrapers are a lesser known tool in the fight against bad breath, but can be the most effective part of your arsenal. Most odor-causing bacteria are found on the tongue, so a tongue scraper goes right to the primary source of bad breath, removing bacteria, food particles, and the discharge that drips down from your nasal cavities.

7. Nail clippers Nail care is important. No woman wants chipped or jagged nails near her soft skin, wherever that skin may be. Use them–not only for your finger nails, but for your toe nails as well. Clean nails harbor fewer bacteria, and short, well-trimmed nails (and toes) will leave you less vulnerable to problems like hangnails and ingrown toenails. Look for clippers that will fit the curve of your nail so that one or two quick snips will do the job cleanly.

Summer Skin Care Tips for Men While there are many reasons to rejoice for warmer temperatures, including summer barbecues, swimsuit season, and leisurely outdoor trips; there are also a few downsides to the constant sunshine. Sun exposure, wind and dry air can all wreak havoc on your skin. Mens’ skin is 20% thicker than womens’ skin because it’s richer in collagen and elastin. The active sebaceous glands make the skin much oilier. No matter what your skin type is, you have to clean your face daily. Deep cleansing keeps the pores clear, skin healthy and good looking. Just like womens’ skin, mens’ skin is also prone to dehydration, sun damage, changes in the environment like air pollution, climate etc. Basic cleansing, protection and moisturizing after shaving is an effective skin care routine. Taking care of your skin is not just for the ladies any more! Men want their skin to look good as they age as well. If you are a man who wants to preserve the good skin that nature gave you, the following tips can help. So fellas it goes like this! Invest in a quality face wash for proper cleansing:

Use an aftershave daily:

All men should invest in a high-quality face wash. The soap from your tub won’t cut it! If you use regular soap on your face, not only could you increase the oil production on your face, potentially leading to acne or other problems, but regular soap is drying and does not protect your skin from summer sun and wind. High quality cleanser that will keep pores clear of oil and keep the skin looking healthy. Clarifying cleansers are important for a man’s skincare routine, because it prepares the skin for a shave or exfoliation by reaching deep into the pores.

Aftershave is the number one product that most men tend to ignore. It helps to restore lost moisture and oils after a close shave, and you’ll need this to protect your skin and reduce its sensitivity to the sun. The right aftershave can soothe the skin after daily shaving. It is particularly important to use an aftershave during the summer because high winds can chap and damage the skin. For some men, this will lead to peeling, flaky skin, while others may see acne or an increase in oil production. Try to avoid the ones with alcohol as it dries your skin and go for the maximum moisturizing effect here too.

Use a toner with glycolic acid daily:

Ingest Water:

Men’s skin is typically thicker and tougher than women’s skin, so it can tolerate active ingredients in toners and astringents. Glycolic acid helps keep the pores clear throughout the day, and will also reduce the risk of ingrown hairs after shaving.

Your body tends to lose a lot of moisture in the summer, so it’s important to regularly replenish the H2O. Drink at least 15-20 glasses of water to keep yourself hydrated. Other than providing the necessary moisture, it will help flush the toxic content.

Exfoliate at least once every four days:

Avoid washing the face with hot water:

Getting rid of dead skin cells with a natural scrub is an essential part of your summer skin care routine. Undergo a deep exfoliation at least once every four days, or once per week to scrub away dead skin cells, reduce the risk of ingrown hairs from shaving, and keep your skin looking healthy and glowing.

If you enjoy taking hot showers and tend to use your cleanser while you shower, this is the season to break out of the habit. You can still take a hot shower but avoid washing your face during your shower session. Cleanse your face using lukewarm water either before or after your shower so that skin doesn’t dry out.

Use Sunscreen: Sunscreen is important throughout the year, but it is especially important during the summer months. Bright, intense sunlight can cause serious damage to the skin. Make sure that the sunscreen used is applied at least fifteen to thirty minutes before stepping out in the sun. Many of these products also contain moisturizer or materials to prevent the aging of your skin.

Moisturize Daily: Moisturizers are not just for women. A moisturizer is essential in the summer to protect your face from the drying air and winds. If you plan to spend the day at a sporting event, moisturizing is especially important. Don’t worry if some of your male friends or work-out buddies find it weird at first, you’ll soon experience how refreshing and beneficial it is to use these kind of products after a shower. Some moisturizers come with built-in sunscreen too, so you only have to apply one product.

54

JUNE 2013

Vitamin C: Men can use products containing vitamin C. Vitamin C is a natural anti-oxidant, so it will help reduce free radical activity caused by the sun.

Block the sun’s rays when feasible: Take defensive measures in terms of the sun’s radiation. The best way of sun protection is always to physically block the sun’s rays with to select from, sunglasses and protective clothing.

Eat balanced and healthy diet: You are everything you eat, appropriate? Your skin tone complexion reflects everything you eat. “A man’s diet is no different over a woman’s in terms of having healthy-looking skin tone. Proper hydration, eating much more fiber and avoid sugar, alcohol and fatty foods can be a must to own best skin tone. ”

of your face, the center of the forehead, nose and chin (T-Zone). Dry areas are often the cheeks and sometimes the forehead.

You should always understand your own skin type before you begin treating your skin at home. Every man’s skin is different and many of you will have a combination of different skin types i.e. dry on the cheeks and oily on the nose and forehead. It’s useful to identify each type of skin to help select the best ingredients for your personal home skin care remedies to look after it.

You need to take care not to use products that are too harsh and that will dry your skin out. Also nothing too greasy as this will only exacerbate the problem. The best solution is to use different products on different areas i.e. oil-free on the greasy areas and moisturizing on the dry areas or specific products for combination skin. Whatever your type a good skin care routine is all you need to keep it looking healthy, fresh and clear.

“It’s useful to identify each type of skin to help select the best ingredients for your personal home skin care remedies to look after it.”

There are five main skin types:

Oily Oily skin usually has a greasy shine, especially on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and is prone to open pores, blackheads, spots and pimples. Oily skin can be a real problem, often looking dull and patchy. You need to keep it as clean as possible by using a good quality facial wash twice a day, a facial scrub two or three time a week and an oil-free moisturizer that will leave the skin matt, at least once a day. Take care not to over stimulate with harsh products or those that will over dry the skin. Avoid soap as it will disturb the skin’s natural protection and make the problem worse.

Dry Dry skin usually feels uncomfortable and tight, especially after shaving or washing. It can peel, flake and look scaly and lined. Dry skin looks older as its rough, dull surface does not reflect the light very effectively. This skin type needs a good moisturizer , avoid soap and use sun protection. Drink plenty of water (beer and wine don’t count!) to prevent dehydration especially if you work in an air conditioning office.

Summer Skin Care – Home Remedies: Skincare is an important part of our life that men tend to neglect. It isn’t worth doing so: feel free to try a variety of home remedies that suits you best. Your skin will be grateful for it. •

Take some fresh mint and make a fine paste of it. Add a pinch of turmeric powder and mix well. Apply this fine paste all over the face and leave for 15 minutes and wash with cold water. This will help your skin sooth from the summer heat.

Exfoliate your facial skin by means of a homemade scrub prepared out of half a cup yogurt, five table spoons of gram flour, a dash of turmeric and six drops of rose water can prove to be an effective option.

Prepare a pack consisting of three table spoons of mashed papaya, one table spoon of honey or lemon juice and white of an egg. This will serve to revive radiance.

In case you want to avoid the use of egg white, the resulting blend of cucumber, honey and yogurt may be used to provide cooling touch to the skin.

Regular cleansing is one of the most important steps to get glowing skin during summer. Dip a piece of cotton wool in milk and wipe your face with it. It also cleans unseen dirt which can go down into your pores.

Prepare a pack of 1 tbsp. sugar and 1 mashed cucumber and store it in the refrigerator to cool. Applying this pack for fifteen minutes keeps your skin hydrated and smooth during summers.

If you are pimple prone during summers, then this pack is for you. This pack has anti-microbial properties which will help to curb pimples. Mix Gram flour / besan and warm honey. Apply this paste regularly to your face for 20 minutes. Wash it off, thoroughly with cold water.

This pack will help slowing down aging by tighten your skin and making it smooth and glowing. Mix a tbsp. of honey, lemon juice and one egg white to prepare this pack. Apply it on the face with your fingertips. Do not wash for 20 minutes and then rinse with cool water and pat dry with a towel.

Sensitive If your skin reacts easily to anything you put on it, then chances are you have sensitive skin. It may also have a tendency to go red when exposed to heat or to the sun and you might find that certain foods or fragrances will cause a rash or make your skin itch. You need to avoid anything containing harsh chemicals or a lot of perfume, avoid soap and always try to select products designed for sensitive skin. Always protect sensitive skin from the sun even in cooler weather.

Normal If you suffer with none of the above and your skin is even-textured and problem free, then you have normal skin. You do still need to protect it however to keep it that way. Don’t overload it with thick, greasy products and avoid harsh chemical formulas. Aim for products that are designed with men in mind and it should stay smooth and healthy for longer.

Combination It’s not uncommon to have a skin type that’s a combination of two or more of the above. Your skin will normally be a combination of both oily and dry. The oily areas are normally straight down the middle fb.me/TNM.Magazine

en don’t necessarily have to love everything served to them on a shiny platter, especially a shiny platter that is your balding head. Thinning hair which may/will lead to a chrome dome is frightening for men all over. It’s not because you wear your helmet too much, not because you had a ponytail in your heydays, there is no one and nothing to blame here. Simply put, you’re losing hair because you are genetically predisposed to, and well maybe because of your hormones. Men would go the deepest of hells to stop going bald, because it is an influential factor in not only how others perceive you professionally and personally, but also how you view yourself. All is not lost, here are some ways in which you can prevent, regrow or at least slow down the hair loss process: Strategized Haircuts Not everyone is blessed with a timeless thick patch of hair, so we have to make use of what we have. Working around what you have may be the best idea at times. Short dome hugging hair cuts or buzz cuts might just do the trick, think Jason Statham. Else, you could go the whole hog and shave it right off. Honesty is the best policy!

You’re losing hair because you are genetically predisposed to, and well maybe because of your hormones.

Specialized Shampoos Hair loss treatment shampoos are a debated remedy to hair loss as it has varying results. Available readily at supermarkets, hair loss treatment shampoos work for some but for others it’s just another shampoo. And with so many brands to choose from, there is no saying which one works the best, may swear by Ramdev’s shampoo for the reason of their lovely locks. Home Remedies There are several home remedies that promise a revived set of hair. They range from the use of coconut milk, amla oil, mustard oil, lettuce and onions. We do hope these remedies do work, or you’ll just end us seasoning yourself for a cannibal supper. However, one home remedy that seems to fare better than others is the act of vigorously rubbing your scalp till it tingles after a cold wash. It will activate the sebaceous glands and energize the circulation of blood in the affected area, making the hair grow healthy. Pharmaceutical Options There are drugs that go beyond just stopping hair loss but also trying to regrow them. However, these are serious alternatives which should be consulted once over with a certified doctor before use. Some of these options are expensive and once you stop using them, you’re back to square one. Not to mention some probability of side effects and a long time to reap the rewards.

Surgical Options If everything else has been tried and tested to fail, surgery might be the last option. And it is the last option for a reason. Before you decide to get anything done, consider the costs, expected outcomes and risks associated with the procedures. Hair Transplants are the most popular surgical alternative. Transplants operate by grafting tiny follicular units from hair-growing sections of the scalp to problem areas, so the tiny grafts will be visible until the transplant is finished. So during the several visits for the transplant, you will be looking like you have doll hair on your head. To our knowledge, this is the only surgical option to hair loss in Nepal. A more radical option, flap procedures are conducted in three phases and consist of surgically moving a flap of hair-growing scalp to a bald area (cringe). But once completed, you have naturally growing hair where there was none before. Another option is the scalp reduction, and sadly it is what it sounds like. In scalp reductions, bald areas of your scalp are surgically removed, and hair-baring tissue is stretched over these areas to offset the difference. There are remedies to hair loss and balding so there is no reason to lose your head. But, like we always say “Prevention is better than cure.” If nothing works, you can always let nature run its course and be comfortable in your own skin.

BULK UP!

eating right is more important than training right, whether the goal is to bulk up or shrink.

60

JUNE 2013

If muscle were made from Momos and beer, we would look huge. But the sad part is they don’t and we don’t look huge- unless you count that big sack of fat up front and dead center. If momos and burgers don’t do the trick what is it that really helps you pack on muscle. Well we decided to let you in on a secret; 8 foods that really help you muscles grow. Eat right and lift heavy weights and you will get that batch of biceps in no time.

Eggs: Protein

Chicken: Protein Pack

The protein in eggs has the highest biological value. Calorie for calorie, you need less protein from eggs than you do from other sources to achieve the same muscle building benefits. Remember, you have to EAT the yolk. In addition to protein, it also contains vitamin B12 which is necessary for fat breakdown and muscle contraction. NO, eating a few eggs a day won’t increase your risk of heart disease.

When you think of building a buffed up body, you may think of well buff. However, chicken’s one of the best sources of leucine around. A mere 3 ounces of chicken breast will set you up with more than 3 g of leucine and nearly 20 g of protein, at less than 100 calories. Because it’s lean meat, chicken can help you maintain a healthy muscle to fat ratio.

Almonds: Medicine

Olive Oil: Liquid Energy

Crunch for crunch, almonds are one of the best sources of alpha-tocopherol vitamin E; meaning this is best absorbed by your body. Vitamin E which is predominantly available in almonds, is a potent antioxidant that can help prevent freeradical damage after heavy workouts. And the fewer hits taken from free radicals, the faster you muscles will recover from a workout and start growing. Eat about two handfuls during the entire day.

While you might get the idea of oiling up your chest and arms to strike a pose, but it works better if you eat this stuff. The monounsaturated fat in olive oil prevents muscle breakdown by lowering levels of a sinister cellular protein called tumor necrosis factor-a, which is linked with muscle wasting and weakness. Olive oil and monounsaturated fats have also been associated with everything from lower rates of heart disease and colon cancer to a reduced risk of diabetes and osteoporosis.

Tuna: The Growth Regulator

Edamame: Let there be greenery.

In addition to setting you up with more than 3 g of leucine, a can of tuna contains a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which produce multiple muscular benefits. It has been indicated that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may contribute to signaling muscle protein synthesis in older adults. Fish oil may also reduce inflammation and decrease muscle soreness, which may allow exercisers to train longer and harder. Finally, you can’t ignore the fat-burning properties of fish. “Fish proteins enhance loss of abdominal fat.

One cup of these green guys (without shells) will jump-start muscle protein synthesis with 17 g of protein and a little more than 1 g of leucine. They are also packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which support your brain and central nervous system. To function at peak capacity in the gym, your brain must have enough healthy fats. A cup of edamame also serves up a healthy dose of inflammation-reducing antioxidants.

Yogurt: Balance is the key

Coffee: The Repetition Builder

Yogurt is an ideal combination of protein and carbohydrates for exercise recovery and muscle growth. Yogurt is one of the few foods that contain conjugated linoleic acid, a special type of fat shown in some studies to reduce body fat. Don’t buy frozen yogurt or yogurt with added sugar and fruits at the bottom. Get plain low fat yogurt. Eat it with berries & flax seeds.

Fueling your workout with caffeine will help you lift longer. A recent study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that men who drank 2 1/2 cups of coffee a few hours before an exercise test were able to sprint 9 percent longer than when they didn’t drink any. It’s believed the caffeine directly stimulates the muscles. Skip it if you have a history of high blood pressure, though. fb.me/TNM.Magazine

TNM DRINKS

COFFEETREND inKATHMANDU

By: Siddharth Sherpa

There is a Turkish saying that “coffee needs to be black like hell, strong like death and as sweet as love”. Each morning, like the rest of the country, I participate in a brazenly self-contradicting act – slugging a strong morning coffee to get me wound up like a coiled spring for the working day ahead. Being in the Social service organization and into Logistics and HR, work for me is always stressful and keeps me occupied throughout the day. Keeping a nice cup of coffee by my side is like having my own personal muse, by my side. “I just can’t get going without my cup of coffee!” Coffee brings up a whole new set of images for someone like me, it gets me energized, the aroma of coffee is mellow and soothing, and every sip gives a meditation conducing

waft of its roasted scent, transporting me to a relaxed state of mind. Coffee is many things to many people: It’s the relaxing part of the dining experience. It warms the bones and sharpens the mind on a cold day. It’s the commonality that ties people and cultures together. It is the rocket fuel of the Type-A personality, and the substance that leads to the “all-nighter” cram study session in college. It is the “coffee clutch” at work, the brainstorm for a great idea, and the perfect first-date ice-breaker. It is the substance that warms conversations between friends and family, and it never goes out of style. It merely changes form and design. Today, the coffee culture takes us to every corner of Kathmandu, where it has become a social setting trend. To hang out with friends

or loved ones in the now post-grunge era atmosphere is commonplace. One can easily find a coffee house complete with overstuffed chairs, free wifi Internet access, coffee gifts, and coffee house music to top off the mood. When it comes to talking about coffee, the true coffee lovers will know how to use coffee jargon. To be one step closer to becoming one of these well-respected coffee connoisseurs one should get familiarized with some of the basic coffee terminology. The flavor, The acidity, The body, The aroma and The finish of coffee! We all have unique responses to coffee and caffeine. Those responses vary wildly from person to person. Those responses change over time. We are all unique.

3 INTERNATIONAL NEPAL TATTOO CONVENTION

TNM EVENTS

Words: Yonten Yonjan Photography: Siddharth M. Shakya

T

he 3rd Nepal tattoo convention held at hotel Yak & Yeti was a three day event that took place from the 26th to 28th of April. The tattoo carnival celebrated the unique ancient tradition of body art by bringing tattoo artists from all over the world under one platform. The sole purpose of the convention was to enrich Nepali tattoo artists with the exposure and experience of working with international tattoo artists and exposing rich Nepali tattoo art to international artists at the same time.

This year’s convention was bigger, better and bolder with more than 75 national and international tattoo artists gracing the convention. Big names of the tattoo industry made their presence felt, attracting over a total of 5,000 visitors. Some of the legendary figures in the world of tattooing present were Jondix representing Holy Trauma (Spain), Chad Koeplinger from Adventure Tattoo (USA) and Laurent Maina from Divine Canvas(U.K). Furthermore, there were other awe inspiring artists from Russia, France, Thailand and other countries.

The tattoo convention proved to be common grounds for the artists to share inking skills and techniques with each other.

A pretty out of the world contest was organized by KTM to match the occasion where they awarded Rs.25000 to any tattoo

with the KTM orange color or biker theme incorporated in it in an attempt to help bridge the gap between bikers and tattoo artists (if such gap did exist). Kiran Thapa Magar won the contest with his scarification of the initials KTM into his skin. Coincidentally, his initials are also KTM. Apart from tattooing the convention showcased traditional music and dances carrying ancient mystical stories. Tantric dances, masked dances, traditional Newari and traditional folk music were some appealing side events. The 3rd convention was one of its kind which provided a rare chance to get inked by some of the most renowned tattoo artists in the world.

The Environment Crusader:

Dr. Pralad Yonzon Words: Prasidha Singh Yonzon

On November 2011, our nation lost not only one of the top scientists and conservationists on this side of the world but a great human being as well. Dr. Pralad Yonzon was a man of principles, an academic success, an extraordinary sensation in his profession and a loving father. TNM brings to you Dr. Pralad Yonzon, as written by his son: Prasidha Singh Yonzon. “Black is black and white is white. There is no grey “. This was the golden rule. A man driven by principles, sheer passion for work and hunger for knowledge led an illustrious career. From saving Rhinos to recording Bengal Tigers at the highest altitude, one could say that Dr. Pralad Yonzon never had a dull day at the office. He dedicated his life towards the conservation of nature and the wildlife it has to offer. He worked mostly in the Himalayan region (Nepal, India

degrees including double masters (MSc) and a PhD from well established American universities (University of Maine, Colorado State University and Stanford University- East West Centre), Dr.Yonzon was always eager to learn more. I still recall him pulling off allnighters at home like any college student would do. He always said there was still so

Born in 1951, the year of the tiger, Dr.Yonzon shared similarities with

“ He a lw ay s s a id t h e re w a s s t il l s o m u c h t o l e a r n i n t h e f ie l d o f c o n s e r vat io n t h at e v e n a hu n dre d re i n c a r n at io n s w o u l d n o t be e n o ug h f o r h i m .” this majestic animal. Like the tiger, he was fearless, sharp and had flair. As a researcher, he knew no bounds to stop him from gaining scientific groundknowledge. He was always on the move and preferred to be out there in the wild rather than being nailed to the office table and chair. A brilliant student with three advanced

much to learn in the field of conservation that even a hundred reincarnations would not be enough for him. Dr.Yonzon, a full bright scholar, was known for guiding sound government policies on nature conservation not only in Nepal but also in Bhutan and Vietnam. Besides influencing policies and frameworks, he had an innate ability for scientific research. He worked extensively in the eastern Himalayas and carried out widespread scientific studies on Rhinos, Red Pandas, fish, birds, elephants, snow leopards and tigers. In particular, during his study, he made a groundbreaking discovery of Bengal Tigers at an elevation of 3,000m (photographic proof) and 4,110m (pug marks) in Bhutan. This discovery proved much significance to the existing knowledge on Bengal tigers. It also, provided deeper insights to the way tigers travel. In his words, “pugmarks at 4,110 meters suggest that tigers use expansively high altitude pass to move into adjoining valleys.” His contributions towards conservation and biodiversity did not go unnoticed. In 2002, Dr.Pralad Yonzon was awarded the Order of the Golden Ark by HRH Prince Bernhard for providing exceptional services for the conservation of flora and fauna on the earth. This order of merit has been received by the likes of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh and Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. His integrity and passion served him

well. From what I can tell, “work” made him intrinsically happy. The awards and achievements just came along the way. As his son, there is much I learned from him and yet so much I could have learned. The best thing I learned from him was humility. A recipient of the Order of the Golden Ark, Mary Totten Achievement Award, The Crown Prince Award, Mahendra Vidya Bhusan-First Class, The Distinguished Alumnus Award- University of Maine, and Professional Excellence- Department of Wildlife Resources University of Maine would never come across as showy. Rather, he was more of a simple man. He would enjoy his weekend gardening, hiking the hills that surround Sitapaila, cooking and cycling around Jawalakhel in his shorts and tattered loafers grocery shopping. He would spend Sundays out on the deck with his breakfast and a cup of French-press. During the summer, he used to pick up the guitar and jam out with me for hours. We didn’t do the basics or covers, we really used to rock ‘n’ roll man! I often woke up

to the riffs of CCR, the Rolling Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry’s sweet little sixteen, all the good stuff. I loved his taste in music and I picked it up in no time. We used to drive around in his Toyota Fourrunner, listening to his mixed tapes when audio cassettes were still ‘in’. I always took the co-pilot’s seat and when I looked over; I would see my hero, my idol. Crew cut, aviators, a white tee, Levis denim and a pair of boots, that’s all you needed. We grew into being better friends as we grew older. He made things much easier to understand and was always there to help as a friend. There was no awkwardness, no imposed relation, and no obligations. Just a father and son, the best of friends. To say that I miss him would be an understatement. His professional career speaks for itself but he was a different man to me. He was the poet, the musician, the photographer, the cook, the explorer, the comedian, the perfect host, the perfectionist. He was my dad.

TNM RADAR

the urban brothers In conversation with Ashish and Ayush Rajbhandari from Urban Food about their brand new venture in the packaged-meat industry.

ASHISH RAJBHANDARI

T

hey say family is your greatest strength; one can achieve so much more with the support of their family. The family duo brothers Ashish Rajbhandari and Ayush Rajbhandari are on a verge of conquering the nation with their brand new food line, Urban Food. With goals of providing slaughtering services, meat packaging and producing several types of food products based on meat and cereals, Urban Food Industries seeks to provide quality product according to the consumer tastes in Nepal. The TNM team managed to schedule a small meeting with these brothers in arms to discuss briefly about their current venture and more. TNM: Having an entrepreneurial mind, one is always engaged in multiple projects/ideas. Please tell us about the venture that is keeping you on your toes at the moment. Ashish: I had many other ideas before setting up a meat processing unit. I started this from the grassroots and I look after everything from purchase to sale. So you can imagine what keeps me on my toes. Ayush: Let’s just say, the flow of ideas never stops and may be in the near future you can see me being occupied with another venture. TNM: Although this is just the starting of the venture, how do you find the

food business sector? And why did you choose this sector? Ashish: Food is a basic necessity and it’s not affected much by inflation or recession. People might buy less quantity but they would never starve. My family has been in the trading business for the last 30 years, especially in food, and I wanted to do something related to the food industry. Instead of importing, I thought of producing here. This way, money will still be in Nepal. Here is one fact: It was estimated that per capita consumption of meat in Nepal was about 9 kg/year, whereas basic requirements for a balanced human diet is around 14kg per year. The country needs more meat. Ayush: Nepalese people are zealous meat eaters. Nepalese consumers are modernizing; we relish processed meat products like sausages, bacon, salami etc. Therefore, we bring to you Urban Food, a top-quality, modern, frozen processed-meat factory.

TNM: What are the major challenges you have faced so far and how did you manage to overcome them? Ashish: Setting up this industry was a big hurdle. Apart from registration of land, dealing with people and the local community among others was the real problem we had to overcome. As of now, the challenge lies

fb.me/TNM.Magazine

in facing our competitors in the market and satisfying old and new customers. Ayush: One of the most challenging things, I believe is work ethics, especially those regarding hard work and moral principles, of Nepal’s government officials. Some say money is the root of all problems but the truth is: money is actually the solution. TNM: In your opinion, what is the future of a venture like yours? Expanding nationally might already be on your list, but any plans of expanding globally to the international market? Ashish: The future is an ocean. There are lots of things that can be done. In order to supply quality products we are thinking of coming up with our own animal farms. Ayush: The future looks fantastic. We are already in all the major cities in Nepal. We are here to stay and expanding to places that require hard-to-get visa. Besides looking at it as just another business, food is something very interesting; one can be creative, playful and make changes all the time. TNM: From where we stand right now, people say that Nepal is probably in its worst development loop at the moment and many are hesitant to invest or start new ventures in the country. What is your take on this? Ashish: Being a developing country, there are a lot of things yet to be done. Anything you do can have high probability of being successful if you do not compromise on quality. Ayush: Opportunity, like publicity, looms in positivity as well as negativity. People make a business out of war, recession, sickness, death, divorce, waste etc. An entrepreneur has to be creative, organized and proactive. Underdeveloped countries like Nepal have way more entrepreneurial opportunities than the developed. TNM: Even though the nation’s current situation is in a slump, there have been a lot of risk takers who have started several ventures. Is there any particular field or venture that you feel that you should have started or that you should have been involved in? Ashish Rajbhandari: Our nation is in the hands of our politicians. So why worry. Work hard and it will pay off eventually. There are many businesses I could have or had been involved in, but if you are

an entrepreneur there will be at least one business idea on your mind everyday which you can always start. Ayush: The nation’s political situation is in a slump. Work is required everywhere so money can be made everywhere. TNM: “Mushrooming Business Strategy” has become a common term today; a scenario where people tend to copy a business idea after seeing somebody do really well in that business venture similar to a way a mushroom grows. What are your thoughts on such strategy? Ashish: Copying is one of the best strategies that businesses can do. It might be new to the country but everybody copies. In my opinion, you have to be innovative and cater the local market. We have to be GLOCALThink globally, work locally. Ayush: In business, as many benefits there are of being the first, there are also many benefits of being second. Sometimes “following” can be one’s spring-board to “leading” and being second can help you prepare better and learn from the mistakes of your predecessors.

TNM: What is your normal working day like? Ashish: Get up early. Have tea and reach the factory before my staff get there. The route is a 30-minute drive or 1-hour cycling. Check production; follow up on orders (current and pending), payments, meeting with sales and marketing team. Think about lots of crazy ideas. Ayush: Rise early. Kick-start the factory. Spend time in the office – computer works, paper works, communication. Visit the market to meet people and opportunities. Before calling the day off, summarize the day and plan for the next.

TNM: As aspiring business men what are your strong traits? Any inspirations? Ashish: I want to be the best in what I do and I also love what I do. You need to keep an open mind to criticism, and improve on it. You might make mistakes along the way but keep in mind never to make the same mistake twice. My greatest inspiration are my parents. Ayush: I try my best, to expand, to be open, to learn and apply. I am most fortunate that my greatest inspiration lives at home with me: my father TNM: If not business, what else would you rather do? Any passion? Ashish: Sports has always been my passion. Only if Nepal had good scope, you might have seen me playing for some football club or as an athlete competing against Usain Bolt. Ayush: Arts is my passion. I’d try writing stories and making music. TNM: Was there ever a time when you thought of taking an off track profession? Which and why? Ashish: Having grown up in a business environment, being a “Businessman” was my only profession. I made my first sale when I was in Kindergarten. Ayush: No. I believe if one is to succeed, focus is the key. And I was focused on what I do. TNM: Where do you see yourself in a few years’ time? Ashish: At the top being the number one in the food industry. I also see myself being engaged in many other businesses ventures. Ayush: I see myself being involved in multiple business ventures. Current ventures thriving and well expanded, and I see myself earning not only a good amount of money but also name and fame.

TNM: With technological advancements, developing civilization and world economy, the ways to start a business and its execution has drastically changed in the last decade, what do you think are the traits a new comer needs to possess to be successful these days? Ashish: A person needs to be knowledgeable, well educated and, most importantly, willing to learn (from past mistakes and experienced people). Ayush: Knowledge is power. And nowadays, information is only clicks away. Technology has made communication so instant it’s like timetravel. Embrace technology, embrace changes, and gain knowledge and apply.

Ashish: Accept CHANGE. Don’t get USED to something. Don’t be AFRAID to try new things. Work HARD and be HONEST. Make Personal Relations and MAINTAIN it. Ayush: Nepal is very complex. It’s got a tremendous amount of entrepreneurially undiscovered aspects. It has a lot of potential. Explore for opportunities. Wake up early. Go to class. Be honest. Do your best and keep pushing. Think (out of the box helps). Respect everyone – build a good network. Follow up. Bend the rules if you must. Be proactive. Turn your thoughts into action.

TNM: Clever/cunning/sharp/honest/ hardworking/visionary/passionate, which of this or these adjective do you believe describes you best and how? Ashish: I am a passionate, hardworking, visionary, sharp, honest guy. Ayush: Although I’d like to possess all of the mentioned traits equally, I’d say what describes me best is “honest.” Apart from financial gains, which are necessary to survive, I see the business of food as “sewa,” a service to the people. And honesty makes our “sewa” more meaningful and helps us earn a good name. We give people quality. We say what we do and do what we say. Some companies mix pork fat in their chicken sausages and don’t mention it in their “ingredients” section. Some due to religion and some for health concers, but all chicken consumers do not consume pork! TNM: Few words to the aspiring business minds in the country today? Things they need to consider and understand?

Accept CHANGE. Don't get USED to something. Don't be AFRAID to try new things. Work HARD and be HONEST. Make Personal Relations and MAINTAIN it.

TNM: Business sense/professionalism/ vision, is it learned academically or in the field by experience? Ashish: Nepal is a country where you have to be street smart but academics is simultaneously important to reach the next level. Ayush: Are entrepreneurs born or made? I’d say 30-70. Of this 70, for academics versus experience, I’d say 35-65.

TNM MUSIC

joint family I n t e r n a t i o n a l e

“A reggae band that has recently taken the music scene of the country by storm”

T

here must be something more than the Everest and the birth place of Lord Buddha to define what Nepal is, there has to be. But for various known and unknown reasons, our country has not developed in leaps and bounds. A popular theory that has arisen seems to blame the corrupt politicians of the country for the lagging. There are many ways our beloved politicians are talked about mostly utilizing salty sailor talks. Nevertheless, one of the most original roasting of the corrupt politicians came in the form of ‘Neta ji’, the song that had recently gone viral amongst the Nepali audience. Joint Family Internationale is a reggae band that has recently taken the music scene of the country by storm. Notorious for making the crowd groove on their feet at every performance, the band is becoming more and more popular with their audience. Probably the only ones who could make corrupt politicians tap their feet to their own humiliation; TNM got a chance to catch up with the huge crew of Joint Family Internationale and this is how it went. TNM: Why joint family internationale? How did the band come together? JFI: Joint Family was originally formed in 2008 but later, in 2010, artists from Australia, Spain, Turkey and Japan joined the band hence we decided on renaming the band Joint family Internationale. Apart from the obvious reference to the inter-country collaboration factor, Internationale also defines a French rebellious anthem. Not only

Bijent Shah (Bass) 76

do we come from totally different countries, we also have different musical backgrounds and interests. But, the love for reggae is what brought the band together. TNM: How would you describe your genre of music? In your opinion how well has it been received by the audience? JFI: Currently our genre is reggae roots as we haven’t been experimenting on other reggae sub genres so we are straight roots, basically a big reggae band. So far, the response from the audience has been amazing. However, it was surprising to see more expats, foreigners than Nepali people enjoying our music. Nevertheless, we do hope to attract more Nepali people from our song Neta Ji.

Basant Sunal (Trumpet)

TNM: What needs to change in the music industry? JFI: What we feel is that the Nepali music industry is very monotonous, every songs is more or less the same. Few bands stand out, but we need more bands to fill in the missing links of the Nepali music scene. And since there seemed to be no reggae band in Kathmandu, we thought bringing a complete reggae band in the music scene would help out in getting things started. TNM: Which Nepali bands are your favourites? JFI: From the earlier years, it has to be 1974 AD and Mukti & the Revival but currently it has to be Jindabad and Albatross.

Kismat Shrestha (Drums)

Anurag Zimba (Vocals) fb.me/TNM.Magazine

TNM: Tell us about Netaji? JIF: Netaji is as straight forward as it gets. It speaks on behalf of all the people about the disgust and frustrations a Nepali has towards all the corrupt politicians. It reflects an all too common feeling which we translated into a song. We are not pointing fingers at anyone particular but basically it goes to almost all the politicians. TNM: Now that the single is out, is there a complete album on its way? If yes, tell us about others tracks in it. JIF: Yes, we’ll launch a complete album within the next month and a half. We had a lot of fun coming up with the album which has songs that reflect upon the simple things in life like hanging around with friends, and playing music. Our personal favorite from the album is OOHH LAA LAA (an English song). TNM: These days the music industry requires a thin balance of passion and commercial aspects, what is your say on this? What does JFI represent or aims to achieve? JFI: For us, we believe passion should drive music. We think when you create music passionately, the music is bound to turn out good and this is one of the biggest

Inap Shrestha (Saxophone) fb.me/TNM.Magazine

secrets to connecting with the listeners. But, being passionate will not take care of the worldly needs so we really have to find that right balance between passion and commercialization. Of course, being commercial doesn’t mean charging a lot of money to the sponsors or performing randomly in every corner of the streets. So it’s really about finding the balance rather than focusing on just one of the aspects. We believe we should never give up and we strive our level best to reach our goal. JFI aims to achieve in bringing people together through music and build bridges to overcome all kinds of troubles and sorrows that surround us all the time.

" Netaji is as straight forward as it gets. It speaks on behalf of all the people about the disgust and frustrations a Nepali has towards all the corrupt politicians "

Sanjay Shrestha (Guitar/Backing Vocals)

TNM: Tell us about the instruments that you use. JIF: We have quite a few members and a great mix of instruments. We have Sanjay on the Guitar/backing vocals, Zimba on the Vocals, Inap plays Saxaphone, Kismat- on the Drums, Bijent on the Bass, Basant and Gemma play the trumpet and Mahesh plays Guitar. TNM: Is there any tour in the pipeline for JF? JIF: We definitely want to tour and perform at the major cities of the country but currently, due to the busy schedule of our band members, there are no tours. We’ll have a tour in the near future though. TNM: How important are live performances to the band? JIF: We think live performances help the band connect with the listeners and improve our own synchronization and coordination of the band members. And let’s not forget, it is a whole lot of fun!

Sweet spots to kiss her: Let your lips do the talking

After you’ve sweet talked your way into her inner dominion of intimacy, put your lips and tongue to better use. Your lips are one of the biggest weapons in your arsenal when it comes to giving her pleasure, so kiss, lick and nibble your way into her pleasure realms. Some areas that are good places to kiss a woman are more obvious than others; here are a few pointers to guide you along the way. EARS: Even if your partner is more on the ticklish side, at the heat of the moment the ear is an extremely erogenous zone. You can go for a little soft nibbling of the earlobe or lightly brushing your lips across her ear. Refrain from licking inside her ear or using too much saliva. A wet ear is not necessarily a good feeling. BACK OF THE NECK: The back of the neck is an often neglected area. Take her by surprise and place a gentle warm kiss on the back of her neck. You may feel the shiver running down her spine yourself. CLOSED EYELIDS: Gently kissing her on her eyelids will definitely set the romantic mood. Start off by kissing her forehead and gently pecking on her closed eyelids. Added bonus if you whisper something sweet into her ears. COLLARBONE: One of the most erotic zones while clothed has to be the collarbone. An

78

JUNE 2013

exposed collarbone of a woman is sexy and your mouth on it will make her think sexy thoughts and make her think of your mouth on more private parts. INSIDE OF HER FOREARM: You may not have thought of this as a particular hot spot, but it is highly underrated. Intertwine your fingers with hers and lightly brush your lips over the skin of her inner forearms. HIPS: The hips are another area she would want to be kissed. Send waves of pleasure down to her toes and right up her spine. Throw her a mix of kisses, licks and nibbles and she will want you doing the same all over. BREASTS: If you were able to get your lips this close (hopefully with her consent), you have been doing something right. For most women it is the holy grail of pleasure areas, maybe second to one other particular area. Play your cards

carefully here or you will turn her right off. It’s a no holds barred affair, kissing, licking and biting are all acceptable as long as it is done gently. No bruises! The nipples aren’t the only area to give attention to, explore and discover erogenous zones all over her breasts. BEHIND THE KNEE CAP: Another extremely sensitive area of the female anatomy, gently brushing your lips over this area is extremely sensual. It is sure to send goose bumps all over her body. It is important to conquer the surrounding valleys before attacking the kingdom. So before you go for the prize, make sure you hit as many other pleasure zones as you can. Be creative and remember not all women react in the same way. But learning what actions bring what rewards is half the fun.

Erectile dysfunction

Wanting to be Stuck in a Hard Place

T

he curtains are closed, the candles are lit, romantic music fills the air and rose petals are scattered on the bed where a beautiful lady awaits you… but Sgt. Dickinson refuses to come to attention. Erectile dysfunction is a haunting issue for men around the world. An erection problem is when a man cannot get or keep an erection that is firm enough to have intercourse. You may be unable to get an erection at all. Or, you may lose the erection during intercourse before you are ready. In about every decade of a man’s life, starting at about 18 years of age, there is a 10% to 12% loss of erectile function. So by age 48, one may have lost 30% to 36% of his prowess. By 60, a man may be at 50% capacity. When things are in full working order, ejaculation is a three step process: 1. The man becomes sexually aroused. 2. The penis responds by becoming erect. 3. Stimulation of the penis causes ejaculation. Malfunction in step two leads to problems in achieving step 3. And the main reason for such malfunction is because blood is not being pumped into the penis when required. Think of it as a balloon which hasn’t had any air pumped

into it… it is limp. Though we shudder at the very mention of the word, it is an inevitable problem. About 70% of erectile dysfunction cases arise from damage to the nerves, arteries, muscles, or tissues involved in producing an erection. This damage is usually caused by a disease like diabetes, kidney disease, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, or other vascular or neurological diseases. One of the most common reasons, especially in older men, is that the arteries in the penis aren’t dilating enough when the brain sends the signal. Prolonged stress may be to blame too. Whatever the reason, every man will suffer spontaneous impotence from time to time. But it is necessary to distinguish whether the cause of the dysfunction is psychological or because of a problem in your body. To determine the cause, you can perform a simple stamp test. A man often gets multiple erections throughout the night. These involuntary erections mean that everything is fine with the nerves, muscles and arteries involved in the erection process, and signals that the cause of impotence may be psychological. To conduct the stamp test, a man can simply wet and affix a small stamp on his flaccid penis before going to bed. If the stamp is no longer

It is necessary to distinguish whether the cause of the dysfunction is psychological or because of a problem in your body. in place by morning, it means that a nocturnal erection occurred. Either way, consulting a specialist is advised if the problem persists. But for the occasional inability to perform there is good news. Almost as a blessing in disguise for many men, the world was introduced to a magic blue pill Sildenafil citrate, more commonly known as VIAGRA. To sum it up, what the miracle drug does is it allows increased blood flow into certain areas of the penis, which leads to an erection. But be warned, although the medicine is available without prescription in Nepal, it is a good idea to consult with your personal physician before taking the drug. Certain medical conditions make taking Viagra a little more difficult. Also, there are side effects to it as well, from something as common as headaches to rarities like priapism (We will give you the opportunity to Google it yourself, enjoy). Although Viagra is one of the remedies to make sure a spontaneous romp in the sack is not foiled, it is a good idea to consult a physician if you are having trouble with erectile dysfunction for a prolonged period of time.

TNM CAREER

PROBATION PERIOD

WHY YOU NEED TO SURVIVE THIS the most crucial factor during the intial phase of employment WORDS : SAU RAV NEPA L After lots of sweating over CV’s, cover letters, interviews and nervous breakdowns, an individual lands a job. However, they are unaware of the pressure and expectation that is coming with the job. Not many are fully aware of the conditions against which performance will be measured during the initial period of employment. Once the job employment comes in, however, pressure also kicks in. It is this time when the company puts a

“probationary” tag on the new employee. From the first day of work, performance evaluation of the new employee is done against a set of established standards. This evaluation is done as to monitor the progress of the employee in lieu with the goals of the company. In Nepal, the new hires take probation period lightly but globally, probation period is one of the crucial factors during the initial period of employment.

So, what ac tually is a probation period? Probation is a status given to new employee of a company where his/her work performance is closely evaluated either by the supervisor or the manager .In this period, the performance of the new employee is measured to see if his/her progress and skills fit the company or not. It provides a real- insight of the new employee’s suitability for the job.

How long is the probationary period? The probationary period can range from 30 days to six months and in some cases, even a year. It depends on the company’s policy. If the employee is progressing well then, they can be removed from the probationary status. But if they perform below-par and show no signs of improvement then, they are subjected to termination from the job.

“ DURING THIS p e riod , m a n a ge r s or s up e r v i s or s moni t or t he d ay-t o - d ay w ork p e rf orm a nc e of t he ne w e m p l o y e e a l ong w i t h t he s t re ng t h s a nd w e a k ne s s e s .”

82

JUNE 2013

W h a t i s e v a l u a t e d DURING PRO B ATION ? In this period, managers or supervisors monitor the day-today work performance of the new employee along with the strengths and weaknesses. Likewise, the communication skills and behaviour patterns of the new employee are also closely monitored.

Why is this important? Successful completion of probation period will land a permanent employee position. The job will be safe and the new employee will be eligible for benefits and bonuses. Probation period evaluates whether the employee is learning about the tasks associated with the job or not. The probation period provides obvious benefits to both the parties. For the new employee, this will help them to learn in-depth about the job. For the employer, it provides a benefit to terminate the job if there are major problems.

fb.me/TNM.Magazine

HOW TO SURVIVE ? To survive the probationary period, consistent improvement is necessary because you don’t want to give them a reason to fire you. You need to self-evaluate yourself on a timely basis. Since, you use this period to make yourself acquainted with the job hence, little mistakes are fine. Rapid and self-evaluation of performance goals is a must to survive this period because this is more than just a trial period. For the probation period to deliver results in your favour, try focussing on these things.

Understand the Probation Policy: The first and the foremost thing is studying your employer’s probationary period policy. Devote some time to learn about the evaluation criteria. Note down important dates and deadline days in your diary so that it serves as a reminder about your work process.

Study your workplace culture: You should thoroughly study your workforce culture. Communication, socialization and behaviour patterns should be carefully analysed. Observe how your co-workers communicate with the management in the hierarchy. Usually, the modes of communications are emails and telephone calls. Note the behaviour patterns of the employees during lunch periods and any other formal or informal interactions.

Know your job: Know your job description. Go through the organizational chart and study intensively about your duties and processes. Master the job requirements. Never skip training and orientation sessions. In doubt, ask your supervisor/ manager and seek your co-workers help. Notice every single detail about the ways of doing your job. Ask for feedbacks and make everyone believe that you are constantly improving.

“ T o s ur v i v e t he p rob at ion a r y p e riod , c on s i s t e n t im p ro v e m e n t i s ne c e s s a r y be c a u s e y ou don ’ t wa n t t o gi v e t he m a re a s on t o f ire y ou .” Follow the rules: Always reach your office on time because late excuses are not acceptable. Follow the proper dress-code, no chewing gum, wearing expensive ornaments and talking loudly. Keep your personal talks aside in telephonic and formal conversations. Don’t disengage yourself in disruptive or distracting behaviours during your work. You need to be aware of the organizational rules about leave policy. Don’t take a leave except in emergencies or as directed by the company.

Maintain Healthy Relationships: Introduce yourself nicely to your co-workers and clients. Don’t be aggressive or tacky. Build your reputation as a hard-worker. Make yourself a part of the team. Bond well with the co-workers. Never be afraid to ask for suggestions. Respect the ambience of your work place. Refrain from gossiping, complaining and profane talks.

akers of Modern India by Ramachandra Guha: Modern India is the world’s largest democracy, a sprawling, polyglot nation containing one-sixth of all humankind. The existence of such a complex and distinctive democratic regime qualifies as one of the world’s bona fide political miracles. Furthermore, India’s leading political thinkers have often served as its most influential political actors—think of Gandhi, whose collected works run to more than ninety volumes, or Ambedkar, or Nehru, who recorded their most eloquent theoretical reflections at the same time as they strove to set the delicate machinery of Indian democracy on a coherent and just path. Out of the speeches and writings of these thinker-activists, Ramachandra Guha has built the first major anthology of Indian social and political thought. Makers of Modern India collects the work of nineteen of India’s foremost generators of political sentiment, from those whose names command instant global recognition to pioneering subaltern and feminist thinkers whose works have until now remained obscure and inaccessible. Ranging across manifold languages and cultures, and addressing every crucial theme of modern Indian history—race, religion, language, caste, gender, colonialism, nationalism, economic development, violence, and nonviolence—Makers of Modern India provides an invaluable roadmap to

anuscript Found in Accra by Paulo Coelho: The latest novel from the #1 internationally best-selling author of The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho. There is nothing wrong with anxiety. Although we cannot control God’s time, it is part of the human condition to want to receive the thing we are waiting for as quickly as possible. Or to drive away whatever is causing our fear.... Anxiety was born in the very same moment as mankind. And since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it-just as we have learned to live with storms. The premise of Coelho’s latest work, “Manuscript Found in Accra,’’ has some basis in historical fact and allows the skeptical reader to hope that the author has written another of his trademark alchemical blends of pop fiction and pop philosophy. In a cave in Egypt in 1945, two brothers discover an urn full of papyruses, most of which wind up at the Coptic Museum in Cairo, and one of which is acquired by the Carl Jung Institute.

KATHMANDUFUTSAL EXPERIENCE

As the capital strives to be a concrete jungle, the empty grounds we grew up playing football, have become playgrounds for construction workers and their machines. It seems these buildings have mushroomed overnight. Nevertheless, “Futsal Reign” has begun and with plenty of futsal arena erected around town, futsal fever has gone viral. Although the TNM team isn’t a regular at the pitch, the fever is beginning to spread. While in search of an arena for our cure we came across Kathmandu Futsal, a newly established arena promising to deliver the finest experience. TNM team geared up for some Futsal from our busy work schedule. Come kick off time, we were facing the Kathmandu Fustal home team. With the TNM players lacking the technical skills and stamina, the more versatile players from Kathmandu Futsal pretty much ripped us apart. The game depended on quick decisions whilst under pressure and in tight spaces just like the decisions made in our office. Yes, we lost but on the plus side, we managed to burn some calories. However, the game was more of a team building activity as opposed to a competitive game. The experience did bring us closer for which we would like to thank Kathmandu Futsal for the great experience. After the game TNM caught up with Kathmandu 86

Futsal team and asked them about what made the their view on the futsal scene in Nepal. TNM: What inspired you to open a futsal arena? KF: We believe it’s the love for football. But frankly speaking it was an evening of futsal at one of the arena around town persuaded us to open an arena. Seeing futsal bring people together and help bring a smile on their faces regardless of whatever was going on in their life might be the key reason for Kathmandu Futsal to open. TNM: Besides Kathmandu Futsal what else are you engaged in? KF: Mr Dipen Adhikari and Mr Ujjwal Aryal are the founders of Kathmandu Futsal. Besides the arena Mr. Adhkiari works at ABC television and Mr Aryal works at Bottlers Nepal. TNM: What do you think about the growing futsal scene? KF: We are overwhelmed with the positive response seen from futsal. The growing scene has made arena’s to organize frequent tournaments. With tournaments offering prize money positive vibes can be felt among futsal enthusiasts. If this positive vibe is well maintained,

futsal may be the next big sport. TNM: Where does futsal stand compared to other sports in our country? KF: Football has always been a Nepalese favourite and with the rise in futsal , we believe it definitely has a bright future. We believe the game can flourish if the government introduced futsal in national sports events. If all things work in the favour for futsal, we may see Nepal in the World Futsal Championship. TNM: What unique feature does Kathmandu Futsal provide compared to other arena? KF: Basically what differentiates us is the well-managed space for the audience to watch the game conveniently and the restaurant serving delicious food. TNM: What are your future plans? KF: With the success of our arena here at Dhobighat,Lalitpur we’re planning to expand Kathmandu futsal at different places in near future. TNM: Few words to our readers. KF: Everyone is welcome to Kathmandu Futsal to have a good time and burn some calories. (laughing) fb.me/TNM.Magazine
