WELCOME TO FALL 2019! A note from the Chief Librarian

Welcome to our Kamloops Libraries’ featured programs for fall 2019! I’m delighted to highlight a few of our many offerings. Writer in Residence The TNRL will be hosting its first writer in residence program beginning in September through to early December. Acclaimed mystery and crime writer Deryn Collier will be supporting our community of writers of all ages – from novice and first timers putting the pen to paper through to professional writers wishing to hone their skills. Ms. Collier will deliver workshops and will work one-on-one with emergent writers through manuscript consultations. Learn more about our WIR at deryncollier.com. Deryn will also be a featured presenter at Words Alive Kamloops, our local festival for readers and writers, September 20—22nd, 2019. Secwepemctsín Language Workshops In celebration of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, and back by popular demand, Ted Gottfriedson, Language and Culture Department Manager for Tk’emlups te Secwépemc teaches the basics of the language at both Kamloops libraries this fall. See page 6 for details. Virtual Reality The Library’s newest partnership will debut on Thursday, October 17th at the Kamloops Library. Together with the Secwépemc Museum, the TNRD Film Commission, and the ARC/K Project, the TNRL will kick-off programming using the Oculus Quest Virtual Reality system. Experience historical artifacts from the Secwépemc Museum or step back in time with the #2141 Steam train! You decide. New Programs Among the newest events in this guide are a Teen Dungeons & Dragons club, a new book club for adults which will read books from a different theme each season, and an evening Pyjama Storytime for youngsters ages 3-5. Author Talks This fall, we proudly present Michael Sasges, writer of Once Well Beloved: Remembering a Bri sh Columbia Great War Sacrifice (coming October 2019) whose work pays homage to the fallen of the Nicola Valley during World War I; Fred Reid, coauthor of the forthcoming book Captured by Fire: Surviving Bri sh Columbia's New Wildfire Reality and Leo Burstyn, who wrote Testaments from Kiev: A Family in the Shadow of the Iron Curtain (2018). More information is found on page 6. We look forward to seeing you at these and other events! Your feedback is always welcome through our “Ask a Librarian” feature at www.tnrl.ca. Kind regards, Judy Moore, Chief Librarian
