This year we’ve extended our holiday recipes to include Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco De Mayo, 4th of July, Halloween, and Thanksgiving as well as our traditional Christmas and New Year’s holidays we’ve always featured. We hope you will find this booklet useful throughout the entire year. We hope their stories will touch your heart as they do ours. Our thanks to each restaurant that contributes to our booklet each year we couldn’t do it without you! We also extend our heartfelt thanks to those that work each day to enforce impaired driving laws and curb underage drinking in our communities. We extend our best wishes for each holiday and may we all work together to achieve the goal of zero fatalities on our roadways.

This is difficult to write….. My son, Sam “Gator” Shetrone, was killed by a drunk driver on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 3:15 a.m. He was the only passenger in his friend Donald’s car. Donald was also killed. They were both just 24 years old. They were traveling east out of Inverness in Citrus County on Highway 44 headed for Denny’s in Wildwood. At the same time, a Gainesville man was attending his annual employee Christmas party after work. After a night of partying and drinking, he got in his car and headed south on I-75. He exited at Wildwood and headed west on Highway 44. His van sideswiped the vehicle traveling east in front of Donald’s car and then, traveling at approximately 65 mph, he slammed head-on into Donald’s little sports car. The car burst into flames. The dashboard hit Sam in the chest, breaking bones and puncturing arteries in his heart. He lived for a short time. Some brave onlookers tried but were unable to get Sam out of the vehicle, and he, too, died. I was living alone when the State Trooper and Medical Examiner came to my door and asked many questions about Sam and the jewelry he might have been wearing. He was burned beyond recognition, but they thought it was my son Sam in the passenger seat.

I cannot put into words how Sam’s death has affected my life or the lives of Sam’s mother, his older brother Jason, his older sister Holly, or other family members or friends. My heart was so broken that day, and it has not healed. As for the man who caused so much grief and tragedy that early Saturday morning … he is currently serving 30 years in prison. He caused serious pain for many people. John Shetrone, Sam’s father

At 10:50 a.m. on June 26, 2007, I was almost killed while returning to the office following a meeting at church. While making a left turn on a green light, I was hit by a 19-year-old male who was late to work and ran the red light. In addition to speeding, he was high on marijuana and Xanax. He never touched the brakes, and his SUV, traveling at 50 mph, hit my car directly on the driver’s door. Fortunately, an off-duty fireman was cutting grass nearby and immediately reacted to the crash. He was able to assess the severity of my injuries and cleared my windpipe so I could breathe. When my husband arrived on the scene minutes later, he was informed by one of the rescue personnel that I was dead and that the accident investigation had been assigned to Homicide detectives. The off-duty fireman, a family friend, then recognized my husband and realized it was me he had helped in the wreck. Fortunately, the quick actions of the fireman kept me alive, and he later received an award for his actions. I was cut out of the car with the “Jaws of Life” and taken by helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital. In the helicopter, they diagnosed that I had a dissected aorta which, if ruptured, would result in almost instant death. At the hospital, the doctor told my husband that I was very severely injured and my chance of

survival was about 20%. I did die on the operating table but I was resuscitated. I suffered a closed head trauma, a dissected aorta, broken ribs, a spinal injury, a collapsed lung, a sliced liver, and a perforated bowel and bladder. Both pelvises were shattered front and back, and I had a compound fracture of the right leg and a broken left ankle. The doctors were able to address all my injuries except the aorta, and I was then kept in a drug-induced coma for six weeks so my movement would not rupture the aorta. The bleeding in my brain stabilized. My five children and family flew in from all over the country, started a prayer chain that stretched to Asia, and immediately had a sign placed above my bed in intensive care, “Miracle in Progress.” After six weeks at St. Joseph’s, I was transferred to Northside Hospital where surgeons completed placement of a thoracic aortic stint. I was then transferred to Tampa General Hospital for a month of in-patient rehabilitation. Four months after returning home, I was readmitted to St. Joseph’s, where three of my lower back vertebrae were fused and a cage inserted.

I probably will never be able to work again, I live in constant pain, and my rehabilitation from this crash will be a lifelong process. My life and the lives of my husband, our five children, and other family members have been forever changed by the actions of a person driving under the influence. The other driver walked away from the crash without a scratch, but I survived because of my will to live, great doctors and nurses, prayer by a loving supportive family, and the grace of God. God gives us free will, but I truly believe it was no coincidence that the off duty fireman was nearby; Tampa General’s Emergency room was full so the helicopter was diverted to a closer St. Joseph’s; the helicopter nurse who correctly diagnosed the dissected aorta – otherwise, I would have bled to death. And the appropriate specialists were on duty at the hospital at that time.

My recollection of this story ends as I was leaving work to go to the church for the meeting and begins again at Tampa General Rehab. Words cannot adequately describe the stress, anxiety, and pain my family and I have been through. As I try to make sense of why this happened to me, I believe it will be meaningful if just one individual who read this story understands what their driving under the influence can do to another person and their family and doesn’t get behind the wheel. Sparing other people and families may be the blessing and gift I can give from this experience.

On April 12, 2007, I received a phone call from my son’s mother telling me that our son Chris, 24 at the time, had been involved in a car crash just a few blocks from his home; she did not know at that time any details of the crash or who may have been hurt. Immediately, I drove to the accident scene. As I got closer, I could see red and blue lights, and my body started to tremble. I had no idea that in the next few minutes my life and that of so many others would be changed forever. It was a parent’s worst nightmare. Upon witnessing the devastation, I expected the very worst. A deputy took me to a patrol car where my son, Chris, was sitting in the back seat. He smelled of alcohol. Later, he was escorted to a local hospital to be checked over, but he only had a few scratches on him. He was not arrested that evening. The next morning, I received my second worst phone call. I was informed that one of the passengers in the other vehicle,13-year-old Shelby Hackman of Brooksville, had lost her life in my son’s horrific crash, all because he was driving impaired. In June 2007, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Chris, and I was asked by the Florida Highway Patrol to turn him in to them. As a parent, this was

the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. To watch your son being read his rights was indescribable. Chris was charged with DUI Manslaughter, and other charges were pending. The handcuffs clinked, and Chris was taken away. No parent should ever have to witness his child being carted off in handcuffs; it is beyond heart breaking. All I could think about was the family of the 13-yearold girl that was killed. How could my son be so selfish? He stole someone’s life for one lousy night of partying and the decision to drive drunk. In March 2008, we went to court for the final time for my son to meet his fate. For two hours, we sat in the courtroom and listened as Shelby’s family and friends spoke and told the story of Shelby. When the grandmother took the stand, she placed on the judge’s desk a picture of her granddaughter with her last lock of hair from the hospital. There was not a dry eye in the courtroom. After both families spoke and Chris read a letter telling the family how sorry he was for his ac-

tions, the judge made his decision: one year in prison for every year Shelby was alive - 13 years for a firsttime offender - and 3 years of probation. His driver’s license was revoked forever. As parents, we watched as Chris was handcuffed and taken away. No hugs, no handshakes, just a nod to say goodbye. My family spends our Sundays visiting Chris in prison. We drive 300 miles round trip just to visit. On the way home I always think about the visit and my son, and it brings a slight smile, and then my thoughts turn to Shelby’s parents and their friends. I was able to visit and talk to my son, but they will never be able to talk or visit with Shelby. All this destruction from one person, my son, who decided he could get behind the wheel and drink and drive. Parents, don’t think that it cannot happen to you. Today, I talk to parents and teens and tell my story and relay the effects of drinking and driving. Hopefully, I am making a difference by sharing my sad but true story. Hopefully, my story has made an impact on your life. Please, don’t drink and drive. For more information, check out www.drivingsober.net Barry Marcone

On February 25, 2006, we began living every parent’s nightmare. Two law enforcement officers delivered the news that our daughter, Laura Gorman, had lost her life in a car crash. Laura had been a passenger in a car traveling on I-275. Just moments away from the Pinellas Bayway exit, the car crashed. There were no other vehicles involved. Laura died at the scene; she was just 18 years old. Two years and two months later, the driver of the car in which she was riding pleaded no contest to a DUI manslaughter charge and was sentenced to four years in prison followed by two years of probation. The impact of Laura’s death and the turmoil that followed have altered our lives forever. Nothing will ever be the same. We laid Laura to rest, but we will never be able to bury the often overwhelming feeling of sadness and longing for her presence. It has been a long journey of pain and grief knowing we will never see our precious daughter again. As any parent knows who has suffered the loss of a beloved child, the heartache is unimaginable. Since the horrible crash, it has been our wish as a family to mourn privately and to focus our attention on Laura’s younger sister. After being confronted with the traumatic news that her only

sibling had been killed, she needed and deserved all our love, care, and support. Shortly before her death, Laura wrote a college essay describing her relationship with her sister. We cannot think of anything more powerful or more compelling than Laura’s own words. She wrote: “Over the past summer, my sister and I spent almost every day together. She is 10 years old now and finally beginning to understand how the world works … it was nice to get to spend so much time with her right before I went to college…. Ten years down the road, our age difference, which seems so big now, will seem like nothing. Those days are going to be great.” Like so many others who have been lost due to underage drinking and driving, our daughter Laura had everything to live for. She was a bright, beautiful, and caring individual who brought a great deal of joy into our lives. A hard-working and conscientious student, she graduated from high school with a string of awards and accomplishments. She loved cheerleading and also spent many hours as a teen volunteer for

Hospice. She earned an Honors Scholarship from her college and a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. Her life held enormous potential; she was someone who had the promise and compassion to make a difference. Her death is not only a monumental loss for her family, but for the community as well. We are left only with wondering what might have been. We share Laura’s story now with hope that it will send a strong message regarding the 100% preventable crime of drunk driving and ultimately might help spare another family from the irreversible devastation we have endured. For this reason, in honor of our daughter Laura Gorman and all victims of drunk driving, we urge you to drive responsibly and wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Designated Drivers Save Lives Designated drivers have saved nearly 50,000 lives and spared many more thousands of people from suffering injury from drunk driving. Each year, over 73 million Americans either serve as a designated driver or are driven home by one. A designated driver helps friends and family avoid embarrassment, keep their driver’s license, avoid fines, stay out of jail, and prevent senseless injury and death.

There is no stigma to abstaining because the designated driver is considered an important member of the group. Being a designated driver can also help legitimize a personal choice not to drink. The designated driver approach prevents driving under any level of impairment because that person consumes no alcohol. It doesn’t require a driver or passenger to determine if a person is too impaired to drive.

On January 23, 2006, we lost our beloved son, Patrick Cooley, to a crash involving a drunk driver. It is a day that has changed our lives forever. Patrick was the youngest of our three sons and was just 23 years old. A college student and personnel trainer, Patrick was known for his handsome looks and beautiful smile, a smile that could light up a room. Patrick’s death left in its wake a trail of unfulfilled dreams, broken hearts, and unrealized promise - all because someone chose to drink and drive without giving a thought to the consequences. As a result, one family lives on, dealing with their grief, constantly aware of the absence of their loved one whom they hold in their thoughts, oh so dear, while another family wrestles with the reality of their loved one locked away in prison for many years to come. Patrick is now united with his grandfather, a grandfather he had never met, who also was killed by a drunk driver when I was very young. Both losses are difficult to think about, but if by doing so we can dissuade others from drinking and driving or cause others to prevent their friends, family members, or associates from getting behind the steering wheel of a vehicle when it’s obvious they shouldn’t, it’s a difficulty worth bearing.

Please have a safe, responsible, and joyous holiday season. Merry Christmas! Wishing you the very best, Michael, Mary, and the rest of the Cooley Family

Community Traffic Safety Team Program The Community Traffic Safety Team Program is a multi-disciplined federal, State, and local government-endorsed program developed to reduce the number of traffic crashes that occur on Florida roadways. The program was created in response to federal legislation (the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1990), which calls for local participation and solutions to traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities on local roadways. Our membership consists of professionals in four disciplines: Law Enforcement, Engineering, Emergency Services, and Education. We possess the resources and skills to directly impact the epidemic problems that Florida faces on our roadways. Armed with carefully-developed missions, goals and objectives, our committees undertake projects and activities and serve as a resource to any and all communities, local government agencies, and roadway users to assist in the reduction of traffic crashes and the related injuries and fatalities on our roadways.
