Foreword
Welcome to the eighteenth issue of the Broughtons Magazine. I am extremely pleased to be able to introduce myself as the newly appointed Managing Director of Broughtons, having joined the Company just two months ago. Although I have worked for nearly 30 years in the motor trade, this will be my first association with Bentley and Aston Martin, and I am delighted to be involved with such exciting and dynamic brands. I very much look forward to meeting as many of our customers as possible over the forthcoming months and welcoming you personally to our dealerships in Cheltenham, Pangbourne and Byfleet.

Bentley ever The Bentley Continental Supersports On March 3rd at the 2009 International Geneva Motor Show, Bentley revealed its fastest, most powerful production car ever. Delivering supercar performance, this new model is very much the extreme Bentley. The Continental Supersports also affirms Bentley’s environmental commitment with the launch of its first FlexFuel performance car.

With so much to choose from, where best to look for those pieces that will make you feel special, yet are practical and fit for purpose? All too often we go for a safe option The Louis Vuitton monogram is a familiar sight among the luxury travel set, and with good reason: this is excellent quality and extremely durable luggage. Why else would it be so popular with the great and the good? However there are plenty of other collections out there that will set you apart from the crowd. LOUIS VUITTON Left: Pegase Monogramme this piece costs between £1000-£1600 dependant on size. Right: Keepall 60 strap this piece costs £650.
Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush favour a Tanner Krolle holdall (£895) - the leather has been skived down to make it as light as possible, but it’s an updated version of a classic Victorian design. Princes William and Harry used Tanner Krolle school trunks and one of the largest commissions came from Saudi Arabia’s late King Fahd bin Abdul Azziz Al Saud. All Tanner Krolle’s luggage is made in the company’s Shoreditch, London factory. TANNER KROLLE Handcrafted top frame Holdalls in English bridle hide with spring top closure. Available in five colors. &chic Travel can be tough on luggage – and if you were one of
the unlucky Terminal 5 travellers last summer whose bags arrived at their destination after a round trip to Spain on the back of a lorry, you probably want something durable.
Maxwell Scott’s luxury travel bags (approximately £560) are designed to look elegant yet endure everyday scratches and scrapes. These beautiful leather holdalls offer a luxurious fusion of British Design with Italian craftsmanship, and will be long cherished. If you are looking for no-nonsense business luggage that looks great and adds a touch of class, Kenneth Cole’s Reaction collection (approximately $450) is for you. In black and muted colours, this luggage is professional but also sturdy enough for some mild adventures. Punning names (Wheel Estate, Jack the Zipper, I’ll Be Right Bag, etc) add a little levity too.

Or take a trip to Longchamp, one of the most respected luggage brands and have a look at designer Jeremy Scott’s This Is Not My Bag range – a one-of-a-kind collection of suitcases, carryons and computer cases with Jeremy Scott’s signature humour stenciled on them. You’ll never again have to worry about someone mistaking your bags for their own on the carousel. However, if you really want the world to look on in awe at you and your luggage, then you will have to splash out $20,000 to buy the Henk suitcase. It is fashioned variously from red Italian burl, black ebony, horse hair, magnesium, aluminum, titanium, carbon fibre, parachute fabric and the finest leathers! either as schools are very keen to organise trips abroad for history, geography and modern foreign language purposes. Pick up any school’s newsletter and you’ll find details of groups of students trekking off to some far flung destination.
IPSOS Mori A recent survey by IPSOS Mori found Independent education to be more popular than ever. Nearly three in five of parents would send their child to Independent school if they could afford it. This is the highest level since the survey began in 1997, up 20% on the last survey in 2004. While ‘better standards of education’ continues to be the prime factor for parents wanting to send their children to Independent schools, ‘better discipline’ more than doubled in popularity rising to second place above ‘smaller class sizes’.
Is there help with fees? More than one in three pupils at ISC schools receive assistance with fee costs with four out of five of these awards coming directly from the school itself. Indeed, most ISC schools offer bursaries, scholarships or both. Scholarships tend to be linked to the ability of the child whether it is academic, sporting, music or drama. The best way to ascertain availability and eligibility is to contact the school directly. They are more than happy to discuss with you the options available. Bursaries, on the other hand, tend to be means-assessed on a financial basis and will require the parent or guardian to fill out a financial declaration to establish whether the student meets the necessary criteria. The ISC website - www.isc.co.uk - is a great resource for information on independent schools in the UK, and can be used to find schools local to you that match your criteria. By clicking ‘School Search’ you can also find out if the school offers bursaries and/or scholarships.
So why choose an Independent School? Education isn’t a one-size-fits-all affair and thankfully independent schools come in all shapes and sizes. The independent sector gives parents the opportunity to choose a school that is right for their child. Whether it is the breadth and flexibility of the curriculum that appeals or perhaps the extra curricular activities, you can be assured that your child will receive a well rounded education helping them to achieve their full potential.

sset classes and the cycle As recently as 2007, economic commentators and policy-makers were happily debating what the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, termed the Great Moderation. After the various dislocations of the 20th Century – wars, great depressions and great inflations – the volatility of growth and inflation in the US and other economies seemed to have declined sustainably. So confident were central bankers in this new paradigm that the key question was how much the Great Moderation stemmed from enlightened policy-making or from less direct forces, such as the spread of the market economy to Eastern Europe and China.

The town itself is known for its wealthy trading links and was once a thriving market town for wool and cattle traders across Scotland. Today the town retains its grandeur and is a popular area to live in with close proximity to Scotland’s major cities and six championship golf courses its surrounded by the stunning scenery of the fertile Strathearn Valley. Knock Castle is a stunning baronial mansion property which sits in an elevated position in extensive gardens overlooking the town. It was once the home of the Caledonian MacBrayne shipping magnates and was built by leading architect John Honeywell who was a partner in the same firm as Rennie McIntosh. The hotel was bought by the Henderson Group, a successful Inverness based company with other business interests including helicopter charter, property management and construction, in December 2007. It was the conclusion of an extensive three year search for the family run firm. Since then they have spent over £1.5 million in restoring the property back to its former glory, highlighting many of its original features which include a fine oak staircase, wood panelled rooms, turrets and stained glass feature windows. They have also added a new contemporary perspective to the property which now includes 17 individually styled bedrooms many of which are now executive, deluxe castle rooms and suites. Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg and NLV Solar AG, a pioneer in photovoltaics and accumulator technology, have joined forces to create the ‘NLV Quant’. The brainchild of this marriage of power and energy is a four-seater solar electric car. Protect your Bentley with
Over 2,700 vehicles are stolen every day throughout Europe. Over 50% of these stolen vehicles are never recovered. 85% of vehicles were stolen with the car keys.
As a Bentley owner, driving your Bentley should be an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, the statistics on the left make intimidating reading as car thieves are just as keen to get behind the wheel of your Bentley as you are. We all leave ourselves vulnerable to the experience of car crime on a regular basis. Having your Bentley valet parked or leaving your vehicle unattended increases the risk – making installation of NavTrak ADR a necessity. The NavTrak ADR system is the only approved vehicle tracking system for all Bentley models. The system provides extra reassurance by giving you the maximum chance of recovering your vehicle if stolen. NavTrak ADR has been specifically designed to work in conjunction with an ADR card (Automatic Driver Recognition). The ADR card and vehicle key should be kept separate from each other at all times. Should the ADR card be absent whilst the car is moving, a silent alert is automatically sent to the NavTrak Secure Operating Centre who will immediately contact you to confirm whether your Bentley is moving legally or if it has been stolen. The system will detect a vehicle being lifted or towed away even when the ignition is switched off and performs a regular self-diagnostic check to ensure that it is working correctly.

Set in 260 acres of English countryside but only 40 minutes from central London. The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club is a magnificent venue - voted one of England’s most beautiful settings by Harpers & Queen. It was during the summer of 1985 that Bryan Morrison past the ‘For Sale’ sign to Ascot Cottage Stables. Curiosity overcame him and he drove in and into a situation that was utter chaos - broken fencing, dilapidated buildings, hedge rows out of control, ditches and ponds full with everything that the mind could imagine and a race track fence that was more ‘down’ than ‘up’. Undeterred, his imagination started to run wild as he envisaged polo fields, pony lines, stables, clubhouse and more importantly a fantastic place to be during the sunny summer afternoons with his friends playing

Better by design Why great marques don’t happen by chance Across all industries, from luxury cars and planes to jewellery and architecture, design is an integral consideration on the path to success. Brands and products that underpin their thinking with sound design
principles clearly out-perform those that don’t – design makes the difference between average and amazing. Design and creativity can be positively applied to any company in any industry, the results are here to be seen within this magazine. Companies and products that are successful invest in design, and it’s one investment that will definitely yield a return. Take any prominent brand or coveted product that comes to mind and consider it’s success – it’s undoubtedly due to the skills of a design team.
“At Toast, the design process, and maximising ROI is fundamental to everything we do for our clients.” Toasts’ capability to deliver big ideas and fresh creativity is tempered only
by our ability to apply a considered and tested process. This creative process not only allows great design solutions to be developed but ensures
an efficient and effective application. Together, creativity and control ensure that the best solutions are delivered on time and on budget, maximising success and returns.
So whatever the challenge, design is the key to success.

employee profile
Paul Burrows General Manager for Bentley Pangbourne Born in Winchester in 1968, Paul was the youngest of seven children and has spent most of his life living in and around Hampshire. As a young boy, Paul always had a real passion for sports cars but coming from a very humble upbringing meant that he could only ever look and dream and not touch. After leaving college, he spent the next year working for his older brother as a labourer with his ground-working and construction company. Deciding that this was not the long term career he wished to pursue, Paul saw a job advertised as a trainee accountant at a Fiat, Lancia and
after joining BMW the Directors of Clover Leaf received an offer that they could not refuse from Appleyard PLC and this brought to a close Paul’s nine year stint at Clover Leaf Cars as the new owners had a disagreement with BMW and the contract was terminated. Paul then successfully applied to join Lancaster PLC at one of their BMW dealerships in Southampton and was there for one year before being promoted to head up the sales team at Lancaster Aston Martin and Jaguar in Sevenoaks, Kent. This was a very enjoyable time in his career as he joined at the time that Aston Martin launched the all new DB7 and this was the
Alfa Romeo dealership in Basingstoke. Successful in his application, Paul started out on a seven year accountancy career with Clover Leaf Cars, culminating in promotion to Group Accountant and becoming a part-qualified Certified Accountant. When Clover Leaf took over a VW / Audi dealership in Henley on Thames, Paul applied to take over the vacant Sales Manager’s job in order to further his career and gain valuable experience. The Regent Touch By Simon Veness
In the cosseted world of cruising and cruise ships, there are myriad claims for luxury and ultra-luxury. After all, sea-going style and elegance has been the milieu of the rich and famous for more than 100 years.
Y
ou could be forgiven, therefore, for believing any modern maritime journey would therefore come with the requisite deluxe trappings, an all-inclusive realm of guaranteed sixstar quality and lavishness. However, while the claims may be easy, finding the right level of distinction and indulgence is not. Which is why the Regent Seven Seas Cruises experience is so welcome. For highly-personalised, all-inclusive travel complemented by the finest service and cuisine, no-one genuinely does it better. From top to bottom, Regent voyages are designed for those who seek true luxury and impeccable service combined with unadulterated, authentic discovery in some of the most provocative destinations in the world. The ultra-modern, three-ship fleet is a true paragon of sailing excellence, whether it is on an inaugural call in West Africa during one of their stunning World Cruises; penguin-watching along the glaciers of Antarctica during the ’Circle South America’; or witnessing Europe or Alaska’s most beloved destinations. Regent offers adventure and
60
exploration, with the softly-whispered promise to take you there in the most heavenly way imaginable. There is no false modesty here, either. The company’s claim that “guests will find a place where luxury is comfortable and simplicity is elegant” is borne out to the nth degree. These days, space, choice and time are the key components of an all-inclusive cruise, with no hidden extras and every detail taken care of. The ships therefore boast sumptuously spacious suites with marble appointed bathrooms and teak decked balconies; a choice of sensational fine dining, including the superb Signatures restaurant by the famed Le Cordon Bleu; and the kind of graceful, effortless service that knows what a guest wants almost before they know it themselves. Added to all this opulence, guests can ensure their shoreside excursions truly are one-of-a-kind, lifetime experiences with the company’s exclusive Travel Concierge Service. Whether it is a private photography tour in Patagonia, an exclusive Chef's Luncheon and Wine Cellar Tour or cruising the Yangtze River, Regent provide their guests with unique, unmatched opportunities.
Then, in 2010, Regent guests can enjoy a multitude of new perspectives and new adventures, taking their pick from:
New Horizons On the all-balcony, all-suite Seven Seas Mariner, guests will be able to explore the exotica of novel ports of call like Odessa, Sevastopol, Haifa and Limassol, or sail into Venice to enjoy unparalleled views from a private balcony. In the autumn, there is almost the ultimate in ocean-going adventure as Mariner embarks on her Discovery Cruise, navigating the Indian Ocean from Bollywood film sets to Frenchinfluenced Mauritius and Reunion, before heading for the samba and salsa beats of Rio de Janeiro.
Extra Style Seven Seas Navigator undergoes a refined restyle in January. Her 245 suites and intimate public areas will become even more a sanctuary of the ultra-deluxe for their discerning habitués, while she then embarks on her Springtime Panama Canal cruise before her firstever Alaska season in the summer. Put simply, there will be no more refined vehicle in 2010 for exploring the great Alaskan wilderness than this Regent beacon of virtue.
Regent’s ultra-luxury promise consists of… • FREE Shore Excursions on ALL dates on all bookings made before 30th September 2009 • NEW Reduced Fares • The Regent Price Promise, a preferential rate of $1.95 = £1.00. That’s a 20-25% saving on ALL cruise fares made before 30th June 2009 • All-inclusive Fares
All-inclusive features… • NEW for 2010 – FREE shore excursions on ALL 2010 dates (book before 30th September 2009) • NEW for 2010 – Butler service in C category suites and above • All gratuities • House champagne and fresh fruit in your suite on arrival on board
More Choice Celebrate world cultures with Seven Seas Voyager and discover multi-faceted Africa. Guests can visit fascinating destinations such as Kenya, South Africa and Namibia before heading north to Benin, Togo, Ghana and The Gambia. During the summer, Voyager will be based in Europe to allow explorations of the stunning Norwegian fjords of Norway or historic Baltic cities. Then, in the autumn, Voyager makes maiden calls to Haifa, Ashdod and Limassol. Alternatively, the siren lure of the Western Mediterranean offers delights closer to home, with a cruise along the Cote d’Azur or the shores of Tuscany in that guaranteed Regent style.
Finally, 2010 will see the introduction of more all-inclusive features, a multi-million dollar extensive fleet-wide renovation and even more value for money, thus delivering the best possible experience in the ultra-luxury market, without cutting our renowned and expected standards of service. A Regent balcony suite starts from just £1,447pp*.
So why wait? There has never been a better time to book a Regent Cruise!
• All drinks, including soft drinks, fine wines, champagne and spirits (Premium brands included) • All governmental fees, taxes and service charges • All on board activities including expert guest lectures, theatre performance, day time entertainment and fitness programmes (excluding spa treatments, casino, laundry, telephone and internet connection) • Fresh fruit and soft drinks replenished in your suite daily

Every two minutes, somewhere in the UK, someone is diagnosed with cancer. That diagnosis, however you decide to deal with it, will significantly change your life. You may face anger, denial, depression, guilt or lack of self belief. You may want to radically alter the way you live, or you may want everything to stay the same. There are as many different emotions surrounding cancer as there are types of cancer. What Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres offer
