SUMMER 2012

Six weeks ago a drought was formally declared d across most of the UK. As this announcement came in April – traditionally the month of ‘April Showers’ – it came as no surprise to the cynical UK population that we then had to endure 6 weeks of extraordinarily heavy, unrelenting rain! The western, Atlantic-facing half of Britain generally has more rain than it can cope with, while very little of it apparently percolates across to the crop-growing by BVAA Director, Rob Bartlett east. In a country so incredibly narrow, the solution appears simple – a pipeline to move the excess to where it’s needed. ‘Ah but it’s not that easy’ I hear you cry! Er, well frankly, yes it is. Just because it sounds difficult, it doesn’t mean the difficulties are insurmountable. We manage to pipe gas from Russia all the way to the UK. Much of it is hot, sour, and very high pressure – yet with comparative ease we shift it thousands of miles – even across the Channel - to the place where it is needed. Sub-sea pipelines can be sat on the sea-bed, some trenched and filled under the sea, others innovative constructions of super-duplex pipes sat within outer pipes. In Libya, a country with more challenges than most, they managed to construct their great man-made river, crossing thousands of kilometres of the Sahara desert, bringing 6.5 million cubic metres of fresh water every day to their coastal cities. The UK though, it appears, has a problem in constructing a comparatively tiny stretch of overland pipeline, made from simple, common materials, to carry a low pressure, completely innocuous fluid that everyone needs. This country is brimming with Is it a tidal wave of water, or paper, that technical expertise as well we fear? as water! We have the best engineering minds coupled with the very best valve manufacturers and suppliers. It should not be beyond the wit of man to design and implement such a very simple solution. The Libyan pipeline – designed by contractors the UK valve companies regularly supply – and which has a humongous diameter, is reported to have cost US $25b to install. In the UK we are about to spend £32b on a slightly faster train that will deliver passengers 20 or so minutes earlier at their destination. Upon reflection, I can only assume the purpose of the speedier train is to deliver parched south/eastern folk to the wetter north and west, when they run out of water! News Mad Hatters How far can you go wearing a BVAA Hat?

BVAA Training breaks records – again!

April Valve Training at BVAA HQ

The BVAA Hat continues its travels, this time in some truly ‘mad’ conditions! Pictured (shivering) are Rhys Jones, Simon James, Sian Elvis and Nathan Adams of Hobbs Valve on the ‘Thunderwalk’ – a 24 hour, 54 mile Charity walk in the Brecon Beacons. Team ‘Rhys Lightening’ donned BVAA hats for the occasion. BVAA were delighted to make a donation to the team’s JustGiving site in aid of Noah’s Ark Appeal, a Children’s hospital in Wales. If you would like to make a donation see www.justgiving.com/RhysLightening Our congratulations to VU reader Lee Tunnicliffe who correctly spotted that Graham Lomax of Polyflor was pictured at the seaside village of Staithes in North Yorkshire, England. A £50 donation has been made to the NSPCC. Hat or Brolly? SUMMER 2012

BVAA’s valve and actuator Training Courses have once again broken records for attendances! The new, recently expanded and re-kitted training facility at our Banbury headquarters was once again full to overflowing for many courses in April. Additional dates have just been published for June – which amazingly are already filling up fast! Further dates have also been arranged for October, and BVAA continues to offer in-house courses for customers at their own premises – an also expanding activity area. These cost-effective solutions are particularly sought after by larger manufacturers, major customers and contractors, even authoritative bodies. BVAA has strategically expanded its training function and we are delighted with the highly complementary feedback we receive from customers. See www.bvaa. org.uk/training for further details.

Seals WG BVAA’s Seals working Group met on 6th March, under the chairmanship of Adrian Jefferies (James Walker) and completed important work on the revisions of the ISO 15848 Fugitive Emission standards (now subject to a full revision), developments with relevant API standards, BSI activity and of course BVAA’s own Seal Training courses.

A combined meeting of the BVAA and BSI Actuator working groups was held on 27th March at BVAA’s HQ in Banbury. Main agenda items were interface standards, actuators standards in development in CEN and ISO, the BVAA Gearboxes guide and BVAA’s draft repair code of practice. A sub-WG meeting to discuss the latter in more detail will take place in May. If you are interested in actuator or valve interface standards and would like to participate, contact rob@bvaa.org.uk

Full house at CTI

On 8th March BVAA’s Valve Working Group met at Castings Technology International at Rotherham. This was Peter Burnett’s (Heap & Partners) first meeting as the new Chair of the working group following the retirement of Geoff Newman. A busy agenda included a presentation by Dr Mike Ashton on the Replicast and Hipping processes, BSI and international standards developments, and an extensive debate on the proposed changes to the castings acceptance procedures in ISO 14313, upon which official UK input is being formulated. A detailed ‘Technical Hot Spot’ by Peter Churm on this topic is featured on page 74.

BVAA Grand Prix

Laurence Kettle (centre) comes out on top – this time.

The close proximity of an indoor Go Kart track to the BVAA HQ is proving to be quite a draw and cause of much entertainment and dispute among members! BVAA’s Steering Group held a short Grand Prix meeting

in March, where Laurence Kettle (Rotork) eventually emerged the victor. However some of the tactics used are still the subject of hot debate and recriminations. Grudge rematches will no doubt follow!

Mokveld’s Considerations in Designing HIPPS is to be understood as a synonym for controller or logic solver. The IEC however defines a ‘system’ as the complete loop, being the logic solver, initiators and final elements. HIPPS and other SIS therefore have to be primarily treated as a complete loop and should not be designed on separate component level. The gap left by the IEC 61508 regarding the mechanical components (valves, solenoids), has been patched by the introduction of the IEC 61511. The latter standard specifically refers to final elements and initiators. 1oo2 electronic HIPPS protecting ASME 600 installation against pressure from ASME 900 pipeline

HIPPS is an abbreviation for High Integrity (Pressure) Protection System, which is a specific application of a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) designed in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. The function of a HIPPS is to protect the downstream equipment against over-pressure by closing the source. Usually this is done by timely closing one or more dedicated safety shut-off valves to prevent further pressurization of the piping downstream of those valves. HIPPS has gained popularity over recent years, replacing pressure safety valves (PSV), blow down and flare systems. Although HIPPS has been used for more than a quarter of a century, design and implementation of HIPPS is still not as obvious as one might expect. The main reason for this is the way the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards are written. The Oil & Gas industry for years has been accustomed to work with prescriptive standards. Standards like API 6A and API RP series, ASTM, ASME precisely prescribe how to design and manufacture equipment, an installation, or material. IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 however are performance based standards. They describe the process to reach a solution rather than prescribing the solution itself. The IEC therefore leaves room for interpretation, which in some cases causes confusion or leads to over- or under-engineered solutions, thus requiring end-users to watch over their contractors and contractors to verify suppliers to assure that a safe system is installed. IEC 61508 handles the final elements only superficially and focuses on the logic solver. This leads to the common misunderstanding that the word ‘system’ 14

SUMMER 2012

Risk of under-specifying The misunderstanding that ‘system’ stands for controller and that a SIS can be designed on component level, is the cause for the biggest problem in the implementation of HIPPS. Namely the underspecification of mechanical components and the acceptance of component Safety Integrity Level (SIL) certification, instead of verification of the complete loop SIL.

A typical HIPPS safety loop

Certification doesn’t prove system is safe Another consequence of the Oil & Gas industry’s history of prescriptive standards, is the love for certificates. Certificates suggest they relieve the engineer from the responsibility to verify the ‘difficult to check’ performance of a component. A good example of this is the hazardous area classification and the related Ex certification. When the hazardous area is correctly classified any component with the right Ex certificate can be used in that area without further checking. Since PFD calculations, dependability of failure rates and the check if a component is fit for a certain SIL level is very complicated, the question for SIL certificates came very quickly from the industry. The issuance of ‘SIL certificates’ for components however has started the dangerous perception that buying certified equipment assures plant safety without further

verification. However for the same reason that an Ex i component does not protect against explosions when used in circuits without Ex i barriers, component SIL certificates do not assure the plant safety, nor that the SIL level for the ‘system’ is met. First we have to go back to the IEC. The IEC defines a SIL level, with its PFD and architecture, for a complete safety loop only and not for the subsystems. The IEC has no rules or specifications how to qualify a component for a certain SIL level, while the term SIL only applies to the complete system. Therefore one should ask how to obtain a SIL certificate if no rules to certify components exist? Or actually, why obtain a component certificate within the frame of a performance-based standard, where the words verification and validation of the ‘system’ are part of the foundation. Component manufacturers adapt to the questions from the market by assuming a certain architecture for the complete system of which the certifiable component is a part. Assumptions are made for common cause, proof test interval, typical process duty, and response times for which their failure rates are applicable. Based on assumptions a component is then certified, which naturally limits the applicability of the certificate. Dependability of failure rates is already a difficult concept; dependability of a certificate takes the word difficult to a completely different level. Failure rates obtained from operating experience in the nuclear industry does not mean that those failure rates are dependable

Final element is Mokveld’s axial on-off valve

and applicable in the Oil & Gas industry. Or closer to home, failure rates obtained from operating experience such as an isolation valve in an oil application does not qualify that valve for a fast stroking duty in a HIPPS in upstream gas service.

Belleville Springs is a member of the Springmasters® Group

Consultancy, Design, Manufacture and Distribution...

To assess the applicability of a SIL certificate, the report should be closely studied. In most cases the certificate’s only purpose is to serve as a justification for the failure rates provided by the manufacturer. In all cases the verification of the system’s overall PFD and the system’s architecture should fit the required SIL level of the system. Simply piling up certificates of components might result in a system which no longer fulfils the correct SIL level. With this article we try to reach awareness that responsible engineering is important, especially when it is considered that lives are at stake when a high SIL level HIPPS fails.

Tyco’s Expanded Testing Facility Setting the standard in steam test capabilities Tyco Valves & Controls has significantly expanded its state-of-the-art testing facility at its Mansfield, Massachusetts, USA location. Originally opened in 2010 following a $25m program of investment, Tyco has recently further improved the existing test boiler fleet and steam flow loop, including the addition of a new 2250 psig (155 barg) 350 horsepower boiler. This expansion enables Tyco to fully flow test products from any manufacturer up to pressures of 2000 psig (137 barg) with flow requirements of over 2 million lbs per hour (over 900,000 kg per hour) of saturated steam. Modularity of the facility also allows testing of straight through and angle type products with various inlet and outlet connections. “We have already worked with some major OEMs in the valves and controls industry to augment their nuclear program by providing product related testing,” comments Don Coons, Marketing Manager for Nuclear Power and Service, Tyco Flow Control. “The facility is available to any organization that needs to test equipment at high pressures and flow rates. With this expansion to incorporate higher pressures and short times needed between tests, we are unrivalled in our saturated steam testing capabilities.” The Mansfield facility offers testing resources well beyond the requirements for full-flow steam testing of equipment for the new Gen III and Gen III+ Nuclear Power reactors. With this capability, Tyco is able to test steam service equipment for full functionality and repeatability with ease. Since the test facility can regenerate quickly, full functional tests of the latest advanced Nuclear Main Steam Safety Valve products for the new generation of Nuclear Power reactors can be tested repeatedly within minutes. In addition to tracking pressure and temperature throughout the product operational cycle, other measurements can be tracked and recorded as required for any specific test. Fundamentally, the test arrangement and measurements taken can be customized to customers’ own specific needs. Alongside the expanded high pressure steam flow loop, Tyco also offers additional testing facilities at the Mansfield location. Product tests using air, steam (high flow, lower flow, high pressure and lower pressure) and water are also available from other test loops within the facility. Customer survey proves ® value of Midas Meter Customer survey proves value of Midas Meter® Through Valve Loss / Leak Detector By Ronald Simpson and Dave Anderson, Score Group plc

Non invasive valve leak detection receives the Midas touch from Score Group Plc. Score trainees carry out in-house familiarisation training with latest Midas Meter, more info at www.midasmeter.com

Since its launch, the Midas Meter® has helped Score Group plc’s customers to correctly identify problematic valves quickly and easily, thus minimising the safety risks, potential environmental impacts and costly efficiency losses which can be expected from leaking valves. A potential new customer contacted Score after Midas Meter® was recommended to them by an existing owner. The plant had nine valves located in very close proximity, on three identical trains, which were causing problems due to a long history of leakby during operations and shutdowns. Trouble shooting action plans were implemented to pin point the source of the known through valve leakage, however, these failed to provide a clear result. Firstly, the maintenance team tried thermography to find the leak, however, there was insufficient differential temperature observed across the valves in question, to properly identify the leak source. Next, the maintenance team deployed a general purpose acoustic measuring device to identify the leaks, however, since all three trains had high background noise / interference, this technique also failed. The Midas Meter® leak detection equipment was finally deployed, following the owner recommendation. Despite the extremely high background noise and turbulence around the valves, Midas Meter® was able 24

SUMMER 2012

to conclusively identify the two leaking valves on one train and target them for maintenance. Having the Midas Meter® as part of the initial plant trouble shooting plans would have saved the customer a great deal of time and effort, leading to significant cost savings in recurring remedial repair work and plant downtime. Based on their positive experience with MIDAS Meter®, the customer proceeded to purchase one. Give your plant maintenance and integrity teams the MIDAS TOUCH™, to help them with; t Troubleshooting t Condition based maintenance t Predictive maintenance ...whilst also providing major safety, environmental and cost saving benefits in both hazardous and nonhazardous areas.

Tyco’s Largest Ever Pneumatic Actuator Tyco Biffi has supplied its largest ever high torque pneumatic actuators, enabling high volume displacement with relatively quick closing times in low pressure applications. Weighing 14,000kg and measuring 6x2x3 metres, two ALGAS actuators were supplied for 46 inch, class 900 High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) valves for The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The project required a pneumatic quarterturn solution with a fast closing time to be used for transporting gas from Umm Shaif to Habshan through Das Island. 90 additional Algas actuators were also supplied for on/off applications. Giovanni Boiardi, sales engineer, Biffi stated “The customer not only needed a reliable product but an entire service package from design and fabrication to testing. Biffi’s offering represented the best solution for their requirements in terms of reliability and overall performance.” The actuator has an internal cylinder diameter of 1800mm and a spring wire diameter of almost 4". It also benefits from a maximum operating output torque of 750,000Nm. With an exceptional flow rate of ± 200 l/sec which allows an operation time close to 12 seconds for a displacement volume of 2,244l, the certified SIL 3 compliant actuator features a scotch yoke mechanism which enables greater output torque versus angular stroke curve. This allows the actuator displacement to be reduced and a shorter valve stroke time. High operation flexibility and high dynamic response are guaranteed through Biffi’s integral quick exhaust mechanism that permits the use of actuated valves with a very short operating time down to less than one second. The control package is equipped with high quality Westlock Magnum XT-90 proximity switches and Biffi’s proprietary pneumatic booster valve complete with by-pass which is also SIL 3 rated. Both Biffi and Westlock are part of the same actuation and controls division ensuring efficiency in supply, logistics and sourcing for all components. “All components of the actuators are manufactured at Biffi and solutions can be designed specifically for the customer’s individual requirements, thereby improving performance” explains Paolo Baroni, marketing manager, Biffi. “This also means that we can take responsibility for the actuator as a whole, ensuring high quality and peace of mind.” 26

PVS Chemicals Relies on Precision from Schubert & Salzer basic medium with absolute accuracy. It is extremely important for us that the control valve can deal with any variations in concentration at the inlet with the minimal delay and the maximum precision for the end product. Process parameters exist such that the control valve must compensate for variations on the intake side between 0 and 100%, followed by 0 to 80%.”

Kristof Spreutels (Plant Manager at PVS) and Tristan Lejeune (International Sales Manager at Schubert & Salzer Control Systems) shaking hands in front of PVS Chemicals’ production plant

Among other things, PVS Chemicals produce extremely pure chemicals which are used in the semiconductor industry, for manufacturing printed circuit boards. One of the company’s outstanding innovations is the production of ultra-pure sulphuric acid. As the only worldwide producer, PVS is able to supply diluted acid at a consistently high level of purity in which any impurities are measured down in the ppt (parts per trillion) range. The purity of acid enables PCBs to be manufactured in a way, so the individual circuit paths can be placed even closer together. This allows electronic devices such as smart phones to be made smaller and lighter. Schubert & Salzer Control Systems’ sliding gate valves have proved to be outstandingly successful in the processing plant producing the diluted Sulphuric Acid. The valves excellent control precision over a very wide control range and their extremely high corrosion resistance are the key to the manufacture of these ultra-pure acids. The demands on highly pure acids increase continually: nowadays, the end product has to be produced consistently for many applications in a precisely defined concentration with a tolerance band of less than ± 0.05%. The dilution presents a special challenge in this process. One of PVS’s activities centres on the production of highly pure diluted sulphuric acid in which the addition of the sulphuric acid in the dilution process can vary between 0 and 100%. “Producing such a high-quality product with minimal deviations in a continuous process presents a special challenge,” comments Kristof Spreutels, Plant Manager at PVS. “Across the world, we are the only ones to have found the solution at such a high quality level. However, it has needed a control valve with exceptional control characteristics to be able to compensate for the variation range of 100% in the 30

SUMMER 2012

Outstanding rangeability and excellent control quality The sliding gate valve handles this challenge with ease. At the heart of this valve are two slotted discs sliding against each other and forming a seal. One of the discs, a seal plate permanently secured in the body at right angles to the direction of flow, has a specific number of transverse slots of the same height. A second nonrotating disc with a similar slotted arrangement is moved vertically against the first, thus changing the flow cross-section. The pressure differential forces the moving disc against the fixed disc. Thus the sliding disc valve seals itself without the need for a separate seat. The sliding gate valves’ very fast response time to signal changes is a key factor in their accurate control quality. Short positioning travel, low moving masses and low actuation forces are the key parameters in enabling very fast reaction times of 100 ms for a full stroke with a resolution of 0.1% of the stroke position. The sliding gate valve offers all of these features in one package. The typical stroke between “open” and “closed” is a mere 6 to 9mm. Positioning of the pneumatically controlled sliding gate valve is provided by the digital Schubert & Salzer 8049 positioner, twin-lead version, with IP65 protection. Since the positioner rests centrally on the valve actuator, it takes up no additional lateral space, as well as saving weight. As a result of this integrated design system, no moving parts can be accessed, thus maximising operational safety and security. Surrounded by gold and PTFE The sliding gate valve’s resistance to corrosion is another aspect in which PVS refuses to compromise. “In our process, we provide resistance to corrosion by making exclusive use of high alloyed or even exotic materials like PTFE, glass, platinum or gold. That is why the control valve has to be made from Hastelloy C. “Valves made from stainless steel or plastic would corrode away or dissolve in less than a week due to the wide variations in concentrations at the inlet in our process. As a result, the combination of control precision and the highest resistance to the media is an absolute must for our process,” according to Spreutels. “Since we’ve already been using Schubert &

pipelines. At the same time, the stress on the pipes is so small that additional valve supports can be dispensed with. “We use sliding gate valves wherever we want to have high availability, good to very good control properties and low maintenance costs. Even in the most challenging acid dilution, the sliding gate valves have required no maintenance or repairs whatsoever up to now. Also, despite the extraordinary stress placed on them by the media, they are showing no signs of degradation. So, thanks to the Schubert & Salzer sliding gate valves, we are the only company in the world able to produce these products to such a high quality and we’ve even been able to reduce the variation range in the concentration of the end product to ± 0.02%.”

Schubert & Salzer Control Systems’ sliding gate valves

Salzers’ valves for over 10 years in steam generation and distribution, for example, it goes without saying that we should also use their expertise for this special application.” Furthermore, sliding gate valves in their twin flange version are very compact and light. Therefore, they present no problems in installation, even in PTFE

Rotork launches IQ3 Rotork launches third generation IQ range of intelligent non-intrusive electric valve actuators

IQ3 actuators are available as three-phase, single-phase and DC variants.

Global flow control engineering group Rotork has announced the introduction of the third generation of its flagship IQ range of intelligent non-intrusive heavy duty electric valve actuators.

setting-up, configuration and commissioning, local position indication, valve and actuator status, asset management and diagnostic operating information.

Benefitting from over fifty years of practical operating experience throughout the world and continuous feedback from all of Rotork’s valve actuation markets, the IQ3 now introduces new levels of functionality and asset management abilities combined with further refinements to a well-proven and rugged mechanical design. The third generation intelligent electric actuator strengthens the pedigree of a product that has led the way in actuation technology since its first appearance in the early 1990s.

An LCD segment display provides positional and warning icon information, whilst actuator setup and operating menus along with detailed diagnostic and operational data screens are clearly displayed in dot matrix format. Four selectable Home-screens provide a quick view of operational status and process information in real-time without having to navigate to the diagnostic screens. The four selectable screens include: Position with text status, Torque (analogue scale) & Position, Torque (numerical scale) & Position and Demand & Position.

The large toughened glass wide angle indication window is the focus of attention for non-intrusive two way wireless communication and multi-functional indication, encompassing user-friendly menus for

Diagnostic graphics present a window into the process, showing the valve torque and usage profiles along with service logs, facilitating real time analysis directly at the actuator.

The new hand-held setting tool uses an infrared signal to check that both items (actuator and setting tool) are Rotork devices before pairing them together using Bluetooth® wireless technology. The security enabled by this technology is further enhanced by the ability to enable or disable the Bluetooth® link as the method of further communication. Advanced IQ data logging and communication capabilities have been increased in response to the end users’ desire to access more data, both in the field and in the control room. Using the setting tool with Bluetooth® wireless technology the data from the actuators can be transferred to a PC for analysis using freely available Rotork Insight2 diagnostic software. Valve maintenance requirements can be identified and anticipated, eliminating unplanned interruptions to the process or over-cautious planned maintenance outages. A patented absolute encoder with built-in redundancy and self checking mechanically tracks valve positions if the actuator is manually operated when the power is off. No power is required for the actuator to reliably and accurately measure position. Using the latest technology and following several years of testing, the IQ absolute encoder has only four moving parts and can measure up to 8,000 output turns. Local LCD and remote contact indication is maintained and full configuration

Wireless two-way communication using the nonintrusive hand held setting tool is a secure way of programming the actuator and accessing asset management data.

of the actuator settings during a power outage is enabled by the standard battery. Mechanical improvements include new handwheel assemblies, new non-intrusive local control switches and optimised corrosion protection by material and coating selection. Thrust bases have been re-engineered as separate components on all models in the IQ range, enabling actuators to be removed from the valve without altering the valve position. The IP68 watertight and temporarily submersible double-sealed enclosure is universal to all actuators, including those with explosionproof certification, ensuring long term reliable performance in the most challenging environments. Rotork third generation IQ3 multi-turn actuators are designed for valves of all types, sizes and description, either by direct attachment or in combination with secondary gearboxes. CPI’s Nil-Cor Advanced Composite Ball Valve Composite ball valve, corrosion–resistant, easy to operate, long lasting and safe

At the Union Camp Corporation’s Dover, Ohio, chemical manufacturing plant, producing organic acids, many of the maintenance and operating problems revolved around the valves in the pipelines carry-

ing sulphuric acid. These valves required constant attention, and frequent replacement due to corrosion and “freezing” in position, which made them inoperable. High maintenance costs coupled with Safety issues and excessive production downtime, much of it unscheduled, resulted in a compelling need to find valves that were more suitable for the duty, and which would alleviate the situation.

A Nil-Cor advanced composite ball valve was installed in a pipeline handling 79% sulphuric acid at ambient temperature to evaluate its performance. The valve selected for the tests was a 1" Nil-Cor series 310, made of pressure moulded vinyl ester resin and glass fibres – a composite materials system that is inert to most acids, caustics and solvents at temperatures from sub-zero to 99°C. The valve has class 150 flanges and is rated for 275 psi, (19 bar). Other design features include an integrally moulded, blow-out proof stem and ball;

PTFE seats and PTFE V ring stem packing. Available with flanged connections from DN25 (1") to DN 150 (6"), and wafer pattern DN200 (8"), these valves are CE marked & PED compliant. Light in weight, a DN50 (2") valve weighs less than 4Kg, these valves can easily installed by one man, because of these benefits, Union Camp installed more of these valves. The maintenance department at Union Camp Corporation is very pleased with the performance of the Nil-Cor ball valves in the 79% sulphuric acid service. Other valves used for this operation were often inoperable after a few weeks of being exposed to the acid. The Nil-Cor valves, in comparison have required no maintenance, and continue to perform well after several years in service. In addition, the use of composite valves has put an end to the unsafe practice of using pipe extensions over valve handles in order to give extra leverage to turn “frozen” valves.

Nil-Cor advanced composite valves have been manufactured for 35 years, and are produced in a number of different resin systems to suit different chemicals and operating conditions. Nil-Cor valves of vinyl ester resin construction, with either glass fibre or graphite fibre reinforcement, 310 and 300 materials respectively, have earned for themselves an enviable record for long and reliable service under arduous conditions. They have now been joined by Nil-Cor valves of novolac epoxy resin construction, reinforced with glass fibres, 500XP; and reinforced with graphite fibres, 610XP. 500XP valves are suitable for 98% sulphuric acid, and perform well in aggressive solvents, such as methylene chloride, acetone & MIBK. 610XP valves are particularly cost effective in HCL applications with organic solvent contamination. Nil-Cor ball valves are available with characterised seats for control applications, and a zirconia lined version is also available for use with abrasive, acidic slurries. Nil-Cor Advanced Composite valves, light in weight, but long lasting and reliable, are distributed exclusively in the UK and Ireland by CPI Group, Sutton in Ashfield, Notts, England.

Adanac hots up... Adanac is predominantly known for its close connection to low temperature applications. Whilst this is still a major part of the business, Adanac are pleased to announce that they are now able to offer elevated temperature testing for a variety of valves such as gate, globe, ball, butterfly and check valves, in a large size range. The test capabilities now range from temperatures as low as -196ºC, up to +400ºC, for cryogenic testing, type approval testing and fugitive emissions prototype/ production testing, covering test specifications such as BS EN 15848 Shell SPE 77/312, BS EN 1626, BS 6364, Shell SPE 77/306, 77/200 and others. These tests may allow manufacturers of process equipment to qualify a new or existing range of products for additional or more severe service conditions, increasing their potential customer base dramatically.

1.5 inch class 1500 Bonney forge gate valve

In additional, such tests may give an end user confidence in a particular product to perform in more extreme applications, or enable them to select a product which discharges fewer emissions. With the ever increasing demand on production sites to reduce fugitive emissions, this is an important factor to consider. The nature of our business means that we are regularly required to interpret complex test specifications. Coupled with Adanac’s impartiality, this ensures that manufacturers, stockists and end users alike can be confident in our ability to perform such tests to the highest degree of integrity. In addition to the range of valves that we are able to test, we can also test other pressure / process equipment including strainers/filters, safety relief valves, pressure regulators and solenoid valves.

SIPOS’ hot topic SIPOS Aktorik has secured a contract to supply valve control technology to an innovative district heating network in Finland. Via the local partner, the manufacturer and global supplier of electric actuation technology has been selected to supply the City of Seinäjoki with actuators equipped with Modbus RTU. Drawing on its track record supplying actuators for district heating in Europe and district cooling (DC) applications in the Middle East, SIPOS demonstrated expertise in the supply of field devices to secure the community heating project order. The company also illustrated capability in providing the fieldbus communication technology required to support modernisation of the 250km district heating system. The pioneering project has replaced an existing district heating system that used hand controlled valves with a radio controlled solution. As part of the tender process, site visits were made by SIPOS’ local partner, Aumator who undertook a

comprehensive assessment including measurement of wells, valve shafts and flanges. SIPOS’ actuators were commissioned in the summer of 2011: the devices are successfully fulfilling their function and have assisted in heating the City during its extreme winter weather. District cooling and heating applications benefit from SIPOS’ specialism in variable speed actuation technology which prevents water hammer. As a result of this expertise, SIPOS reports continued significant orders to support collective environmental projects.

A quality philosophy at Kent Introl

Quality, Health & Safety and Environment (QHSE) are fundamental considerations at control and choke valve manufacturers Koso Kent Introl. Indeed, the company has a board director for QHSE, Brian Richmond, who leads a dedicated team concerned with these matters. The manager of this team is recently-promoted Angela Bailey, whose expertise and passion for maintaining the highest possible standards, is evident. “We’re here to make sure that customers’ orders are completed as efficiently as possible – and to the correct specification and standard, of course,” she explains. This in itself is a considerable challenge, since the company is required to adhere to a myriad of different standards, either internationally-recognised accreditation programmes, or those set by individual customers.

than capable of meeting this challenge. “We get involved in a project right from the start,” she explains, “Even before the order is placed, ideally.” She describes the importance of understanding the customer’s specification, and the sheer volume of information that the team will need to process in order to gain the required knowledge. This is fed into the sales team to help them to arrive at an accurate quote. Once an order is placed, Angela’s team will create a Quality Plan (otherwise known as an Inspection and Test Plan) to map out the standards that must be achieved to ensure the order is produced correctly. To begin with, the Quality team will carry out materials inspection, using positive materials inspection (PMI) techniques. A Quality Officer will then inspect and certify progress against the Quality Plan as work is carried out. The Quality function acts independently to the manufacturing team, which means that, unless they are satisfied that all standards are being met, a job will not be allowed to progress to the next stage of the plan. That said, the team will always do whatever they can to keep the project on track. Final testing, which might need to be customer-witnessed, will take place under the scrutiny of the Quality team, before valves can finally be certified.

In fact, KKI has held ISO/TS 29001 since 2010; ISO 9001 since 1996; ISO 14001 since 1999; is SIL-3 Capable (certified by ABS Consulting); and has API Q1 accreditation pending.

Alongside ensuring compliance within the manufacturing environment, Angela’s team is also responsible for supplier monitoring, internal audits, customer audits and the company’s Quality Management System (QMS). Since KKI adheres to Lean manufacturing principles, and operates a philosophy of continuous improvement, this means that the QMS is a dynamic and regularly-updated tool. The team is also responsible for Health & Safety across the workforce and the company’s three sites. They are currently working towards OHSAS 18001.

Additionally, in accordance with Module H of the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC, KKI can supply up to and including Category III products operating on Group I Gas (certified by Lloyds Register) and, in accordance with the ATEX Directive 94/4/ EC can supply products up to and including Group II Category II, identified as suitable for use in Zone 1 (also certified by Lloyds Register).

“It’s a busy and constantlychanging environment,” Angela concedes, “But there’s nothing more satisfying than certifying a completed project that can be despatched to the customer on time.”

Furthermore, as the company manufactures bespoke products tailored to customers’ exact needs, KKI operates within customer, national and international standards including: BE EN 10204, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B16.34, NACE MR0175/ ISO 15156, NACE MR103, API 6A, API 17D, ASTM material standards; Shell, Statoil and BP specifications and NORSOK piping and materials specifications. Keeping on top of all of these standards is a difficult and complex task, but Angela and her team are more 44

A Call to Arms!

David Millar MD Heap & Partners Ltd

With youth unemployment now sitting at 22%, today’s school children need all the help they can get. Whilst Government has a major role to play, business must also step forward to help, you can’t just expect someone else to sort it out. You need to do your bit.

The school’s need to prepare their students for the jobs market. It’s up to business to step up to this challenge and help out. In turn you and your company will benefit

from doing your bit to help out. Let’s face it, if we leave this problem to the politicians we’re doomed! There are a number of areas that you can help out:Career days If you attend a careers day you will note the presence of the armed services, universities and some quangos but precious few private companies. Heap & Partners attend careers days to answer questions about manufacturing. The students in many cases don’t know what career path to take. In these instances, they are keen to gather as much information on as many and varied careers as possible. This is where private companies need to talk about their particular industries. In terms of time it’ll take a few hours, but it will act to promote your business in the community and if you are looking to recruit then it may even be an opportunity to identify the best students. Be prepared for some very odd questions, they will keep you on your toes! Work experience To help students get a better CV, work experience can be invaluable. It gives them something to talk about in an interview and will help their CV stand out from the crowd. There are a number of different formats for work experience from one day a week for eight weeks, to a solid block of five or ten working days. Apart from supervision time, a work experience scheme costs the company nothing. The employer should not expect to get anything from a work experience student other than goodwill, but the student should expect to at least get a flavour for each department in the company and the functions they undertake. At Heap and Partners the students typically enjoy the assembly work far more than the office work but to ensure we provide a well rounded placement we plan for them to spend time in every department. Often we will also give the students a marketing project to undertake during the week so that they can drop onto the project if they have any quiet periods. Training - interview techniques Your local School will have a list of training requirements that they would like help with. For instance we have given a talk on interview techniques to a group of sixth formers facing their first

46

SUMMER 2012

interviews. Typical training session will only last an hour but can be invaluable from the students point of view. Whilst you may well have sat through countless interviews (on both sides of the table) they have yet to undergo one. A daunting task, but one that you can help with. We have produced a crib sheet that we give out to the students, if you want to see the sort of basic points we cover then you can download a copy from our web site. See www.heaps.co.uk/our-world. php and look for the section on schools. It’s royalty free, the only thing we ask is if you can improve it please send us a copy so we can use the new version. It’s pretty basic stuff, obvious even, but basic help is better than no help at all! Factory tours Some schools want to take their students on factory tours to give them ideas about different industries and career paths. It’s well worth opening your factory up as you never know the potential benefits to yourselves. We used to take groups of girls from a local school (from memory they were aged around 14 - not a natural group for engineering). However some years later we got a letter from Cambridge University, it was from a girl who had been on our tour and wanted a summer job. We provided that and she ended up spending some time working for us developing new products. Being the high flyer she was, she ended up at MIT in the States, but not before she’d done invaluable work for us. It’s not all one way!

Promotion of manufacturing One of our underlying aims is to promote manufacturing, it’s vital we attract the brightest and the best into the only sector that can truly turnaround this countries fortunes. It may only account for 12% of GDP but it makes up 55% of our exports and how else will you pull money into our economy, through borrowing? Great Britain in still the 6th biggest manufacturing nation in the world - that puts something like 188 countries behind our tiny little island. We’re proud of the new products we’re launching that are “Made in Great Britain” you should be too. Conclusion This country can’t afford to wait for the politicians to sort out the mess we’re in. After all, they helped make it! Business has to do all it can, your business has to do all it can, and you have to do all that you can.

CVS Appointed as First ASCO Offshore Distributor CVS first to be appointed as an ASCO Numatics Offshore Specialist Distributor CVS has invested heavily in state of the art repair and service equipment as well as very efficient procedures so it makes sense that as long as the team meet ASCO Numatics’ stringent requirements, CVS can respond much faster to customers’ needs at a local level.

Last month, Ian Parkinson, Distributor Manager UK & Ireland and Steve Barford, (Senior Process Specialist of ASCO Numatics, part of Emerson Industrial Automation) visited Control Valve Solutions’ (CVS) main Workshop facilities in Aberdeen to formally announce that CVS had been officially appointed as the first ASCO Numatics Offshore Specialist Distributor. CVS will now provide support for ASCO Numatics customers’ who can be serviced from its Aberdeen workshop where repairs will be carried out. This collaborative agreement will see ASCO Numatics providing valve sizing, selection and engineering support in the specialist field of valve piloting. This in turn will ensure users of CVS services will benefit from the installation of the latest solenoid valve technologies on repaired and new valves. The plan is to incorporate ASCO Numatics valve piloting solutions when CVS’ engineers are repairing valves that already have solenoid valves fitted, and when working with users to engineer valve automation projects. Part of the process in appointing CVS was to assess the standard of work and pictured is an example of a Temperature Recycle Valve that was fully upgraded and overhauled using a range of ACSO Numatics products.

At CVS’ Aberdeen Workshop a fully upgraded and overhauled Temperature Recycle Valve using ASCO Numatics range of products

One of ASCO Numatics’ solenoid valves that has stood out for CVS’ engineering team is the low power version of its Series 327 Ex d (pictured above and left). This solenoid valve not only reduces running costs but the operational life is enhanced as power losses are minimised and the heat generated is reduced. With a commitment to full valve life management this is just one ASCO product that fits well with CVS.

Steve Barford of ASCO Numatics said “This is our first collaboration with a specialist offshore provider and demonstrates our utmost confidence in the CVS team to provide our customers at a local level with fast turnaround support that is so critical in an environment where shutdowns need to be minimal.” 48

SUMMER 2012

ASCO Numatics Series 327 Ex d solenoid valves

Mick Beavers, Managing Director of Control Valve Solutions is a great advocate of these collaborations. He said “We already have agreements with Emerson as an approved repairer for Fisher control valves and an ADC for TopWorx. Having agreements in place with three complementary Emerson brands will help us to continue to deliver the high standards of quality and service that our customers have come to expect of us. By replacing existing solenoid valves with the ASCO Numatics range when we repair a valve, and by using ASCO Numatics product when we automate an actuator, we will ensure users are guaranteed an industry proven and highly reliable solution that takes advantage of the latest technologies in design and manufacture.” In the same month of being appointed as the first ASCO Numatics’ Offshore Specialist Distributor, CVS also achieved FPAL Verify status as the company enters its fourth year of trading. Mick Beavers commented “This is another accolade in itself. You can imagine how proud the whole team is about our growing success and why we stand out.” As part of CVS’ absolute resolve to continue to make service improvements; a new company mantra has been initiated. The mantra “HITS” represents Honesty, Integrity, Transparency and Safety and it has been adopted by the whole team.

RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU The ‘Department for Business Innovation and Skills’ (BIS) has issued a consultation document on:

distributors of these products, and trade associations in the electronics and ICT sector.

Implementation of the restrictions of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) Directive 2011/65/EU.

The RoHS Directive primarily aims to ensure that EU Member States apply common restrictions on the levels of six hazardous substances that may be present in a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as minimising the end of life environmental impact of that equipment. It is a single European market measure and implementation is made by one law covering the whole of the UK.

The original RoHS Directive was published in 2002 and came into force on 1 July 2006. The new RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU was published on 1 July 2011. It has a different scope and obligations on those placing products on the market. This consultation is relevant to all businesses making and/or placing products with any electrical and electronic function on the market, wholesalers and

Rotork provides electric solutions for automated flow control at the Botlek Tank Terminal

Aerial view of the Botlek Tank Terminal

Rotork Skilmatic SI electro-hydraulic failsafe valve actuators on the loading jetty

The recently opened Botlek Tank Terminal (BTT) at Rotterdam relies on Rotork’s latest electric valve actuation technologies for automated flow control and vital safety related duties associated with the import, export and storage of a varied range of liquid bulk products. Construction of the €70 million first phase of the terminal began in April 2010 and was completed within budget and on time by the Polish company PolimexMostostal S.A. BTT has 34 storage tanks, providing a combined storage capacity of 200,000 cubic metres, of which 130,000 cubic metres is earmarked for clean fuels and the rest is for edible oils and biodiesel. The state-of-the-art terminal has deepwater berths including a 420 metre jetty that can simultaneously accommodate two seagoing vessels and two barges, operating 24 hours-a-day. Over 250 Rotork IQPro multi-turn and quarter-turn intelligent electric actuators have been installed to operate the valves that control the routine movement of liquids throughout the site. A further 55 Rotork Skilmatic SI self-contained electro-hydraulic actuators have been installed in strategic areas on valves that provide failsafe Emergency Shutdown (ESD) protection from potential accidents and spillages. All the Rotork actuators are monitored and controlled on fully redundant Rotork Pakscan digital bus loops, linked by three Pakscan P3 master stations to the site’s central SCADA system. The Skilmatic SI actuators are equipped with integral circuitry designed to receive a separately hardwired discrete ESD alarm signal that will override any other input and move the actuator to the pre-determined safe position, even in the event of electrical power failure. These actuators are situated on the inlet and outlet ports of the storage tanks and on the marine and truck loading bays. They are key components in the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that operates with dedicated level and flow sensors and ESD logic

solvers to provide the site’s Safety Instrumented Function (SIF). BTT General Manager Charles Smissaert pointed out that the Rotork Skilmatic electro-hydraulic solution for ESD protection at the site had been selected as a more robust and reliable alternative to air operated actuators, which also require more maintenance. All Rotork actuators at BTT feature ATEX explosionproof certification and IP68 double-sealed watertight enclosures designed for harsh and exposed environments. They also share Rotork’s IQPro non-intrusive setting, commissioning and data communication technologies, enabling actuator configuration and data logger files to be transferred from the field to the office for diagnostics, analysis and storage. In combination with Rotork IQ-Insight software, this data can help to maximise plant utilisation by identifying potential valve wear problems and facilitating predictive maintenance. The punctual completion of the tank farm was assisted by the nearby presence of Rotork BV’s fully equipped workshop, which provided the facilities to motorise all the valves, encompassing gate and butterfly designs in sizes up to 16 inches, before shipping them to site as complete, factory tested packages. Rotork also assisted with installation and commissioning and will continue to provide local support for all the installed actuators.

CVS Values & Beliefs HITS home To mark the success of the end of another remarkable year for CVS the management team has launched its “HITS” campaign to underpin the founder’s values and beliefs in what has made CVS successful. The HITS campaign is all part of CVS’ resolve to continue to make service improvements and represents Honesty, Integrity, Transparency and Safety. The whole team has adopted the new company mantra with a passion and whilst the document is more detailed put simply the words mean: Honesty – to be completely upfront with both suppliers and clients to meet expectations at all times; Integrity – to honour all commitments made to ensure complete reliability with service and deliveries; Transparency – to give factual information at all times and make the client fully aware of any changes at the earliest opportunity; Safety – to operate

Heap & Partners “Doing Well By Doing Good” Heap & Partners sets sights on the 3P’s Heap & Partners have announced a major overhaul of their corporate responsibility with their 3P program. The 3Ps are People, Planet and Profit. This three pronged initiative covers the company’s Profitable growth, minimising its impact Heap & Partners first lot of 45 solar on the Planet and panels installed at their factory in helping local and Birkenhead overseas People with its radical volunteering program. As Managing Director David Millar puts it “Many of the World’s problems have either been caused by or at least facilitated by capitalism, but ironically it’s only business that has the capital, knowledge and drive to solve those same problems. We can’t wait for politicians to sort it out as they can’t see past the next election!” Profit Heap & Partners have just set their budgets for the coming year and are again targeting double digit growth. It believes that profitable growth is vital not to fund business as usual but to enable it to do its part in solving some of the problems the world faces. Now in its 146th year in business it has always prided itself on taking its responsibilities seriously but today it’s looking to set itself some serious stretch goals in terms of the other two Ps! Planet Already a Green Apple award winning company for its environmental work, the company has now decided to raise the bar! Heap & Partners would like to become the first company in its industry to be carbon neutral. Obviously this is a major stretch goal and one that the company doesn’t yet know if it can achieve but with a determined and concerted effort from all its employees it aims to reduce waste to minimal levels and implement policies to increase its energy efficiencies, so whether its installing solar panels or simply not printing out an e-mail, it’s focus will be consistent with achieving carbon reduction. David Millar elaborated “We’re not interested in the global warming debate, but we must be concerned 54

SUMMER 2012

about waste. We hope that in trying to achieve carbon neutrality the company will deliver serious cost savings to the bottom line. In an industry that has to operate on slim margins, that should be of interest to every company.” People Perhaps the most radical measure the company is implementing is its volunteering programme. Heap & Partners has always helped local charities, provided support to children’s football teams sponsoring kit and last year it formally pledged to match all money raised by its staff for good causes. Now however it has gone further and is setting up a formal volunteering programme. The staff are currently being asked which good causes they wish to support. They are then given 6 days paid volunteering time per person per year. For Heaps this equates to the company donating one person full time for a year to a charity, a major investment for any company! Heap’s pink day for charity Heap & Partners believes engineering companies have a vast range of skills that can make a massive difference to all sorts of charities. It intends to put its skill to good use by letting its staff have time off from their normal duties to provide hands on support where it’s needed. In return the company hopes to see staff morale boosted and perhaps some nice local PR. “Heap & Partners - Doing Well By Doing Good” This is the strap line adopted by the company for its 3Ps program. It believes that by widening its focus from a single P (Profit) to the 3Ps the whole company will benefit, including the bottom line. So how does David Millar sum it all up? “We hope that our 3Ps programme will do some good and enable us to have some fun on the way!”

EnerMech’s $65 Million Growth and Acquisition Plan Mechanical engineering group, EnerMech, has ring fenced more than $65 million (£40 million) to launch a major expansion in to the USA, as it seeks to replicate massive growth in Europe and the eastern hemisphere. Up to $15 million (£9.5 million) will be invested in new Process, Pipeline and Umbilical (PPU) equipment with another $50 million (£31.5 million) set aside for strategic acquisitions allied to its other service lines and to build upon the existing USA business, EnerMech announced at OTC in Houston this week. The ambitious UK company has also headhunted two senior US Oil & Gas figures who will lead the Stateside expansion. Vince Kouns and Alan Sweeney, who were respectively founder/President and Vice President of Valkyrie Commissioning Services until it was acquired by Weatherford in 2005, will be responsible for establishing the overall EnerMech brand and service lines in the

Americas region, reporting directly to EnerMech main board director Les Graves. EnerMech managing director, Doug Duguid, forecast a two pronged strategy of organic growth of the existing PPU business plus acquisition led growth in cranes, equipment rental, hydraulics and valves, which will generate profitable revenues in excess of $50 million (£30 million) within three years. Mr Duguid said: “Post Macondo we see a strengthening market with clients who want a reliable costeffective service and this offers us huge opportunities. Starting this growth in Houston will also access West African opportunities, and subsequently Mexico, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil.” The company is on a major recruitment drive and will add to its existing Houston premises and plan to open a Gulf Coast operating base. Mr Duguid said: “After our expansion into the Middle East, Far East and Australia, our attention has turned to the USA and we believe we can replicate our international success in the Americas by backing strong, local management. “We have waited until we could secure the best possible management team and we have found that in Vince and Alan, who both have regional and international experience in growing service organisations. Their track record of growth at Valkyrie, as well as extensive experience in the Americas, will be

K Controls ATEX & IECEx Dual Certified Exi Switchbox Is specifying “simple apparatus” as simple as it seems? Using micro switches in intrinsically safe circuits to monitor valve position is common practice. A micro switch is defined as “simple apparatus” so it does not generate or store energy above defined limits. Therefore, if it is incorporated into an intrinsically safe circuit, there will be no unexpected sparking that could cause ignition of a hazardous gas or dust cloud. So far so good, but the switches are of no use on their own. They have to be operated, adjusted, terminated and environmentally protected. In order for this to happen they usually need to be fitted in a “switch box”. For intrinsically safe applications some switch box suppliers offer their standard noncertified product, complete with “simple apparatus” micro switches. In such cases the safety focus is on the switches and not on the switch box. Closer examination of the switch box prompts one or more of the following questions to be asked: t How can the build-up of electro-static charge be avoided on plastic parts that are likely to rubbed or cleaned in service? Is it enough to simply add a label stating “Do not wipe with a dry cloth”? Enclosures are sometimes made of plastic and a clear plastic is often used in the construction of the visual position indicator. t How can one be sure that the magnesium content of a light alloy enclosure, in which the switches are fitted, does not result in sparking on impact? t Is the distance between each circuit in the enclosure sufficient to avoid arcing between them? t Is the distance between the terminals and the inside of the enclosure sufficient to avoid arcing across the gap? t Has the continuity to earth of each circuit been tested? t Is the product cleared marked with the intrinsically safe safety parameters and a traceable label? t Is documentation readily available to the user that will assist with the risk assessment required by the ATEX Directive? If your switch box manufacturer or supplier cannot answer these questions to your satisfaction then perhaps specifying “simple apparatus” is not as simple as it seems. An alternative would be to specify a switch box that has overall Exi certification to ATEX and or IECEx.

ATEX is accepted outside Europe to some degree but its prime objective is free trade within the EU. This is achieved by establishing a level of safety acceptable to all the European national authorities. IECEx on the other hand was designed as an ISO/IEC Type 5 Certification Scheme administered by a single third party. It uses recognised practice to achieve a common acceptable level of safety. The scope of the Scheme is defined by the standards issued by IEC Standards Committee TC 31. There are currently 34 participating countries with a further 12 countries observing. The only ATEX document in the public domain is the manufacturer’s “Declaration of Conformity”. This is not the case with the IECEX scheme. Assessment and Test reports are available online and in real time, giving users access to much more detailed information. This transparency together with compliance to clearly defined standards that are based on recognised practice are leading to the adoption of the IECEx scheme in an increasing number of countries outside Europe. Safety may be the prime objective of IECEx certification but as a single global standard moves closer to becoming a reality, free trade will be one its welcome consequences. For a more detailed comparison of the ATEX and IECEx schemes please visit www.iecex.com/paris/ docs/Guide_IECEx_ATEX_Comparison.pdf For further information on the IECEx scheme please visit http://www.iecex.com

Midland-ACS Certified to Support SIL3 SIL3 Actuator Control Valves Provide Solutions for Safety Instrumented Systems Builders

Many of Midland-ACS’ actuator control valves, including several 1750 Series body ported poppet valves, have undergone third-party assessment to IEC 61508 and are now certified to support SIL3 capability

Midland-ACS announces that a wide range of its actuator control valve products have undergone thirdparty assessment to the IEC 61508 functional safety standard, and are now certified to support SIL (safety integrity level) 3 capability. Control valves with this high level of safety integrity are increasingly being specified by process industries to protect personnel and plant, by ensuring fail-safe operation of critical functions such as emergency shutdown. By using SIL3 capable stainless steel valves and actuation controls, designers of safety instrumented systems are able to more easily comply with the risk reduction requirements of the IEC 61508 and 61511 technical safety standards.

All versions of Midland-ACS’ 70 Series directacting solenoid 3/2 poppet valves are now certified in accordance with the IEC 61508 functional safety standard to have SIL3 support capability

As part of the process of attaining IEC 61508 certification, Midland-ACS worked closely with the conformity assessment solutions specialist SIRA. “The certification process is all-embracing,” says James Kingham of Midland-ACS. “The first part involved analysing each valve to component level, evaluating the risk, mode and consequences of failure. The second part comprised a comprehensive audit of company processes, including our engineering, production, quality assurance and sales operations. Obtaining SIL3 capability certification for such a broad range of products is a considerable accolade for Midland-ACS, and we are already submitting low service temperature poppet and spool valves, along with further hydraulic products, for assessment.”

The ďŹ rst tranche of products to receive SIL3 capability status include direct-acting solenoid and pilot operated poppet valves, pilot operated spool valves, and a number of pilot operated and directacting solenoid hydraulic valves for use in ballast control systems. The introduction of such a diverse range of SIL3 capable products provides designers of pneumatic and hydraulic actuation systems with signiďŹ cant conďŹ guration exibility. All variants of Midland-ACS’ 70 Series direct-acting solenoid 3/2 poppet valves are now certiďŹ ed in accordance with IEC 61508 to have SIL3 support capability. Offering a choice of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch ports, these valves are designed primarily for actuator control using pneumatic or low-pressure hydraulic media. Two types of solenoid are available, certiďŹ ed to protection classes EExd IIC T6 and T4. A number of 3/2 body ported poppet valves from Midland-ACS’ 1750 Series now support SIL3 capability. These compact pilot air operated valves feature large ow paths to minimise pressure drop. CertiďŹ ed models include standard temperature service (-20 to 180 degrees Celsius) valves with Viton seals, spanning port sizes from 1/4 to 1-1/2 inches, as well as 2- and 3-inch port size valves with Nitrile seals. The standard temperature service versions of pilot operated 3/2 spool valves from Midland-ACS’ 1500 and 1600 Series also now support SIL3 capability.

These Viton-sealed valves offer a choice of 1/4 and 1/2 inch port sizes. Many Midland-ACS hydraulic valve products for ballast control systems are also now certiďŹ ed for SIL3 capability. These include the DN5, DN10 and DN15 Series pilot-operated valves, as well as the DN3 Series direct-acting solenoid valves. All these designs feature an integral balanced piloting system that enables the low-powered solenoid to switch the valve at high pressures. The DN5, 10 and 15 Series products have metal-to-metal seats, while the DN3 Series employs a ceramic ball and a stainless steel seat. The SIL3 capable version of the DN3 offers a stay-put manual override facility, and is available certiďŹ ed for protection classes ExD IIC T6 and T5. All Midland-ACS products certiďŹ ed to SIL3 capability are supplied complete with copies of the Sira certiďŹ cation, which contains all the information that engineers and designers need to calculate the safety integrity level of the complete system, based on its component parts.

Plastic Valves Come of Age Plastic dual containment valves are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal valves. Lee Bellamy, national sales manager at Pegler & Louden, part of BSS Industrial, looks at the benefits of using plastic. Metal has traditionally been the material of choice for valve users. However, plastic dual containment valves are becoming an increasingly popular choice, particularly in applications where hazardous substances are used, such as the water treatment sector where chemical dosing is required and cross contamination is unacceptable. New regulations and legislation, in areas like health and safety, plus other environmental factors are increasingly forcing companies to enact pre-emptive solutions into areas which have previously been overlooked. For example, bunded storage tanks are standard practice, the use of dual containment pipe work, extends the system security and integrity to the whole pipe system. A second reason for the growth of dual containment valves is cost. Dual containment pipework is an extremely cost effective solution, when compared to traditional expensive bespoke produced solutions, which use price volatile metallic components and pipe. What’s more, dual containment pipe work is a continuous single installation, whereas traditional methods involve the fitting of two systems one after each other, which takes twice the time with a more expensive labour cost base. A further issue is the lightweight and hygienic properties of plastic, which

make it much easier to use, with no potential for costly corrosion, or limescale build up. Plastics systems also offer benefits over metallic systems in terms of lower friction losses, allowing either smaller bore pipe to be used or reduced pump running costs. Improvements in reduced friction loss; which can equate up to 25 per cent over the life of a system. Finally, the current trend toward dual contained flexible hose can also be serviced by BSS Industrial giving a fully dual contained system solution.

third of all M&S hosiery. It is chiefly used in dyeing (where the yarn is coloured) and boarding (where the hosiery is shaped and pressed) applications that can often utilise up to 7 tonnes of steam per hour. Most of the existing steam system equipment around the site has been supplied by Spirax Sarco. The latest steam system improvements are due to take place shortly and will significantly increase steam usage due to production expansion. Courtaulds and Spirax Sarco are continually working together to improve the overall efficiency of the steam and condensate system. The steam system upgrades are intended to improve efficiency by 20%, according to Mr Large. Courtaulds has worked hard for the last five years to improve its sustainability credentials and has already reduced its energy consumption by 50%, cut water consumption by 20% and eliminated waste to landfill. The process undertaken to win the coveted M&S eco-factory status has involved a whole range of initiatives, including an integrated building management system, policies around turning off lights, preventing air leakages, voltage optimisation and lower energy lighting. Courtaulds is also recovering heat from the hot effluent from dyeing to heat fresh water for the next batch.

Manually energised solution for failsafe valve actuators

The photographs show ManPower modules designed for two versions of Rotork scotch-yoke actuators

Flow control engineering group Rotork has introduced an innovative range of manually energised spring-return actuators to provide an economical solution for failsafe valves that are infrequently operated. The Rotork ManPower range greatly reduces installation time and expense since no external electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic power supply is required. Suitable for a wide range of ball, butterfly and plug valves, the scotch-yoke actuators are equipped with a compact, self-contained manually operated hydraulic power pack. A hydraulic hand pump on the power pack is used to operate the actuator and compress the failsafe spring, holding the valve in the desired open or closed position until a failsafe signal is received, at which point the spring will immediately drive the valve to the safe position. Failsafe operation of ManPower units can be triggered by electrical signals, high or low pressure pilots or fire sensors, enabling the successful fulfilment of many ESD (Emergency Shutdown) and pressure related protection duties in the oil, gas, petrochemical and pipeline industries. 66

SUMMER 2012

Rotork ManPower actuators are available with output torques up to 45,000 Nm, with explosionproof and watertight certification to international standards. A wide range of options includes local position indication, integral limit switches, speed control, high speed operation, local electrical controls, manual reset and corrosion resistant trims. Where space is restricted the ManPower hydraulic module can be located separately from the valve. Standard units are suitable for a temperature range from -23ºC to +60ºC and equipped with built-in temperature compensation.

ARC Energy Helps Severn Glocon Win Development Order Weld overlay cladding and fabrication specialist ARC Energy Resources has completed a major contract to clad twenty-four highly specialised globe valves for Severn Glocon, a world leader in the manufacture of control and choke valves for specialist markets such as Oil & Gas, LNG/NGL and power. The control valves are destined for the Manifa field development in Saudi

protective coating in areas that would usually be considered difficult to clad.

For Arc Energy, the contract involved cladding the inside wetted areas of twenty four globe valves ranging from 6" to 24" diameters with a 4mm thick coating of a corrosion resistant nickel based alloy. The largest of the valves, four 24" units weighing 12 tonnes each, were among the first to be clad on two new Rotating Head welding machines, which Arc Energy installed late last year at a cost of £500,000 in order to extend the size and scope of the equipment the company can handle.

He adds that Arc Energy worked with Severn Glocon engineers to develop a geometry that was suitable for cladding, and the new machines certainly justified their investment by effectively applying the essential

Arc Energy’s project management of the cladding contract also involved the production of bespoke tooling to handle the different sizes of the valves and meet the special access requirements. All twenty-four valves were produced to a strict delivery schedule, with Arc Energy effectively utilizing their resources to meet cladding deadlines. Arc Energy also undertook heat treatment after the cladding process, as well as pre- and post-NDT testing. Summing up, Severn Glocon sales director Ron Baker comments: “The close working relationship with Arc Energy helps to ensure that our high-integrity valves meet even the most demanding needs of our customers, whilst still being cost-effective.”

Commenting for Arc Energy, managing director Alan Robinson says the vast weight and size of the 24" valves would have presented a serious handling challenge for conventional welding workstations, which apply overlay cladding by moving components around a fixed welding torch. Explaining the significance of the automated Rotating Head machines, he says they are designed to manipulate the welding head around the fixed

How the latest fieldbus-enabled valve islands speed installation and minimise costs When compared with traditional hardwired solutions and conventional, stand-alone solenoid valves, the latest fieldbus enabled valve islands offer substantial improvements in the areas of application, performance, and maintenance – Dave Minors, ASCO Numatics explains. Fieldbus-enabled valve islands offer a number of advantages over conventional valve islands, including reduced wiring costs and faster and easier commissioning and start-up. Built-in diagnostics make it easy to trouble shoot problems - reducing maintenance costs and minimising downtime. However, to realise the full benefits from this technology, there are a number of considerations when applying these devices - particularly in the areas of commissioning, distribution, modularity, diagnostics, and recovery. For example, following installation, fieldbus valve manifolds must be tested and commissioned. When many connections are involved, time and costs quickly add up. The latest generation of valve manifolds now offer SPEEDCON M12 connectors that only need a half-turn to gain a secure connection, so reducing commissioning time and costs.

Connection

Graphic display

With conventional valve manifolds, DIP switches are often used for configuration and these can be an exercise in frustration. A recent innovation is an embedded small graphic display on each module. This offers plain-language messaging that clearly identifies network addresses, baud rates, and other parametric data. Pushbuttons enable navigation through intuitive menus and this simple system represents a revolution in pneumatic fieldbus manifold interfaces. Flexibility and modularity are also important. For example, if a particular I/O module is malfunctioning or a late change order during assembly requires an alteration, conventional non-modular designs force the user to dismantle the entire assembly to get access. By contrast, some new fieldbus valve manifold systems offer modular designs that simply connect together via easily removable clips and screws. If a set of I/O cables turn out to be too short to reach their associated manifold, the user was forced to order a whole new assembly. With the new modular designs, the I/O module is simply unclipped from the main pneumatic fieldbus valve manifold and positioned on 68

the machine within reach of the cables, then connected back to the main module via a sub-bus cable. When there is a problem, diagnostic indicators play a key role in identifying its cause to get the machine up and running quickly. Options include sending data to a local or remote HMI, or interpretation of diagnostic LEDs on the manifold system itself. However this can be a time consuming exercise. Fortunately, new designs offer more functional alternatives. Most innovative is the module integrated graphic display with plain-language messaging. This arrangement places visual status and alarm indication away from tangled cables, in a clearly visible display area. It involves no programming or extra cost, and requires no training to use. Error messages are generated and cleared automatically. The display’s associated pushbuttons allow the user to navigate quickly through intuitive menus for easy and effective troubleshooting. By applying proven technology in innovatively simple ways, the latest valve manifolds such as the G3 valve island from ASCO Numatics, are helping end users to deliver greater cost efficiency and wider application opportunities, while considerably improving commissioning, use, and maintenance. Fugitive Emissions Standards Result of the NWIP ballot for the revision of ISO 15848-1 and ISO 15848-2 (2006) Summary:t Approval for the addition of ISO/NP 15848-1 to the ISO/ TC 153/SC 1 programme of work, but… t Disapproval of its submission direct to DIS vote without further comment – more work is required. t Approval for the addition of ISO/NP 15848-2 to the ISO/ TC 153/SC 1 programme of work, and… t Approval for the submission of Part 2 to DIS vote without further comment.

The issues under consideration for revision in ISO 15848-1:2006 “Industrial valves - Measurement, test and qualification procedures for fugitive emissions - Part 1: Classification system and qualification procedures for type testing of valves” are more contentious than those contained in the Part 2 “Production acceptance test of valves.” As such the changes contained in the amendments already proposed have not been accepted for direct submission of Part 1 to DIS vote. The result of voting now requires that ISO/NP 15848-1 be subject to a revision process by ISO/TC153/SC1/WG10 (which may take a maximum duration of 36 months). ISO/NP 15848-2 may be added to WG10 work programme and as already amended may be submitted to DIS vote without further work. Many technical comments have been received on ISO 15848-1 and these will be considered at a meeting of WG10 that has been called for 12/13 September 2012. UK/BVAA delegates will attend this meeting. Lloyd’s Register is an impartial certification service that provides third-party verification of a product’s conformance to specific standards or specifications and to the use of appropriate, quality manufacturing systems. According to Ken Kleemeier, Industry Business Development Manager at Emerson, there is growing international awareness of the importance of third-party certification such as Lloyd’s Register, particularly in the oil and gas industry. “Offshore Oil & Gas operators are very focused on equipment safety and integrity,” Kleemeier stated. “This focus extends to material sourcing, procurement and manufacturing activities,

with the objective being that all equipment utilised in offshore vessels and installations meets rigorous industry operating and safety standards.” Kleemeier went on to say, “Emerson is the first manufacturer to have a complete line of control valves and digital valve controllers Marine Type Approved by Lloyd’s Register.” Control valves and related instruments are typically installed in areas affecting the safe operation of the ship and its topside processing units. These applications are referred to as “classed duties,” and the valves must be Type Approved for this service. Prior to granting certification to the Fisher products, Lloyd’s Register personnel reviewed Fisher product designs to validate compliance with industry codes and standards. They also witnessed and reviewed documented product performance tests that confirmed the integrity and functional performance of the Fisher designs in production. In addition to product Type Approval, multiple Emerson Fisher manufacturing sites met inspection and test requirements for Lloyd’s manufacturing approval.

Adanac to the Rescue At Adanac we pride ourselves on our short lead time deliveries of non standard product. From fabricating and fitting jackets for valves to Cryogenic modifications and testing, our customers always expect the shortest possible delivery time without compromising on quality. This consistent level of service has ensured that a large number of end users and OEM’s receive otherwise unobtainable valves from Adanac in an acceptable timescale. This circumstance was highlighted by a recent requirement for a major global supplier of Industrial Gases when their supplier had gone out of business. This placed them in the unenviable position of being stuck without a supplier of vital valve product, but with customer deliveries to meet! This requirement was a cold box application for fully extractable Gate and Globe valves. Fully extractable valves can be vital components in the manufacture of cold box assemblies, and once the box is installed the cost to access the valves within can be an eye watering figure! Therefore consistent and reliable supply of quality fully extractable valves is paramount to manufacturers of this equipment. Adanac have built an excellent business relationship with this customer over the years and have gained their confidence as a supplier of quality

product on short lead times, therefore following the closure of their previous supplier for fully extractable valves it was the logical step to contact Adanac. Upon receipt of the order, Adanac set to work on the design and manufacture of these valves and the first batch were supplied on a 4 week turnaround. A timescale far beyond the expectations of this customer, and a timescale that enabled them to supply their finished product to their customer without the concern of late delivery charges. Given the urgency of this requirement our customer was expecting to pay a substantial premium for valves to be supplied in their required delivery timescale, but this was not the case. Adanac provided all valves on time and for a comparative price to our customer’s previous supplier! We have since received additional orders for these valves, and we continue to provide the excellent service our customers have become accustomed to when dealing with Adanac.

Steel valve casting NDE acceptance Steel valve pressure containing castings are specified with a range of quality acceptance tests and supporting documentation to ensure the integrity of the intended pressure vessel. As required, attributes such as mechanical strength, toughness, hardness and the identification of material defects may be requested by the purchaser and specified referring to international standards. Meetings of ISO/TC67/SC2/WG2 have been held since April 2011 with the intent of drafting a revision to ISO 14313: 2007 ‘Petroleum and natural gas industries – Pipeline transportation systems - Pipeline valves’ which will address the issues surrounding material quality acceptance when used in pipeline valves. The purpose of the revision process is also to keep both API Spec 6D ‘Specification for Pipeline Valves’ and ISO 14313 aligned. The draft ISO 14313 standard, as modified by this WG, has been submitted to API 6D TG technical experts for consideration and discussions to further the revision process before the document can, following editing, be issued by ISO as a Draft International Standard (DIS) for comment, which is anticipated by the end of 2012. Many sections of ISO 14313 have been reviewed and changes proposed but it is the issues surrounding material non destructive examination (NDE) for pipeline valve castings that are a cause of concern. Material NDE requirements are and have normally been identified by the purchaser’s Technical Specification whilst the design, materials, testing and marking are specified by the standard. The standard states that the manufacturer identifies the material specification for pressure containing and pressure controlling parts showing – chemical analysis – carbon equivalent – heat treatment – mechanical properties – testing and certification. In a normative Annex A the standard “specifies the requirements for non destructive examination (NDE) that shall be performed by the manufacturer if specified by the purchaser”. An Informative ANNEX G Quality Specification Level (QSL) for pipeline valves has now been added to the standard. This annex specifies quality levels QSL1 to QSL4 for pipeline valves and includes specific requirements for non-destructive examination (NDE), pressure testing, and documentation of the manufacturing process. QSL1 is the quality level as specified in the normative text of ISO 14313 only and is generally accepted to be a high quality specification. 74

SUMMER 2012

QSL2 to QSL4 are optional increased quality levels that may be specified by the purchaser. The major change to this NDE specification procedure is that the purchaser’s specification will no longer be separate and additional to the standard but the requirements will be contained within the standard itself. This change is intended to ensure that any additional NDE will be identified and controlled by the requirements of the standard and not be subject to user choice which may be subject to interpretations which could be problematic should there be litigation issues resulting from use in the field. It is evident that changes are being proposed that move ISO 14313 closer to the requirements for valves specified for API 6A “Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment” in material, quality, NDE and testing. However, by referring to valves manufactured and controlled to ISO 14313, QSL2 to QSL4, where QSL1 has previously been acceptable there is a danger of over specifying unnecessarily stringent NDE procedures and acceptance standards which impose increased costs and add time to the manufacturing process whilst adding no value to the product. This is a cause of concern for valve manufacturers in a competitive market where valves complying with ISO 14313 are still subject to competitive purchase price demands. Further to this, normative Annex A (Requirements for NDE) has been changed to introduce penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing of machined sealing surfaces stipulating that there shall be no indications in the seal areas. Additionally the revised draft standard will specify hardness testing of all metallic pressure containing and pressure controlling parts after final heat treatment with the hardness testing consisting of a minimum of one indication at various locations on each part. This NDE issue is a cause of concern for BVAA member companies who have been reliably manufacturing pipeline valves for many years in a competitive market place. UK steel foundries confirm the increased casting costs that will inevitably be associated with these changes and they will reflect in valve selling prices. If you have a view on these proposals, it would be a good idea to get involved and comment via your own National Standards Body.

Innovative Spring To Centre Actuator From Kinetrol Kinetrol’s spring to centre arrangement consists of a 90 degree vane type pneumatic actuator ďŹ tted with two opposing clock type springs and a mid-stop device.

A single, nonbreathing, sealed housing contains two clock springs and the patented mid-stop device’

When controlled with a 5 port, 3 position, dual-coil solenoid valve the unit will, depending on which solenoid coil is powered, turn in one or other direction. When the solenoid valve is totally de-energised the springs drive the actuator towards the middle and hold it against central physical stops. Nominally, the unit travels 45 degrees about the centre of the actuator but this can be simply and precisely adjusted to any mid-position using a vernier scale. The actuator end stops may be used to independently adjust the outer travel limits (up to 100 degrees). Seven models are available with end of spring stroke torques to over 2400 Nm. Angular travel options to 200 degrees are also available.

Kinetrol Limited Applications include the automation of 3-way valves and the control of processes requiring trickle-feed under electrical and or air supply failure conditions.

bespoke protection for all Electric and Pneumatic Actuators, the effects of excessive temperatures on expensive and often delicate internal actuator mechanisms are safe from damage. Recently controlled tests provided certified protection of critical fail safe electric actuation systems for over two hours in temperatures in excess of 400ºC. This potentially lifesaving protection provided by the Thermal Jackets, allowed functionality of key fire safety damper control systems, even after 150 minutes of exposure to enhanced temperatures - ideal for tunnel fire protection systems.

To summarise…….. t All of Zoedale’s thermal jackets are especially manufactured to order so that they suit exact requirements. t Removable thermal covers for even the most unusually shaped products can be bespoke manufactured. t Thermal Jackets are manufactured using cutting edge twine (or stainless steel for higher temperature work). t The fastening systems include Velcro, drawstrings, D-rings, straps or hook and wire and you can again choose which design will suit your needs. t Our thermal jackets are easily removed for maintenance purposes and can be replaced as often as required. Reducing company’s carbon footprint whilst helping the environment is more important than ever and Zoedale’s products are the ideal energy-saving solution. Fulfilling corporate responsibilities when it comes to energy - rely on Zoedale Plc for helpful advice and assistance. Reliable thermal jackets are difficult to find, bespoke tailoring of these jackets, even harder!

SIPOS selected for flood defence solution SIPOS Aktorik’s electric actuators have been included in a dam enhancement scheme designed to protect the township of Captains Flat, 60km South East of Canberra in Australia. The actuators were selected by SIPOS’ Australian partner, Barron GJM who reported to the Council of Palerang. Located on the Molonglo River, 1km upstream of the Captains Flat township, the existing dam was a 17m high concrete gravity structure built in 1939. Originally designed as a water supply dam for mining operations, the storage facility has been retained as a source of water for the populace of the small town. Recent revisions of probable maximum floods indicated a need to increase the protection

Flood defence at Captains Flat Dam, Canberra

SIPOS 5 Flash actuation provides advanced automation at Captains Flat Dam

afforded to the local population. This resulted in an upgraded dam construction incorporating a sluice gate motorised for wet weather flow by Barron using SIPOS Aktorik actuators for valve operation. As part of the actuation commission, a sluice gate valve was automated through re-use of an existing gearbox and installation of a SIPOS 5 Flash actuator. Speed selection capability of the actuator meant it could be set to 80 rpm while simultaneously extending the ramp time to one second: this was a major design benefit as it enabled the actuator to operate the valve without additional gearing or a need to physically change the motor. Footnote: NSW Public Works Department, Wollongong were superintendents for the project and the contractor was Menard Bachy Pty Ltd.

A Proactive and Innovative Approach to Hydrocarbon Release Reduction reveal that 76% of all HCR’s come from inadequate maintenance and management of valves, pipe systems and instrument connections. Our HCMPTM is a Multi faceted and unique blended learning approach to reducing HCR’s through theory and practical training courses which help your teams achieve their leak reduction targets through improved awareness, prevention, identification and response behaviours. Valve Types & The Principles of Selection 23% of all HCR’s are associated with valve leakage and failure. A better understanding of valve types, functions, potential failure modes and their appropriate use will assist you in minimising failures & leaks. Valves, piping systems and instrument connections are the source of 76% of Hydrocarbon Releases (HCR’s). This is a major risk to the health and safety of your personnel, plant, the environment and the wider Oil and Gas industry.

Non-Invasive Maintenance Training Non-Invasive Maintenance illustrates how established routines can help to maintain equipment in good condition. Proactively planning routine maintenance can help prevent critical failures, expensive unplanned shut downs and production losses. Leak Detection Training The MIDAS Meter® is a non-invasive condition monitoring device for detecting and measuring both through valve losses and leakage. Training in the use of this equipment will give you the ability to instantly identify and quantify leak sources in your process plant and pipework allowing you to engage in condition based maintenance and move towards a more predictive maintenance approach.

Rotork DSIR gearbox speeds up manual valve operation for mounting directly to a valve, flexible drive extensions and a padlockable facility. It is also possible to lock the gearbox drive in either of the two gearing ratios.

Rotork Gears has developed the innovative DSIR Dual Speed Input Reducer for speeding up the manual operation of valves and valve gearboxes by reducing the total number of input turns required. To achieve this, the DSIR has two gearing ratios. Switching between the ratios is simply a matter of pushing or pulling on the input shaft. The high 4.25:1 ratio gearing is used for the portion of the valve stroke where the torque requirement is high, which is usually at the beginning and the end of the stroke. In midtravel the valve torque generally drops considerable and therefore the low 1:1 ratio gearing can be used to reduce the number of input turns required. This can provide a 70% reduction in the number of turns required and the operating time. Manufactured from cast iron with carbon and alloy steel shafts and gearing, the rugged DSIR is designed for arduous operation in an ambient temperature range of -40ºC to +120ºC. The standard enclosure specification is watertight to IP67, with IP68 optionally available. Other options include output machining

ARC Energy Weathers Recession Whilst Investing For Future Leading weld overlay cladding and fabrication specialist ARC Energy Resources has recorded the second highest annual turnover in the company’s seventeen-year history, achieving a figure just a few thousand pounds short of £5 million. In addition, the company has achieved an impressive list of industry certifications following a recent successful audit by Lloyds Register for OHSAS 18001:2007 certification of a new occupational health and safety management system developed and implemented by the company. Managing director Alan Robinson says that in a challenging business environment the company has continued to invest in equipment and people, allowing the company to develop.

Alan Robinson

“During the recession we’ve planned for the future” he says: “spending £500,000 on two new Rotating Head welding machines extending the size and scope of corrosion resistant coating contracts we can handle.” The company is able to clad bores up to four metres diameter and areas of restricted access within bores as small as 20mm diameter. Typical weld overlay materials include Inconel 625 & 825, Monel, Hastalloy and stainless steels amongst others. Arc Energy also offers in-house test weld, heat treatment, PMI and NDT facilities. Managing director Alan Robinson says achieving OHSAS 18001 required a cultural change within the business and a significant commitment from all personnel in terms of attitudes and values. In return he believes it will raise working efficiencies, performance and morale by creating a safer environment in which to work, with the added benefit of broadening future business opportunities within the oil & gas, nuclear and renewable energy industries.

Arc Energy Resources’ weld overlay cladding service protects valves and actuator surfaces from corrosion and wear

The accreditation follows a placement in the top six of UK companies in the Manufacturing, Logistics and Transport category of the inaugural St John Ambulance First Aid in the Workplace Awards in November 2011. CRANE Launch Press-Fit Valve Range Crane Fluid Systems launches cost-effective Press-Fit valve range A core range of Press-Fit valves, featuring integrated Geberit Mapress adaptors, has been launched by leading valve manufacturer Crane Fluid Systems. Comprising a ball, balancing, strainer and check valve, this new range connects effortlessly, offering building services engineers a variety of time and costsaving benefits, as well as the excellent quality and reliability comparable with traditional threaded or soldered joints. Suitable for use with both copper (R220 soft copper (12-22mm), R250 semi-hard copper (12-28mm) and R290 hard copper (12-108mm) and Geberit Mapress Stainless and Carbon Steel tubing, this range features the same exacting specification as Crane Fluid Systems’ valves, but with the additional benefits of integrated Geberit Mapress adaptors. By supplying the valve and adaptors assembled and tested as one unit, the number of purchased components and joints required on site can be halved. This not only reduces the overall cost, it also significantly reduces the risk of a leak. The Press-Fit valve range is particularly suitable for pre-fabrication, thanks to the accuracy that can be achieved – pipes can be pre-cut, safe in the knowledge that the exact dimensions and tolerances are known and can be relied upon. Valued for its ability to make installation faster and cleaner, without the health and safety risk factors of soldering and threading, Mapress Press-Fit technology is increasingly being recognised for its reliability and added value. Unlike other brands on the market, both Crane Fluid Systems’ valves and Geberit Mapress adaptors have redesigned parallel threads to enhance thread engagement. This ensures a superior resistance to bending forces, and much greater reliability. In fact, the Crane Fluid Systems’ rigorous bend and vibration testing (to EN331 and DVGW respectively) has revealed that its new Press-Fit valves are more stable than other similar products on the market. Plus, to ensure there is no variability in terms of quality, every single valve undergoes a thorough 6 bar air underwater test before it leaves the factory. 92

SUMMER 2012

Crane Fluid Systems’ new Press-Fit valve range offers the benefits of integrated Geberit Mapress connectors

It’s not just strength and integrity that puts this range of Press-Fit valves ahead of the field, they also boast a unique, patented solution to the problem of identifying un-pressed joints. Three ‘flats’ are designed in to each ‘O’ ring, and act as defined leak paths, so un-pressed joints can be identified during the pressure test process. If a leak is found, the benefit of Press-Fit becomes all the more apparent, since the joint can be pressed without draining down the system, and the associated time and cost implications can be avoided. Also designed to reveal whether a joint has been pressed or not, a white foil indicator surrounds the pressing contours of the adaptor, and drops off once the Press-Fit Tool has been used, enabling the installer to see at a glance which joints have been completed. The Press-Fit valves also come with white end caps, to avoid contamination in transit and storage, and clearly display the pipe size. These plastic components are both recyclable, to enable best practice when it comes to site waste management.
