A new Sainsbury’s for
Olney
Artist’s impression of new store
Introduction We are bringing forward proposals for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket and petrol station in Olney. Our proposals would: Increase food shopping choice by providing a new store to fulfil a main weekly food shop in Olney Provide a petrol station enabling residents to fill-up on fuel locally Create approximately 160 jobs including full and part-time positions for local people We would like to know what you think of our proposals before we submit a planning application. This brochure provides more information on our plans and enclosed is a feedback form on which you can provide us with your comments. Alternatively you can speak to us at our public exhibition at the Olney Centre on: Friday 4th July - 2pm to 7pm Saturday 5th July - 10am to 2pm
A new Sainsbury’s for Olney Accessing the store
We are proposing a new Sainsbury’s supermarket and petrol station in the north of Olney, on the junction between Lavendon Road and Warrington Road.
Access to our store would be from a new mini roundabout on Lavendon Road. A separate access on Warrington Road would be provided for delivery vehicles to the store.

As part of our proposals, two new bus stops would be provided on Lavendon Road. To provide pedestrian access, we would introduce new footways and create a pedestrian crossing over Lavendon Road. We would also provide dedicated cycle parking spaces for bicycle users.

Improving food choice Research has found that nearly three quarters (73%) of households in Olney currently leave the town for their main food shop, with residents primarily travelling to Milton Keynes, Wellingborough or Bedford. We believe a new Sainsbury’s supermarket would help to increase main food shopping choice in the town. It would also be more convenient, reducing the time and distance many residents are currently travelling to visit a supermarket. The proposed store would be larger than the existing Co-op which is 6,700 sq ft but about one-fifth the size of the Tesco Extra in Kingston, Milton Keynes which is 101,000 sq ft. This would allow us to provide a wider range of food and groceries than is currently available in Olney but in a store that is an appropriate size for the town.
Warrington Rd
The site has previously been used as a quarry and there is planning permission on part of the site for a new garage workshop, petrol station, shop and flats to be built.

The new store would help to attract trade that is currently lost from the town and provide the opportunity for more people to make linked shopping trips to other retailers in Olney, which serve a more specialist or top-up shopping function than our proposed supermarket.
What’s in store? Our proposed store would have a sales area of circa 19,500 sq ft (1,800 sq m). The vast majority of the sales space (90%) would be used to provide food and everyday household products. This would include a broad selection of our popular Taste the Difference, Be Good to Yourself, By Sainsbury’s, SO Organic, Freefrom, Fairtrade and Basics ranges. The store would also include: Fresh meat, fish, delicatessen and pizza counters Hot food counter and in-store bakery
203 parking spaces, including nine disabled and eight parent and child spaces Six pump petrol station (allowing up to twelve vehicles to be fuelled simultaneously) The remaining sales space would be used to provide a limited range of complementary non-food items customers would typically expect to find at a small supermarket. The store would not include a restaurant, pharmacy or any clothing or concession space to focus on meeting a main food shopping need in Olney.

We are planning to widen Lavendon Road and Warrington Road at the roundabout junction where these roads meet. These road improvements will increase capacity to accommodate local resident journeys to the store and petrol station. The new store would serve local residents currently shopping further afield. It would therefore reduce overall driving distance by reducing the need for residents to travel elsewhere for their main food shop.
Jobs Approximately 160 full and part-time positions would be created in a range of positions and levels at the store. As part of our ‘You Can’ training and skills programme, all store colleagues are encouraged to learn and develop new skills with no limit to progress. Training is available in a wide range of areas, including team leadership, management, apprenticeships, numeracy and literacy.

Design We are proposing a modern store design incorporating some of the latest green initiatives to reduce our energy consumption.

Glazing is proposed in the store frontage to maximise natural daylight inside the store. The use of timber and cladding would help to soften the appearance of the store and create visual interest to the building. The store could also include: A biomass boiler to provide energy for heating and hot water at the store and meet up to 30% of the store’s total energy requirements from renewable energy sources Roof lights to maximise natural daylight inside the store Modern low energy LED lighting

Our Values We have five values that provide the framework for how we do business at Sainsbury’s. Best for food and health We were the first UK retailer to apply front of pack Multiple Traffic Light nutritional labelling. We have also been part of the Department for Health’s Responsibility Deal from the outset, building on our work over a number of years to make our food healthier. Sourcing with integrity We have supported British farming for over 140 years and have a focus on providing great products at fair prices in a way that is better for animals, farmers, growers and suppliers. Respect for our environment We aim to be the UK’s greenest grocer and look to act sustainably, address climate change and conserve resources. We are proud to have achieved Zero Waste to Landfill, are the UK’s largest retail user of anaerobic digestion and have donated 6.8m meals through food donation partnerships.

A great place to work Over 22,000 of our colleagues have attended training at our Food and Bakery Colleges (accredited by City & Guilds). We work closely with Remploy, Mencap, Shaw Trust and Job Centre Plus to match candidates to the right jobs and have also signed up to Local Employment Partnerships since 2007 to help ex-offenders and the long term unemployed back into the work. Making a positive difference to the community We want to make a positive difference in the communities we are part of. Through our Active Kids programme we have donated over £136m worth of sports and cooking equipment. In the last few weeks, our new store in Shenley Church End in Milton Keynes has donated 180 children’s high visibility jackets to Ashbrook School as part of Walk to School week.
