The May issues will be delivered to you late April. We have brought the distribution forward a little so that the vast majority will be delivered ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire day on 30th April. This will allow us to include all the most up to date information for the events of the day within our pages. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th April (yes the closing date has to be early too – although actually still the 2nd Friday of the month as it usually is). Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.

You will be receiving this magazine sometime over the Easter period, and this year Easter Sunday coincides with the start of British Summer time. This brings with it the lighter evenings and the promise of warmer days. It does also mean that Easter Sunday is an hour shorter than it should be, but for me that is a small price to pay for the added daylight at the end of each day.

Mr Creek with his amazing orchids Our March meeting was enjoyed by all. Mr Creek spoke about the care of orchids, which was very enlightening. He summed up his talk by saying orchids thrive on ‘controlled neglect’ and no-one should be scared of looking after them. He brought an array of orchid species for members to purchase. Our next meeting on Tuesday 5th April, is a pruning demonstration by Corinne Finlan, one of our members.

There will be plenty of games and other activities to get involved with such as; -Cardboard box challenge -After eight challenge... AND SO MUCH MORE!!

Our May meeting will be a talk on growing vegetables.

YOGA Here at Move and Inspire Me, we believe that Yoga is one of the most beneficial practices you can do, both for mind and body. Just a few of the benefits include weight maintenance, de-stressing, lower blood pressure, more flexibility, stronger joints and muscles. We have 2 Yoga classes weekly, and a no-hassle payment system that lets you join in with any class that fits into your schedule that week Don’t just take our word for it, here is what some of our customers have to say about our classes; “I have been attending Yoga now for 18 months and love it. I have a few health issues so was worried whether I would be able to do it. Deborah is extremely supportive, will tailor moves to help individuals. There is no pressure to keep up and I find it a very inspirational class. Everyone is so supportive of each other and I have to say that after I finish the class I feel so invigorated, relaxed and at peace and as though I am truly getting to know my body. I would recommend the class to anyone. It is truly brilliant.” Becki

“A lovely way to start or finish the week! Deborah works hard to ensure all her clients are catered for at Move and Inspire Me Yoga. Any injuries or problems are accounted for and you leave feeling relaxed and invigorated. My frozen shoulder has greatly improved since I rejoined yoga, postures were adapted and specific stretches ensured a safe and comfortable return to mobility. I love my weekly yoga and would encourage everyone to give it a go! You’ll feel fitter, more flexible and make new friends, what’s not to like?!” Cate

The Byrne Practice SOLICITORS

The curse of care fees! Many couples make standard ‘Mirror Wills’ which leave everything to the surviving spouse and then on the death of the surviving spouse everything passes to the children of the marriage. These Wills are perfectly acceptable and perfectly valid however have you considered the impact of care fees if the surviving spouse was to end up in care? Under the terms of a Mirror Will the surviving spouse inherits all of the assets of the marriage, the bank accounts, the car and generally the biggest asset you own – your home. If the surviving spouse then needs care and is financially assessed by the Local Authority, the assets (including the property) are then used to pay for their care until they have depleted the value of their assets down to only £14,250.

But what if you had prepared Property Trust Wills? The deceased spouse’s share in the property passes into a trust for the benefit of the children. The share of the property in this trust is not included as an asset for the purposes of a financial assessment – you have just protected half of the value of your home! Here at The Byrne Practice we can prepare your Property Trust Wills for a fixed fee of £303.00 including VAT and disbursements. Act now, call Katy Delaney at The Byrne Practice

Greystones Sunday 17th April Two concerts: 2pm and 8pm / £15. The Young Uns . I have seen these 3 lads from Middlesborough on a number of occasions. They are simply brilliant. Don’t expect and easy ride with them, their humour will cut like a knife . They come from a part of the country where the industry has vanished and unemployment become a way of life, this is very much a part of who they are. Their musicianship and 3 part harmonies are to die for. Multi award winning trio, voted Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Band 2015. One of the most sought after acts on the English folk scene. Hello from all at Mayflower Sanctuary We are very giddy at the moment as we have 7 puppies arrived, they are just 5 weeks old. We all love puppies, even though they are hard work, they give us such a feel good factor. Their mummy is also with us. The puppies will not be ready for adoption until they are 8 weeks old. However please consider your lifestyle before thinking of adopting a puppy or any young dog.

Finding a forever home

We have around 5 of our residents that have been with us a while and are desperate for that loving home, fireplace or knee. Sometimes some of our dogs are overlooked because maybe they are too noisy in kennels and it puts people off even considering them as pets. Please remember dogs do behave very differently in kennels and that noisy barking dog that you overlook here is probably going to behave very differently in your home.

see a huge difference when they come back to us. We are hoping they will be ready for the next stage and that is to be re homed with loving families.

If someone is interested in one of our residents we also have a paddock where you are able to take your chosen dog to have a play and see how you gel together. If you already have a dog and want to know if your dog and your chosen dog will be compatible we ask that you bring your dog to the Sanctuary in order that they can both meet. We have many dogs of all shapes and sizes, also lots of lovely cats. No kittens just yet it’s a little early for kittens. Our Sanctuary is beautiful, full of life and hope and all our residents waiting for special people to give them a second chance. So if you are considering adopting a cat or dog please come along and see us, we will look forward to your visit. Update on Tim that had a heart operation, he is doing really well, busy playing and being a little star with his new owners. Lucky little boy. Boot camp is going well for our 6 residents that went back to school and re training. Apparently we will

Lucy is NOT a lap-cat. If you look carefully you will notice that she is a polydactyl cat which means she has extra toes. Design Notes

Let there be Light! Spring is round the corner – how welcome and wonderful! The daffodils are smiling, our afternoons are lengthening – let there be LIGHT! Light in our homes is an interesting but difficult topic. It is the most tricky thing to achieve good lighting throughout your home and in many respects it is a rather neglected subject because I think it can be a little daunting. I am not talking about the necessary standard lighting, more about ‘mood’ lighting, the type that adds an extra layer of interest within a room. Different heights of lamps can provide pleasing effects, for example if you place an uplighter close to the floor the mood immediately changes. ‘Pebble’ lights laid on the floor add interest, as do the charming paper pleated lights which come in many sizes and shapes and are inexpensive. The new LED lights are not always aesthetically pleasing and sometimes cast a cool look, but their efficiency and low level running costs are something to consider. So don’t dismiss them too quickly even though they may be more functional than ‘designer’. In modern interiors they are at ease in their surroundings, but in a more traditional setting the light can be harsh. 16

Bawtry Today

However they do suit kitchens and bathrooms very well. Have you tried any of the new styled CURRENT lampshades? ...great patterns, new shapes and bold colours can make an exciting statement and update your look very easily. Make sure when you are doing any sort of revamp you consider the lighting alongside all other things and try some new ideas. It will make all the difference and provide both interest and impact. As daylight closes in and darkness follows….

CALLING ALL ARTISTS, MAKERS, PERFORMERS, MUSICIANS, POETS, WRITERS... AN INSPIRING AND DIVERSE MIX OF VISUAL ART, CREATIVITY, THEATRE, MUSIC AND POETRY is to be showcased at many venues in and around Retford throughout the bank holiday weekend of 28th to 30th May, 2016. Artists of every kind are invited to take part and are being given the opportunity to exhibit or perform their work for free in the first ever ‘Retford Arts Festival’. Many local artists including: Angie Larry, Broonzy Williams, Elvira Foster, Joan Wilcox, Hilary Cartmel, John Nooth, Elda Bowie, John Wright, Artempo and Gerry Fruin have already accepted the invitation to join this celebration of local talent and will ensure that ‘Retford Arts Festival’ is the must-visit, free event in north Notts. They will be exhibiting their work in many familiar places around the town such as: The Hub; West Street Gallery; Print Inc Co; Swanyard Music Studios; the Brick and Tile pub; St Swithun’s Church; Indigo Blu; Babworth Church; and Spencers. Early interest in the festival indicates that more venues will be needed. Anyone who can offer exhibition or performance space should contact The Hub without delay to ensure their venue is included in the programme. Artists, performers, poets, writers and makers, as well as those who would like to host events, are urged to register their interest as soon as possible. There are also opportunities to demonstrate support through: sponsorship of individual events, provision of printed materials and signage, donations to help toward the costs of hiring equipment and of course, volunteering in any capacity. For further information please visit www.retfordhub. org or call The Hub on 01777 860414. Anyone who 20

would like to take part or exhibit their work is invited to register their interest through The Hub by 23 April, 2016. The creation of ‘Retford Arts Festival’ follows the establishment of the recently created Hub situated at 11 Church Gate, Retford DN22 6PA. Through his work at The Hub, Chris Daniels very quickly realised there was a wealth of expertise that deserved to be showcased. What better way to do this than for Retford to have its very own Arts Festival and so, under his pioneering leadership, the festival was born! He firmly believes that this unique festival will bring visitors to Retford and increase footfall in and around the town. He commented: ‘Retford Arts Festival will create an awareness of the huge amount of talent that exists in our area and help to build a strong artistic community but above all, it is a chance for everyone to get together and have fun! There will be opportunities to have-a-go at workshops, see demonstrations, talks and taster sessions... in fact something for the entire family to enjoy together over the bank holiday weekend.’ T

Pastor’s Page A few weeks ago our lovely dog, Ellie, had to be put down after suffering ever more intense fits over a two week period. We think she had a bit of spaniel, collie, whippet and other breeds in her; but for us her multifacetted genetic background was part of her appeal. Over the 6+ years we had Ellie she became an important part of our family with her own individual, loving personality. All four of us in the family cried when she died and for days we kept expecting to see her lying on the sofa, even putting food in her bowl. There are about 9 million pet dogs and 8 million pet cats in the UK; just under half of UK households have a pet of some sort. Why do we do it? We know full well that our beloved dog, cat, guinea pig, budgerigar, etc. will most likely die on us and that we will suffer real grief at their loss. I suppose we have pets because we have love to give and because we want to receive love from them – dogs are great for that, goldfish less so. We British are renown for our love of animals but the Bible tells us that God loves them too: The book of Psalms says that God is concerned for all His creation, including the animals He created: “He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.”, 22

Bawtry Today

D “The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God”; it is implied that God feeds them. Also, Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.” If people are made in the image of God, as the Bible says, then it would make sense that we care about animals, just as God does. This means that we in Britain are probably more Biblical than we realise. So the next time you stroke a dog, scratch a cat or whistle at a budgie, take a moment and thank God for our pets which so enhance our lives. And thank Him for the opportunity to care for them. At the beginning of March we took home another dog from a rescue centre. Harry is a big beautiful greyhound and we are looking forward to him settling into the family; once we’ve got him house-trained. One thing is for sure, and that is he is very different to Ellie (four times the size to start with) and will, no doubt, adapt our lives to his demands in no time. He is another opportunity for us to reflect the image of God within us; probably for 10 years before we find ourselves crying again.

Neighbourhood Plan Exhibition moves to the Library – A further Chance to have your say What is Bawtry like to live in? What will it be like in the future? If you missed the consultaion Exhibition at The Crown Hotel in February, then please call in at the Library any time during April. Last year, Bawtry Town Council decided that a Neighbourhood Plan should be made. That’s a way of giving local people more say in what happens. If supported by a majority of local residents, a Neighbourhood Plan becomes a statutory document that the local Planning Authority (DMBC) has to adopt, to sit alongside its own planning policies, and therefore use it when determining planning matters. A Steering Group to make the Plan was established, which has wide representation from the town. The Steering Group has been working to identify what it is about Bawtry that its residents value most highly, and what concerns them most. Major sources of information have been the Bawtry Residents’ Group, Bawtry Retail Association, the Town Council, and a survey questionnaire delivered to all the households and businesses in Bawtry. A picture of the town had emerged, and this was presented at the February consultation exhibition. The exhibition was very well attended, and the Steering Group is currently analysing the feedback received on the day. The development of the Neighbourhood Plan is a continuous consultation exercise, and if you missed the exhibition, it is not too late to have your say. Please take advantage of this further opportunity to help shape the future of your home town. The sense of Bawtry obtained so far is of a friendly, busy place with a rich history, where residents value 28

Bawtry Today

“small town” life but also enjoy the facilities of a larger community. The variety of independent retailers is highly valued, but the number of these is perceived to be diminishing and there is evidence Bawtry is having difficulty continuing to attract sufficient customers to sustain a wide range of retailers. The one sector of the town’s economy that is thriving is the nightlife – bars, restaurants and pubs. Many residents approve of the growth that has occurred in that sector, but just as many feel it has gone too far and is damaging the town. Many people – residents and traders – would welcome the return of a proper market to the town. Traffic appears to be a big problem for Bawtry. There’s too much of it, congesting junctions and making it unsafe to cross the road. It goes too fast, and there are too many HGV’s. Parking also attracts critical comment from many respondents. They say – variously - there’s not enough of it, it is too expensive, the charging hours are too long, it is too aggressively enforced, and it makes the town centre unattractive. Many residents complain of nuisance parking, in residential streets, on pavements, and so on. Most residents describe Bawtry as a pretty market town – but also one which is becoming very tired. They refer to unsafe and uneven pavements, poorly maintained verges, litter, and dog mess in the play areas. There are no big surprises here but the Steering Group needs to ensure its interpretation is accurate, and obtain further contributions from the public. That is the purpose of the consultation exhibition. The highest possible level of confidence is required, to enable the Group to create a strategy for the future – to protect what is best about Bawtry, and to successfully address the concerns identified. Misson & Springs WI Second helpings, especially of dessert, don’t always live up to expectations, but we were not at all disappointed by the return visit of Jacqui Housely from CherryCupcakes, this time without the snow. Her organisation prior to the meeting is second to none, and we arrived to find tables covered in all the equipment and ingredients we needed to practise our decorating skills. Jacqui’s demonstration is clear and concise; her huge range and assortment of moulds and cutters allowed us to execute our own designs with varying degrees of success but with equal enjoyment, and Jacqui was always on hand to offer advice and support. We can thoroughly recommend a cupcake session for any group; do look at Jacqui’s website cherry-cupcakes. co.uk where you will find details of all her work or contact her at cherrycupcake@mail.com or 07515 900842. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 30th March when we will have a short Annual Meeting followed by various craft activities, all accompanied by refreshments, including home-made cake. We were happy to see some new faces at our February meeting, and hope that you, too, will come and join us where you will be assured of a warm welcome. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; don’t hesitate to turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796975578 for any further information.

2008(Bawtry) SQUADRON SERVING OTHERS When we decide to join the air cadets its on a voluntary basis, we don’t get paid and we let our cadets take the glory. But our cadets deserve it. As well as achieving and experiencing new opportunities for themselves they also give up their time to help others. The cadets take time out to help with RAFA, SUE RYDER, THE POPPY APPEAL and now the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION. Along with the usual school, college, university and work commitments our cadets have also volunteer for bag packing days at local supermarkets, bucket collections at the Keepmoat Stadium and even standing out in the rain for the yearly Poppy Appeal. The cadets also need to collect funds for their own squadron too. Since we try and be a presence in our area, and appear at many local events throughout the year, we are also beginning to try and raise donations and sponsorship for ourselves. We teach our Cadets First Aid and CPR, they walk for miles for the yearly Cosford Marches and finally they learn how to survive out side with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Adventure Training camps. All this enriches a teenager’s life in so many ways. To reiterate what the cadets is about, it’s an organisation that uses the discipline, respect and fellowship of the Royal Air Force. It creates determination, dedication and ambition in young 34

people. It can help create a career or at least access to one. It can help a young person build up their life skills, their confidence and give them experiences they would not necessarily ever have the resources to do. It can also give them the chance to go to places they could never imagine going to and create friendships that can last a lifetime. This year 2008(BAWTRY) AIRCADETS is 60 years old and a celebration day is being organized to commemorate this, we are beginning to hear from some Ex-Cadets and will be very interested to hear their stories and how the Air Cadets affected their lives.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring or making a donation to the air cadets please contact us, every little bit is appreciated. S E T I N U R E W O P L PEDA OUR TOWN With the Tour de Yorkshire just a few weeks away we’re dedicating this month’s news to welcoming the Tour to Bawtry! We’re pleased to say that we’re pulling out all the stops to make it a day to remember as the town’s businesses, retailers and residents get involved. And, with over 1.5 million spectators lining the route in 2015, and over 6 million enjoying the event live on TV, it seems only right that Bawtry flies the proverbial flag. Businesses will be hoisting yellow flags, decorating their windows with themed displays and trimming up their exteriors with flowers, bunting and flags as well as bikes that have been painted yellow and decorated to welcome Le Tour as it passes through Bawtry on Saturday 30th April. Yellow flags and whistles will be handed to all the children wearing yellow on the day and in addition, special events and offers will be taking place in honour of Le Tour – these will be confirmed closer to the time. “The inaugural Ladies race will pass through Bawtry from around 10.30 am with the men’s race following from 4 pm,” said Rebecca Dickenson, Chair of Bawtry Retail Association. “More plans are still to be finalised but, in the meantime, we hope that as many Bawtry folk will support this amazing occasion and help us to really put Bawtry on the Yorkshire, national and international map.” The route which will enter Bawtry close to its Nottinghamshire border and pass through the town before forking right towards Austerfield, will 36

snake its way through the borough for around 50 miles before its spectacular sprint finish along Bennetthorpe. For anyone who will be supporting the race in and around Bawtry, commemorative T-Shirts are available from AiroSportwear by calling 01302 741 708 or visiting http://www.airosportswear.com/ shop/bra-commemorative-t-shirt.html And, as if all this cycling wasn’t enough Helen Wallace from Bawtry Eye Academy is aiming to transform herself from ‘Zero to Hero’ as she takes to a bike for her very first long distance ride to raise funds for Doncaster charity, Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support. She will cycle the 81 miles from Otley to Doncaster (Stage 2 of the Tour de Yorkshire) accompanied by her colleague Sonny Sethi on Sunday 24th April 2016. Bawtry retailers Bawtry Eye Academy together with @ She Knows and Feast have been working hard to recruit local cyclists, clubs and support along the route to gather as much support as possible to make it a memorable event. Tickhill and District Lions On Saturday 5th March our Charter Night Dinner and Dance, held at Doncaster Golf Club, Bessacarr celebrated 38 years of local presence after our club was formed out of North Notts Lions Club in 1978. With excellent food, music to get everyone dancing and a wide range of prizes in the raffle a good night was had by all. As I prepare this report a fortnight before Easter it is pleasing to know that all sixty of our Giant Easter Eggs are with hotels, restaurants, pubs, shops and clubs for raffling off to customers. We are so grateful for the kindness of all the businesses and their customers in supporting the fundraising which enables us to maintain our help for needy individuals, causes and charities. Sunday 30th April will be a big day for Tickhill with the Tour de Yorkshire cycle races passing through

on the same day as the Scarecrow Festival is being held. With more than five hours between the race for the ladies and the men’s race, Tickhill is keen to provide suitable facilities for visitors who may stay all day scarecrow spotting and watching the cycling. Lions will be running a barbecue stall alongside the Scarbrough Arms Beer Festival to assist with feeding the expected crowds. On Friday 24th June there will be another event in the Scarbrough Arms car park - our second ‘Summer Bash’, featuring live music, good food and real ales and on the Sunday of that weekend Thorne Rural Lions Club are organising an 11 mile walk from Doncaster to Thorne in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. For further information on these events we may be contacted through the following:Email : contact@tickhill-lions.com Phone: 0844 963 2462 Website: www.tickhill-lions.com Facebook: facebook.com/tickhill.lions

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Spring has Sprung Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs!

How to… Plant a container-grown shrub. Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the root ball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the root ball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the root ball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.

Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from wellrotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely. 38

Avoid Fraud

Telephone Fraud Avoid becoming a Victim There are certain crimes that tend to affect the more vulnerable members of our community. Telephone fraud is one of those. Older people are regularly targeted by criminals via their telephone, nearly £24m was lost to phone scams in 2014. In simple terms, fraud is when: • A criminal uses dishonest methods to take something valuable from another person • A person pretends to be someone else in order to trick you • Something that is meant to look like the real thing in order to deceive. The good news is that we can all take some simple steps to help us not becoming a victim of telephone fraud. Following these tips below will help prevent you becoming a victim. • Be careful if a company calls you to discuss your investments. They may build up your trust in them … but one evening may ring with an excellent opportunity too good to miss and you have to act fast to get this great deal. Keep calm and hang up, do not give in to pressure and never invest without carrying out research. • Criminals call pretending to be from you bank or building society or police claiming a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card or your credit card has been cloned. They may ask for your card pin number. Do not give this out, put the phone down and inform the police. • You receive a call from Microsoft or other large IT company informing you that your computer has a virus. You are asked to download software onto your machine to fix it and then provide your card details. Keep calm, hang up. Keep your anti-virus software up to date, warn other about the call. • A call from a charity asking if you will donate to their cause by setting up a direct debit, not necessarily a fraud attempt but more a nuisance call perhaps. If you do agree then you will receive 40

further calls asking for more money. Never give your card details out over the phone. Devices called ‘Call Blockers’ are available to purchase, some are better than others, one of the best is called ‘True Call’ and used by many Trading Standards departments. Details can be found here: www.truecall.co.uk or by ringing 0800 0 336 339 Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), it will not stop all unwanted calls but will reduce the number you receive, details can be found by ringing 020 7291 3320 or visiting: www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html Contact your telephone provider, some provide an additional call blocking service for a small additional monthly fee. Some newer telephones you can now purchase has the ‘True Call’ device pre-installed. Mobile phone ‘Apps’ are available, some free, some for a few pounds that act as a nuisance call blocker, they are available for both Android and IPhone devices. In 1605 Clyfton was dismissed for refusing to submit to the demands that clergy observe strict conformity with the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. The separatists, who believed in religious freedom, were led by John Carver of Doncaster, William Bradford of Austerfield and William Brewster of Scrooby. Under their leadership they founded Plimoth Colony which was the first settlement in New England and were known as the Pilgrim Fathers. There will be a talk at 2pm on Sunday 8th May. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Update from Rachael Blake – Councillor for Rossington, Bawtry and Austerfield Another busy month in the ward responding to residents’ concerns that affect the whole village as well as individual problems. Also, it has been a really exciting month, working with community groups and community venues to make sure that Bawtry and Austerfield is the place to watch the Tour de Yorkshire – more details below. Making our ward safer It is very frustrating as a councillor when improvements don’t happen as quickly as promised and even worse, we can all see that something is in place but is taped up and not working. I refer to the 20mph flashing signs on Station Road which are now in place so DMBC have done their bit, but we are now waiting for the power company to complete the job and get the lights working to make it safer around the school. In my weekly emails to our Highways team I ask for progress on this and I will keep you informed. Parking illegally or inconsiderately is something that does have an impact on resident’s safety. I asked our enforcement team to look at streets in Bawtry, particularly South Parade (following information received from a parish councillor) and parking tickets were issued as they were in other parts of the town. I have asked the enforcement team to come to Bawtry on a regular basis and if you have concerns about particular streets, please do let me know and I can ask them to target their efforts there. I am working with the Residents Group to campaign to have all our roads reduced to 30mph. When I moved here 7 years ago and my daughter and I used to cycle to Mayflower I contacted our Highways Department to express my surprise that our roads were not all 30mph due to the near misses I frequently witnessed and even having an island in the middle, doesn’t help trying to get an 8 year old with a bike across the roads when cars are doing well over 30mph. Please look out for the Residents Group petition and sign it and join us in our campaigning days. I did receive complaints about the closure of the A1 and the dreadful impact this had on residents along the main roads. The closure was due to horticultural works being done and in my discussions with the Highways Agency they suggested that all I could do was talk to the Local Authority about their choice of diversionary routes which I am doing. Safer Communities (PACT) Meetings – these will be taking place starting in April and moved around the area. If you would like details about these, please do contact me. 44

A Cleaner ward The Clean for the Queen event that I mentioned last time was postponed due to it clashing with Mothering Sunday and many of the volunteers who wanted to help were no longer able to. I will be arranging something again in April, so please look out for details. It was good to see our approaches into Bawtry being tidied up and following requests from residents the footpaths cleared of overhanging branches in Austerfield and along Doncaster Road. Still a problem? Please let me know. Tour de Yorkshire Bawtry Retailers Association are going to be making the town centre look fantastic with flowers and flags and decorations and I have been working with community groups to provide a whole range of activities for residents of all ages to get involved. The women’s race will come through about 11 and the men’s about 5.30ish. A leaflet detailing all our events will be available in the middle of April as we still have final preparations to make but to date we have: Bawtry Community Library – all day coffee morning, seating, toilets, and outside seating(weather permitting) Phoenix Theatre – open for visitors Mayflower School – amazing land art (not to be missed), bouncy castles, games, Austerfield Centre – food, parking, games, children’s cycle circuit and in the evening, a beetle (bike) drive with a difference. Come along and watch the races – and in between wander around Bawtry and Austerfield. If you want to be involved rather than watching, we need lots of volunteers so please get in touch. My surgeries and Contact Details Bawtry Library Coffee Morning - 2nd Friday of every month from 10am - 12. Austerfield - Austerfield Parish Council meeting on 3rd Monday of every month. Also I will be popping into the lunch club at Austerfield so I can meet you there. Please don’t wait for my surgeries, please call me on 710251 or 07976896563 Follow me on Twitter - CllrRachaelB Unfortunately I don’t have the space to include everything I am doing, so please do get in touch if you want more information about anything I have included, or to suggest something I haven’t. Best wishes

Among the many issues highlighted by the group and the residents is the proposed new indoor car parking facility on Tickhill Road. Whilst the additional car parking spaces have been broadly welcomed by those contributing to the debate via the BRG Facebook page, a number of residents also expressed some concerns. These generally focused on the impact the car park would have on the safety of both pedestrians and road users. Given the noticeable increase in traffic levels and vehicles which appear to be speeding along Tickhill Road combined with cars turning out of the proposed car park (un-sighted due to the existing parking arrangements on Tickhill Road) the opinion is that this would be a recipe for disaster and an accident waiting to happen. The Group are also actively working with Ward Council Rachael Blake and Bawtry Town Council to campaign for the 30 mph speed limit for vehicles approaching Bawtry from Doncaster to start before the Kingswood estate and Hudson Yard. In light of the recent serious accident, the number of near misses, apparent speeding vehicles recently and school children crossing at the bottom of Ingham Road, it is hoped that a 20mph flashing sign can be installed and activated at school crossing times, similar to the one now installed on Station Road. Finally, on behalf of the BRG I would like to thank Craig for his continued support in allowing us to use the Crown Hotel for our meetings, it is very much appreciated. Meetings will continue on a bimonthly basis on the last Thursday of the month starting at 7.30pm in the Crown Hotel. The next meeting is planned for the 26th May when it is hoped to have a guest speaker, possibly from the Airport. Regards

Doug Cartwright Chair of BRG

BAWTRY WI Many thanks to Alicia Kaill from Bawtry Gym who initiated us all into the art of Chair Yoga at our February meeting. It proved to be a very enjoyable experience and one which benefited both body and mind. There are many different forms of yoga, some more dynamic than others but Alicia was able to show us that it can be adapted to suit everyone with no specialist equipment needed. With stretching and toning postures, breathing exercises and wonderful relaxation to round it off, we all felt refreshed and ready for anything!

Service Dear Friends, Most churches prepare for Easter by organising lent courses. I was at one recently and we reminded ourselves that Jesus predicted his death and resurrection but his followers did not get it. Rather they were busy fighting amongst themselves about who would be the greatest after Jesus leaving them. Jesus found out and his response is as follows: So Jesus called them to him and said, “As you know, the kings and great men of the earth lord it over the people; but among you it is different. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. And whoever wants to be greatest of all must be the slave of all. For even I, the Messiah, am not here to be served, but to help others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”’ (Mark 10: 42 - 45) (Living Bible) In today’s world, a leader usually has special privileges and is treated better than everyone else. I wonder how you would feel if you arrive at work one day and find your boss cleaning the office. How about your husband cooking you a meal after you have spent a long day with the children or at work? And what if he did that often? Some of us may find these illustrations very unusual? This is because some people and cultures have a different conception of what leadership and service are. Some people even see service as a form of weakness. However, Jesus tells us and shows us that service is a sign of strength. It takes inner strength to serve those around you. I wonder if leaders who find it difficult to serve are simply afraid of their weaknesses.

different from what the world expects. I wonder if I can remind you that being a leader involves helping others. Leadership also includes being prepared to accept your fault when you are wrong. What about being honest and accepting that you do not know the answer to a problem? That is a sign of good leadership. It will even be prudent if you ask for help as you lead people. I wonder if you can pause and take a look at the leadership examples around you and at your own leadership style as well. If you’re a parent, how do you lead your children? As a husband, how do you serve your wife? Wives, how do you serve your husbands? What about being the boss at your workplace or in the community? How do you serve? Service is love as well. I want to remind my Welsh friends that in March you celebrated St. David’s Day. As at the time of writing this piece, my Irish friends were also preparing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. These two saints are good examples of the fact that good leadership requires love and service. This Easter season, I wonder if I can remind you that Jesus served his followers and others even to his death. He rose from death and empowers us to love as he did. He is our servant-leader and wants us to follow him. We can only do so if we ask God to empower and guide our leadership and relationships with other people. He also entreats us to love and serve others as he did. May God bless you in all your endeavours especially, as you serve this month. Yours sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick, Auckley, Bawtry Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road, and Tickhill. Phone: 01302857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk Home Address: 10, Fieldhouse Road, Sprotbrough, Doncaster DN5 7RP

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club. Men of Bawtry lie you sleeping? Are you not a good watch keeping? This Magazine tells you all Why so few do heed the call? The above doggerel was inspired (!) by a recent membership survey which revealed that only 5 of our 82 members actually live in Bawtry. Apart from those living in Tickhill more live in Bessacarr and almost as many live in Retford as live in Bawtry. And this is the Tickhill AND BAWTRY Probus Club! Probus is a friendship club for retired professional and businessmen (we interpret theses terms quite widely). We meet at 10.00 for 10.30 at the Millstone Hotel, Tickhill on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month when we have speaker, after which many of our members can be found in the bar and some stay to lunch We would love to welcome more members from Bawtry. If you think it may suit you either just turn up as a guest at one of our meetings to see what they are like or get in touch with one of our Bawtry members listed below: Frank Anderson. THANK YOU

THANK YOU

THANK YOU On Saturday 5th March I celebrated a Big 0 Birthday at The Austerfield Community Centre. I would like to say a really big ‘Thank You’ to everyone attending and who helped to make this a memorable party for me. I had requested that instead of guests buying me gifts, there would be a Donation Post Box for them to put money into. This would then be shared between The Austerfield Study Centre, St. Helena’s Church and myself. I am very pleased to say that £446 was raised so £150 each to the centre & church and £146 that as an avid crafter I can use to purchase equipment that will benefit others at The Crafty Corner Club. Please see the notice below for information on this club.
