When I first started writing these monthly introductions to the magazines my children weren’t even all at school, now one has finished and making preparations to fly the nest later this year. The 2nd is just a year behind him and has started her search for her future college or university. The youngest has a few years at home yet and in preparation for her being the last one left at home has just talked us into adding a dog to the household! While they don’t need me around as much as they did when they were younger I will still be taking the opportunity to close the office and have a little holiday with them all while they are all willing to holiday with Mum and Dad!

Summer holidays already! For me, that means the need to keep a lot more food in the fridge, being asked for lifts here there and everywhere at any time of day and money disappearing from my purse at an alarming rate! It also means days out, barbeques with family and friends, and an opportunity to spend far less time in front of my computer!

Bandana Challenge - Tia Rescue We are a Shire approved visitors centre and a local charity who look after 35 Shire horses and over a hundred greyhounds and Lurchers along with a menagerie of other animals.

The Bandana Challenge event on 28th August will give the public the chance to see these beautiful dogs and Shire horses as well as all the other animals that make up the Tia family including Dandy and Beano, two mischievous miniature donkeys. We are hoping to smash the Guinness Book of Records for the most dogs wearing bandanas! It currently stands at 764 but we hope to have around 2,000 dogs here. There will be stalls, a dog show and of course the chance to be part of a record breaking team so if you have a furry friend who looks fetching in a bandana come and join the fun.

Please continue to have your say and visit the site at http:// www.bawtryneighbourhoodplan.org.uk Although this is a quiet period at the moment in the development of the plan, there is much work still to be done. In the autumn we will be contacting all the businesses, and community groups within the town, and holding meetings as appropriate. We need your feedback to help shape the future of your home town. If anyone has any ideas as to how to reach the wider community for their views, then please let us know. Remember this is your opportunity to have more say in what happens to the town over the next 15 years or so. If supported by a majority of local residents, a Neighbourhood Plan becomes a statutory document that the local Planning Authority (DMBC) has to adopt, to sit alongside its own planning policies, and therefore use it when determining planning matters. For ‘non planning’ issues, the Plan will set the objectives for the Town Council to strive to achieve to help make Bawtry a better place in which to live, work and visit. As mentioned previously, the sense of Bawtry obtained so far is of a friendly, busy place with a rich history, where residents value “small 8

There’s too much of it, congesting junctions and making it unsafe to cross the road. It goes too fast, and there are too many HGV’s. Parking also attracts critical comment from many respondents. They say – variously - there’s not enough of it, it is too expensive, the charging hours are too long, it is too aggressively enforced, and it makes the town centre unattractive. Many residents complain of nuisance parking, in residential streets, on pavements, and so on. Most residents describe Bawtry as a pretty market town – but also one which is becoming very tired. They refer to unsafe and uneven pavements, poorly maintained verges, litter, and dog mess in the play areas. Are these the issues that you can relate to? HILARY CARTMEL

from Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva’s exhibition at Djanogly in Nottingham

August is the month where everything shuts down cos you’re all away sunning yourselves by the seaside. But there is still stuff going on…. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: until 11th September Doncaster Art Club. Always one of the most popular exhibitions in the annual programme including paintings and drawings in a variety of media by this thriving local club. Until 17th September. Chris Moss: ‘Wild Wire’ Chris Moss makes sculptures of beasts and birds in order to understand them better, both their physiognomy and behaviour. Her sculptures are made from new and reclaimed materials, sourced from every-day suppliers of functional wire and metal products. She describes her work as drawing in 3 dimensions, using the material’s natural tension as a line to describe form and movement. Each work is an original study of anatomy and behaviour, giving a sense of life and energy to the subject. The Annual Open Art submission dates are towards the end of September, entry forms now available at the Museum, so get artmaking and submit it… there are prizes too! www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums 10 BAWTRY TODAY

Curated by local potter Penny Withers, Shaped from the Earth celebrates the diversity of handmade ceramics produced in the city. The exhibition brings together work by a host of talented local makers, including Sarah Villeneau, who is an absolutely astounding artist and whose work I really admire, also Antonia Salmon, Brian Holland, Emilie Taylor, Norman Cherry, Hanne Westegaard and more. www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Yorkshire Sculpture Park k Kaws inside show has finished but you can still see his extraordinary work in the

Park, amongst many others – a great day out for the price of a car-park ticket. Also ‘Editions and Objects’. 8QLTXH charity concert A top tribute act are teaming up with the bereavement charity Rainbows to help them celebrate 25 years of service, by bringing the world’s most authentic tribute to the music of Simon and Garfunkel to Doncaster. Dan Haynes and Pete Richards, like Simon and Garfunkel, met in school and began singing together at just 16 years old. The pair touring as Bookends (their name is taken from their favourite Simon & Garfunkel album) are now wowing audiences around the world with their concert experience. The duo have kindly given up a night of their busy tour dates to perform their concert to help celebrate 25 years of Rainbows, a charity which provides support and understanding for children and young people experiencing lossand grief. 20 BAWTRY TODAY

Described by the BBC as “not your average tribute actâ€?, they don’t dress up or try to act like Simon and Garfunkel but instead pay tribute to the iconic sound that the duo are famous for by recreating the perfect harmonies, timing and diction that mesmerised a generation. Pastors Page Just One Minute… One day in July I was eating my lunch and the radio subjected me to 5 politicians each speaking for one minute explaining why the next Prime Minister should be the candidate they ZHUH VXSSRUWLQJ $OO ȴ YH ZHQW RYHU WKHLU time, or would have done had they not been stopped by the presenter. I found it an interesting challenge; to communicate what you feel passionately about in just one minute, or in 150 words of average speech. To give an idea of what that feels like; David Cameron’s resignation speech took 1,086 words, Nigel Farage’s 1,353 words but saying just 110 words will get you married. As a preacher, I speak for an average of 30 minutes each Sunday and I always sit down wishing I had said more about one point or another. Before you tell me 30 minutes is too long for a sermon (i.e. to talk about the most vital issues of life and death); think about how much time John Motson spends talking about football, Mark Kamode about ȴ OPV RU 5REHUW 3UHVWRQ DERXW WRGD\ȇV movement in the Stock Market. Then think about how long you spend talking about your car or last night’s soap opera. I would also refer you to St Paul who, on one occasion, spoke all night long only pausing ZKHQ D \RXQJ PDQ GR]HG R΍ DQG IHOO RXW RI the window. You see, I don’t speak for very long at all. 22 BAWTRY TODAY

Could you do it; explain what you’re passionate about and convince others to agree with you in just one minute/ 150 words? How would you get over your enthusiasm but also the reasoning why others should join you? Which of the many joys of your sport/hobby/political persuasion/ etc. would you include, and which would you exclude for lack of time? Would you seek in your minute to counter some of the arguments people put against your passion or just explain how it brings joy to your life? One minute isn’t very long at all. The Bible, as is often the case, is way ahead of us: although it is 727,969 words long, it is summed up in the 26 words of John 3:16; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” which only takes 1 seconds to say. My space is almost up, but let me tell you what I love about my hobby of collecting paper clips... (sorry, we’ve run out of room – ed.)

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake It was a lovely evening at the e library with many of the volunteers who had helped to make the Tour de Yorkshire such a success in Bawtry. We heard from Jo McQuade, DMBC’s Heritage Officer about a number of ways that Bawtry and Austerfield could get involved in Doncaster wide heritage events. We agreed that we would celebrate our rich heritage with a weekend of events to coincide with Mayflower 400. Our next meeting will be in July – please do contact me if you would like to be involved. Speeding This continues to be a problem throughout Bawtry and Austerfield. I am working with the Residents Group and Town Councillors to convince DMBC that we need to do more to reduce speeding; whether by traffic calming or reducing the current limits. It was good to see that the traffic calming on Station Road is working finally. In Austerfield DMBC have agreed to investigate the cost of extending the 30mph limits to take into account more of the village. In addition I have secured the support of South Yorkshire Police to do more speeding enforcement in the village. Consultation on dog fouling and controls Doncaster Council is starting a full consultation in relation to dog fouling and control across the borough. This will enable DMBC to create a more consistent approach across Doncaster and balance the needs of dog owners and other members of the community. There has been a public consultation established on the Doncaster Council Website, which everyone is encouraged to contribute to. http://www. doncaster.gov.uk/services/environmental/dogfouling-pick-up-or-pay-up 34 BAWTRY TODAY

Feedback Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ pspodonnydogs Grass cutting and encroachment I have reported a number of problems to DMBC’s Street Scene team including overhanging branches making it difficult to walk on the paths with pushchairs or wheelchairs as well as areas where the grass needs cutting. The backlog of work that I mentioned in my last update still continues but DMBC are recruiting new staff to add to the current workforce. A question I am often asked is why DMBC doesn’t collect the grass once it is cut as we do when we cut our own grass. The amount of grass that this would generate and the cost of getting rid of it would be extremely expensive; money that would have to be found from somewhere and at a time when DMBC is having to deal with unprecedented cuts in the funding that it receives. My August Surgeries Due to Austerfield Parish Council meeting not taking place in August, I will be available at the next Parish Council meeting in September. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the coffee morning at Bawtry Library as I usually do, but I will be there at 12.30 on 12 August. Please don’t wait to come to my surgery though, please contact me anytime – details below. Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @ CllrRachaelB: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster. gov.uk As always I am limited by space to include everything I am doing, so please contact me if you want any updates on anything I haven’t included or please do let me know about areas or issues that you feel need improving. Dear Friends, This is my last month for my stations at Auckley and Rossington. I am handing over pastoral oversight of the Methodist Churches in these two communities to my colleague, Mrs. Susanna Brookes. If you live in either of these communities then kindly contact her for any pastoral issues from 1st September 2016. Her telephone number is 01302532532 and e-mail address is susannabrookes@aol.com This does not mean that I will not be writing in your local magazine. However, for the other communities in Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough, and Tickhill, I am still with you for a few more years. Leaving a post as a Methodist Minister in a community always brings about a few tears. Yes, it is always sad to leave behind the wonderful bonds we create as we relate with people of GLÎ? HUHQW EDFNJURXQGV +RZHYHU VRPHWLPHV ZH also shed tears about some of our failures and regrets. Talking of failures and regrets brings us to mind the idea of guilt-feelings. I have met a few people in my Ministry who are always living with guilt. Some have even gone to the extent of being depressed about their guilt. In some cases, it may not be their faults but they still hang on to the guilt. They may be thinking, ‘if it had not been me, that would not have happened’. A few days before writing this piece, I was preparing my Sunday sermon on a Bible passage and I was reminded how important it is to deal with guilt. The Apostle Paul, writing to the believers in Rome, stated that: “There is no condemnation now for those who 42 BAWTRY TODAY

live in union with Christ Jesus.â€? (Romans 8: 1) The bible reminds us that all of us have sinned and hence, are under the judgement of God. This results in condemnation. However, Romans 8 reminds us that if we are in union with Christ Jesus, then there is no condemnation for us. To be in union with Jesus is to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, repent from your sins, and ask the Holy Spirit to come and live in you. Such confession brings forgiveness and wipes away any guilt. This kindness of God also makes you his child. 1 John 3: 1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!â€? Becoming a child of God gives you the boldness to approach God frequently and to talk to him in prayer. Since the presence of God through his Spirit is in you, you are connected to God himself – not only for a passing moment but eternally and intimately. It is therefore important to continue to connect with God by reading his word frequently and praying to him daily. These activities are some of the ways that will help you overcome any guilt feelings. %\ WKH ZD\ LI Ζ KDYH RÎ? HQGHG DQ\RQH LQ P\ conduct as a Minister, please do forgive me. I want to get rid of any guilt feelings that are in my way now. I wonder if you can do the same now. This month, as you continue to bask in the glorious warm weather, remember that God has sent his Son Jesus to help you overcome any feelings of guilt you have due to your past mistakes. It will be therefore be helpful if you connect with God through this Jesus. Have a blessed month.

Boss man Everyone at RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre are over the moon that Boss has Č´ QDOO\ IRXQG KLV IRUHYHU KRPH after a twelve-month wait. He was a big favourite among VWDÎ? DQG YROXQWHHUV DQG QR one could understand why adopters passed him by. He loves playing with a ball and you were lucky to get it back once he caught it, so he was named ‘Boss man’. Boss is a Presa Canaria – a big lad – and he adores walks and playing in our paddock. He’s young at heart and you’d never guess he was 7 years old. Boss

loves to please and will do just about anything for the reward of a treat or a toy. Another interesting fact – Boss is well travelled and understands Spanish commands! The RSPCA Centre on the Great North Road, Bawtry DN10 6DE is open six days a week 11am4pm, closed Wednesdays. The team is always patient and never gives up on any of the rescue animals. Boss arrived on 15 July last year and was adopted on 15 July this year. 6HHLQJ KLP VHWWLQJ RÎ? ZLWK KLV new owner to his forever home makes all the hard work

Corporal Storey would also attend on weekends when we opened the squadron for projects, as he loved modelling, this involved recreating iconic air craft to display in the squadron. Dominic is now ready to enter a hugely exciting part of his life as he begins his career in the RAF, he told us “ I go on the 12th July to RAF Halton for basic training and after that I’m going to RAF Cosford to train as an aircraft maintenance mechanic.â€? Asked whether he was scared, nervous or excited he answered “ I don’t know really, a bit of everything “.
