Welcome to

the February 2016 edition

Love is deaf. You can’t just tell someone you love them. You have to show it. - UNKNOWN With Valentine’s day approaching it got me thinking about love and what it actually means. Not just in the context of partnerships but also with the people around us; our children, our friends and our community. It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s the thoughts and efforts that go a long way. Random acts of kindness, however small, have the power to at the very least put a small smile on someone’s face. In the US they will be celebrating Random Acts of Kindness day on 17th February, but maybe this is something better carried out every day, whenever the opportunity arises? If everyone was kind to the people around them what a different world we would live in. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February perhaps you could have a go at extending some love.

Late 2015 brought the news that the Tour De Yorkshire would be winging its way through this area on Saturday 30th April. This could be a huge opportunity for our local communities, drawing people from other parts of the area and much farther afield to watch the race. If you are planning activities on that day do please keep me in touch so that we can include a full list of local events in the March and April issues and ensure everyone knows where the action is taking place! The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th February.

Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.

Best wishes, Paula x paula@todaypublications.co.uk | t: 01302 969696

community 2008 (BAWTRY) SQUADRON Well 2015 was a busy year for our Bawtry Air Cadets. They paraded, marched, climbed, swam, abseiled and flown through 2015 and they have become better Cadets for it. Their experiences will be great memories for them in the future. Some of our Cadets have been lucky enough to travel abroad on International Camps and experience something very special. Other cadets have also had unique experiences such as meeting and having a very close encounter with the fabulous Red Arrows, abseiling down the side of cliffs in the Lake District, sailing in Scotland or learning all about the intricate workings of the wonderful Avro Vulcan. With the help of one of our staff CI Victoria Aldridge, we chose to donate Christmas items for the homeless and also children from poverty stricken families. With the help of ST Oswald’s Primary in Finningley, we collected many items that our Cadets then used to create giftboxes, these were delivered to Hallam FM to use in their Mission For Christmas appeal. Items collected for the homeless such as food, toiletries and warm clothing were being stored in CI Aldridge’s vehicle over night. Sadly her van was broken into and many items were taken including all the food and toiletries. Once reported to the local area on Facebook and the Doncaster Free Press

more donations poured in and the items were replaced 10 times over and the huge delivery took place a few days before Christmas and their reaction was over whelming. CI Aldridge would like to thank the Air Cadets, the children of St Oswald’s as well as the surrounding community for all their donations and support. To end the year the cadets were treated to a night of bowling and also some fun and laughter at the annual Christmas party. And so now we look forward to events of 2016 and the extra special 60th Anniversary of 2008 Bawtry Squadron as well as the 75th year of the Air Cadet Corps. T

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

Does this sound familiar? “ We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children” These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills. Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Also available: APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

Do you qualify?

Arts Review

& what’s going on - FEBRUARY 2016 HILARY

Art History Lecture: Friday February 12th: Cubism An exploration of perhaps the most significant movement in the history of art, when, taking a lead from the works of Paul Cezanne, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso redefined the way that artists depict the world. Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture costs £5 to be paid at the museum reception and includes refreshments. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day and prepare to be educated and inspired.

MARTIN PARR This appears to be photography month with a number of interesting shows spanning a wide range of time to go and see. The Hepworth Wakefield 4 Feb - 12 June MARTIN PARR ‘The Rhubarb Triangle & Other Stories’ a major exhibition by British photographer Martin Parr. The largest Martin Parr exhibition in the UK since his Barbican retrospective in 2002, comprising more than 300 photographs that span the past 40 years. A new commission lies at the heart of the exhibition and consists of a series of photographs taken over the last 12 months in an area of countryside known as ‘The Rhubarb Triangle’ between Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell in West Yorkshire, which is famous for producing early-forced rhubarb FREE ENTRY If you know Martin Parr’s work you will be as chuffed as I am that we have his photographs on display at such close range. He has a wonderful eye and captures the ordinary folk of Britain with a kind but wicked wit. He is an inspirational picture maker and this show will be well worth the trek to Wakefield to see. Don’t miss it! www.hepworthwakefield.org Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: 16 January – 9 April John Sparkes: a major retrospective by Doncaster born artist of paintings and drawings made over 45 years. community Hello everyone, it is snowing as I am writing this so I am hoping everyone is warm and safe. The weather is really cold at the moment but luckily all our dogs and cats are kept warm in their houses and cat pens. All our new kennel block is now up and running and we are so proud of our new buildings. A big thank you to Adoption for Pets who funded this project for us. We have an appeal on Face Book at the moment for a little cross breed puppy called Tim he was a litter of 7 and it transpired that he has a heart condition. The little chap will struggle to reach maturity without this operation. After a specialist vets appointment that cost £800 we decided to go ahead with the operation, however the operation will be £2000 which we know is a lot of money but we think this pup with a steely character deserves a chance. So we are now asking for donations to get this little pup back on track and give him a bright future. If you would like to make any small or large donation please either call us or take a look at our Face Book page.

Finding a forever home

arrange this for you at our Sanctuary, we charge £12.00 for this service. We have recently reunited a cat with its owner after going missing for quite some time; this was in fact because it was Micro chipped. So the process does work. We are arranging a fundraising evening at The Ship at Newington it will be a Race Night on the 25th Feb first race to start at 7.30. The tickets are £5 and pie and peas will be included. Tickets available from the venue and the Sanctuary or you could just pay on the door. However it would make life easier if they knew how many people would want pie and peas. Please support us it will be a fun evening and you may make your fortune. Look forward to seeing you there. We will also be arranging a Body Shop party in our reception area in March and I will let you know all about that in the next issue so watch this space!

At the moment we have 50 dogs in our Sanctuary, lots of cross breeds and even pedigrees. They are with us for various reasons, but they all need that special someone to make them part of a loving family life. We had lots of dogs abandoned over the New Year period. There were at least 6 dogs tied to our gate at the bottom of the lane during this period. All with no history at all. However better tied to our gates than let out on a motorway as one little dog was. A kind motorist stopped on the A1 as he had seen a dog running and causing serious havoc. He did manage to catch it and put it in his cab. We were called and came to the rescue of this lucky little dog. He was only with us a couple of weeks before a lovely family adopted him. Micro chipping is law from this April, so if you do have a dog you will need to arrange for this to be done. Apart from anything else if you do become parted from your beloved pet you will be able to be reunited quickly. It is a very quick procedure and we can

Last but not least, we have amazing news. Pipers Garage in Tickhill have donated a van to us that they have also paid to have sign written. We were absolutely desperate for a new van, without transport we cannot function. They came to our rescue and a very BIG thank you from us all. Please come and see us, whether it’s to take a look at our Shop Pet area that we have in reception or to look for a pet that will share your life. Maybe you would like to drop off old towels, blankets, black bin bags, wash powder, washing up liquid or long lasting treats. All of these will make life so much easier for the Sanctuary. Items like this still need to come out of our funds.

Harworth Colliery Football Club February 2016 Update Hello and Welcome to this months update and the first one for us in 2016 so Happy New year to you all. Its been as ever a very busy few months for the club both on and off the Football field where good progress is being made in both.

The Football Club with the support of the Sports and Social Club (Pavilion) are delighted to announce Jones and Co Solicitors as new sponsors of the Ground. This agreement for the pitches used by the Football Club to now be named The Jones and Co Recreational Ground will be for the next 4 years and we hope that it will continue long after that. Jones and Co have branches in nearby Bawtry, Retford and Ollerton and have supported local Sports clubs for some time, so for us to be associated with them is one we are all proud of, the new signage looks great also as the Pics show.

We are also delighted that other local businesses continue to back the Club, this support we receive is vital for us to have a solid platform to progress and I would like to think that anyone who follows the club or is associated with us in any way can see what we are trying to do, the picture shows SWEDEX another local business with employer and Colliery supporter Chaz Davies and his son with two of the 1st team. SWEDEX have sponsored a board as well as two players so again thank you. The solid platform I have talked about has allowed us to apply for promotion to the FA to go up into the Northern Counties East League, an ambition of the clubs since we 12

Harworth Today

have been involved and a league the club hasn’t been in since the late 80’s, we do obviously have work left to do to meet the criteria which we are confident of doing. One other update we are thrilled to announce is the one that the Robert Needham Memorial Stand has been ordered and will be delivered at the beginning of March, the down payment (50%) a little over £5.5k came from the Sponsored Memorial walk and the recent Xmas Raffle £1240, so in essence it is all of you that have given so generously that has helped pay for this. We do have two further payments to make one on arrival and one two months after, we are working hard to fund this and we will be having a Memorial Concert at the Welfare Hall on Good Friday with the Wilson Ellis Band and Special guests. Further info and tickets will be released on this in due course. Exciting times indeed but we are still actively trying to get more people interested in joining the club, whether that be coach, Volunteer, committee member, sponsor, in all aspects we need more people involved, progress means time and effort and what we do with the people we have we should all be proud of but to take things further we need more assitance. When I read on social media sites about parents having to take their children to other clubs out of the area at a cost I might add, it guts me and everyone else at the club. The resources are there if people want to get involved. This time last Year Adam King enquired about running an Under 8’s, he has since been put through his Level1 coaching and the team is up and running and enjoying playing in the Doncaster league with the help of Shaun Kingston. NOT ALL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS PHYSICAL THE EMOTIONAL INJURIES CAN BE JUST AS DAMAGING It is a sad fact that many people, both men and women are the victims of domestic abuse from a partner who is never physically violent to them. This abuse takes the sinister form of controlling, often verbally abusive behaviour which completely undermines the other person’s self -confidence, making them feel stupid and worthless and constantly afraid to do or say anything

Please Contact

which might upset their partner. Very often abusers work hard to isolate their victim from family or other people who could support them. Fans of the long running radio series “The Archers” will know that pregnant Helen Tichener is being controlled and abused emotionally by her husband Rob, who is steadily cutting her off from her family and old friends. The good news is that the Family Courts now recognise this type of abuse for what it is and can act to protect victims and their children by means of a Non-Molestation order or, if necessary, an Occupation Order requiring the abuser to move out of the family home. Legal Aid is still available for this type of case, subject to financial assessment, and once the court makes an order against an abusive partner, it is possible to apply for legal aid to deal with divorce and finances too.

The first meeting of the new year took place on 5 January 2016, and was well attended. Members received details of a Pay As You Go Home Contents Insurance scheme, which is being administered by A1 Housing. This is for A1 Housing tenants only, and is well worth a look. The ladies of the TRA were praised for the sterling work done in providing refreshments for members of the public following the Dedication of the Miners’ Memorial, and Opening of the Memorial Garden on Sunday 13 December. This event had been well attended in spite of the dreary wet weather. Discussions took place about planned events for 2016, and the Christmas lunch at Styrrup Hall Golf Club has already been booked, as has the pantomime in Retford. Under discussion were a river cruise on the Trent, with a meal included, Manchester Christmas markets, Yorkshire Wildlife Park for an Easter Egg Hunt, summer day trip to Skegness, and the possibility of a Strawberry Fayre. A representative from Notts County Council talked to the group about devolution, which is the transfer of power to the regions, giving local councils the opportunity to control how money raised locally is spent, rather than it going to Whitehall for reinvestment nationally. Bassetlaw is an overlap district between North Midlands: Derbyshire Nottinghamshire, and also the Sheffield City Region. Our District Council is involved in a consultation process. We also learned that Sherwood Forest is to get a new Visitor Centre, although there is some controversy regarding the siting of this, close to the existing cricket club. Comments are welcome during a consultation exercise. Also Notts County Council, in line with everyone else, is having to make cuts, and again, there is a consultation process, and members were encouraged to go online to air their views. There has been some criticism on Facebook of the Tenants & Residents Association, particularly people saying that they have never heard of us, and we must be a closed group. This is not true, and as the name implies, it is open to any tenants or residents of Harworth and Bircotes. Simply come along to our next meeting, to be held on 3 February, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre, starting at 10.30 am. You can be sure of a warm welcome. A raffle is usually run, and refreshments are provided. If you have a grievance you would like help with, come along and we will try our best to help. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Dear Friends,

The New You

I am writing this article in mid-January so I’m still thinking about things we have resolved to do to make us ‘new’ or ‘fresh’ in the year 2016.

suggest to you that spending time by meditating on the Holy Scriptures and praying to God will help you to think about your behaviour or thoughts.

Some of us are still evaluating our past and wondering what we can do to achieve the best for this year. Others are thinking of how best we can do things differently in order to maintain the best we have achieved so far.

These will help you to consider what you do or say and change the direction of your life in a positive way this year.

Some facts come to my mind and they are based on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans in the bible. Chapter 12 versus 1 and 2 from ‘The Message’ translation state, “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life - your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life - and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you”. The Apostle encourages us first to be ‘original’ as we engage with our culture. We are not to copy what we do not understand. Or, we are not to think that because every person is doing it or says so it is the right thing for us to do. Rather, it is best to ask God to help us in our decision-making. As God reveals to us his plans, do have the will to adjust in order to free our minds of any difficult issues. He can reveal his plans through the good books we read, the good conversations we have with other people, the programmes we watch or listen to, and so on. We all need a bit of transformation and God does it best for us. He will help us to change by the way we think. In addition, as a Christian, I wonder if I can 16

The following prayer was helpful to me a few days ago and I wonder if you can own it and use it as often times as possible. God, I praise you with all that I am, knowing that my strength comes from joy in you now and always. I praise you for your mercy, for forgiving my sins. Remind me that mercy always triumphs over judgment and that only you, the God of all grace, will restore me and make me strong. Renew my heart and let your gentle Spirit lead me down the right path. Please grant me peace in my heart. May my burdens lead me to rest in you as I grow closer to you each day. Let me fill my mind with truth, righteousness, beauty and all things worthy of praise. Thank you God for your promise to watch over me always and to hold me up with your victorious right hand. Thank you God for giving me a hope and a future. Let me take every action in the coming year fixing my eyes on Jesus. Amen. (Written by Melody; http://www. dayspring.com/articles/a-new-years-prayer) Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day? Want a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than cut flowers, and many gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and airmiles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a good option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. 22

Harworth Today

Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. Most florists will stock a range of flowering plants so you won’t need to head off your high street to find something suitable. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentallyfriendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 969696

As previously reported the practice was inspected by the Care Quality Commission in October 2015. Published in Mid-December the report was published after the deadline for us to make comment in the January article. The report is broken down into 5 areas and the report states the practice is GOOD in three of those areas. These are:Are services effective? Are services caring? Are services responsive to people’s needs?

The Practice Manager in conjunction with NHS England has issued the following statement. “During a routine inspection by the Care Quality Commission it was found that the practice did not meet in full all of the criteria required, resulting in the practice being given a rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ We can confirm that there are no immediate concerns with regard to patient safety at the surgery and patients should visit the practice as normal. We are working with our partner NHS organisations to ensure that we are fully compliant and we expect to have met the Care Quality Commission’s recommendations by 31st May 2016. We apologise for any worry or distress this news may cause, and confirm that we are fully committed to providing GP services, which are of the highest possible standards for patients.”

News from Recent Arrests/ Court

Spaven was arrested a short time after the collision at the Rotherham gym where he worked.

Male Sentenced to 24 years for Murder A cyclist was killed by his childhood friend when he was struck by a car in a premeditated attack.

Det Ch Insp Hayley Williams said: “This was a pre-mediated and callous attack on a man who had absolutely no opportunity to defend himself.”

In December 2015 Sam Spaven 27, of Bircotes was sentenced to 24 years and 194 days in prison after he admitted to the murder of Richard Pencott, 44 of Balmoral Court, Bircotes.

“Spaven got behind the wheel with the full intention of using his car as a murderous weapon. He drove straight at Mr Pencott, giving him no chance to avoid the collision. Spaven then compounded this terrible act by refusing to stop at the scene, speeding off and leaving Mr Pencott to die by the side of the road.”

On 24th June 2015 Mr Pencott was cycling home from work on the footpath running alongside the A631, Blyth Road, Harworth, Nottinghamshire, when he was struck head-on by an Audi A4 driven by Spaven. The force of the impact was such that it launched Mr Pencott’s bike into the air, clearing a nearby 10ft-high security fence. Spaven failed to stop at the scene and left Mr Pencott to die from his injuries which included a fractured skull, chest injuries and numerous broken bones. Spaven’s heavily damaged car with smashed windowscreen was seen by numerous passing motorists as he fled the scene, stopping when he arrived at his place of work, a gym in Rotherham. The court heard how Spaven had made threats to kill Mr Pencott leading up to the murder after learning he was in a relationship with Spaven’s former partner. Spaven had taken to facebook prior to the collision to say Mr Pencott had “broken his family apart”. Less than an hour before his attack, Spaven visited his former partner and threatened violence against both before saying: “I’ve sorted something this morning, don’t worry…let’s see what happens when I drive past him.” The court heard Spaven knew that Mr Pencott always finished work at 2pm before cycling home along the A631.

“his violent actions that summer’s day have destroyed a number of lives and left behind nothing but devastation.”

Male and Female Prolific Shoplifters receive prison sentence. A Male and Female prolific shoplifters from the Rossington, South Yorkshire area were recently charged with a Shop Theft of approximately £200 of meat at the Aldi store in Harworth along with several other shop thefts in the Doncaster area. They both attended Doncaster Magistrates court on 23rd December 2015 where they both pleaded guilty and received 16 weeks prison sentence each.

Diesel Thefts 2 Males from the Harworth & Bircotes area have been charged with diesel thefts from the East Bassetlaw area and are due to

appear at Mansfield Magistrates court at the end of December.

Cannabis Grow Found in property Harworth & Bircotes. Following a visit by officers to a property in Harworth a cannabis grow was found in a garage at a property. A Female was subsequently interviewed in relation to the cannabis grow where enquiries are ongoing.

Juveniles prosecuted for Possession of Air weapons. 2 Juveniles from the Harworth and Bircotes area have been prosecuted for possession of an unloaded/loaded air weapon in a public place where they were found in possession of an airweapon in the Bircotes area. Both Juveniles are due to appear at Mansfield Youth Court in due course.

Male charged with Breach of Injunction A Male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has been charged with a breach of an Anti Social Behaviour Injunction where he was remanded to appear at county court.

Anti-Social Behaviour : The Harworth Neighbourhood policing Team are continually gathering evidence in relation to tenancy issues in the area and are working closely with social landlords A1 housing and Notts Community Housing Association along with private landlords to support evictions. Throughout 2015 Nottinghamshire Police have assisted other agencies in several evictions taken place within the Harworth and Bircotes area. I would like this opportunity to remind home owners and tenants that any property identified causing issues of anti-social behaviour on a regular basis will have the tenancy looked at with support of landlords, and if the evidence supports seek evictions.

community Quad Bikes Off road bikes seized in the area We continue to receive an increase of incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. However Nottinghamshire Police as reported above have had some recent success in seizing off road quad bikes and arresting/prosecuting offenders. Over the past 2 months Nottinghamshire Police, have seized a further 4 off road bikes 2 quad bikes and a 4x4 vehicle that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area, and also nearby villages in the East Bassetlaw area. These vehicles were seized after they were identified involved in crime, illegal road use, driving on land and involved in poaching.

See it? Report it? Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property.

Darker Nights Consider leaving a light on indoors or putting your lights on a timer if you are going to be away from your property for the evening/overnight. Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen.

Speed Detection Operations The Neighbourhood Policing Team have continued to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area, where the team have carried out active speed detection dates with the local schools in November 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and December 2015 approximately 2,700 vehicles have been monitored with around 17 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.7% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area. Some motorists have also attended the All Saints school where the pupils have carried out a speed awareness presentation and completed survey questions with the motorists to educate them on the dangers of speeding. The feedback from the pupils and motorists has been very positive in relation to these classroom presentations which focus on education and awareness of speed rather than prosecution.

PRIORITY SETTING MEETING (What was the Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting) From the Priority Setting Meeting held on January 6th 2016 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :Priority 1 : Anti Social Behaviour Priority 2 : Environmental Issues Priority 3 : Speeding/Road Safety The Next Priority Setting Meeting will be held on the 6th April 2016 at 2pm at the Harworth Town Hall.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JANUARY 2016 DEDICATION CEREMONY I was moved by the ceremony performed by the Bishop of Southwell, and didn’t he look grand in his red robe and carrying his big crook! Local schoolchildren Kelsey Cowen and Leo Barker placed a pit helmet and a lit miner’s lamp on the plinth, and I was so relieved the scissors worked when Leah Probert cut the ribbon to open the memorial garden. The unveiling of the headstone, the reading of the names on the memorial and the laying of the wreaths were particularly poignant moments, and as ever our vicar, Leah, successfully led and coordinated the event. …Citizen of the Year has to be Dave Lewis, who has worked on the garden for many weeks and helped manage and bring together the whole concept. There are far too many local people to thank individually, but I know how many contributed in their own way to ensuring the success of the garden and the ceremony, along with providing the refreshments in the Town Hall, and then the evening entertainment …and the Concert was a resounding success. The Town Hall was full, and I noticed the audience swaying in time to the music, singing along, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was All Saints Church congregation who agreed to Harworth Brass Band changing the original venue to the Town Hall, and I am so grateful they did…the concert was a fitting end to a unique occasion, it brought a sense of completion to a very special day. ….What impressed most was the local people who attended; there was unity and a shared feeling of empathy, belonging and understanding, and after the ceremony I noticed how people socialised, talked and swapped memories. The event was recognised as important by all who attended, and I believe they found it most fitting to the memory of the men who died at Harworth Colliery. A QUIET TIME OF YEAR Traditionally, Christmas and New Year are quiet times for councils. Boxing Day morning saw me sat at my computer drafting the outline

skeleton of what will become my Budget speech, to be delivered to my District Councillor colleagues in March. I do my best to make a shedload of numerical data as interesting as I can, and it doesn’t help when the news about funds from central government means the Bassetlaw District Council budget will be reduced yet again. …but not too quiet for the thief who jemmied the lock to the allotments. Was he hoping to raid the only shed on the site, or was he desperate for a few Brussel sprouts? THE REVEREND MICHAEL ‘MICK THE VIC’ BRIGGS Many people will remember this popular vicar who became a wellloved member of our community, so it is with sadness that I have to report that Michael died on Christmas Day. Our thoughts are with his wife and family. VISITING THE ELDERLY I was recently asked if Council would employ someone ‘to visit and check on elderly people’, the idea being to help out if they had a problem. Commendable as this sounds, in the world of Councils this responsibility falls firmly under County Council Social Services, who have the means and authority to recruit, train, employ and pay staff, AND carry out the required police checks, hold the necessary insurance and, when a problem presents, carry out an investigation. A voluntary group could provide simple social input, help out with shopping, offer a contact point etc. BUT get advice first from a recognised organisation such as Age Concern… remember, family members need to

know who you are, and a confused person who has mislaid a watch or wallet might misguidedly blame a visitor for their loss. THE TOUR DE HARWORTH (AND YORKSHIRE!) SATURDAY 30TH APRIL Although the Tour has 3 stages, we are concerned with Stage 2, starting in Otley and finishing in Doncaster: the Harworth and Bircotes section is referred to by the organisers as ‘The Stage of Champions’, in honour of Tommy Simpson. The race travels via Tickhill to Tickhill Spital, into Harworth and along the length of Scrooby Road and down Wright’s Hill, turning left into Bawtry. It then goes to Austerfield and Finningley, joining the A638 at the Mount Pleasant junction, and on towards the finish line in Bennetthorpe, Doncaster. (Details of times will be available end of March) What will this mean for local residents? Firstly, your usual Saturday routine may be disturbed. We will see both the men and women’s races on this day, and for each the roads will be closed for around 1 hour as the cavalcade rolls along. There will be Police motorcycles travelling with the cyclists, crowd control/health and safety measures will be in place, and an international media presence can be expected. Secondly, local people and businesses are encouraged to think about what they want to do to support the race, which itself generates money for named charities. H&B Town Council will make sure the town looks attractive, and we will also be thinking ‘what else’ we can do, possibly focussing on the link to Tommy

Simpson. I know schools, churches and other organisations tend to get involved, too, and a large number of spectators must present an opportunity to some of our shops, so a group of Neighbourhood Champions planning for the event would be ideal. Thirdly, if you want to know more, look on the website: letour.yorkshire.com. I understand there may be opportunities for volunteers to become ‘Tour Makers’ – find out more from the website BLOOD DONOR SESSION: 1ST APRIL AT THE TOWN HALL If you fancy a lie down, followed by a cuppa and a biscuit, you might want to come to the next session for blood donors on 1st April - it’s not possible for the team to have too many donors. I was a donor until placed on medication and hence no longer met the criteria, but at least I know my blood group – just in case! A NEW TOWN COUNCILLOR: we welcome Stephanie Robinson, a Bircotes resident with past experience of working with communities, plus event organisation, which I am sure will prove to be very useful. TO MAKE YOU SMILE One morning just before Christmas, an irate lady rang the Town Hall. Lady: “I’m at the cemetery and the gates are locked, it’s disgusting” Clerk: “which cemetery are you at?” Lady: “the new cemetery, and I can’t get in” Clerk: “where are you standing?” Lady: “outside the gates and they’re locked” Clerk: “move onto the footpath and open the pedestrian gate” Lady: “oh!” The ‘phone then went dead. The gate is usually closed but not locked. I have some sympathy with this particular resident, who was probably very busy in the lead-up to Christmas and also, I suspect, dealing with a recent bereavement. We have all done something similar which left us feeling a little embarrassed – have you ever tried to pull open a door when the sign says push? - I believe it is called ‘being human’.

OLDCOTES VILLAGE HALL

Tickhill and d District Lions

With the New Year we are pleased to welcome a new class with Brett Garrett. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) will help to shed body fat and build muscle mass. The design of interval training burns calories for 24 hours.

Our January report was written to meet magazine deadlines inn early December when Santa’s sleigh runs had hardly started. Looking back we are happy that with the responsible and cheerful help of Scout Explorers and their leaders and a number of ‘Friends of Lions’ we were able to let as many people as possible know that Santa was on his way if they had not already heard him in the distance.

Classes will be every Monday and Friday from 7am – 7.30am If required you can stay for a further 30 minute session. There will also be a similar class on a Wednesday from 4pm – 5pm. Free nutritional advice is given, along with free body composition tests. Sessions are just £1.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us, especially those on the Clay Flat Lane area route on Saturday 12th December when it poured with rain. Many thanks also to Trevor Reeve and the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Jeep Grand Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh around in fine style.

Monday

With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. On Friday 5th February President Steve Radford and Lion Bryan Winslow will be joining Michelle, the landlady of the Oak, and eighteen others attempting to walk on hot coals to raise Sponsorship in aid of Little Heroes Cancer Trust. Look out for sponsorship forms, there is bound to be one in The Oak, or turn up for a beer on the night and see who gets blisters! Date for your diaries. On Friday 24th June we are holding our second ‘Summer Bash’ in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers and Lions supporters not to miss. We can be contacted through the following:Email : contact@tickhill-lions.com Phone : 0844 963 2462 Our Website : www.tickhill-lions.com Our Facebook : facebook.com/tickhill.lions
