Welcome to

the March 2016 edition There is a reason why some people think they can do anything…

They listened to their mothers With Mother’s Day approaching I looked for a Mum themed quotation this month! Part of the job of being a Mum is to encourage our children to reach for the stars, to support them in all their endeavours whether that be their first steps, riding a bike, taking up a new hobby, or any of the other new experiences and milestones along the way to adulthood and beyond. It doesn’t get any easier I am discovering, as the concerns we have when they are little, develop into new worries as the reach the next stage in their development. My youngest becomes a teenager on Mother’s Day this year and we become a three teen household! Such fun! The last time her birthday fell on Mother’s Day was 11 years ago and on that day her 2nd birthday coincided with the distribution of the first issues of Tickhill Today – so we are also celebrating the 11th birthday of Today Publications this month.

For excellent coffee, homemade cakes & scones, plus a selection of hot & cold sandwiches, savouries & light meals to eat in or takeaway. Afternoon Tea available from 1st March (must be booked in advance)

As Mother’s Day approaches please give a thought for all Mums at whatever stage of motherhood they may be, and don’t forget those around you who no longer have their Mums to treat this Mother’s Day. Don’t forget that if you are planning activities on the Tour De Yorkshire Day on 30th April do let me know so that we can include a full list of local events in the next issues and ensure everyone knows where the action is taking place! The April issue will be delivered to you late March, over the Easter weekend. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th March. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

2008 (BAWTRY) SQUADRON 2008 Bawtry Air Cadets are a proud and distinguished Squadron with so much history within the town of Bawtry. This year we celebrate 60 years of being established in Bawtry but our history can place us in nearby Harworth & Bircotes the same year the Air Cadets was formed. Bawtry Squadron was later formed in 1956 and stationed at Bawtry Hall which if you know your history was the location of No1 Bomber command during the WWII and the Lancaster Bomber, also in later years for the Cold War and also the Falklands War with the Vulcan. So as you see a very privileged Military history.

SO NOW AS PART OF OUR 60TH ANNIVERSARY WE ARE LOOKING FOR EX-CADETS OR EX-OFFICERS AND CI’S TO GET IN CONTACT AS WE HOPE TO HAVE A CELEBRATION IN SEPTEMBER Please contact the Squadron/Facebook or CI Victoria Aldridge (victoria_aldridge@hotmail.com) As for our Cadets they too have been celebrated with a wonderful Dining In Night at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry. Awards were given to some of our hard working Cadets and our staff were recognised for their achievements behind the scenes. After the wonderful meal, the Cadets let off some steam by hitting the dance floor till past midnight. A good time was had by all and a Thank You to the Crown Hotel for putting on a great night. On Sunday 7th of February the centre of Doncaster came to a stand still as over a thousand Air Cadets, Officers and staff paraded through the streets from Cast to Mansion House and on to St George’s Minster to celebrate 75 Years of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. The Air Cadets also repeated their Promise of allegiance together, which in total was around 800 serving Air Cadets. A very Impressive and an emotional moment for all involved. T

Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston – Firbeck Village Hall I don’t know about you, Dear Reader, but when winter descends, I feel like hibernating, it’s too much effort to go out, and it’s just so easy to collapse onto the sofa and do the knitting, … but Spring is on its way and eventually there comes a time when you need to wake up and greet the world, to take part and to enjoy yourself. There is so much going on out there, why miss out on it? I’d bought tickets for King Charles III which was touring to the Lyceum the first week of Feb. Even though the tickets were a fortune, the evening was so appalling weather –wise that I suggested that we forgot it…but we didn’t, we got out the galoshes and sou’westers and headed out, and the play was terrific. I knew it had won a slew of awards when in London, but didn’t know what to expect. It was written in Shakespearian Old English, so this piece of work, set in the near future appeared like a history –play, and it referenced so much – snatches from Richard II, Henry V, Macbeth (the set could have come straight from that one) and even Jarvis Cocker. If you missed that, you missed a treat. So what is there his month? Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: until 9 April John Sprakes: a major retrospective by Doncaster born artist of paintings and drawings made over 45 years. From his early topographical works, through iconic images like ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ and ‘Rain, Steam and Speed’, to the semi- abstract works he created towards the end of his life. Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30 am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture costs £5, includes refreshments. Harworth Colliery Football Club March 2016 Update Hello and welcome to this months update from Harworth Colliery, February has been an eventful month indeed! Firstly I need to report on Dave Guy’s Under 14’s as they was crowned Champions of The Doncaster and District Division one League on the 14th of Feb. This was after they won their 16th game out of 16, an incredible record and with two games remaining can they perform perfection? We will see but the fact that they were promoted last Season to a higher league and then winning this is a great acheivement and on behalf of the club I would like to thank all involved from parents supporters, the coaches and of course the players, well done lads.

The club though are delighted to advise that both the 1st team and the Reserves won the Molten Fair Play award for November through to January, its always nice to see good discipline rewarded but for both teams to get it is an acheivement, so big pat on the back to the players, Coaches and all concerned as it’s a Club award. See the pics from the 1st team with Manager Brendan Wilson and Captain James Woodward and reserves with Coaches Nick Burton, Kev Summerhill and U19’s Captain Marley Alder.

Staying with the Juniors and the Under 15’s are also doing well and at the time of writing are top of their division so well done all of you. One negative was the bad injury Jamie Ellis suffered during Feb so we wish him a speedy recovery. Lets hope for a U14/15 double this season after the 15’s just missed out last season. Adam King and Shaun Kingston also doing great work with the Under 8’s, we hope that we will have a new team for next season but will advise further on this. We also have enough players for an Under 12’s who train on the Astro every Tuesday at 5. We are still looking for a Manager for this team to take it forward next season, so if anyone is interested or a parent of that age group is then please get in touch. We would assist with any courses/safeguarding required, in fact the kit is even bought and paid for we just need someone to step forward. We really need people to step up and grab the nettle, every month I write about this and the fact we have the players but the phone doesn’t ring, we are serious about progressing our Junior section but without the volunteers getting in touch it will just be words not actions. Onto the Seniors and the 1st team sit joint top on goal difference, up until the defeat against Askern on the 14th we were on a great run but must pick ourselves up now and push on.

Tickhill and District Lions The History Lions Clubs began in 1917 as the dream of a Chicago businessman who believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons to include the betterment of their communities and the world at large. This belief became a driving principle and it was decided that no Lions Club should exist for the financial benefit of its members. Lions Clubs became ‘International’ with the first Canadian Club in 1920. During the Second World War members of Canadian Lions Clubs, visiting London as servicemen, were appalled by the way the children of the blitz had to live and decided they wanted to help. Queen Elizabeth was so impressed by their actions that after the war she sent Lord Leconfield to Canada to thank the Lions and shortly after his return the first Lions Clubs started to spread throughout the UK. There are now over 900 Clubs in the UK and Ireland, over 46,000 around the world in 208 countries and more than 1.3 million Lions, all dedicated to making a difference. Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation in the world and also one of the most effective. Each one of its members pays their own dues which collectively cover all of our insurance and administration costs. This means that all of the money raised by our Club can be distributed in full without any deductions. Message in a bottle. The emergency services are all aware of the Lions ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme. The small plastic bottles contain basic personal and medical records and are kept where they can be easily found in an emergency - in the fridge! The bottles are available free of charge. Lions Clubs have distributed over 5 million bottles to people with conditions such as diabetes, allergies, disabilities and life threatening illnesses - however, the scheme is extremely beneficial for all no matter how serious or minor their illness. WHY WHY WHY Why do some people in Harworth and Bircotes think it is alright to just dump anything they no longer need or want, such as a wooden rocking horse, cycle helmet, soft toys, in a ditch. Why not take these things to a Charity Shop, where they can be put to good use, and raise money for a worthy cause. There are also an increasing amount of white goods, i.e. fridges, microwaves etc. If you can put it in a vehicle to dump it, why can you not take it to the tip to dispose of it. There is no magic fairy coming to take it away. The council will eventually have to come along, which means the rest of us are paying, through our council tax, to have your rubbish carted away. Doesn’t seem fair, does it? Your rubbish, your responsibility, not everyone else’s. If people reported those doing it, they would be fined, and thus there would be more money for more important things the council need to do.

Be Sure of a Warm Welcome!

The meeting of the Tenants and Residents Group was held on Tuesday 3 February 2016. The police were present and gave an update on crime figures in the area. A copy of the police report will be published elsewhere in this magazine. The long awaited CCTV is due to go in within the next few weeks, and some members felt that this should warrant a celebration with photographs and champagne! A presentation was given by a Town Councillor, who had attended a meeting with the South Yorkshire organisers of the forthcoming Tour de Yorkshire. This was regarding the planned detour through Harworth/Bircotes, due to the connection with Tommy Simpson. The event will be well covered by the media, and particularly Sky TV, who will broadcast live to 210 countries worldwide. This is a wonderful opportunity for our town to benefit from the publicity that will ensue from this event. It will take place on Saturday 30 April, which is a bank holiday weekend. There will be some disruption to traffic, but not too much. The ladies’ race is likely to come through between 12.30 and 1.30pm, and the men’s race will come through between 4.30 and 5.30pm. There will also be the usual cavalcade of outriders and other vehicles which are part of the event. Efforts are being made to bring on board local businesses, schools, and other organisations, to ensure that we get maximum benefit from having this prestigious event here in Harworth/Bircotes. It would be good to see the yellow bikes that we all saw on television during last year’s Tour de Yorkshire. On the back of this there is also a Yorkshire Bank initiative, which involves groups setting up a “Bike Library”. This would enable poorer families, who may be unable to afford bikes, to borrow bikes and go out riding as a family, with its obvious health benefits. Bikes would be donated by others who have outgrown the bikes or otherwise have no further use for them. Further information can be obtained by going online to www.bikelibraries.co.uk, and for the actual event go to www.letouryorkshire.com. Anyone interested in getting involved with the preparation for the event, or in setting up the bike library should ask for details at the Town Hall initially. The next meeting of the Group will take place on Tuesday 1 March, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre, starting at 10.30 am. Refreshments are served, and a raffle will usually take place. Be sure of a warm welcome, so come along, learn something new, and perhaps make new friends. all, or if interested in heloping to form the biuke libr

Remember my Chains Dear Friends, On Tuesday February 9th, 2016 the Prime Minister announced that six ‘reform prisons’ would be created in England and Wales “to tackle the high levels of violence and reoffending”. However, there was some response from charities regarding how effective these measures are if “prisoners were crammed into filthy institutions with no staff”. This issue reminds me of the Apostle Paul, who wrote a few letters to churches in Asia whilst in prison in Rome. One of the churches was in Colossae. In his conclusion to the letter to the Colossians, he stated, “I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you” (Colossians 4: 18). I wonder if Paul may have dictated to someone to write this letter on his behalf. If so, I wonder if the conditions in which he found himself made it impossible to write since he was literate. Being in chains might have limited his ability to write. Paul might therefore be reminding his readers to help him become free from those chains so that he could live a ‘normal’ life like anyone else. Many people may not be in prison cells but find themselves chained up physically, emotionally and spiritually to debts, addictions, relationships, etc. Most of them want to live ‘normal lives’ but can only do so if we make a move to help them. Secondly, Paul had earlier in the chapter asked his readers to pray for him to proclaim the gospel. It may be that Paul was not imprisoned as a criminal but because of the work he did as a preacher. This reminds us that every prisoner needs our prayer and help, be it a criminal or not. We do not have to judge them for who they are or are not. I also wonder if Paul may not have been warning his readers of the risk of being Christians. It was a risky business to be a preacher in those days 20

Harworth Today

so it could be that he was warning his readers to be ready to face the consequences of following Jesus. Talk of risks reminds me of Dan Walker who will replace Bill Turnbull on BBC breakfast show. This young man has his faith being tested because he has come out to declare what he can do and cannot do on a Sunday. He had to declare that his faith would not affect what he does as a journalist. Many of us face similar situations in our daily routines and are reminded that the world has not changed since biblical times. I wonder if I can remind you that we are in Lent, a time to prepare for Easter day. The website RE:QUEST, explains, “Christians spend the 40 days of Lent preparing for Easter Day. They set aside time to think about whether they are living in a way that makes God happy. They will ask for God’s forgiveness for the times they mess up, and for his help to live in the way that he wishes. Christians specially remember all that Jesus did for each of them when he died on the cross on the first Good Friday. They also remember how he overcame sin and death by rising from death on the first Easter Sunday”. One of the ways to live to make God happy is to consider those who are in prison cells as well as those chained emotionally or spiritually by their actions and relationships. I wonder if you may ask God to lead you to act in a way that will help such a person become free and lead a ‘normal life’. It may involve taking risks as the Apostle Paul and Dan Walker did but do not worry, God will lead you in all that you do by his Spirit. Grace be with you. Yours sincerely,

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning) The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th . Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past.

There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over.

Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.

Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost.

If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.

Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot.

Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! 24

Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.

Harworth Today

Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

News from Recent Arrests/ Court over past 3 months.

Male charged with Breach Of Injunction

Male and Female Prolific Shoplifters receive prison sentence. A Male and Female prolific shoplifters from the Rossington, South Yorkshire area were recently charged with a Shop Theft of approximately £200 of meat at the Aldi store in Harworth along with several other shop thefts in the Doncaster area. They both attended Doncaster Magistrates court on 23rd December 2015 where they both pleaded guilty and received 16 weeks prison sentence each.

A Male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has been charged with a breach of an Anti Social Behaviour Injunction where he was remanded to appear at county court.

Diesel Thefts 2 Males from the Harworth & Bircotes area have been charged with diesel thefts from the East Bassetlaw area and are due to appear at Mansfield Magistrates court at the end of December. Juveniles prosecuted for Possession of Air weapons. 2 Juveniles from the Harworth and Bircotes area have been prosecuted for possession of an unloaded/loaded air weapon in a public place where they were found in possession of an airweapon in the Bircotes area. Both Juveniles are due to appear at Mansfield Youth Court in March 2016.

Vehicle crime and Shed Breaks in the area Harworth and Bircotes has seen an increase of shed breaks and vehicle crime over the past 30 days. Residents need to be aware that in particular Quad bikes, motorbikes/mopeds are being targeted and stolen from properties in the area. It is believed that most of these bikes are then passed on and sold to other persons however it appears that some of these bikes are being used in the Harworth and Bircotes for ‘joy riding’ and have been seen riding around the area at night. There has been some recent success where some of the motorbikes/quadbikes stolen have been found abandoned in nearby woodland areas. Nottinghamshire Police are taking positive action in carrying

out various operations in the area including officers in plain clothes. As a result of these operations some of the stolen vehicles have been found intact with minor damage usually to the ignition where on other occasions they have been burnt out and destroyed. We are asking residents to be extra vigilant in making note of any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area and to pay particular attention in documenting descriptions of persons in particular clothing and if reporting a suspicious vehicle to make a note of the vehicle registration number plate and if possible colour and make of the vehicle in case the vehicle is using false number plates. We are urging anybody with any information as to where the stolen quads/motorbikes are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non-emergency 101 Notts police telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. We are urging residents to be extra vigilant in ensuring that garages and sheds are secure and never to leave them unlocked especially if they connect to your property. To help secure your shed and garden you may want to consider fitting a strong hasp and padlock to your shed door. Make sure the door is strong enough to resist being kicked or pushed in. community hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges. Consider fitting a battery operated shed alarm and visibly mark property you keep in your shed and garage. Some advice around securing your shed can also be found on Nottinghamshire police website under security advice and securing your shed. Or if you wish to speak to our Crime Prevention Unit about protecting your property and reducing your chances of becoming a victim of crime, call 101 ext 800 3011 or email pre.crime@ nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk Anti Social Behaviour : The Harworth Neighbourhood policing Team are continually gathering evidence in relation to tenancy issues in the area and are working closely with social landlords A1 housing and Notts Community Housing Association along with private landlords to support evictions. Throughout 2015 Nottinghamshire Police have assisted other agencies in several evictions taken place within the Harworth and Bircotes area. I would like this opportunity to remind home owners and tenants that any property identified causing issues of anti social behaviour on a regular basis will have the tenancy looked at with support of landlords, and if the evidence supports seek evictions.

that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. However Nottinghamshire Police as reported above have had some recent success in seizing off road quad bikes and arresting/ prosecuting offenders. Over the past 3 months Nottinghamshire Police, have seized a further 4 off road bikes 4 quad bikes and a 4x4 vehicle that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area, and also nearby villages in the East Bassetlaw area. These vehicles were seized after they were identified involved in crime, illegal road use, driving on land and involved in poaching. Some of these vehicles were also stolen vehicles recovered which were found stored in nearby woodland areas. See it? Report it? Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non-emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Speed Detection Operations

The Neighbourhood Policing Team have continued to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area, where the team have carried out active speed detection dates with Quad Bikes Off road bikes the local schools in November seized in the area 2015. The project is aimed at We continue to receive an educating motorists however if increase of incidents involving circumstances meet the criteria quad bikes and off road bikes that prosecutions will also take place. are being used in and around the The project has already shown area. This is an on-going problem benefit to the area, between and we have been made aware January 2015 and January 2016

approximately 3,000 vehicles have been monitored with around 17 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.6% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area. Some motorists have also attended the All Saints school where the pupils have carried out a speed awareness presentation and completed survey questions with the motorists to educate them on the dangers of speeding. The feedback from the pupils and motorists has been very positive in relation to these classroom presentations which focus on education and awareness of speed rather than prosecution. PRIORITY SETTING MEETING (What was the Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting) From the Priority Setting Meeting held on January 6th 2016 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :Priority 1 : Anti Social Behaviour Priority 2 : Environmental Issues Priority 3 : Speeding/Road Safety The Next Priority Setting Meeting will be held on the 6th April 2016 at 2pm at the Harworth Town Hall. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MARCH 2016 WANT LOWER ENERGY BILLS? Citizens Advice Bassetlaw (Bureau is no longer used) now have a specialist who gives advice on how to reduce your costs for gas and electricity; I understand he can help people make significant savings. He sees people by appointment, will visit the severely disabled at home, and is willing to hold clinic sessions. Naturally there is a high demand for this service, but Council could ask him to hold a consultation clinic in H&B Town Hall provided enough people want to attend – you just need to bring your bills with you. If you are interested, please contact the Town Clerk (759037) and leave your name and contact details; if enough people show an interest I will ask C.A.B. for a local clinic session. AUTOMATIC NUMBER PLATE RECOGNITION (A.N.P.R.) Did you know the majority of burglaries in Bassetlaw are carried out by criminals from other areas, especially South Yorkshire? They use main roads and motorways to cross into Bassetlaw, then quickly make their escape back over the border to Sheffield or Doncaster. Police have informed me more A.N.P.R. cameras are being installed in and around our area, creating a ‘monitoring detection shield’ in order to track/ intercept suspicious vehicles. Police have asked Council to point out that fixed A.N.P.R. cameras are purely for criminal detection; they are NOT for use against speeding motorists. LATEST PLANNING APPLICATIONS OF INTEREST TO HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES. Snape Lane Industrial Site – permission given to build 3 units for the manufacture of bricks, roof tiles, roof trusses – will create 80 jobs Harworth South Business Park, situated between Blyth Road and A614. Long term estimate more than 3,000 jobs – outline permission granted. Off Scrooby Road, on land rear of Original Factory Shop – permission to build 39 dwellings Showman’s site at Oldcotes – refused. WELCOME TO KAREN Karen Tarburton joins the staff of Harworth and Bircotes on 1st

March. Karen is a very experienced Community Development Worker who has knowledge of a wide range of funding opportunities and a very successful track record. Born and bred in Warsop, she was a volunteer in local community groups and projects, which then led to her studying and gaining recognised qualifications. Karen will work with both Council and community groups in shaping and delivering community projects; her knowledge of writing funding bids and of project management will, we hope, bring in extra money to deliver both big and small results, some of which are outlined in the Neighbourhood Plan. So, if you have an idea, something you want to see happen, and you are prepared to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in, then contact Karen at the Town Hall (759037) FORTHCOMING EVENTS Don’t forget the Blood Donor session on April 1st, at the Town Hall 21st April marks the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration. We plan to have an official beacon, along with Retford and Worksop. 30th April Tour de Yorkshire sees the Women’s race in the morning and Men’s race in the afternoon pass through H&B. THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE (AND HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES!) SATURDAY 30TH APRIL The race attracts huge international interest, with media coverage to 70 countries and millions watching. Last year’s Tour de France race brought £50m into the Yorkshire economy, and we think our local economy should get a bit of that, this time round. The Women’s race is in the morning, followed by the Men’s race

in the afternoon (times yet to be released); visiting spectators are likely to stay around for both – this is an opportunity for local shops and pubs. The profile of our Town will be raised, so we need local people, neighbours, groups and business to enter into the spirit of the race. Remember, the race will pass through our Township because of Tommy Simpson – Council is thinking about banners and posters displaying his name and photograph, and I know some of you are looking for old bikes to paint yellow, and creating unique bunting with a blue and yellow theme. Cllr. Steph Robinson will be visiting schools, groups and local businesses to identify their ideas – so come on, what would you like to do for this very special day? SPOTLIGHT ON NEW COUNCIL HOUSES IN HARWORTH: SMITH SQUARE/THOMPSON AVE. I was pleased to see this 3 year building programme to replace Airey houses featured in a Local Authority Building magazine. It stressed the very high quality of the houses – energy efficient heating systems, sprinkler systems, forward planning within the designs should the needs of individual residents change (e.g. plumbing is in place for a downstairs shower if stairs become a problem), and the modern appearance of the different buildings. What really impressed them was that A1 had worked with the tenants to keep friends and neighbours together, and so there was tenant involvement and regular meetings with residents. We look forward to the completion of the project and appearance of a new playground.

WHO WOULD BE A TOWN CLERK? People sometimes say they could do this job, so let me explain some of the essential requirements:1. The Certificate in Local Council Administration, which requires hours of study and the submission of completed exam papers – and a 100% pass mark! 2. Accounting skills using spread sheets, so that all income and expenditure is recorded, known future costs are planned for within the budget, and Council is kept informed of its current financial position. The Town Clerk is the responsible financial officer and has to ensure good practice is followed – all accounts are scrutinised by an external auditor. 3. Knowledge of the Law in relationship to local government rules and policies, plus Employment Law, and Health and Safety regulations. 4. Lots of patience! There are always minutes to type, letters to write, documents to file, and questions from the public and other organisations. It is considered good practice to recruit a Town Clerk who does not live locally. This ensures the Town Clerk is impartial and therefore cannot be accused of showing favour to a friend or family member. Finding a Town Clerk is becoming ever more difficult; fewer people hold the required qualifications nowadays. If interested in becoming a Town Clerk, ring our own Wendy Davies (759037) who I am sure will be happy to tell you more. TO MAKE YOU SMILE: C.C.T.V. February saw the start of the installation of the 8 metre high C.C.T.V. column next to the Community Information Centre/Police Station, to be followed by 4 cameras in sites highlighted as ‘hotspots’ by the police. All cameras across Bassetlaw are monitored 24 hours a day by B.D.C. in their Worksop centre – the first sign of trouble and the Police are alerted. I am so looking forward to the celebrations promised by Cllr. Brian Letherland, who has previously stated in despair that if H&B ever got C.C.T.V. he would eat his hat – after all, we have only been waiting 7 years. Bring it on, Brian! APOLOGY My apologies if my mention of the cemetery gates last month upset anyone – no offence was intended.

In order that patients can identify and recognise staff the practice are developing a photo-board or display of staff photographs to be displayed in the waiting areas of both surgeries and in the meantime we at the PPG continue with information about the practice.

Please note that patients who need urgent care at short notice may NOT be able to see the doctor of their choice and the refusal to see a different doctor is not the same as not being offered an appointment.

We start with Dr Kadambini Kumari MB BS MRCPCH MRCGP 1994. GMC reg no. 5201061 Dr Kumari is the Lead Practitioner and has responsibility for Medicine Management and Patient Experience. Having qualified originally in Patna India Dr Kumari joined The Tickhill and Colliery Practice in 2007 and is now in her ninth year as one of our GPs. She is full time, and has a particular interest in Dermatology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. We continue our information on The Practice next month with Dr Pande.

Question and Answer In response to the question (posed by a patient) “What will happen if I need to see a GP urgently and there are no appointments available? The practice manager explained that all such cases are passed to the Duty GP who makes the decision as to what should happen.
