Welcome to

How sad would be November if we didn’t have knowledge of the Spring? Edwin Way Teale The year is racing by, Halloween is upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner! I have spent several days in October accompanying my son as he visits University Open Days. It has brought back many happy memories of my own time at University. Many aspects of campuses remain the same as they were in the 90’s although it has been apparent everywhere we have been, that huge investment has been made in buildings and facilities – not least the student accommodation, where ensuites are now the expected norm! I mentioned last month that we had been shortlisted for four business awards at the 2015 National Magazine Publisher’s Awards. If you follow our facebook page you will already know that I was thrilled to come home with 2 awards that night. Our newly redesigned website won ‘Best Website’ and the cartoon video that features on the website also won an award in the ‘Best Promotional Video’ category. It is lovely to receive some recognition within the industry that we are doing something right, and spending time with so many other fabulous magazine producers, many of whom have become my friends is one of the highlights of my working year. The December issue will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th November. The December magazines always contain the most community content of the year, and as levels of submissions are already at a record high, I must urge you to get your items to me on time, so that I can ensure that sufficient space is available for everything. This does apply to advertising bookings too!

Best wishes, Paula x

Be Sure of a Warm Welcome!

There was a very good attendance for this month’s meeting of the group. The Chair thanked everyone who had supported the Big MacMillan Coffee morning, which had raised £512. This has already been sent to MacMillan and a thank-you message received, along with details of next year’s event! Members learned that on Thursday 19 November, someone from A1 Housing’s “T’Internet Buddies” will be attending and will have laptops available to give instruction on how to use the internet to access the A1 Housing website in order to pay rent etc, when in the New Year we will be expected to use the internet for almost everything. Members were reminded that the Bishop of Southwell will be conducting a service of dedication for the memorial to miners who were killed at Harworth Colliery, and this will be followed by refreshments at the Town Hall, provided by the ladies of the TRA. The first burial at the new cemetery on Styrrup Road will take place later this month, and we are looking at improving road safety on this road, in view of the fact that the hearse, led by the vicar and the funeral director, will have to cross the carriageway at the brow of the hill, with no view of oncoming traffic. There was concern about the vandalism which is once again taking place concerning the buses which travel around the estate in Bircotes. If it continues then we run the risk of losing our service around the estate, which could in turn result in some people losing their jobs in Doncaster or Worksop, when they rely on the bus service to get to and from work. This is mindless vandalism, and parents are urged to be more aware of what their youngsters are doing, especially as this is happening late at night, when we would normally expect schoolchildren to be in bed. The police continue to monitor this. Notts County Council Highways department have informed us that they will be placing a hardstanding at the bus stop at Melbourne Grove, sometime before the end of this financial year, following reports of elderly residents falling on the uneven grassed area when alighting from buses. Talks were given by PC Jim Martin, about policing in the area (a full police report is printed elsewhere in this magazine), and also by District Councillor Dave Challinor, updating us on what is happening at Bassetlaw District Council. The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 3 November, at 10.30 am, when someone from Bassetlaw District Council’s Parks and Open Spaces will talk about the work of their department. All are welcome to come along to a friendly meeting with refreshments, and a raffle.

Entry is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets with all the proceeds going towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with the fireworks let off in 2 sessions, the first starting at 6pm. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Harworth Colliery Football Club November 2015 Update Hello and welcome to this months update from around the club. It was included in last months article about the new cabin being put in as the new turnstile for the ground. Well I have to start by advising of some mindless vandalism to this within just a few weeks of it being in place, the window was smashed and has had to be replaced at cost to the club. We have been given some names but the local authorities can do nothing without confirmed witness statement. Fortunatly for the club we have some great support and new Under 19’s Kit Sponsor Crown Conservatories was on hand to replace the glass for us, so thanks Fleck for the speedy response and sorting. This money though should be being used for other projects we have going on so we ask all parents if they know their children are going up to the rec that they insist they respect our property, it is there for all of us to use not abuse! It is spooky how the broken glass looks like the FA Cup though so maybe that is an omen, its hard to start with a negative but these things must be raised and dealt with. Turning it into a positive now and I will start with the Juniors, at the time of writing both our under 14’s and 15’s have an 100% record in the league, in fact the Under 14’s are yet to even concede a goal in the league, this is a great feat in itself given that they have gone up a division this year is even better, well done to all involved and all that needs to be said is keep it going.

to eradicate and going to places like Hallam has given all of us a taste of playing and pitting our wits against better opposition, so it’s the league we must concentrate on and promotion is key. Staying with the 1st team and the Whole club would like to thank Mark and Steve from Lifting Support services for sponsoring the kit for the third season running, they were on hand for the team photo showing off the new kit, their support has been great and having local businesses get behind us gives us the platform to push on and we hope we can repay that support by doing well on and off the field. The Under 19’s have followed suit by also being the nearly men, they are yet to record a win but their performances have been excellent, going to teams such as Sheffield United, Hallam, Handsworth and Worksop Town shows what they are up against. The aim for the 19’s was to get players into the club to progress into the seniors, that is being achieved with almost all the squad being involved with either the 1sts or the reserves. There are some excellent young players who will only improve playing with the seniors so although we won’t be winning that league we are more than achieving what we wanted. They have also had to play all their games away from home due to the Floodlight issues so once we do get the home games we hope you will give them the support they need. As ever thank you all for your support whether that be with the Seniors or the Juniors and you can keep upto date with fixtures, match reports and news items on our Website Pitch Hero/Harworth Colliery, or on Facebook or Twitter @HCIFC hope to see you all at the Colliery soon Regards

Jonathan Wilson

The 1st team have been the nearly men last month, going out in both the FA Vase and the Sheffield Senior Chairman @jonycw. Challenge cup, however it could have been oh so different! We visited Hallam FC and the Worlds oldest ground in the FA Vase, a competition that we havent been in for over a decade and we was 3 nil up against the NCEL side at half time only to lose the game 4-3 conceding all 4 in a mad 10 minute. The Sheffield cup game we led 2-1 until the last minute where we conceded a penalty only to lose 4-2 in Extra time. Tales of being nearly men are something all the staff are working hard 8

Remembrance and Memorials

Dearr Friends, November is a month of memorials and remembrance. It includes All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day, and Remembrance Day, among others. Memorials help us to connect with our past. Remembering the past can help us or haunt us. It depends on what part of the past comes into our memory and how we have lived with it. Some of the memories can be very unpleasant and may need us to attend to them in order to move on with our lives. On the other hand, some memories encourage us and help us to rekindle the hope we have for the future. These memories mostly strengthen us in our endeavours. In my local dialect, the month of November is called ‘ ’ (pronounced ‘o-ba-re-fiw’), meaning ‘a life of beauty’. Talking about lives of beauty reminds us of people who have sacrificed their lives for our good. Such lives motivate most of us. In Christianity, we are encouraged to remember Jesus Christ, who died to save us from sin. As part of remembering Jesus’ death on the cross, Christians frequently meet to share the ‘Eucharist’. Other people call it the “Lord’s Supper” or ‘Holy Communion”. It is a time when we share bread and wine together. It is also a time when we are reminded of God’s love for the world. He loved us to the extent of sacrificing his son, Jesus Christ, for us. Moreover, the Lord’s Supper reminds us that each of us is united with God through his love. Hence, we are to love one another as God has loved us. 12

Harworth Today

Talking of loving one another, I wonder if I can suggest that you make the following prayer yours. Bruce Prewer wrote it and it says: “God of Jesus and our God, mindful of all those choice souls who have gone on ahead of us, teach us to follow their example to the best of our ability: • to feed the poor in body or spirit, • to support and comfort the mourners and the repentant, • to encourage the meek and stand with them in crises, • to affirm those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, • to cherish and learn from the merciful, • to be humbled by, and stand with, the peacemakers”. This month, as you celebrate the events of remembrance and memorials, I wonder if you can take a moment and pause to reflect on how the examples of those who have gone before us can encourage you to love another person. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely, Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel: 01302857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Oldcotes Village Hall

A Big Thank You from Bircotes Pre-school

Following a fairly recent refurbishment Oldcotes Village Hall is an excellent venue for any occasion. From Table Tennis to Latin Dancing and Carpet Bowls to Line Dancing!

You may be aware that Bircotes Pre-school has temporarily moved premises and is currently running sessions from the Harworth and Bircotes Children’s Sure Start Centre.

The dance floor is second to none, and perfect for any sort of dancing, as our wide variety of dance classes proves. The kitchens (two) are modern and well equipped. There is plenty of safe parking immediately outside the Hall.

It has taken many months of planning and a lot of support from a variety of services in and around the community, which as a registered charity and not for profit organisation is something we could not continue without.

As such we would like to take the opportunity to thank the following: Serlby Park Academy for giving us the time to find alternative premises, when the Pre-school originally set up the Academy was known as North Border Comprehensive so you can imagine how many years we’ve provided Early Years services from their Monday school. The Harworth and Bircotes Community Hall 10 a.m. – 12 noon – Mother and Toddlers Evenings (various times) Private Dancing lessons in Latin Committee or as we like to call it The Welfare Hall, (Mick Mason and the team) who have given us so much and Ballroom support over the years by using their car park and hall for (Text/ring 07800 524134 for details) access and events and still continue to do so. Glenn and Tuesday Adam from Harworth Estates and their team, who have 10 a.m. – 12 noon – Table Tennis kindly donated, delivered and stored equipment. SANTA DASH, Tickhill

Children’s disability charity, Brainwave, is organising a 5k Santa Dash taking place on the morning of Saturday 5th December 2015 from Tickhill Cricket Club. As a fun run, it is not a timed event and runners of all abilities (including walkers) are welcome to take part. The Santa Dash is the first fundraising event that Brainwave has undertaken in Yorkshire. Brainwave helps children living with disabilities and special needs to achieve greater independence. The children have a range of conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, genetic disorders and developmental delay. All proceeds raised from the event will support local children.

Amelia Poppy, is aged two and lives in Tickhill. She lives with a genetic condition known as Koolen de Vries Syndrome. Brainwave has developed an exercise programme tailored for Amelia. According to mum, Claire, “Amelia has benefited greatly from the brainwave programme; she has made amazing progress with her mobility, communication skills and overall development. Through attending Brainwave we, as her parents, felt assured that Amelia was receiving the right therapy to optimise her potential.” Richard Clarke of Brainwave enthused about the event, “The Santa Dash will be brilliant fun. There will be Christmas music as people gather for the run. There will be a special appearance by the ‘real Santa’ to hand medals to all the runners. Afterwards there will be refreshments in the Cricket Club. It is a brilliant way to help local children, like Amelia.” Runner registration is £15 per adult and £10 per child (up to 13). Santa Suits and runner medals will be provided to all participants. Team packages are also available for local businesses to take part. Runner registration forms are available at KSM Dry Cleaners & Card Shop in Tickhill, and also available online via the Charity website: http://www.brainwave.org.uk/yorkshire-santa-dash/ T

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Garden Bonfires November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn

plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke.

Bonfire Safety Check-list • Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. • Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. • Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy—just in case • Don’t leave the fire unattended. • Keep small children and pets out of the way. • Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting.

Harworth Today

On Monday 5th October 2015, 2 males were arrested by Police for Burglary offences and failing to stop for police whilst riding an off road quad bike. The 2 males were initially sighted in the Torworth area where the Quad bike then travelled to the Ranskill, Mattersey and then Harworth where the vehicle failed to stop for police. A police helicopter was also involved in the incident which assisted in locating the quad bike and also recording its movements which resulted in the quad bike being located and seized where the 2 males were subsequently arrested. The 2 males have been bailed pending further enquiries.

We continue to receive an increase of incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. However Nottinghamshire Police as reported above have had some recent success in seizing off road quad bikes and arresting/prosecuting offenders. Over the past 4 months Nottinghamshire Police, have seized 7 off road bikes and 5 quad bikes that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area, and also nearby villages in the East Bassetlaw area. Some of these bikes seized have been examined and confirmed stolen property where enquiries are ongoing. Some of these vehicles will be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal. A juvenile is being prosecuted for fail to stop for police, No insurance and driving without a driving licence after being identified riding a quad bike in the area, where the Juvenile is due in court in October. There have also been several TORS (traffic Offence Report) tickets issued to persons identified riding off road bikes/ quad bikes in the area. Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

community Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property.

Darker Nights As the nights start to draw in more also consider leaving a light on indoors or putting your lights on a timer if you are going to be away from your property for the evening/overnight. Once again we strongly urge people to

ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - NOVEMBER 2015 THE MINERS MEMORIAL COMMUNITY GARDEN The first week in September saw stonemason Keith Ashton and his team installing the memorial stone listing those men who died as a result of an accident at Harworth Colliery, plus an accompanying plaque with the names of those who died of natural causes whilst at work. It appears from the compliments received that many of you approve next comes landscaping on the site THE DEDICATION CEREMONY BY THE BISHOP OF SOUTHWELL – THIS WILL BE HELD ON SUNDAY, 13TH DECEMBER, IN THE AFTERNOON AT 3PM. We intend this to be a true community event, all are welcome, and the Town Hall will be open for refreshments following the service. Wreaths: I know some families, community groups and specific groups from within the Colliery workforce have asked about laying wreaths at the service…this is left to you, it is entirely your decision. WHAT ELSE? Well, the Library is keen to gather information about any of the men who lost their lives at Harworth Colliery in order to make a memorable exhibition you can identify with, and also create an archive for future generations; the intention is to work with families, so any photographs, written information and your memories of an individual will be welcome. Deborah Bowden is taking the lead for the Library, so talk to her for more information. ARE YOU ON THE ELECTORAL REGISTER? Bassetlaw District Council has begun its annual canvass for 2015. Household Enquiry Forms (H.E.F.) were sent to every household in August; reminder forms have recently been sent to all households which have not responded to the initial form. What is the purpose of the canvass? –to make sure elector information is up-to-date. You are asked to check that the information on your form is

correct, and to respond straightaway. It is particularly important that anyone who has moved house recently looks out for the form and checks they are registered. For anyone not yet registered, you can do so on-line or by returning the form. WHY BOTHER? Because you can then vote in:• A Referendum on the Harworth and Bircotes Neighbourhood Plan later this year • The Police and Crime Commissioner elections May 2016 • The European Referendum, likely to be next year What if you are not on the Electoral Register? Obviously you can’t vote, so your opinion is not represented, BUT not being on the electoral register:• Affects your credit score • You may have problems obtaining a mobile phone • You may have difficulty opening a bank account DO NOT LOSE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: has been assessed by an independent examiner, followed by approval at a full Council meeting at Bassetlaw District Council on 15th October. Next comes the final consultation with you, the people of Harworth and Bircotes, when you will be asked to vote in a referendum. Is it important? Yes. Not only does the Neighbourhood Plan act as a blueprint for the future development of this community, it also gives you power to dismiss some proposals you don’t want; so once accepted, any future intention to build on e.g. land designated in the Plan as green

space, can be blocked. CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA: THURSDAY 26TH NOVEMBER, 3 – 7PM, AT THE TOWN HALL Just a reminder about carol singing, Santa and his Grotto, children’s entertainers and amusements, stalls and the switch-on of the Xmas tree lights. Council is grateful for the support from the Community Action Group and the Tenants and Residents Association in helping to make all this happen. A XMAS TREE: this year Council is planning on having a traditional Xmas tree. This will be a real test of community spirit, because in recent years the tree and lights were repeatedly vandalised and so we stopped providing one.… I’m hoping this year will be vandal-free fingers crossed! CHRISTMAS STREET DECORATIONS: Council has investigated having street decorations on Main Street, Old Harworth; as you know, Highways have to install special boxes on street light columns enabling the power to light up the decorations. Highways has refused our request, because ‘the lights would distract motorists using Harworth Crossroads’. Really?? Must be different motorists who pass through Tickhill and elsewhere at Christmas! FREE DOG MICROCHIPPING SESSION The free session... held in the Town Hall at the end of September saw 65 dogs chipped, in readiness for the change in the Law in 2016; 50 of the dogs also had health checks. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED event was led by the Dogs Trust, who provided the microchips and veterinary nurse, working in partnership with the Dog Warden from Bassetlaw District Council. STAGECOACH BUS SERVICE: ABUSE IT, AND WE’LL LOSE IT! Management of Stagecoach may have to withdraw the evening No. 21 bus service to our Town because of harassment by teenagers in the Bircotes area. It seems youths on cycles cross in front of the bus, causing the driver to brake. Other youths then disable the bus by pressing the emergency stop button at the back of the bus, thus switching off the engine. The driver gets off the bus to rectify matters, but the youths again disable the bus as the driver returns to his cab. This leaves the driver with no alternative but to call the Police. Stagecoach have now instructed drivers not to get off the bus at all because of verbal abuse and even being spat at. No doubt these youths think this is quite exciting and really funny… they don’t realise the serious implications of their actions: • This is a valued service for people returning home late at night, especially those whose jobs require a late finish. • If we lose this service, what happens to those people reliant on Stagecoach – how do they get home? Will they have to give up their jobs? • If one of the youths on a cycle is injured, who is going to get the blame? • And if a youth is apprehended by the Police and appears in court, what chance will he have of getting a job in the future? One suggestion is that this particular route could be changed, so that the bus travels only along Scrooby Road and not around Bircotes. Yes, I know it means further to walk, but at least people could still get home; let’s hope this nonsense stops and the service continues as normal. I think it a sad day when a bunch of youths can determine which services are/

aren’t delivered to our Town. AN UPDATE ON: STREET LIGHTS In August, the lights went out along the stretch of Bawtry Road from Melbourne Grove to/including Russell Avenue. Several weeks passed; following repeated phone calls from residents and Harworth and Bircotes Town Council the lighting was restored. Ten days later, the same lights went out again. This time, phone calls to Highways have been accompanied by messages to the County Councillor who has responsibility for Highways. Hallelujah – 30th September, the street lights were back on! Thank you, Councillor Kevin Greaves, who tells me a happy O.A.P. makes him smile – I suspect he means me! FURTHER INFORMATION FROM NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL: This section of Bawtry Road is powered from a Northern Powergrid (N.P.G.) point. The initial repair (replacing a fuse) failed because they were really dealing with a ‘dead’ service i.e. no electric supply leaving the pillar that feeds the columns. BLYTH ROAD LIGHTS: N.P.G. records had listed them as repaired and working; following my complaint N.C.C. checked and found they were not. It seems a new feeder pillar had been installed but somehow, someone forgot to complete the job and get it energised - you couldn’t make this up! N.B. ‘Dead’ services can only be repaired by the Network Distributor (in this case N.P.G) so N.C.C. are totally reliant on the response by the company; I understand this does cause a disproportionate amount of public dissatisfaction. I bet! Recent Traffic Lights: it seems we have had an epidemic of traffic lights recently, due to road repairs, replacement paving and laying new power lines. Thank you, everyone, for your patience and understanding. FLAG STONES: the problem with

DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3200 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk

uneven flagstones on the shop fronts has been addressed and no longer presents a trip hazard. This work has been paid for by H&B Town Council as a ‘one-off’ intervention, and although it is not our responsibility, Council felt it better to act and avoid any serious injuries to people, rather than await the outcome of lengthy legal discussions allocating responsibility and costs. And yes, we did get permission to do this. THE NEW CEMETERY: has now come into use; it now has a border of box hedging to denote the specific area dedicated to children, staff have built a small wooden shelter to house the wooden grave shutters, and water/electric works have been completed. THE OLD CEMETERY: extra seed has been laid on the circular bank where cars turn inside the cemetery and I notice the grass is already looking much greener. The work on the embankment along Cemetery Lane has been completed; new kerbs are in place, fresh topsoil has been laid, grass seed put down, and the rubbish removed. WHAT A MUCKY LOT! Talking of rubbish, the couple who sit in the Cemetery drinking beer and then leave their empty beer cans behind – please show a little respect and find somewhere else to drink, and dispose of your rubbish responsibly. Litter on Shrewsbury Road: some residents are in despair about the amount of litter thrown into their garden – over their fence, stuffed between their garden wall and hedge – this is sweet wrappings, crisp packets, food containers, and it is part of a trail leading from the Asda traffic lights to Gilbert Road. Sadly, most of this rubbish comes from the younger generation eating ‘on the hoof’. Council intends putting up anti-litter signs and extra bins, and monitoring the problem. PLASTIC BAGS: you will be aware that large stores are now charging 5p for every single use plastic bag. Again, this is intended to reduce the amount of rubbish we generate and

community then have to dispose of. I have invested in a couple of strong shopping bags, and I am trying to be more responsible about creating waste, though it can be difficult, the way everything is over-packaged nowadays. On a similar theme, it is not the responsibility of Council staff to pick up dog faeces left on the street; this falls to the dog owner. If you know who is failing to pick it up, please report the matter to Environmental Health Services at Bassetlaw District Council. Someone once said to me “that is what the staff are paid to do” – no, they are not. Council provides dog bins which are emptied regularly; besides, collecting the amount of dog muck left on our streets would require a full time worker! Ask yourself – would you do that job? I see many people picking up after their dogs – thank you – but as ever the few spoil it for the rest of us. Another point: our staff cannot collect and dispose of animals killed on the road. Yes, I know it is a distressing sight, but we are not equipped to do this, Environment Services at Bassetlaw are the people you need to contact. TO MAKE YOU SMILE Listening to a radio debate about The Naked Rambler and the £1m cost to the nation due to numerous court appearances and several short spells in prison, I was highly entertained by the comments from listeners phoning in and contributing to the discussion. “I believe you should let it all hang out” stated one woman. “He had a rough time trying to walk through Halifax” said another caller. Then, a dedicated nudist rang in, stating he was in trouble with his parish council for working on their allotments stark naked! Suddenly, I was struck by a dreadful thought: Q. What would this Council do if, for example, one of our allotment keepers decided to plant potatoes or pull up parsnips, in the nude? A. Believing you should always try to turn a problem into an opportunity, the solution would be to nip across the road with my camera and take a few photographs. Council could then sell them to those local people who would appreciate ‘a sight for sore eyes’; furthermore, we could make a bit more money to re-invest back into the community by involving the media – national newspapers, or the local news slots on the telly; this could even be followed up by a calendar…. Brilliant! So come on, chaps, one small sacrifice for the
