Thanks also to the contingent from Harworth Brass who provided the Music, my colleagues from the Town Council, Janet & Helen and the Ladies of the Church, who made some wonderful cakes; ladies you would give that lot on the TV baking programme a run for their money anytime. It was truly a memorable afternoon for such a special occasion. Again thank you.

Tenants & Residents Association The monthly meeting of the group took place on Tuesday 4 August 2015. The Group had been chosen by Asda as their nominated group working in the community, and were presented with a cake to mark Asda’s 50th anniversary. This took place at their coffee shop in the Town Hall on Thursday 16 July, and the cake was shared among members. It was reported that there had been a rather disappointing turn out for the recent joint VE/VJ day commemoration at the memorial in old Harworth. Gavin Bailey, of Bassetlaw District Council’s Environmental Health Department, attended to address the meeting and set out for members what his department does. Basically they are responsible for anything which affects the environment, and the three main issues are, dog fouling, littering and bonfires. They can also issue warnings and fines for noise, such as playing overly loud music, and excessive dog barking. The department relies on members of the public alerting them to problem areas, and without this reporting the department will not be aware of problems. The main number for Environmental Health is 01909 533399, and for the dog warden it is 01909 533219.

If members of the public are aware of a dog owner who allows the dog to foul without clearing up, at regular times, then someone can come out and catch the offender, and they will be fined. The council are to make it an offence to have dogs in enclosed play areas of parks, and dogs must be on a lead in cemeteries. They now have Protection Orders, which replaced ASBOs. Regarding bonfires, these can be reported and the address given of the offending house, and a letter will be sent. It is an offence to have a bonfire if it is causing upset to other households. He left a supply of cards which gave “prompts” for the information needed when reporting issues. Anyone requiring these cards can collect them from members of the TRA, or from the Town Hall. There will be a Big MacMillan Coffee Morning to be held at the Town Hall on Thursday 24 September, from 9.30 am to mid-day. There will be a cake stall, handicrafts stall, bookstall, etc. The next meeting will take place on 1 September, at 10.30 am in the Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome, refreshments served, and a raffle usually takes place.

Harworth Colliery Football Club September 2015 Update Hello and welcome to a new, exciting and we hope succesful season at Harworth Colliery F.C. As ever the summer break has been a very busy one whether that be sorting new teams and registrations, gaining new sponsors and income like the Howard Webb night we had on July the 18th and also improving the facilities up at the Colliery Ground. We are delighted to have a couple of new teams for this season, the first being our Under 8’s managed by Adam King and assisted by Shaun Kingston. The Junior set up as seen a steady decline in teams for the last 10 years but we hope that by having this team and the interest it has caused then further new teams will follow. For example we have enough players for a Under 12’s side now all lads from the Village but unfortunatly just don’t have anyone willing to take charge of them. The club would put interested people through whatever courses are needed, so please get in touch.
Matty with Tom Walker and Neil from Clay Lane showing off the new walls built by him at the Club. The new walls as well as improving the aesthetics of the Ground and semi enclosing it will also allow the club to offer more Ground advertising which we feel is very competitive £150 for the 1st season and then £100 after that, includes a full page in the matchday programm. All details below or contact me on 07979 958255 if interested, it would be great to have all local businesses support.
The Under 8’s have already contested in a summer tournament at Wheatley and won their first game on their new pitch 11-2 against Blyth, all did great with goals coming from Harvey Kingston, Ronnie Hancock 5, Jay Chapman 2 and Kieran Makin 3, we hope you really enjoy your first season.
The second new team is the Under 19’s who will play Midweek in the North Midlands Development League against the likes of Sheff Utd and Worksop Town, this is being managed by Mark Latham and Steve Wibberley both Colliery through and through, we all know what a tough challenge this will be but one we are all relishing.
Staying with the Under 8’s we are delighted that Matty Roberts Building Services has again sponsored the Juniors section and Matty has also been busy erecting new walls on the 1st team pitch behind both goals, huge thanks to Matty and to Neil at Clay Lane Construction for his continued support of the club and the work carried out to get new electricity supply at the ground.
The 1st teams first home game of the Season is September 5th V Retford FC and the Under 19’s on September the 9th. We hope to see you all through the gates supporting us as ever. On a different note the club would like to thank all those who took part and Donated to the Robert Needham Memorial Walk 46 miles via the Cuckoo Way which took place on August the 8th. The Facebook Page is live as well as the Go Fund me page if you are yet to donate, current total is approaching £3k and will be put towards building a stand in Roberts Honour at the Football Club, great acheivement by all. All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Harworth Colliery F.C.
Matty with Adam King and the Under 8’s Sporting their new Kit sponsored by Matty.

Methodist Minister It’s free. Take it! Dear Friends, I wonder if I can continue to discuss issues regarding the season of harvest. September is called ‘Fankwa’ in my local dialect. It may be translated as ‘take it free’. In Ghana, September is part of the harvest season just as in the U.K. Hence, a bumper crop and fishing season calls for people giving lots of free food to friends, relations and the under–privileged. In days gone by, it was one of the ways of making sure that each member of the society was well catered for. On the other hand, freebies are rare in many cultures now. Most of us even question people’s motives when they hand out gifts to us let alone freebies. In one of the communities I serve as a Minister in Doncaster, I remember someone telling me off when I tried to help the person. The person’s response was, “I’m not a charity case so don’t let me feel like one”. Yes, you are not a charity case and we don’t want you to feel like one. However, Christians are encouraged to help each other in order to make people feel safe and secure. As part of the harvest celebrations going on in our many church situations, I wonder if I can take this opportunity to commend groups and individuals in our communities, especially our churches, that are helping people to feel safe, secure and at peace with each other as they provide basic needs and advice. As an institution that is present in the community in which it finds itself, the church can be defined in many ways. One definition is that it is caring. John Stott, in his book ‘The living church. Convictions of a lifelong pastor’, describes the traits of the church as people loving one another, forbearing one another, forgiving one another, and bearing one another’s burdens.
He continues by saying that the church offers ‘friendship to the lonely, support to the weak, and acceptance to those who are despised and rejected by society’. In so doing, it is expressing the love of God. I wonder if I can suggest to you to remember to extend a hand of friendship as part of your harvest celebration. On the other hand if you get the opportunity to receive a gift, don’t feel that you’re a ‘charity case’ but rather, it is God’s love being extended to you. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Tickhill and District Lions Club Following the sad death of Tickhill mayor Councillor Ray Hill we have made donations to both of the charities nominated at his funeral, Tickhill in Bloom and Methodist Church and Charities. We have also donated £250 to the Rossington Children’s Centre to cover the cost of a coach trip to Cleethorpes on 19th August. On the barbecue front we assisted Tickhill Cricket Club on 12th July for the 6 a side tournament in the morning and then for the match between Tickhill and the South Yorkshire League Select X1 in the afternoon. This was to mark the grand opening of the new pavilion by Geoff York, the oldest surviving member of the club at 95. An enjoyable day in front of a good crowd who can now make use of some excellent facilities. The barbecue team will be in action again on 26th September for the TFest day of music when there will be stages at the Scarbrough Arms and the Cricket Club. Note for your diaries. Another function at the Cricket Club - on Saturday 7th November there will be a big bonfire, super firework show, an excellent barbecue and the usual range of quality drinks. Details of timings for the bonfire and the fireworks will be advertised closer to the date.

Dementia Friends Training As previously stated our chosen theme for this year is Dementia Awareness. This mirrors a national campaign run by the Alzheimer’s Society. We have a trained Dementia Friends Champion who is wanting to run dementia awareness sessions for anyone who feels they would like to have an understanding of dementia and how it can affect people. The sessions run for about an hour. If you are interested in attending a talk please contact Judith Barton on 01302 751276 or email jmd.bart51@gmail.com. The first training session which is to be held on Tuesday September 15th 2015 in the Parish Rooms Tickhill is FULL. However, more sessions are planned just contact Judith to book a place.

2 The Flu Clinic will be held at Tickhill Surgery on Saturday October 3rd 2015. Those patients who qualify for a ‘Flu Vaccination are encouraged to book to attend. Appointments for vaccinations at Harworth are also bookable.
We know it is frustrating when someone who arrives, in the waiting room, after you, is called before you. However, all patients are seen in the order they are booked for and other patients may be booked for a different health professional.
How to reduce your risk of catching infections Medical Research by Professor Little of The University of Southampton and written in The Lancet, has shown that thorough hand washing at least 10 times a day can significantly cut our risk of catching infections. (20% lower risk of catching flu’ and a 14% reduction in the general risk of infection) Thorough handwashing means covering the whole hand in soap and water (or hand gel if water is not available) and ensuring all parts are washed. A demonstration is available online. Add in training ourselves not to touch our faces and the benefits increase. Simple and cost effective. garden view
By Rachel Leverton
Autumn Equinox September 23rd is a special date in the gardening calendar. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length. Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit. This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year. Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be 18
planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on the patio. Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leafraking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season. The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016.
Autumn Lawn Care Sweep the leaves. I put mine in a perforated dustbin liner, in a dry spot and wait for them to rot down. Rake Use a wire rake to pull out all the dead moss and thatch. I put everything I collect into the compost bin. Spike lawn Push a garden fork right through the lawn into the earth below then rock it a little to open up the lawn’s surface and allow air in. Brush with top dressing This is available from garden centres. Brush it into the holes with a stiff broom. To make your own top dressing, mix 3 parts top soil with one part peat substitute and 6 parts sharp sand.

Quad Bikes in the area
We continue to receive an increase of incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. Throughout January to May 2015 the Neighbourhood policing team, have seized 5 off road bikes and 3 quad bikes that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area. Some of these bikes seized have been examined and confirmed stolen property where enquiries are ongoing. Some of these vehicles will be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal. Following a Police operation a quad bike and trailer were seized by officers in April both were reported to be stolen. Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
1st July 2015 and 31St July 2015 1 Burglary Dwelling (including attempt) 4 Burglary Other (including attempt) 4 Criminal Damage (including Dwelling) 7 Theft Other (including shop theft and theft in dwelling) 6 Vehicle Crime
Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We continue to offer free property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.
Speeding Vehicles At the recent Priority Setting meeting the issue of speeding vehicles has been raised as one of the three main priorities
in the area. The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be continuing to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area. The Neighbourhood policing team are arranging some more active speed detection dates with school in June 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and May 2015 approximately 1600 vehicles have been monitored with around 10 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.65% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area.
PRIORITY SETTING MEETING (What was the Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting) From the Priority Setting Meeting held on April 8th 2015 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :Priority 1 : Anti Social Behaviour Priority 2 : Environmental Issues Priority 3 : Speeding/Road Safety The Next Priority Setting Meeting will be held on the Wednesday 7th October at 2pm at the Harworth Town Hall.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2015 LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD Reflecting on what has changed in our community over the last few years, I am encouraged by the progress made:• A bigger Town Hall that is fit for purpose, plus the third most successful Sure Start in Nottinghamshire – and what an asset that has proved to be! • An old rent office purchased and converted into a hub for different services, and now with a new Police Station attached to ensure we keep a Police presence. (You have no idea how challenging my meetings were with their top brass!) • The best cemetery for miles around. • A top-class multi-use games area on the Tommy Simpson Field. • Along the way we also acquired some replacement and some extra bus shelters; unfortunately a couple are regularly vandalised by local idiots. • A council house building programme to replace Airey houses is in progress, some people have now moved into their new homes. • Two supermarkets, a filling station and a new store have appeared. • New homes are being built on Scrooby Road, preparatory work has started for further houses at the top of Bawtry Road. • There is obvious growth and expansion on our industrial sites. And for the future:• Development of the Governmentdesignated Housing Zone on the colliery site. PLUS Harworth South: Industrial and Logistics Park The company responsible for this proposed £200m major industrial development issued a press release in July, just as they
were about to submit a planning application to Bassetlaw District Council. Yes, I was contacted by the local press and yes, I was interviewed at home by BBC Radio Sheffield and TraxFM. Noticeably, I discovered that what surprised and greatly interested the media was the level of support for this proposal from the people living in our Town; often such developments meet strong opposition from local populations. I was able to explain that in Harworth and Bircotes we have a proud work history, we are used to industry and not afraid of getting our hands dirty, and previously we were a thriving community with three major employers who later sadly disappeared over just one decade – and we all saw the effects of that! New industrial development means jobs, an improved local economy, and a future for our young people – hence this is something we welcome. I am now used to the comment from planners and developers: “Harworth and Bircotes is different”. My usual reply is: “Of course it is, we are unique!”……and we are. We know things won’t happen overnight, and no doubt there will be a few glitches along the way and fresh problems to solve, but I am aware that external
companies and organisations are showing a growing interest in Harworth and Bircotes- so at last we now seem to be firmly on the map, folks. STYRRUP ROAD, COMMON LANE AND THE RUMOUR MILL You all know that A1 is currently engaged in a programme of Airey House demolition/building new homes on Smith Square and then Thompson Avenue. However, when it comes to the demolition of those Airey Houses on Common Lane and Styrrup Road that are owned by B.D.C. (not all are), I can assure you that there are no plans to build an estate of council houses reserved for East European immigrants on that site - what nonsense!! How do I know this? Because I have been involved right from the start in this house building venture, and attend all meetings related to it; plus, as the Cabinet Member for Finance I am certainly aware of all development proposals at B.D.C. The number of Airey Houses in Harworth that were owned by B.D.C., including Smith Square, Thompson Avenue and Common Lane/Styrrup Road, totalled 43. New houses/flats/bungalows built on Smith Square, Thompson Avenue and the field behind them will total 71; this means there will be 28 extra new homes

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED appearing from the scheme. If you want to know the facts, just ask me – ring me or meet me, I am happy to share information with you – anything other than you having to listen to stupid, untrue rumours. TEMPORARY NURSERY PROVISION Notts. County Council have approached Sure Start and the Town Council to help out with nursery provision from September to December, and of course we both said ‘Yes’. Notts. County planned to provide a temporary porta-cabin-type structure on the field opposite Thoresby Close to replace the nursery previously sited at Serlby Park Academy, but this can’t be done by early September. Sure Start have the skills, Town Council has the space, and we both feel we have a moral duty towards the nursery/children who use it. WARNING, PLEASE FOLLOW THE COUNTRY CODE A local farmer rang me about a couple of fields behind All Saints Church which he uses to graze cattle. Dog walkers, please keep your dog on a lead if anywhere near them; parents, please educate your children about the danger of approaching them. Cows who have calves can suddenly become aggressive if alarmed by a dog or a child appearing in their field; every year someone in Britain gets trampled by a distressed cow or angry bull …. Please, don’t let it happen in Harworth. COMMON LANE AND TICKHILL ROAD: similarly, dog walkers should respect land around Common Lane/ off Tickhill Road that doesn’t have a right of way. If a farmer blocks the entrance to a field, there is a reason. A field left to grass is usually cut and used as fodder for cattle; a field full of dog
faeces contaminates the grass and if baled and later given to beasts is extremely toxic. As any knowledgeable rambler will tell you, taking short cuts across any field is not your prerogative, you are trespassing, and you may well be harming the environment. Council has provided a dog bin on Common Lane: the message is pick it up and bin it, keep to the acknowledged right of way. SECURITY TO REAR OF SHOP PREMISES, SCROOBY ROAD Bassetlaw District Council has written to the tenants of those shops behind which is a service road, accessed at the top of Grosvenor Road. This is a favourite spot for fly tippers – freezers, mattresses and three piece suites appear there overnight; obviously such big items are transported there, not carried on foot. The intention is to fit security gates at the entrance point off Grosvenor Road; B.D.C. will pay for the gates, maintenance after the first year will fall to H&B Town Council. This is a cost to you, the tax payer, but long term it will be cheaper than the cost of continually collecting and disposing of large items discarded by feckless members of our community who find it acceptable to practise such antisocial behaviour. AN UPDATE The Cemetery has just six grave plots left, though plenty of cremation sites; there is a strong likelihood that Council will open the New Cemetery in the next 12 months. Did you know that nationally 70% of people now opt for cremation? SALE OF CEMETERY LODGE: the sale of the property has now been completed. Searching for legal documents going back as far as 1974 did cause some delay, as did waiting for utility companies to
separate the electric and water supplies for the house from the cemetery. A Portaloo will be in situ in the cemetery, next to the brick shelter; this is because the terms of the above sale requires the non-use of the current attached toilet. Mystery in the Cemetery: People who regularly visit the cemetery and leave flowers on the grave of a loved one have been puzzled recently to find on their next visit that the petals but not the stalks have disappeared. I can tell you that rabbits are responsible, and they seem especially fond of chrysanthemums. ROADWORKS: I have to thank everyone using Scrooby Road for your patience in July whilst new cables were laid to the sub-station, and traffic lights were yet again in operation. Highways are pretty good at notifying Council in advance of any roadworks; other companies are not. By the time you read this, Severn Trent Water will have used temporary traffic signals near electricity sub-station No. 11, and Northern Power Grid will have done the same at the junction with Waterslack Road, in order to install a new connection THE MINERS MEMORIAL: One issue that arose was about those 7 men who died at Harworth Colliery, but of natural causes. Council took the decision to have an extra attachment to the main memorial, thus these men will also be acknowledged and remembered. The list is now with Keith Ashton, stonemason, who must be heartily sick of me making changes. The design has been agreed, (no simple job accommodating 80 names) and Keith is awaiting delivery of the stone. Although this is proving to be a rather costly memorial, I have to tell you that Keith Ashton –
originally a Bircotes lad – refuses to charge for labour. Thank you, Keith. AN ICON FOR HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES, A GATEWAY INTO BASSETLAW? We all know the winding tower will be demolished (no, I don’t know when); we all know that people can see it for miles around, especially those using the A1/M – it has become a well-known icon. Thinking about not only our community, but something that says to travellers ‘you are entering/leaving Bassetlaw’, what replacement icon would you choose that could be viewed from the motorway? I’m not suggesting another ‘Angel of the North,’- but then again……??? TO MAKE YOU SMILE One day on holiday with a friend in Majorca, we entered a busy bar; I found an empty table whilst said friend went to get the drinks. In came a party of Brits who grabbed the next table – their accent told me they came from Rotherham. Realising they were two chairs short, one of the men approached me: “Excuse me, but are these chairs spare?” he asked, pointing at my table. “Pardon, monsieur?” I replied, in my best French accent and looking puzzled. This went on for several minutes – me using my school French of many years ago and he getting more exasperated as his friends watched his apparent failure to make me understand. Finally, typically British, speaking slowly and very loudly, he asked: “DO-YOU-SPEAK-ENGLISH?” “Of course I do, I come from Donny” I replied, grinning. His face was a picture of disbelief, and the screams of laughter from his colleagues told me I didn’t need to make a hasty exit. And yes, I happily let him take the chairs.
