Welcome to

the November 2015 edition

Your Local Independent Travel Agent with over 25 years experience

How sad would be November if we didn’t have knowledge of the Spring? Edwin Way Teale The year is racing by, Halloween is upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner! I have spent several days in October accompanying my son as he visits University Open Days. It has brought back many happy memories of my own time at University. Many aspects of campuses remain the same as they were in the 90’s although it has been apparent everywhere we have been, that huge investment has been made in buildings and facilities – not least the student accommodation, where ensuites are now the expected norm! I mentioned last month that we had been shortlisted for four business awards at the 2015 National Magazine Publisher’s Awards. If you follow our facebook page you will already know that I was thrilled to come home with 2 awards that night. Our newly redesigned website won ‘Best Website’ and the cartoon video that features on the website also won an award in the ‘Best Promotional Video’ category. It is lovely to receive some recognition within the industry that we are doing something right, and spending time with so many other fabulous magazine producers, many of whom have become my friends is one of the highlights of my working year. The December issue will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th November. The December magazines always contain the most community content of the year, and as levels of submissions are already at a record high, I must urge you to get your items to me on time, so that I can ensure that sufficient space is available for everything. This does apply to advertising bookings too!

A Message for Everyone Interested in the Piano Learning how to play the piano can be a very lonely process, taking years of dedicated study.

All types of music will be welcome (Classics, Modern, Popular, Folk and Jazz).

Often when progress is made and a repertoire is beginning to develop, a pianist finds it difficult to perform in front of any type of audience because of nerves and lack of confidence.

The essential message is that it is the members who perform and present the music.

We propose to start a club to provide a small friendly group of people of all ages, with an interest in the piano, to encourage and support performance, and a venue at which pianists of all levels can meet people with a similar interest. Everyone is welcome, it does not matter if you are unable to read music, have passed a Grade 1 exam or hold a Diploma or Degree in Music, or simply have no interest in gaining qualifications and just like to play the piano or keyboard.

We also hope to have a social aspect to the club, and to arrange club visits to various venues, possibly to play some music at hotels, piano manufacturers, restorers and large retailers. The Club membership will play a major role in determine the activities and interests of the piano club, and when, where and how often we meet. So it is important that you attend this first meeting and have your say if you are able to. If you can’t or haven’t received your magazine in time, then don’t worry simply contact David Kay on 01302 538537 for more information and to register your interest.

Members may elect not to play but just to listen and provide moral support. However, the number of members wishing to play will be strictly limited to ensure all have an adequate opportunity to play.

Please come and join us at the first meeting of our club: 7:45pm on Tuesday 27th OCTOBER 2015 At St Wilfrid’s Church, Church Lane, Cantley T

Difficult Journeys Welcome back for our monthly chat & brew together. Loads of things have come up over the months (and I guess years now) and we have walked some difficult journeys, some odd ones and maybe even a few humorous ones. Hey, hasn’t the autumn weather been amazing? I was just mentioning to Lisa that I think the colour change on the trees have been a bit more dramatic this year. I have had a good friend and bike riding companion move from Rossington just a few weeks ago that I have known nearly the entire time we have been here. I was surprised how difficult that was. We tried to take a weekly ride down the back side of Bessacarr to Lakeside, grab a coffee, discuss (and come up with a solution) to the world’s problems and ride back. Times and days varied but I became rather fond of those times together. On the last one, he said, “this will be the very last bike ride we do

... ever”. That had quite an impact. It just seemed so ... final. Since that time with him and his wife moving to Shrewsbury, I starting thinking about finishing chapters in my life. It is full of ‘em. Some were “big”. Finishing up in my work as an electronics engineer and handing in my security clearance was a tough one. Saying goodbye to friends and family in the States and entering uncharted waters in England was another. Certainly saying “see ya later” to Mum was one of those things I never thought I would have to experience. Mum will ALWAYS be there, or so I thought. However even the closing of smaller chapters have had an impact ... my friend’s move ... an animal’s death ... a daughter’s completion of uni ... our last child’s move into high school. Each of these come with their own associated emotions and challenges. You see, I find myself a creature of habit. Change comes hard for me. Maybe it does for you too. But there is something interesting about books and chapters. When you finish a chapter, turn the page

and ... bang! There is another chapter. It won’t be the same chapter as you just finished. If it was, what would be the point in reading? It will be a different chapter ... an additional part of the story ... maybe some new characters, and certainly fresh experiences. Oddly enough, the husband of a relatively new family at church has a bike and expressed interest in riding. We have done a few trips. We don’t go to Thornton’s for a coffee but he showed me the Subway down at Lakeside has a fab view and is very relaxing. Our daughter and her hubby have moved back to Rossington and we get to see them quite often. And I will get to see Mum in heaven on day. Pinching a quote from Dr. Seuss ... “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. For whatever chapter you may be finishing ... cry, maybe grieve but smile because it did happen. Remember the next chapter is just a page away. And as always, the kettle is on and the door is open. See you next month!

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Another busy month dealing with some new concerns from residents along with ongoing issues some of which are taking a long time to get sorted to the satisfaction of all residents involved and because of the number of different organisations who need to be involved. It’s also been a month when I have found out about proposals for a new bus route which connects the village to more places in Doncaster, which is good news for Rossington – details will be in the December magazine. Sometimes, just finding out who owns or has responsibility for sorting something out can take a long time, before then asking that organisation to deal with the problem. With the announcement that the Recycoal project had run into difficulties I have had concerned residents contacting me about ensuring the project will be finished so I have been speaking to various DMBC departments to ensure this happens.

Rossington Market I have mentioned the market a number of times in my updates and as a regular visitor it is great to see more stalls and a bigger range of items been sold as well as the number of visitors increasing, this being helped by the Rossington Market Facebook page. Therefore it was bad news last week when I received a phone call from DMBC markets team updating me on the vandalism that is occurring which is not only costing DMBC money to repair the damage but could be a danger to stall holders and therefore electricity has had to be cut off. South Yorkshire Police are trying to stop the damage happening, but If anyone does have any information and they don’t want to talk to South Yorkshire Police you can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Skate Park Following discussions at my youth surgery, I met with DMBCs playground team to see what safety improvements could be made to the skate park, which they are looking into getting sorted, but whilst we were there we also looked at the damage that has been caused to the shelter; seats burnt, parts removed general vandalism making the structure unstable. We know that the damage is caused by a small number of people who congregate there but unfortunately they are spoiling it for the many young people who just want to meet their friends and go on the skate park. I will be meeting with the youth club so that decisions that are made to the seating area are discussed with young people first.

Halloween and Bonfire Night Right up our Street’s Halloween Handmade Parade is taking place on 31 October. Already around the village are the spider’s webs and banners advertising what is going to be a unique event that is coming to the village. Everyone can get involved in making things for the parade, or by coming along to watch and afterwards there is a family disco at Miners Welfare. Another free event in the village will be the annual 5th November firework display at the Miners Welfare from 4-9pm with free entry, rides, and food stalls organised by Rossington Parish Council and from 6pm there is a family

disco in the Miners Welfare. As you know, Rossington is now part of the same ward as Bawtry and Austerfield and it is only Rossington that will be having a firework display which is due to the commitment and hard work of the Parish Council which is great for the village.

Speeding parking and accidents Improvements are being made to the Central Drive crossroads to improve safety as well as enhancements and improvements on Littleworth Lane to reduce speeding. Also the 20mph advisory limit on Pheasant Bank will be in place in the near future. The issue of police cars parking outside the police station is something that residents raise, due to impact that this has on traffic flow. Some residents say that this is slowing down speeding vehicles so it is a good thing; whilst other residents are concerned about visibility when pulling out of side roads. I am in contact with the South Yorkshire Police Inspector almost on a weekly basis about this and they do limit the amount of time the police vehicles are parked up but they do not have anywhere else to park these vehicles. I have raised residents’ concerns with our Highways Department who have limited options about what could be done, other than imposing parking restrictions on everyone which would not be something that the majority of residents would support.

How to Contact Me I have 2 surgeries in the village – just drop in any time, but the rest of the month, just contact me on the numbers below – a text is fine and I can call you back or email me if you prefer. Last Tuesday of every month – 3.15 – 4.45pm at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street 2nd Friday of every month – 4.45 – 5.30 at Miners Welfare and then from 6 – 6.30pm at Rossington Youth Club Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB : Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Best wishes

ZZZzzzzzzz… Following on from last month’s article on mattresses, here’s what you need to know about pillows to add the final ingredient for a good night’s sleep…

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

The purpose of a pillow is to keep your head, neck and spine in line. The thickness of your ideal pillow will depend on the size of your frame and the position you sleep in. If you sleep on your back you will only need a slim pillow just to prevent your head and neck from tipping back. Side sleepers will need a thicker pillow to fill the space between your shoulder and the side of your head. The bigger your frame, the larger this gap will be. Sleeping on your tummy is best avoided as it is impossible to keep your head and neck in a neutral position. It’s actually quite difficult for us to accurately determine the position of different body parts so the best way to judge a pillow is to adopt your usual sleep position and then ask someone else to look and see if your head, neck and spine are still in line. Pillows generally last 3-5 years, but there is a quick test to see if it’s still up to the job. Fold a feather pillow in half, squeezing out all the air. When you let go, it should spring back into shape. Fold synthetic pillows in half and place a small weight on it (decent paperback or a trainer). The pillow should fling off the weight as it springs back to shape! Sleep well!

Tickhill & District Lions Club This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 7th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive, with the evening organised jointly by our Lions Club and the Cricket Club. Entry is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets with all the proceeds going towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with the fireworks let off in 2 sessions, the first starting at 6pm. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers, and with the cricket club

bar open, the bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. There will be a barbecue selling locally supplied burgers and sausages. Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with a wide range of super prizes on offer. Tickets will be available on our stall at the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 26th November and a number of retail outlets round the district. The draw will take place on Tuesday 15th December, by which time the Christmas float will have transported Santa round Harworth & Bircotes and will have started on his visits to Rossington. Make sure you don’t miss him. A full list of float dates and start times will appear in next month’s magazine. T

Garden Bonfires November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn

plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke.

Bonfire Safety Check-list • Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. • Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. • Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy—just in case • Don’t leave the fire unattended. • Keep small children and pets out of the way. • Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting.

Trading Wings for Wheels The 2008(Bawtry) Squadron Air Cadets were privileged to be asked to take part and assist with the Respect Bawtry Charity Car Rally 2015. Respect Bawtry is a charitable drivers group who aim to raise money through using their cars for Respect Carers Awards (www.carerawards.blogspot.com). The Cadets helped marshal drivers and passengers as they made their way up and around the Respect Green Burial Park. The day was kicked off in style as the Cadets stood to attention as War Veteran and fundraiser Ben Parkinson had the first ride of the day. The Cadets then got the chance to be passengers in some of the fantastic classic, vintage, retro and high performance vehicles which where on offer that day. The Cadets themselves also showed their abilities and performed a drill to onlookers just before the Rally started. They then continued their day by promoting and demonstrating what the Air Cadets can offer young people. There was also a flying simulator which attracted lots of youngsters who all seem to dream of flying, especially as there was a Vulcan available, very similar to the one that resides at Finningley. We will also be present and assisting with the Tickhill Grand Prix on September 20th which will have

taken place by the time you read this article. If you think you’d make a great Cadet and are aged over 12yrs, visit our website www.2008aircadets.org.uk Drop us an Email at 2008@aircadets.org or call 01302 711783 on our Parade nights Weds and Fri from 6.45pm-9.15pm T

Remembrance and Memorials

Dearr Friends, November is a month of memorials and remembrance. It includes All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day, and Remembrance Day, among others. Memorials help us to connect with our past. Remembering the past can help us or haunt us. It depends on what part of the past comes into our memory and how we have lived with it. Some of the memories can be very unpleasant and may need us to attend to them in order to move on with our lives. On the other hand, some memories encourage us and help us to rekindle the hope we have for the future. These memories mostly strengthen us in our endeavours. In my local dialect, the month of November is called ‘ ’ (pronounced ‘o-ba-re-fiw’), meaning ‘a life of beauty’. Talking about lives of beauty reminds us of people who have sacrificed their lives for our good. Such lives motivate most of us. In Christianity, we are encouraged to remember Jesus Christ, who died to save us from sin. As part of remembering Jesus’ death on the cross, Christians frequently meet to share the ‘Eucharist’. Other people call it the “Lord’s Supper” or ‘Holy Communion”. It is a time when we share bread and wine together. It is also a time when we are reminded of God’s love for the world. He loved us to the extent of sacrificing his son, Jesus Christ, for us. Moreover, the Lord’s Supper reminds us that each of us is united with God through his love. Hence, we are to love one another as God has loved us.

Talking of loving one another, I wonder if I can suggest that you make the following prayer yours. Bruce Prewer wrote it and it says: “God of Jesus and our God, mindful of all those choice souls who have gone on ahead of us, teach us to follow their example to the best of our ability: • to feed the poor in body or spirit, • to support and comfort the mourners and the repentant, • to encourage the meek and stand with them in crises, • to affirm those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, • to cherish and learn from the merciful, • to be humbled by, and stand with, the peacemakers”. This month, as you celebrate the events of remembrance and memorials, I wonder if you can take a moment and pause to reflect on how the examples of those who have gone before us can encourage you to love another person. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely, Rev. Rossington Parish Council Welcome to this month’s Parish Council News, the first of the completed surveys have been received and the general view is that the Village is looking untidy with lots of litter about and as a result of this I will be meeting DMBC’s Head of Street Scene to discuss how best to tackle this. All this litter, waste, etc. that is dumped doesn’t arrive by magic but is the actions of a small minority we can all help by disposing of it in the proper way, it’s our Village lets help to keep it clean and tidy! At the Parish Council meeting on the 8th of September in the public participation session the lack of proper ‘Dropped Kerbs’ was discussed with the view taken that this should be given priority to provide access to all areas for wheelchair, pushchairs, prams, etc. The Parish Council working together with the 3 Ward Members have provided DMBC with a list of the most badly affected areas to be completed first with a request to DMBC to carry out a survey to determine further locations. Once again your support is required if you know of any place that would benefit from the installation of a dropped kerb please let us know. We have recently completed the Bankwood Lane Allotments inspection and I am pleased to report the general standard of upkeep is very high with only a few neglected plots, we have a long list of people who want Allotments and the plots that are not being used correctly will be reallocated. Rents for the allotments are due in November and I am pleased to say they will remain the same as last year with no increase. SANTA DASH, Tickhill

Children’s disability charity, Brainwave, is organising a 5k Santa Dash taking place on the morning of Saturday 5th December 2015 from Tickhill Cricket Club. As a fun run, it is not a timed event and runners of all abilities (including walkers) are welcome to take part. The Santa Dash is the first fundraising event that Brainwave has undertaken in Yorkshire. Brainwave helps children living with disabilities and special needs to achieve greater independence. The children have a range of conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, genetic disorders and developmental delay. All proceeds raised from the event will support local children. Amelia Poppy , is aged two and lives in Tickhill. She lives with a genetic condition known as Koolen de Vries Syndrome. Brainwave has developed an exercise programme tailored for Amelia. According to mum, Claire, “Amelia has benefited greatly from the brainwave programme; she has made amazing progress with her mobility, communication skills and overall development. Through attending Brainwave we, as her parents, felt assured that Amelia was receiving the right therapy to optimise her potential.” Richard Clarke of Brainwave enthused about the event, “The Santa Dash will be brilliant fun. There will be Christmas music as people gather for the run. There will be a special appearance by the ‘real Santa’ to hand medals to all the runners. Afterwards there will be refreshments in the Cricket Club. It is a brilliant way to help local children, like Amelia.” Runner registration is £15 per adult and £10 per child (up to 13). Santa Suits and runner medals will be provided to all participants. Team packages are also available for local businesses to take part. Runner registration forms are available at KSM Dry Cleaners & Card Shop in Tickhill, and also available online via the Charity website: http://www.brainwave.org.uk/yorkshire-santa-dash/ T
