Welcome to

the December 2015 edition He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.

Roy L. Smith The Christmas issue already and the last magazine of 2015. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction! Once again I am totally disorganised, not a present has been bought, nor a card written, and although I bought my Christmas cards back in August, I have no idea where I put them! Never mind it will all get done, it always does. As always I will be trying to support my local shops in the run up to Christmas. Details of many such shops and services can be found within these pages and I am sure that all of them appreciate you considering local companies not just at Christmas but all through the year. Finding ways of diverting even just a tiny bit of your spend to Independents is an excellent way of ensuring that our local communities retain their individuality and that we have a large choice of local shops and services for years to come. I am looking forward to relaxing and spending some quality time with my family for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I am very lucky that I am able to do this. I know that there are a great many people who will be working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services. The January 2016 issue will be delivered to you late December. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 10th December. December is the month that I squeeze a month’s work into 3 weeks while also preparing for Christmas and my calendar for December is already filling up with extra social events and annual commitments, so once again I do ask that you endeavour to get your items to me on time.

Worksop Branch Of The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust Taylors Makes a Difference for local Scout group

Tuesday 15th December 2015 - Christmas quiz A fun evening of nature related quizzes and games . A buffet supper will be provided . Hope you can join us for a little festive spirit .

Taylor’s of Tickhill donated £300 to our local Scout group last month. The store donated the money to the Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit through Nisa’s Making a Difference Locally charity, and presented the cheque at the Scout and Guide headquarters last month.

Our Christmas evening is always a lot of fun. Whether you come alone, with a partner or friends there will be a warm welcome and a chance to test your nature knowledge in a not too serious way.

The donation will be used towards the purchase of an overhead projector for the club, and is the third donation the store has made to the Scouts and Guides in Tickhill to date.

This year we are asking you to do a bit of Blue Peter and bring a little creation of your own in the form of a table center piece. A few sprigs of holly some strategically placed pine cones, glittered toilet rolls all held together with some sticky back plastic may just get you first place.

Making A Difference Locally (or MADL) is a registered charity that raises money from customers purchasing items from Nisa’s ownlabel Heritage range and a number of branded products in store. A percentage of the sale cost of these items then goes into a virtual fund to be donated to local charities and good causes of the member’s choice. Store owner, Christopher Taylor also joined the MADL Board of Trustees last month. He said of the store’s donation: “We are delighted to make donations to this worthy local good cause, as the Leaders are all volunteers and give their time freely to a large group of young people in the village. We have been very keen to make donations as often as possible to local good causes since MADL started. Purchasing expensive items of equipment is difficult for the Guides and Scouts, as they receive no income other than what they can raise in subscriptions and donations.” To support the work of Making A Difference Locally and help good causes in the area, look out for Making A Difference Locally promotions in-store. TMVC Vulcan report

THE SHEFFIELD SINGERS

On Friday 29th October 2015, Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir had the honour of performing at Hangar 3, Robin Hood Airport (the home of the only airworthy Vulcan bomber) in association with “Vulcan to the Sky Trust”.

At 7.30pm on Thursday 17 December 2015 The Sheffield Singers return to start your Christmas with our usual feast of music and readings.

Standing in front of XH558 “Spirit of Great Britain” (whose final flight was recorded two days earlier), amongst members of Mexborough, Thorne and Rossington Male Voice Choirs and alongside members of Doncaster Ladies Choir, members were proud to perform with the joint male voices singing 11 items, the ladies singing six items along with two items performed jointly with male and female choirs. The concert was concluded with a “Last Night of the Proms” section involving the joint choirs and the audience of 400. Our conductors for the evening were Gwyneth Platts and Allen Mason and we were accompanied by Elizabeth Cooke, Geoffrey Cox, Neil Platt, Delyse Rockliff and Janet Skinner. The event was compered by Peter Hannam. Members and followers of the choirs were treated to the history of the Avro Vulcan bombers, which despite having a very long service life were only used in anger once, during the Falklands War. At that time they were brought out of recent retirement and used to bomb the runway at Port Stanley, making it inoperable to the Argentine forces. Also, during the interval and after the conclusion of the concert everyone was given the opportunity to get a close up view of the aircraft. Our sincere thanks go to the “Vulcan to the Sky Trust” for their cooperation in hosting this concert which was brought about following the Music Workshop with James Sills, organised by ourselves in March of this year. Having invited other local male voices to join with us in the workshop it was decided to arrange a joint concert of the choirs involved and also involve Doncaster Ladies Choir. What a privilege it was to line up in front of the mighty aircraft, especially as she has just been retired from flying so recently. Our apologies go to any of our supporters who were unable to obtain tickets for this event, but numbers had to be restricted and demand was high, including from members of the Trust. We will be kept extremely busy over the coming Christmas period. The choir will hold their Christmas Concert on Saturday 5th December at Tickhill Methodist Church commencing at 7.30pm, tickets are available – get yours now! We will also be performing at Doncaster Golf Club on Saturday 12th December (private function), the Nine Lessons and Carols service at Bassettlaw Hospital Chapel at 7.00pm on Wednesday 16th December and singing carols at Doncaster Tesco Extra on Saturday 19th December from 10.00am to 12.00noon. Prospective new members are always welcome to join us at our practice sessions on Monday evenings in the Schoolroom, Tickhill Methodist Church. No experience is necessary, ability to read music is optional. Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. T

Rachel Copley will be at the helm and Leeds musician, Daniel Gordon, will accompany us on the organ as well as treat us to some solo playing. We are delighted to welcome back one of our former Members, Sue Morton, who will entertain us with seasonal readings. At the interval we will be warmed up with wine and mince pies, dispensed by our usual sommeliers Patrick Andrews and his invaluable team, to whom we are most grateful. Any profits from the concert will be donated to "Bloodwise", a charity which researches to eliminate over 130 blood cancers. Followers of The Sheffield Singers (most of whom are members of Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus) will be delighted to know that Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus has a new CD of Christmas music, "Awake, Arise!". It contains many of the carols you have enjoyed at our Tickhill concerts including the spine tingling "O Holy Night" arranged by our remarkable music director, Darius Battiwalla. The world famous Black Dyke Band also features on the CD. It will be on sale at the concert for £12.99 and will make a lovely Christmas gift. JANET BOWER. T

TIS THE SEASON TO GO SKIING!... There can be a seasonal slant to the work of a Physiotherapist and the winter months see an influx of skiing related issues. But hitting the slopes doesn’t have to lead to trouble. Here are some tips for a happy trip… Get SKI fit Even if you are usually fit, it’s important to recognise that you still probably only ski for 1 or 2 weeks a year and you will need to tweak your normal fitness routine accordingly. If your baseline fitness is poor, you really must address this 12 weeks before your trip.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Poor fitness leads to fatigue and fatigue leads to injury. Most skiing injuries occur after 3pm on the 3rd day of a trip – when fatigue reaches a peak.

Home Pride

You need to work on your cardiovascular fitness by doing exercises that increase your heart rate (running/cycling) and on your lower limb strength by doing squats/lunges/step ups.

Treat pre existing injuries If you have any pre existing complaints it is a good idea to deal with these before your holiday. Skiing is unlikely to help! Equipment Don’t borrow ski gear – it isn’t tailored specifically to you and could well be past it’s best! Skiing holidays really aren’t the best place for a booze up. Alcohol affects your ability to assess risk accurately and leads to dehydration making it difficult for tissues to function and recover properly.

Tickhill Music Society Tickhill Music - October Concert

Society Friday, 11th December 2015 at 8.00 p.m. St. Mary’s Primary School Dodici Corde Guitar Duo The Golden Age of the Guitar Seasonal music from the early Romantic repertoire

Nick Pritchard (right) and Ian Tindale (left) This splendid recital was given by the tenor Nick Pritchard ably supported by Ian Tindale at the piano. They made an excellent team. The singer had a pleasing manner, a commanding stage presence and a beautifully rich tenor voice. The programme was shrewdly chosen with a mixture of German lieder and English songs. It began with three Schubert songs: the tuneful and rippling Die Forelle (the Trout), the declamatory hymn to the countryside at dusk, Abendrot, and Ganymed, a setting of a Goethe Poem.

Fees Subscription members for 8 concerts £55* Concession members for 8 concerts £50* Subscription members for any 4 concerts £30 *Pro rata dependent upon joining date Ordinary members pay no membership fee but £10 admission for each of the eight concerts. Non-members: admission £10 for each event at the door. Accompanied children (under 16) and students (16-19) are admitted free of charge. Subscription and Ordinary Members receive regular copies of the Society’s newsletter. T

The six songs by George Butterworth (1885 1916) to words by A E Housman were specifically asked for by our Concert Secretary, Adrian Hattrell, who must surely have been pleased with their presentation here. The tribute to the cherry tree wearing white for Eastertide to the final poignant "Is my team ploughing?" where the ghostly wraith questions his friend about his girlfriend, requiring the singer to adopt two different voice styles, were the ‘bookends’ to a set of six Butterworth songs. The first work after the Interval introduced a more astringent note with the first of Benjamin Britten’s Canticles (My beloved is mine). Then it was back to the Romantic tradition with settings by Robert Schumann of a clutch of nine Goethe verses. The enthusiastic applause showed how much this concert had been greatly enjoyed and it prompted a short encore. More sprightly Benjamin Britten, ending appropriately with the words ‘If you want any more you must sing it yourself! Another memorable concert from Tickhill Music Society! Philip Mottram. T 16

Christmas Lost for words!

Dearr Friends, December is a month of celebrations that are centred on Christmas and New Year. As much as the celebrations continue into the night and sometimes for days, I wonder if we sometimes find time to reflect on the reason(s) for these celebrations. My local dialect has named December ‘Mumu’ which can be translated as ‘dumb’. In other words, the events that bring reasons for the celebrations may amaze us to the extent that we may be lost for words or ‘dumb’ for hours or even days. Lost for words? Yes! Imagine you being Mary, the mother of Jesus. How would you have treated the news of the birth of your firstborn from an angel you have never seen or met? What about Joseph? An innocent bachelor who only wanted to marry the girl he loved but had to be dragged into the mystery of the virgin birth? Lost for words? Yes! If you were the innkeeper, how would you feel after realising that the couple you disregarded and handed them your sheep pen to sleep in, instead of a bed and breakfast room, was the couple God decided to use to bring the Saviour into the world? Lost for words? Yes! Imagine that you were a shepherd who had been written off by society and are only needed when it was time for the temple sacrifices. You are only important for the time when someone wants to buy your sheep or goat and sacrifice it at the temple. I wonder how you would have felt when an angel of God appeared to you in the bright sky on Christmas morning and asked you to hurry and visit the newly born babe, the Saviour of the world. Lost for words? Yes! If you were a wise man how would you have felt when you realised that upon all your wisdom and knowledge you needed the visit of God’s angel and a guiding star to lead you to the baby who had been born as Saviour of the world. 20

Tickhill Today

Lost for words? Yes, Herod was! Imagine how Herod felt when the wise men told him the news about the birth of the king of the world who will save us from our sins. I wonder how he would think about his authority in the province of Judea in the coming days or years. Lost for words? Yes, I am! I am lost for words because God loved me so much that he brought his only son into the world at Christmas to live and die for me. I wonder how you feel as well realising that the nativity plays, carol services and the celebrations are not all about shopping and parties but God sending his only son into the world to save you from sin. As part of the celebrations of Christmas, the church in your local community, which is always lost for words because of what God has done for this world, is putting up services and nativity plays in December to celebrate the mystery of Jesus’ birth. It is also celebrating the birth of a new year as we look forward to experiencing new things and growth in our lives in the coming year. I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you, as well as your family and friends, to look out on your local church notice boards and in the local magazines for where and when you can join in our celebrations. You are always welcome. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year celebration. God bless you. Yours sincerely,

community Some Cadets also had the pleasure of enjoying a Cadet Camp at RAF Valley a working RAF Base in Wales. They also had the fantastic first-hand experience of seeing the Red Arrows team arrive at the Base.

2008 (Bawtry) SQUADRON Our Cadets have been very busy during these past few months, having the chance to take part in several activities and events around the area and out of town. Some of our activities have included Swimming Competency testing which was held in October and a large group were able to take their Basic and Intermediate certificates which will allow them to be considered for more activities, competitions and camps involving water sports. There was also Shooting Training, which was also accessed by Cadets in September. Cadets were able to gain experience and a qualification in Rifle Handling as well as the thrill of shooting. And more of this is planned for the New Year.

Other Cadets took a week long Adventure Training Course which included abseiling, rock climbing, caving, kayaking and hill walking. These Cadets returned with a Bronze Award for Navigation as part of their activities. Of course November is the month of Remembrance for those who served in the War. The Cadets always play a large part in the dedication ceremony in Bawtry. They march through the Village and were present at Bawtry Methodist Church for a Service of Remembrance. They then proudly paraded to Bawtry Hall to lay wreathes at the Memorial and also at the site of the dedication Plaque of No1 Bomber Command to remember all those Airmen who served their country in the War. St Mary’s School St Marys Visit a Forest School We went on a coach on the way to forest school. When we got there we played games. We tried to cross a river by helping each other. We had a camp fire and the teacher told us some safety rules. Then it was dinner time. I had a tuna sandwich and baby bell and grapes and biscuit and when we finished we played more games. We did a treasure hunt and den building. We love St Mary’s. By Darcy Criddle Y2

Estfeld School–

Children in Need The pupils at Estfeld were very lucky when Pudsey Bear found the time to drop in at school recently. Pudsey of course, is very busy in November with Children in Need duties, but called into assembly to thank the pupils as he has heard all about their fundraising efforts in the past. Pudsey also found time to meet with the parents outside school at the end of the day, who were generous enough to donate to the charity.

lessons. The pupils in Key Stage 2 also took part in the “Question of Sport for Pudsey” quiz during lunchtime.

The following day our pupils came to school dressed as Superheroes, Sports Heroes or in their Pudsey gear and donated to Children in Need for the privilege. During the day there was a special assembly and Pudsey-themed

Thank you to everybody for their support. Thank you also to Richard Gratton and ASDA, for arranging for the visit from Pudsey Bear.

HMI Monitoring Report Mid November our second Serious Weaknesses Ofsted Monitoring report was published. It highlights the good progress we have made since the HMI’s first visit. It identifies significant strengths of the college and the positive impact of actions we have taken. I am pleased it talks of ‘higher expectations’, ‘greater ambition’ and that the ‘bar has been raised’. Classroom practice observed demonstrated clear evidence of the professional development undertaken. We are clearly moving forward at a pace. There are and will always be things we can improve on, even when we become outstanding. This positive report should give everyone confidence that our college is succeeding. I am pleased we have climbed one mountain; now on to the next! I would encourage you to read the report. You can find it on our website – in the Heads Blog.

Success! We are delighted to have achieved the Co-operative Identity Mark. This was awarded for the way in which our co-operative values are visible in the areas of Governance and Membership; Curriculum; Pedagogy; Staff Development and Community Engagement.

Wadworth School Christmas Events With Christmas fast approaching, this is a very hectic time in Wadworth Primary School and there are lots of activities to tell you about and lots of dates for your diary. There is the Christmas Fair, Key Stage 1 and Reception Nativity and following the success of last year’s visit to St John’s church, there is another KS2 carol service at the church. This year we are also organizing a Christingle at St John’s church involving all children. We hope you can join us for some or all of these events to get you in the mood for a very merry Christmas.

Tuesday 1st December – 1.30pm Christingle at St John’s church (children and selected helpers only)

Armistice Day Commemorations

Thursday 3rd December – 1.30pm selection of children singing at Braithwell

On Wednesday 11th November, Mrs Land led the Wadworth Primary School Armistice Day assembly. It was a very moving event and the children were reminded about the good work the British Legion does in uniting people across the country in remembering the soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the two World Wars. However, we also found out about the work they do for service children. The children watched a video which showed service children saying a goodbye before they all moved due to the closure of five military schools. The British legion supported these children settle into new homes in new locations and make new friends while providing someone to talk to. This allowed the children to see where their kind donation goes and to realise it’s not just for past soldiers who have died or injured but the British Legion continue to provide support today. During the assembly, the children were shown medals won by Mrs Land’s husband, a poppy from the Tower of London and they united in producing a poppy wreath of their own using templates created by drawing around their hand and cutting out a red hand. This wreath was produced during the assembly showing that Wadworth was united in remembrance.

There comes a time in many of our lives when the need for care in our old age becomes a reality. If you have assets exceeding £23,250 the cost of care will need to be met by yourself. For some, this means selling the family home. However, many people who are in this position are not aware that funding may be available for them.

Will the NHS pay for my care? If the need for care primarily is a health need, YES In these circumstances the NHS are obligated to meet the care costs of the individual in full. This funding is known as continuing healthcare, and is sometimes abbreviated to CHC funding.

How can I receive this funding? It is difficult to secure continuing healthcare. Providing this funding to individuals is incredibly expensive for the NHS, in the same way it is incredibly expensive to pay privately. As a result it is regularly the case that the NHS attempt to apply a higher bar to satisfy than is set out in law and in the Department of Health literature pertaining to continuing healthcare. Many people who should be receiving in full to meet the cost of their care are not. It is estimated there are 100,000 in the UK presently paying for care when these costs should be met by continuing healthcare.

What can I do to find out if I am eligible for this funding? At Guardian Continuing Healthcare we have a high success rate of securing continuing healthcare for our clients. If you or your relative is paying for care and you believe there is a health need, perhaps because they suffer from Parkinson’s disease, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, then contact an expert member of our team today to discuss your options and find out how we can assist.

community 2015 will be remembered for good and bad reasons. We have seen an increase in animals requiring help and re-homing for various reasons. This could be that family’s situations alter and they can no longer take care of their animals. Marriage breakups, people going into rented accommodation, losing their jobs when finances then become difficult. Also people going into hospital. All can contribute to the reasons why we are full to overflowing. However this is becoming really hard for us as we only have so much kennel space If you are considering adopting a family pet please consider your life style and the costs involved, obviously life changes and no-one knows what is around the corner. This is why for some people it is important to take out pet insurance. There are some good companies out there, but always check the small print, and always ask if the policy you are interested in is a life policy. At our Sanctuary we have some beautiful dogs, puppies, cats and kittens, various breeds and cross breeds all looking for their forever loving homes. Previously I talked about Roxy and Bruno the inseparable dogs that we needed to re-home together, well they have now found 2 special people to love and take care of them. Our staff were very emotional when they went to their new home together. We are told they are doing well and looking forward to their Christmas dinner. We have quite a few fundraising events going on over the December period. We will be in Doncaster town centre on the 5th and 20th December please come along and say hello. We love to listen to all the stories you have about your pets. We will have some of our residents with us, so we are hoping for dry days. We are also collecting outside Pets at Home over the North Bridge in December (if it’s cold we will be

Finding a forever home inside) the staff are always lovely and very welcoming. A big thank you to the lady that arranged a Pampered Chef Party for us, this was a huge success and a really fun night. There was lots of tasty food to sample and we raised money too which was a bonus. We hope everyone has a very special fun Christmas, and a big thank you to everyone that donates to our Sanctuary. If you would like to contribute to help keep our Sanctuary open please just look at the website on the first page just click donate, every penny is greatly appreciated. Or if you would like to pop extra black bags, wash powder or washing up liquid in your trolley when you are shopping these are the things we use the most off. It takes £600 per day to stay open and our vets bills for a year are in excess of £40,000 unbelievable I know but these are the facts. Can I say a big thank you to our Managers, kennel staff and volunteers that give up most of their Christmas to make sure all our dogs and cats are fed and enjoy their Christmas too. All it takes now is to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Bye for now

She is a little cat with a huge personality. Extremely affectionate but with a naughty streak ! She loves to play and is always purring round your feet for a fuss or a game. Unfortunately she doesn’t like to share and wouldn’t tolerate another cat or a dog in her new home. If you would like a cat that’s loving but with bags of character then look no further. Here she is !!!!!

They have lived a very happy life with their owners and existing cat, Lucy. Unfortunately their Mum has had an accident which means that she is unable to care for them any more. It was a heartbreaking decision but one that was best for the boys and Lucy. Eric and Ernie are very close so a home together is essential. It would be a dream come true if they could all go together. Could you offer these guys the home they deserve?

Patient Participation Group RGERY OF THE TICKHILL AND COLLIERY SU th and healthcare.) r heal

(Aiming to help you, to be in control of you

It’s been a very busy year, full and highs and lows. We have held two Health Information Events had a stall at the Tickhill Gala, hosted a Dementia Friends information session and been a presence at the flu clinic where information leaflets were handed out.

Initial feedback from CQC regarding the practice was good but at the time of writing the report is not yet finalised. We will let you have more information as it becomes available. Everyone on The PPG wishes all readers a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.

Jan Hart As ever you can contact us via the comment box in either surgery or by email at :-tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com T

As patients we have all mourned the death of Dr. Cook (retired) and Dr. Sheehan and seen Dr. Saunders take retirement from partnership of The Practice. We also welcomed Dr. De Silva to the practice when he started in August. In October The Practice was inspected by The Care Quality Commission (CQC), some of you will have seen the advanced notice of the inspection on The Practice Website. Doctors, other Practice staff and in particular The Practice Manager were questioned, systems were checked and input by patients was welcomed; with patients during the run up, and on the day of the inspection given the opportunity to make written comment about the practice and the care they receive. Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out a response form. The chair and secretary of the PPG were questioned about the work of the PPG, their links with the practice and how they reach out to the rest of the patients. 46

Season for soup

by Feast of Bawtry

Butternut squash soup with crispy sage leaves (Gluten Free) As autumn is fading and winter is approaching we see a distinct change in our customers eating habits! A sandwich for lunch just won’t cut it anymore, everybody wants something warm and comforting....everybody wants soup! This is a wonderful time of year for seasonal vegetables which make the most delicious soups. At little cost and with minimal effort soups are low fat, low calorie option for stuffing our bodies with those vitamins and minerals we need to see us through the long winter nights. Try the recipe for our butternut squash and sage soup, it is simply devine. Warming and flavoursome

you can make a batch and if there is any leftover you can use a good quality plastic container, which is clearly labelled with the date and contents, and freeze it. Butternut squash are a favourite of ours. They can be added to stews, pasta, risotto, soups and curries. To ensure your squash is ripe and ready to use select one which is firm to the touch. If stored in a cool but not refrigerated place, they will keep for up to two months at a time. When scraping the seeds from the squash save them and lightly toast them in the oven for a delicious snack. Add salt or cajun spice if you prefer a little flavour. Mums tip...Butternut squash, cooked plainly makes a great weaning food for babies.

You will need... 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion 1 garlic clove 1 butternut squash (approx 1 kg) desseded and chopped 3 tbsp dry sherry (not essential...don’t panic!) 500ml vegetable stock (Gluten Free if necessary) 1 tsp chopped sage A handful of small whole sage leaves

1

Heat the oil in a large pan and fry your chopped onions for approximately 5 minutes or until soft

2

Add your garlic and squash and cook for 5 more minutes

3 4

A hand blender or food processor

50

Tickhill Today

Pour in the stock and the sherry (if you have it) add in the chopped sage and place the lid on the pan, leave to simmer for 20 minutes or until the squash is tender. Using a hand blender blitz until the mixture is completely smooth.

method

5

Add boiling water and blitz again if you need to thin the soup a little.

6

Cover the base of a small pan with oil and heat. Drop the sage leaves into the oil and fry until crispy. Cook them in small batches, removing each one to drain on kitchen paper. These can be made in advance if you require and will keep crisp for several hours. To serve ensure the soup is piping hot and ladle into bowls, arranging the sage leaves on top and seasoning with black pepper

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Which Christmas Tree? When we were kids my brother christened our rather sorry old artificial tree the Silver Lurch, on account of its colour and list. Artificial trees have improved enormously since then but most gardeners do prefer the real thing. There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year. Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best? Well there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs. The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines. Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties. Firs are the best choice for a British Christmas. If you want the best, and you can find one, plump for Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open

branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium. The Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) runs the Noble Fir a close second. It is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemon-scented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out. Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! A toppled six foot tree, a couple of gallons of water and a hundred or so baubles make a seriously large For true eco-friendliness mess...I know buy British-grown trees. this to be true Most councils offer a Christmas because several tree shredding service. The Christmases shreddings are then composted. ago I was the person clearing Artificial trees are generally non-biodegradable. it all up at two in the morning... don’t make my Christmas tree farms act as a carbon sink, fixing mistake! Merry environmental carbon dioxide Christmas!

The Brownies in Tickhill are having a busy time this term, and it’s not over yet! We started in September by making chocolate cakes in mugs and then votive lanterns using glue and tissue paper. We’ve been on an autumn walk taking pictures of natural objects that make letters, followed by a week making musical instruments and music. In October we held a Bingo Night, splitting the proceeds between our Holiday fund, and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. We raised £610 on the night which increased to a whopping £1110 with the help of Lloyds TSB Matched Funding, applied for on our behalf by one of our parents. We were very pleased to send a cheque off to Weston Park for £589.58 in memory of Neil White, one of our dads, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in the summer. We decorated St. Mary’s church, along with the Guides and Rainbows, for the Remembrance Day Service, at which we assisted the choir in singing ‘Only Remembered’ from War Horse. We celebrated Diwali with help of parents, and if all that wasn’t enough to keep us busy, in November we went off for a weekend to Hesley Wood Guide House for a Pack Holiday, with a theme of ‘Around the World in 40 Hours’. We have a stall booked in the Scout Hut for the late night opening, also to raise funds for our holiday fund. Many of you may have seen the sculptures popping up around the country of Shaun the sheep, or Paddington Bear, well, the Brownies, not to be outdone, will be making Elephant sculptures which I hope we will be able to display at a later date. To top it all off, we are looking forward to the 60

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club 20th Anniversary Luncheon On Thursday 29th November approximately 60 members of Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club enjoyed a rather long lunch at the Millstone to celebrate the club’s 20th anniversary. Probus nationally was founded in the 1960’s but did not come to Tickhill until 1995 as a result of a chance remark overheard by Dennis Healey that there were several clubs for ladies in the town but none for men. Dennis set up a meeting to gauge interest and advertised it in several local papers. Over 40 men turned up and as a result Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club was founded. 9 out of 10 of the remaining Founder members attended the lunch. In his speech after the meal, President Bas James said that, unlike some other Probus clubs Tickhill had been successful over the years with a current membership of over 80. Whilst many factors contributed to its success Bas said he thought the main one was that the club had always been a friendly one, always ready to welcome new members, always ready to support members during periods of illness or other difficulty. The members present heartily endorsed this. Altogether a very successful day made possible by the efforts of Steve Payne and his team together with the Millstone staff. We thank them all. Tickhill . . . but not TODAY

Tickhill and District

Local History Society

At our October meeting a packed audience heard Jean Townsend talk on “Henry VIII, Victim or Villain”. Often in history Henry has been cast as the villain, breaking with the Church of Rome and causing much upheaval in the Country as a result simply because he wanted to marry another woman (well, five others as it turned out). However later research has shown that for much of his life Henry was far from well and even appears to have fractured his skull at some time. So perhaps he wasn’t quite such a villain after all. As usual Jean’s talk was a bit controversial but very interesting: thank you Jean for a very entertaining evening. 66

Society membership has now risen to 158, unusually high for this time of the year (membership usually rises steadily from September to the following May). We have arranged with the Methodist Church for extra seats to be available in the hall so that everyone can enjoy the meetings in comfort. Our next meeting will be the Christmas Social and Supper which is a MEMBERS ONLY EVENT at the Millstone Hotel on Thursday December 10th. Admission is by ticket only; if by the time you read this you still haven’t bought a ticket there may still be a few left, so ring Dorothy Bradley on 752429.

FINALLY WE WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Seasons Greetings from Tickhill Art Group

– Implementation The Town Council has begun the long process of turning the community's aspirations into reality. A meeting of those involved in steering the NP through to the successful referendum has gone through the document to identify how we can make progress, especially in the short term, whose help we will need and what the costs will be. For much of the NP, we require the support of and often funding from Doncaster MBC. We have begun the necessary negotiations. Below are a few of the aspects we are exploring. 1 Through traffic. The new airport link road from the M18 (Junction 3) to Parrots Corner is expected to open next February. Although longer in mileage, it will open up a quicker and easier route from the M18 to Bawtry for the through traffic which winds through Maltby and Tickhill, contributing congestion and pollution to our town. It is expected that drivers will discover the improved route for themselves but the Council is going to ensure, as far as we can, that Satnav providers know about it. A week's road works on the A631 would of course help drivers learn the new route! 2 Roadside verges. There are two aspects to this. Many of you complain about parking on verges and grassed areas like those in Alderson Drive. The Council may pay for bollards to prevent this happening. You may have seen splendid displays of wild flowers on some roads in Doncaster; we are talking to officers about the possibility of similar plantings in Tickhill. Of course, this will be less tidy than close mown grass but it is good for the environment and costs less. 3 Parking. This problem will go on! Councillors have already conducted one survey of the use of St.Mary's Road car park and will repeat this, probably extended into the town centre streets. The results will be shared with the business community. Initial results suggest that a lot of potentially short-term spaces for shoppers are being occupied by all day parking. Constructive ideas from residents will be welcome as there are no easy answers. Next time I will report on further aspects, such as road safety and tourism.

Tickhill Town Council - DECEMBER 2015

A message from the Town Mayor The Council’s activities during 2015 have been overshadowed by the untimely death in July of Ray Hill whose energy, enthusiasm and drive has, over the years, been of great benefit to Tickhill and its residents. His parting led us into the third election of the year for Council Members. The other two were caused by the departure of four of our Town Councillors at the end of their terms of office who, between them, had given Tickhill many years of service. Disappointingly, there were only two applicants willing to stand for the four vacant positions and notices had to be served for applicants willing to be co-opted onto the Council. The new Council has moved forward into a new era of promoting even more public participation in the running of the Town. The number of Council meetings has been increased to two per month (on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month). In order to facilitate public access, the Council on the second Tuesday is being held in the morning and the one on the fourth Tuesday in the evening. Time is set aside at the start of each session for Electors to raise general matters or make observations and for attendees wishing to raise objections to/support for a particular planning application to state their case prior to Council’s discussion of the particular application. In addition, each Councilor is responsible for particular aspects of the Council’s activities and issues that could cause concern to residents - for example fracking 70

and the implementation of the Neighbourhood Plan. It is felt that this structure will assist us in meeting the ever increasing workloads and demands that are being generated by public involvement and legislation.

In addition 2015 has seen the return of the popular TFest music festival and the Tickhill Grand Prix cycle race and, of course we have the annual Tickhill Gala. As well as giving the community a great day out, the Gala provides much needed funds for our local Scouts and Guides groups.

Another activity worthy of note is the Diversionary Activities that are organized by DMBC and Tickhill Town Council along with a splendid group of volunteers. These provide well organized and supervised sporting and other activities for children twice a week during the long summer holidays.

We are lucky to have such diverse and active groups in Tickhill that provide us all with a fuller life. It would be wrong (and there isn’t enough space) to single out particular groups and their activities but two unique events during the year should be remembered. These were the Quilting and Royal Memorabilia exhibitions along with the evening of singing which were organized by Tickhill Together to celebrate the longevity of the Queen’s reign.

It just remains for me to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful, healthy and prosperous New Year

Northgate Pre-School have available places for 2,3 and 4 year olds now! Please contact us for more information. About Northgate Pre-School and Toddlers Northgate Pre-School and Toddlers has been open for 47 years and has evolved to the changing times and environment along the way. Pre-School is now based in a classroom at St Marys School and is open 5 days a week term time only. Toddlers is still at the Methodist Church school rooms. We are a charity, run by a voluntary committee and are actively looking for a Treasurer and Secretary. We depend on fundraising to continue to provide excellent resources for all the children. We would like to thank Claire Dickinson and her team for the fabulous cocktail evening at Tickhill Cricket Club, you raised a fantastic £570! Thank you to everyone who came and supported us. We are Ofsted registered and are listed as good in our last inspection. We follow the Early Years curriculum to offer a wide range of learning opportunities for your child. We welcome parents to be involved with their child’s learning and development and feel that parent partnership is very important. What’s been happening at Northgate Pre-School From the children’s experiences we have been talking about ‘People who help us’. We have visited the local dentist, hairdressers, post office and library. We have explored these in our role play area within the setting. The children have also enjoyed exploring the outdoors by focusing on the change of seasons, reading a range of stories, hunting for the Gruffalo and looking for the Owl babies. We have used lots of natural resources to get creative with. We encourage children to read with their grown-ups at home and have a ‘reading challenge’ every half term.
