Love is deaf. You can’t just tell someone you love them. You have to show it.

Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.

The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th February.

U

Late 2015 brought the news that the Tour De Yorkshire would be winging its way through this area on Saturday 30th April. This could be a huge opportunity for our local communities, drawing people from other parts of the area and much farther afield to watch the race. If you are planning activities on that day do please keep me in touch so that we can include a full list of local events in the March and April issues and ensure everyone knows where the action is taking place!

PRO

It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s the thoughts and efforts that go a long way. Random acts of kindness, however small, have the power to at the very least put a small smile on someone’s face. In the US they will be celebrating Random Acts of Kindness day on 17th February, but maybe this is something better carried out every day, whenever the opportunity arises? If everyone was kind to the people around them what a different world we would live in. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February perhaps you could have a go at extending some love.

2008 (BAWTRY) SQUADRON Well 2015 was a busy year for our Bawtry Air Cadets. They paraded, marched, climbed, swam, abseiled and flown through 2015 and they have become better Cadets for it. Their experiences will be great memories for them in the future. Some of our Cadets have been lucky enough to travel abroad on International Camps and experience something very special. Other cadets have also had unique experiences such as meeting and having a very close encounter with the fabulous Red Arrows, abseiling down the side of cliffs in the Lake District, sailing in Scotland or learning all about the intricate workings of the wonderful Avro Vulcan. With the help of one of our staff CI Victoria Aldridge, we chose to donate Christmas items for the homeless and also children from poverty stricken families. With the help of ST Oswald’s Primary in Finningley, we collected many items that our Cadets then used to create giftboxes, these were delivered to Hallam FM to use in their Mission For Christmas appeal. Items collected for the homeless such as food, toiletries and warm clothing were being stored in CI Aldridge’s vehicle over night. Sadly her van was broken into and many items were taken including all the food and toiletries. Once reported to the local area on Facebook and the Doncaster Free Press

more donations poured in and the items were replaced 10 times over and the huge delivery took place a few days before Christmas and their reaction was over whelming. CI Aldridge would like to thank the Air Cadets, the children of St Oswald’s as well as the surrounding community for all their donations and support. To end the year the cadets were treated to a night of bowling and also some fun and laughter at the annual Christmas party. And so now we look forward to events of 2016 and the extra special 60th Anniversary of 2008 Bawtry Squadron as well as the 75th year of the Air Cadet Corps. T

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

Does this sound familiar? “ We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children” These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills. Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Also available: APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

EVERTON VILLAGE PLAYERS Everton Village Players are taking to the stage in February with a comedy, My Friend Miss Flint, by Donald Churchill and Peter Yeldham. In a plot full of twists and turns Tom Lambert a botanist and TV gardening personality, has an unexpected one-night stand with Lucy. Shortly afterwards he receives a call from the Inland Revenue. As the plot unravels and a Picasso vanishes from the wall, it seems that his ex-wife and accountant, Sarah, has been rather economical with the truth about his earnings. He is not helped by pub entertainer Albert, his part time char-person, who has been equally cavalier about his own tax affairs. The arrival of Mr Dodds and Mrs Lens from the tax office causes panic. How Tom attempts to extricate himself from this financial tangle provides sparkling moments of bluff and double bluff in this highly entertaining comedy. The play will take place in Everton Village Hall from Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th of February at 7:30pm. Tickets can be obtained from the Box Office (01777 817275) or via the Players web site (www.evertonvillageplayers. co.uk) , where there is more information about the play. Tickets are £6 (£5 for students). In conjunction with the Everton Village Players the Sun Inn in Everton are offering a discount off a pretheatre dinner to playgoers. If you are interested in this please mention it when you book your tickets. T

What happens when you’re hurt? At some point in our lives we will all sustain an injury – cuts, sprains and bruises are all familiar problems. Few patients really understand what is happening to their body at this time and yet understanding the process can help manage these problems effectively.… Incurring an injury means that the tissue fibres are disrupted and bleeding occurs. The amount will depend on the severity of the injury and the type of tissue affected. Quickly following on from this, inflammation will build, typically over a 24-72 hour period. Chemicals are released into the area causing blood vessels to enlarge and become leaky. Several types of cell can then enter the area which will create a clot to stop the bleeding, clean up toxins and debris to prevent infection and begin the rebuilding and repair phase. As you can see, in the context of an injury, this inflammatory process is absolutely essential to the healing process even though the resulting pain, heat, swelling and redness are unpleasant.

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

As the inflammation subsides, the repair process continues with the laying down of scar tissue and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients via newly formed blood vessels. This scar tissue will strengthen and be refined over the ensuing months. This amazing series of events means that in most cases a natural recovery occurs following injury. However, there are many factors that can have a negative impact on healing and act as barriers to recovery. Although the healing process can’t be accelerated, physiotherapy can both eliminate any barriers to recovery and work to promote ideal conditions in which the repair process can occur effectively.

community Hello everyone, it is snowing as I am writing this so I am hoping everyone is warm and safe. The weather is really cold at the moment but luckily all our dogs and cats are kept warm in their houses and cat pens. All our new kennel block is now up and running and we are so proud of our new buildings. A big thank you to Adoption for Pets who funded this project for us. We have an appeal on Face Book at the moment for a little cross breed puppy called Tim he was a litter of 7 and it transpired that he has a heart condition. The little chap will struggle to reach maturity without this operation. After a specialist vets appointment that cost £800 we decided to go ahead with the operation, however the operation will be £2000 which we know is a lot of money but we think this pup with a steely character deserves a chance. So we are now asking for donations to get this little pup back on track and give him a bright future. If you would like to make any small or large donation please either call us or take a look at our Face Book page.

Finding a forever home

arrange this for you at our Sanctuary, we charge £12.00 for this service. We have recently reunited a cat with its owner after going missing for quite some time; this was in fact because it was Micro chipped. So the process does work. We are arranging a fundraising evening at The Ship at Newington it will be a Race Night on the 25th Feb first race to start at 7.30. The tickets are £5 and pie and peas will be included. Tickets available from the venue and the Sanctuary or you could just pay on the door. However it would make life easier if they knew how many people would want pie and peas. Please support us it will be a fun evening and you may make your fortune. Look forward to seeing you there. We will also be arranging a Body Shop party in our reception area in March and I will let you know all about that in the next issue so watch this space!

At the moment we have 50 dogs in our Sanctuary, lots of cross breeds and even pedigrees. They are with us for various reasons, but they all need that special someone to make them part of a loving family life. We had lots of dogs abandoned over the New Year period. There were at least 6 dogs tied to our gate at the bottom of the lane during this period. All with no history at all. However better tied to our gates than let out on a motorway as one little dog was. A kind motorist stopped on the A1 as he had seen a dog running and causing serious havoc. He did manage to catch it and put it in his cab. We were called and came to the rescue of this lucky little dog. He was only with us a couple of weeks before a lovely family adopted him. Micro chipping is law from this April, so if you do have a dog you will need to arrange for this to be done. Apart from anything else if you do become parted from your beloved pet you will be able to be reunited quickly. It is a very quick procedure and we can

We were absolutely desperate for a new van, without transport we cannot function. They came to our rescue and a very BIG thank you from us all. Please come and see us, whether it’s to take a look at our Shop Pet area that we have in reception or to look for a pet that will share your life. Maybe you would like to drop off old towels, blankets, black bin bags, wash powder, washing up liquid or long lasting treats. All of these will make life so much easier for the Sanctuary. Items like this still need to come out of our funds.

That is how they came into the care of Mayflower. Since then a lot has happened to these little guys and as you can see they have grown (a lot !!) Two of them have found new homes and have settled brilliantly but the remaining 4 are still patiently waiting. Black cats are always overlooked which is a shame as they are just as loving as the ‘prettier ones. They are a little nervous when you first meet them but are very loving once they have had time to adjust.

Name: Buddy Sex: Male 21/1/15 Date into care: 3 Years Age on arrival: Good with dogs: Some Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: ?? A very affectionate and loving boy. A loyal companion and has a lovely nature. The new owners will need to be firm and show strong leadership with him so that he becomes a relaxed and happy dog. He doesn’t like cars, trains etc. He may be best suited to a quiet household with a big garden and quiet country walks. He is the perfect dog inside he just need guidance and training to go outside on walks. We work with dog listeners who will help you along the way. If you give him patience, love, leadership and guidance he will make the best pet ever. I do travel well. Arts Review

& what’s going on - FEBRUARY 2016 HILARY

Art History Lecture: Friday February 12th: Cubism An exploration of perhaps the most significant movement in the history of art, when, taking a lead from the works of Paul Cezanne, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso redefined the way that artists depict the world. Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture costs £5 to be paid at the museum reception and includes refreshments. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day and prepare to be educated and inspired.

MARTIN PARR This appears to be photography month with a number of interesting shows spanning a wide range of time to go and see. The Hepworth Wakefield 4 Feb - 12 June MARTIN PARR ‘The Rhubarb Triangle & Other Stories’ a major exhibition by British photographer Martin Parr. The largest Martin Parr exhibition in the UK since his Barbican retrospective in 2002, comprising more than 300 photographs that span the past 40 years. A new commission lies at the heart of the exhibition and consists of a series of photographs taken over the last 12 months in an area of countryside known as ‘The Rhubarb Triangle’ between Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell in West Yorkshire, which is famous for producing early-forced rhubarb FREE ENTRY If you know Martin Parr’s work you will be as chuffed as I am that we have his photographs on display at such close range. He has a wonderful eye and captures the ordinary folk of Britain with a kind but wicked wit. He is an inspirational picture maker and this show will be well worth the trek to Wakefield to see. Don’t miss it! www.hepworthwakefield.org Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: 16 January – 9 April John Sparkes: a major retrospective by Doncaster born artist of paintings and drawings made over 45 years. And at Cusworth 23 January – 3 April photographs by Luke Bagshaw from the collection. These photographs were taken over a century ago and record the rapid changes being brought about in the town. What is building control? Building Control is a service that ensures that building work satisfies the minimum standards required by the Building Regulations. Your building project may require a Building Regulation application even if it doesn’t need Planning Permission. Building Regulations exist to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people in and around buildings. They are also intended to conserve fuel, power and water. Required to demonstrate compliance on the sale or purchase of a property Myths That you have to use your Local Authority to get Building Regulation Approval That Approved Inspectors are more expensive than your Local Authority A good Approved Inspector can: • Guide you through the various different Regulations • Save you money and time by building on their expertise • Protect you from Cowboy Builders

• Remove all the hassle • Help you achieve your dreams Building, altering, extending, or just carrying out improvements can be stressful at the best of times, but getting the help of and Approved Inspector can make life much easier. The latest trend seems to be replacing conservatory roofs and it’s possible that many are being done without seeking Building Regulations, which may cause home, owners problems in the future when they try and sell their properties. So if you are contemplating:• Changing that conservatory roof • Extending • Altering • Loft conversion • New build Then you must consider the need for Building Regulation approval.

NOT ALL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS PHYSICAL THE EMOTIONAL INJURIES CAN BE JUST AS DAMAGING It is a sad fact that many people, both men and women are the victims of domestic abuse from a partner who is never physically violent to them. This abuse takes the sinister form of controlling, often verbally abusive behaviour which completely undermines the other person’s self -confidence, making them feel stupid and worthless and constantly afraid to do or say anything

which might upset their partner. Very often abusers work hard to isolate their victim from family or other people who could support them. Fans of the long running radio series “The Archers” will know that pregnant Helen Tichener is being controlled and abused emotionally by her husband Rob, who is steadily cutting her off from her family and old friends. The good news is that the Family Courts now recognise this type of abuse for what it is and can act to protect victims and their children by means of a Non-Molestation order or, if necessary, an Occupation Order requiring the abuser to move out of the family home. Legal Aid is still available for this type of case, subject to financial assessment, and once the court makes an order against an abusive partner, it is possible to apply for legal aid to deal with divorce and finances too.

Help for Parents of Disabled Children Brainwave, a children’s charity, is reaching out to offer assistance to local parents of children living with special needs. The charity has identified South Yorkshire as a territory that is currently under-represented within its service, and it aims to help more children from the County. Brainwave helps children living with disabilities and complex needs to achieve greater independence. It helps children living with a range of conditions: cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, developmental delay and rare genetic disorders. According to Rebecca Earp of Maltby, “Brainwave doesn’t set limits. They see past that and focus on what your child CAN do. It is a really positive place to go.”

I believe that not only does staying fit and healthy improve your well-being, but doing it for such a local, worthy cause makes it a win-win scenario.” The charity, which raised over £1.8 million last year to support vital projects within the hospital, has 3 dedicated ‘& Raise’ clubs where those raising funds for the cancer charity can do so alongside other fundraisers as part of ‘Team Weston Park’.

Former referee urges region to embrace fitness for cancer charity A former referee, who was awarded an MBE for his services to football, is supporting Weston Park hospital by urging people to support a charity ‘New Year, New You’ initiative. Howard Webb, from Rotherham, who is Patron of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is encouraging people to think of the charity and offer support through various sporting activities across the year.

Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said “From our annual Run in the Park event to public events, we want everyone from beginners to experienced fitness fanatics to join Team Weston Park this year and vow to support our work.” “The charity and hospital are facing a growing challenge with the expectation that by 2020, 1 in 2 of us are expected to be affected by cancer in our lifetime. It is only with the support of our dedicated fundraisers who take on selfless challenges for us that we can continue to support the hospital’s vital work and ensure more patients in our region can fight this disease. ” To find out more about joining the cancer charity’s dedicated ‘& Raise’ clubs and for tips to get fit visit the website at: http:// wphcancercharity.org.uk/run_and_raise.html T

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity raises funds to support world-class research, treatment and care for cancer patients in South Yorkshire and beyond. This year with Howard’s backing, the charity is urging people to pull their trainers on and run, walk or ride to help raise vital funds for the hospital whilst simultaneously improving their own fitness levels. Howard, who got together with the charity’s Mascot, Westie, a few weeks ago, has filmed some short video clips to encourage people to take part in a sporting activity or challenge during 2016. 40

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN This is the second in a series of occasional articles about progress in implementing our Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan. The Plan is intended to cover the same 15-year period as the Borough’s plan, clearly it will need revising over that time frame but it’s important to accept that it will be a matter of ‘one step at a time’ and taking opportunities as they arise to move forward with the community’s aspirations.

left to nature for 50 years. DMBC has granted a lease to Tickhill so this nature reserve is preserved for the future. In a relatively small area, there is woodland, small pools and wetland and an open meadow. The Council aims to create a path to make it easier for people to enjoy the area but please treat it with respect as it is one of the few areas in the parish where nature can flourish.

Tourism – we are keen to promote Tickhill as a destination. Even without access into the castle, the town has much to offer with many historic buildings, the Mill Dam and a variety of shops. Doncaster borough is doing far more tourist business than one might realise with, for example, the phenomenal growth in visitor numbers at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, and we want to be part of this. A town trail leaflet, developed from an informative leaflet of 30 years ago, will be prepared and publicity for Tickhill’s events secured through Doncaster’s Tourist Information Centre and website. It is also hoped to have a historical information board in the Market Place.

Car Parking – a thorny issue! The Council has conducted two surveys of usage of the St. Mary’s Road car park and part of Sunderland Street. The results did not surprise. Out of 54 spaces in the car park, on the first occasion 40 were occupied by the same space all morning, on the second occasion 44, leaving very few spaces for the short-stay shopper. The picture on Sunderland Street was similar. Most of these long-stay vehicles were there all day. Tickhill Together organised a well-attended public meeting which brought forward a number of practical suggestions which will be explored further. None of them involve charging as we all consider free parking to be essential to the wellbeing of local businesses. The objective is to look for solutions which will create more short-term parking spaces during morning and afternoon; Tickhill Wildwood – there is an area of naturally regenerating woodland beside the public footpath (track) from Sunderland Street alongside the A1. The land, once used for extraction of soil and as a landfill site, has been 42

Tickhill Music Society Welcome to our first concert of 2016! Friday, 19th February at 8.00 p.m. St. Mary’s Primary School Jane Lindsay (cello) and Jennifer Hughes (piano) Their programme will include sonatas by Beethoven and Richard Strauss.

Tickhill Music Society Concert The December concert was billed as the Christmas Concert and so was favoured with special arrangements. Instead of the audience sitting in serried ranks they sat at candlelit tables. Instead of interval coffee there were assorted wines and fruit juices. Biscuits were replaced by tasty mince pies and there was a festive atmosphere throughout – including the usual Christmas raffle. The musical fare came from a talented duo called Dodici Corde playing traditional and classical guitars. The artists were Mark Willetts and Danielle Saxon Reeves. Music came from the Golden Age or Early Romantic period (1780 – 1880 approximately). The programme began with Concerto Grosso No 6 by Corelli (1653 – 1713) in 6 movements fittingly known as the Christmas Concerto. Immediately the skill and sensitivity of the artists was apparent and they blended well as a team. This was followed by a 3 movement Sonata by Christian Gottlieb Seidler. The second half began with Vivaldi favourite Winter Op 8 No 4 whose icy harmonies were well captured. Two pieces by Ferdinando Carulli (Op 34 Nos 2 and 3) were followed by a carol by the French composer Adolphe Adam. The programme came to an appropriate end with Franz Gruber’s Silent Night. This was a concert without fireworks or bombast. Instead there was subtle intimacy and gentle sensitivity which was soothing to the spirit. The two performers blended beautifully and made a splendid team and their evident enjoyment of the music was most pleasing to see. In short another successful concert to round off 2015.

St John the Baptist Wadworth

Wadworth Village Hall Events

We will be taking advantage of the some of the splendid windows within church for our celebration of Candlemass on Wednesday 3rd February at 7:30pm. We will use the window which depicts the readings used at Candlemass together with the window that depicts the stoning of St Stephen to bring a freshness to a traditional service. Many old prayers will be used in a contemporary service as we preserve tradition but try new ways. The new spaces created in Wadworth Church as a result of last year’s facilities improvements will help us move around church from window to window, also using the space under the bell tower and in the sanctuary.

February 2016

The following Wednesday 10th February we meet again in Wadworth church for our Ash Wednesday service as begin Lent and focus on the cross of Good Friday. Ash Wednesday is a great time to start a spiritual self-examination. Are you right with God? Do you focus too much on yourself and not enough on others? This is the time to think about such questions and others. In between the Wednesdays on Sunday 7th February at 6:30pm we have our monthly Something Different service, for those who are seeking something different from a church service. We start with home-made Cakes and drinks and then move into a period of praising God. The theme is linked into a secular song “If I’d know you were coming I’d have baked a cake”. We finish with some more praise & some prayers. Individual prayers for healing are available at the end of the service.” During Lent we have several fund raising events for a chosen charity so keep an eye out for dates and times on our notice board, Facebook page and blog. Dear Friends,

The New You

I am writing this article in mid-January so I’m still thinking about things we have resolved to do to make us ‘new’ or ‘fresh’ in the year 2016.

suggest to you that spending time by meditating on the Holy Scriptures and praying to God will help you to think about your behaviour or thoughts.

Some of us are still evaluating our past and wondering what we can do to achieve the best for this year. Others are thinking of how best we can do things differently in order to maintain the best we have achieved so far.

These will help you to consider what you do or say and change the direction of your life in a positive way this year.

Some facts come to my mind and they are based on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans in the bible. Chapter 12 versus 1 and 2 from ‘The Message’ translation state, “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life - your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life - and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you”. The Apostle encourages us first to be ‘original’ as we engage with our culture. We are not to copy what we do not understand. Or, we are not to think that because every person is doing it or says so it is the right thing for us to do. Rather, it is best to ask God to help us in our decision-making. As God reveals to us his plans, do have the will to adjust in order to free our minds of any difficult issues. He can reveal his plans through the good books we read, the good conversations we have with other people, the programmes we watch or listen to, and so on. We all need a bit of transformation and God does it best for us. He will help us to change by the way we think. In addition, as a Christian, I wonder if I can 48

The following prayer was helpful to me a few days ago and I wonder if you can own it and use it as often times as possible. God, I praise you with all that I am, knowing that my strength comes from joy in you now and always. I praise you for your mercy, for forgiving my sins. Remind me that mercy always triumphs over judgment and that only you, the God of all grace, will restore me and make me strong. Renew my heart and let your gentle Spirit lead me down the right path. Please grant me peace in my heart. May my burdens lead me to rest in you as I grow closer to you each day. Let me fill my mind with truth, righteousness, beauty and all things worthy of praise. Thank you God for your promise to watch over me always and to hold me up with your victorious right hand. Thank you God for giving me a hope and a future. Let me take every action in the coming year fixing my eyes on Jesus. Amen. (Written by Melody; http://www. dayspring.com/articles/a-new-years-prayer) Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Looking back we are happy that with the responsible and cheerful help of Scout Explorers and their leaders and a number of ‘Friends of Lions’ we were able to let as many people as possible know that Santa was on his way if they had not already heard him in the distance. As previously reported the practice was inspected by the Care Quality Commission in October 2015. Published in Mid-December the report was published after the deadline for us to make comment in the January article. The report is broken down into 5 areas and the report states the practice is GOOD in three of those areas. These are:Are services effective? Are services caring? Are services responsive to people’s needs?

The Practice Manager in conjunction with NHS England has issued the following statement. “During a routine inspection by the Care Quality Commission it was found that the practice did not meet in full all of the criteria required, resulting in the practice being given a rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ We can confirm that there are no immediate concerns with regard to patient safety at the surgery and patients should visit the practice as normal. We are working with our partner NHS organisations to ensure that we are fully compliant and we expect to have met the Care Quality Commission’s recommendations by 31st May 2016. We apologise for any worry or distress this news may cause, and confirm that we are fully committed to providing GP services, which are of the highest possible standards for patients.”

Our other website www.tickhilldiscoveritspast. org.uk which is associated with ourbook has had some additional info added to it but we could do with a lot more. We’d love to hear from people who have stories to tell, facts to add, comments to make – all of which would enrich the understanding and appreciation of Tickhill and its heritage. Thanks to Steve Payne for his enthusiastic work in keeping our websites up to date. Our February Meeting.. This will be on Thursday 18th February when Janet Stain will talk about “Knickers - a brief history”. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome.

Tickhill Parish Room 2016, and another new beginning for us all. New Year’s Resolutions may still be successful at this stage in January (15th as I am writing) but it is possible by the time you are reading this you will have abandoned most of them. Maybe you will have decided to go on that diet at last (see times for Slimming World sessions on Thursdays). Maybe you are going to improve your French (Francophiles will help with that on the first Wednesday of the month). The list is endless – you can be educated and entertained, you can learn a new skill, get fitter, learn a musical instrument. We have Coffee Mornings planned, including our own regular Coffee Morning every Saturday, Soup lunches are planned and Coffee and Company are organised for the year! Regular bookings are as follows: Monday – Ukulele Group Tuesday – Yoga Wednesday (first of the month) WI and Francophiles Thursday – (second of the month) Coffee and Company, Thursday - Slimming World Saturday – Coffee Morning

Tickhill Town Council - FEBRUARY 2016

At this time of year the Council work is mainly centred on finance and budgets. I have received confirmation from D.M.B.C. there will be no local capping on the Precept in the next financial year (2016-2017). The only source of income for the Council is from the Precept, a Parish Grant and income from of the Pavilion. The Council website continues to be used heavily for residents and a thank you to Cllr. B. Keith for administrating the site and keeping this up to date. If you have not yet viewed the site please do, and if you do not have a computer one is available in the library. The website is www. tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk The Councillors continue to work hard and with two regular council meetings per month there is even more pull on their time, which they give voluntarily. The meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday at 10.30am and the 4th Tuesday at 7.00pm, at both these meetings there is time for residents to speak and to show their concerns with a separate time put aside for planning discussions. Not only is Tickhill Town Council the first in Yorkshire to have a Neighbourhood Plan; no 62

Despite Tickhill Town Council’s continual requests to D.M.B.C., the council still receive complaints about vehicles parking on pavements. The grass verges are also being used for parking on and are beginning to look very shabby. Please could we try to keep the pavements and grass verges clear and give pedestrians access to walk safely and maintain the appearance of the Town?

The Council would like to say a big thank you to Brooke’s Haulage for the assistance they give in the erecting of the Christmas tree and for the disposal of the tree in January. This Year the Christmas lights were particularly good and yet again the weather was favourable for the Carol Service. If you would like to make a booking at the Pavilion, please contact Jamie on 07591179658. If he is unable to answer, please send a text and he will respond. This is an ideal venue for parties and can be booked months in advance and Tickhill Town Council now have some bookings in the diary for March!

Size does matter for male slimmers!

we have a great time. Plus with Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan no foods are banned. Instead I’ve learned how to cook healthier versions of my favourite meals like Slimming World chips, Slimming world lasagne & a lovely full English breakfast and every week we share new recipes and handy tips.”

A slimming club might be thought of as a woman’s world but local men are celebrating after losing 25 stone at their local Slimming World groups.

Slimming World Consultant Christine says: “It’s great that we’re able to celebrate this milestone and, without doubt, all of these men have improved their health. That’s so important because the latest obesity statistics from the Government show that there are more overweight and obese men in England than women – 65% of men are overweight or obese compared to 56% of women.

The men, who are aged 21 to 57 all attend Christine Cheetham’s Slimming World groups in Maltby & Tickhill and have lost a total weight of 25 stone between them. But best of all, they’ve done that without giving up their favourite foods and still tuck into curries, steaks, burgers, roast dinners, fry-ups, and fish and chips, even enjoying the odd glass of beer too. Dene Higson who attends the Tickhill group is a target member he has lost over 3 stones, he says: “Like most men I thought slimming clubs were for women and expected to be eating nothing but salad. But the minute I walked through the door I realised that nothing could have been further from the truth. Being a target member means it is free for him to attend while he is within his target zone. Dave Briggs a member of the Maltby group who has lost 3 stone 7lb says I originally joined the group to support my wife and I’m so proud of her she has lost 5 stone 7lbs. We were made very welcome. There’s a real mix of people – men and women of all ages - and

“Even though men tend to be more nervous when they first join, they are actually some of the most successful slimmers. Men tend to have more muscle mass than women do and as muscle uses up energy it means that men often lose weight a little faster than women. Men also tend to be extremely focused when they start on a healthy eating plan and often see very good weight losses in the first few weeks, which motivates them to carry on and reach their targets quickly.” Christine runs her groups on Monday at The Manor Hotel, Maltby, at 7:30pm & on Thursday at the Parish room, Tickhill at 5:30/7:30pm. If you would like to find out more just call in, alternatively give her a ring on 07825 686 437. T

St. Mary’s Church 100 Club Numbers are still available – how about joining and assisting St. Mary’s to meet its financial commitments for 2016. We were pleased to make a contribution of £3,200 at the end of 2015.

A draw was made on the Sunday before Christmas following the 10.30am service. The numbers were drawn by youngsters Nicholas Johnson and Sam Rowbotham. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 68
