I had such plans to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, missing things, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, as I write this with just 10 days left to go and still with not a card written, 5 magazines to finish, shopping still to do and lots still to organise, it looks like I will be working and preparing right up to Christmas again! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation.

I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends.

Les Francophiles de Tickhill A night-time car chase through Paris in the first scene introduces the main characters: two outcasts – the untouchables. One, Philippe, is a fabulously wealthy aristocrat paralysed after a paragliding accident. The other, Driss, is a young black man from a deprived housing estate. Then comes a flashback which shows Driss, just out of prison, homeless and penniless, being hired by Philippe as a carer on a trial basis. After his difficult and comical start in the job, his unlikely employer offers Driss a permanent position. Everything about the two men – background, culture, language – divides them. Yet their respective handicaps bring them closer and bind them in a long –lasting and unselfishly beneficial friendship. Above all the film suggests a humanist view where class differences and stereotypes are gradually eroded by goodwill, spontaneity, generosity and a zest for life. There is no room in this story for pity and compassion; laughter is the keynote.

Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child A total of 5,576 Shoe Boxes were sent in 2015 from the Doncaster area to the Ukraine; 214 boxes were collected from Tickhill, Bawtry and Harworth including 63 boxes filled by St Mary’s School, which is a tremendous effort. Thank you so much to all who contributed to and supported the Shoe Box Appeal in 2015, your generosity is much appreciated and will bring joy and love to a needy child. Pat and Chris

The choice of actors – including supporting roles – is undoubtedly a key factor in the success of this film. François Cluzet is very moving and touching in his portrayal of the disabled aristocrat. With his unfailing sense of humour, cynical and self-effacing by turns, he never tips over into melodrama. Similarly, Omar Sy, awarded the César for best actor in 2012, is irresistible in the role of Driss. One cannot fail to be charmed by the character’s cheerful and contagious energy. In addition, a dense and varied musical score beautifully accompanies every scene, our emotions enhanced by classical music, soul, funk, folk and opera. The Intouchables is an excellent antidote to post – Christmas gloom. We urge you to join us for this viewing in French with English subtitles at 7.30pm at the Parish Room, Tickhill, DN11 9HZ on Wednesday, 6th January 2016. T

Tickhill Residents’ Association - AGM The AGM of the above Association will be held on Wednesday 17th February 2016 at 7.30pm in the Parish Room, Tickhill. At this meeting, as well as the statutory Agenda items, the future of the Association will be discussed to determine the direction in which it should go. Tickhill Music Society – concert review The November concert for Tickhill Music Society provided a piano recital, always a popular event for the audience, and on this occasion given by Grace Yeo who comes from Korea. Her programme began with Debussy’s Children’s Corner suite a tasty and tuneful starter before the main items. Of the six movements Jimbo’s Lullaby was suitably elephantine. The snow is dancing was delicately impressionistic and The Golliwog’s Cakewalk both jolly and jerky as befits this American dance style. Moving to more substantial fare we heard the technically challenging Sonata No. 2 by Alexander Glazanov (1865 - 1936). It has three movements: a robust, forceful and powerful first movement, a Scherzo with a cataract of cascading notes and a Finale full of pianistic power and attack, without much lyrical repose but ending with a hymn-like coda. All this the pianist handled with great skill and panache, bringing the first half to a triumphant end. The second half was devoted to Ferencz Liszt (1811 -

1886) an acknowledged giant of piano playing, as well as being a composer of substantial works. The Five Hungarian Folksongs did not seem to be particularly ‘folksy’ for they had plenty of fireworks, but when the tune eventually emerged it was suitably lyrical. The final item on the programme was the monumental majesty of the great Sonata in B minor, a powerful and meaty work in a single movement. Once more the pianist was fully capable of mastering this massive work. It was impressive to see how this delicate-looking female frame could produce such power over the keyboard. Fittingly, the enthusiastic applause produced a calming encore in the shape of an elegant Romance by Schumann to round off a stimulating, challenging and rewarding concert. Another triumph for Tickhill Music Society. Philip Mottram T

TICKHILL BOWLING CLUB We held our AGM on the 23rd November 2015 in the Tickhill Institute. The Chairperson thanked everyone for attending, and said what a good year we have had. A trip to Scarborough for 4 hours bowling, a good Fun Day in June, and a finals days in September. Lynda & Tony Bradbury attended the presentation night along with Christine & John Hodgson. The Wednesday afternoon team over sixties won promotion into the first division, and Lynda collected a cheque and a Trophy for the Club. Our over sixties Monday singles team are staying in Division one. Tuesday night doubles are staying where they are and Thursday night singles are going into division three. At the AGM Brian Keith stepped down from the secretary’s job and committee, and so did Tommy Plenderleith. A thank you to both

Brian and Tommy for the work they have put into the club for the last two years. Tony Bradbury offered to be secretary and on a show of hands was accepted. Real reasons to go running! We all know there is sound medical evidence that says exercise is good for us. Yet knowing we are keeping heart disease at bay and preventing type II diabetes doesn’t always help us feel motivated in the here and now. So here are some meaningful, real life reasons to run (other forms of exercise are also available!)… • It’s free • If you run, you can eat cake. And enjoy it. And who doesn’t want that?! • You can go when you want and where you want. With busy lives and hectic family schedules, a quick run is easier to squeeze in than you might think

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

• You can do away with weigh ins, scales and measuring various body parts…you can continually monitor the changes when you go out – the more you run, the less you’ll wobble • It’s a brilliant way to keep warm. You’ll get lovely and hot and can probably save yourself a couple of hours of heating on a running day • Fresh air and really experiencing the seasons is good for the soul (go with me on this one!) • You are setting your children up for lifelong healthy habits. It’s no good just badgering children to switch off the tv, turn off computer games and cut down on screen time. They need to see that exercise is a normal part of everyday life for everyone. • You’ll look better naked... feel better naked… (you can come to your own conclusions about the additional benefits of this) • If it’s possible, run past a graveyard – this serves as a great reminder of what the medical evidence actually boils down to. Exercise, and you’re going to live longer!

Patient Participation Group RGERY OF THE TICKHILL AND COLLIERY SU th and healthcare.) r heal (Aiming to help you, to be in control of you

Happy New Year! Firstly we would like to thank all those patients who have cancelled those appointments that they could not attend, over the past few months. The number of ‘Did Not Attend Appointments’ (DNA) had consistently reduced until October when they again increased. The latest figures available at the time of writing were Tickhill 63 DNA and Colliery 67 DNA. This is worrying as winter is the time of greatest demand for appointments and this waste of appointments cannot be absorbed, meaning more patients who need appointments cannot get them Secondly as a result of the multiple changes that have occurred at the Surgery over the past two or so years the PPG understands that some patients feel they no longer know who the staff are at the practice. We therefore intend in the next few articles to try to remedy this situation by sharing more information and introducing members of staff.

20

Tickhill Today

Here are a few facts and figures to start the process. The Tickhill and Colliery Surgery has 9225 registered patients of whom approximately two thirds are in Tickhill and one third in Harworth. The practice has the highest percentage of patients over 65 years of age in Doncaster and as such a greater demand on appointments It is a Training Practice which means as well as its own GPs it is registered to train registrars, who are qualified doctors doing their specialism in General Practice. At the time of writing the Practice has 4 GPS and 3 Registrars and is actively recruiting for a 5th GP. (The vacancy is covered by locum GPs in the meantime. This means our Medical Practice is fully staffed according to the numbers allocated by NHS England which puts them is a better position than many GP Surgeries in the country.

More information next month. As ever you can contact us via the comment box in either surgery or by email at :-tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Happy New Year to all and I hope everyone had a happy Christmas. Here at the Sanctuary we made sure that all of our residents had lovely Christmas presents to keep them occupied on Christmas morning. A big thank you to all staff that elected to work over the Christmas break keeping our dogs and cats fed watered and happy. We have been busy over the Christmas period fundraising. We have had 2 Doncaster street collections which were both a great success. We met the most interesting people that told us lovely stories about their dogs and cats. They were as always very generous. So thank you to everyone that volunteered to collect and also to everyone that came along and said hello. It is always a wonderful pleasure to collect in Doncaster Town centre. Yorkshire Caravans in Bawtry invited us to their Christmas event. They were happy for us to do a tombola and we had great fun. Again a big thank you to Yorkshire Caravans and to everyone that came to take part.

Finding a forever home We were really busy at the Sanctuary up to Christmas which was wonderful. Lots of dogs and cats went to their new homes in time for them to enjoy their Christmas lunch. We are at last coming to the end of our new kennel refurb they are looking brilliant and will make such a difference to our Sanctuary. We would like to thank Adoption for Pets who have made this possible, together with Councillor Grainger who contributed to our first refurbishment programme. If anyone has a few hours to spare and enjoy dog walking why not make a New Year’s resolution to keep fit and help us by volunteering to dog walk. Again a Happy New Year and we hope to see you soon.

Name: Peppa Sex: Female Date into care: June 15 Age: 2 Years Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Some Lived with children: Yes Peppa has had to come into care with her buddy, Muffin, because the new baby in the family was allergic to them. She is a loving little cat but can be a little shy with strangers. All she needs is time to get to know you and you will see the cuddle-cat hiding beneath that tough exterior. She is best buddies with Muffin so a home together would be perfect but not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass her by, ask to meet her and you will see the sweetheart within.

Name: Whisky Sex: Female Date into care: Feb 15 Age on arrival: 18 Months Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: Yes When Whisky’s owner had to move she was unable to take her babies with her so contacted Mayflower for help. It was a sad day when she left Whisky and her buddy, Guinness, behind. Whisky is the more confident of the pair and is soon purring away and asking for cuddles. She has previously been a housecat but would possibly like to explore a secure garden. Although a home together would be perfect as they are best buddies, its not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass them by.

Are You Paying Care Home Fees? If you have assets exceeding ÂŁ23,250 the cost of care will need to be met by yourself. For some, this means selling the family home. However, many people who are in this position are not aware that funding may be available for them.

Will the NHS pay for my care? If the need for care primarily is a health need, YES In these circumstances the NHS are obligated to meet the care costs of the individual in full. This funding is known as continuing healthcare, and is sometimes abbreviated to CHC funding.

How can I receive this funding? It is difficult to secure continuing healthcare. Providing this funding to individuals is incredibly expensive for the NHS, in the same way it is incredibly expensive to pay privately. As a result it is regularly the case that the NHS attempt to apply a higher bar to satisfy than is set out in law and in the Department of Health literature pertaining to continuing healthcare. Many people who should be receiving in full to meet the cost of their care are not. It is estimated there are 100,000 in the UK presently paying for care when these costs should be met by continuing healthcare.

What can I do to find out if I am eligible for this funding? If you or your relative is paying for care and you believe there is a health need, then contact an expert member of our team today to discuss your options and find out how we can assist.

For a limited period, Guardian are offering the initial consultation and assessment free of charge. Typically saving up to ÂŁ1000 on solicitors fees.

Our final speaker for 2015 was Robert Potterton of Potterton's Nursery and Gardens in Nettleton near Caistor who treated us to a very enjoyable evening on Thursday 3rd December with 'A Special Nursery Challenge Quiz'. Some members were a little apprehensive about what to expect but we were not expected to churn out Latin names for plants and there was a wide range of subjects apart from naming plants. With interesting wildlife questions and some questions involving numerical guesses there were opportunities for everyone to win spot prizes which included lovely pots of bulbs.

Woodland Adventure at Tickhill Estfeld During the Autumn term the Reception Class were lucky enough to experience a Woodland Adventure Theme Day. Overnight our school field was transformed, becoming a Woodland Adventure station. Our pupils first took a walk around the village, collecting natural items, such as leaves, twigs, and conkers , which they then used as resources for a range of activities during the day. Once back at school the pupils used their found materials in activities such as woodland animal sculpting, leaf printing, bark rubbing, conker rolling and woodland art. Lunch was also themed; delicious and warming Woodland Stew and Gruffalo Crumble were the dishes of the day. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day and Mrs Slack, Mrs Ellison and Mrs Collier were very proud of all of the pupils’ work. We would like to thank all of those who helped on the day, especially Mr and Mrs Welborn who set up the canopies for us.

St Mary’s School Nativity time at St Marys Years One and Two at St Mary’s Primary School, Tickhill really enjoyed performing their Nativity play this year- which featured a visit by aliens who discovered the meaning of Christmas! Here are some quotes from the children who have written about their production

I n fi T r h I b

“Tuesday the 8th of December and Wednesday the 9th was our Christmas play. I really liked going on the stage. I was an angel. My favourite song was Well I Never!” Molly, Year One. “I loved the play we did yesterday and are doing today. I am an angel and we are celebrating and it is special.” Thomas, Year One. “I enjoyed being in our school play because it makes me smile.” Jamie, Year One. “I liked it when I go on stage because it is lovely and I am the donkey. I liked the three kings and the song Merry Christmas Everybody.” Grace S, Year One. Foundation stage performed a traditional Nativity tale. All children took part in the performance and they were amazing! Lots of parents and carers came to watch and it was a fantastic day! Here are what some of our children enjoyed the most: I loved singing clip clop that was the best... I loved being a sheep on the stage... we loved singing... I liked walking to Bethlehem and sitting on the hay (Mary and Joseph)... I loved dressing up in an angel costume...

All the children loved that their families came to watch them. 40

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Gardening resolutions I

’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions.

1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span.

2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.

3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy. 44

Tickhill Today

4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening. This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time.

5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7.

I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties. Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Forgive Dear Friends, and Forget! My two-month-old TV could not switch on for two nights so I had to call in the engineer. Interestingly, the engineer came in and just switched it on with the same remote control that I have used on many occasions to try to do the same. I was annoyed with myself and I had to explain to the engineer that it was the second experience in a month. Just after the engineer had left and I was trying to deal with my anger, I flipped the channel over and it landed on the ‘Victoria Derbyshire Show’. A news item ‘I forgave the driver who cost me my leg’ came up so I decided to sit on the sofa and watch. The comment was that, ‘a cyclist who lost her leg when she was hit by a skip lorry hugged and forgave the driver of the lorry’. Afterwards, as I was reflecting on the story, I was reminded of a similar story in Genesis in the bible. The story is told of a young man Joseph, whom most of us associate with his coat of many colours. His brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt because of his dreams. However, after many years, God helped him to become a prominent man in the political life in Egypt. Later on, these same brothers went into Egypt looking for food and by God’s doing, they found themselves in Joseph’s courtyard. Initially, they did not realise that they were in their brother’s house. Joseph had the chance for revenge and put them into prison but there was a twist. He introduced himself to his brothers, forgave them and later settled them in the best part of the land in Egypt. On Joseph’s part, reconciliation was achieved through his sincere and total forgiveness of his brothers for the evil they had committed against him. Forgiveness is a vital part of the Christian experience. It helps us to relate with God and become responsible to other people, even our enemies. I wonder if I can refer you to two of the many passages in the bible that talk about forgiveness. They are as follows: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15). Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour 50

and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). Yes! God has forgiven you of your past because of Jesus Christ and he wants you to make a fresh start in 2016. The power is in your hands now whether you want to forgive whoever had offended you or not. Joseph forgave his awful brothers and Victoria Lebrec, the cyclist, forgave the skip lorry driver who took her leg off. She claimed in the news item that she has set herself free from bitterness and resentment and hence, moved on. Likewise, Joseph told his brothers, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45: 5) God had been with Joseph in Egypt, and then God saved the lives of his whole family through him. I wonder whether you have realised that God may have taken you through your experiences so that you could lead other people to a better situation after forgiving the perpetrators. In doing so, you could have saved yourself and them from trouble. However, some situations may be very difficult and need time to heal. It may take months or years but forgiveness is still available. This year, may I suggest to you that you use the examples of Victoria Legrec and Joseph the dreamer, to bring reconciliation into your life and that of others so that you can be in a better position to make a great start. Have a blessed and prosperous New Year. Yours sincerely,

Slimming World members lose an amazing 3,300 stone since January 2015! This New Year thousands of people in Blyth, Bawtry, Tickhill and Rossington areas will be embarking on a bid to lose weight and get fit. And Slimming World Consultants in the area are urging dieters to ditch the fad diets and choose a weight-loss plan they can sustain. New research shows that UK weight-loss organisation Slimming World is the most popular and easiest plan to stick to in the long term. Nicky who runs a Slimming World group in Bawtry, says faddy diets aren’t the answer: “Lots of people start January with the best of intentions but by the end of the month so many of them have given up, defeated by hunger, boredom or feelings of deprivation. I want people to know that losing weight doesn’t have to be that way, that not all slimming attempts are doomed and not all ‘diets’ are the same. It’s easy to be wooed by the plans that promise the fastest loss, but it’s really important this New Year that slimmers think sensibly about which plan they choose and look at which offer the most chance of long-term success. Diets based on deprivation can be very unhealthy and are almost impossible to keep up, meaning you’re bound to throw in the towel and will probably be left feeling like a failure by February!” Christine who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group says the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan and get support to make lifestyle changes. And Jackie the Rossington consultant is urging slimmers to choose Slimming World after research by Marketing Week magazine, published this January, found that the organisation is the UK’s most popular way to lose weight. A separate recent YouGov poll of 2,000 slimmers who had tried one of the two most popular UK weight-loss clubs in the past two years also discovered people found Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan easier to follow and simpler to stick with in the long run. The YouGov survey found that 92% of respondents who were attending a Slimming World group said they didn’t feel hungry and 88% enjoyed being able to eat normal every day foods instead of being pushed to purchase ready meals or convenience foods.

Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan encourages members to satisfy their appetite on hundreds of healthy ‘Free Foods’, including fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs, pulses and fatfree dairy, freely without the need for weighing, counting and measuring. It means they can enjoy all their favourite meals just by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and still eat the same healthy dishes as the rest of their family. The beauty of Slimming World’s plan is that it addresses the psychological needs of slimmers: “When people think about losing weight they expect to feel hungry and deprived, but since it began in 1969 Slimming World’s plan has always been about helping people to lose weight without feeling like that. Human nature means that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so with Slimming World no foods, even high-fat snacks and alcohol, are banned, they’re just limited. Because you can satisfy your appetite on ‘Free Foods’ you don’t ever have to feel hungry and it’s easier to reduce the amount of unhealthy foods you’re eating so, over time with the right support, this new balanced way of eating becomes second nature” said Dani the Blyth consultant In fact getting support is as important as changing eating habits: “There’s no denying that changing the habits of a lifetime can be challenging and there will be times, perhaps when your weight loss slows down or a ‘bad week’ leads to a temporary gain, when it can be tempting to give up. That’s where getting support week in, week out to make changes and keep them up comes in. At Slimming World members develop the skills and tools to overcome the psychological and emotional challenges that every slimmer faces at some point, including learning to be kind to yourself and get ‘back on the horse’ when you do have a blip. Anyone who wants to lose weight this New Year will find a world of support at the their nearest Slimming World group” continued Christine. To join a Slimming World group near you, see the advert in this magazine or alternatively visit www.slimmingworld.com for more information. T

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM NEWS! I think your January Tickhill Today will actually arrive on your doorstep at the end of December – however, I am going to say Happy New Year to you all! I hope your Christmas has been without disaster. The smallest mishap seems to be a disaster at Christmas. How many things can go wrong with a turkey for instance? Not defrosted in time/not taken out of the freezer at all/the cat thought it was his ‘big’ present/the giblets remained inside while it cooked/it was burnt on the outside/it was raw on the inside …… every family has their own ‘turkey’ disaster story! In the Parish Room our ‘disasters’ were only inconvenient – the lift broke (the WI speaker who was stuck in it will never forget Tickhill!), the automatic door wasn’t automatic, the boiler was switched off by mistake (no hot water/no heating), the fridge was switched off resulting in some very warm wine, the dishwasher wasn’t emptied properly (very smelly), the warming trolley wasn’t emptied properly (noticed almost a week later by the Saturday Coffee ladies who ‘found’ the smell eventually!!), but we survived it all in 2015. We had a very busy year, with charity events, parties for young and old, christenings, funeral teas, soup lunches, classes – including yoga, ukulele, sewing, Slimming World – Quizes, Burns Night, Cashmere sale. One local family had a full Christmas lunch in early December. We participated in Tickhill Grand Prix, Scarecrow Day, Late Night Shopping, Christmas Carol service. The WI met in the Parish Room, and the Francophiles, and our Saturday Coffee Morning continued throughout the year. We had more children’s parties than ever in 2015. Our venue is perfect for so many occasions. What will you be booking for in 2016? Our lovely building can be dressed up or dressed down just as successfully. The kitchen is very well equipped. Our prices are very competitive. Our regular classes/events will be back to normal in January, including Ukulele class (Monday evening), Yoga (Tuesday evening), WI and Francophiles (first Wednesday in the month), Slimming World (Thursday evening), Coffee and Company (second Thursday in the month), Coffee Morning (every Saturday morning). We will be having another Parish Room Quiz Night with pie and peas on the 15th January, at 7.30 p.m. – ring Lesley on 01302 744600 to book your pie of choice. This event is usually sold out early so don’t delay! If you wish to book the Parish Room – for any occasion – please ring me on 07840 419763 Janice Birkinshaw T 54

Student Wins Local Prestigious Lions International Peace Poster Competition Caitlin Winfindale, a student at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College, has taken the first step to becoming an artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Warmsworth & Edlington Lions Club Caitlin's poster was among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasise the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. "I chose to design my poster about all the different religions in the world and the times there has been wars. Peace is really important in the world” the 12 year-old from Maltby said. The poster was selected by Lion Alan Doble the area Youth Officer and Lions President Anne Kelly for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Share Peace." Keith Binks, Headteacher at the college said "We are extremely proud of the artistic talent of the students here at the college, and the quality and thought put into this particular competition. Our co-operative values of social responsibility and caring for others, combined with our British values of Tolerance were demonstrated by all of the students. Well done to Caitlin on winning the heat." Anne Kelly Lions Club President said "I was very impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College and Caitlin in-particular. It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” “Caitlin’s poster advanced through to the district competition which was held at the Yorkshire Mining Museum on Saturday 21st November, where it received a distinction award." Anne said. T 56

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club. January again and time for New Year Resolutions. The trouble is that most resolutions are entirely forgotten by February (if not sooner!): something more permanent is needed. What about Probus? The Tickhill and Bawtry club has just celebrated its 20th anniversary and so must qualify for a degree of permanence. We are a friendly lot of retired professional and businessmen (we interpret those terms quite widely) who meet at 10.00am on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at the Millstone Hotel. A New Year resolution to come along to one of our meetings as a visitor could well tempt you to permanent membership. Each month we have a speaker, afterwards many of our members can be found in the bar and some stay on to lunch. You will be most welcome. Our programme for the next three months is as follows: 14th Jan. AGM and "Annual Review" by Steve Payne. (Sounds boring but won't be!) 28th Jan. "Air Ambulance" by Tracey Bull. 11th Feb. "Old Doncaster" by Malcolm Barnsdale. 25th Feb. "Inland waterways" by John Hoare. 10th Mar. "Don't you know who I am?" by Peter Slater. 24th Mar. Ladies lunch. (Members and their partners only). Local History Society

Did you know why four poster beds of the Tudor and Stuart period always had a top cover as well as curtains? Well, I didn’t either but it all came down to vermin. Houses of that period were full of rats and mice and bedrooms often had holes in the wall to allow access for owls. The owls caught the vermin but also left their droppings about - hence the covers over the bed to protect the occupants. This was just one of the many interesting facts in David Bostwick’s humorous talk to the Society in November. Thank you David for a most informative and enjoyable evening.

The upstairs room at the Millstone was full for our annual Christmas Social on December 10th. After a superb” pie, peas chips and puds” meal provided by Molly and her staff at the Millstone we enjoyed a light hearted romp through history entitled “So you think you’re British do you?” by John Taylor. He demonstrated that 58

without immigrants over the last 2500 years Britain would not be the developed country it is today. When they arrived the immigrants, Romans, Vikings, Saxons, Normans to name but a few, had not usually been welcome but over time they and their descendants had contributed much to our society. A thought provoking talk with immigration high on today’s political agenda. Thank you John. Our next meeting will be on January 21st when Adrian Ecclestone will talk about the Zsar’s Bones and perhaps throw some more light on an enduring mystery. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom at 7.30pm (doors open 7,00pm) and visitors will be welcome. A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

Tickhill and District Lions May we start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held at Tickhill Cricket Club on December 15th. To the companies, listed below, who donated prizes, the many friends who also provided items, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and, of course, to all of you who purchased the tickets -thank you very much. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. It is wonderful to see the looks on the faces of the young children when they meet Santa. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that

TICKHILL ACOUSTIC MUSIC NIGHTS If you enjoy music, like playing a musical instrument & singing, then you are welcome to start the New Year by joining us in the pub at the Scarbrough Arms. We are a group of locals from Tickhill & the surrounding villages who have been getting together for over a decade to play the music we like in a friendly, informal pub atmosphere. There is an eclectic mix of old and modern, examples being folk, country, blues, sixties, popular, classical, and there is no restriction on style or genre, even humour is permitted. The acoustic guitar is very popular, but other instruments like the mandolin, banjo, flute, fiddle, ukulele, concertina, accordion, keyboard, bodhran, tin whistle, melodeon and harmonica have been played, some regularly and some rarely. The music nights are occasions to be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and everyone is equally respected and appreciated whether a beginner or professional. Singing and drinking has been part of our history and culture for centuries. So help us to make these nights even better and keep the tradition going for another decade by coming along. You will receive a friendly welcome. Second & Last Tuesday, from 8.00pm Scarbrough Arms, Tickhill Contact: Email mjthorns@yahoo.co.uk Tel. Mike 01302 953975 T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Tickhill Town Council - JANUARY 2016

Happy New Year from Tickhill Council Tickhill Town Council is pleased to announce The Winners of the Awards for 2015 Young Person of the Year Award - Reid Wass Community Award - John Marsden Alison Award - Sarah Beevers Best Dressed Window - Small World Travel Starting in 2016 it is requested that nominations be made on a prepared form which will be available from the Library in early February. This will ensure that each nomination is received in the same format and ease the process for everyone concerned. All nominations are judged independently, the Council having no input. The Trophies have been donated by members of the Public who have also supplied a bursary to enable a small gift in recognition of the Achievement to be presented. The Christmas 2016 Best Dressed Window Competition will be judged at Late Night Opening and Christmas lights switch on event which will hopefully take the pressure off the businesses to have their windows dressed ahead of time. Tickhill Town Council would like to say ‘Thank You’ to Pipers Car Sales for supporting the Litter Picker and a ‘Thank You’ to Cllr N. Cannings for collecting the litter around Tickhill and keeping the streets clean. In April 2015 Pipers Car Sales decided to support Tickhill’s litter picker by providing personal protective equipment. It has been a big cost saving to the Town Council. The volunteer litter picker has collected a staggering 3129 bags of litter/rubbish plus a further 1468 un62

bagged dog fouling from around the main Streets in the centre of Tickhill. 3129 bags at a modest 4kg per bag (many bags over 4kg) equates to over 12.5 tonnes! Added to what the local authority DMBC collect from the rest of Tickhill! It is good to note that the Council at one time received repeated complaints about litter but since Nigel has taken on the task it has been reduced to NIL, with only compliments now being received. A huge thank you to Nigel for his dedicated hard, however, all this could not be accomplished without the support of D.M.B.C’s litter team who remove the litter and Pipers for supplying Nigel with a good warm waterproof coat for the winter and High Viz vests in the summer.
