Welcome to

the November 2015 edition How sad would be November if we didn’t have knowledge of the Spring? Edwin Way Teale The year is racing by, Halloween is upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner! I have spent several days in October accompanying my son as he visits University Open Days. It has brought back many happy memories of my own time at University. Many aspects of campuses remain the same as they were in the 90’s although it has been apparent everywhere we have been, that huge investment has been made in buildings and facilities – not least the student accommodation, where ensuites are now the expected norm! I mentioned last month that we had been shortlisted for four business awards at the 2015 National Magazine Publisher’s Awards. If you follow our facebook page you will already know that I was thrilled to come home with 2 awards that night. Our newly redesigned website won ‘Best Website’ and the cartoon video that features on the website also won an award in the ‘Best Promotional Video’ category. It is lovely to receive some recognition within the industry that we are doing something right, and spending time with so many other fabulous magazine producers, many of whom have become my friends is one of the highlights of my working year. The December issue will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th November. The December magazines always contain the most community content of the year, and as levels of submissions are already at a record high, I must urge you to get your items to me on time, so that I can ensure that sufficient space is available for everything. This does apply to advertising bookings too!

Best wishes, Paula x

Buttercross Needleworkers Following their exhibition in St Mary's Church in September, Buttercross Needleworkers were delighted to present a cheque for £450 to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. It was good to see so many people coming to view our work and we are grateful for their generous donations to such a worthwhile cause.

The November meetings, on the 4th and the 18th will focus firstly on Christmas decorations and then on the second block for the sampler quilt that we started last month. Visitors are welcome at our meetings which start at 7:30pm at the Scout Headquarters in St Mary's Road. T

Tickhill & District Lions Club This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 7th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive, with the evening organised jointly by our Lions Club and the Cricket Club. Entry is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets with all the proceeds going towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with the fireworks let off in 2 sessions, the first starting at 6pm. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers, and with the cricket club bar open, the bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. There will be a barbecue selling locally supplied burgers and sausages. Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with a wide range of super prizes on offer. Tickets will be available on our stall at the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 26th November and a number of retail outlets round the district. The draw will take place on Tuesday 15th December, by which time the Christmas float will have transported Santa round Harworth & Bircotes and will have started on his visits to Rossington. Make sure you don’t miss him. A full list of float dates and start times will appear in next month’s magazine. T

A Message for Everyone Interested in the Piano Learning how to play the piano can be a very lonely process, taking years of dedicated study.

All types of music will be welcome (Classics, Modern, Popular, Folk and Jazz).

Often when progress is made and a repertoire is beginning to develop, a pianist finds it difficult to perform in front of any type of audience because of nerves and lack of confidence.

The essential message is that it is the members who perform and present the music.

We propose to start a club to provide a small friendly group of people of all ages, with an interest in the piano, to encourage and support performance, and a venue at which pianists of all levels can meet people with a similar interest. Everyone is welcome, it does not matter if you are unable to read music, have passed a Grade 1 exam or hold a Diploma or Degree in Music, or simply have no interest in gaining qualifications and just like to play the piano or keyboard. Members may elect not to play but just to listen and provide moral support. However, the number of members wishing to play will be strictly limited to ensure all have an adequate opportunity to play.

We also hope to have a social aspect to the club, and to arrange club visits to various venues, possibly to play some music at hotels, piano manufacturers, restorers and large retailers. The Club membership will play a major role in determine the activities and interests of the piano club, and when, where and how often we meet. So it is important that you attend this first meeting and have your say if you are able to. If you can’t or haven’t received your magazine in time, then don’t worry simply contact David Kay on 01302 538537 for more information and to register your interest. Please come and join us at the first meeting of our club: 7:45pm on Tuesday 27th OCTOBER 2015 At St Wilfrid’s Church, Church Lane, Cantley T

DRAWN TOGETHER AGAIN he took up the challenge of opening up his gallery in Bawtry, where he is only too willing to give assistance and offer information, not only his own work, but that of many leading artists in the vast range of traditional, contemporary and affordable art he has on display. It was here where he met up with artist Margaret Clarkson who, although born in Rotherham, moved into Doncaster some forty five years ago teaching art in Doncaster schools.

Doncaster has featured predominantly in the working lives of two Yorkshire born artists, John Bird and Margaret Clarkson. They are drawn together yet again at the John Bird Studio in Bawtry on Saturday November 7th. John Bird is a Doncaster born local lad who spent four years at Doncaster Rovers before moving on as a player and then as a manager. After leaving his football career behind, John pursued his long term interest as an artist. He had previously set up his own gallery whilst in Newcastle which he ran successfully for eight years. He returned to Doncaster and many will remember his unit at the Doncaster Corn Exchange. A few years ago 12

She has been involved in art education for over fifty years. Teaching art, giving demonstrations to a wide variety of groups, where her sense of humour and ability to involve an audience, made her illustrated talks very popular. She set up and ran her own gallery for ten years and eventually started publishing her own work and having it distributed nationally. Her work has been featured in many national, regional, and local magazines and book illustrations. Margaret’s work, by way of original watercolour paintings and limited edition prints is reminiscent of life spent in and around her Yorkshire home during the 1940s / 50s and every picture certainly does tell a story. Whilst she considers her work is not strictly autobiographical, it is certainly based on her childhood memories. “I think the reason the paintings are so popular is they bring back happy memories. I feel I have been successful and achieved so much, particularly in times like we live in today, if I can bring humour and fond memories with my artwork,” she said. Margaret’s art work is always on display and each year they have a successful Open Day at the John Bird Studio on Dower House Square, Bawtry. She is looking forward to this Year’s Open Day on Saturday November 7th between 10am and 4pm. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Estfeld School– Tickhill Estfeld Basketball Triumph

Congratulations to Tickhill Estfeld’s Year 4 basketball teams who returned form the Edlington Pyramid Basketball Tournament, triumphant. Both the boys’ and the girls’ squads took second place in their respective leagues, which made them overall winners of the tournament and recipients of the shield. This was really team effort as it was the combined points total of the boys’ and girls’ squads that determined the winning school. We are also especially proud of the behaviour and conduct of our pupils on the day as they were well-behaved, courteous and respectful of other players and the adults in charge. Well done to them all for being such wonderful ambassadors of

St Mary’s School Perlethorpe September ‘1940’ On the 13th September Scarbrough and Foljambe received a letter from Mr Keith Rider, Billeting Officer under the Emergency Powers Act of 1939 informing us we were to be evacuated to the village of Perlethope in Nottinghamshire. This was due to the heavy bombing we were suffering from the German Luftwaffe. The next morning we left the school wearing our best clothes bought with our clothing coupons and with our evacuation label clearly showing. We had a lot to carry with our luggage, gas masks, packed food, identity cards and teddy bears. When we arrived at Perlethorpe we were billeted with various people in the village. Some people were unlucky and placed with people who used them as slaves and washed their mouths out with soap if they were naughty. However, although they had to work hard, others were treated and fed well. They even had more than their ration card allowed! While we were busy finding out about the invasion of Poland last year Sarge came rushing in to report that they had found a parachute and an identity card! Even more exciting, they were German and a spy was on the loose! Sarge asked for our help and we went out in his Army truck to try to catch him. We were unlucky that we didn’t find the spy but it was really exciting to travel that fast as we don’t get much chance to do this because of petrol rationing. Sarge is still looking and promises to let us know when he catches him. Now that we have returned to our homes because the danger has passed, we can look back on our time away from home as a World War 2 Adventure. Some of us can’t wait until the war is over and we can visit our friends in Perlethorpe and celebrate winning the war against Hitler. 20

HMI Visit We are delighted to say that HMI’s verbal feedback from their visit on 24 September 2015 clearly stated that the School Improvement Plan is not only fit for purpose but having significant impact on improvement across the college. He also confirmed that Sir Thomas Wharton Community College is making reasonable progress towards removal from a serious weaknesses category and that the strengths of the college far outweigh further areas for development. We would like to give a huge thank you to all the parents who provided such posi ve feedback to HMI through the online parental view, to our students who displayed and spoke with such maturity and pride in their college, to the commitment and drive of our governing body to secure improvement, to our external partners for their challenge and support and to the efforts of our hard working and dedicated staff. We s ll have a long way to go on our journey to outstanding, however everyone can take confidence from this feedback in the knowledge we are doing the right things and making significant progress.

In memory of Neil White Jack, Isabelle and I would like to thank all our friends and family for the love and support we have received since Neil passed away. He was a true inspiration, courageous and had such a positive attitude to life. His devotion to his family means Jack, Isabelle and I will have fond memories of all the things we have achieved together in a very small time as our little family. I know Neil has left a mark on many people's lives who got to know him and this has shown through all the beautiful cards and messages we have received. Remembrance and Memorials

Dearr Friends, November is a month of memorials and remembrance. It includes All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day, and Remembrance Day, among others. Memorials help us to connect with our past. Remembering the past can help us or haunt us. It depends on what part of the past comes into our memory and how we have lived with it. Some of the memories can be very unpleasant and may need us to attend to them in order to move on with our lives. On the other hand, some memories encourage us and help us to rekindle the hope we have for the future. These memories mostly strengthen us in our endeavours. In my local dialect, the month of November is called ‘ ’ (pronounced ‘o-ba-re-fiw’), meaning ‘a life of beauty’. Talking about lives of beauty reminds us of people who have sacrificed their lives for our good. Such lives motivate most of us. In Christianity, we are encouraged to remember Jesus Christ, who died to save us from sin. As part of remembering Jesus’ death on the cross, Christians frequently meet to share the ‘Eucharist’. Other people call it the “Lord’s Supper” or ‘Holy Communion”. It is a time when we share bread and wine together. It is also a time when we are reminded of God’s love for the world. He loved us to the extent of sacrificing his son, Jesus Christ, for us. Moreover, the Lord’s Supper reminds us that each of us is united with God through his love. Hence, we are to love one another as God has loved us. 26

Tickhill Today

Talking of loving one another, I wonder if I can suggest that you make the following prayer yours. Bruce Prewer wrote it and it says: “God of Jesus and our God, mindful of all those choice souls who have gone on ahead of us, teach us to follow their example to the best of our ability: • to feed the poor in body or spirit, • to support and comfort the mourners and the repentant, • to encourage the meek and stand with them in crises, • to affirm those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, • to cherish and learn from the merciful, • to be humbled by, and stand with, the peacemakers”. This month, as you celebrate the events of remembrance and memorials, I wonder if you can take a moment and pause to reflect on how the examples of those who have gone before us can encourage you to love another person. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely, Rev. ZZZzzzzzzz… Following on from last month’s article on mattresses, here’s what you need to know about pillows to add the final ingredient for a good night’s sleep… The purpose of a pillow is to keep your head, neck and spine in line. The thickness of your ideal pillow will depend on the size of your frame and the position you sleep in. If you sleep on your back you will only need a slim pillow just to prevent your head and neck from tipping back. Side sleepers will need a thicker pillow to fill the space between your shoulder and the side of your head. The bigger your frame, the larger this gap will be. Sleeping on your tummy is best avoided as it is impossible to keep your head and neck in a neutral position. It’s actually quite difficult for us to accurately determine the position of different body parts so the best way to judge a pillow is to adopt your usual sleep position and then ask someone else to look and see if your head, neck and spine are still in line. Pillows generally last 3-5 years, but there is a quick test to see if it’s still up to the job. Fold a feather pillow in half, squeezing out all the air. When you let go, it should spring back into shape. Fold synthetic pillows in half and place a small weight on it (decent paperback or a trainer). The pillow should fling off the weight as it springs back to shape! Sleep well!

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Our September speaker Neil Timm from Binbrook, Lincs. is a fern specialist who has won gold awards at major shows around the country over a number of years. With his great knowledge he is well qualified to speak about ‘The Flower Show – The Experiences of a Nursery Man’ and he provided a very interesting evening which made us more aware that preparing for and entering shows is an expensive exercise. As has been our practise since 2008 our ‘November’ meeting will be delayed a week until Thursday December 3rd to avoid clashing with the Late Night Shopping evening when the Christmas lights will be switched on. Robert Potterton from Potterton’s Nursery, Caistor will be giving us ‘A Special Nursery Challenge Quiz’ with a bit of luck there may be Country Market mince pies! Meetings start 7.15pm. 2 BRAND NEW YOGA CLASSES Due to the popularity of our current Yoga Class we are very pleased to inform you that we have 2 BRAND NEW classes running NOW.

Monday 9.30-11am Bawtry Methodist Church Friday 5.45-7pm The Millstone Tickhill Our current class is Monday 5.15-6.45pm The Millstone Tickhill You will see lots of benefits from attending one of our classes, you’ll notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, seemingly impossible poses will become possible. You’ll also probably notice that aches and pains start to disappear. That’s no coincidence. Tight hips can strain the knee joint due to improper alignment of the thigh and shinbones. Tight hamstrings can lead to a flattening of the lumbar spine, which can cause back pain. And inflexibility in muscles and connective tissue, such as fascia and ligaments, can cause poor posture. Your head is like a bowling ball—big, round, and heavy. When it’s balanced directly over an erect spine, it takes much less work for your neck and back muscles to support it. Move it several inches forward, however, and you start to strain those muscles. Hold up that forwardleaning bowling ball for eight or 12 hours a day and it’s no wonder you’re tired. And fatigue might not be your only problem. Poor posture can cause back, neck, and other muscle and joint problems. As you slump, your body may compensate by flattening the normal inward curves in your neck and lower back. This can cause pain and degenerative arthritis of the spine. Apart from the obvious aseptic benefits, the strength training that yoga offers protect us from conditions like Arthritis, Osteoporosis and back pain, and help prevent falls in the older active adult. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up. By taking the joints through their full range of motion in Yoga class, areas of cartilage that normally aren’t used are rebuilt thus preventing and neglect of areas of cartridges which can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like worn out brake pads. Spinal disks—the shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves— crave movement. That’s the only way they get their nutrients. If you’ve got a well-balanced Yoga practice with plenty of backbends, forward bends, and twists, 36

Tickhill Today

you’ll help keep your disks supple. Added to this, your yoga practice will increase your blood flow, helping to oxygenate tissues and thin the blood, contributing to the prevention of blood circulation disorders and heart disease. In-crease in lymph drainage helps the lymphatic system fight infection, destroy cancerous cells, and dispose of the toxic waste products of cellular functioning. Yoga For Men is really taking off - with lots of celebrities developing a daily practice and we gladly welcome men to our classes. So if you are a sportsman with an awareness of tight muscles such as hamstrings and shoulders, you are extremely welcome to join us. When you build strength through yoga, you balance it with flexibility. If you just went to the gym and lifted weights, you might build strength at the expense of flexibility. The way to bearing practices in our yoga classes also help prevent Osteoporosis. The relaxation element of our Yoga Classes will help to lower you blood pressure and help you de-velop a sense of perspective on your problems. Chronically high levels of stress hormones which modern lifestyles can cause will undermine memory and may lead to more long standing changes in brain chemistry resulting in depression and contributing to more serious illness, such as Cancer. Consistent yoga practice improves depression and leads to a significant increase in serotonin levels and a decrease in the levels of monoamine oxidase (an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters) and cortisol. During the meditation aspects of your class, you will learn to increase concentration as well as learning to be fully present in the moment which helps develop an "attitude of gratitude" and an overall love life! THE SHEFFIELD SINGERS At 7.30pm on Thursday 17 December 2015 The Sheffield Singers return to start your Christmas with our usual feast of music and readings. Rachel Copley will be at the helm and Leeds musician, Daniel Gordon, will accompany us on the organ as well as treat us to some solo playing. We are delighted to welcome back one of our former Members, Sue Morton, who will entertain us again with seasonal readings. At the interval we will be warmed up with wine and mince pies, dispensed by our usual sommeliers Patrick Andrews and his invaluable team, to whom we are most grateful. Followers of The Sheffield Singers (most of whom are members of Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus) will be delighted to know that we have a new CD of Christmas music, "Awake, Arise!". It contains many of the carols you have enjoyed at our Tickhill concerts including the spine tingling "O Holy Night" which is arranged by our remarkable music director, Darius Battiwalla. The world famous Black Dyke Band also features on the CD. It will be on sale at the concert for £12.99 and will make a lovely Christmas gift. JANET BOWER T

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Garden Bonfires November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn

plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke.

Bonfire Safety Check-list • Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. • Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. • Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy—just in case • Don’t leave the fire unattended. • Keep small children and pets out of the way. • Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting.

Tickhill Music Society - Tickhill Music Society Friday, y 13th November 2015 at 8.00 p p.m. Co ce t Review Concert e e St. Mary’s Primary School The first concert of the Winter season was held in the airy spaciousness of St. Mary’s Parish Church. Our guest artist was the Sub-Organist from Leeds Parish Church, David Houlder. He began with Suite Gothique by Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897) a four movement work with an Introduction of stately chords, a jolly choral, a placid third movement and a march-like Toccata to end. Next came J.S.Bach with a tuneful Cantata 156 and the popular ‘Sheep may safely graze’

Master Tallis’s Testament by Herbert Howells (18921983) had three verses starting quietly and getting louder. Rondoletto by the Lancastrian Ernest Tomlinson was a Country Dance tune in the Light Music tradition. The first half ended with the theme tune from ‘Songs of Praise‘ commissioned by the BBC in 1980. After the Interval more theme music from more recent ‘Songs of Praise’ programmes. This was a lively piece by the aptly named Robert Prizeman and has been used since 1986. The Prelude and Fugue in C Minor by Vaughan Williams was not in his popular pastoral style but a much more robust affair, the Fugue being a complex double fugue. Departing somewhat from the Western music tradition, the piece by the Nigerianborn Fela Sowande, “Obangiji” had a bold introduction followed by some complex harmonies. The contemporary composer Derek Bourgeois wrote his Serenade for his own wedding. It had a jaunty tune followed by some intricate variations rising to a climax and then fading away. Mr Houlder explained that parts were in complex 11/8 time. In fact, several times Mr Houlder gave us some helpful comments about the music. The concert ended with Fantasia & Ground Bass by Sir George Dyson. This had free-flowing variations which climbed to a real mountain of sound giving a triumphant end to a splendid concert. The season has got off to a splendid start! Philip Mottram T Ph 52

Collection for Refugees The children of St. Mary's, the children of Estfeld and the congregation of St. Mary's Church have had a collection for the refugees in Europe, and were able to send a van stuffed with clothes, food, toiletries and even a pram to needy families in Calais and Hungary. It was a lovely opportunity for the schools to think about the plight of others, and to involve themselves in something topical. It's also developed into links with other, more local charities, and we are going to be able to make donations to the homeless of Doncaster, too.

Tickhill and District

Local History Society

Our AGM on September 17th was something different, well perhaps not the AGM itself, nor even the most interesting talk on the Tinsley Rolls, medieval documents from Tinsley Manor near Sheffield which have recently been examined by an unlikely group including Sheffield University, Wessex Archaeology and enthusiastic pupils from Tinsley Junior School. In part these showed the importance of Tickhill in medieval times since annual returns from Tinsley Manor had to be made to Tickhill Castle. The something different was the buffet supper which followed, first class food and first class organisation thanks to Deli 28 and Dorothy Bradley respectively. An evening to remember! Thanks to Tickhill Together chaired by John Marsden the town celebrated the Queen becoming our longest ever reigning monarch by a display of Commonwealth flags over shops and by the very popular Queens Concert in St Mary’s Church on September 19th. The History Society played its part in these celebrations

by taking photographs of each of the flags and at the concert itself. These photographs together with information sheets about each of the Commonwealth countries are now on the History Society website (www.tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk) under Local History – PHOTO TOPICS - Celebration of Reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Thanks to Steve Payne for taking most of the photos and organising this record. For those who prefer to read hard copy Rosemary Chappell has collated the information sheets into a book available to read in the Library. Our next meeting will be on Thursday November 19th when David Bostwick will talk about “Beds and Bedtime in the Tudor/Stuart Period”. An interesting comparison with today perhaps? As usual the meeting will be held inthe Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate, stating at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome.

SANTA DASH, Tickhill

Children’s disability charity, Brainwave, is organising a 5k Santa Dash taking place on the morning of Saturday 5th December 2015 from Tickhill Cricket Club. As a fun run, it is not a timed event and runners of all abilities (including walkers) are welcome to take part. The Santa Dash is the first fundraising event that Brainwave has undertaken in Yorkshire. Brainwave helps children living with disabilities and special needs to achieve greater independence. The children have a range of conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, genetic disorders and developmental delay. All proceeds raised from the event will support local children. Amelia Poppy, is aged two and lives in Tickhill. She lives with a genetic condition known as Koolen de Vries Syndrome. Brainwave has developed an

exercise programme tailored for Amelia. According to mum, Claire, “Amelia has benefited greatly from the brainwave programme; she has made amazing progress with her mobility, communication skills and overall development. Through attending Brainwave we, as her parents, felt assured that Amelia was receiving the right therapy to optimise her potential.” Richard Clarke of Brainwave enthused about the event, “The Santa Dash will be brilliant fun. There will be Christmas music as people gather for the run. There will be a special appearance by the ‘real Santa’ to hand medals to all the runners. Afterwards there will be refreshments in the Cricket Club. It is a brilliant way to help local children, like Amelia.” Runner registration is £15 per adult and £10 per child (up to 13). Santa Suits and runner medals will be provided to all participants. Team packages are also available for local businesses to take part. Runner registration forms are available at KSM Dry Cleaners & Card Shop in Tickhill, and also available online via the Charity website: Runner registration forms are available at KSM Dry Cleaners & Card Shop in Tickhill, or you can enter online at https://brainwave.cloudvenue.co.uk/ yorkshiresantadash T

Tickhill Town Council - NOVEMBER 2015

This month sees the turning on of the Christmas lights on the late night shopping evening. Tickhill Town Council will be announcing the winner of the Best Dressed Window competition at this event. On this evening I personally start looking forward to the Carol service on Christmas Eve. A few years ago whilst in attendance at the Carol Service a gentleman asked me why we were all standing there on such a cold night. My reply was “because we can and because we live in such a warm and friendly community”. Later standing on the Buttercross steps with our late Mayor I knew what it was all about as in every direction crowds filled the streets. The Town Council strive for an enriched community, sometimes getting knocked back along the way, but they work hard for Tickhill helping it to grow from strength to strength. Tickhill Town Council would like to say a special thank you to members of our community for organising such wonderful events throughout the year. There is the Horticultural Show, the Tickhill Grand Prix Cycle Race, Tfest, The Scarecrow Festival, the Scouts Gala, the Celebration for Queen Elizabeth’s Reign, the endless streams of coffee mornings at the Parish Room and Methodist Church, the Friday market and Paula for this publication, plus Tickhill in Bloom which providing such wonderful floral displays throughout the year. Only a few have been mentioned, the list is endless, but thank you all for making Tickhill what it is. Tickhill Town Council has received an anonymous request for details of which charities have benefited from some of these events. Unfortunately the Council is unable to respond to anonymous correspondence. These

events are run independently of the Council. Obviously the Council supports the events morally but has no financial input or control over them. They are community led, therefore the council suggests the author of the anonymous request contacts the groups who organised the events in question. Over the next few months tree planting on Bawtry Road will commence and the avenue of trees will be restored to their former glory. Already one fifth of the trees have been lost to decay and old age. Tickhill Town Council reminds you that this project is D.M.B.C. led and Tickhill Town Council are supporting the project in order to preserve the avenue of trees. October saw radical changes at the Council in Tickhill with a complete restructure of the working month. Commencing from October there will now be two scheduled Council meetings per month, falling on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday. The meetings will start at 7.30pm and there will be “Public Participation” in the body of the meeting before Planning. This gives anyone the opportunity twice each month to come along and have a say. On a totally different note please could the Council mention the antisocial behaviour that has raised its head again at the Pavilion and recreation ground? If your son or daughter is the one of those involved in the “drugs den” ask them to look out for the police. They have been informed. If you would like to make bookings at the Pavilion would you please contact Jamie on 07591 179658

Local boy lives the BMX dream A teenager from Balby who is a future star of British Cycling has been accepted onto a prestigious athletes’ support scheme. Nathan Wood (14), who travels the world BMX racing and has recently won a major national title, has been enrolled onto Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust’s Talented Athlete Support Scheme (TASS) Nathan, who attends Sir Thomas Wharton Community College, said: “I began BMX racing in 2009 and I really enjoy it – it has taken me all over the world. This year I won the National Series for Male 15 year olds which is a series of races throughout the UK organised by British Cycling. I have also attended several European meetings in France, Holland and Belgium and am currently European number two. I attended the worlds in Belgium and become world number six on my 24 inch wheel cruiser bike” “It’s a really exciting time because I am also on the Olympic development Apprentice Programme with British Cycling and train in Manchester every two weeks with my coach at the National Cycling Centre so to be accepted on TASS at home in Doncaster is incredible. It means I have access to the top quality facilities at DCLT while I am at home which will really help me with my training especially through the winter months. “It’s great to have the support of the

people of Doncaster as I look to achieve my aspirations in BMX racing. A representative of the Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to help Nathan who is an incredible talent and were more than thrilled to enrol him on to our athlete support scheme. We hope we can play our part to help Nathan achieve his BMX dreams. It is important we support local, homegrown sporting talent who can fly the flag for Doncaster and we are really looking forward to seeing how far Nathan can go.” The scheme was introduced by Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) in 2012 in a bid to support local athletes who represent Great Britain at national or international level by providing free access to the Trust’s facilities. For more information about the Scheme, visit: www.dclt.co.uk

New Art Class at Wadworth The Braithwell Art Class has now moved. We are now meeting every Tuesday afternoon at 1.00pm until 3.00pm at Wadworth Parish Hall. We sadly have out grown the Masters House at Braithwell. When we are all attending there can be up to 14 of us. The price of the sessions remains the same at £3.00 and includes tea/coffee and biscuits/cakes. The group has the opportunity to be supported by a tutor or for individuals to do their own thing. The group is good at sharing their skills and ideas and everyone is most welcome. The group is attending the NEC Birmingham on November the 5th to see the Alive Art Materials along with the Crafts for Christmas, Stitching and Sewing, and Hobby Crafts Exhibitions. We have a few places left if anyone would like to join us. The cost is £21.00 to include Mini Coach Travel and entrance to all three exhibitions. For more information on class content or the trip contact Janet Greenwood on 01709 812417 T
