Estfeld School–

Fond Farewells at Estfeld The end of the school year seems to come around more quickly every year – none more so than this year. As always we bid a fond farewell to our Y6 pupils, most of whom have been with us for the past seven years. They have become 32 accomplished young people, of whom we are very proud, and who are ready to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead of them. This year our pupils are headed to a total of ten different secondary schools and we look forward to hearing of their success in the future. Good luck to them all! We also had to bid a very sad farewell to our Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Jane Driver who retired from teaching at the end of term. Mrs Driver began working as a teacher for Doncaster Local Authority in September 1976 and has worked at our school since the doors first opened in September 1978. As a member of the school’s leadership team and as a school governor Jane has been instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of the school, ensuring its success and high standards.

Tickhill Today

Over the years that Mrs Driver has taught at Estfeld she has inspired pupils and helped them to experience success in so many ways. She has had a significant impact on the learning of pupils throughout the school and many people in Tickhill will have been taught by her. Her commitment to her pupils has been relentless and highly visible – what memorable experiences her pupils have had, most importantly every day in class, but also in the many visits to Northumberland over the years. Mrs Driver has also been a loyal and supportive colleague and mentor to many. During her time at Estfeld, Mrs Driver has also formed good relationships with many parents and members of the Tickhill community, and worked in partnership with the Home and School Association, demonstrating her commitment to developing the school, for the benefit of the pupils. Mrs Driver shall certainly be missed after 37 years of service to the school, its pupils and the local community. We congratulate her on such a long and successful career!

St Mary’s School Leavers Statements James Eaton. On my first day I can remember at dinner time, I finished my lunch and wanted to turn my tray around. I didn’t know I had to put my hand up so every time someone walked past me, I tried to get their attention. I ended up not getting my pudding and I sat there for twenty minutes! I also once dressed up as Snow White. One of the best memories is PGL. It was funny and a good time with my mates. I am looking forward to going to Hall Cross next year. I would like to thank the banter squad and the teachers for making our time at St Mary’s worthwhile. Seb Durdy. My first memory at St Mary’s is at Pre School where I made my first two friends, Ryan and Eliot. We used to race around the playground on little tricycles, running over people’s feet. One thing I have enjoyed about St Mary’s is going on all of the school trips. My favourite was definitely PGL because it was fun and we did lots of different activities. I am looking forward to moving to Secondary School but I will miss St Mary’s. Harvey Thomas. I have enjoyed my time at St Mary’s. My best memory is when Seb introduced me to all my friends that I now have. If I didn’t have my friends, I would be lost. My other memory is when we went to PGL. However, it is time to move on now. Bye St Mary’s. Sophie Gregory. I remember when I started at St Mary’s. I used to like playing Pirates with Chloe. I am grateful to my brothers for helping me to make friends. I have changed at St Mary’s by learning to do maths I couldn’t do before. I am excited to leave but will miss a few people. Montana Smith. I remember when I joined St Mary’s in Year 3. At first, I was really nervous and shy. I thought I would never fit in but everyone was really kind and I made friends easily. I have enjoyed going to all the sports tournaments and making friends with Lacey, Chloe and Olivia. They have made my time at St Mary’s really enjoyable. They made me really welcome and so have my teachers. Olivia Thomas. I came to this school in Year 2. My favourite memory is PGL. I would like to thank all the teachers and my friends for making my years at St Mary’s fun and enjoyable. Lacey Walton. I have loved my stay at St Mary’s. I have enjoyed all the tournaments. I have changed a lot since I was five years old. I was shy

although I am not now. I want to say a big thank you to all the teachers at St Mary’s and to all my class. Chloe Turner. I can remember in Nursery when I used to hide in the big caterpillar so I didn’t have to go home. I enjoyed going to PGL and doing the activities. I am excited about leaving and going to a new school. I would like to thank my Mum and Dad for helping me. Camran Cassar. I have had a great time at St Mary’s with loads of memories. One of them is when I was in Reception and I cut my hair because I had finished my work and was bored! I really enjoyed the Whitby and PGL trips as I had a really good time! I have also enjoyed playing football and winning tournaments such as the swimming and Golden Boot. I would like to thank all my friends as they have been fantastic. I would also like to thank the teachers for helping me. Thanks also Mum and Dad for sending me here! Mack Warne. I have liked my time at St Mary’s. I have liked playing football with people I would not have met if it wasn’t for school. I am happy about leaving and looking forward to Hall Cross. I would like to say thank you to the banter squad and the teachers who have made school so good. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for paying for me to go to PGL which I loved. Jack Howle. I can remember when I first started St Mary’s and playing ‘Sleeping Beauty’. I accidentally knocked the castle down. It was funny. I have got to admit that I don’t really like learning and teachers can be annoying sometimes but I enjoy talking to my friends. I have enjoyed their company. Recently, Years 5 and 6 went to PGL and it was brilliant. I also went on a cricket tournament and I am glad that I took part. I feel quite nervous about leaving. However, I am also excited. Henry Swain. I remember on my first day, playing Sleeping Beauty as no-one else opted for it. I also remember my friend Leo. I didn’t know his second name so I called him Leo Jam Lips. I would like to thank all my friends for supporting me. Thomas Edwards. I can remember my first day. I told Gio my name and he fell asleep! I have enjoyed meeting all my friends. I am sad because I am leaving some of them but happy because I will have new friends. I have enjoyed all the trips especially PGL. I have improved my work, behaviour and attitude and I would like to say thank you to all the teachers for helping me throughout my years at St Mary’s.

“On The Record” 80 Years of history and music from the dancefloor for Doncaster’s Dancehall Doncaster is set to see its history retold in a major new stage show telling the story of the town’s people who have lived, loved and danced there. Dancehall charts the story of Doncaster from the dancefloor and will be performed at Cast, Doncaster from Friday 11 – Saturday 19 September. Bringing to life dance floor crazes and fashion trends from across the decades, Dancehall shares real hidden stories of Doncaster’s people. First dances at the Co-op Ballroom through to smooches at Top Rank. Boy on one side of the tracks meets girl from the other at Romeo and Juliet’s, whilst The Beatles play St James’s baths, the Sex Pistols storm Outlook and Bowie rocks Silver Street. Broken heels at Seventh Heaven to broken hearts at Parklands. From dancing through wars hoping soldiers would come home to keeping going through the strikes. It’s the moves made through sixteen Prime Minister’s and massive social change. It’s throwing down shapes when your horse won at the St Leger and Dads awkwardly dancing at that street party for the Queen’s coronation. It’s children in Saturday morning classes stepping on stage for the first time, and revellers on Saturday night floors having one last drink. With a soundtrack playing the music of our time, spanning the last eighty years and featuring a professional cast alongside a large community ensemble, Dancehall dances through the

decades to revive memories and relive Doncaster’s history. The show builds on the success of Cast’s first homegrown productions, The Glee Club in 2013 and Barry Hines’ Kes in 2014, incorporating stories from the heart of the community. Cast’s Director Kully Thiarai comments: “As with Barry Hines’ Kes and The Glee Club, professional performers join forces with community performers to shine a light on Doncaster and its story in a new production called Dancehall. Our research has brought us in touch with local historians and individuals who have been preserving stories that have become the foundation of the show.“ The show will begin in the mid-1930s reflecting how the prosperous market town of the 1920s and one of the largest coal mining areas of the early twentieth century developed through the war years, the rock and roll years, the Swinging Sixties, the strikes of the 1970s and ‘80s and into Tony Blair’s New Labour through to the present day. Tickets for Dancehall on Friday 11 - Saturday 19 September are £17 / £14 concessions available from Cast’s Box Office on 01302 303 959 or castindoncaster.com T

STRESS FRACTURES Stress fractures have been causing quite a lot of stress lately for some of our patients! A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone and may be referred to as a hair line fracture. A stress fracture is caused by overuse resulting in repetitive stress that builds overtime. Because of this, stress fractures are more common in runners and athletes but can also affect people who have previously been sedentary and suddenly begin exercising. Unsurprisingly, the bones most commonly affected are those that bear weight such as the shin bone (tibia) and bones of the foot (navicular and metatarsals). Stress fractures affect women more than men, are more prevalent in winter due to a reduction in vitamin D absorption and having osteoporosis increases your vulnerability. Symptoms include pain made worse by weight bearing and eased with rest, swelling and an area of tenderness over the bony area. An x-ray is the most obvious test to confirm the presence of a stress fracture though if the x-ray is taken very soon after the injury has occurred it may be too slight to be observed. Once the healing process is underway (say 2-3 weeks later), the x-ray can detect the laying down of new bone. Treatment is, somewhat frustratingly, rest. community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, the year is flying by and as our 3rd stage of building work is getting underway we must apologise for the dust and disruption which we hope isn’t affecting everyone too much. In July we held our annual dog show on Tickhill recreation ground. We all panicked at the start of the day as the heavens opened, but it turned out fine and sunny, thank goodness. Lots of people turned up to support us, showing off their beloved dogs and it was such a dream to see all of the dogs that had been re-homed looking well and happy. There was lots of stalls, not forgetting the amazing cake stalls which I could not resist. We also had a Doncaster Street collection in July, it was great to get some of our resident dogs out for the day too, they all behave impeccably. A big thank you to all the volunteers that turned up to chat to people and rattle tins. Likewise thank you Doncaster for your support it is always heart-warming to listen to everyone’s stories about their beloved pets. We would like to say a big thanks to Asda at Balby store for nominating us for their green token charity event. We are always very grateful when a cheque drops through the door. So thank you. Another great support to us are Pets at Home in Doncaster we are allowed to do bucket collections regularly at this store and they are very generous in their support to us, so again thank you. We have a large selection of small, medium and large dogs all shapes and sizes so if you are considering adopting a dog please come and chat to us. We will need to come and carry out a home check before you take your chosen dog home, just to make sure that you have chosen the right dog and you have a high enough fence just in case you have chosen an escape artist ! Our cattery also has some wonderful cats and kittens, and again if you would like to adopt a cat please come to see us and

Finding a forever home have a chat to Penny who is our cat manager. She will be able to tell you about all her cat personalities.

Bullet, 2 year ol d lurcher

He is loving, aff ectionate and very play ful. He ha s the funniest character and makes ev er yone laugh

If you have any time to spare you could do so much to help us by volunteering to join us on street collections, also dog walking, gardening around the Sanctuary and much more. Please call 01302 711330 and find out more. Could I thank people that keep leaving items in my garage for the Sanctuary, no-one ever leaves a name but drop off washing powder, washing up liquid, black bags, dog food, cat food, beds and lots more. It is always a lovely surprise, and very generous of people to think of us. We have a lovely corner of our new Reception dedicated to a shop area, there is everything that you would need to take care of your dog or cat, including leads, toys and bedding, scratching poles etc. Also lots of lovely gifts, so take a look while you are there I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Please remember dogs die in a summer in hot cars, even with the windows open. Also remember if you are jogging or running in hot weather dogs are not equipped to deal with this, so please leave your dog at home. It is also illegal to ‘walk’ your dog whilst cycling which I see often. Not only is it dangerous but does anyone really believe their beloved dog really enjoys this?

Bruno

and Roxy have been at May flower for 6 months now bu been together for 8 years now. t have little one) says Roxy (the ‘You just can’t separate us as we are sole mates and do ever together. So if you adopt me, ything my mate comes too as a foster dog’

Please give a bl ac to choose from k cat a chance! Several .

On that serious note I will say bye for now and I hope everyone has a wonderful summer.

The Parish Room September seems, to me, to be an exciting start to a lot of things. We will soon be thinking about Christmas parties and celebrations and where better to hold them than Tickhill Parish Room. It is small enough for a smaller more intimate party (and much better than having it at home), and big enough for a larger party.

Janice Birkinshaw Do you enjoy a cuppa?

Our kitchen is very well equipped with a large rangetype cooker, fridge, microwave and dishwasher. We have enough crockery, cutlery and wine glasses to serve a dinner for more than 45, so dinner parties are no problem. We have just the right sort of individual teapots, milk jugs and sugar bowls to cater for an Afternoon Tea occasion, complete with beautiful white damask table cloths.

Do you like meeting with friends for a chat, whilst lingering over a morning coffee?

The atmosphere in the main hall is perfect for a Christening or a children’s party. We have a projector you can link into with your laptop/computer for slide shows and business presentations, as well as free wifi, if required, for your business meetings or training sessions or any other booking!

The prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing and you are free to stay the whole morning if you so wish.

In September we have several ‘events’ coming up in the diary:

Every Saturday morning, between 10am and 12 noon, the Friends of St. Mary’s Group, hold a coffee morning in Tickhill Parish Room to enable people meet up with friends or even meet new ones.

To encourage you to sample these coffee mornings we are offering a free cup of tea or coffee during the month of September with the presentation of the voucher on this page.

Join the rainbow eruption of joy and dance coming to Doncaster in September Doncaster town centre is set to be awash with colour as the town’s theatre team up with international street theatre makers Artonik for The Colour of Time – a free outdoor performance that brings a rainbow eruption of powder and dance to the streets of Doncaster on Saturday 19 September. France’s Artonik have performed all over the world and their latest production The Colour Of Time has clocked up thousands of miles before making its way to Doncaster. And there’s a chance for you to be involved. Cast is inviting anyone aged over 9 with an interest in theatre, dance or performance to join the professional performers in this massive processional dance from the centre of town to Sir Nigel Gresley Square. Participants are invited to learn a dance routine to help bring the show alive. There are videos to help people learn the choreography, and it doesn’t require any previous experience. The Colour Of Time is a stunning reinvention of the Indian Holi Festival where, each year, people throw gulal powder in the air showing great joy, celebrating unity, and acceptance of diversity through colourful embraces. In a huge dance parade, dancers and musicians will move in a choreographed parade through Doncaster town centre towards a finale on

the Sir Nigel Gresley Square outside Cast. Graham Whitehead, Head of marketing and communications at Cast comments:

“This is a great way for people from our local communities of any ability, who love to dance or express themselves in performance, to be part of a joyful and dynamic celebration. We’re delighted to bring outdoor theatre specialists Artonik and the spectacle that has been the highlight of festivals around the world since 2013 to paint Doncaster’s skies”. If dance isn’t your thing. There are also opportunities for community volunteers aged over 16 to work with Cast’s professional team of ushers to make this event something that Doncaster will never forget. Anyone interested in taking part as a performer or volunteer can contact Cast on 01302 303 959 or visit castindoncaster.com. T

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Autumn Equinox September 23rd is a special date in the gardening calendar. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length. Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit. This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year. Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be

planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on the patio. Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leafraking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season. The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016.

Autumn Lawn Care Sweep the leaves. I put mine in a perforated dustbin liner, in a dry spot and wait for them to rot down. Rake Use a wire rake to pull out all the dead moss and thatch. I put everything I collect into the compost bin. Spike lawn Push a garden fork right through the lawn into the earth below then rock it a little to open up the lawn’s surface and allow air in. Brush with top dressing This is available from garden centres. Brush it into the holes with a stiff broom. To make your own top dressing, mix 3 parts top soil with one part peat substitute and 6 parts sharp sand.

Methodist Minister

iAdios! Mr Tickhill.

Dear Friends, The past few weeks have been very difficult for some families in Tickhill in terms of bereavements. One of such is the family of the late Ray Hill (a.k.a. Mr. Tickhill). As a Minister for the Methodists in Tickhill, I am very appreciative of the wonderful privilege given to me to be part of celebrating Ray’s life. Though I’ve been serving in Tickhill for the past 12 months, I feel that I have not known Ray enough to be capable to talk about a man who dedicated his life for Tickhill. I have therefore requested a member of the Methodist Church and a good friend of the family, Len Rees, to present a summary of his tribute to Mr. Tickhill. Len writes: “The passing of Ray Hill has left an irreplaceable gap in the life of this community and indeed in the life of the Methodist Church family. Ray was a man who demonstrated selfless service and commitment to his work as a local councillor and to the various organisations to which he belonged and prominent amongst these was his support of the Methodist Church in Tickhill. He was also an active member of the Horticultural Society and his contribution here as with all the other organisations he supported was incalculable. Wherever he went he brought with him an ability to touch the hearts of so many people, and in this capacity, he was such a special person. Courtesy was an integral part of Ray’s unique personality and he was for the Christian community of Tickhill very much a role model as to how the Christian life should be lived. For those seeking the meaning of Christ’s challenge to “Follow me”, Ray’s response was exemplary, and those seeking to understand the true meaning of life, need to have looked no further

Gillian Hill and family are hosting a MacMillan Coffee Morning on Saturday 26th September from 10am-1pm in Methodist Church Lounge, Tickhill in memory of Ray Hill. £2 for coffee and cake, tickets available from Gillian (01302 743317) or Becky (07979 151099) T than to the manner in which Ray lived it. His life was essentially one of contentment and humility, that elusive state of being which eludes so many, and hence he was able to relate to those with whom he came into contact, and always offer the helping hand. One hymn, above all others, would seem to encapsulate Ray’s approach to all that he did, and one verse in particular: “Fill thou my life, O lord my God, In every part with praise That my whole being may proclaim, Thy being and Thy ways.” We recall a life filled with love for dear Gillian his wife, his family, his church, and for the wider community of Tickhill, which he sought always to serve to the best of his ability. We have all been greatly blessed by his presence in our lives and by his example, for he now enjoys the peaceful presence of his Saviour. How could it be otherwise?” It is my prayer that Ray will rest in the perfect peace of God and that his wonderful example will encourage us to live to make Tickhill a better place to live and be. May God bless you all. Yours sincerely,

Shoe Box Appeal As we are nearing autumn, our thoughts will soon be turning towards Christmas and the time is getting near to when we will be thinking about collecting shoe boxes to fill and send to children who have nothing. The Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child sends shoe boxes filled with toys, books and pens to children who have nothing - their faces are full of delight and happiness as they open their box as this is probably all the children will receive at Christmas. If you would like to fill a shoe box, leaflets giving information and guidance on what to put in the boxes will be available in the Library in September. Notebooks, pens and pencils are particularly useful as the older children cannot go school unless they can provide their own paper and pens and they are desperate to go to school. A donation of £3 per shoe box is much appreciated and helps with the cost of transportation. On Wednesday, 7th October there will be a coffee morning in the Methodist Church lounge from 10 a.m. to 12 noon where suitable items to fill the shoe boxes will be on sale, everyone is welcome to come along. Ideally, the shoe boxes need to be filled by Sunday, 1st November when you can bring your shoe box to a Service in the Methodist Church at 10.30 a.m. when the boxes will be blessed before they are sent off to bring joy to children who have nothing. Alternatively, if this is not convenient, I can arrange to pick up your box. Last year 5,519 boxes were sent from the Doncaster area, with 192 being sent from Tickhill, Bawtry and Harworth. If you would like any more information or a leaflet dropping off please give me a call - if you could fill a shoe box or even get a group of friends together to do one or two between you, it would be very much appreciated. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Hoping you will be able to help to bring a little happiness into a child’s life. Thank You.

We know it is frustrating when someone who arrives, in the waiting room, after you, is called before you. However, all patients are seen in the order they are booked for and other patients may be booked for a different health professional.

How to reduce your risk of catching infections Medical Research by Professor Little of The University of Southampton and written in The Lancet, has shown that thorough hand washing at least 10 times a day can significantly cut our risk of catching infections. (20% lower risk of catching flu’ and a 14% reduction in the general risk of infection) Thorough handwashing means covering the whole hand in soap and water (or hand gel if water is not available) and ensuring all parts are washed. A demonstration is available online. Add in training ourselves not to touch our faces and the benefits increase. Simple and cost effective. If you use the internet search for PRIMIT and find out more.

Local History Society

On Saturday July 25th, in conjunction with Doncaster Libraries, we again held a Local History Fair at Tickhill Library. The theme was “Doncaster 1914/1918 at Home and at War” and judging by the attendance it is a subject that people still find fascinating 100 years on – perhaps because now it can be viewed without experiencing the actual horrors of the conflict. Thanks to Lesley Nicholson who organised the exhibition and her supporters Charles Kelham and Helen Wallder of Doncaster Archives and Local Studies Library who provided interesting archive material.

On Thursday September 17th our 2015/16 Season opens with a brief AGM followed by a talk on the Tinsley Rolls (which had nothing to do with steelmaking and considerably predated the Tinsley rolling mills). Following the talk there will be a free buffet supper which your scribe has been told will form an adequate evening meal, so please don’t eat too much tea before you come to the meeting. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom in Northgate starting at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) but unusually this will be a MEMBERS ONLY EVENT. We will continue to welcome visitors at our ordinary meetings from October onwards.

Tickhill and District Lions Club Following the sad death of Tickhill mayor Councillor Ray Hill we have made donations to both of the charities nominated at his funeral, Tickhill in Bloom and Methodist Church and Charities. We have also donated £250 to the Rossington Children’s Centre to cover the cost of a coach trip to Cleethorpes on 19th August. On the barbecue front we assisted Tickhill Cricket Club on 12th July for the 6 a side tournament in the morning and then for the match between Tickhill and the South Yorkshire League Select X1 in the afternoon. This was to mark the grand opening of the new pavilion by Geoff York, the oldest surviving member of the club at 95. An enjoyable day in front of a good crowd who can now make use of some excellent facilities. The barbecue team will be in action again on 26th September for the TFest day of music when there will be stages at the Scarbrough Arms and the Cricket Club. Note for your diaries. Another function at the Cricket Club - on Saturday 7th November there will be a big bonfire, super firework show, an excellent barbecue and the usual range of quality drinks. Details of timings for the bonfire and the fireworks will be advertised closer to the date.

Sing along for our Queen This month sees Elizabeth II become the longest reigning monarch in our country’s history. To celebrate this we are planning a concert for Saturday 19th September commencing at 6.30pm in church. There will be lots of popular songs from the decades for all to join in, children of our schools will be adding to the programme (a good hour long) and a group of our community has been working hard to pop in some harmony. There’s no charge (a retiring collection for those who wish to donate) and light refreshments will be served. We hope it will be a really good opportunity to come together. As part of this celebration, Tickhill Together are organising flags of the Commonwealth to be flying. Look out for the information on each of the countries in the window below – Rosemary Chappell has very kindly done all the research for us to enjoy. The landmark date falls on Thursday 10th. On Saturday 12th in Castle Close Community Centre, T.A.R.A. are organising free tea and cakes to celebrate. Lots going on in September – let’s make the most of it. T

Tickhill & District W.I. The speaker for our next meeting on 2nd September will be Pat Osborne giving us an insight into the life of Churchill’s mother. All our meetings are in the Parish Room at 2pm and always on the first Wednesday of each month. Visitors will be most welcome.

Tickhill Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2015

The Audit for the Council’s Finances is now complete and 2014/15 has been finalised. As a legal requirement the Council must advertise the accounts and the certificate, and both are displayed on the Tickhill Town Council Notice board and on the Website, alongside the financial statement. The Financial position has been consolidated over the past 12months and hopefully with prudence and careful spending Tickhill Town Council finances will remain in a healthy position. Each month the accounts for payments are prepared and distributed to all Councillors and an up to date statement of receipts and payments for the financial year to date are also submitted. Payments due that month are provided and set out against budget. The finances are monitored both monthly and quarterly. At year end the Internal Auditor scrutinises all transactions and bank information and it is then sent to Government Approved External Auditors. As you are all aware it is the intention of the Council to bring the Pavilion up to a more usable standard by gradually improving the amenities. The Council is now in a position to provide a new water main to the pavilion, with a bigger capacity. Hopefully

this will improve conditions for the participants at the Gala Day, Scruff y Dog Show, The Tickhill Grand Prix and the ongoing use of the showers for the footballers etc. It is hoped that new crockery and cutlery can soon be provided also improvements to the changing room facilities. The fruits of the hard work are now beginning to ripen and hopefully the Pavilion facilities and Tickhill Town area are showing signs of improvements. The Council has included in this edition of Tickhill Today a full break down of their financial position. The Neighbourhood Plan referendum took place on 23rd July 2015 with a “YES” result. There was a 26.59% turn out with an 87% in favour. Well done Tickhill. It has also been agreed by the council for the clerk to work to office hours. These will be displayed on the Website, on the notice boards and here in Tickhill Today. They are Mon-Wed 8.00am -1.00pm & Friday 2.00pm - 5.00pm

Medieval church gets an upgrade St John the Baptist Church is a wonderful Grade 1 listed building in the lovely village of Wadworth. There has been a church building in Wadworth for a very long time. The style of some of the columns were not used after 1180, so we know there was a church built by 1180 on the current site. Over the centuries the church has had many extensions and modifications, often as a result of new laws, inventions or theological thinking. The church building is a visual feast and has a prayerful feel inside; it forms a centre in the village around which life happens. This summer the church building received a 21st century upgrade, adding a toilet, a new south path with disabled access, new heating system, a loop system for those with hearing impairment, improved kitchen, more accessible font, better disabled access around the inside of church. We’ve also done some repairs to the building itself and regilded the clock. Many of the changes will make the church more accessible to families which we positively encourage. We are thankful indeed for the generosity of everyone that has gathered the funds necessary for these works to take place. There has been the tireless efforts of those organising and running the fund raising events at church which the whole community has supported over the years. There have been some large donations from individuals and then there was last summer’s fund raising around the village. A £38,100 grant from WREN has provided just over a third of the funding for the project. We are having a celebration weekend with a Garden Party on Saturday 12th September which will be in the churchyard and village hall at Wadworth. The Garden Party stalls include Cakes, Bric-a-Brac, Books, BottleTombola, Games, Raffle, Splat-the-Rat, Lucky Dip, Tombola, colouring competition and a Messy church gazebo. There will also be tours of church this year so people can see what has been done. Refreshments including Cream Teas will be served in Wadworth Village Hall. Then on Sunday 13th September 10:30am there will be a service of thanks and rededication with Bishop Peter of Doncaster followed by a bring and share lunch. We are inviting children to come dressed as characters from history, such as a King, a Queen, a knight, a soldier, a farmer, blacksmith. All in all a magnificent effort. Hope to see you come and celebrate with us. T 74

Tickhill Open Garden Exceeds All Expectations Stuart and Anne Grindle opened their garden on the 8th of August. The weather was excellent and the response from the public was incredible. People came from as far away as Dover, Newcastle, Manchester and Scarborough and all the surrounding areas all due to the appearance of the garden shown on Gardeners World – promoted by Monty Don. As ever our local support was incredible. Local businesses provided top class prizes for the tombola Friends, families and the WI provided excellent delicious cakes Richard and Judy of Eastfield farm provided car park services, without this facility we could not function We would also like to thank the volunteers who made the day possible and a great success. Thank you all again for your loyal supporting helping us to achieve a grand total of £3,303.32 Proceeds split between : St Marys Parish Church, Tickhill The Isabella Reynolds fund Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice Many, many thanks Looking forward to seeing you all next year!
