Charles Dickens Officially Spring is here and looking around it would seem that nature agrees. At the time of writing it is wet and windy, but my garden is filled with the promise of the spring to come with daffodils in bloom (in fact they are past their best) and the buds of new growth everywhere. The delivery window for this magazine includes both Mother’s Day and the start of British Summer Time, lighter nights and longer days are on the way. Springtime often starts people thinking about their homes, whether it is for a traditional spring clean or more drastic changes. If you are planning home or garden improvements this Spring and Summer you will find a huge range of people to help you within the pages of this magazine. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give them a call. The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th April. No doubt the May magazines will bring the start of Spring and Summer fairs and summertime events, don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you are planning an event this year.

Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium Diggles Lodge Lane, Ranby, Retford DN22 8QJ

You’ve potentially made the difficult decision as to whether or not you will be buried or cremated – if it’s a cremation, what should you or your family now be looking at in terms of ensuring that you select the right crematorium? If you want an experience that your loved ones will remember for all the right reasons, then you should be looking towards the new Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium. WHY? Who better to look after you than a facility that is family owned, with our directors having over 90 years collective experience in the funeral sector — as a result we’re totally committed to providing exceptional standards of service to the bereaved families that use our facilities. Our mission statement is about doing just that - clearly others think we do too, as in 2017 Memoria’s South Oxfordshire Crematorium & Memorial Park was named as ‘Best Crematorium in the UK’ at the Good Funeral Awards with our other seven sites all featuring in the top ten!

In early February, Memoria opened its newest crematorium at Barnby Moor, serving directly the communities of Doncaster, Bawtry and surrounding areas. So, what can you expect? Unlike most crematoria who offer just 40 minute or even half an hour services, as a market leader we provide as a basic service element, a full one-hour service time. This is so families are not then caught-up in a constant conveyor belt type scenario whereby they see other mourners either departing as they arrive or when they depart themselves the next funeral cortege is already in view — this in our opinion isn’t conducive to a positive experience. These 60 minutes guarantee time for the bereaved to adequately celebrate and remember their loved one, peruse floral tributes and chat with friends at their leisure without the added pressure of feeling they have to vacate the site once the service or ceremony is over.

THE AMBIANCE OF THE SITE IS FURTHER COMPLIMENTED BY: • A Service Chapel with a capacity for over 100 seats • Dedicated clergy facilities • Extensive Memorial gardens for cremated remains • Well laid out car parking with safe access • Disabled access and hearing loop • Comfortable soft furnishings with a neutral soft colour scheme. • Choice of advanced music system or live organ • Web camera with live streaming capabilities for those friends and family who may be unable to attend • Plasma television screens for photo dedication/eulogy’s • All set in a beautiful tranquil countryside environment with stunning water features & extensive gardens. • Wesley Music system with an almost infinite music library to cater for all requests. • Uniquely for the area our grounds also include a dedicated section for traditional burials. Please ask your local Funeral Director for further information or if you are able please drop in for a chat, our staff will be only too pleased to show you the facilities we have on-site.

STEP INTO SPRING!

T

Spring is the season of new beginnings. From warmer weather and longer days to flowers blooming and the budding of leaves, there is no better time to have a fresh start and a good old de-clutter. Here at the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, our charity shops are a vital source of income and awareness for our Centre and our animal welfare work. Every purchase and donation made at one of our five shops helps us to continue our rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming work. The shops rely on kind donations from the public to keep shop floors full of bargain finds and little treasures, so why not declutter and donate this spring? Our charity shops are at The Courtyard, Bawtry; High Street, Rotherham, Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington; Field Street, Thorne and on eBay. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We are always grateful of donations ranging from clothing to small furniture and everything in between. These can be dropped off at any of our five locations, or collected by our volunteer drivers by calling 01302 719790. There are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We also provide dog training, off lead facilities, a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.

BAWTRY GARDEN CLUB T Our Group were treated to a most fascinating talk in March, by Penny Forsyth, a Bee Keeper from Tresswell, North Notts. Penny has hives in Tresswell Woods, and explained the life cycle of the honey bee, giving us some amazing facts. She also spoke about wildlife conservation, and reminded us all about the role we can play in our gardens to help protect our bees etc. Penny also had various varieties of her honey for sale. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd April, 7.00pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Bawtry. Our speaker is Dave Newman talking about 'Small Scale Vegetable Production'. Our May meeting on Tuesday 7th May is about Old Tools (Woodcraft). DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Wonderful news!!

We have reached our target to buy the CT scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has donated towards this appeal, to those who fundraised on our behalf and to the organisations who helped us - we couldn't have done it without you all. Our thanks also to our lovely volunteers who always answer our requests for help. Initial work started on the new CT suite at DRI in February which will house two CT scanners and should be operational by early 2020. We will keep you updated. Our new fundraising appeal is for prostate cancer. The NHS states that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year. We plan to raise £150,000 to buy a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. This machine is critical in effectively diagnosing prostate cancer in men and also plays a crucial role in planning the most appropriate treatment plan for the patient. If you have any fundraising ideas to help buy this desperately needed equipment please do get in touch with us. Don't forget our Mile of Coins will be in

10

T

Frenchgate from Monday 1st April to Saturday 6th April, 10am-3pm each day. All donations will go towards our prostate cancer campaign. Bring along your change (notes welcome too!) - we look forward to seeing you. Also a reminder to register for our Midsummer Walk which is on Sunday, 19th May. Please contact Christine Whiteley on 01302 536472 or by Email: musicline02@yahoo.co.uk. Christine is a member of Thorne Rural Lions who are working in partnership with us for this event. Price is £6 per person and is free for disabled and children under 12. Please also see our website for more information. We're working together to help fight cancer. LIFESTYLE

Looking back to step forward

Think about the beliefs you hold strongest about yourself, are they actually accurate?

and not yours that you hear.

Often when coaching people I hear sentences such as “someone like me couldn’t do this/that” or other self-limiting beliefs.

You failed to build a business = I can never build a business. Opinion or fact?

They never even began to fulfil their full potential simply because they never saw the point in even starting, after all, they were bound to fail. Commonly it’s a specific event, conversation or experience that lead them to this opinion that they now hold as a fact forever. They were told by someone they trusted they weren’t smart enough, pretty enough or perhaps they themselves attempted a goal and fell short. This negative experience is then taken as an immovable fact. Interestingly, if the negative experience did involve another person, listen to your thoughts, often you may notice it’s their voice

12

Most of the time, it isn’t about what happened to us, it’s how we view what happened to us and what we feel that says about us that counts.

You failed to get in great shape = It’s impossible for me to ever be fit and healthy. Opinion or fact? People will laugh if I try and fail = I can never make another attempt. Opinion or fact? Every outcome in your life will be a result of the actions you take, change your actions to change your results. Of course, it’s not easy. Sometimes we may need to seek help in putting the past events behind us, I’m not in your shoes. But we all have a story to tell, it’d be such a shame if yours was less than it could be at the end of it all simply because you allowed someone or something to dissuade you. Even accepting that you are in the

driving seat and you can create new results in whatever area of your life you choose is very powerful…hope! The World is jam packed full of rags to riches, failure to success and the impossible becoming possible. Why not you? Why not now? Every one of them started as an “ordinary” person. They simply focused on controlling the now, altering their self-perception and letting the results flow. I hope you find some time to reflect on what’s holding you back from what you truly want, you may find a simple answer that you can then do something about. Go create a day and life that counts, always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!

Another month has gone by and the racing season has well and truly started for Bircotes Swimming club. At the start of the month, we took a few teams to the County Relay races, where the best swimming clubs from the whole of the Nottinghamshire area compete against each other. This is a team event rather than individual races, and it was great to see how our swimmers worked well together and were totally inclusive of all swimmers, young and old. All children had a fantastic day. As our club is quite small, a lot of our swimmers had to compete in races for swimmers 2 or 3 years older than their actual age. Despite that, they made us very proud. We didn’t come home with any medals this year but have shown we are worthy of a place in the competition. Only 2 weeks after the County relays we took part in the Doncaster Dartes gala at Adwick. It was the first time in the history of our club that we paid a visit to our neighbouring town. We were made to feel very welcome and it was a great meet. A total of 17 of our swimmers took part in this competition and the results were amazing. Lots of personal bests and speeding tickets were achieved, which is great this early on in the racing year, one of our swimmers, Elin finished 4th out of 25 in her age category, another, Abi finished 5th out of 33 in her age group and William finished 8th out of

21 in his. Our swimmers are well and truly placing Bircotes Swimming Club on the swimming map. By the time this goes to print we will have held our 3rd Club Championships, which is closely followed by a swimming gala at Mansfield, so no time to rest here! Early in May our swimmers will be able to celebrate their fabulous achievements at our annual presentation night, which is always a great night with plenty of food, music and laughter. We can’t wait for that one! At the annual presentation night, there is a raffle which raises money for the club. We have some very special prizes lined up already, but if any local companies would be willing to sponsor a prize, please contact Mieke on bircotesswimclubchairperson@gmail.com We would be very grateful. Many thanks. T

Ooh, I’ve been in a constant eding to keep my species safe, I’ve been in high demand elsewhere. Who knew rising up to challenge the dirty frackers could also be rewarding and fun? Facts first - the endless procession of monster wagons continues at Misson Springs site. Some held together with gaffer tape, shocking. And where is all that water coming from in the tanks? And where is all the mud being taken and dumped? Drilling is deep into the ground, around 3000m now, where nasty things like radon lurk. Surely this ‘dangerous’ mud in open wagons is not driving past your homes? Past your schools? Heaven forbid. But I’m thrilled so many people are coming to Wildlife Wednesdays at the gate DN10 6ET. Great fun and lots of cake. There are speakers, too. My guardians Notts Wildlife Trust are great support. Such knowledge, Such energy. Tour my habitat on film on their website: www. nottinghamshirewildlife.org Cities are not my thing, as you can imagine. However, standing in Parliament Square looking at the Houses of Parliament was a top moment. Amazing speakers, too! MPs, barristers and friends from Misson and nearby towns. They all agree with me. Fracking is wrong in every way. So time to act and finish it off: Come to the gate, there’s a rota to monitor the traffic. Help is needed. Follow Frack Free Misson on Facebook and Twitter. Come to meetings, each Thursday, 7.30, The Angel Inn, Misson Sign the petition: https://actionnetwork.org/ petitions/tell-michael-gove-to-protect-missoncarr-sssi-from-fracking. Twit- Twoo for now,

PASTOR’S PAGE Long walks, anything dogrelated, reading, art galleries, computer games, gardening, model-making, travel, and even, on occasion, shopping. These are some of the things I enjoy doing when off work. The problem I have is deciding which one to do on any particular day/ week; I sort of freeze, unable to make a choice. I know that if I, say, sit in a coffee shop with a book for an enjoyable hour, then I haven’t spent that hour walking the dog. A three-day trip to an unknown part of the country means 3 days when I haven’t worked on my latest model. Of course, the problem with all this indecision means I end up spending time doing nothing at all, which then makes me all the more frustrated. The best thing to do is probably to make a definite decision for the day/ week and then throw myself into it, refusing to spend any time worrying about what else I could have chosen to do. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? But it isn’t. My wife says my problem is I have too many hobbies; if I were completely absorbed by just one interest then my dilemma would disappear; but surely that would make me somewhat anti-social? I recently caught a few minutes of a tv programme about making model railways and one of the men involved was getting really quite huffy with the presenter referring to the hobby as “toy trains”. The problem seemed to be that the modeller had become somewhat obsessed; whereas I don’t want to be like that.

around, then they’ll sit on it, unwilling to come down on one side or the other. I imagine that sitting on fences for long would prove quite painful. In my experience, the most interesting people are those who have definite opinions and they are the ones who enjoy the cut and thrust of a conversation; whereas those who don’t hold any view dear are resistant to talking about the subject at all. In the Bible, Jesus made a similar comment; He said that He longed for people to be either hot or cold in their attitude towards Him, as a lukewarm attitude made Him want to, err, vomit. Strong words. My perfect week might be to take my dog to a cottage in the country, spending the mornings walking the dog in the hills while listening to an audiobook. After stopping at a pub for lunch and wandering around an art gallery in the afternoons, I could sit in the garden to watch the sun go down before playing my latest computer game until bed time. If it rains, then I could work away on my model Lancaster Bomber. If you’re getting sore sitting on the faith fence, then why not go along to a friendly church where the life and teaching of Jesus is taken seriously and where genuine questions are answered honestly and respectfully.

Unexpected things do happen; it’s how you deal with them that is important. So when we discovered at the last minute that our speaker for our February meeting was unable to be with us - were we fazed? No, not at all! Our resilience and resourcefulness kicked in and we all enjoyed an excellent evening, benefiting from the opportunity to catch up socially and take time to discuss future plans and projects. As always our peerless refreshment team maintained a steady flow of tea, coffee and wine and two of our members had provided delicious cakes, sandwiches and homemade pizza. To round the evening off, a quiz session provided further stimulation and encouraged us to rack our brains for the crucial bit of knowledge that would give our team that vital advantage. Spring will definitely be in the air for our next meeting on 27th March; it’s our Annual Meeting which gives us chance to reflect on the previous year and put the committee in place to organise us for the year ahead. That part of the meeting won’t take long, and we will enjoy a recipe swap and pot luck supper, along with a Beetle Drive. We will also be welcoming Anita Love with her selection of Flamingo stationery.

DO JOIN US You will be more than welcome to drop in as a guest and see if it suits you. Just turn up at the Community Centre in Misson at 7.30 pm on the last Wednesday of the month, or phone our secretary Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578 beforehand. Watch this space for details of our forthcoming programme.

Tickhill & District Lions Like to get involved with Lions? We need male & female members!

The residents of Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth, Loversall, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth are very generous when we ask for donations to help support good causes but have you ever thought about joining the Lions? What’s stopping you?

Who we are:

We are a group of 29 men and women from a wide range of backgrounds with a spread of ages from 30s to retirees, who want to increase our numbers across the entire district.

How we operate:

We are separated into two sections, Welfare Committee “those who spend money,” meet fortnightly (in a private room in a pub) to discuss and where necessary decide how to investigate requests for help. If we decide to help we will then put our proposal to the entire club the following week when we meet for the Business Meeting at Tickhill Cricket Club. All members then vote on these proposals. Activities Committee “those who raise money,” meet fortnightly (in a different pub to the Welfare Committee) to discuss fund raising activities, these would include annual events such as the Santa Float and Firework Extravaganza, but there

are many other events and organisations that we support throughout the year with activities such as Race Nights, Casino Nights and disabled sports days and outings. All events are then discussed and agreed at the Business Meeting the following week.

What to do next:

Contact any Lion to arrange an informal meeting with two of our Membership Committee to see if we like you and most of all you like us. You would then be invited to attend three meetings, a Welfare Committee Meeting, an Activities Meeting and a Business Meeting. It would then be time for you and us to decide whether to proceed. It’s as simple as that.

Being a member:

It is hoped that all members will attend every week, but we are realistic and understand that every member freely gives of their time whenever they can, not just to attend our meetings but also to help at the events arranged by the Activities Committee. So, yes, joining the Lions is a commitment but we are a social group who enjoy each other’s company whilst helping others.

PS. And have fun doing it!

For more information see our advert in this issue Each Lion and every club is changing lives in ways both great and small. Service is a personal commitment that impacts the people serving and the people we serve. If you would like to get involved or if you think we may be able to help you or a community project please get in touch.

Monty Male 8 Years Feb 2019 Possibly No Older

Monty’s owner moved and cruelly left him behind to fend for himself on the streets. Luckily a neighbour recognised him scavenging for a meal in the bins and took him in. She has been taking care of him for a while now but unfortunately has to move and isn’t able to take him with her. Not wanting to leave him behind to a uncertain future, she contacted Mayflower for help. So here he is looking for a new home. Monty is an independent little chap who is very fussy but likes it to be on his own terms. He is happy to come to you for fusses but doesn’t like to be picked up or cuddled. As a former stray he has obviously been outside so would probably be happiest with a secure garden to explore away from busy roads for his safety. We are unsure how he will react to dogs but he certainly wont appreciate living with another cat I’m afraid. Don’t pass him by, call him and I’m sure he will come running out to greet you.

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

HMP Lindholme is close to Hatfield Woodhouse and Doncaster, a Category C training prison, with around 1,000 prisoners. We perform vital roles for Ministers and the public providing an unbiased oversight of the prison. Members are unpaid but claim costs for travel and financial loss. Duties include; monitoring fairness and humanity, the range and adequacy of programmes, taking prisoner applications, raising concerns with the Governor and reporting annually to the Minister. Applicants must be over 18 with a mature outlook on life and live within 30 miles of the prison. We welcome all who are interested and strive to achieve a balanced Board. Applicants must possess the interest and time, about 5 days a month, to make a full contribution, which can include callouts to the prison (at any time) for incidents, so full training is given. Members are open minded, committed to diversity equality and human rights, able to challenge, with the ability to maintain confidentiality, we are good team players and have the willingness to take responsibility. If you’re interested, application packs and details are available from; www.justice.gov.uk/jobs/independent-monitoring-board or, telephone 020 333 432 65, with your details and an application will be sent to you. A tour is arranged, it is then for you to make a decision as to whether you wish to continue the application. Completed applications must be emailed to; IMBrecruitment@justice.gsi.gov.uk or to, IMB Secretariat, Post Point 2, Third Floor, 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, London, E14 4PH, by the closing date, 28/April/2019 quoting the campaign reference 930/Lindholme/2019 on all forms.

Our second meeting of the year had us in a snowy Japan looking at some amazing photographs of birds. Our speaker, Geoff Trinder a wildlife photographer, and his wife Chris had been on a trip to Japan to see the Cranes amongst other birds. Before Travelling to the Islands, they visited Tokyo – one of the largest cities in the world with incredible transport infrastructure, which still has its eye on the tourist industry by providing rickshaws for sightseeing. We were told about the interesting hotel rooms with sleeping platforms, the perils of having the light switch at the bottom of the ladder to the bed and the toilet with remote controls which sounded quite unnerving to me!

The photos of the birds were astounding at times. Geoff must have been quite close to take pictures of the cranes- the very tall birds who mate for life and reinforce their bond by noisy jumping rituals during the winter. They were lucky enough to see Sea Eagles, again very large birds with a wingspan of two to three metres in an area where the fishermen have developed a very successful winter industry of taking photographers out onto the ice to supplement their summer fishing income.

Misson Community Association IT’S ALL HAPPENING IN MISSON… In 2018 The Pinfold was purchased and donated to the Parish and Misson Parish Council have since organised and funded the clean up which was done by the Parish Lengthsmen and eager volunteers who filled several large skips with rubbish, rubble, rocks and anything else you can think of…including *fly tipped items. After the major clean up (work still ongoing), Hanson Quarries provided a new gate for the Pinfold, which gives that finishing touch to a lovely cleaned up historical area. Also, Mount Pleasant Hotel donated several tree saplings which will enhance the area for years to come. Many thanks to everyone involved as this was an enormous task. *If you see any fly tipping anywhere in the area, please report it to Bassetlaw District Council on 01909-533533 also www.fixmystreet.com - it only takes a minute to make a telephone call and it can be anonymous. That’s not all - also last year the church yard needed new gates and a drastic clear out of tough old clinging ivy that must have been miles long, and also general ‘garden waste’ was removed along with clearing ivy and rubbish off the gravestones, thus they now look very tidy indeed as does the church yard. Again, work is ongoing but many thanks to hardworking Parish Lengthsmen who did a stirling job, and to the Parish Council funding this major restoration programme for the church yard and the cemetery.

Thanks must also go to Councillor Julie Watkins for all the Heritage work (including all above) she does behind the scenes for the benefit of the village, and recommends the following web site: www. bassetlawmuseum.org. uk (Grove Street, Retford) interesting village photographs on the site include a lovely one of a handsome Cecil Law on horseback in his Sherwood Rangers uniform in 1914, who was from Misson. TUNNEL TECH

NORTH, NEWINGTON

- REMINDER

The odours from Tunnel Tech are still a nuisance to Misson residents and surrounding areas, but please keep complaining to environmental. health@bassetlaw.gov.uk also andrea.stewart@bassetlaw. gov.uk and telephone 01909533164. It may be worthwhile for each person in a household to complain of odours separately, so that they are not logged as one per household. In recent months complaints have been vigorous to say the least, but Andrea Stewart came to see me and other residents to explain that Bassetlaw District Council are not ignoring the problem, but that they are continuing to keep a check on emissions from the factory and adherence to permits and timescales.

ANYONE FOR CROQUET ? T

When English Heritage took over Brodsworth Hall, more than twenty years ago, the Croquet Association asked whether they could set up a Croquet Club to play on the croquet lawns there. Sheila Lines was a Physical Education lecturer at Lady Mabel College at Wentworth Woodhouse, who had recently retired. She and Carolyn Walker, also a PE lecturer, took on the task although they knew nothing about croquet. They visited many croquet clubs and decided the Golf Croquet was an easier game for beginners, who could progress to Association Croquet if they wished. The gardens were overgrown, so the lawns had to be gradually restored to a suitable length, hoops and mallets were acquired, a rule book was written and a meeting at St Mary’s Church Hall was advertised for prospective players. A few people turned up and slowly the club grew. Since then Brodsworth Hall has been conserved and the gardens have been restored to their Victorian glory, now winning many awards. Now the club enjoys playing in the beautiful surroundings on most days when the Hall is open. The original club rules state that whites must be worn and this tradition is continued to enhance the atmosphere. Visitors enjoy the unique experience of watching the games, most people’s knowledge of croquet is from Alice in Wonderland, and so we are always willing to explain how we play. It is a game of skill and tactics, not just hitting balls through hoops. The aim is to get your ball through the hoop before your opponents, while preventing them by blocking or hitting away their balls. Hoops are played in a set order. Four balls are always used. When playing singles two players have two balls each, for doubles four players have one ball each and play in pairs. The first ball through the hoop wins that point and everyone plays on to the next hoop.

THE HUB’S NEW RESIDENT ARTIST T John Harris began painting nearly forty years ago while stationed abroad with the British Army. To fill his leisure time, he bought a set of paints and paper, and began painting local landscapes and wildlife. He continued this during his various jobs until in 1987 he became a full-time artist. In 1990 at Hallam University he met his wife, Bonita Ferguson, now an established artist, and they have been together through various interesting projects. This included being resident artists at Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire, where HRH The Prince of Wales, who attended one of their exhibitions, discussed painting techniques(!) Their range of experience in watercolour, oil and pastel painting in many different styles and subjects became noticed, and for some years they painted copies of Old Masters for private clients and insurance companies.

After starting a family life changed: Bonita became an art teacher and John travelled around the country giving painting demonstrations, talks and workshops. Now, Bonita still paints and is Head of Art at a school in Mansfield; John has a studio gallery at The Hub in Retford. Internationally, John is known for his wildlife paintings and has had exhibitions with the WWT, the RSPB and the National Trust. He also paints landscapes, and accepts commissions. Examples of all these can be seen at The Hub, so do come and talk to John if you are interested in original art. John is passionate about passing his knowledge on; if you’d like to paint with him in a class or oneto-one, just ask.

IN THE GARDEN

Open Your Garden This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens. Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too.

42

It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening.

Bawtry residents Group News T

Sadly, we must start on a sombre note, Mrs Celia Arrowsmith the New Hall Booking Clerk past away earlier this month, the thoughts of the BRG, BTC and the BRA are with her family, friends and all who knew her well. The Bawtry Residents Group can confirm that both the new Police Sargent and PC for Bawtry will be attending the next meeting of the BRG in the Crown Hotel on the 28th of March. The Bawtry neighbourhood watch network is increasing from day to day, the network is looking to the east side of Bawtry for more involvement and also from the retailers throughout our town, anyone wishing to join the network please use the email:- bedford@ btconnect.com. The network coordinator for Bawtry will be informing the next BRG meeting an update regarding activity in and around our town. The BTC Events Group is working hard and involving all groups within Bawtry to bring fun events to our town, if anyone wishes to contribute to the group the next meeting will be on the 15th of April at 6:30pm at the Crown Hotel. A note for the diary is the 22nd of June, it is the date that Bawtry for recreation for sport have chosen for the annual sport and

48

fun day, Mr S Young chair of BARS and Mrs J Dyer Facilities Manger at the MSG, informed the BTC events group meeting that this year the event is going to be larger than in previous years with more involvement events and activities for all ages. Mr Young stated that the event was hoping to raise +/- £1.5k from the event to upgrade and carry out repairs to the Wharf Street play area. The Town Strategy working group, are now moving forward with the replacement of the Market Hill frontage footpath, monies for the path replacement are in the budget for this year. Hopefully, now the placement for the new fruit and vegetable stall has been approved by the BTC, this will happen in the near future and will be a return of a great feature for all living in Bawtry. Also, as part of the town strategy working group, two members of the group have carried out a study of the Market Hill car park repairs that are required to bring it up to a high standard. It is blatantly obvious that the memorial bench that was placed in the grounds of Bawtry library was struck by a motor vehicle in the week commencing the 11th of March, anyone having information regarding this mindless act can either contact the police or the NHW coordinator. The BTC are actively looking to replace the damaged bench and the memorial plaque will be

remounted on the bench. Following the closure of the previous Polo club last year, a new club with new people and an entirely new ethos has burst into 2019. Bawtry Polo Club is run by Amy Sallabank and Victoria Jarvie who formed a friendship through polo several years ago. Amy has worked in polo yards all over the world and as a capable and ambitious player she is bringing her knowledge and skills to BPC. Victoria has ridden all her life but will be utilising her marketing background to establish a desirable and trustworthy BPC Brand, liaise with sponsors and ensure the smooth running of events. A big part of Bawtry Polo Club’s mission statement is to become part of the Bawtry Experience and providing a safe, welcoming and fun environment for everyone from families to grownups is part of that. We want as much of a ‘coffee and cake’ culture as we do a ‘Pimms and party’ scene, they say. Their plans include two Headline Events for 2019; the Visit Bawtry Cup on Sunday 14th July and a Ladies Tournament on Sunday 25th August. More details and tickets will be available soon! More information and updates can be found on their website www.BawtryPoloClub.co.uk or Facebook Page (Bawtry Polo Club) or Instagram (BawtryPoloClub).

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

Another busy month in both Bawtry and Austerfield and we hope that this update provides you with an interesting read. Many residents do contact us after reading this whether it is for assistance with their individual concerns; or something they are not happy with in their street that is affecting them and their neighbours or very often we are contacted by residents who have ideas about how they would like to see the town improved. This update concentrates on speeding in Austerfield; the airport meeting; the Health and Well Being event and the Great British Spring Clean. As always we are dealing with many different issues but space doesn’t allow us to include them all but do please contact us for more information. We hold our surgery every month and Rachael is usually at the Austerfield Parish Council meeting but these aren’t the only times we are available to meet with residents – we are available any time and if you are unable to get out we can visit you or we can meet in various locations In Bawtry and Austerfield. We were elected by the residents of the ward so please do get in touch – even if we can’t help directly we usually know who can and direct you to the right place. GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN 30 March from 10-4 at the Hope Centre, Pinders Court

officer and South Yorkshire Police. The Highways officer agreed to look at signage and road markings throughout the village; South Yorkshire police will look at doing more speed enforcement operations – not just using the van and DMBC will also look to price up 2 speed signs for either end of the village. In addition Rachael, working with residents is going to contact companies regarding the speed of their lorries coming through the village. These are only the first steps and there isn’t one solution that will reduce the speeding; instead lots of different initiatives will be tried to make a difference and reduce the speed of lorries in the village. HEALTH AND WELL BEING EVENT The event on 22 February was really attended, with over 50 ideas suggested for wellbeing initiatives and the next event is planned for 28 March but this time at New Hall as we are aware that not all residents can get to the MSG. The first thing we will be doing is to produce a directory of all activities and groups that meet in Bawtry and Austerfield so if you organise a group or activity and you didn’t come to the event, please can you get in touch so we can make sure that you are included in the directory. The plan is to produce a copy for the library but also have an on-line resource that can be accessed via Bawtry Town Council’s website.

As you will be aware we have monthly litter picks in Bawtry and Austerfield and a couple of litter picks ago, Anita who is a regular volunteer mentioned about the day of action that is organised in Misson, so this is what we are planning for Bawtry and Austerfield. So that we don’t clash with the Easter event at MSG we have brought our monthly litter pick forward a week and we are not only picking up litter but we are leaf clearing, cutting things back and generally doing anything that improves the ward. Bawtry Community Church have kindly offered the Hope Centre as the base – if you haven’t been before it is in the court yard next to Jones and Co – just near the bus stop. The plan is that anyone who wants to get involved, calls in to collect equipment and then heads off to the area that they have identified as being in need of work or we have included on our list for areas for action. You can give 30 mins of your time or come for the whole day. Tea and coffee will be available. If everyone gave an hour of their time, we could make a huge difference and tidy those areas that everyone walks past and thinks – if only it didn’t look like that! We will be registering our event on the Keep Britain Tidy website so we hopefully we will have lots of people attending.

Airport

SPEEDING IN AUSTERFIELD Last month we reported that a number of residents have raised concerns about this and the Highways officer and the police have agreed to attend a meeting which was being planned for early March and for further details please contact Rachael or look at the Austerfield Parish Council Facebook site. Also we delivered letters to residents so everyone was aware of the meeting. About 30 residents attended – either on the walk from Toll Bar corner to the Study Centre or for the meeting which was attended by DMBC’s Highways

Mick Tel: 07758089737 Email: mick.cooper@doncaster.gov.uk

The meeting was held in February and organised jointly by one of the Town Councillors and Rachael. The representatives from the airport attended and explained that following the consultation last year, they were planning to move one of the flight paths further away from all houses – this has been delayed to the autumn due to the authority that deals with the air space not being able to implement it any sooner. Also they offered restrictions on the number of training flights per day and on the days that they could take place. We also discussed the way in which the airport responds to residents who complain and the airport agreed to the changes that were suggested. Residents left the meeting pleased that some progress was being made. NEXT SURGERY Rachael will be at the next Library coffee morning on 12 April from 10am – 12pm so do pop in for a chat. Please get in touch with us if we can assist in any way. Rachael Tel: 07976896563 Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk

Kindest regards

Rachael and Mick

Austerfield Parish Council News: APRIL 2019 Welcome to the spring edition of the Austerfield Parish Council newsletter for 2019.

Tunnel Tech (Newington)

The annual Christmas lunch for the senior residents was held at The Ship Inn Newington on the 2nd of December, the event was very well attended and enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to all the staff for making our residents feel welcome and well fed. The Council are looking for volunteers to form an events committee who can discuss and organise fun events to enable the residents to get together, if you have any ideas or would like to be part of the team then please contact any member of the Council.

As you are probably already aware within Newington there is a Tunnel Tech mushroom operation that has been there for a number of years. Residents in Misson have experienced over the years problems with odours being emitted from the farm. This has resulted in Bassetlaw District Council taking legal action against Tunnel Tech, who are now in the process of taking action to enclose their operation in order to address this issue. However this may well take a substantial period of time before it is completed. If you are experiencing issues with the odours or have any concerns, please contact: environnmental.health@bassetlaw. gov.uk

Community Grants

Thank you to all those who attended the meeting on 13th March to discuss the ongoing issues with speeding, DMBC are currently are preparing costings for the suggestions made at the meeting. Once the costs have been received then a further meeting will be held to discuss how to move forward with the project.

Events

Memorial Garden The development of the memorial garden has started, so far the land has been cleared and the hedges cut back which will enable the wild flowers on site to re-establish. Once the garden has established there will be benches on site for everyone to reflect and enjoy the garden. The Parish Council would like to thank John Gillies and Mark Anderson for helping with the work.

Bawtry Carbon International The Environment Agency recently carried out an inspection of the factory, once the report is published then a copy will be available on the Parish Council website. In the meantime if you have any issues please report them by calling: 01302

SAYING GOODBYE

Dear Friends,

It is not easy to say goodbye to a job, a loved one who is passing on or has passed on or a friend / relation who is moving on. Over the past year, I had had experiences of my daughter marrying and leaving my sphere of influence and my older brother and dad passing on to eternity. By the time you may be reading this letter, I would have visited my home country, Ghana, to burry my dad and partake in his funeral. In all these experiences, the most difficult goodbye I had to say was letting my daughter go. Please, do not get me wrong – I love my brother and dad to bits. It will be their memories that I will always hold on to. Talking of memories, I wonder if I can remind you of Jesus who had to say goodbye to his friends on the eve before his death. He shared a meal with them. This is called the Passover meal. The Apostle Paul described the scene as follows: “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 26) Jesus said goodbye to his friends with a meal. This meal has

62

become a memorial to many Christians till this day. Jesus’ memorial has affected most of us to the extent that some of us want to know him and live like him. Again, the Apostle Paul puts it as follows: “But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3: 7 – 10). Knowing Christ involves saying goodbyes to some aspects of our lives as well. I wonder If you have people or experiences in your life that you are holding on to and may be a bother to your lifestyle or spirituality. It can be an abusive relationship or an addiction that is causing so much grief, but you still would not let it go. I wonder what your memorial will be when you pass on to eternity. For my dad, it was his modest lifestyle and respect for every human being – child or adult and rich or poor. That was the part of his life that made him want to be like Christ. He did that by having faith in God

and believing that the power of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter day could transform him into a better person; and it did.

We are in lent and gradually moving to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. I wonder, if I can appeal to you to use this season of repentance, forgiveness and newness as an opportunity to say goodbye to some attitudes and experiences, including some difficult relationships. Furthermore, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider making a fresh start by asking Jesus to take control of your life and help change you by the power of his resurrection. The change will be gradual so do not be frustrated if it becomes a ‘two steps forward, one step back’ change. It can take a month, months or even years. However, I wonder if I can remind you that the little changes will become a great change in your life in the future. All it takes is for you to be determined to do it. You can even ask for support from the church, friends and even agencies. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Ok ai-Sam
