Welcome to the
DONCASTER EQUINE COLLEGE
August 2017 edition
“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.“ Anthony J. D’Angelo The summer holidays already! This is the first year that one of my children doesn’t have the long 6 week break, and won’t be joining us on our family holiday this summer, but instead has made his own arrangements for a break. It will be odd going without him, but we will be making the most of still having two wanting to holiday with Mum and Dad, although I suspect that we won’t see that much of them! August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the time too). Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 18th August. As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated.

We practice over many months becoming a strong team supporting each other on the day to achieve our best. This year was no exception. With a lot of new recruits we have experienced the various competition and gathered a lot of information throughout the day. We triumphed in our PRGHOOLQJ ZLWK ZLQQLQJ ȴ UVW SODFH LQ WKHLU categories. The drill team and banner teams did us proud coming in the top half of the 33 participating in Wing Training day. It is a very long day and our cadets are given time to catch up with friends from other squadrons and also support them during the competition. Could you give 2 hours a month to support an older person to get more out of life? Dennis is 91 and lives alone in Doncaster; his passion in life is all things football. A lot of people we support through Age UK Doncaster are safe, warm and have everything practical they need, but they are often lonely and not doing the things that matter the most to them in life. Since launching in January 2017, Circles is putting a stop to this. Circles put people at the centre of everything we do; we are about all the things that make life that little bit richer. Each Circle has a clear purpose. The purpose of Dennis’s Circle is to keep him involved in football. ‘I love football, I could talk all day about it but it’s not the same when you don’t see many people, especially those with the same interests’. Dennis was matched with our volunteer Alex. They have since attended a charity football match together and have been reminiscing over old team photos. Other people’s Circles involve staying active, cooking or crafts, re-connecting with a faith community or starting dancing again. Circles are seeing great outcomes in Doncaster and we could not do our work without our fantastic community of volunteers here at Age UK. By dedicating just 2 hours a month you can help more people make the most of later life. Find out more by calling our Circles team on 01302 812345.

until 9th September Doncaster Art Club Annual Exhibition. The club’s annual exhibition, including landscapes, portraits and still lives in a wide variety of media. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Howard Hodgkin
Summer is here, lots of listings have closed down for this period – but there is still plenty on, and not least a visit to the Museum of the Year, just up the road in Wakefield. Congratulations to the eversplendid Hepworth on nailing the big prize (lots of money). We look forward to seeing what comes next. Something appears to be on the cards in Doncaster www.doncaster.gov.uk/iconicbuild with a possible new cultural HQ next to the new Council Offices and round the corner from CAST. It’s a bold looking building and in these straightened times, we know what economic good new galleries can do for a town, let alone all the cultural value and self-esteem that they carry. The Central library in the town centre has long looked past its best, and to incorporate the old school, is a great idea, though it looks a bit of an awkward marriage from the artists impression. It’s such a relief that Doncaster isn’t knocking down another wonderful building, but grabbing an opportunity by the horns. The new building is due to open in Spring 2020. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sun Exhibition: until 9 September ‘Podules’ by Jan Niedojadlo These gigantic sculptures are often, though not exclusively, inspired by natural and biological forms. Uniquely, visitors are encouraged to enter the sculptures, to fully immerse themselves within these distinct ‘other worlds’ and experience the sights, sounds and smells within. Niedojadlo describes his work as ‘art to viewed on your back - and not just with eyes and brain - but experienced with your whole body’. Until 2nd September ‘XP School Art Exhibition: Are we Really Free to Choose?’ Over the summer Doncaster Museum will be displaying around 50 paintings created by year 9 students at the XP School in Doncaster. The students have created artwork in a Pop Art style to answer the question ‘are we really free to choose?’ 12

She writes ‘I am inspired mostly by the natural things from my garden. I love experimenting with different printmaking techniques, but I also love to paint. In these paintings I was trying to convey the delicacy and translucent quality of fabric and am always drawn to pattern and colour.’ www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 20 August ‘Open Exhibition’. Until 29 October in the adjacent gallery space ‘Dinosaurs of China’ which is an interactive exhibition running in two venues – also at Wollaton Hall, Nottingham. You will see work which has never been outside of Asia previously featuring 150 million year old fossils and full size dinosaur skeletons, revealing how dinosaurs evolved into birds. www.dinosaursofchina.co.uk with many workshops to accompany. www. lakesidearts.org.uk Cast in Doncaster outside of CAST on Saturday 12 August 12-5pm is ‘Balby-bythe –Sea’ Woodfield Club, Balby www.castindoncaster.com
HILARY CARTMEL
Hepworth Wakefield until 8 October ‘Howard Hodgkin: Painting India.’ Hodgkin died in May, just days before his exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery opened. He was a splendid colourist, with expressive brush strokes and strange physical spaces in his canvases, which are partly pictorial and sometimes entirely abstract. I remember being arrested by one of his paintings whilst visiting the Tate as a child. He had almost painted out the whole picture with a thick cream coloured layer, it was quite a lesson in clearing out the unwanted in a picture. This show is a bit of an odd one, lots of food for thought and plenty to discuss, and the Hepworth – Museum of the Year- is always worth a visit . www.hepworthwakefield.org Sheffield Theatres following on from last month’s palaeontological themes 21 -23 August in the Lyceum ‘Dinosaur World’ described as an interactive new show for all the family. Mayflowers fund raising projects are getting well under way this year and so far the weather is being kind to us. The Scrufts Dog Show in July was a beautiful day and a huge success, it was lovely to see all the dogs that we have rehomed with their new families. Big thank you to all volunteers and everyone that attended. We are holding a LADIES night on the 11th August to be held in reception at Mayflower starting at 7pm. There will be a representative, Jess from Freedom Aloe Vera products. There will be a beautiful candle Company stall, Finishing Touches will bring along handbags, scarves, jewellery and much more. Please come along for a fun evening including coffee/tea and cake. There will be a raffle and great prizes. We are asking that if you would like tickets they are £3.00 per person. Or just come along and pay on the door, but please call the sanctuary 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 to let us know you are coming. It will just give us a rough idea how many people we are catering for on the night. Table Top sale is on the 16th Sept at the Scout Headquarters in Tickhill, there are a few tables left and the charge will be £12 per table. Please call Janice if you would like to reserve one. 07590 455340. Tracy one of our senior kennel carers thought up a brilliant idea to raise sponsorship. She lived in a kennel for 24 hours, she even dressed up like one of our canine friends. They had great fun, it went out on all of the local radio stations and she stayed in a kennel all day and all night.
Finding a forever home She was probably stir crazy by the time she was let out! But she raised lots of money which is the most important thing. Just a quick few lines about the procedure you will have to go through if you would like to adopt one of our dogs at the Sanctuary. It is always an idea to go and visit your chosen dog a couple of times before eventually taking them home. You will have to have a home check, one of our volunteers will come and check that you have a 5ft fence and your garden is fully secure. We also need to know that your chosen dog will be living inside with you and not living outside in a kennel day and night. Our volunteer will also have a chat to make sure you have chosen the correct dog for your lifestyle. If all is well the following Saturday you will then have to attend an induction talk by one of our experienced dog listeners, which most people find fascinating and very interesting. Have a great summer but don’t forget to keep your furry friends cool on hot days with access to plenty of water. If you would like any further information on any of the above please call me 07969 203206. If you would like further information regarding our adoption process please call 01302 711330. Bye for now
Margaret Godley Have a great summer

Dear Friends, This month, the part of the Lord’s prayer we will look at states:
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heavenâ€?. I believe that in order to pray this prayer one needs to know the will of God on earth. I also believe that God’s will is to help people know him. God also wants people to relate with him as children relate with their parents. He wants us to obey his way and surrender our lives to him through his son Jesus. This implies living according to his commands. Praying for God’s will to be done also involves placing into God’s hands the struggles we HQFRXQWHU LQ RXU OLYHV ΖW PD\ EH D Č´ QDQFLDO decision, a relationship that is troubling us, or a responsibility that we have. It is a way of committing our lives to God. Praying for the will of God to be done in and through our lives on earth, as it is in heaven, can also mean that we want to be aligned with the will and purpose of God. Hence, we ask God to empower us to accomplish it. In so doing, we are asking God to help us to be the means whereby God’s purpose might be accomplished - that the justice and peace of God’s kingdom will be real in peoples’ lives. This prayer challenges us to be sensitive to the needs of the world and for guidance in the circumstances in which we encounter in our daily lives. Being sensitive to the needs of the world involve loving as God loves this world. There are many people who may be doing that already. For example, people who care for their relations and neighbours who are ill and others serving as volunteers in many charities. $ TXRWH DWWULEXWHG WR 0RWKHU 7KHUHVD VWDWHV “Christ has no body now but yours No hands, no feet on earth but yours Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world Christ has no body now on earth but yoursâ€?. Hence, kudos to the people who have become Christ’s body, hands, feet, and eyes on this earth. On the other hand, I wonder how many of us say ‘thank you’ to the love we receive from people who have become Christ-like to us and this world. I wonder if I can suggest to you to take some time this month to think of a person or 30 BAWTRY TODAY
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. organisation that is trying to change things for the better in our world. I wonder if you may also want to write a ‘thank you’ thought or prayer on a card. You may decide to post it to them (if possible) or keep it at a convenient place at home and refer to it frequently during the month. Finally, I wonder if you want to become part of Christ’s body by thinking about what you could contribute to the world today, or in the future, to make the world a better place. You may also pray and ask God to be at work in the world, perhaps in particular situations known to you. This can be local, national or global. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Honeysuckle I know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks RU WUHHV GHFRUDWLQJ WKHP ZLWK VSLGHU\ Ă€ RZHUV and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up its toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. Beer
created from nature •
THERE’S A BEER FOR THAT
There are lots of myths about beer. People mistakenly think it's high in calories, contains lots of sugar and is high in fat. None of which are true but it is an easy mistake to make. With such a wide variety of styles, flavours, aromas and colours – there are over 140 styles of beer alone - you’d be forgiven for thinking that the list of what goes into making beer is a long one. But in fact, the truth is much simpler. There are four principal ingredients in beer and they are all natural. More breweries are experimenting with the flavours of their beers by adding in extra ingredients to influence the final flavour/aroma, but they will always use the same four basic ingredients to create their beers in the first place: water, malt, hops and yeast. Each of these natural ingredients contribute flavour and individual characteristics but what, exactly?
44 BAWTRY TODAY
Water - One of the key ingredients in beer is water. It makes up 95% of the finished product. The attributes of the water vastly affect the beer styles, for example, soft water is ideal for lagers whilst hard water is perfect for a porter or a stout. Malt - The sweet base of beer. Most beers are brewed using barley malt, but others also add wheat, rice and oats to the mix to create different colours, flavours and that all important mouthfeel. Some malts produce more fermentable sugars than others, and so will also influence the strength of your beer to a degree. Yeast - A key ingredient of beer. It's an important contributor (up to 50%) to the flavour profile of your beer. As well as converting the sugars from the malts into alcohol, yeast also adds a natural carbonation to the beer.
Hops - Beers’ ‘seasoning’, they are a crucial aspect of brewing. Depending on when they’re added to the brewing process, they are a powerful natural preservative, add bitterness, aroma and contribute to the head of the finished product. There are exceptions to this rule, such as Fuller’s Honeydew that has honey added to the final brew or Brewdog’s Elvis Juice, with the addition of grapefruit juice for an extra bitter kick. But it's those four principal ingredients, all of them natural, that make beer a drink that's full of goodness and such a versatile drink for pairing with food. Bawtry Town Council - SUGUST 2017 MSF Pavilion Town Council representatives attended the BARS Sports Day on the 24th June to help publicise the work undertaken by the Council to residents. The Council thanks Councillors Alan Claypole, Sandy Young, Peter Holland and John Linsley for their support arranging the council stand. This was a great success with many residents taking the time to talk to councillors about our activities.
Community Forum Event Following the sports day event the Council is keen to engage with the community and have arranged a Community Forum meeting to give local residents the opportunity to speak to Councillors, in an informal setting, about our activities and any issues they want us to tackle. The meeting will be held on the 6th September from 7-9pm at The Crown Hotel. The Chairman of the Council will give a brief update on the Councils recent activities and will then open the floor to attendees to raise any local issues that are important to them. We also hope to have contributions from local organisations, such as the Bawtry Residents Group, BARS and the Bawtry Retailers Association. Please therefore come along and meet us! Alternatively if interested parties want to make a presentation at this, or future Community Forum meetings please contact the Clerk to the Council on 01909 239911or at bawtrytowncouncil@gmail.com
Market Hill Taxi rank - Members have received feedback from interested retailers regarding the proposed location of the taxi rank. Members will therefore review a suitable location on Market Hill before a final decision is made. Relevant consents and procedures to bring the amended Traffic Order into effect and facilitate the taxi rank are currently underway. The Council recognises the benefit of ensuring that those visiting the town late at night have a service available to them to leave the area safely and promptly. However the Council does need to ensure that any rank is carefully supervised and therefore is to approach the Licencewatch group in this regard.
Footpath Update - The Council has been looking into the condition of the Market Place footpath for many months and are currently in discussions with DMBC and frontage owners to undertake a comprehensive scheme of repair, which would ultimately enable the footpath to be adopted by DMBC. The complexities of 50 BAWTRY TODAY
establishing ownership and responsibility remain and inevitably hamper a quick resolution. However although the Council doesn’t have responsibility for the footpath, they have, subject to any necessary consents, agreed to undertake some emergency repairs. It is hoped that this will remove the areas posing the greatest risk and prevent accidents in the short term before a comprehensive scheme can be agreed.
Planning – Doncaster Local Plan Consultation DMBC is currently consulting on proposed housing sites in Bawtry as part of a new Local Plan. If approved the sites are likely to be used for housing development over the next 15 years and will include green belt land. It is understood that although 105 units remain the housing target set by DMBC, the proposed sites will only achieve around 30 units with the shortfall in numbers being made up across alternative areas across the borough. We would strongly encourage local residents to review the consultation and have their say. This is an opportunity for local residents to comment and influence where they would like to see development in Bawtry over the next 15 years. The consultation can be viewed via the DMBC website ww.doncaster.gov.uk from 24th July - 21st August. The Council met on the 26th July to consider their response to the consultation.
War Memorial Working Group - Update Relocation of the War Memorial on Great North Road to the Community Library is currently being progressed with a number of companies having now quoted for the works. Grant funding will be needed to complete the scheme but the Council looks forward to relocation to a new unfettered position which gives enhanced access to all those wishing to visit the memorial in the future. The Council will also be discussing its plans with Austerfield Parish Council as several of those named on the war memorial were residents of Austerfield.
Council Meetings & Business The Council is in recess and does not hold a meeting in August. The next ordinary meeting of the Council is on Tuesday 12th September at 7pm at the New Hall Residents and Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings and there is a 15 minute time frame for specific questions to be put to Council. Please come along and get involved.

Update from Councillors
Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors It was great to attend BARRs sports day on 24 June and see the pavilion completed and being so well used. It was really well attended and Rachael enjoyed being on the Community Library stall and the tombola and took the opportunity to ask residents and visitors their views on heritage in Bawtry. The majority of residents and visitors she asked thought that Bawtry did not celebrate its heritage enough; most thought that they had very little knowledge of Bawtry’s history and everyone thought having an information board on Market Hill displaying a heritage trail highlighting important locations was a good to start to making more of our history. This was really useful information to collect and will be included when we submit our bid for the Heritage Lottery Funding. Updates from all the work we have been involved are included below – as always we don’t have room to include everything so please do contact us if you would like more information. Problems at Spar Park (Wharfe Street) Some of the problems at the park have been brought to our attention and this information was passed onto DMBCs area team and they have been asked to patrol the area. Please do contact us if you have concerns that you feel we should be aware of so we can ensure action is taken. Traffic problems Rachael attended the Town Council meeting in July and was asked to pursue a number of highways concerns. One thing I did explain at the meeting is the way in which DMBC’s Highways team carry out their work. Once one of the officers has agreed that work needs to be done such as re-lining and re-painting the Keep Clear sign on Tickhill Road, it is sent to the works department who then complete the work. In many cases it isn’t possible for us to be told how long the work will take which is frustrating but we do regularly check with Highways that the work hasn’t been forgotten and to enquire if a date for completion can be provided. We have received concerns from very worried residents about the speed of cars on Gainsborough Road and cars turning into our out of Church Street and the Pastures. In the past when we have asked the Highways department to make the Church St/Gainsborough Road junction safer we have been told that the area hasn’t experienced problems with accidents and therefore work isn’t going to be undertaken as resources are directed to areas where accidents are occurring. Residents have told us that there are accidents taking place but they are not being reported because to do so is seen as a waste of time. If residents do have any accidents we would encourage you to contact either the police on 101 or DMBC on 736000 and this therefore will influence the decisions that Highways officers are making. We have reported the 30mph slow down sign on Tickhill Road not working; from our observation it does work some time but not every time. The Town Council are asking for a number of improvements which we are happy to pursue but it always 52 BAWTRY TODAY
helps if other residents contact DMBC directly to raise their concerns. Improvements to the flower beds We are pleased to see that following our tour of Bawtry and Austerfield the flower beds on Doncaster Road have had some colourful flowers added to the beds. Problems with overgrown hedges Doug, Chair of the Residents Group and Town Councillor alerted us to the concerns being expressed on the Residents Group Facebook page, namely the overgrown hedges around the Kingswood Estate. Residents had said that they had reported the problem on 3 ocassions and no action had been taken. We have contacted the Street Scene Team who are going to be going out with Doug and identify all the areas of concern and where they are the responsibility of the DMBC, the work will be completed. Over the last two years, the land ownership issues particularly around the Kingswood estate have come to light and many areas are not the responsibility of DMBC. Where residents are responsible for cutting back hedges and it is causing an obstruction, it is DMBC’s encroachment team who are responsible for contacting residents – if there are areas that you have concerns about, please do get in touch. DMBC have a responsibility to respond to complaints from residents – if you complain about something and you haven’t had a response within 14 days, please do get in touch with us – even if it’s just been copied into your communication to the Council as we can chase things up and ensure that work is completed without residents having to complain, 2 or 3 times. Traffic lights at Gainsborough Road I have noticed that there is a longer gap between the light changes since the system was changed which should make the junction safer. Mayflower Ship We are delighted that this is now back home on the Austerfield roundabout. The ship will be planted up and we are waiting for the school holidays so that children and young people can be included in this. Surgeries Our surgeries have now moved to a Saturday for the summer months and they will be at Bawtry Community Library from 10am – 11am on the 1st Saturday of every month, with the next surgery being 5 August. Everyone welcome whether you need assistance with an individual problem or you have concerns that are affecting many people; or if you have suggestions about what you would like to see in Bawtry. BAWTRY RESIDENTS GROUP Firstly, the Residents Group would like to congratulate Bawtry Action for Recreation & Sport ‘BARS’ for an exceptional Bawtry sports GD\ DW WKH 0HPRULDO VSRUWV JURXQG DOO ZKR attended we are sure had a great time. It was good to see the new multisport pavilion open, so all could see and appreciate the hard work put into it by the ‘BARS’ trustees and others associated with this project. On reading this article a new CCTV and burglar alarm system should have been installed and hopefully this may help prevent the mindless breaking in’s that have occurred at the pavilion since its construction. One of the biggest concern’s of the resident’s is WKH SDWKZD\ WKDW UXQV WKH OHQJWK RI WKH 0DUNHW Hill car park, Cllr D Cartwright has raised the issue at the last meeting of the BTC (July). The outcome of this is that the emergency repairs will go ahead. The discussion’s that ensued from Cllr Cartwright’s proposal appeared at times to get quite heated especially with regards to the expenditure required for the emergency repairs, what it would cost and where the monies would come from. Furthermore, before the vote was taken on Cllr Cartwright’s proposal the Chair of the Council acting on the advice of the Clerk of the Council reiterated that Bawtry Town Council legally did not have a ‘Duty of Care’ to the residents of Bawtry with respect to the footpaths poor state of repair and any accidents that might happen as a result of this. This was said to be due to the fact that the ownership of the footpath had not being established so legally the Council was under no obligation to undertake the emergency repairs. 0U - 7KRPSVRQ RI WKH SODQQLQJ GHSDUWPHQW DW '0%& DWWHQGHG WKH %7& PHHWLQJ -XO\ to give details of the proposed consultation that will be starting on the 24th July for four weeks regarding the two new proposed house building sites in Bawtry. 58 BAWTRY TODAY
