Welcome to the

December 2017 edition

“Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but also of reflection” Winston Churchill

December already and the last magazine of 2017. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction. At that time, I was preparing to move house, so we are now approaching our first anniversary of moving into our new home. Many changes have taken place, not least the removal of a couple of internal walls, and a new kitchen into that enlarged open plan space. A few more changes are planned before the year is out!

Christmas at ...

Unit 4, Dower House Square, Bawtry Doncaster, DN10 6LS 01302 481400 | www.downquilthouse.co.uk

The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2018!

Best wishes,

AT AGE UK DONCASTER WE BELIEVE NO ONE SHOULD HAVE NO ONE. NOT AT CHRISTMAS. NOT EVER. We believe that loneliness is not inevitable. People of all ages need connections that matter. Yet for 6,000 older people in Doncaster, loneliness is a daily reality and we don’t just mean at Christmas. A recent survey by Age UK found that nearly 400,000 people aged 65 and over in the UK were worried about being lonely over Christmas and nearly half of the UK was worried about being alone in later life.

Since launching last year, The Circles project at Age UK Doncaster is working to beat loneliness and social isolation throughout the borough. Circles help people to be happier, healthier and more connected with the support of their community. %HFDXVH HYHU\RQH LV GLÎ?HUHQW &LUFOHV work with people to understand their individual needs, passions and interests. THERE’S A BEER FOR THAT

With Christmas dishes being pondered and the accompanying drinks carefully considered, it’s a chance for beer to claim a place at the Christmas dinner table. Aperitif Before we start gobbling turkey, how about an aperitif? Lagers, blonde and golden ales offer a range of flavours from herbal, pine and bready to spicy, citrus and tropical fruit. Serve in a champagne flute to suit the occasion. Starters For your festive fish and seafood you’re spoilt for beery choice. Wheat beers, Belgian witbiers particularly, are extremely adept at bringing out the best in fish. Often brewed with coriander and orange peel they’re spritzy, citrusy and perfectly complement any fish that’s enhanced with a squeeze of lemon. 16 BAWTRY TODAY

Main It’s turkey time, so which beer? Turkey’s soft, easy flavours make great partners for sweet milds, gentle bitters and lagers. Any beer with too much hop power (eg. IPAs) would be too big and blow the turkey apart. So, keep it mellow and go for something with bittersweet balance. Saisons are also a very good option. Their herbal, spicy and tart notes complementing, but not overwhelming, the meat. The spiciness scores a direct hit with the stuffing while their sweetness will contrast the mild bitterness of Brussel sprouts.

Be Like a Sheperd It’s Christmas again! Hooray! Dear Friends, this is the child in me hoping that every day is Christmas. The shepherds’ reaction to checking the facts of the good news resulted in them sharing the news of the birth of the Saviour with everyone they came into contact with – maybe including the people who might have abused and rejected them and possibly, their fellow ‘bandits’. People may not have believed them but they did not care. I supposed they shared the news daily. I wonder if you have caught the buzz of the good news of Christmas and if so, how are you sharing this news. For some of us, we only share the good news and do good at Christmas. Merry Christmas and a happy new year greetings to you..

Luke went further to state that the shepherds, on hearing the good news, hurried to Bethlehem to see for themselves what has happened. If they live in today’s world, we may state that they wanted to check if the news was not ‘fake’.

community Community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary Christmas is not far away and at this time of year we have a calendar full of fund raising events. We struggle every year for people to help with our fundraising. Unfortunately, lots of our volunteers work during the week, so if the events are during the week we do have a problem finding people to help. Therefore, if anyone would like to join a group of us with a Mayflower collection tin, please call our Sanctuary and let us know, that would be terrific. We have a beautiful little Miniature Pincher whose name is Blake. He came from a Municipal Pound and unfortunately has a heart condition. This is treatable with medication however his life will be cut quite short with this problem.

At the moment he loves his walks and he is full of life and for a small dog he has a huge personality. So, it would be so lovely for him to find a foster home for Christmas and beyond. Mayflower will pay any medical bills so no one has to be worried about the expense. We still also have 2 full of life

Staffy puppies and their mum waiting for their forever homes. Our Sanctuary is full of beautiful dogs both cross breeds and pedigrees, so if you looking to give a dog a forever home please come along and have a chat about which dog would suit your lifestyle. Please be aware that over the Christmas period we will not rehome any dog with a family with children. We find that there is too much happening in a family home over this period for any dog or cat to be able to settle in comfortably. We have a super shop within our reception area where plenty of toys, winter dog coats and any amount of cat paraphernalia can be found for your loving pet for Christmas. Please come along have a coffee and a look around I am sure you will find that special something for your beloved pets. A few thank you’s now. Big thank you to Aaron from Greener Plumbing Solutions for rectifying our plumbing crisis. Also, Rob & Steve at Termstall Fencing for fixing our gate. To all of our kennel and cattery careers who do a fantastic job come rain or shine, to Cattery Manager Penny, Kennel Manager Jennie, Caroline office admin, all volunteers, dog walkers and everyone that helps keep our Sanctuary running like clockwork. Have an amazing Christmas and a Happy Peaceful New Year.

Happy Christmas

The Christmas Wreath Until fairly recently in history, certainly up to Victorian times, people could never be certain they would safely survive the harsh winter. So, they developed rituals and displays to help them get through the darker days. One such symbolic display of hope was the Christmas wreath. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. Now we hang them on our doors and use them as table centrepieces because they look wonderfully opulent and festive. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. This became fused with ‘wrethe’ from middle English which means a twisted band or ring of leaves. At this bleak time of year, it’s traditional to use evergreens and other brightly coloured Ă€RZHUV IROLDJH RU IUXLWV WR DGRUQ D ZUHDWK In past times the addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations were taken 44 BAWTRY TODAY

down, the edible parts would be eaten and the bounty of summer could be enjoyed in the depth of winter. Making a wreath is fun and relatively easy. You can make a simple and cheap evergreen circle or push the boat out and create an elaborate bauble ring. You can buy a ring of ÀRZHU DUUDQJHUVœ IRDP 6RDN LW LQ WHSLG ZDWHU and then stick sprigs of evergreen foliage from WKH JDUGHQ ÀRZHUV EHUULHV GULHG IUXLWV QXWV and bows into it using wire if necessary. Or you can make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay. This will need to be held in place using thinner gauge wire. You can then wire in foliage and decorations. I will just warn you about holly though; working with it can be a painful experience so wear gloves and maybe have a box of plasters handy! If you want to try something different you can use a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, threaded popcorn and cranberries or woven red and yellow dogwood cut from your garden DQG LQWHUZHDYHG ZLWK EDWWHU\ RSHUDWHG OLJKWV Use your gardener’s imagination.

Happy Christmas gardening. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors At the time of writing we are a few days ago from two great events that are taking place in Bawtry and Austerfield on 19th and 26th November – Illuminate event and the Christmas event. The latter is getting a reputation as one of the best Christmas events in the area and the former is a new event for the ward and in fact for Doncaster. In previous years, neighbouring towns and villages that have a connection to the Pilgrim Fathers have had many celebrations and events so this year it has been fantastic that Doncaster is hosting such an event. I hope you enjoyed both events. This month’s update is a mixture of local updates, more Doncaster wide issues and some national issues that I hope are of interest to you. DMBC Enforcement Action in Bawtry Residents often complain to me about littering, dog fouling and cars parked illegally. Since being elected in 2015, I am in regular contact with the council’s enforcement team to ask them to patrol the area. Recently I asked for the latest figures and in an 18 month period, in Bawtry just over 150 fines were issued with the majority of these being for illegal parking. The roads where tickets were issued includes 9 roads in the town and the team have said that due to my requests they will continue to patrol the area. Doncaster Council’s Energy Supplier Residents are being encouraged to switch their energy supplier to Great North Energy. Great North Energy are a new supplier brought to you by Doncaster Council who are working with Robin Hood Energy, a not for profit energy supplier wholly owned by Nottingham City Council. Their ethos is to help people get the best energy tariff. Please see www.greatnorthenergy.co.uk for more information or contact DMBC on 736000. Changes to the waste contract I have been contacted by some residents who are being affected by the changes to the clinical waste collection service. If this is affecting you, please do get in touch. Mining statue for Doncaster In October, the Mayor Ros Jones launched a campaign to develop a mining statue for Doncaster. Doncaster has a proud heritage in mining and it has been felt for a long time that this has not been properly recognised in the centre of Doncaster. I know from knocking at doors in Bawtry and Austerfield at election time that we do have a number of miners here. Throughout November there were consultation events to listen to people’s ideas for the statue which were organised by the acclaimed artist Laurence Edwards to devise the artwork. The final design will be revealed in spring 2018 at a special exhibition. 50 BAWTRY TODAY

Credit provider For some families this time of year can be a huge financial burden and councillors have been sent information and a request to spread the word about a not for profit credit provider who are an alternative to high cost credit – Fair for You. The company offers flexible repayment options, ethical loans, free delivery across the UK and an on line quick and easy process. Details of who is eligible and the loan criteria can be found on their website www.fairforyou.co.uk Parking and Speeding Concerns Residents contacted me about having all of Tickhill Road with double yellow lines on both sides and I asked Highways to look at this but they did not feel that this would improve the safety situation. I am pleased to see that the SLOW signs have been painted on Tickhill Road and as someone who backs onto Tickhill Road I have noticed a difference recently – as I write this at nearly 10pm, rather than cars speeding past extremely fast, I would think that the last 3 that have just gone past were driving at 30mph. I have included details again about who to contact to raise your concerns about speeding and parking problems throughout the ward. Also, if you think that the whole of Bawtry and Austerfield should be 30mph then please make your views known to Doncaster Council. • Contact DMBC Highways Department, and tell them your concerns, either by phone or email or by letter • Contact South Yorkshire Police – either by calling 101 or writing to South Yorkshire Police HQ, Carbrook House, Carrbrook, Sheffield S9 2DB or general enquiries enquiries@ southyorks.pnn.police.uk • Contact Caroline Flint, MP on 01302 623330 or caroline.flint. mp@parliament.cuk or write to her at Meteor House, First Avenue, Auckley, Doncaster DN9 3GA Also, if your car is damaged or you have a near miss, or witness excessive speeding, please do report it to the police by calling 101. Why is this important? When we ask for action to be taken due to residents’ concerns and the number of accidents, we often get told that according to police statistics, accidents have not been reported. Surgeries Bawtry Community Library Coffee Morning – from 11-12 on 15th December – but please do not wait for the surgery – get in touch anytime. The Bawtry Residents group... The BRG have now collected over 500 signatures for the road speeds to be reduced to 30mph through Bawtry. This includes all the access roads into the town, the petition is now in the hands of DMBC and regular updates will be reported on the Facebook page and in this magazine. After a successful outing with South Yorkshire Police, again a member of the BRG was assisting with speed related issues on Gainsborough Road in Bawtry. In a half hour period out of 100 vehicles 7 were found to be beyond the set speed limit, this will be ongoing. At last, work on the footpath that runs the length of Market Hill has now been completed, great work done by Cllr Cartwright and others for pushing this through the Town Council. Tickhill Road continues to be of great concern to all who use and live in the area. After emails between the BRG, our Ward Councillor R.Blake and of course DMBC this below is the reply to Rachael Blake from DMBC. Again, this year the China rose celebrated the festival of the Ancestors Chongyang by inviting the local pensioners to a threecourse meal and live music by the 1940’s swing band Swingamathing all completely free of charge, gifts were also presented to the eldest lady and gent and couple.
