Welcome to the
December 2018 edition
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try and keep it all the year” Charles Dickens The December magazine already and the last magazine of 2018. I am no more organised than I have been in previous years, if anything I am less so this year. But I am sure that as always, everything essential will eventually get done. I am looking forward to relaxing for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I know that I am very lucky to be able to do this. There will be a great many people working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services. The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue, as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2019!
Best wishes,

At our November meeting we were treated to a fascinating talk and demonstration by Corin Tomlinson, from Greenwood Bonsai Studio, near Nottingham. Corin is a specialist in the art of creating both indoor and outdoor Bonsai trees, and this has been his trade for over 30 years. He now runs the largest Bonsai nursery in the country.
Special diets catered for with prior notice. To be held on Thursday 13th December at 12.30 for 1pm start.
It was truly an enlightening evening for everyone, as he demonstrated transforming a small conifer into a Bonsai tree. It was like watching ‘Edward Scissor Hand’ in motion!
Ring Sandra on 07928 113863 to book or call into the centre MonFri between 9am- 3pm
At our meeting on Tuesday 4 December, 7.00pm, (at Bawtry Methodist Church Hall) we

Chris as always was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his subject, and Julie did a sterling job with wine pouring and making sure the cheese boards on all the tables were always topped up with delicious breads and more cheese if needed‌though there was enough to feed a small army! During the evening the wine quiz was won by Peter Edwards who scored the highest marks‌I’ll pop round when you open your wine prize! community Community Hello everyone, and welcome to the last write up of the year. We are all starting to think about Christmas and the joy it brings to so many people. However please give some thought to how much volunteer work people give to the Charities they support, whether it’s an animal Charity or many of the other Charities that need help. There are lots of kind people out there giving up all of their Christmas free time to help their nominated Charity. So, let’s do a big thank you to everyone. All of the dogs and cats in our care will receive the attention they deserve over Christmas and with the usual shoe box collections that we are so lucky to be part of our animals will have a super Christmas day. Our kennel assistants will be on hand over the Christmas period to make sure the dogs and cats have plenty of play time with their toys. Keep an eye on Facebook I am sure there will be lots of photos posted. Thank you to all of the girls and guys that work at Mayflower they do such a good job, you are all stars. We have street collections in Doncaster on the 1st and 22nd of December, we will be outside M & S, please come along and say hello. Don’t forget our Santa Paws at Bawtry light switch on this is a new event and will be so exciting. Just a few things to consider if you would like to either donate or contribute to our Sanctuary over the Christmas period. We are desperate for cash donations as we are struggling financially at the moment. We need to be here in the future for the families that are unable to take care of their dogs and cats, whether it’s people that fall on hard times, illness, elderly that have to leave their homes and are unable to take their beloved pets with them, there are many different reasons that people have to give their pets up for adoption. We also have a shopping list of things that you can pick up off the supermarket shelves, wash powder, washing up liquid, poo bags, hand wash and large black refuse bags. We will be grateful for any one of these items. We always need an abundance of towels and blankets in the winter months. Please don’t forget we have a super pet shop in our reception area at the Sanctuary, so if you’re looking for toys, beds, blankets etc. come along and have a browse. Last but not least we are trying to save a little dog that we have called Alice that was left at the side of a road to die. Please read the write up below. Many thanks to everyone that has supported us this year and continue to do so. Thanks to all the kennel and office staff you do a great job.
Help us Save Alice... She lay at the side of a busy road, she had given up and was waiting to die. She was eventually noticed by a kind person (not the Dog Catcher, thank goodness) who managed to catch her but she was still taken to a kill shelter. When we agreed to take Alice, she was Number 93, without a name and without hope, awaiting her fate like so many others. She was transferred to a safe pension, which came at a cost, and treatment was started for her skin and wellbeing. Alice is a mature dog, with only one eye - goodness knows how she lost it -but that doesn’t matter to us. We just want to give her a future that is safe and secure.
To save Alice, we need to raise funds to cover the following costs: £35 per day to keep her safe in the pension £100 to cover the cost of her treatment so far £20 for a 4DX test for heartworm etc £180 for her vaccinations (including Rabies), worming, micro-chipping and arranging her pet passport £200 for her transport to the UK and safety. Can you help us give Alice the life she deserves? Even a small donation will make such a difference If we all help, we will save a life............. Thanks a million
Happy Christmas and New Year. Best Wishes,
Margaret Godley Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Tel 01302 711330

Next, I whizzed up to Preston New Road, you call it PNR. Thankfully I was on a coach from Doncaster with loads of locals. This time over a thousand humans marched to the fracking site. Amazing show of solidarity. Bad news they started fracking. Worse news there have been 34 tremors and earthquakes in just two weeks. I told them this would happen! You have to tell everyone round here and don’t forget we’ve got all those coal mines underground. Their messing is our peril. And yours.

'HDU )ULHQGV If we were to believe the many and varied advertisements found on television at this time of year, we would think that the celebration of Christmas was all and only about indulgence and acquisition. I have lost count of the number of times the phrase ‘treat yourself’ is used. And although this is now an integral part of the celebration of Christmas, it is not the whole story In fact, we need to return to the story, the story of a baby born in a Bethlehem stable, the place where Christmas began, to truly understand the season and to ‘live it’ to its fullest potential. For church going folk, throughout December, during the Christian season of Advent, we put a GLÎ? HUHQW VSLQ RQ WKH EXLOG XS WR WKH JUHDW IHDVW RI Christmas.
$17Ζ&Ζ3$7Ζ21 Like the excited child, asking how many more sleeps until Christmas, we too approach Christmas with a spirit of excitement and anticipation. This is the time when we see how much God loved us ordinary folk by becoming one of us, a vulnerable child not a king, born in a stable, not a palace. We celebrate that God is with us and will never leave us and we wait expectantly to hear this good news again.
35(3$5$7Ζ21 Alongside the frenzy of present buying, list making and card sending, the cleaning, shopping and
visiting, we also take time to prepare spiritually for Christmas. This sometimes includes some seasonal reading, spending time in silence, and exploring a new way of praying. And in church we enjoy Christingles, Nativities, carol singing and the odd mince pie and seasonal mull. We hope you will be able to join us for at least some of these.
+23( But if there was only one way for us to approach this festive season, I would wish it to be with a sense of hopefulness. Let us be sensitive to the fact that for some in our communities Christmas is a time of loneliness or despair and perhaps rather than focussing on our own neediness consider for a moment the needs of others, perhaps by making a charitable donation to a homelessness charity or volunteering with an organisation that supports the housebound elderly. For hope is something we can give to others and in return we may become tentatively more hopeful for ourselves, for tomorrow, for humankind, and for the world in which we live. May you know times of true anticipation, preparation and hope this coming season. And may you all know God’s love, joy and peace throughout Advent, Christmas and the coming New Year. Many blessings

3DVWRUȇV 3DJH My wife and I have entered the next stage of life: our daughter is now married and, therefore, Christmas becomes complicated... For the last 20 years, it has been relatively simple – family stockings opened before breakfast, “big” presents opened after breakfast, then church followed by Christmas dinner and the evening spent with each of us engrossed in our gifts. Like many other families, we also have our own little Christmas traditions which help make it a Carter Christmas. But now it’s going to be less simple: will my daughter and her husband spend the day with us or with his family, or will they divide the day between the two? What happens to our beloved family traditions? It won’t be the same now. What should our daughter do – impose the Carter way on her husband? Quietly allow her husband shoe-horn her into his family’s traditions? How do they go about starting their own habits? Some people in our position start a whole new tradition – having a particular meal/ party/ event that involves the original family unit and their partners, but on a day other than Christmas Day. As much as I like the idea of a big, special meal; 30 BAWTRY TODAY
the problem is December is full of such already; perhaps we should start a new Carter Family Christmas Tradition in February. Life does not stand still, it is constantly changing and evolving. The trick that we all need to master is adapting appropriately. Statisticians tell us the proportion of people attending church jumps once they reach the age of 40 and continues to rise as people get older. This makes sense to me as two things happen as we get older; 1) We tend to become parents and that throws up all sorts of questions; from pondering the SRLQW RI H[LVWHQFH WR WU\LQJ WR ȴ QG ZLVGRP UHJDUGLQJ SDUHQWLQJ IURP ZKHUHYHU ZH FDQ ȴ QG it. 2) As our bodies slow down and we begin to lose some of those we love, we become acutely aware of our own mortality and we seriously start thinking about what, if anything, happens after death. One beautiful thing about the God of the Bible is that He is not just for the small child, the parent or the elderly; but relates perfectly to all of us at ZKDWHYHU VWDJH RI OLIH ZH ȴ QG RXUVHOYHV :KHQ Jesus gathered his closest followers around Him, he chose young men starting in business, academics, a middle-aged civil servant, a restless radical, women who were rich because of their husbands’ jobs, etc. He also rebuked adults when they tried to chase children away. Regardless of how my daughter and her husband decide to celebrate Christmas, I know we will share the Christmas Day service with them. This is when together we will wonder at God becoming a human being; the One who chose to become “Emmanuel” – God with us. If you don’t do that already, then that is the tradition I would encourage you to start this Christmas.

Rupert explains that the postZDU SODQQHUV ZKR LQČľ LFWHG such features as ‘the Great Wall of Basingstoke’ on the town, were politically-motivated and bent on destroying all traces of its past. Hilariously told, it is a story that neatly illustrates the ugliest episode in England’s architectural history. The Bawtry Town Council Events Group carried out its inaugural event at the Bawtry Sports pavilion on the 27th of October, a Halloween party was held for the children of the community and the event went very well and all the children enjoyed themselves. Thank you to Cllr Alan Claypole and Bawtry Retailers Association Chair Ross Jarvie for dressing up to judge the best dressed child in a Halloween costume. A total of 70 tickets were sold for the event and many thanks to the BTC for supporting the event. Hopefully the event will continue for many years to come. The Events Group chaired by Cllr Alan Claypole and members of the group are now looking forward to the Christmas Event which is to be held at Bawtry Hall for the senior citizens of Bawtry, which will be reported on in next month’s Bawtry Today. Despite this fact, our residents during a litter pick collected twelve bags of rubbish from the area. Can you imagine what the area would look like if it was not for these individuals, well done to them and thanks for all your support. The next litter pick will be on Saturday the 1st of December at 10 am. The area to be covered is Gainsborough Road. Sadly, to say that the War Memorial was not in place for remembrance Sunday that was not in anyway the fault of the BTC, unfortunately the stone mason originally engaged by the BTC gave back-word just before the work was scheduled to commence. Update from Councillors
Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper
Your DMBC Councillors Next Litter pick – 10am – 1 December – meeting at The Ship, Gainsborough Road It has been a busy October/early November with some lovely community events and with 2 big events for Bawtry coming up in Illuminate and Bawtry Christmas it is good that we have so much going on. I attended the Macmillan event organised by Anita and Sandra at the New Hall which had some great stalls, lovely cakes and it was great to see the community attending and supporting such a good cause. 11 November was the Remembrance Service and Parade and again it was so good to see the community come out in force to support this. St Nicholas’s was the location for this years’ service and the church was packed with people of all ages with many standing at the back of the church. Illuminate which is part of the lead up to the Mayflower 400 celebrations will be taking place on 18 November. The parade brings together Austerfield and Bawtry and 3 schools have been involved in creating the lights as well as boat building at the Community Library and is an opportunity to remember the Pilgrim Fathers from our area. The event has been organised by a dedicated group of volunteers and led by the Austerfield Study Centre volunteers who have worked for many years not only to provide a fantastic community centre with something for all ages but also to fundraise to be able to put Austerfield on the map with their William Bradford connections. This hasn’t been an easy task as bigger places such as Plymouth and Retford have had lots of support and funding and as we move towards 2020 it is important that Doncaster Council does all it can to ensure Austerfield takes it rightful place in the Mayflower celebrations. Litter picks Thank you to the group of volunteers who did a wonderful job of clearing up Tickhill Road. About 10 bags of rubbish were collected and we were all pleased with how much better it looked. We are all amazed about what we collect – the most unusual thing as well as the bottles with some liquid in (!), rubber gloves and tin foil was a camping chair that someone had chosen to discard in the bushes. We are planning to carry on throughout the winter months, so please do come and join us – always 1st Saturday of every month at various locations. Where we are meeting is always on the Residents Group Facebook page or give me a ring to find out where we are. Community Conversation – new service starting at Bawtry Community Library Every Monday from 1-3 at Bawtry Community Library, Doncaster Council staff will be available to meet with residents to provide information about how to stay independent,

improve well-being, receive information about physical and mental health, volunteer opportunities and lots more. This is a new approach that Doncaster Council Adult Services is taking to enable people to stay as independent as they want to be. No appointment is necessary – please do drop in. Quick round up of issues I am dealing with lots of different issues including those listed below, so can’t include them in detail – please do get in touch for more information Problems with reporting concerns to Doncaster Council about fly tipping – due to a recent upgrade there have been problems in using the system – this has now been resolved Yellow lines on Top Street – these have now been removed Bawtry Hall verge and trees – due to this requiring traffic management control to be done properly other areas have had to be prioritised – we are first on the list for January so a nice for the New Year Problems with overhanging bushes and verges/ overgrown trees – I went out with DMBCs street scene team to show them areas that need attention – this work will be done and where possible the street sweeper will be used as well Dumped rubbish and fly tipping on High Common Lane – this has now been cleared Cold Calling initiative – Tree estate residents were visited by Trading standards and Community Safety in October as part of the Rogue Traders week. Currently it is the only area that is covered by the Cold Calling zone but I have asked for this to be extended – do let me know if you feel it should be your area as well Future Surgeries Due to not being available every time to call into the Coffee Morning I am looking to have surgeries in different locations throughout 2019. More details will be provided in my January update but if you would like me to include your area please do let me know. Please get in touch with us if we can assist with any way.
