Welcome to
the DECEMBER 2014 edition
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Charles Dickens Christmas is nearly upon us again! I can’t believe that I am writing my December welcome already. At the time of writing there are still over 5 weeks until Christmas but, as I have barely started my preparations that doesn’t seem very long at all! Christmas week marks 10 years since I returned to Tickhill, having spent the previous 15 years living in a variety of different locations. It doesn’t seem possible that 10 years have passed so quickly, or that early in the New Year we will be marking the 10th anniversary of Today Publications. Over the last few months we have been running giveaways for tickets to see Peter Pan at Doncaster Racecourse. Sadly during November the decision was made to cancel the Pantomime which left us wondering what to offer our prize winners instead. The excellent news is that Doncaster Racecourse have agreed to offer family tickets to their Family Fun Day on 29th March instead. Thank you very much to Doncaster Racecourse, I am sure that our winners will enjoy this alternative day out. The January issues will be delivered to you late December; most people will receive them somewhere between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Tuesday 9th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas.
Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2015!
Best wishes, Paula x

Foot and ankle problems are highly prevalent with the sporting population perhaps being more vulnerable to such problems. In our clinic, foot problems are a factor in a great many of our runners but also in people who participate in any weight bearing exercise (including walking) and indeed those for whom standing is a large part of their occupation. The foundation for achieving good balance, stability and posture lies with the foot. Without these, we may be troubled by injuries such as low back pain, groin problems, knee pain or Achilles trouble or may experience poor performance.
• Flexibility • Balance and stability • Breathwork • Functional strength • Posture awareness • Plyometrics All classes are pre-bookable at £7 per hour following the course you can run with us payable as a 6 week block 3 times per week for FREE!

Many people spend a considerable amount of time choosing the ‘perfect’ pair of trainers and yet perhaps need to consider the foot itself. The sole of the foot is extremely sensitive to allow a constant stream of information to be relayed back to the nervous system so your body can make automatic adjustments necessary to maintain your body’s alignment. A common problem is where the foot is held in a rigid position during activity which impairs the feedback through the sole of the foot and balance and stability are diminished. Testing your feet… Remove your shoes and socks and stand on one leg. Is your whole foot rocking from side to side? Are your toes scrunched up? Are the tendons on the top of your foot noticeably raised? If you answered yes to any of these questions you would likely benefit from addressing the function of the foot. Physiotherapy can assess this more closely and work towards restoring a flexible and effective foot.

community Hello everyone. Where has this year disappeared to? We like to hope our joys have outweighed our heartache and we have all made a difference to the animals that have been and are still in our care. We have recently rescued a lovely Labrador X and after being with us a few days she produced 5 beautiful puppies. She is now safe and well in her warm bedroom with her babies tucked up with her. Another one of many sad stories is a 12 year old standard poodle with such a lovely nature. Her owners thought her a bit of a nuisance as she was old and handed her to us without a backward glance. We are hoping that some kind person comes along and maybe fosters her. But until then she is being taken care of by our wonderful staff and volunteers. There are lots of stories to be told but we must concentrate on the positives, that when dogs and cats come to us no matter what the circumstances they are warm and safe with us. We are one of the few rescue centres that still carry out home visits to make sure all of our dogs will be taken care of in loving homes where all the family want a dog, that fences are high enough also that the garden is secure so no one can escape. It also enables us to check out that you have chosen the correct dog that will fit into your lifestyle.
We have 2 beautiful young marmalade cats that are still waiting for there forever homes. These are the ones that survived being left in a sack at the side of the river. It would be so lovely to think they have knees to curl up on for Christmas. A little now about our recent Halloween party days. Everyone had a great time so thank you everyone that came along and had fun. We raised lots of money so thank you again. This was mentioned in the last months edition but I will just remind you again, in case you are amongst the first to receive a December magazine and see this in time. The accomplished artist Diane Hill is having an art exhibition at the Methodist church lounge in Tickhill on the 29th November, 10-3 there will be lots happening. Food, raffle, sherry and I will be there with my dog Blossom So I hope to see you there. On 6th of Dec and 21st December we will be outside M & S in Doncaster with our funny Christmas hats rattling tins hoping that the people of Doncaster come up trumps as usual and make these days so worthwhile. So we will look forward to seeing you then. Come and say hello we love to listen to your lovely animal stories. We are also outside Pets at home on 21st December so I do hope the weather will be kind to us all. On 7th December don’t forget Santa Dash which will be great
Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.
Finding a forever home fun at Sandall Park in Doncaster . If you would like to take part and help to raise money for our Sanctuary please give Barbara a call on 07975540533. Don’t worry they will not ask you to race a marathon it’s only a mile and you can walk, run, jog just do your own thing. But what a terrific sight hundreds of Santas all in one place. Bring along your dogs dress them up and they may win a prize. You will keep them warm too. Please come to see us if you are looking for that special pet to share your life. Telephone 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 we will be happy to help. We would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity throughout the year. Also big thank you to all staff and volunteers, not forgetting the ladies who take care of our shop in Manton
Wishing everyone a happy Christmas and peaceful new year from DOO DW 0D\Ç RZHU Sanctuary.

Eating with the locals in Barcelona Lee Jackson Report from
It all changed with the Olympics in 1992 Xavier explains, before this time the site of the Olympic village had been an area of disused industry and a dirty coastline with an equally dirty sea. Fast forward 22 years and the city is transformed, very much the view of Xavier, a proud Catalonian business owner who has returned to the city after 7 years in New York. As he says “where else can you get the city and beach mix that Barcelona offers, a lovely beach area and promenade combined with a vibrant innovative city that has been shaped both by the creations of Gaudi, by its historic centre and through the contemporary designs of recent times such as the Iconic W hotel and the Agbar Tower” This view is matched through the visitor numbers. Pre the Olympic Games Barcelona would not have been high on the agenda for foreign visitors. Xavier explains that before hosting the global sporting event the language on the streets was almost entirely Catalan whereas now in the popular sightseeing areas it is more likely that you will hear almost any other language! Says Xavier “it is hard to think of an Olympic host city that can point to such a transformation in its fortunes as that seen by Barcelona” As tourist interest has grown the city has responded with a glittering array of boutique and luxury hotels and fantastic dining options, and as always it helps to have the inside knowledge of a local to experience the best of the local cuisine. On Xavier’s recommendation we visit Martinez which offers stunning views
of Bliss Travel of both the city and the harbour. The restaurant serves “Probably the best Paella in Barcelona” and Xavier explains that the city shares it’s fondness for the famous rice based dish with Valencia due to the shared Catalan heritage. The mixed seafood and chicken version is excellent but superseded by the Black Paella recommended by my host and coloured and flavoured by the squid’s ink. The black version is aesthetically the most unappetising plate of food I have ever witnessed and resembles the burnt black residue of a kitchen disaster! The reality though is quite the opposite with a wonderful rich flavour that leaves me stealing more of my host’s food than I consume of my own dish. For lunch the following day we visit La Barraca on the beachfront. I have the Bollota to start (Iberian cured ham from acorn fed free range pigs) followed by oven baked fish and shrimps with tomato and potato, the flavours of the fish infuse with the tomato and potato and as the dish is served from the pan I am encouraged to mop up all of the juices with the freshly baked bread. Here I am also encouraged to suck the body of the shrimp to witness the real flavour of the food. My host is both pleased and amused with my enthusiasm to engage with this practice but I have to agree it does lead to the real flavour On my hosts recommendation that
evening we dine at Els Pescadors a locals restaurant serving the best fish in the city. The restaurant terrace resides in the square of an old neighbourhood that preserves the flavour of the ancient city and the flavour of the location is surpassed by that delivered on the plate. After a sumptuous starter of clams in white wine sauce duly mopped up with Catalan tomato rubbed bread I have a main course of cod with garlic, piquillo peppers and smoked paprika, the final ingredient being a long-time favourite of the Iberian Peninsula. The food is excellent but priced accordingly and if it were not for the generosity of my host I would certainly reserve a repeat visit for a special occasion. Beyond these restaurants Xavier recommends also Arenal a good option for Paella and seafood on the beach front at Barceloneta, and also Barcanete for expensive but outstanding tapas close to Las Ramblas . My choice for the stay is a good one. From a wide offering of boutique options I go for the 5 star Claris Hotel, well situated for La Sagrada, an easy stroll to the central shopping area and just two minutes from a direct rail link to the airport.

BAWTRY RESIDENTS GROUP
group, and represent the collective views of residents. As a group it is felt that we can have more influence, and engender a greater sense of achievement and pride in the community.
The Bawtry Residents Group (BRG) will be launched at a meeting in The Crown Hotel on 26th November 2014 at 7:00 pm. Regular monthly meetings will then be held throughout 2015. The proposal (to be ratified) is for the last Thursday in the month at 7:30 pm, starting on Thursday 29th January. Although the meetings will be held at The Crown, the Group remains wholly independent, and all residents are welcome to attend. It is accepted that the various organisations within Bawtry all have their own ‘agendas’, but it is important that we all work together and find solutions to improve the town for the good of all. BRG will be recognised as a democratically elected
The intent is that BRG will work alongside the Town Council, and actively engage with local residents. Good communication is considered essential if we are to move forward. Change will likely take time, but we are determined to get things moving! Residents have identified many issues of concern. These are currently being prioritised, and action plans will be presented to the January Group meeting for approval. High on the agenda are likely to be the vitality and changing nature of the town (balance of day/ night time economies), and Traffic & Parking issues. If you are a resident of Bawtry, and care about your town, then please get involved or, at least register as a member of the Group – so that you can be kept informed. Mattersey Primary
Cooking up a storm with Rob Jessop. This half term at Mattersey Primary, we have been fortunate in being able to work alongside Rob Jessop, a chef who trained at River Cottage. Rob lives locally and operates his own restaurant from his home! Rob has been coming into school each Thursday afternoon to work with a group of willing parent volunteers. Those involved have been cooking wholesome, healthy meals to take home for tea. Parents and children have been working together during these sessions and have so far created a ‘Marrow and Chickpea Curry’, bread and pizzas – all made from scratch with basic, healthy ingredients. Feedback so far has been really positive and the children look forward to each session.
Upcoming events……
The Parent/Pupil sessions are followed by an after school club, where children have been learning to cook simple meals that they could help with at home……. It looks like we could have a few budding chefs in our midst!
Our Christingle service will be held on Friday 19th December at 1:30pm at Mattersey All Saints’ church. We would like to extend a warm invitation to all who would like to attend either of the above events.

Dementia Peer Support Groups
Methodist Minister
Talking about your worries and problems can be a very good way of releasing some of the stress that can build up when you’re a carer. Your family, friends and the medical and social work team can all listen to your concerns. But sometimes it’s best to talk to someone who knows exactly what you’re going through, because it’s happening to them too. Other carers can offer kindness, sympathy, understanding and advice, and they can make you feel less isolated.
Dear Friends,
Christmas is a time of presents. Presents are given to friends, relations and sometimes to long lost friends and acquaintances. Most children get their wishes met at Christmas because some people believe that Christmas is all about the children. However, whether presents or children, we are reminded that Christmas is about someone’s birthday.
Anyone living with Dementia/Alzheimers, or, those who have concerns about their memory, are very welcome to come along to our peer support groups. Christians believe that the greatest present God gave to humankind is his son, Jesus. He was born on Christmas day to Mary and Joseph, a humble couple. Jesus lived with his parents in obedience and learned his father’s trade – carpentry. The bible says that he grew in stature and wisdom. Jesus grew up to become very powerful but he did not use his power to exploit people as some do. He used his power to heal, free those in prison of sin, and to tell the good news of God’s salvation to people. That was not the end of his story. Jesus died for the sins of the world. Furthermore, Christians believe that this Jesus rose from the dead three days after he died and he is in heaven praying for each one of us. I wonder if you would agree with me that it is important to celebrate the birthday of such a person. Hence, churches throughout the Doncaster borough and its environs have planned activities and invite them to join in celebrating the joy that come with the Christmas season. The churches’ activities include worship services, carol singing, party times, prayer times, and times of reflections. I wonder if you can consider this important invitation and participate in at least a few of these activities so as to enjoy the fun and blessings that come with the birth of Jesus. Hoping to see you. May God grant you peace. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. From the Methodist Minister,

Misson & Springs WI Good food, good company, a not-too-bad glass of wine provided the recipe for another excellent evening in Misson. Our meeting on 29th October gave us an opportunity to catch up on all our news as we tasted the dishes brought in by our members, who also provided the recipes to share, and we all went home with great plans to make at least three of them that very weekend. We were happy, as always, to welcome Anita Love from Phoenix cards who brought her display for us to choose and order some Christmas cards. On 26th November, we look forward to meeting Kirsty Champ who will demonstrate and help us to make our own lanterns to brighten up a dark winter’s evening. We shall also be putting the finishing touches to our Christmas party, with our now traditional pie and peas as an antidote to all that turkey, and getting ready to guess who our members are from their childhood photographs. Next year’s calendar is now finished and it appears that food and drink play quite a large role in the programme. We look forward to your joining us, either as a member for the whole year or as a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be made very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T

Tickhill Ukulele Group 10 or 15 years ago, the ukulele was only ever really seen to be used by either George Formby enthusiasts playing, more often than not as a guilty pleasure, to audiences who would smile awkwardly and roll their eyes at the quality of the jokes, or bought as a children's toy by parents who really meant to buy their offspring a guitar. Fashions change, and the instrument has seen a major resurgence in recent years, with artists such as Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and Train using it to write serious heartfelt songs and achieving equally serious sales success worldwide. Many primary school teachers are seeing the ukulele as an ideal starter instrument for children. Its diminutive scale makes it perfect for little hands. Having only four strings makes learning chords much less complicated. The strings themselves are made of nylon and are very easy to press down. This means that new starters don't experience the same soreness of the fingers that is associated with learning to play guitar.
Brett, an experienced musician, son Harry (7) who is himself a budding musician and Sarah, a total novice who somewhat grudgingly allowed herself to be talked into taking part and found she quite liked it, invite people of all ages and abilities to come and have a go. "Whether old or young, an experienced player or total novice without an instrument, who would like to try one of ours first before they go out and buy one, whatever style of music you like, we hope that we can find something for you." "...we even welcome people who just want to come and sing along, the kettle will be on and the more the merrier." Brett is also happy to provide advice on buying a new ukulele or help with practical matters such as tuning and replacing strings.

This renaissance has helped to spawn many local groups up and down the country where people can play and sing happy songs in an unselfconscious manner with other like-minded people. Pastor’s Page As Christmas comes round again, us men find ourselves panicking – what to buy the lady in our life? She says she doesn’t want anything, just a rest – but if you fail to get her something romantic, insightful and expensive then you’re in the doghouse. At least I have never failed as spectacularly as some – how did one husband ever think that his wife would appreciate a jar of anti-aging cream, even if it did cost £50?
I hope receive presents that you truly value this Christmas and that you remember to say thank you for the greatest gift of all. The three churches in Bawtry will be doing just that at 10:30am Christmas Day; we would love for you to come along to; be that in St Nicholas Church, the Methodist Church or with my church in The New Hall.
Clothing is always dangerous; quite apart from the challenge of getting the style and label right is the size issue; buy one size too big and you get accused of thinking her heavier than she is, one size too small and you’re telling her she needs to lose weight. Get it wrong by 2 or more sizes and you’re sleeping on the sofa until February.
Bawtry Evangelical Church
Anything remotely connected to household chores is a no, no. “But darling, you spend so much time washing dishes I thought you’d appreciate some glammed up rubber gloves”. Avoid giving her anything that could be perceived as something you would like – power tools for example. Or a James Bond DVD. Or anything at all related to cars. This tricky game works in the opposite direction too; most men I know have received presents that they weren’t overjoyed at – “fashionable” jumpers, low quality tools, or anything to do with personal hygiene. We have all had to smile and say thank you through gritted teeth. If only Christmas could guarantee us one gift that is very expensive, perfectly suited to us, a heart stopping statement of love and would last us our whole lives. That is exactly what God did that first Christmas – in giving us His Son. As one writer in the Bible put it: See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! Did you notice the word, “lavished” – now that’s what I call a gift. Seeing your children over Christmas T
he Christmas period can be a very difficult time for a child whose parents have separated. It is vital that parents remember that the most important person, especially at this time of year, is the child. Most children of separated parents, if asked what they would like to happen over the Christmas period, would say that in an ideal world they would like to mum and dad to be together and the whole family to be happy. Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world. This means that Christmas can be a very tough time for a child, which can be made much worse if parents cannot reach an amicable agreement after the arrangements to be made over the Christmas period. It is understandable that each parent wants to be able to create the perfect Christmas for their child. However as a parent you need to try to put yourself in your child’s shoes and imagine how they are feeling. Any conflict between parents will have a negative impact on the Christmas festivities, and memories of this can remain with a child for a very long time. It is important to try and agree arrangements for the Christmas period well in advance. If it is left until Christmas Eve, this will only cause problems for everyone. Plans will have already been made. Even if there are regular arrangements for contact in place, it is always worth checking with the other parent to make sure that there are no misunderstandings.
It can be especially important at this time of year to remember that a child loves both parents, and does not want to hear or see any fighting or arguments. It may be helpful to consider the following when making arrangements for Christmas: 1
2 3
4
5 6
Your child is the most important person whose needs should be considered when making arrangements for Christmas contact. Ask the other parent to work with you on this issue. Remind your child, and yourself, that Christmas is one day, and that there will be plenty of other special occasions over the next 364 days. Do not speak negatively to your child about the other parent or criticise the other parent’s plans. Do not upset your child by having an argument or heated discussion at contact handover. Protect your child from any disagreement between you and your former partner, and make every effort to ensure that the child does not pick up on any hostilities.
It is always a fine balancing act to get the contact arrangements right, but it is worth it to ensure a happy Christmas period for your child.
If you do need legal advice on this or any other family law issue then please contact Rhona Jenkins on 01777 703827 or for an appointment.

Garden View
Christmas past made present Long before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. 44

At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible decorations would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter.
a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! Merry Christmas.
Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee. .

Waste and Recycling Collections over Christmas and New Year. Doncaster Council is reminding residents that there will be changes to their waste and recycling collections over Christmas and New Year. This year waste and recycling collections will be different to previous years as collections will continue throughout the festive period. There will be a borough wide black bin collection during week commencing 22nd and 29th December 2014. Your normal collection day will change and your bin day could be earlier than normal. We strongly advise residents to be aware of changes to avoid missing a collection. Please ensure that your bin, box and sacks are put out for collection by 7:30am on the correct day as collection times will change due to the increased amount of waste and recycling presented for collection. SANTA. SENTIMENT AND SHOPPING! The festive season is upon us but as we welcome you to our December editorial we will have already had our annual Bawtry Christmas Time Event. It’s great to see such a team spirit amongst Bawtry businesses who worked really hard to make this year’s event one that everyone enjoyed. We hope you had fun. However, if you didn’t manage to get all your gifts and festive commodities at the event remember that our hugely popular ‘Bawtry Courtyard Farmers Market’ is going to continue throughout the winter. You can enjoy markets on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. Congratulations are in order this month and we warmly share the successes of ‘The Vanilla Rooms’ who recently celebrated 10 years in business. Also, ‘The Cherry Blossom Bakery’ won the ‘Wedding Industry Awards Best Cake Design Award’ for the North East and ‘And She Knows’ are finalists in the ‘Stars Best Shop Awards 2014’.
“Our warmest thanks go to Paul and Natalie which has allowed us to install this vital piece of equipment in the Crown Hotel and which could help to save lives within the town,” said Rebecca Dickenson Chair Bawtry Retail Association. “Over 500 public access defibrillators are located across South Yorkshire and we are very proud to be able to provide this facility in Bawtry.” Whilst training is not necessary to use the defibrillator, members of Bawtry Retail Association, staff from the Crown Hotel and members of the Bawtry and Doncaster British Heart Foundation received familiarisation guidance from Emma Scott Community Defibrillator Officer from Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Brian Swift Chair Bawtry branch British Heart Foundation commented, “For every minute without CPR after a cardiac arrest a person’s chances of survival are decreased by 10 percent. We hope we never have to use it in Bawtry but these statistics show just how important this investment is and what a difference it could make.” Further discussions are now taking place with Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust to establish a First Responder scheme in Bawtry. T
December 6th also sees ‘Small Business Saturday’ take place which was launched three years ago to raise the profile of small businesses and the vital part they play in communities and the economy. We know that as Bawtry residents you support us, but how about passing on the message to friends and family. We are a gem waiting to be discovered! One of our longest established restaurants, China Rose, will once again be inviting everyone to buy a wooden heart tree decoration for just £2.00, write a message on it to a loved one and hang in on their ‘Remembrance’ tree in their car park. All proceeds will be split between PACT (Parents' Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia) at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the British Heart Foundation Don’t forget that you can find out lots of information from our website www.visitbawtry.com.
