Hello to everyone from Mayflower Sanctuary, I would like to say how overwhelmed we are to have had so many treats, toys, blankets, food and lots more brought to us over the Christmas period and they are still coming. Everyone’s generosity is amazing. All our residents had a wonderful Christmas getting into their parcels and tiring themselves out playing with their new toys. We have had the busiest December and January we have had for a few years. However, we did take a view before re homing over the Christmas period. We don’t like to re home over this time if there is to be a full house or lots of activity which is pretty normal at Christmas. We need our new pets to be given a chance to settle down before subjecting them to a riotous household. When I went to the Sanctuary last Saturday I actually saw an empty pen, I have really never seen that previously, however it won’t be long before it is taken as we still have a list of waiting dogs. Our cattery transformation has started so all of the cats have been moved to a safe place at the opposite part of the Sanctuary whilst the work is taking place. We should have new cat pens up and running in a few weeks I am told. We are organising a big event to raise funds on May 18th it is a

Greenhouse Joy I am an impatient gardener. By February I am always eager to get started and my greenhouse means that I can do just that.

You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but I like to because it lets me get an early start in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants alive through the winter. When I had an unheated greenhouse my frost-tender plants rarely survived.

A greenhouse means that I don’t fear the weather, I can potter in my garden all year round and I can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and it’s well worth trying to incorporate one into your space.

I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t smell and doesn’t produce the excessive amounts RI ZDWHU YDSRXU DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK SDUDI¿ Q 0DNH VXUH \RX XVH D TXDOL¿ HG HOHFWULFLDQ DQG WKDW all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it very economical.

Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems.

At the other end of the year make sure you have ventilation, or your plants will cook. If you can afford it go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch.

Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy as big a greenhouse as you can accommodate because I guarantee that no matter how big it VHHPV DW ¿ UVW \RX ZLOO ¿ OO LW You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. It’s important to have level foundations 38 BAWTRY TODAY

I arrange my greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for my tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so I can collect rainwater. It’s my little haven in February; where I plant seeds and imagine what my garden will look like in a three months’ time.

Bawtry Town Council - FEBRUARY 2018 With the commencement of a new year Bawtry Town Council is hoping to further a number of projects in 2018. If residents have any areas of concern they wish the Council to tackle or ideas for future improvements please contact either the Clerk to the Council or one of our Councillors.

Boxing Day Grove & Rufford Hunt in Bawtry

Following our decision not to allow the Hunt the use of the Market Hill car park for their Boxing Day meet (our website bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk has a Notice on the “News” page describing how and why that decision was made) the Hunt sent an email to us on 21st December 2017 in which they informed us they had been invited to Bawtry again, i.e. for Boxing Day 2018, and that they hoped we will take a different stance on that invitation. If and when the Hunt makes a request to us, Council will then make a decision. It is not possible to predict what that decision will be. It is possible to say, however, that it is likely that Councillors will be more sympathetic to such a request if Grove & Rufford Hunt can demonstrate to us that they respect and abide by the law. This may be achieved if the convictions of their three members for fox hunting are successfully appealed. If that does not occur, the Hunt can take some sanction against them, and make it clear they disapprove of their members’ behaviour. Crucially, the Hunt could give us an assurance the three individuals will not be involved in the Boxing Day Meet. As our Notice makes clear, we sought such an undertaking previously, but it was not forthcoming. BTC is aware the Boxing Day Hunt Meet is valued by some residents and by some parts of our business community. We are therefore approaching Bawtry Retail Association and suggesting to them that they may persuade the Hunt to accept the compromise we have sought if their members’ appeals against conviction are unsuccessful.

However we are aware none of the current units are fitted externally to a building allowing unfettered 24 hour access by the public. The Council is therefore investigating the provision of a further unit in the town.

Members are concerned about the proposed closure of the NatWest bank in May and the quality of Post Office services currently available in the town and are lobbying both organisations in respect of maintaining or enhancing services

Boundary Signs The Council has now obtained planning permission for ornate sponsorship plaques to be available on the new town boundary signs. Any business or organisation who wants to advertise on one of the 5 plaques available should contact the Clerk to the Council.

Neighbourhood Plan The recent public exhibition for the Draft Neighbourhood Plan was well attended, although written responses to this phase of the consultation was limited. However any comments will now be considered prior to a final draft plan being prepared for public examination. Data Protection Policy With the General Data Protection Regulations 2016 (GDPR) coming into effect in May 2018 the Council has now adopted a Data Retention Policy to ensure compliance with the new regulations. The Council will hold a finance meeting to set the 201819 precept on the 23rd January at the New Hall from 7pm. The next general Council meeting is on Tuesday 13th February at 7pm. Your DMBC Councillors A busy start to the year with a number of issues concerning residents being addressed. Details of what we have been doing as well as useful information is provided below. Ongoing speeding problems in Austerfield are being addressed by enforcement operations by South Yorkshire Police and these same operations will continue to take place in Bawtry as well. 319 Bus from Austerfield and Bawtry to Doncaster Last year in my update I provided information about a new bus service that I had asked South Yorkshire Passenger Executive to provide at the request of a number of residents in Austerfield. This started last year but I wanted to ensure everyone is aware of it so it is well used and therefore keeps operating. The service is run by Doncaster Community Transport and is therefore one of the purple/blue Leger buses. The number 319 is displayed in the window and the bus operates on Monday and Wednesday. It leaves Austerfield at 830 outside the church, stops at Pilgrim Rise and every stop into Bawtry and then arrives at Wharfe street at 836 and then the Market Place and then onto Doncaster. It leaves the Interchange at 1435 and gets back into Austerfield at 1510. Unlike other buses, the 319 accepts your concessionary pass on this bus so you can catch it before the usual time of 930. Due to the bus being a community bus, it has seat belts and is accessible. I understand that people are waiting at the bus stop and not realising that they can use the 319 but it is for everyone whatever age. Any questions about it, do get in touch. Street Scene and Highways Operations – Service Standards - November 2017 Councillors have been sent the service standards for the Street Scene and Highways service; these are provided below. If you have a concern or complaint about any street scene or highways service please report it to DMBC either by phoning 736000 or DMBC on-line. Grass cutting We will cut the grass 13 times per year (between April and mid Nov) We will cut rural verges and sight lines 2 times per year (May to June, Aug to Sept) Street Lighting We will attend all reported Street Lighting faults within 7 working days Highways Maintenance We will repair highway and footpath defects; 2 hour response from time of identification (Cat 1 safety critical) Within 5 working days from the date of identification (Cat 1 high priority) Within 25 working days from the date of identification (Cat 2 medium priority) Planned programmed works (Cat 2 low) Gully Cleansing We will inspect and clean every road drain up to every 2 years Street Cleansing We will remove Fly-tipping within 7 days We will chemically treat all weed growth up to 3 times per year 52 BAWTRY TODAY

Bank closure Our next meeting will have been on 23 January where we will be planning our next steps. Responses received so far from regional Nat West are not encouraging and we are now contacting more senior personnel. Tickhill road and winter works It was good to see the weeds cleared on Tickhill Road and the trees crown lifted following my walk around the area with the Street Scene Team. Trees on South Parade (next to Bawtry Hall) are also being cleared and the area tidied ready for spring planting. With no grass cutting taking place throughout the winter, there is an opportunity for the street scene team to look at other areas to clear up so please do let me know if there are areas that you would like the team to clear up. Gainsborough Road Residents have been in touch about the ongoing speeding problems on Gainsbough Road. Following the improvements that have been made to Tickhill Road, I have asked Highways to look at similar improvements for all entrances to Bawtry. Further information will be provided in future updates. Station Road residents parking Residents have contacted me requesting parking permits for Station Road. The response that I received back from Highways was that the Mayor (Ros Jones) is reviewing all residents parking schemes and no new schemes will be looked at until this is completed.
