Welcome to the

EQUINOX PHYSIOTHERAPY

February 2017 edition

When you feel like quitting, think about why you started Author unknown Already Christmas seems like a distant memory, the decorations are back in the loft and with any luck the tree has been chopped up, popped in your green bin and taken away with your garden waste. I’d decided to be organised and remember to book a council collection of mine this year – only to find out that they weren’t doing them. Best laid plans! One month into the year, I wonder how many resolutions have already been given up on? Apparently most have been abandoned in little over a week, with ladies managing a few days longer than men! That is why I chose this month’s quote, after all, there must be a reason why New Year’s resolutions have been made and I guess how long we maintain the activity we have resolved to do, will depend on the strength of the reason for starting. Of course plans for change can be made at any time, so no reason why those abandoned resolutions, can’t be picked back up at any time. Sometimes easier said than done! The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th February. Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

method 1

Season the cavities of the fish and put a bay leaf inside each mackerel. Mix the onion and apples slices together and divide them between two sheets of buttered foil, adding the remaining bay leaves. Put the mackerel on top and dot the butter over the fish. Scrunch up the parcels from the sides and the ends, and then pour half of the cider over each fish before the final wrap up.

2 Put the foil parcels on a baking tray and bake in a preheated oven 190 degrees C, gas mark 5 for 20-25 minutes.

3 The apples and onions and cider will cook down to a sweet, fragrant mixture, which is delicious crushed with boiled waxy potatoes.

Relationship breakdowns The Christmas and New Year period can be a very stressful time for families, and sadly many relationships break down at this time of year. In some cases, a partner will wait until after the holidays before deciding to leave, or to inform the other party that they believe the relationship is over. If you find yourself in this situation, it is important to have clear, impartial legal advice at an early stage so you understand what options are available to you, and you can make the right decisions about what to do next.

If you are married, and divorce seems inevitable, your solicitor will be able to explain how the divorce process works, and give you an estimate of the costs involved. Most solicitors will offer a fixed fee for the divorce itself, and will be able to give you a good idea of what additional costs may arise in sorting out a financial settlement if this is needed. Wherever possible, responsible family solicitors will encourage the use of Family y Mediation as a way of resolving disputes over finances and cchildren, and court proceedings will be a last resort. In some limiited circumstances, such as where there has been domestic violence in the re elationship, legal aid may still be available for divorce proceedings and your solicitor will explain if you may be eligible for this. Of course if you are not married, but have been cohabiting with your partner when the relationship breaks down it is no less y up psetting and stressful. The law relating to co-habitees is very diffe erent from the law which applies to married couples, and again, it iss vital to have accurate legal advice as soon as possible. Many pe eople assume that if they have lived with their partner for a num mber of years they will have an automatic right to share assets and pensions, and this is not the case.

BUSY, BUSY, BAWTRY! Gong Hey Fat Choy as we welcome in the new Chinese New Year 2017 of the ‘Fire Rooster’. People born in the year of the Fire Rooster are considered to be very observant, hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented as well as being very confident in themselves. It may seem like you have only just finished buying gifts but another key date is looming – Valentine’s Day - the perfect occasion to show the one you love what they mean to you either in person or anonymously! Bawtry’s host of independent shops offer a great range of gifts from gorgeous underwear, jewellery and fashion treats from any of the myriad of boutiques in the town, or just treat them from a night off from cooking with dinner at one of our fantastic bars & restaurants. Plans are well underway for this year’s Bawtry Fashion Week which takes place between 7th and 11th March. Hot on the heels of New York, London, Milan and Paris our fifth Fashion Week will kick off with a stunning Joseph Ribkoff fashion show hosted by Yasmine of Bawtry on 7th March. As you will know Bawtry is home to some of the leading fashion labels and our fashion week is set to be packed with events, offers and opportunities to enjoy every aspect of fashion so be sure to keep your eyes open as more details are confirmed. Looking ahead to spring time we are also delighted to announce that our 2017 Visit Bawtry Race Meeting will take place on Saturday 29th April and will form part of a new event at the Racecourse – Ladies Evening. Pop the date in your diary – we’ll look forward to seeing you there. The initial three month trial is also now well underway offering FREE parking on Market Hill on Sunday’s and Bank Holidays and it is hoped that (subject to agreement between the Town Council and EPS) that this will become a permanent arrangement making Bawtry an even more attractive place to visit. As you can see we’ve got lots on as we all work together to make Bawtry even better and more brilliant. We look forward to your ongoing support and welcoming you to our businesses. Don’t forget that you can find out lots of information from our website www.visitbawtry.com, follow us on Twitter @visitbawtry and like us on Facebook /bawtryretailassociation

Community Hello and a Happy New Year from us all at Mayflower Sanctuary We have had an amazingly busy Christmas and all our kennels are full to overflowing. However the kennel assistants have worked really hard ensuring all of our residents both cats and dogs enjoyed everything Santa had brought for them. We have had an absolutely fantastic influx of presents, food, blankets, towels, toys, also biscuits and chocolates for the staff everything will make life so much easier for everyone. So a very big thank you to everyone that has contributed. You are all amazing people. When we are out and about collecting for the Sanctuary I often hear people say, we only give to people not to animals! I understand we all have an opinion and a choice which is good. However over the last year we have helped many people taking their beloved pets and re-homing them when they can no longer take care of them. It could be that people have to go into care or hospital or even move out of their homes or fall onto hard times. Even though it is very sad to have to give up your pet if you know it will be very much taken care of its something less to worry about. We like to think we are helping not only animals but people too.

This brings me on to one dog that we have with us at the moment called Roxanne she is a beautiful long coated Shepherd who is 7 years old and her owner is no longer able to take care of her. If you would like

Finding a forever home meet her please pop along and we will be happy to introduce her. We have some dogs and cats that have been with us quite some time. One such dog that I can think of is Dash who is a white Lurcher and very pretty, he has been with us 2 years. He is 3 years old a little nervous with strangers but once he is confident around you he would make a lovely pet. Also with us is a Malamute which is a very specialist breed, his name is Teddy and just 1 year old. If you are not familiar with this breed please take a look on the internet to find out more. We have a Race Night arranged for Sat the 11th Feb at Misson Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson. Tickets are £5 which includes pie and peas. There is a bar and the door open at 7pm Tickets are available from Sarah 01302 711285/07905017525 or Viv 01302711946 / 07971452248. Please come along and join us last time we had an event like this it was such fun and very successful. If you are looking for that special pet and would like any more details of our cats and dogs that are on the internet please pop along and take a look around our Sanctuary we will be happy to have a chat. Telephone 01302711330 for any further help you may require. Hope to see you soon Bye for now

Name: Lucy Female Sex: Date into care: FEB 2015 Age: 6 years Good with dogs: No Good with cats: No Good with children: Older Lucy came to Mayflower as her owner was getting unsteady on his feet and Lucy thought it was fun to weave around his legs !! She can be a feisty madam at times and likes to set the rules with regard to levels of fussing which she will tolerate. She loves to be stroked but doesn’t like her belly or tail to be touched. Lucy is NOT a lap-cat. If you look carefully you will notice that she is a polydactyl cat which means she has extra toes. This doesn’t hinder her in any way and she can do all the things that ‘normal’ toed cats can do. Lucy is just unique

Name: Mac & Morris Males Sex: Date into care: Mar 16 Age on arrival: 18 Months Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: Yes Mac & Morris are brothers who have found themselves looking for a new home due to a change in their owners circumstances. They used to live in a pub but when the Brewery moved their family to London they felt that it wouldn’t be safe for the boys and asked Mayflower to help them find a new home. They can be timid on first meeting but they are very loving once they get to know you. All they need is a little patience for their true personalities to come shining through. A home together is essential. (P.S - Morris has the white hairs on his chest !)

Compost Angst Home-made compost is a thing of wonder... when all goes well! But too often it goes horribly wrong and instead of rich, sweet, crumbly stuff we end up with a putrefying heap. For a long time I believed making great compost was beyond me. There are so many methods and myths, it all seemed too complicated. Well good news...it isn’t!

Compost containers You can make your own. It’s very easy DSSDUHQWO\ XVLQJ ROG À RRUERDUGV SRVWV DQG wire netting. Unfortunately I am to DIY what elephants are to hang gliding so I opt for ready made bins. Check with your council as many offer cheap bins to encourage recycling. If not, garden centres stock a good variety. Size matters! A container should be 3 ft / 1m square minimum, preferably larger. This allows heat to build up inside the heap which aids the decay process. Position it out of the main line of sight, behind a shed or some tall plants. Compost materials • Fruit and veg scraps • Coffee grounds and tea bags • 2OG À RZHUV DQG EHGGLQJ SODQWV • Garden clippings • Annual weeds • Crushed egg shells • Small animal bedding (e.g. rabbit) • Shredded cardboard, including tubes • Egg cartons • Lawn mowings

You can’t use: • Food waste (bread, meat etc.) • Cat and dog faeces • Evergreen leaves • Thick rooted perennial weeds How to make compost I’ve tried several methods, including my late grandfather’s which involved careful layers of various ingredients and sprinkling on lime at intervals. It worked, but I’m a lazy gardener really and can’t be bothered with all the faff. This my method, worked out through a combination of trial error (lots of error!) • Mix all material together so there is no concentration of any one sort • Firm it all down, • Moisten it • Cover it with some old carpet to keep heat in and prevent evaporation If you start the process now, by Autumn you’ll be digging in your very own wonderful compost, dragged from the bottom of your heap. You’ll have done your bit for recycling and best of all...it’s free! TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Bawtry Town Council - February 2017

Road safety in Bawtry

enforce.

Bawtry Town Council, Bawtry Residents Group, and our Ward Councillor Rachael Blake have been working together to try to improve road safety in Bawtry. Most of our concerns are about the speed limits, the high number of Heavy Goods Vehicles passing through the town, and the lack of pedestrian crossings. These matters are managed by DMBC, and therefore it has been with them that we have had to negotiate. The police are responsible for enforcing speed limits.

We have also expressed concern about the number of HGVs passing through the town, often at high speed. DMBC had advised that the completion of the new FARRRS road (Great Yorkshire Way) would result in fewer HGVs going through Bawtry – but our experience is the number has increased. DMBC has said there is little they can do. We are reserved about that – for instance, in co-operation with the Highways Authority, they could change signage on WKH $ WKDW GLUHFWV WUDÉ? F IRU WKH DLUSRUW through Bawtry.

There has been some progress - and that has been the new 20 mph safety zone on 6WDWLRQ 5RDG IRU 0D\Čľ RZHU 6FKRRO SOXV the associated extension of the 30 mph zone on Thorne Rd. DMBC were not keen, and this was achieved by everyone working together, including local residents, under the leadership of Rachael Blake. We also asked DMBC to reduce the speed limit on Doncaster Road, coming into Bawtry, from 40 mph to 30 mph. We pointed out that this stretch of road has houses on both sides, a children’s’ nursery, and elderly persons’ accommodation. We said that 40 mph was too fast, that many drivers exceeded the limit anyway, and that there was no pedestrian crossing. We were concerned it was “an accident waiting to happenâ€?. DMBC agreed to review the speed OLPLW DQG WKH\ FRQGXFWHG D WUDÉ? F VSHHG survey in October 2016. They have now informed us that, in light of their review, there is no case to reduce the speed limit. They state that the majority of drivers observe the 40 limit, and that the safety record of the stretch of road gives no cause for concern. They also state that the police would not support a reduction, with a concern that a lower limit would be hard to 40 BAWTRY TODAY

Given our concerns about speed and HGVs, pedestrian crossings on the main roads into the town would help. DMBC has responded by saying their cost cannot be MXVWLČ´ HG The Station Road success shows DMBC will respond positively if enough pressure is placed upon them. At present, they do not appear to accept that the concerns expressed by the Town Council, the Residents Group and the Ward Councillor are really representative of the views of the people of Bawtry. Are we mistaken? Are we exaggerating these concerns? Are residents content with road safety in Bawtry? Or do you agree that our roads need to be safer? If you do, it would seem that the PRVW HÎ? HFWLYH ZD\ RI SHUVXDGLQJ '0%& is for each individual to tell them that. You can ring their general number – 736000 – or, better, email their Road Safety Team at WUDÉ? F#GRQFDVWHU JRY XN You can also sign the petition created by Bawtry Residents Group, available in the Library and local shops. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Highways concerns, traffic regulation orders and street lighting are just of the few areaas that I have been busy with over the last month – details are provided below. The Heritage and d Trivia Quiz which I mentioned in my last update was a great evening at Phoenix Theatre and was very well attended. Thanks to all the volunteers who organised the evening, with pie and peas, and different rounds of questions asked by Margaret and Tony kept us all thinking throughout the night. Congratulations to the winning team – further details about our continuing work to highlight the rich heritage of Bawtry and Austerfield are provided below. Improvements to the footpaths on Doncaster Road In my January update, I explained about the work that I had asked Doncaster Council’s Street Scene to undertake as part of their winter works programme. One of the areas was the footpaths on Doncaster Road and the encroachment that was occurring which was leading to narrowing of the footpaths. I was really pleased to see the work completed in early January as well as tidying up of hedges. If there are similar areas that you think would benefit from similar work, please do let me know. Traffic Regulation Order Update for Station Road I met with Doncaster Council’s Highways Officer to progress the improvements that were needed to keep our children attending the school safer. An improved scheme was agreed and I am waiting to hear when the works will be completed. Street Lighting on Green Park Due to LED lighting now being used a resident complained that the lighting on Green Park was not as good with the previous lighting. I have noticed the difference myself, particularly in the early mornings. I contacted Street Lighting who explained that the design complied with regulations but the Lighting Manager came to look at the problem for himself, and agreed with us that some street were particularly dark and has agreed to ask the designers to re-look again at the lighting.

DMBC Councillor

from Highways Officers, informing me about the outcome of the survey that had been undertaken recently. To cut a long email short, they maintained that the correct speed p for Doncaster Road is 40mph and that the islands in the road allow residents to cross safely. This was despite the number of problems the lollipop man has, the complaints from residents about speeding cars and the views of parents that don’t feel able to let their children cross the road safely due to both the speed that cars and lorries are travelling and the volume of traffic. Please see further information from Bawtry Town Council about this ( in this Bawtry Today) and what you can do if you don’t agree with the outcome of the survey. I have a meeting with BTC and Ros Jones, DMBC Mayor in the middle of January to talk about this and other concerns that we all share that need to be addressed in the next few months. Heritage Update We are continuing to meet to plan a heritage event for 2017. We have lots of ideas and are going to be submitting a Heritage Lottery application in the next few weeks for improvements that we would like to see happen this year. We would welcome interested residents and businesses being involved – please contact me for further details. Surgery I will be holding my monthly surgery on the same morning as the Bawtry Library coffee morning on: Friday 10 February from 10-12 at Bawtry Community Library. Please don’t wait for my surgery though –I am happy to meet you at a convenient time for you including evenings and weekends, and if I can help with any council (including housing) issues please contact me on: Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael. blake@doncaster.gov.uk
