I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always, I planned to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, like all the best laid plans, as I write this with just 10 days left to go, I have 5 magazines to finish, cards to write, shopping still to do, not forgetting 2 bedrooms mid-way through being decorated. But at least I’ve not moved house this December, last year was the last time I will do that in December! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation. The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th January. 2018 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. Wishing you a Peaceful 2018. Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Learn to love your living space Whether this is the living room, lounge or sitting room whatever you call it, sometimes our living space can be underappreciated or overused and in need of some TLC and this week, I have three great design ideas that can bring a fresh new look to your living room. Inject a burst of colour With the winter months during in this is the perfect time to inject your home with a pop of colour. Giving even just one wall a lick of paint will instantly brighten up the entire room.

Introducing different textiles and materials Updating some of your home accessories with different textiles and materials can really add some depth and chic to your living space and give your room a completely new feel. 7U\ XSGDWLQJ D OLJKW ¿ WWLQJ RU DGGLQJ VRPH VWRUDJH baskets that are not only practical storage solution but can also be a stylish feature within your room too. Interior trend: Key statement pieces to watch out for this season includes woven textiles such as wicker or bamboo alongside marble and copper accessories.

Love those soft furnishings Bringing in new soft furnishings is an easy way to update your living space. Top tip: If your cushions are recent just change the cushion covers there is no need to spend extra money when it’s not required and also you can swap them back again when you fancy a change. Or why not try adding an elaborate trim to an existing cushion cover. You don’t need to be an excellent sewer to do this just follow these two easy steps. 1. Remove the pad from the cushion cover and pin your chosen braiding around the top edge of the cover. 2. For the corners, neatly fold the braiding at 90 degrees to create a right angle and pin into place. Then it’s just a case of hand stitching all the way around with a contrasting thread. To Everyone A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR. 2017 was very hard on our finance department. Lots of our resident dogs needed very expensive surgery, but luckily all came through well and some have now arrived in their forever homes, they have been given that special new start that they deserve. Our Vets bill for the year was over £55,000 so this money has to come from somewhere, we rely heavily on the generosity of the local people in the area and we will not survive without you. We receive no government funding therefore we must make the most of all fundraising events throughout the year. Unfortunately, the £20,000 funding that we have received for many years from Blue Cross has ended this year so we will struggle to stay afloat without your help. All fundraisers work so hard thinking up new ideas to raise money, however we badly need your support to make all our fundraising successful. We will be holding a May Ball at the Crown Hotel on the 18th May so please save the date, it promises to be a fabulous evening and we hope you will be there to support us. We will also be having our usual Dog Walk and Dog Show during the year, so watch this space for dates.

Finding a forever home

Thank you to everyone that helped make our resident dogs and cats happy on Christmas day with lots of shoe boxes filled with toys and treats. Also thank you’ s to everyone involved in loving and caring for the dogs and cats in their care here, particularly over the Christmas period. Also, volunteers taking time out of their hectic family Christmas to walk our dogs at the Sanctuary over the festive period. You are all stars. We have re-homed over 500 dogs and 250 cats throughout 2017 which has to be a fantastic achievement. If you are looking for that special pet to share your life please come to see us we will be happy to have a chat and point you in the right direction. Don’t forget we have a shop area in our reception so call and have a coffee and a look around there’s lots to see. Our opening hours are 2-4 Monday-Friday. Closed Tuesday. Sat-Sun 1-4

Name: Ben Male Sex: Age: 6 years Came into care: Sept 2017 Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: ? Good with children: Older I was adopted from Mayflower as a kitten and have spent the last 5 ½ years living in a very happy home with my Mum. Unfortunately she has been unwell lately and feels unable to care for me properly any more so here I am to look for a new home. I am a loving little chap but can be a little feisty at times so any children should be older. I have also been used to going outside so my new home must be in a quiet area or have a secure garden for me to explore. Don’t pass me by – ask to meet me.

She is very gentle and playful and loves to go for walks. She has proven, once over her shyness, to be very trainable. Due to her shyness she will need a quieter home. What could be better than taking a walk on a crisp Sunday morning? Just the thing to get the mind, body and soul back in order after the Christmas indulgence. The Group meet in the Chapelgate Car Park usually for a 9.30 am departure, car sharing is always encouraged with a voluntary contribution to be made to the driver. We start on the 7th January with a moderate paced 8½ miles in the Sutton and Lound area. On the 14th January we will be walking with dinosaurs, well maybe not, on an 8 mile ramble which will end with a stroll through the gorge at Creswell Crags. What do we ‘do’?! A patient of mine recently enquired as to whether or not we ‘do’ fingers. He knew we ‘did’ backs and sports injuries but wasn’t sure about fingers! So, what exactly do we ‘do’?! Basically physiotherapists treat any part of the body that is causing a problem…it could be painful, stiff, tingly, sore, weak… It can make more sense to think of Physiotherapists as Human Engineers. The human body is one large machine which may, for a variety of reasons, develop a dysfunctional part or parts which in turn (especially if left for long enough) may have a knock on effect creating problems/stress elsewhere in the system. It’s the job of the Physiotherapist to ascertain where the fault lies, why it occurred in the first place, what needs to be done to remedy the situation and what needs to change to prevent the problem recurring. One of the many things I love about my work is the variety so thankfully I can say “Yes, we ‘do’ fingers!” and over the past few weeks I’ve also seen patients with; • an arthritic knee • a stiff neck after a car accident • a painful foot causing problems with acrobatic tumbling • a sore hip causing problems getting comfy in bed • a tingly arm • low back pain for the first time • low back pain for many years • headaches • a painful knee after running with a poor movement pattern So, if you feel that part of your body is not moving properly, is causing uncomfortable symptoms of one description or another or is limiting how you use your body then Physiotherapy could benefit you.

Could yoga help you improve your health in 2018? For many, the end of one year and start of the next, is a time for reflection and aspiration. We look back at what we’ve done and think about what we’d like to do or achieve for the New Year. The truth is, however, no matter what any of us want to do – we need our health to be able to enjoy life to the full. My Mum used to say, you can have all the money in the world, but without your health you have nothing. She was a wise lady!

Shona Garner is a fully qualified, experienced teacher, running regular classes, and 6 week programmes (for beginners; for healthy back and core, and for stress) in the Tickhill, Cantley and Bawtry areas. If you’d like information about any of these courses then contact Shona on shona@yogaover45.co.uk or Tel: 07904 262877, or visit: www.yogaover45.co.uk

As a yoga teacher with a special interest in teaching students in mid-life or later years, I find many of my students have niggling pains or conditions which, if neglected, would hinder their plans and prevent them from living life to the full. Getting older does not automatically have to come with getting sicker. Yoga can help you improve your strength, flexibility and your general well-being and, unlike many forms of exercise, is accessible to just about anyone – regardless of age or physical health. From gentle stretches to movements which help strengthen your muscles, improve your posture and relieve the stress or tension so many of us can experience in day to day life, learning and practising yoga might be one of the most beneficial things you could do for yourself in 2018. Whether you make New Year resolutions or not, you have plans; things you love to do; people you want to spend time with – and the last thing you need is your health to prevent you from doing those things. Maybe giving yoga is worth a try? And the beauty of yoga is, once you learn some basics, you need no special equipment – and you can practise easily at home: honestly, a few minutes a day can make a significant difference to your health and general well-being. So, search out a class you feel might be suitable for you – try more than one teacher or style – sometimes it takes time to find the teacher who is the right “fit” for you – but it’s worth looking! And know that you could be on the way to forming a new habit which can massively change your health for the better!

The Hub - Retford

Following Carol Easton’s exciting solo exhibition over the Christmas period, January sees the opening of a Group Exhibition at The Hub in Retford. Westhill Art Group Over 60’s was formed about ten years ago by local self- taught artist, Norma Spurdens, as a leisure activity for retired people in the Ordsall area. The group, which is now organised by another local artist, Pat Ward, meets at Westhill Community Centre every Tuesday afternoon. There is no set agenda, each member being free to choose their own subject and media. This results in an interesting mix of styles and ideas. The exhibition (free) runs from 13 January until 24 February 2018, and you are all welcome to attend. In addition, you will be able to look at all the crafts and local products on sale, and enjoy FRÎ? HH WHD DQG D FDNH 3OHDVH GR FRPH DORQJ TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

15 Great Reasons to Start Dressmaking

Doncaster Rambler’s: The Dambusters March

I have been dressmaking for over 25 years. The reason I started when I was 14 was that I love fashion and dressing to impress. Since I have been teaching dressmaking I have come across lots of other great reasons for starting to make your own clothes or clothes for your family. 1. 3. 4. 5. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14.

I don’t like shopping Ζ FDQȇW ȴ QG DQ\WKLQJ WR ȴ W LQ WKH VKRSV I just love fabric I want to save money I want to start a clothing business Ζ ȇYH UHWLUHG DQG Ζ ȴ QDOO\ KDYH time to do this just for me Sewing is great therapy I don’t like kids’ clothes in the shops I want to make clothes for my children/grandchildren I worry about the ethics of high street clothing I wanted a new hobby I loved sewing at school and wanted to try it again Sewing keeps my hands busy so I can’t smoke/eat junk food The quality of shop bought clothes is shocking! I could do better.

Almost 30 of us gathered at various points along the west bank of Ladybower Reservoir. After reading the information boards at The Upper Derwent Dam (of “Dambustersâ€? fame) we were soon heading steeply uphill onto Howden Moor and were pleased to VKHOWHU IURP WKH ZLQG IRU RXU FRÎ? HH EUHDN in what could well have been a bomb FUDWHU :H ZHUH VRRQ XS DQG RÎ? DJDLQ making our way more gently uphill onto Derwent Moor before a gentle descent to the Ladybower Inn for a lunch stop. Our shorter return visit took us over the road bridge and up again onto Crook Hill before descending through the coniferous woodland back to our cars.

Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM COUNCILLORS RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER As we look forward to 2018 and a quieter year with no local elections it’s a good time to reflect on some of the progress that we have made in the last year and to talk about some of the work we are going to do in 2018. We hope you find our update useful and we look forward to working on your behalf throughout 2018 and making Bawtry and Austerfield an even better place to live for residents of all ages. It’s been a busy year with progress being made on a number of ongoing issues including in Austerfield the 30mph signs being extended and the Mayflower ship returning to its rightful place on the roundabout. Months if not years of requesting junction protection at both Pemberton and Top Street finally came to fruition with the yellow lines being put down in October and lining on the roads was completed making our roads safer. Improvements were made to hedges and footpaths, flower beds were improved and the much awaited community sports pavilion opened in time for the annual sports day in the summer. Our community assets continue to flourish providing welcome services and support throughout the area including community groups, Phoenix Theatre and the Community Library. Our newest purpose built dwellings for mature residents – McCarthy and Stone began to be constructed with completion expected early in 2018. The year came to a close with a 1st for Doncaster with Bawtry and Austerfield hosting Doncaster’s first Illuminate Celebrations, with services at both Austerfield and Bawtry, a walk from Austerfield to Bawtry and around Bawtry, a light projection on the Crown Hotel and an evening drinks reception at the Crown with a range of speakers. Hundreds of residents of all ages took part and gathered in the courtyard to create an illuminated 400 marking the celebrations that will take place in 2020 with the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers. The event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of many volunteers in both Bawtry and Austerfield who gave their time freely to make the event such a success.

and visitors. Unfortunately, they year ended with the news that Nat West planned to close the bank on 30 May. Groups responded in the way that they have worked all year with a meeting arranged by ourselves and the Town Council, Residents Group, Retailers Association and community groups where we will work together to organise how we continue to provide a banking facility for the Town. Further details will be provided in our next update. Plans for 2018 We will be looking at different ways of working in 2018 to ensure that we have contact with as many residents as possible so we can tackle even more issues that are of concern to residents. We will be having regular walk abouts which residents are welcome to join us on; having surgeries at different times and locations and using social media more to keep you informed of developments in the town and to let you know about the work we are doing. Helping ourselves – and others – in 2018 January is often associated with “New Year Resolutions. I don’t like making them (as they don’t last). However maybe, like me, you like to use the start of the year to ‘take stock’. Some things that I am going to focus on in 2018 include reducing my use of plastics and maintaining a daily exercise routine. These are personal goals but, I believe, they demonstrate respect for God’s creation and have a wider impact on society. The devastating results of non-biodegradable, throwaway plastic is frequently reported – especially through David Attenborough’s campaigning. More action needs to be taken. Some of us are old enough to remember paying deposits for glass bottles! The Scottish Government are considering plans to introduce deposits for plastic bottles. Coca Cola, which produces over 110 billion singleuse plastic bottles each year, supports the suggestion.

We each have a responsibility towards God’s world. In Psalm 24, David said: “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. We only have one world and we need to care for it.

inactivity could be killing twice as many people as obesity. NHS research has shown that in RYHU RQH LQ Č´ YH FKLOGUHQ LQ 5HFHSWLRQ and over one in three children in Year 6 were measured as obese or overweight. There is a ‘health epidemic’ – a crisis for our country. In 2016 the NHS launched a “Healthy New Townsâ€? programme. Ten housing areas were chosen for schemes to put good health at the heart of urban design and planning. The aim is to reduce pressure on the NHS by encouraging a rethinking of lifestyles. Part of one innovative winning entry, planned for Halton in Cheshire, includes building an urban obstacle course (with an app giving users discounts at local stores); providing a nursery where children run their own farm; and supplying free bikes for residents. We have a responsibility towards ourselves. The Bible tells us that we are made in God’s image. And the apostle Paul reminds us: â€œâ€Ś WKDW >RXU@ ERG\ LV WKH WHPSOH RI WKH +RO\ 6SLULW Č? Especially after over-indulgence at Christmas, we may need to take more regular exercise. But this is more than a seasonal problem. It is reported that a quarter of British adults walk less than nine minutes a day; while a Cambridge University study showed that 56 BAWTRY TODAY

2017 was another great year with a series of successful events bringing droves of visitors into the town. As tradition dictates, the year concluded with an amazing Christmas event and the unveiling of, the now very famous, Womack’s window!
