to the July edition of W elcome BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY

I hope that you all enjoyed the various Jubilee celebrations. I was away on a family holiday in Suffolk so didn’t mange to attend anything locally, but I did enjoy the Southwold firework display, beacon lighting and Jubilee Fete! The abundance of flags and bunting everywhere I went also added to the holiday feeling and the general celebratory air. I hope that the weather not being particularly kind didn’t detract from your events. The next edition will be distributed to you from 27th July. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Wednesday 11th July.

Best Wishes, Paula

Pastor’s Page Summer 2012 During the course of a week the BBC and ITV screen a couple of dozen of quiz shows – opportunities to show off your specialist knowledge, general knowledge or accumulation of trivia and in return perhaps win “the coveted trophy” and/ or a tidy sum of money. When I went to an audition to appear on one of these quizzes a couple of years ago we were told that this sort of programme is inundated with applications from men in their forties (ie people like me) and that younger men and women are always encouraged to apply. It is true; I do love a quiz and my dormant competitive side comes well and truly awake when challenged to name the currencies of Africa, the Oscar winners of the 80’s or the hits of Genesis; much to my wife’s embarrassment. Of course, it’s just a bit of fun and an opportunity to show off a little as well as learn something new, normally something trivial I admit. Some languages have two verbs for our one, “to know” and we Christians sometimes get confused as to which one we mean when talking about God. The Bible does not so much challenge us to know things about God as offers us the chance to know Him personally. Yes, whenever a Bible knowledge round comes up in a pub quiz I do pretty well, but it is only through prayer, obeying the Bible’s teaching and in travelling the journey with other Christians can I grow in my knowledge of God, rather than my being able to name the books of the Bible or the sons of Isaac. On Saturday 7 July our church (at 7:30pm, Bawtry New Hall) is offering the chance for any and everyone to show off their knowledge of sport as we host a professionally produced 6 round multi-media Olympic-based quiz, together with a choice of curries and a short (9 minute) explanation of Christianity. So if you fancy yourself as a bit of a sports expert, enjoy a good curry or would appreciate a non-churchy talk about the Christian faith , then please come along and help make it a fun evening. There is no charge and you certainly don’t have to be a middle-aged man. You never know, you might walk away with “the coveted trophy”.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary My name is Buster and I arrived at the kennels after walking the streets all alone with no one to care for me. I have settled really well into life here at the kennels and I am told I have no behavioural problems at all I am not destructive and try to behave myself. I love going for walks and I am told I walk really well on a lead, however I do get a bit excited and I am told I can be a little strong in my eagerness to get to anything I don't understand. My basic training is very good, but my carer said I may need a little refresher course on a couple of commands, so it looks like I may have to go back to school at some point. But I am quite clever so I am sure I wont need many lessons !! I do get along with most dogs although I do prefer the lady dogs. I love having my carers spend time with me and will play for as long as they have the time Even though I am such a good boy I am still waiting for my forever loving home. I see my other doggy friends come and go but I am still waiting. Can you help me and give me a second chance ? If you can give Buster a home or if you would like to come along to the Sanctuary and find out more please call 01302711330

Visit your local open spaces and get the bug for bugs! Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust own and manage the Idle Valley Nature Reserve just off North Road, (A638), Retford. The Visitor Reception is open 7 days a week, 10am to 4pm where staff and volunteers are ready to give a warm welcome and help you make the most of your visit. Conservation and protecting wildlife for the future isn’t just confined to reserves though – when did you last take a walk along the river or the canal? When did you last walk the public rights of way in your village or sit and ponder in your local park, meadow or churchyard? These places are usually teeming with wildlife so take time out to look a little closer and a little deeper, or come th to our ‘Bug Day’, Sat 14 July 2 till 4pm so you know what Peacock Butterfly – a pretty bug you’re looking at! Call 01777 713945 to book your place. July is a good month for ‘stoat spotting’, the young are just old enough now to fend for themselves and are also brave enough to have lots of rough and tumble with their siblings. They are enchanting and comical to watch and they seem to have inexhaustible energy, but at the end of the day it is simply survival training; their agility and speed is what makes them such excellent predators and helps them survive the winter. Stoats have a distinctive black spot at the end of their tail and love nooks and crannies, hedge bottoms, dry stone walls and country roads with wide verges. Good luck with your spotting. Please remember that if you need advice for your community conservation project, you only have to call us on 01777 713945 or pop in at the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre between 10am and 4pm. We look forward to meeting you. Go fundriasing with Go Walkies and get involved in our sponsored dog walk taking place at Idle Valley Nature Reserve, Retford on Sunday 8th July. This beautiful reserve includes the 300 hectare nationally designated Sutton and Lound Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) – one of the largest in the county. It is also home to a diverse range of wildlife and is recognised as one of the richest birding sites in the region. The walk will last around 45 minutes to one hour and takes you around one of the lakes via the many footpaths and bridleways. It is suited to people of all ages and abilities and dogs of all shapes and sizes. Taking part is free and there is no minimum fundraising target. All we ask is that you and your pooch raise as much for Guide Dogs as you can. This money will go towards a variety of things from dog leads to dog kennels, helping Guide Dogs to continue providing an invaluable service to blind and partially sighted people throughout the UK. You don’t even need to own a dog to take part. You could take a dog owned by a friend, neighbour or local rescue kennel. We will reward you and your four-legged friend with a certificate, a Go Walkies dog tag and a Eukanuba goody bag. Plus there will be the chance to enter a free prize draw to win a six months supply of Eukanuba dog food! Please visit www.gowalkies.org.uk or call 0845 600 6787 for more information and details on how to register for this event. Alternatively, come along to support us on the day. You can discover more of what Idle Valley has to offer at www.nottinghamshirewildlife.org/nature-reserves/idle-valley 26 | BAWTRY TODAY

Bawtry Town Council Newsletter July 2012

www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk Jubilee Celebration The BARS (Bawtry Action for Recreation & Sport) Jubilee Sports Day was very well attended and with lots of variety in stalls and entertainment. Congratulations to the organisers. For those who are not aware what the council did in connection with the Jubilee Celebrations, The Town Mayor presented Jubilee Medals to the pupils of Bawtry Mayflower School on the last dayof term at a total cost in excess of £850. The pupils were very surprised and pleased. Bawtry Churches Together hosted a ‘Celebrate Bawtry’ service on the Bank Holiday Sunday at the New Hall and also Big Lunches around the area afterwards. The weather held out for the Sports Day but regrettably not for the Big Lunches. Licensing Extensions of liquor licences are currently being dealt with by DMBC Licensing Committee, which affect Bawtry to which the Town Council are raising objections and concerns. One application has already been granted up to 02.00 along with other variations such as dancing etc., These changes are not apparent, as Town and Parish Councils are not Statutory Consultees, and a ‘blue’ (Major) changes notice in a premise window does not highlight the changes being applied for either. In the centre of Bawtry at a rough calculation, there are approximately 23 premises with a liquor licence of some description and premises applying for licences is fast becoming the norm. The Town Council and some of the business fraternity agree that saturation point has been reached and wish to avoid long term businesses falling foul of this. The Town Council is also concerned at the effect of late night licences on local residents. Efforts will continue to be made to try and change the Borough’s licensing procedures to give a greater voice to Bawtry residents. Highway Issues Parking on footpaths and on double yellow lines is becoming a problem, which DMBC will be addressing One of the problem areas is the slip road near the Methodist church, with vehicles parking part on the pavement part on the road, causing access problems to pedestrians. Damaged street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating, etc.) should be reported to DMBC for action. Please remember that a direct line to DMBC at Bawtry Community Library is still available for you personally to report any matters that concern you to DMBC, the highway authority or by telephoning Doncaster Council on 736000. Airport & Tunnel Tech Complaints Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so that the complaints can be logged by the appropriate authority. The new contact email for Tunnel Tech complaints is: Amy.Ogden@bassetlaw.gov.uk It is very important that residents lodge their complaints, so that accurate records may be kept by the authorities concerned for possible future use. With regard to Tunnel Tech’s operations, new Permit conditions have been imposed by Bassetlaw District Council (whether they will rigidly take action on any breach of the permit is another matter). Details of the new Permit can 40 | BAWTRY TODAY

be found on Bassetlaw District Council’s web page. We thank those residents who continually report odour problems caused by the processes used at Tunnel Tech. Youth Club Discussion is taking place with DMBC regarding the intermittent operation and changes taking place at the youth club without discussion and consultation with local people. We are assured that the Youth Club will operate on a fortnightly basis, from the Methodist Church Hall but it is also being requested that to aid operation of the facility, suitable volunteers from the community be asked to assist. If you feel you can offer some of your time in this worthwhile venture, then please initially contact George Spencer on 01302 711464 – two hours on a Friday once a fortnight is the commitment required. Condolences Before the commencement of business at the last meeting, a minute’s silence was held in memory of Mick Vallow, who died recently. Mick was a regular attender over a considerable number of years, as a member of the public at council meetings. Our sympathy and thoughts go to his wife and family.
