Welcome to
"I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June." - L. M. Montgomery
June magazine already – Where is this year disappearing to? In my last introduction I mentioned hoping to read a few books while enjoying some Easter sunshine. I did indeed manage to polish off 7 books, while enjoying a family break in Lanzarote. Only 3 from my ‘to read’ list – the others just ones that other people had left behind on the book swap shelf that I liked the look of! June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family fun days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only are they fun events, but also valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. The July issues will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th June. Please keep a close eye on closing dates if you would like to include things over the coming months, they can sometimes fall earlier than people expect and we are often working to very tight timescales to meet print deadlines. I hate it when I have to tell people they are too late to promote their events!
Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine!

community The sun is at last starting to peep through as we head towards June but we could still do without the wet days that make life so difficult when you are cleaning pens and trying to keep dogs dry.
Finding a forever home
We are taking care of about 13 puppies at the moment various breeds and sizes and as all puppies are beautiful. I have fallen in love with a little one called Cher who was borne at the sanctuary along with her brother Sonny. They are both adorable and if my lifestyle was different I would be taking her home to join my 2 grown up girls and 3 cats. However I know there will be someone out there with more time on their hands to dedicate to all of our puppies including Cher. So if you have the time and energy to cope with a puppy please come and see us. Likewise we have some lovely dogs and cats waiting for their chance to shine with owners that can give these animals a second chance. Including Susie who is a little Jack Russell with 3 legs. She is very loving and is just getting used to her disability .
June and our Black tie Ball at Mount Pleasant on 20 June. Also don’t forget the annual Scrufts dog show on the 6th July at Tithes Lane in Tickhill If you would like more information about any fund raising events please call us.

Preparations are well advanced and several participants have already started their training to be in top form for all the sports on offer. There has been a record entry for the six-a-side football Competition for the Bawtry Jubilee Cup organised by Bawtry Town Football Clubs and Jonathan James. Anyone who wishes to enter a team should make early contact with Peter Burton on 07940029685. Budding cricketers can turn up on the day and take part in the Last Man Standing competition organised by Bawtry Cricket Club. There will be several children’s races with prizes for all and medals for the winners, as well as the Welly Throwing which is always keenly contested and a coconut shy. In addition this year there will be professional tennis coaching for boys and girls organised by Wheatley Tennis Club and anyone can turn up and take part. Equipment will be provided. There will also be the usual stalls selling cakes, crafts and a barbecue and refreshments and a bumper raffle courtesy of the generosity of the Bawtry businesses. Entertainment throughout the day will be provided by the Doncaster Concert Band playing music to suit all tastes and an exhibition of dance by pupils of The Dance Studio of Bawtry. To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War and the 70th Anniversary of D-Day it is hoped to release 100 balloons to commemorate those events and remember local men who gave their lives in both wars. Those attending Sports Day will have the opportunity to release a balloon in memory of relatives who gave their lives and all proceeds will go to the British Legion. There will be something for everyone young or old at Sports Day. There is no entrance fee, just turn up and enjoy the day.

Her forms are precise and considered and the glaze is surprising with its rich blue and green hues. Each year Ted exhibits a new body of work which varies from a series of landscapes to abstract work. He has a great interest in colour and a unique vision. This is an open studio event that is very well worth a visit…you will receive a warm welcome, delicious refreshments and will see Ted’s paintings and Jane’s saltglaze ceramic wear, and you will be able to purchase very usable pots. Work out at Work
Workout at Work Day (#workoutatwork) is on Friday 6th June. This annual awareness day promoted by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) enables Physiotherapists to highlight the benefits of healthier work habits and increase levels of physical activity. Poor work habits include sitting for long periods, repetitive tasks, missing breaks and prolonged periods on electronic devices. This can increase the risk of developing aches and pains (musculoskeletal disorders) as well as contributing to stress, depression and anxiety. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimate the majority of days off sick are as a result of these sorts of problems and cost employers 10.4 million working days in 2012. As experts in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, Physiotherapists can facilitate patients’ recovery as well as help prevent injury and ill health in the first place. Active staff could mean reduced sickness rates, fewer compensation claims and reduced expenditure on temporary staff. Other likely benefits include increased employee satisfaction, better productivity and improved retention. The Work Foundation reports that for every £1 invested in wellbeing initiatives, businesses get a return of £3. Working out at work can mean active travel to and from work, desk based exercises or may involve a workplace walking club or lunchtime activity. Work station assessments and ensuring breaks are taken can prevent problems building up. Access to health information can make a difference and the CSP’s advice leaflets can be downloaded for free ( www.csp.org.uk) For information on how Blizard Physiotherapy are supporting Work Out @ Work Day visit www.blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk

Planes, Trains and Bikes to Berlin by Lee Jackson – Bliss Travel There can be no more appropriate a travel game for a visit to Berlin than eye-spy, especially for a visitor of my age with many memories of the Cold War. As we arrive in Hauptbahnhof station after a very comfortable rail journey from London we look for something beginning with “B” and the list is endless, Bear, Brecht, Brandenburg, Bauhaus, Bowie but top of our own list, and not an obvious choice, is the word “Bicycle”, more easily associated with Amsterdam but as we will find out a common feature of modern Berlin. Following a superb journey through the German countryside, via Brussels and Cologne, and in the first class comfort of Eurostar and then German Railways, we arrive both relaxed and excited about our break to Berlin. Our enthusiasm to visit Berlin by rail had been hugely rewarded with sumptuous comfort on the Eurostar train and an easy connection in Cologne. At the centre of our visit is a 5 hour guided bike tour where we will get an insider’s guide to the city under our own steam in the warm spring sunshine. Berlin is easily and superbly covered through its rail and tram system. At the same time many of the popular visitor attractions, especially those of the former Eastern side of the wall are easily covered on foot. On arrival we make a quick stop at the Berlin Info Store in the station to obtain a group pass for the transport system, which at 18 Euro for the three of us is fantastic value and includes our journey to Schonefeld airport for the flight home. After our rail journey we welcome the opportunity to walk and follow the river Spree by the Reichstag and the new German Parliament buildings and on to our hotel on Fredreichstrasse. Almost immediately we spot groups of people making their way around the city on organised bike sightseeing tours and I feel more relaxed about my children’s ability to negotiate the Berlin traffic! Our hotel base is very well located right by Fredreichstrasse station, conveniently close for the central sights and with immediate S-Bahn and U-bahn rail connections. The Eurostars hotel is 20

modern, clean and comfortable with an indoor pool that may bring a welcome relief in the heat of summer but holds no such draw with so much in the city to discover this time around. Having dumped our bags it is just a 10 minute walk down Fredreichstrasse to reach the former control point between East and West Berlin famously known as “Checkpoint Charlie”. Little remains of the actual crossing point, only the wooden guard hut from the US Sector remains, and alongside it actors dressed in US military uniforms to make the most of the tourist desire for a photo opportunity. However, alongside the former checkpoint is a museum that records the history of the divided city and includes amazing examples of escape attempts by those trapped in the East. The relics, including a specially made welding unit constructed to hold a person, an adapted VW petrol tank that carried many escapees to the west and a zip wire harness that was used successfully by a family in the dead of night. We spend almost two hours looking through the information and exhibits and could easily spend more time there given the extent of the material. Instead, with the evening approaching we decide to walk to Potsdammer Platz as a likely venue for dinner. The area had stood barren for many years before being developed under the umbrella of the unified city were German property developers and architects have turned the area into a futuristic entertainment hub. After a few photographs of the imposing architecture we notice a hive of activity in the Sony centre and walk in on the German premier of the new Spiderman movie but elect to stay clear of the crowds and exit in search of dinner.

Misson & Springs WI One of the original aims of the WI movement was to educate women and we certainly learnt a great deal from our meeting on Wednesday 30th April. Angela Axelby gave an excellent talk and demonstration on making soya wax candles in china teacups. Her enthusiasm was contagious as she showed us some of the beautiful vintage and retro teacups, jugs and even mini casserole dishes which she had sourced for her candles. We discovered the difference between petroleum wax and soya wax and now appreciate the many benefits of using the latter, which is entirely natural and infinitely renewable, as well as being easy to wash off with ordinary soap and water if it accidentally spilled. Angela had brought many of her cups to show us and displayed them most attractively, cheering up a very wet evening. Her presentation was excellent, with poems and activities to include us all and we especially enjoyed trying to guess the scent of the samples she passed around, and blindfolded volunteers picking a colour to go with an unidentified smell. I think my favourite was baby talcum powder in a candle which was beautifully presented in a Peter Rabbit mug. Our meeting on Wednesday 28th May will be our AGM, followed by a members’ evening of a quiz and our firm favourite Beetle Drive – don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! On Wednesday 25th June, we are anticipating a very interesting evening with Barbara Meyer talking about wildlife conservation, especially of the Amur leopard and Siberian tiger. Those of us who visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park regularly are particularly looking forward to this meeting. We look forward to your joining us, either as a member for the whole year or as a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T

EVERTON VILLAGE PLAYERS
“IT’S ON IT’S OFF!” Local Sheffield playwright Ray Lawrence brings his fabulous comedy “It’s On - It’s Off” to the area this week. This brilliant comedy will be performed by Everton Village Players and the Director, Barry Nicholls, is particularly proud, because Ray was one of his Creative Writing students on his Abbeydale Writers course. When he read the script, Barry knew he would love to direct it, and Everton Village Players said “It’s On!” So what will you see? Daphne and Gerald Humphreys are looking forward to their daughter Tina’s wedding, when an altercation over HATS puts the ceremony in jeopardy. Prospective ma-in-law Angela flies over from Oz only to throw another spanner in the works. Robert their not too bright son arrives, and Monica the sexy Bimbo ensures that chaos is complete! Suffice to say, nothing is what it seems. So is the wedding on or is it off ? You will be kept guessing right to the very end! With a cracking script containing shocking revelations and great laugh lines, the audience is sure to be rocking in its seats. “It’s On, It’s Off” is on at Everton Village Hall from 28th to 31st May, and tickets are now on sale from the Box Office on 01777 817275, or visit the website at www. evertonvillageplayers.co.uk T

GOLD ALL THE WAY It was gold all the way as Bawtry Duke of Edinburgh Award Group held its presentation evening. Gold badges were awarded to a number of local young people who had gained the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award scheme, along with certificates marking success at Silver and Bronze levels. Alistair Bucknell, who has previously gained his Gold Award with the Bawtry Group, gave a talk about his journey through the award scheme and its benefits when applying for a university place or within the job market. Although the Mayor of Bawtry was not able to attend, and some young people were away at University, the following awards were announced: Bronze level certificate – Emily Parker (16) Silver level certificate – Erin Whitehouse (19), Hannah Black (19), Tan Hai Nguyen (20), Beth Mitchell (19) and Steph Hynes (18) Gold level badges (certificates are presented at one of the Royal Palaces) – Naomi Wright (18), Amy Wilkes (20), Matthew Bolam (18), Jack Dugher (18), Harry Tong (18), Sherif Saad (18) and Luke Jane (22).
The gold level is particularly demanding. It requires more than a years commitment and it is undertaken at a time when young people are involved with exams at school, college and university. A gold award shows just how hard these young people work. “I am really proud of everyone and pleased they have gained their DofE awards, which are highly regarded throughout the country”, Hilary added. It was Bawtry Groups final meeting, closing its door after almost seven years. Most Doncaster schools now offer the DofE award to their students, so there is no longer a need for an independent group. Leader Hilary Hector will move onto assisting with the Award in DMBC and Doncaster schools. Pictured is Alistair Bucknell (19), with his Gold Certificate, following his attendance at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh. T

Garden View
How low can you grow? Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed 60’s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the potbought specimen under the shade of a tree). Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the 28
BAWTRY TODAY
pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads. Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal when displayed at waist height, you realise how wonderful these tiny creations are. Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stonewall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a
tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too.
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

“The Road Trip”
Featuring:
South Yorkshire Police Band and Corps of Drums & Felicity Simpson – Soprano
My son and I would love to fly to America, hire a Harley Davidson and travel one of the “World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides”. Alas, you have to cut your coat according to your cloth and so last month we got in our tatty car and drove around England instead. We visited all 48 counties and drove over 1,500 miles, ending up back in Bawtry at 3:00am four days later. We took photos taken at every county border to prove we really did do it.
7.30pm Saturday 31st May at Hall Cross Academy Upper School, Thorne Road, Doncaster DN1 2HY
Our road trip will always be special for my son and I; it is something that I might well mention at his wedding or he at my funeral.
THE SEASON CLOSES
While the rhythm of the everyday is comforting and essential to form loyal relationships, sometimes we also need to do something out of the ordinary; create our own, unique memories. After Jesus had been tortured and killed that first Easter, a stranger met with two men who were puzzled and unsettled by the death of the one they had hoped was the long awaited Messiah. The three of them embarked on their own road trip; walking the 7 miles to the next town while the stranger explained the scriptures to them before, right at the end, revealing that he was that Jesus, resurrected from the dead, just as the prophecies had foretold. Jesus could have said who he was right at the start, but he didn’t; choosing instead to give the three of them that shared journey. The two men were so excited when they learnt who the stranger was, they jumped up and walked straight back to Jerusalem in order to tell the disciples. That road trip was a special, unique memory that they would tell their children and grand-children. The Christian life involves the regular rhythm of prayer, worship and service but also needs special times of unique journeys. Could you organise a special experience for you and God to enjoy together, just the two of you? Perhaps go on a retreat, or visit some of the places of the Bible, or read some of CS Lewis’ books on spirituality, etc, etc. Whatever you feel would help you create your own memories and be part of your spiritual road trip; your very own “World’s Greatest Road Trip”.

The 2013/2014 winter season of Tickhill Music Society concerts ended on Friday 11 April with a concert by the Sterling Wind Trio plus a Soprano. The music was preceded by the AGM of the Society ably dispatched by the Chairman and Committee members. The music began with a pleasant Shepherd’s Song by Karl Doppler (not to be confused with C.J.Doppler the physicist). The delightful ‘Dolly Suite’ by Fauré, originally for piano duet, was here presented in a sensitive arrangement for wind trio, starting with a limpid Berceuse and ending with a boisterous finale. The first half ended with another shepherd, this time ‘on the rock’ in Schubert’s tuneful setting. The second half was an interestingly varied selection of works, It began with a sprightly setting of Shakespeare’s ‘Lo, Here the gentle lark’ (should that be ‘Hear’?) and ending with a canine collection called ‘The Dog Chronicles’ by an American lady. In between, the highlight was perhaps the Trio by Howard Blake, with its rippling Allegro and lyrical Waltz. The Sterling Trio was nicely balanced with excellent performers, in particular the piano of Lauren Hibberd providing a solid foundation for the other players and the accomplished soprano of Elise Nurre Dye. Altogether this was an agreeable and satisfying concert, rounding off a most successful season in fine style. The audience surely left looking forward to September and the Boyce Chamber Orchestra in the Parish Church.

Village Friends Raise £1446.16 for Cancer Charity A group of friends from Scrooby and Barnby Moor have joined together to raise an amazing £1446.16 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The friends, together with The Pilgrim Fathers in Scrooby, put on a fundraising evening on 7th March which involved a disco, karaoke and raffle with prizes such as a spa weekend, £50 China Rose vouchers and a family pass Yorkshire Wildlife Park, to name a few. The disco and karaoke proved to be a great hit, continuing until the early hours. Richard Adamson from Scrooby headed the event. Mr. Adamson was keen to support Macmillan Cancer Support as his wife, Carol, is currently receiving support from Macmillan. He said ‘A big thank you to everyone who donated prizes and who came along on the night. Without you, this would not have been possible.’
Swapping Horses and Wellies for Sequins and High Heels Dominique Whittaker 23 has been selected as a finalist in the Miss British Empire Rotherham Beauty Pageant. Dominque is currently the Head Stylist at Urban Lounge in Bawtry, where she and her colleagues are helping her create the perfect hairstyle for the final, which takes place on 30th May at the Phoenix Club in Rotherham. Dominque and the other finalists will be judged over 4 rounds and a one on one interview, the winner will then go on to represent the Rotherham Area in the UK Final of Miss British Empire in November. Dominque is use to competing in competitions as she is a Pro Show Jumper and has ridden all over the world for Great Britain in a number of Horse Riding Competitions but this is the first time she has competed in a beauty pageant. 36

Local fundraising manager, Phoebe Drinkwater said ‘This is a really amazing amount that these guys have raised. It is great to see how much fun they had raising it as well!’ Macmillan Cancer Support work to ensure that no-one has to face cancer alone by providing emotional, practical, medical and financial support for all people affected by cancer. This year in Doncaster, there are several new projects being launched with a focus on improving the lives of people after cancer treatment. These include a new service called ‘Cancer Buddies’, which offers one to one emotional support for people affected by cancer, provided by people who have been through similar situations. For more information on Macmillan Cancer Support, to get involved with volunteering or to hold your own fundraising event, please contact Phoebe Drinkwater, local fundraising manager, on 07801 307035. TICKHILL & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Summer events. The season started on Sunday 4th May with the Wadworth Gala where we ran a coconut shy. Very enjoyable, but over all too quickly - perhaps competitors were allowed to throw too close to the targets or their aim was just too good! We will need a full turn-out of Lions on Saturday 7th June when we will attend the Bawtry Sports Day and Gala as well as being closely involved with The Big Lunch in Tickhill. On the first Saturday of July it will, as usual, be the Tickhill Scout and Guide Association Gala where once again our strawberries will be excellent value.
Senior Citizens. By the end of July we will have supported coach trip days out for a variety of groups in Harworth, Rossington, Wadworth and Tickhill. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

We have some good news if you have been waiting for a space in one of our fun and exciting ‘dancefit' classes that we currently hold at St Nicolas Parish Church Hall, Church Walk, Bawtry, Wednesday 9.00am - Dancefit with Toning Friday 9.30am - Dancefit Dancefit is a mix of all the best from Zumba, FitSteps, and Aerobics (with a small dash of Hip Hop thrown in). A class designed to increase cardiovascular fitness and help firm up the legs and waist in particular. Along with a sensible well-balanced diet, you can expect to lose excess pounds as well as see improvements in overall fitness, memory, co-ordination, balance and and increase in your range of movement in the muscles and joints. Dancefit with Toning is a class with an emphasis on low impact options demonstrated clearly and carefully by our low impact demonstrators. It is a perfect class for those new to Dance Fitness, though you can attend this class if you would like high impact work as both will be offered.
This class is focused on increasing lung and heart capacity as well as increasing flexibility and range of movement. It also helps increase balance and dexterity, to increase reaction times, and build strength needed for everyday activities as well as helping to prevent arthritis and easing pain in joints and spine in particular. Overall fitness will be improved as well as improved sleep pattern and total and abdominal body fat decreases. Attendance also decreases the likelihood of heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes in later life as well as correcting postural defects such as low back pain and rounded shoulders. This class aimed at keeping you moving with a lighthearted approach as you're having fun and a bit of a sing along and can counteract the effects of depression. We add some mat work to this class too. Often using gravity is a very powerful way to add weight which the body pushes against to build strength and flexibility. There are alternatives offered so all levels are welcome. We listen to feedback and put in exercises at the request of the class members so don't hesitate to put your requests in. You'll stretch and relax safely after all this hard work. What do you need to bring with you?

‘Work In Progress’ Fundraising Concert (Mezzo-Soprano: Kamilla Dunstan) Kamilla Dunstan is a young Mezzo-‐Soprano from Doncaster who is in need of support from the local community so that she can continue her studies in music and can pursue a career on the operatic stage. Kamilla was awarded an Entrance Scholarship to the world-‐ renown Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2009 and later completed her Bachelor of Music (with Honours) in 2013.
Ellicar Gardens is open to the public for the National Garden Scheme (NGS) Festival WEEKEND- 8TH JUNE 1-5PM

However, Kamilla may not be able to continue her second year as the fees have risen again. Kamilla was fortunate to be supported by Wilkinson’s Local Stars Scheme this year and is currently applying for other various Trusts around the country, and she is doing everything in her power to raise more funds to pay her fees. ‘Work in Progress’ is a concert organised and hosted by Kamilla to help raise funds to continue her studies. Guest acts include Young Artists from Kamilla’s teaching studio Vivo Music Studio. The guest acts are aged between 14-16 years old and are at the point in their development where they will be auditioning for Performing Arts Schools in the near future. Kamilla also wants to include upcoming young talent around the area so that the local community will hopefully support them in the future with their performance careers. ‘Work in Progress’ Fundraising Concert Mezzo-Soprano Kamilla Dunstan (Young Guest Artists from Vivo Music Studio: Samantha Tindle, Holly Haith & Hannah Ashton) St Mary’s & St Martin’s Church, Blyth Saturday 5th July, 7.30pm.
