Welcome to the
June 2019 edition
Today
“You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome but you can control your at titude and how you deal with it” Allen Klein June already and the summer months are upon us. Exam season is in full swing and you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends. You will find details of many such events on these pages. Following the success of our Jess Glynne and Rita Ora ticket giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for Madness performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. I thought it was about time I updated my photo here in the magazine – people have been starting to notice that the previous image taken quite a few years ago was just a little out of date! Thank you very much to Di Fisher at The Photo Den for offering everyone present at a recent networking meeting the opportunity to have a new headshot taken. Di is an experienced Business Photographer, who also offers Photo Walks, Workshops and social events for those keen to improve their photography skills. Visit www.photoden.biz to find out more. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th June. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.
Best wishes,

YORKSHIRE
T
THE UK’S PREMIER EMERGENCY SERVICES SHOW
A good natural environment is important for the wellbeing and prosperity of all residents in the Doncaster region. For more than 70 years domestic and EU laws have aimed to sustain a wildlife rich natural world. In spite of this, the 2016 State of Nature report showed that 56% of species had declined across the UK between 1970 and 2013. In July 2018, the Prime Minister announced that the Government would introduce an Environmental Bill to underpin its 25 year environmental plan. It hopes to ' leave the environment on a better state than it found it'. All Wildlife Trusts, including Yorkshire welcome this recognition that new laws are needed to slow and reverse the decline of wildlife. The Wildlife Trusts, along with other organisations form the Greener UK Coalition. Together they are campaigning for a new Environmental Bill to benefit nature and our own health, wellbeing and prosperity.

T
We had a fascinating meeting in April with a talk by local author Lynda Stacey who stood in at short notice for Victoria Howard, who was unfortunately unable to attend though illness. We hope she has recovered and look forward to her coming to talk to us in the future. Lynda writes romantic suspense novels and was the winner of the 2015 Choc Lit award for new authors. She told us about her challenging upbringing in Bentley during the miners strike with a father who battled alcoholism and mental illness. During difficult times Lynda would retreat to her room and write stories. Having to leave school to find employment to help the family finances meant that she couldn’t follow a career in writing at that point and worked in a number of jobs, running a business with family members and becoming a scuba diving instructor travelling the world. Sadly this career ended after a car accident but this allowed her to return to her writing and start a successful career as a romantic author. The process of writing is complex and personal to each author but Lynda explained how she writes each book many times to ensure the sequencing is correct and carefully builds up the back stories of the main characters to give depth and emotion to the story. She describes her characters as ‘ imaginary friends ‘ who take over their own stories. It proved to be an inspirational talk from a fascinating author. Next month we will be up in the sky with a talk on black holes and stars!

CANCER DETECTION TRUST T At the time of writing we are finalising plans for our Midsummer Walk on 19th May. Let's hope the sun shines for all the wonderful people who have signed up.
You may have seen our posters "Giving Prostate Cancer the Boot" which is our latest fundraising appeal for a much needed biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. We are so grateful to everyone who has already made a donation to this very worthwhile cause. If you are planning to hold a fundraising event or joining in an organised event on our behalf please do get in touch with us. We can provide you with leaflets, sponsor forms, T-shirts and include your photo taken at the event on our website. We will have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July from 1-5pm where we will be selling new and donated jewellery as well as lots of other goodies. Do come along - this is always a popular event and there is something for all ages. We are still collecting scarves, jewellery and other items for tombola/raffles. We do try and collect wherever possible, but alternatively you can drop them off at our office in Wood Street which is where some of the buses now stop. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), 2nd floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt. co.uk. Also if you would like to volunteer in any capacity you will be made very welcome. As always thank you to everyone who supports us - by helping our local hospitals this in turn benefits local people. It's a win/win situation!

We recently enjoyed our 3rd Annual Club Presentation Evening, celebrating our swimmers’ success and the collective success of the Club. All swimmers received recognition for their contribution to the Club over the past 12 months, and extra recognition goes to the following swimmers who received trophies in their age categories, and Coaches Special awards. It was great to see the swimmers and their families, and the Coaches and Club members all coming together for a social event, which was enjoyed by all. A great surprise for the entire Club was also received on the night in the form of £300 funding from Bassetlaw District Council Community Grant which was announced to us that evening by our guest of honour, Councillor June Evans. That was truly wonderful news and we look forward to putting these funds to good use. Thanks must also be extended to Tickhill & District Lions who assisted with the logistics of the event, and thanks also to the team of volunteers who organised the event. The Club continues to go from strength to strength: more swimmers achieving County and Regional times, more swimmers becoming very close to achieving County times, and with 3 galas and the Club time trials over the course of the next few weeks, there certainly is no time to stand still. If you are interested in competitive swimming for your child (Stage 7 upwards) so that they can improve their techniques, progress in swimming and compete at Club and County events, you can contact us at bircotesswimclub@gmail.com T

KITCHEN MAKEOVERS BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS! Now celebrating its first anniversary, Dream Doors based at Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre in Armthorpe offers kitchen makeovers and redesigns at less than half the cost of a full kitchen refit. Owned and managed by husband and wife team Jerry and Emma Innesbeer, along with the Showroom Manager – Abi Sheppard, Dream Doors has gained an impeccable reputation for transforming old and tired looking kitchens by simply replacing and upgrading the constituent parts. This has proved to be a more cost-effective option compared with ripping the entire kitchen out and starting from scratch. Using the highest quality materials with ‘in vogue’ colours such as cashmere, grey and copper, kitchens can be metamorphosed into stunning and contemporary designs. Cupboards, drawer fronts, worktops, taps, floor tiles and appliances can all be exchanged and even moved to create bespoke kitchens to suit individual tastes and preferences. Quartz overlays are very much sought after nowadays, proving to be a very practical and money saving option. “The kitchen is probably the most important room in the whole house” said Jerry. “At Dream Doors we can install a fresh new kitchen within 48 hours, replacing the doors and worksurfaces for a fraction of the cost of a full re-fit. Kitchen makeovers are popular all over the UK and I’m delighted to say that our modern and welcoming Armthorpe showroom has become a flagship one for the Dream Doors franchise. A ‘Checkatrade’ rating of 9.81 from 32 reviews certainly reinforces our high standing”. Jerry and Abi pride themselves on offering the highest professional
16
standards of personal service. Abi runs the showroom and undertakes the initial customer consultation, whilst Jerry project manages every job from home visit and original design to final installation. They also benefit from having the back up and support of a national organisation, which knows the industry inside out. “The interest in kitchen makeovers shows no sign of abating” said Abi. “People want lovely kitchens they can be proud of, but do not want the cost and hassle of a full re-fit. We offer a wide range of styles, as well as many appliances and white goods, so are able to offer customers a memorable kitchen from a simple door swap, to a full replacement kitchen. Our highlyexperienced fitting team can cope with any job – however big or small!” As well as kitchen makeovers, Dream Doors can also transform any bedroom to suit individual needs and requirements. WHY IS THE MAYFLOWER PILGRIM STORY IMPORTANT? T This is an international story, but they were an ordinary group of people from our area who fled for their lives from their homes, and later from Holland, to become the first permanent immigrants to America: they were ‘religious refugees’. People from here started the uprising, led it in Holland and were elected leaders in America. So they played a major part in global democracy. We lay claim to be the origin of nearly every English-speaking, non-conformist Christian religion, making this area one of the most important religious centres in the world! The story is more important than that of Shakespeare or Brunel. The story is the ‘special connection’ with America that we hear politicians mention as they argue about Brexit. It is the start of modern-day America.
tion. If we get it right, we could attract tens of thousands of visitors a year, providing a massive boost to our local economy. That is why it is so important. If you wish to know more, or to find out what happened, visit us at the Mayflower Pilgrim Visitor Centre, 11 Churchgate, Retford (at the Retford Hub by St Swithun’s Church). We need everyone to help and get involved.

The topic for our May meeting was a little unusual - 'Old Tools'. Our speaker was John Moss from near Swinderby in Lincolnshire. He gave a fascinating talk and demonstration, with the group having to guess the names of his collection of antique tools and equipment used by farmers and craftsmen in times past. They had all stood the test of time, compared to some of our modern day equivalents! He also had for sale home-made various sized wooden trugs. Our trip to Bridlington and Reighton Gap Nursery at the beginning of May went very well. We managed to fill the coach boot with very reasonably priced plants and shrubs! The sun shone in Bridlington, and the fish and chips were good too! A big thank you to Sylvia for organising the day out. We meet again on Tuesday 4th June, 7 pm in the Methodist Church Hall. Our speaker is Sandra Bright and the topic is 'My BBC Allotment Challenge'.

FIRST NEW
SWIMMING POOL
in a generation is celebrating its 1st Successful year! T
Swimstars and Dolphins opened the doors to their brand-new boutique Swim School last year. Sara Pegden and Sue Fynney, mother and daughter who ventured into Swimstars and Dolphins in the year 2000 have transformed the way children learn to swim with their own unique progressive swim scheme which is highly recommended by families. The pool opened within Marrtree Industrial Estate in Wheatley, Doncaster in April 2018. After an initial battle for planning permission the pool has gone from strength to strength with hundreds of children attending and learning to swim every week. The custom built pool has provided a space where families, children and schools can enjoy the exclusive use of the swimming facility making it a more personal and friendly experience. This is one of the many reasons why over 30 Primary Schools in the surrounding area are now using Swimstars to deliver lessons as part of their swimming provision. Other activities such as Aquafit also take place at the pool. Following the success of Quest Parks first year a site is already earmarked in BAWTRY with the plans to develop another model due to high demand. Sara Pegden, the director of the business believes they have a unique plan that has already proven itself to be successful and can be replicated with Swimstars main aim in mind – ‘Enabling more children to take part’ Sue said: “This year has been everything we envisaged and more. It is so uplifting to see families and children attending our pool week in week out with smiling faces. This is the start of great things for Swimstars and we can only thank everyone for their continued support and for following us on this journey” You can follow them on facebook – Swimstars and Dolphins Swim Schools

LIFESTYLE
“Why am I always tired?” I noticed that question is the 4th most asked on Google beginning with the word “why”.
Sure you can scrape by on less, but you increase your chances of many illnesses and the number one way to stop feeling like you need more sleep, is to get more sleep!
When you consider all the possible questions we could ask, it shows just how large a problem a lack of energy is for a large chunk of the population.
2 – Nutrition – Unhealthy diet means an unhealthy gut which creates discomfort and disturbs our sleep as well as sucks out energy.
Isn’t that such a shame, isn’t that such a waste?!
Cut back on the things you know you should be consuming less of and ensure you get your 5 a day of fruit/veg as well as sufficient water to make some immediate impact.
We get around 70 (ish) years on the planet (hopefully) and instead of enthusiastically seeking our potential the majority drag themselves through their “best” years. So let’s take a look about some basics you can take control of today to increase your energy and inject more enthusiasm into your life. 1 – Common sense is often the least common action, so let’s start there… get some sleep! Sure, there are times in your life when burning the candle at both ends is unavoidable, the arrival of a baby into your life for example. But these should be temporary and every single respectable sleep expert agrees that human beings require 7-8 hours unbroken sleep to function at their best. The late night channel hopping and web browsing is not pouring anything useful into our lives, so cut that out and set a more suitable bedtime.
24
3 – Exercise/Activity – Being active increases energy, decreases stress, elevates mood and releases chemicals in our body that allow better rest. Pick an activity you enjoy, is suitable for your fitness level and start to reap the rewards within a matter of weeks, sometimes days. 4 – Life Plan – The above 3 improvements can make a big impact for sure. But even with those ticked off your list, nothing saps your energy like a long-standing problem hanging over you. Lack of finances, relationship problems, anxiety, stress from work, lack of goals to strive for…these all consume our thoughts, suck out our energy and steal our enthusiasm. So let’s get practical. What is the biggest issue on your mind right now that is causing you to feel uneasy, restless of stressed?
What is the first step you could take today to begin solving this? It could be creating a plan to progress or change your career, perhaps an important conversation with someone you’ve been meaning to have, maybe seek guidance from a financial planner, go to the doctors with a medical issue you’ve been ignoring. Only you know what it is and chances are the more you resist seeking the solution, the more you need it. Imagine yourself a month from now. Getting enough deep sleep, eating better, more active, solutions for the major problems in your life found, working towards goals that inspire you and feeling re-energised, focused, fit, healthy! It’s a happy thought isn’t it and it can absolutely become a reality, but only if you choose to make it that way by taking action, the sooner the better. As always, go create a day and life that counts, have more desires that excuses.

AN EXHIBITION OF WORK T
by Amina Khan at the Retford Hub The next ‘must see’ exhibition features the work of Amina Khan. It is on now in the Gallery and runs until 22 June. Originally from Liverpool but now based in Gainsborough, she studied Fashion and Textiles and qualified as an art teacher. Numerous exhibitions of her work have appeared. Amina says, ‘I am pleased to present my new collection at The Hub in Retford. It is both contemporary and abstract, and focuses mainly on my love of colour, pattern and texture. There are five themes: abstract paintings, floral, abstract landscapes, seahorses/ butterflies and Pop Art. The work is varied and could be seen as a retrospective as it shows my progression over the years. My first love is to paint nature, most especially flowers, butterflies, and landscapes. My colours are vibrant and intense. I enjoy painting both from life and in the abstract. Amina is also regularly in The Hub, where she runs holiday workshops for children, including this year’s series of summer holiday classes. These focus on defined skills and techniques, in levels from beginner to accomplished, including watercolour, acrylic, mixed media, silk painting and drawing. A maximum of five people attend, so that individual attention, and therefore progress, is assured throughout the day. Contact The Hub for details: 01777 860414

MISSON EASTER BUNNY TREASURE HUNT T
…was a great success with 35 entries on a very warm and sunny Easter Sunday! It was a lovely family funfilled day with some adults even joining in with the children, just for the fresh air and walking exercise around the village. The
children were excited to have found the woolly bunnies hidden in various locations, then it was back to the community centre for refreshments and prizes. A superb array of cakes were donated for the event (I made 60 buns myself) which were appreciated by everyone - and with the sale of woolly bunnies, woolly egg cosies, cakes and generous donations the event raised almost £100.00! This was totally unexpected, so many thanks to everyone involved, including Misson Thimbles for making the gorgeous bunnies and cosies, and to all who baked cakes and made a donation, and especially Brenda Lindley who organised the event.
MISSON SPRING CLEAN UP
Another fantastic annual ‘Spring Clean Up’ morning was held in late April, with a few less volunteers than normal but many thanks to those who turned out, perhaps some were put off by the weather forecast of rain and wind. In the event, there was a breeze but no rain till later in the day thankfully! To say we thought the village was reasonably clean, we still filled
34
around 70 sacks with weeds, moss and litter etc - it’s very disheartening that some people still toss litter around especially at the Misson stone sign at the village entrance. A lot of hard work by volunteers has gone in to clearing and looking after that area, especially having enhanced the stone sign with plants and flowers so that it looks attractive when driving or walking in to the village. One of our volunteers cleaned up the hedgerows from the stone sign almost to the Tunnel Tech factory…both sides of the road. Other volunteers did a clean up before going on holiday. As always, many thanks to Misson & Springs WI for superb refreshments - they look after us so well - and also to Bassetlaw District Council for equipment, and promptness in collecting the filled rubbish sacks. We are lucky to have volunteers that clean up all year round not just on the clean up days, and it shows because people from surrounding areas are commenting on how nice our village looks, especially the garden area opposite the community centre which is now looking well established this year. The next one is in November so please come along with your children to help for a couple of hours…we all have a part to play in keeping our countryside, towns and villages clean and tidy.
ANNUAL MISSON PARISH RESIDENTS Meeting was held on 1st May with an excellent attendance in our newly refurbished hall (see advert elsewhere in
magazine) with refreshments available in the short interval. Chair of Misson Parish Council, councillor Jayne Watson invited the various village groups to give a presentation on their activities and events during the past year, but proceedings started first with a presentation from Tunnel Tech North, with projected images of how far on they were with the building of the enclosure in the hope of eradicating the nuisance odours by the end of 2019. There was a Q&A session which lasted around an hour, but we were still left feeling disgruntled by how slow TTN have been and still are with their efforts at stopping the odour emissions in to the village…we’ll just have to watch this space and keep complaining when odours are a nuisance. The last 12 months have been very busy for all the community groups, especially Misson Community Association. We managed to promote several events including a 70/80’s disco, an evening with Jessica Mary Brett, spring and autumn cleans, village show, a scarecrow weekend, Christmas fayre, educational projects, to mention just a few - our events were many and varied and well attended. Misson Parish Council have also initiated several projects during the past year or so, with extensive restoration of the church yard and cemetery, the Pinfold and many other projects in the village - if you want to know what’s happening come along to the meetings and the annual residents meeting. all the community groups - not forgetting the hall can also be booked for special events, meetings and parties on 01302285709 / missoncommunity@ gmail.com. It’s all still happening in Misson! Yes, work is still ongoing with various projects around the village, especially the cemetery, which to date has been cleared and tidied up considerably, with grave stones being cleaned and lifted where appropriate. This is mainly due to Lengthsman Eric Jordan, and with help from fellow Lengthsman Matthew Guest the cemetery is looking spruced up at last. Therefore, an idea has emerged that perhaps a small group of volunteers could be formed to help with light weeding, looking after and encouraging existing wildflowers, and perhaps plant more of them in the future such as the humble cornflower. This would certainly add another attractive dimension to the village improvements and enhancements scheme, and helps the wildlife too. You don’t need to be an expert, just willing to give an hour or two a week depending on seasons as a community why not create a village that can eventually enter competitions such as ‘Best Kept Village’? It’s not impossible! Anyone interested in being part of a gardening group should contact Councillor Julie Watkins at julie@hobsonhague.co.uk / tel 01302-710680. Parish Council meetings are held every first Wednesday of the month at 7pm.

A catch-up from Wise Owl
Isn't everywhere looking lovely this June? I'm having to fly further for food these days. Hungry mouths to feed but not as big a brood as last year. My owl pals say the same, it' s a real shame. Anyhow, as I roam foraging for morsels, I want you to know I appreciate the amazing scenery, colourful fields and busy hedgerows. If we are forced to leave it will be missed. Misson Carr SSSI is home. And home is where the heart is...but also where a potential fracking site is. One place I roamed was to Doncaster Market Place with old Tawny. Bit of an occasion that Tour de Yorkshire. Thank you everyone for all the support. I made the national press four times in one week. We owls love cycling and so do heaps of you Humans. We love it because it's pure, zero danger to us. So that got me thinking. Why on earth would the giant company INEOS sponsor a team? INEOS is sponsoring the PEDL (Petroleum Exploration Development Licence) 125 m from my nest to the tune of 40%. Wow! So here's a few snippets from what I've been reading and finding out: 'Ineos was by far the biggest emitter of the main greenhouse gas blamed for disrupting the climate.' (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) 'Ineos's safety record is appalling. the company is also a climate disaster waiting to happen.' (Food and Water Europe) 'Their purchase of Team Sky is deeply depressing. It is a humanpowered sport with fans who care passionately about the environment. Ineos does not fit into that agenda.' ( Craig Bennett, chief executive, Friends of the Earth). And then folks, I found this: "Ineos 'mislead' public over fracking in Sherwood Forest." (The Guardian) Now hang on a minute - this is getting increasingly frightening. And I'm told thumper trucks will be thumping in Clumber Park doing seismic surveys! We all know now what that leads to. Time to stand up. Time to speak out before it's too late. We can win this. We need everyone to work together to save what we love.

PASTOR’S PAGE
At the beginning of the year I decided I needed a challenge – something that would give a sense of achievement, good for my physical and mental health, do-able on my days off and, err, cheap.
I chose to try and walk a long distance footpath. It needed to be one within reach of Bawtry and not too hilly. In the end I chose the Viking Way which runs south from the Humber Bridge, through the Wolds to Lincoln, skirts around Grantham, passes Rutland Water before ending at Oakham Library. Logistically I would be very dependent on the good nature of my wife as each suggested section of the walk generally starts and finishes in a tiny village a long way from an adequate bus route. So, early each Monday morning we have set off in our cars to the end point of that day’s walk where I leave my car, then drive to the start point where Sharon drops me and heads off back to her day; leaving me to walk the 10 to 15 miles back to my car. Last month I finally finished the walk, after 16 weeks and 147 miles; tired but very pleased. Lincolnshire County Council have produced a very helpful series of leaflets which describe the route, give nuggets of history along the way and have a simplified map of that section’s walk. I also carried the relevant OS Map for the day’s walk and my mobile phone with a very good maps app.
T
All along the route are signposts with picture of a Viking helmet on, which guide you to the next one. You would think that with these four helps, then it would be impossible to go wrong, but I managed to a few times – once by about three miles. Taking those Mondays and walking for four or five hours gave me lots of memories: the sun shimmering on the Humber, hares playing in a frosty field, seeing Lincoln Cathedral from over 20 miles away, coming across delightful villages and going for literally hours at a time without seeing another person. Alas, I have other goals in life which are proving a little harder to accomplish: to be a more supportive friend, a wiser parent, a more considerate driver. I want to see more good in people, to have more faith in God, to marvel more and to worry less. If I could get lost on a walk despite having four fool-proof aides, it’s no wonder I struggle at times to meet these other, more esoteric, objectives. Please be patient with me; just like on the Viking Way, I will keep plodding on, keep checking I’m going the right way, turning around when I go wrong. But I am also determined to enjoy the journey, keep my eyes open for surprises and stop for a breather when I need to. Now; who’s up for a new challenge?

Well done to everyone who has attended the choir evenings. The response has been excellent not only with regard to the amount of people attending but for your enthusiasm and energy whilst being there. From a musical point of view, particularly pleasing is the quality of sound; for such a new choir this is quite unusual, so well done to all. I feel I must also comment on the musicality demonstrated and the quickness to learn new songs and engage in the various activities that you've all done wholeheartedly. Well done! Thank you for making this a pleasurable evening for myself. Many thanks to the Metcalfe trust for allowing me to use the Village Hall.

Hello Everyone, I hope when everyone is reading this the sun has decided to visit us, our dogs hate the rain, and we all feel so much better when the sun shines.
LOTTIE
We are all looking forward to the Mayflower Ball and hope that we raise lots of money, as well as having an amazing time with everyone that bought tickets to join us on the evening. We now have an appeal for a beautiful little dog that I have been helping to take care of. She is so sweet and only hope that the surgery planned is able to go ahead and is successful. If you can help by donating even a small amount that would be amazing. We need a phenomenal amount of money to help her. Please read on. Lottie’s Appeal. Soon after arriving with us, Lottie’s carers noticed large growths inside both of her ears. During further investigations by the vets, they could see that the growths are completely blocking her ear canals, leaving her in great pain and unable to hear.

Blue Male 10 Mths May 2019 Possibly Possibly Older
Blue has had to come into Mayflower’s care as his owner was allergic to him and he was making her asthma worse. He is new in and finding life a little hard at the moment. As a previous housecat its very scary here with all the new smells and sounds but, given time, he will soon come round. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. Although he has been a housecat so far he is young enough possibly enjoy exploring a secure garden in his new home. He hasn’t lived with another cat but initial introductions have been positive so fingers crossed that he will find a feline friend to get up to mischief with ! He hasn’t met any dogs so we are unsure how he will react. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.
We will never know how long she has been suffering like this, but we do know that with your support we will do our very best to make sure it won’t be for much longer. Lottie has already started on much needed pain relief to help her feel more comfortable and she is travelling to see a specialist. The operation alone to remove the growths has been quoted at around £4,500 and that’s not including the consultations fees or any medication that may be needed. Purse strings are already stretched near to breaking but we can’t let this lovely girl suffer like this. Please support us as we get her out of pain and let her hear, maybe for the first time. If you would like to help towards Lottie’s operation you can do so by one of the following options. Cash or a cheque can be handed into reception, a cheque in the post to Narrow Lane, Bawtry, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN10 6QJ or donations can be sent by PayPal info@mayflowersanctuary.co.uk Please make a note with donations to Lottie Appeal. Even a small amount would make such a difference towards Lottie’s care. Many thanks for reading this. We will look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes

Hunter has come into our care as his previous owner was moving and unable to take him with her. He has lived in a flat since he was a kitten and at 12 years old we feel that he is too old now to adjust to going outside. Therefore he must remain safely indoors in his new home. Hunter found life here very difficult at first and hid under his blanket for days. Gradually, as his confidence grew, he started to creep out to see what was going on. He is now confident enough to sit on his scratchpost watching the world go by although he can still be spooked easily. Once he gets to know you, he’s a fussy little chap and can be quite vocal around dinner time. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. He has previously lived with another cat but hasn’t been confident enough to make any feline friends yet. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

We have designed a career enhancement program that will actively engage and support people in making better career choices: Our objectives are to: • Actively engage with people to assess their career needs. • Help more of Doncaster’s young people find the right academic and vocational routes for the careers they aspire to. • Supporting adults in a deadend job find their way out/ to career progression. After 30 years of service at the New Hall Bawtry, the trustees/management committee have agreed to vacate the premises and allow Bawtry Town Council to take day to day responsibility for the running and upkeep of the hall. It is also hoped that
the surplus funds associated with letting out the hall will be placed in a trust fund for future upgrades/improvements that the hall will no doubt require. BTC have appointed Cllr’s Lukey, Greer and Scott to form the interview panel for the positions of booking clerk and caretaker, hopefully these positions will be filled very shortly. In the interim all booking enquiries should be directed to Angela Harrison (Clerk to the Council on - 07494893954), additional details are also listed on the BTC website –New Hall page http:// bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk/newhall/ where you will find details of the facilities available and the hire charges. One of the biggest concern in our town at the moment is the amount of retail premises being burgled, in the past month several including Pangea, Bawtry Gym, El Toro to name just three, with the most recent being the ‘Tasting Note’ on Market Hill having several bottles of gin taken from the shop during daylight hours, we all must work together to make this scourge disappear quickly.
The Neighbour Hood Watch is there to help all in Bawtry, we cannot do this without residents and businesses signing up to the scheme, anyone be it residential or business wishing to join can you please contact Jerry Cooke using the email bedeford@ btconnect.com, we all must act now. Please remember to check all windows in your house are closed before going out, keep all valuables out of sight in your car and remember to check it is locked at all times Jerry gives regular updates regarding the NHW at the bi-monthly residents group meeting held in the Crown Hotel, all residents and the business community are welcome to attend. The group is growing so let’s keep it moving in the right direction. Bawtry retailers have introduced the Bawtry card scheme for Bawtry residents, now with over 1000 members the Bawtry Card offers monthly discounts and offers at the restaurants and bars in our town, in may Zini’s Bawtry’s Bar, 31 Market Place , the Crown Hotel and Pangea all took part, please look to the BRG Facebook page for all the information or use the email address www.yourbawtrycard. com Following the closure of the previous polo club in 2018, Bawtry Polo Club - with new owners and an entirely new ethos - opened earlier this year. The renowned Visit Bawtry Cup
will be hosted (with some exciting changes!) at the usual venue in Misson Springs on Sunday 14th July 2019. Tickets available shortly and in the meantime, they are looking for appropriate non-food/drink retail stall holders to attend. Stall holders will require their own insurance, staff, small pagoda/marquee/tent (larger temporary constructions may be catered for, please contact to discuss) and a variety of items for sale on the day. No leaflet stalls please. Please contact Vicky at info@bawtrypoloclub.co.uk to apply or to register interest for tickets Residents will be pleased to know the BARS have engaged DMBC to carry out the repairs required at the Wharf Street play area, this has been achieved by the BTC and the BRG working together to persuade BARS that it was essential, work will also commence on the lighting shortly, unfortunately the lighting will not be needed until later on in the year. Councillor Rachael Blake is running a Health and Wellbeing program at the New Hall in Bawtry, a full update will be in the next issue, Rachael is also speaking regarding this at the next BRG meeting on the 30th of May at the Crown Hotel. Meetings start at 7:30pm in the Ledger Room.

The Great Plague of London lasted eighteen months and killed around 100,000 people. That’s a serious statistic but David Bell who is also known as the Plague Doctor of Eyam tells the tale in a unique and fascinating way. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be constipated in 17th century London, well David is the one to tell you. His talk is full of heady and ripe anecdotes about the era, along with amusing and poignant facts about the town of Eyam at that time. His talk is surprising and not for the faint-hearted, so if you book him for your group – be prepared! We had several visitors attend our meeting in April to listen to David’s multi-faceted presentation and we were very pleased to receive much positive feedback regarding the welcome and hospitality shown to our guests. In May our speaker will be Victoria Howard whose talk is entitled ‘I need a hero’. Victoria is a romantic novelist and her theme is centred on romantic heroes past and present. Do come along and join us for what promises to be a very entertaining evening and you will be most welcome at our warm and friendly group. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; don’t hesitate to turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578 for any further information.

Bawtry Town Council - June 2019 Town Mayor’s Annual Report for the Year This report covers the period 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019. The year has been very busy for Bawtry Town Council. A significant effort has been made to raise the profile of the Council. Council members have made regular attendances at Bawtry Residents Group meetings. I attend the meeting and give an overview of Council meetings and answer questions from residents. Regular posts on the Council Facebook page have also improved communication with residents. The Council is taking positive steps to improve Bawtry (including the submission of a Neighbourhood Plan, which will shortly go to a public referendum). However, it is not doing this alone, consultations with the Bawtry Retail Association and local community groups have enabled the Council to move forwards with its plans for the town. Most local community groups are represented at the Town Council Events Working Group. This group successfully arranged the senior residents Christmas lunch and a fancy dress disco for our younger residents. Bawtry Town Council members also volunteered for the Big Wheel at the Bawtry Christmas lights switch on. New litter bins, a notice board at Market Hill and sponsorship plaques have also been purchased.
pavements etc. Thank you to our DMBC ward councillor Rachael Blake for the work she carries out on our behalf. But there are challenges ahead for Bawtry Town Council. The Council have made a significant investment with Bawtry Action for Recreation and Sport (BARS) for the multi sport and community building at the Memorial Sports Ground. An annual grant of £8,500 is awarded to BARS to assist with the ground maintenance. It is hoped that in the near future BARS can become more financially sustainable so that the £8,500 can be used by the Council for investment into other projects. BARS must also continue to maintain their Wharf Street play area. The precept remains a long-term problem for current and future members of the Council. Many believe the precept should fund the routine expenditure of the Town Council – but it presently falls short of this. However, a balance between the precept and routine Council expenditure will take many years to achieve. The significant period of zero precept increases and a reliance on Market Hill car park revenue has caused an imbalance in Council finances and caused some irritation for residents and retailers.
The impact on the infrastructure of Bawtry by the expansion of local villages is a concern. The Council regularly comments on the various planning applications issued by Bassetlaw District Donations were made to Bluebell Wood and the DRI Children’s ward with grants to third parties additionally made during the year. Hopefully work will commence during May 2019. DMBC have kindly provided funding for the relocation. The loss of the bank and the post office has been of significant concern to residents and retailers. Whilst the bank decision is As of May 1st 2019, the Council will run its services from the New irreversible, I have been involved in meetings with our local MP, Hall in Bawtry with current members of the view that the Council Caroline Flint and senior Post Office officials. The second retailers, positive or negative, are always welcome. If we don’t know about problems we can’t address them. Council meetings are held and final phase, the resurfacing and possible enhancement of the Market Hill car park, will take place prior after the Council take back on the first Tuesday of each month at the New Hall, Bawtry, starting at 7pm. There is an agenda item specifically for public participation. the control of the car park in April 2021. However, a potential short fall in funding for the third phase of the Market Hill improvements needs to be addressed over the next 18 months. The first two phases will impact heavily on the Council financial reserves.
A monthly newsletter is published in Bawtry Today with the Council’s meetings minutes and agenda available on our website, as are details about The New Hall bookings procedure. www. bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors
It was great to see so many residents at our last litter pick on Tickhill Road. Due to the number attending we were able to cover the whole area and we all noticed that over the last year of doing our litter picks we are starting to see a difference and less litter is being dropped. Thank you to all these volunteers who give up their time every month but also to the many residents who pick up litter every day as they walk about the town. We know residents are concerned about the impact of new fast food outlets at Blyth services and at future litter picks we will be separating our litter and recycling what we can and letting fast food outlets know how much of their litter we have collected. Thank you as well to those residents who contacted us following last month’ s update about changes to training flights at the airport. Everyone said they have noticed a difference and this information has been sent onto the airport to ask them to maintain these changes. Health and Well-Being Group After 2 events to find out residents’ views the first meeting of the group was held in May. Representatives from the Town Council, Bawtry Residents Group, Austerfield Study Centre, Bawtry Community Church, Bawtry Christ the Redeemer Church and Bawtry Community Library along with interested residents met to look at all the ideas and see which ones could be taken forward. Many ideas are going to be taken forward and we will be having a stall at the Sports day at the Memorial Sports Ground so please come along and find out what we are doing. We are covering all aspects of wellbeing including physical and emotional well-being as well as improvements to our environment including asking for speed limits to be reduced. The latter is a question that we get asked on a regular basis and we have been providing the response from Highways Officers in this update over the last 4 years. We will continue to ask for this to be reduced on Doncaster Road and between Bawtry and Austerfield. The 22nd June is the weekend of the Great Get Together so come along and have a chat over a cup of tea and meet members of the group. Further details of our work will be included in future updates. Uneven Footpaths and Potholes Residents have contacted us about concerns about the footpaths on Doncaster Road. I asked the Highways team to inspect but there was no defects that they identified that met their criteria for repair but they have asked the street scene team to do work to widen the footpaths due to overhanging hedges and trees and I am waiting for their response on this. Residents have been complaining for some time about the potholes between the surgery and the new hall on Peakes Croft. I have asked them to visit on a number of occasions and the response this time is that the area will be added to the resurfacing programme for this financial year.

For those not familiar with the Hope Centre, it is in the courtyard next to Pangea and is the first building on the right as you go into the courtyard. If you prefer to come directly to the area we will be tidying, please look on the Bawtry Residents Group Facebook page for details a few days before the litter pick as we choose the area based on what we see nearer the time. Update on Speeding in Austerfield For residents who attended the walk and meeting with Highways and South Yorkshire Police I am still waiting for an update from the Highways officer as they are still assessing what can be done to reduce speeding and make the main road safer. Next surgery As always we don’t have enough room to include everything that we are working on so do get in touch if you think there is something that we should be including but haven’t. Rachael will be at the next Library coffee morning on 14 June from 10am – 12pm so do pop in for a chat. Also Rachael attends the Austerfield Parish Council meeting which is usually the 3rd Monday of every month at 7pm in the Study Centre. If you can’t attend our surgeries, we are happy to meet you any time in the library, so please do get in touch if you need any assistance with any council services including housing. Please get in touch with us if we can assist in any way.
