This month we celebrate Today Publications 13th birthday! Tickhill Today was the first magazine and during the first week of March 2005, we delivered the first issue to homes across Tickhill and nervously awaited a reaction. Thirteen may be considered unlucky by some, but I feel very lucky to have enjoyed the last 13 years continuing to distribute magazines each month in Tickhill, and then adding Rossington in 2006, Bawtry in 2007, Harworth & Bircotes in 2011, Bessacarr & Cantley in 2013 and most recently DN2. Long may they all continue. A magazine for the expanding Plantation area of Balby is in the pipeline for 2018, so watch this space, or get in touch if you think you would like to be in that magazine! As always, if you contact someone advertising within these pages, do tell them where you found them. Whether that be a business advertising products or services, or a group, charity or organisation promoting their meetings, activities or events. Without the advertisers and community contributors these magazines would not exist, and would not be helping our local communities to thrive. Appreciate your Bathroom Our bathrooms are one of the busiest rooms used in the home. Whether this is for showering, bathing or pampering, our bathrooms can often become tired due to the amount of use they get on a daily basis. With a small amount of time and effort you will be able to appreciate your bathroom just that little bit more and put some love back into the room. Imagine entering your bathroom to see neatly folded towels on the hand rail, clean and clear surfaces with just a few of your beauty products by the sink. Candles on the windowsill and essential oils by the bathtub awaiting your next soak in the tub. If this image is far from the reality of how your bathroom currently looks perhaps it’s time to have a fresh start! To appreciate your bathroom more, you need to start with the décor. It is no good if your bathroom appears dull and lifeless with tiles that have seen better days, peeling paint and sealant, and limescale build up clouding the shower door. Start with a deep clean, there are lots of products now that can help with discoloured grout and limescale build up if these are issues in your bathroom.

Hi Everyone, It feels like winter is still with us, but today has been sunny so there’s a hope of spring around the corner. We have been so busy here which is great as it means more dogs and cats are rehomed making more room for others to come in and hopefully the list of waiting dogs and cats will get a little smaller. We have been doing lots of fund raising over the last few weeks. Marks and Spencer have been of particular support to us in 2017/2018. We will be outside their Wheatley Hall Rd store over most of March with some of our dogs, so please come along and say hello. The M&S team will also be coming to the Sanctuary to take part in a Charity day, dog walking and looking at those odd jobs that we always struggle to get around to doing. They are an amazing team and we will always be grateful for their support. Race night with a Pie and Pea supper will be held in Misson Community Hall on the 24th Feb, the last one was such fun so we hope this one raises lots of money for us. A May Ball will be held at The Crown Hotel Bawtry on the Friday the 18th of May. This event promises to be a fantastic evening a drink on arrival 3 course meal, disco, raffle and auction. There will also be a photographer to capture that special moment. Eastside Magazine will be there to cover the whole evening, so get out those beautiful evening gowns or cocktail wear and join us for this

We tootled off to Nottingham to catch the Viking exhibition ‘Rediscover The Legend’ at the Djanogly Gallery before it closes on 4 March – (you just have time yourselves) and have to say that this show which is a ‘major show’, on tour from the British Museum and York Museums Trust was very underwhelming. I’d met a few people who had seen it and said how good it was, we shouldn’t miss it, etc. There just seemed to be not very many exhibits and rather a lot of display stands. It was a room full of screens, and to be honest the work was OK. We weren’t looking at superb craftsmanship, it was fairly straightforward silver-smithing, and why should a Viking metal worker not be able to do that? There was one very fine iron helmet and lots of coins. No one makes anything anymore, we don’t cook, we don’t sew, we don’t make our own jewellery, but it is not enough to put a few twists of silver bar in a case and call it a ‘major show’. I hope if you went you were more thrilled than me. However, their next show which is a contemporary landscape exhibition looks interesting. The Sunshine Vitamin Vitamin D supplements can be found in most pharmacies, supermarkets or health food shops. Some groups of people are likely to have lower levels of Vitamin D in their bodies or they require a greater amount. These include pregnant or breastfeeding women, breastfed babies, adults over the age of 65 years or those that spend very little time outside. As Dietitians we often talk about a healthy balanced diet and that if you eat a healthy diet there should be no need for a supplement. Vitamin D is the exception to the rule. Fertile Ground This month the days get longer and the sun gets stronger...we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises.

Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields. The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general-purpose fertiliser.

Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertiliser.

A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium.

Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertiliser. All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact, the basics are quite simple.

There are other macro-nutrients: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium and sulphur, which should be present in any good general-purpose fertiliser.

NPK - This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for:

Plants also need micro-nutrients: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum.

N - Nitrogen

Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilisers which contain vitamins, proteins and fats.

P - Phosphorous K - Potassium Together these are known as the macronutrients and each of them has its own use. Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-theground parts of the plants.

So, don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC..or rather NPK!

Parish Precept Increase 2018/2019

Background

This anomalous situation dates back more than 10 years. In 2007 the Council, determined to introduce parking charges on Market Hill, made a contract At the Town Council meeting on 23rd January with Excel Parking to manage the car park. Council expenditure increased over time, and instead of 2018 members decided to increase the Parish precept (which is collected as part of the Council increasing the precept, the Council increased parking charges and parking hours, culminating in the present Tax by DMBC) from £27,061 to £36,000. When full control of the car park reverts back to the Council in 2021 members may also want to “wind back” charges/charging hours, because retailers tell us they have damaged the town’s economy. Thank you to all residents who have contacted us since last month’s update. An update on some of these concerns are provided below but we thought it would be useful if people are new to reading our update to explain a little about our role. As Doncaster Council councillors who have been elected by residents of Bawtry, Austerfield and Rossington ward our role is to represent the interests of all residents in the ward. We can deal with any complaints that you have about Doncaster Council and St Leger services as we have direct access to the officers providing these services. In addition, we can assist with complaints that you have about any services that are delivered in Bawtry and Austerfield, often referring you on to the most appropriate person – if we don’t have an answer we know someone who does or can find the person who does have the answer! We don’t just deal with complaints though – our role is to do anything that improves the ward and support groups and residents to improve the ward so we are pleased to support the Town Council, Residents Group and Bawtry Retailers Association and the plethora of important community groups that exist across the ward. Many of the issues we get involved with are not complaints but suggestions from residents about improvements that they would like to see. We realise that accessing information is the first hurdle that has to be overcome before beginning the process of trying to change things. We regularly receive updates from Doncaster council and other organisations which we send onto the Residents Group, Bawtry Community Library and Austerfield Parish Council for posting on their Facebook pages, but not everyone uses Facebook. Therefore, we have purchased a notice board and thanks to Bawtry Library we will be putting it close to the desk where information will be displayed. We would welcome your feedback on this so do let us know if there are things that you would like to see on there that we aren’t including. Also we realise that to contact us, not everyone has access to a mobile and ringing us can be expensive from a landline. Therefore, we have provided a new landline number below for you to leave a message and we will call you back in the evening or the next day if we have evening meetings. Hopefully this and the notice board will mean that residents are not having to cope alone with long standing problems as has happened this week. Finally, to reassure you, when you contact us and we ask an officer to respond to your complaint, we always anonymise the information – we do not send your details along with the complaint (unless of course it is specific to your property such as tree problems, drainage problems etc) and generally we send the email saying that we have had a complaint from a resident about x and use your information in the body of the email and always ask for a reply to come back to us so we can then send it onto you. Hope the above is useful and explains our role. Now onto this month’s updates. Street lighting in Austerfield A number of residents in Austerfield have had to cope without street lighting for over a week and having contacted the street lighting team on a number of occasions I received a reply that engineers had attended the problem on Tuesday 6 Feb and a fuse had blown in the supply column which was replaced; unfortunately, the fuse blew again and the problem was being caused by the NPG supply to the column and DMBC have had to pass this problem onto the power supplier to have the problem fixed. The date given for the repair is 54 BAWTRY TODAY

9 March but engineers believe that in their experience NPG usually respond much quicker when there are a number of lights affected. School walk yellow lines From conversations at the Town Council, the problems with parking on School Walk and inconvenience to residents with ambulances and other large vehicles being unable to access properties, resulted in residents asking DMBC to consult on having parking restrictions – this was a few years ago. For some reason this didn’t progress and we were asked to ask highways officers to look at this again which they did at the end of last year. The informal consultation ended on 8 January. A number of comments were received with concerns that the proposed time restrictions would not resolve the current parking problems. Therefore, double yellow lines will be put down to prevent double parking and obstructing the public highway. The Traffic Regulation Order is currently being drafted and a letter sent to residents to begin the formal consultation. Details of the proposals will be put onto lampposts and will be on our notice board in the Library. Nat West Bank The response from Nat West Bank to complaints about their proposed closure has been poor and they are maintaining their stance that the bank does not have many customers (48) and therefore is going to close at the end May. Please do voice your concerns to Nat West Bank at every level of their organisation; sign the petition in the library; contact Caroline Flint our MP and please do come along to the next meeting of the group – the date will be advertised in the library and on Facebook. Anti-social behaviour At Doncaster Council’s full council meeting in January, the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire and the Police Commissioner attended to take questions from councillors about their concerns. A resident watching this (as it is recorded and available for everyone to watch) saw me ask my question and was concerned that I mentioned that compared to other wards anti-social behaviour is not something that residents are contacting me about but speeding is a big problem for many residents. Following this more residents have contacted me about anti-social behaviour and how this is affecting their families. If you too are experiencing problems, please do get in touch. Speeding across the ward is a problem and Austerfield is no exception to this. We are in contact with South Yorkshire Police requesting more enforcement action and 2 operations have been done recently: 4 Jan – 60 vehicles – one driving over 30, 26 October, 50 vehicles, one driving 30-35. This does seem very low compared to what I have experienced and regularly being over taken doing 30mph through the village and they are doing more operations on a more regular basis.
