2015 edition This month Today Publications celebrates its 10th birthday! It is 10 years since the first issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. (and nearly 8 years since the first Bawtry Today). I thank everyone who has supported any of the 5 publications that we now have during those 10 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they find them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! I hope that you will continue to enjoy YOUR community magazine for many years to come.

Bigger choice… Bigger Value… Same great service… Carpets Vinyl Laminate Wood Flooring Amtico Flooring MADE TO MEASURE BLINDS Vertical, Venetian, Roller, Wood Slatted

I know that many of you always read this introduction and following my comments last month you may be wanting to know how my quest for a new kitchen during 2015 is coming along. Well I am pleased to report that some decisions have now been made, and by the time the next magazine arrives it is possible that some work may have commenced! More details in future issues! The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th March.

Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time just before Easter with your April magazine.

Best wishes, Paula x

ROSSINGTON Male Voice Choir For some time the choir has experienced a serious problem in recruiting new members. We have lost a large number through age and illness and in consequence are again appealing for people of any age or ability, with an interest in singing to join us, in saving what has been a fundamental feature of our community for many years. We were established in 1934 and have given virtually unbroken service since. In order to encourage others to join we propose to hold an open evening at our practice at:THE RAGUSA CENTRE, RADBURN ROAD, ROSSINGTON ON WEDNESDAY 18th. MARCH BETWEEN 7.00p.m. and 9.00.p.m. Light refreshments will be available IN A BREAK WITH TRADITION THIS INVITATION IS EXTENDED TO BOTH MALE AND FEMALE SINGERS SINCE IT IS NOW FELT THAT THE CHOIR CANNOT DEVELOP WITHOUT BEING OPEN TO ALL. THIS IS HOPEFULLY OF INTEREST TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE ESPECIALLY WELCOME. T

Head Shave Doncaster Live for Aurora! at Home Scheme Doncaster Live at Home Scheme is thrilled to be taking over Tickhill Pop-in. The Pop-In is a long running friendship group that is very important to a lot of people, so we are really glad we have been able to stop it from closing. New members are very welcome, so anyone who is interested in joining us should not hesitate to get in touch we have spaces at all our friendship groups across Doncaster.

Ann Holden & Neece Francess-Allen Woman love their hair probably more than anything else, so everyone at Aurora was amazed when our fabulous volunteer, Neece Francess-Allen decided that she wanted to shave her head to raise money for Aurora Wellbeing Centre. Neece works in our Scot Lane therapy centre and wanted to dedicate her fundraiser head shave, to her friend Ann Holden who has just started her treatment having been diagnosed with cancer. Neece was also prepared for the event to be as public a spectacle as possible to raise as much money as she could for Aurora Wellbeing Centres the local cancer charity, so for Julie and Alex Calzini to offer to stage the event in Ziniz of Bawtry, on Saturday 7th February was an unbelievable offer which she couldn’t refuse At just after 2pm Neece said goodbye to her fabulous head of hair when Aurora hairdresser Charlotte and Elite stylist Emma got to work and shaved it all off. The atmosphere in Ziniz was unbelievable there were so many people there that moving around was almost impossible. Everyone gave so generously either simply donating money or bidding on some of the fabulous auction prizes that had been donated. The fund has reached over £4000 which is absolutely fantastic and with money still coming in Neece will be helping local people and their families to be supported at a time when they need it the most for some time with the proceeds from losing her hair. Dementia Peer Support Groups Talking about your worries and problems can be a very good way of releasing some of the stress that can build up when you’re a carer. Your family, friends and the medical and social work team can all listen to your concerns. But sometimes it’s best to talk to someone who knows exactly what you’re going through, because it’s happening to them too. Other carers can offer kindness, sympathy, understanding and advice, and they can make you feel less isolated. Anyone living with Dementia/Alzheimers, or, those who have concerns about their memory, are very welcome to come along to our dementia / alzheimers peer support groups. THIS GIRL CAN! A recent survey carried out by Sport England found there is a huge gender gap when it comes to sport and physical activity. Two million fewer women than men between the ages of 14 and 40 are physically active on a regular basis and yet 75% of women said they would like to be more active. So what’s stopping them? There were several factors identified as barriers to exercise including the usual suspects of time and cost. One of the strongest reasons that emerged, however, was the fear of being judged. Women were concerned about what they looked like during exercise and were worried that people would think they were ‘rubbish’. As a result, Sport England has launched a huge campaign aimed at getting women exercising. This campaign will show ‘real women’ exercising in a bid to change the inaccurate view that active females must be super-fit and look amazing in lycra. Headlines include – ‘sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox’ and my favourite clip shows someone cycling with the caption reading ‘I’m slow but I’m lapping everyone on the couch’. There’s a thought! So, come on ladies – let’s get hot and sweaty, let’s dance like no one is watching, let the jiggly bits jiggle and let’s exercise because we love our bodies not because we hate them! Misson & Springs WI We could not have had a better start to 2015! Our meeting on Wednesday 28th January must come high on our list of the best we’ve had, and those of us prevented by the snow from attending will be very sorry to have missed it. Jacqui Housely from Cherry-Cupcakes Doncaster gave a clear and expert demonstration on how to decorate cupcakes, making it look deceptively easy. Jacqui had been busy earlier in the day making four cupcakes for each of us to practice our newly-acquired skills and, as with every aspect of the evening, the cakes were beautifully and professionally presented in a box for us to take home, and all the equipment and materials we needed were ready for us. We were all thrilled with the results of our first attempts and I suspect that we shall be having Jacqui back at the earliest opportunity, as well as ordering cakes from her for any personal celebrations. Do look at her website cherry-cupcakes.co.uk and don’t hesitate to contact her at cherrycupcake@mail. com or leave her a message on 07515900842. Our meeting on Wednesday 25th February, will be less active when we shall welcome David Templeman, who will talk to us about Two Queens and a Countess, the relationships between Queen Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick. On Wednesday 25th March, Carol Bowser, from Winthrop Park, near Rotherham will continue our cake theme with The Story of Afternoon Tea. We welcomed two new guests in January and hope that you, too, will come and join us. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be made very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T

Lady Female 02/7/2014 10 months Lurcher ? ?

My name is Lady a very energetic girl as I am still very young. I need a strong pack leader to guide me. Socialization and training classes would help boost my confidence. I love playing and giving cuddles. A lovable girl that will need time and affection to be a happy lurcher. I have lived with teenagers before and I like to travel.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Tel: 01302 711330

Yet another stray who has fallen on hard times. Dolly was one of the lucky ones as she was taken in by a kind couple when she turned up in their garden looking very thin and sorry for herself.. Unfortunately she couldn’t stay and her rescuers contacted Mayflower for help. We are sure that she once had owners as she is extremely sociable but for whatever reason nobody has come forward to claim her. Dolly loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss! Please dont pass her by – give her the chance of a loving home again.

Name: Thomas Sex: Male Dec 2014 Date into care: 2 Years Age on arrival: RECOMMENDED WITH: Dogs: ? Cats: Yes Children: Older HAPPY TO LIVE AS A: Housecat: Possible Access outside: Yes Thomas came to Mayflower with his Mum after their owner had sadly died. Nobody in the family was able to offer them a place to stay so contacted Mayflower for help. Thomas is extremely sociable with other cats but can be a little nervous around people he doesn’t know well. A quiet home with no young children would suit him best. Especially if there was an existing sociable cat to pal up with. Although he has previously been outside, Thomas would adapt to being a housecat if necessary. Please give him a chance.

RECOMMENDED WITH: Dogs: No Cats: No Children: Yes HAPPY TO LIVE AS A: Housecat: Yes Access outside: Possible Hi.. My name is Charlie and I have come to Mayflower because my owners new partner is allergic to me. I was quite happy to share him but here I am! I have found life quite difficult here but I’m starting to settle in now. I love fusses, and especially tickles under my chin, but I have to get to know you a bit better first. Please stop and get to know me. I would love you to be part of my new family Charlie loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss!

Kia Female 27/9/2013 4 Beagle No ?

I am one of the carers favourite dogs as I have been at the sanctuary quite a while. I am an intelligent girl and I know all my commands. I love to play and need to be kept occupied and well exercised to be a very happy dog. I can jump quite high so will need very high fencing for my garden. Best suited to a home with experienced dog owners and people that will have plenty of time for me and in a one animal household. I travel well and have lived with teenagers.

Methodist Dear Friends,

Minister

By the time you will be reading this letter, we will be in lent already. Lent is when people decide to do away with some pleasures as a way of fasting. It is to prepare for the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland produces a bimonthly worship material with the title ‘Roots’. In April 2014, it published and distributed a free copy of ‘Roots’ with the title ‘A Generous Life’. I wonder if I can use a bible passage from Isaiah in that issue to remind you of some of the reasons why we fast in Lent. It comes in the form of a conversation between two people labelled as numbers 1 and 2. Below is the conversation: 1. Why do we fast, but God does not see? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to share your bread with the hungry? 1. Of course, I know what it is to feel hunger: when it happens I go into the nearest restaurant! 2. You serve your own interests on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. 1. I have the best interests of my work force at heart: I pay them the full amount of the minimum wage, so that my business can remain profitable and I can continue to employ them! 2. You fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting, as you do today, will not make your voice heard on high. 1. I’m always happy to discuss difficult issues with others, and if they find it hard to share my point of view, I shout louder! 1. Why do we humble ourselves, but God does not notice? Humility? You won’t find anyone more humble than me! 2. Is this the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? 1. I’ve always said that there should be equal rights: if some people choose to live in poverty, that’s up to them! 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 1. It’s true that I do have a couple of rooms in my house that I never use, but I need somewhere to keep all my possessions, don’t I? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to bring the homeless poor into your house? 1. When I see children looking so dirty, with the ragged clothes hanging off them, it really makes me appreciate the good quality clothes I’m able to buy. 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: when you see the poor naked, to cover them? 1. Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? 2. Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am! Have a blessed period of Lent. Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T 30

Young People in Misson plan for the future On a cold and damp Friday night 17 young residents started arriving promptly to have an input into Misson Neighbourhood Plan. They quickly organised themselves into 3 groups around the tables and commenced work by finding out from the groups what they understood about planning and how it could affect them and their environment. Natalie Cockrell Principal Community Planning Officer from Bassetlaw District Council described in general terms what planning was for, the Neighbourhood Plan and how their input could influence the future of the village. She asked them how old they would be in 20 years and what they thought their lives would be like, what they thought they would work at and where they wanted to live. They discussed the types of houses would suit different people and why. There was a high level of input from the young residents who had some very strong opinions. They liked the following about the village; • Peaceful and friendly nature of the village, the community spirit. • Clean and safe streets. • Like the amount of green in Misson, its rural nature.

Love Walking? Join the Ramblers Membership allows you to choose from hundreds of led walks all over the country every week.

The three most important things they believed should be included in the Neighbourhood Plan were; • Need more community facilities (things to do!) such as sports and play facilities. • Improve connectivity of Misson (transport and mobile/ broadband). • Need a local shop(s). The information collected is invaluable as it aids the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group in understanding what young people value about their community and what they would like to see change. This will also help the Plan makers to design policies that continue to nurture and protect the aspects of Misson that local people like, whilst planning for development that will address identified issues and enhance the town in a way that meets local needs. We are the only charity dedicated to looking after paths and green spaces.

Just as important was what they disliked - nothing much to do in the village, didn’t want to see fracking happen in the area and they didn’t like the Mushroom Farm because of the smell.

Anti-social Tenants

BEWARE Assault or threatening behaviour by tenants is, unfortunately, not rare and I have only just recently seen a landlord client who was assaulted by a tenant. Up until this change to the law, there was no straightforward way for a landlord to seek possession, even if their tenant had been convicted of a serious offence. IN SEARCH OF THE FALLEN THE LOST SOLDIER FROM MATTERSEY BDR EDGAR GLASBY SNR Over the last couple of years I spent many hours searching the many Commonwealth War graves Commission and Military websites for any information about Edgar Glasby without anything forthcoming. This last week I accidentally happened to make a breakthrough during my research. I found a piece of information that proved vital in locating him, on one military website I discovered that he was a long serving soldier in the Royal field Artillery. Throughout the present War and the years leading up to it Mattersey has been well represented in His Majesty’s Armed forces but no soldier from the village had surpassed or even equalled the excellent record of Bombardier Edgar Glasby, whose death occurred at his brothers residence in Mattersey. Here is his story:Edgar was born in 1874 and raised in Mattersey, where he lived all his young life and being educated in the Village School. He enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery on 28th December 1893 where, during his military career he served in India, followed by serving in South Africa during the Boar War. He received his South Africa Medal and Bars for the engagements at Johannesburg, Paardeburg, Belmont and the Modder River. It was at the Modder River on the 28th November 1899 that he was shot in the left Breast. The bullet passed all the way through his body just missing his heart but went straight through his lung, finally coming to rest in this Tunic at the back. In spite of this he remained a soldier and gained his Long Service and Good conduct Medal’s. At the outset of the Great War he was entitled to his discharge but instead he decided to remain in uniform and do what he could for his Country in its hour of need. During 1916 his old wound reasserted itself and although he stuck to his work for a long time suffering in silence. In the end he had to be sent to 2nd Eastern General Hospital, Hove, Brighton. He was eventually discharged “in consequence of being no longer physically fit for war service.” The character, he received from his Commanding Officer on leaving the colours read as, “Sober, honest and reliable, trustworthy, and in every way fitted for a position of trust.” The date of his discharge was 10th December 1916, if he had

been able to stay in service for another 17 days he would have completed 23 years service. From his first day of discharge he returned to his brother’s house which he had always made his home. From the outset it was plainly obvious that he was sinking fast. Good support and the best of attention kept him alive until the effects of the wound he received 17 years earlier proved too much for him and he succumbed barely ten weeks after his discharge on 22nd February 1917, he was 43 years of age. It was hoped that a Military funeral could be accorded him but as he was not in the Service at the time of his death the authorities could do nothing. The burial took place in Mattersey first the service was held in the Church followed by the actual burial in the cemetery on Thorpe Road. I’m so glad we have found him.

garden view

The greenhouse guide “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.” A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary. 44

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a predesignated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials. By Rachel Leverton

What’s The Best Job In The World? Perhaps one of the following:

Friday, 13th March 2015 St. Mary's Primary School

- Chocolate consultant. - Chief taster for the Campaign for Real Ale. - Water slide tester/ reviewer. - Luxury travel reviewer. Yes, these jobs do exist but to land one you would need to be very well experienced in the sphere or have a very close relationship with the right person. But I wonder how long the magic would last and how quickly the job would settle into the monotony and petty squabbles that every job experiences. How many 5 star hotels in the world’s most exotic settings could you take before it became boring? (I don’t know but I am willing to find out). Another dream job is to be the lead singer in a top Rock n Roll band – the glamour, the adulation and the eye-watering amounts of money all seem heavenly. This is despite the broken relationships, substance abuse and mental health issues that plague Rock n Roll. There is also extreme isolation; being unable to walk down the street or go for a meal without getting mobbed must be horrible. Paul Jones was a musician on the edge of fame when, in the early 1960’s a couple of friends asked him if he would be the lead singer in a band they were putting together; a bluesy rocky combo they were going to call The Rolling Stones. Paul turned the offer down as he was forming Manfred Mann. While Manfred Mann had big hits with “5,4,3,2,1” and “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” amongst others, they never came close to the stature of The Rolling Stones. You might be tempted to think; “I bet Paul Jones regrets turning Keith Richards down, talk about a dream job!” The reality is he doesn’t regret it at all. He says the money and fame he had in the mid 1960’s left him empty and unfulfilled, more fame or money would only have added to the lack of contentment. Paul Jones and his wife, West End actress Fiona Hendley, will be at the Phoenix Theatre on 3rd April where they will tell us their stories and how they ultimately found peace and purpose when they accepted Jesus Christ as being who he said was; that they now have something better than any “dream job”. Please see the advert elsewhere in this magazine for more information.

Bawtry Town Council - MARCH 2015

Crime in Bawtry Criminal damage to other vehicles 1; burglary dwelling 1; theft from motor vehicle 2. Anti-social behaviour 2 x parking complaints 1 x nuisance quads/ motorbikes

General The town council has purchased a Defibrillator which is sited in the Kitchen at the pavilion on the Memorial Sports Ground, as the site of most likely use. This along with a Defibrillator housed at the Crown Hotel will cover Bawtry for instances of heart failure which, of course, we hope will rarely happen. Following the recent three dimensional survey of land to the South and East of Bawtry the company who commissioned the survey has been in negotiations with land owners in the area. The result is that iGas have decided on a site to the North of Mission Spring Rocket site and have applied for a licence for exploration and the planning consent for such. The plan is to drill an exploration well to confirm the viability of 56

the site during 2016 and if viable to seek planning permission to run a production well in late 2016 and early 2017. Bawtry Town Council has representation on a Community Liaison Group of council members of parishes and towns within the area and is supportive of that group. Although we are assured that there will be no drilling or Fracking under or near Bawtry we are still concerned with the possible traffic movements through our town and will keep residents posted regarding this. There will be an information event provided by IGas at the Mayflower Inn, Austerfield on 3rd March 2015 from 3pm to 8pm. We will also lodge a document produced by iGas in Bawtry Community Library. This is a Scoping Environmental Impact document version 1 for discussion and development. Bawtry Town Council will keep you informed of these events. We, through the offices of Ward Cllr James Hart, have ensured that DMBC have made some progress to reducing the parking problems and obstructions in School Walk by introducing double yellow lines on one side of the road. Residents views to this are being sought for this. We will pursue similar actions for other areas where parking is a problem for residents.

Welcome to the first edition of the Austerfield Parish Council newsletter for 2015. Pensioners Christmas Lunch In December 2014 the Parish Council held the annual Christmas lunch for the pensioners within the village. If you would like more information regarding the Leger Bus service then please come along to the meeting or contact a member

of the Council who will raise the question on your behalf. Please check the website for further updates.
