Welcome to the May edition of BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY This month we are celebrating the 3rd birthday of BAWTRY TODAY. Yes it is 3 years since the first edition of BAWTRY TODAY was distributed. Since then the magazine has seen many changes. The increased number of advertisers, and contributors being the main change. The circulation of the magazine has also increased, starting 3 years ago at 2500 copies per month we now have 3250 printed and they are delivered to all the surrounding villages as well as to Bawtry. I would like to thank everyone who has supported the magazine, whether by advertising in it, contributing content or just as importantly reading it, and in particular telling the advertisers that you have seen their adverts. Without all of you there would be no magazine. I hope that you enjoy this month’s edition, and I very much hope that I can continue to bring you your community magazine for the next 3 years The next edition of BAWTRY TODAY will be delivered from 28th May. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 14th May.

Best Wishes, Paula

The Benefits of Exercise during Pregnancy By Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio

Louise from Tickhill asks: ‘How do I exercise during pregnancy?’ Regular, gentle exercise can be a great help during your pregnancy and the fitter you are the better you'll be at coping with the demands of a new born baby. Stretching and toning exercises such as Yoga and Pilates can help keep your body flexible and ready for labour. Plus, anything that gets your heart going is good for you and your baby's health as it pumps oxygen, blood and vital nutrients more efficiently around the body and to the womb. Unless you've been advised by your GP or midwife not to do any activity then it's a good idea to do something you enjoy. Of course, you have to be sensible and not push yourself too hard and keep away from those contact sports! Need running advice? www.metrestomiles.co.uk Tel 01427 872323 Need a Physio? Hot on your heels….

Just over a month ago the dreaded Achilles heel was on everyone’s lips as it ended David Beckham’s hopes of competing in what would surely be his final World Cup. Suffering an Achilles rupture, Beckham is ruled out of play for 3 months as he rehabilitates the injury. So, what predisposes someone to Achilles rupture? The Achilles is the largest tendon in the body. Withstanding loads of up to 12 times body weight, the Achilles is the strongest and most powerful tendon, yet incorrect footwear, poor training techniques, and muscle imbalances all contribute to its downfall. Achilles pain should never be over-looked. It is important to seek advice early as symptoms can be easily treated and a rupture may be prevented. Achilles tendinopathy is common in middle-aged athletes and those increasing their activity levels dramatically. Symptoms to look out for include stiffness within the tendon following activity, progressing to soreness first thing in the morning and a gradual onset of activity limiting pain. Treatment may include ice, anti-inflammatories, ultrasound and physiotherapy. Locating the cause of the problem is key to resolution.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary

Spring is well and truly with us and the sanctuary is bursting with colour. All the buds are out on the trees and the daffodils are looking pretty. Isn't it amazing when everything looks so different when the sun shines. Even the dogs look happier. We have recently had a member of the public bring an 8 month old puppy to us with very abnormal front legs which she is unable to walk on for more than a few steps. She is a beautiful girl called Belle. We are in the process of asking specialist vets to look at her and confirm whether anything can be done to help this lovely puppy. We will update you with this story next month. You will be able to see photos of her on the website shortly. We are in desperate need of more funds for the charity in order that we can help more dogs like Belle. Vets bills are always a constant worry and we will be making a special appeal for donations specifically for her. Last month I talked about Zena the Rotti who came to us when her 9 puppies were 1 day old. Well they are doing really well and she is a brilliant mum even though she is a young dog herself. We have been lucky enough to have a lady come forward to volunteer at our shop in Manton for 2/3 days this means that we can be open for most of the week which is a real bonus. So a big thank you and we hope you enjoy volunteering for us. A big thank you too for the other ladies that have kept the shop running throughout the winter months. Our fund raising events calendar is overflowing at the moment, so again we are looking for volunteers to help. Whether it is on stalls at some events, or rattling buckets on street corners, or if you are a good organiser maybe you could get even more involved. One fund raiser which we all love is the Mayflower Sanctuary Summer Ball which takes place at The Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor, on the 19th June tickets are ÂŁ35 each, its a fabulous venue with 4 course dinner and dancing and disco. Trax fm will be there too. Not forgetting the auction, there are some really wonderful prizes. Why not come along and support us we need to capitalise on this particular event and make it a night to remember. If you would like tickets please call me on 07840 203688 I will be happy to reserve them for you. Another event that must not be missed is The Staff Force Charity Day at Hayfield Lakes Finningley on the 6th June. This is a brilliant day out and will be supporting not only our Sanctuary but Help for Heroes and Phase Worldwide Charity. There will be a fishing match that will go on throughout the day, we will be organising a fun dog show. There is also football coaching for all you budding Beckhams. Vintage car show and Why not ask about our side stalls. There will be special guests from the specialist range of British Army / Ghurkhas and the Army logistic sports, post-op and team will be there setting up equipment on site for public viewing. Please come along for a good mastectomy bras. day out and join in the fun, all for a good cause. (don't forget to bring your dogs along and enter them into the dog show ) Larger Sizes There are numerous beautiful cats and dogs in always in stock our Sanctuary waiting for their forever loving homes. If you are looking for a pet please either call us or come for a look around our Sanctuary, Open Mon-Sat 9.30am-5pm we will be happy to help you make the right Contact Trish / Shell choice. You can take a dog into our paddock to customer advisors establish if you and your chosen dog get along. We will then carry out a home visit to check that your fence is of the correct height, and that you www.evelynsden.co.uk have chosen a suitable dog for your life style .We will look forward to seeing you soon. Westmoreland Court, Milne Road, Bircotes If anyone would like any further information on Wheelchair access. our Sanctuary please visit our website Parking for disabled www.mayflower sanctuary.com or call 01302 711330 or 07840 203688 we will be happy to help.

Anyone 4 Tennis?

Several years ago Bawtry had a thriving and successful Tennis Club. Sadly over recent years, due to the deterioration of the grass courts, the Club had to fold. Now we have a fantastic opportunity to have some brand new hard courts built to be situated at the Memorial Sports Ground in Bawtry. Under the proposed re-development of the Memorial Ground, plans have been drawn up to build a new pavilion with changing facilities for all the existing sporting clubs to use, an indoor sports hall and outdoor tennis courts. However to succeed in this venture we need your help. To obtain the relevant funding we have to establish how many people, of any age or playing ability, would use the tennis courts. We would therefore be most grateful if you would register your interest by either telephoning or e-mailing Anita or David Love on 01302 719169 or anita.love@tiscali.co.uk Please reply NOW! The possibility of playing tennis again in Bawtry lies in your hands!

No Cold Calling Zone The Tree Estate/Martin Lane/High Meadow Neighbourhood Watch, together with DMBC (through the Safer Neighbourhood Teams) & local police, have made the Tree Estate ONLY a No Cold Calling Zone for Commercial, Charity or Religious activities. Leaflet and Charity Bag deliveries are still allowed. We would like local business’s to be aware of this and that ignoring the clearly sighted signs will be followed up by Trading Standards and for repeat offenders the local Police. We hope that reputable firms will take note of the restrictions and in doing so make the rogues much more visible. We were impressed by the response of the Safer Neighbourhood Team in setting up the zone and also with the way Bawtry Town Council supported us with the cost of purchasing the 140 information packs for our residents and the 6 signs erected around the estate. Thanks to both for their support. As an organisation we fund ourselves by donations and an annual Plant & Cake Sale in May. This gives us sufficient funds for our needs and any excess is donated to Youth oriented activities within Bawtry. Last year we supported the Scouts, BARS, Bawtry Junior Football and Junior Cricket.

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre 15th to 22nd May - Blithe Spirit, a comic play by Noel Coward. The play concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomine (played by Phil Healing) who invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati (Jane Wheatley) to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira (Helen Shepherd), following the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles's marriage to his second wife, Ruth (played by Rebecca Fowler), who cannot see or hear the ghost. The seven strong cast is completed by Natalie Young in the role of Edith, Tony Abbott as Doctor Bradman, and Liz Atkinson as Mrs Bradman. Performances start at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available from the SPAR on Station Rd, Bawtry, priced £7 (£6 for concessions) and £12 for the buffet evening performance on Saturday 22nd.

Tickhill & District Lions We are proud to present the up and coming Gala Concert which has been organized by Lions International in association with The Free Press and is in aid of the Scan for Life Appeal for the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. This fantastic Gala Concert will take place at the Doncaster Minster on Thursday 6th May at 7pm. It will bring together the Sir Thomas Wharton School Choir with the Doncaster Concert Band and together they will perform a variety of music and songs including hits from the West End musicals. Tickets are £5. The Ticket Hotline is 01302 745339. Please support this very worthy cause. This month there’s also a note of congratulations for Doncaster Concert Band one of our members, Lion Don Bullock who has now been a member of Tickhill & District Lions for 25 years! By now there must be literally hundreds if not thousands of people out there who have benefitted from the hard work you’ve put in. So on their behalf, thanks for all your hard work so far Don. Another thank you this month for all our guests who attended our Sportsmen’s Dinner at Doncaster Golf Club on the 14th of April. It was a fundraising event to be proud of, even if we do say so ourselves. Our guest star speaker ex-England cricketer and England Test Selector Geoff Miller, was superb, and lived up to all our high expectations. And even our very own Choirs of Sir Thomas Wharton School President Phil Thomas couldn’t out do comedian & Dinnington School Josh Daniels, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying!

Tunnel Tech The new compost facility which was installed to reduce the environmental impact does not appear to have affected the frequency of the obnoxious smells which neighbouring communities have to suffer. It is important that Bassetlaw Council is made aware of these incidents. The officer to contact is: Principal Environmental Health Manager, Mr. Julian Proudman Tel. 01909 533171 email julianproudman@bassetlaw.gov.uk giving details of: · The date and time of the smell · Rate the smell on a scale of 1 to 10 , 10 being the most nauseous. · Brief weather information e.g. windy, rain, hot, cold, fog etc. Tunnel Tech should be monitoring environmental impact themselves and reporting to Bassetlaw. This should tie in with information Bassetlaw received as a result of complaints. It is therefore invaluable that Bassetlaw receives as much information as possible. If you wish to inform Tunnel Tech that you are contacting Bassetlaw with complaints, email simon.middlebrook@tunneltechnorth.co.uk or tel: 01302 719532 Car Crime We have been advised by the police that there has been an increased incidence of car crime in Bawtry, chiefly theft from motor vehicles parked outside peoples' homes. We have been reminded just how important it is to make sure nothing is visible through the car windows and that in particular sat-navs should be removed from the window and any marks left should be wiped away.
