Finally, the winter is behind us, and, after spring has been delayed, experts are now suggesting that we should get outdoors and enjoy our gardens and local outside spaces and look out for a riot of colourful plants and shrubs all flowering at once, during a shortened spring period. Apparently by midMay we will move into summer – but I will believe that only when it happens! As the months fly by we once again enter the final term of the school year and move into exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard this May. We have a year of respite this year! No major exams and no dreading the August results day! The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th May. June is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to get the details to me in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Thank you. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.
Best wishes,
Paula x

Why you’re NEVER too old to take up yoga. As a yoga teacher in my 66th year, (where on earth did that time go?!), I’ve become even more aware that if I want to keep being able to do all the things I want to do – I need to look after my health. The reality is that for many of us as we age, we not only move less than perhaps we should, but years of poor posture, less than healthy eating habits and the onset of conditions such as arthritis, diabetes or blood pressure to name but a few, start to take their toll. I read somewhere recently – that we humans are living longer – but living sicker. But what is the point of adding another decade to our life span if that life is riddled with pain or health challenges which prevent us from actually living? I know there are some things life throws at us we simply cannot control or predict. But, almost every doctor you speak to, or article you read, or TV programme you watch (and there are plenty these days on TV telling us how to stay younger!) all these sources seem to agree on one thing: our lifestyle has a dramatic impact on how we age. You don’t need me to tell you how important H[HUFLVH LV %XW ÂżQGLQJ WKH ULJKW NLQG RI exercise which will support your health and yet be enjoyable enough for you to actually keep it up is not always easy. Yoga encourages you to actually become more aware of your body – and if you’re in the right kind of class, which doesn’t go too fast, gives you time to understand some basic safety principles, you can adjust either deeper into a stretch or pull back – so you get just the right level of challenge for your body. For so many other types of exercise, we are still attached to our phones, watching TV screens or our mind is completely elsewhere - and we don’t realise we’ve done too much till it’s too late. Hi from Mayflower Hopefully the weather will now start to pick up and we can all enjoy the sunshine at long last. I’m going to concentrate on events in this issue and hope you all can at least get to a couple of them to help fill our coffers on all of the events we have planned. Carolyn is arranging another table top sale on the 29the April. There will be lots of bargains to be had so come up to the Sanctuary and enjoy coffee and cake and a good rummage around. She is hoping that this is going to be an ongoing event at the end of every month. If you have any good quality unwanted gifts etc we will be happy if you would donate them to us for her table top sale. We still have a few tickets left for the ball at the Crown on the 18th May. So, if you want to dust off that DJ and ball gown come and join us. Drink on arrival, 3 course meal and coffee. Live auction and raffle. Guitarist Lee Madison will be on hand to play through dinner, then everyone can have fun doing their own thing on the dance floor to the resident DJ and disco. Eastside Magazine will be taking photos and doing a write up on the evening. Tickets are £45 call 07969203206 if you would like to join us. The 13th May sees us in Bawtry Forest on our sponsored dog walk. This starts at 11am and is a truly fantastic event. We love to see all of our dogs that have been adopted coming to join us. You don’t have to have a rescue dog everyone is welcome. There will be coffee and cakes to buy after the walk. We will look forward to seeing you there.
Name: Tabitha Male Sex: Age: 8 years Came into care: Feb 2018 Good with dogs: No Good with cats: Not tested Good with children: Older
Finding a forever home On Sunday the 1st July we have our annual dog show in Tickhill at Tithes Lane. Again, this starts at 11 am, there are lots of stalls and a BBQ. Also, lots of prizes for waggiest tail, kindest eyes, best in show and lots more. So, bring a rug and enjoy a picnic, we will all keep our fingers crossed for sunshine. Last but not least a thank you to Eaton Electrical systems Ltd. Wheatley Hall Road. Doncaster. They donated lots of goodies, toys food, blankets, towels, and so much more, together with a £600 cheque. Amazing people a huge thank you. Please try and join us for some of our events it will be super to see you. If you are looking for that special pet to join your life please pop to see us at Narrow Lane Bawtry. 01302 711330

Tabitha has come into care with her buddy, Elphaba, as unfortunately they weren’t getting along with the new baby in the household. They were both rehomed from Mayflower several years ago but have had to be returned. Tabitha has settled better than Elphaba and is usually happy to greet visitors for fusses. She can be very vocal when the mood takes her and purrs like a tractor. A home with Elphaba would be perfect but not essential if the right home came along seperately. Tabitha would be happy in a home with children providing they give her space and time to settle around them. She hasn’t met dogs so we are unsure how she would react. Could you offer this little lady that 2nd chance she deserves?
Name: Louie Male Sex: Age: 18 Months Came into care: June 2017 Good with dogs: Some Good with cats: Not tested Good with children: 14+ Louie loves to go out on adventures and is very good to walk - he happily trots along without a care in the world. He took a while to come out of his shell, but once he trusts you he loves attention and will gladly sit wiht you all day. Due to his nervous nature in the past we are suggesting older children only and a family who will give him time to get to know you. He has a sweet nature and will be a great companion. He tries to be clean in his kennel and once he has a routine this will not be a problem.

Gut” April has been Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) awareness month. IBS is the name given to a collection of bowel symptoms including bloating, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhoea. IBS affects approximately 1020% of us at any one time.
vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds.
There are some things we can all do to improve our gut health including drinking plenty of fluid and eating fibre.
Adult men should be drinking 2000ml per day and women 1600ml per day.
Fibre is an essential nutrient which adds bulk to your stools and allows your gut to function normally. It also has protective properties, if you eat plenty of fibre you are at a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and bowel cancer. The recommended daily intake of Fibre for adults and adolescents is 30g. For children the recommended intake changes as they grow; 2-5 year olds it’s 15g, 5-11 year olds it’s 20g and 11-16 year olds it’s 25g.
drinks all count as fluid. Try to avoid high sugar drinks and alcohol.
If you are planning to increase the fibre in your diet remember to do this gradually to allow your gut to adjust and drink plenty of fluid.

Bawtry Town Council - May 2018 Taxi Rank
Litter Pick
With the recent support of the Mayor, Doncaster Council have now agreed to assist Bawtry Town Council in providing a late-night taxi rank on Market Hill. The town has a vibrant night life but has not been able to offer adequate facilities to ensure those visiting the town can get home promptly at the end of an evening. The Town Council believe a taxi rank will be a great benefit to Bawtry, and although there are a number of procedural steps to complete first, members hope a rank will now become a reality in the near future.
After the very successful recent litter pick in Bawtry, Ward Councillors Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper have decided to arrange a monthly litter pick starting on the 5th May from 10am – 12pm (meeting in the car park at Kingswood) and thereafter on the first Saturday of every month. The litter pick will initially cover Doncaster Road and Great North Road with equipment being provided to any volunteers. Anyone who feels an area is in need of attention can also contact Rachael Blake on 07976896563 and ask for it to be added to the list.
High Street Bus Shelter The Town Council has for some time considered funding for a bus shelter on the High Street. The transport authority (SYPTE), who normally provide shelters, have a significant waiting list and are unlikely to be in a financial position to provide a shelter, even in the long term. A number of options have been considered but unfortunately funding via the transport authority has proved cost prohibitive, being in excess of £10,000. Although the Council could fund and install its own shelter (subject to necessary consents), this would still result in a significant outlay together with ongoing liabilities for maintenance which members do not feel able to commit to at this time.
Neighbourhood Plan
Boundary Signs The Council has obtained planning permission for ornate sponsorship plaques to be available on the new town boundary signs. Any business or organisation who wants to advertise on one of the available plaques should contact the Clerk to the Council. Current rates are £500 per annum which includes the supply and fitting of the plaque with the sponsors details or £1000 for three years. The next Council meeting is the Annual Meeting on Tuesday 8th May at 7.30pm It will be preceded by the Annual Parish Meeting at 7pm Residents & Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings. There is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council. Please come along & get involved.
The formal Regulation 14 Public Consultation on the Bawtry Draft Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) is now underway. The consultation period runs until 5pm on Monday 21st May 2018. The plan and other supporting documents can be viewed and downloaded from the Neighbourhood Plan website: www.bawtryneighbourhoodplan. org.uk Hard copy of the Plan can be viewed at Bawtry Library at normal opening times – Monday to Friday 9:15 am to 6:00 pm & Saturday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. A representation form is available for comments, but the Town Council also welcomes comments by email or in writing to the Town Clerk. 54 BAWTRY TODAY

Update from Councillors
Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper
Your DMBC Councillors As I write this the first warm days of spring are expected so I hope that we are not going to be disappointed. Mick and I have been involved in lots of different activities this month and we have provided details of some of them below. Litter pick – now going to be held monthly – please come and join us Residents have been very appreciative of the work done by volunteers who took part in the 1st community litter pick held in April. The majority of the volunteers came from the Plymouth Brethren Church who make up RRT and come from across Doncaster and they were joined by Bawtry residents, myself and with fantastic support from Doncaster Council’s Street Scene team. Between us we made a big difference in a couple of hours and therefore we have decided to hold these monthly on the first Saturday of every month from 10am – 12pm starting on 5 May. For the May one we will meet at Kingswood car park and complete the litter pick up to Yorkshire Caravans. Each month we will cover a different area so please do let me know if there are particular areas you feel we should tackle – anywhere in Bawtry and Austerfield. We will be supported again by the Street Scene Team but if we can get lots of volunteers then we can make a huge difference and make the approach into Bawtry look fantastic. Smoke One of the companies that was causing the smoke problems on the industrial estate has now re-located but for a number of residents they are still experiencing problems which are having a big impact on their lives. I am meeting with Environmental Health at Doncaster Council on a weekly basis to ensure that all statutory powers that they have are being deployed to ensure that residents do not have to suffer these smoke problems – in addition I am keeping in touch with residents regularly so if you would like to be kept informed about developments please do contact me. Heritage board for Market Hill A huge thank you to Bawtry Town Council from the Bawtry Heritage Group who have agreed to fund the siting of a heritage information board on Market Hill. Many residents have told us that they are not aware of Bawtry’s heritage and having the board will start to inform residents and visitors. This is just the start for the group as we prepare for millions of visitors, many from the US who are expected to visit the ward in 2020 for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers arriving in the USA. The group welcomes everyone who has an interest in heritage – please contact myself or Margaret at the library for further details. Doncaster Events - Tour de Yorkshire and Doncaster Food Festival Tour de Yorkshire comes to Doncaster again on 3 and 4 May. The cyclists won’t be passing through Bawtry or Austerfield this year but will be going through Auckley and 60 BAWTRY TODAY
both races will be finishing on Bennetthorpe where there are events taking place as well as the excitement of seeing the end of the race. Also at Doncaster Market from 4-7 May, the Delicious Doncaster Festival is being held – a fantastic Festival with something for everyone as well as guest appearances by the Hairy Bikers. Kingswood Car Park I have received an update on the car park and the pot holes. They will be repaired once the water has drained but it is going to be patched rather than a full repair due to not having the funding available. School Walk A revised Traffic Regulation Order proposal has been issued for School Walk. There was a problem with the last one which has now been rectified and the proposed yellow lines now displayed on the correct side and the wording reflecting this. Pemberton Grove As I walk past Pemberton Grove nearly every day, I notice that there are still a few cars that are parking on the yellow lines or parking on the pavement completely which is still an offence and can incur a fine. The Council’s enforcement team to visit the area and other areas throughout Bawtry on a regular basis so fines are being issued. Big Get Together I am hoping to organise something for the Big Get Together in June organised by Jo Cox’s family in her memory. It is just at the planning stage so if you would like to be involved do please get in touch. Surgery Bawtry Community Library Coffee Morning – from 10am – 12 on 11 May – but please do not wait for the surgery – get in touch anytime. Rachael Tel: 07976896563 Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Mick Tel: 07758089737 Email: mick.cooper@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading this and for your continued support. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if we can be of any assistance. We are happy to visit you at home if it is easier than coming to our surgery. Kindest regards
