Actually it’s the bees that need your help. The Asian Hornet has arrived in the UK. It was first spotted here in 2016, and it poses yet another threat to the Honey Bee population. It is extremely aggressive. Worse by far than our native hornet which is not a quarrelsome creature and actually less aggressive than our native wasps. The Asian Hornet ( Vespa velutina) has an unpleasant habit of hanging out at the entrance of a bee hive and as the workers emerge to go out foraging, it bites off their heads. It’s about twice the size of a bee. A small group of these hornets could destroy a hive of bees in a few hours, and then go in and help themselves to the honey. Apart from the sheer nastiness of this behaviour, the threat to the bee population will have a knock-on effect to the pollination of our food crops. Action is needed and DEFRA are set to eradicate this creature in the UK. So here are the distinctive features to look out for: It is about 20mm in length. It has a yellow segment on its abdomen which is mostly black/brown. On that yellow segment is a black triangular mark. It has long yellow socks on all its legs, and an orange face. If you see one please notify the Great British Non Native Species Secretariat immediately by email – alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk and if are able to photograph it, please do so and send a photo too.

The Annual Meeting is an essential part of belonging to a national organisation, but we do try to ensure that it is not too long-winded and full of esoteric points of order. Our review of the previous year, financial reckoning and re-election of our president, Jo Phillips, was the prelude to another convivial evening in Misson Community Centre. We know what we like, and are not afraid to go with the tried and tested, and so it was that we followed the business meeting with a recipe swap - but more importantly, we did not just exchange recipes but sampled the dishes that members had brought for us all to try. What we have discovered over the years, is that we are not just jam and cake aficionados and we ensure that we have a good mix of savoury and sweet recipes. Replete and with glass or cup in hand, we repaired for the final half hour to play our own version of Beetle, which someone won - but it’s the playing, not the winning that counts in Misson. In April, we welcome David Bell aka The Plague Doctor of Eyam, a visit postponed from February last year. Our May meeting strikes a gentler note when Victoria Howard, a member of the Romantic Novelists Association will give us a tongue-incheek look at romantic heroes past and present in a talk entitled I Need a Hero. She comes very highly recommended and we do urge you to come along and join us - to quote W B Yeats

– our annual Fun Dog Show takes place again in Sandall Park on Saturday 15th June. Registration opens at 10.30am. It promises to be a great occasion for all the family, with a fun Dog Show, craft stalls, face painting, food and refreshments and a special appearance by local flyball team the Doncaster Bellestars. The Dog Show will be taking on the dog-friendly Old Golf Course in Sandall Park, Doncaster. It is the perfect location for all the family and your dog will be able to showcase their talents in our fun classes including: • Waggiest Tail • Best Junior Handler • Agility Course The show begins at 1.30pm and finishes at 4.00pm with a raffle. All proceeds from the Dog Show go towards supporting the work of the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre. Entry to the Dog Show is £2.50 per class/£7.00 for three classes. Last year, the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre re-homed over 890 animals. Our mission is to rehabilitate and re-home vulnerable animals and this rehabilitation and re-homing work relies on kind donations from the public. Proceeds from events that the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre organises, provide the necessary funding so that the vital work can continue.

DONCASTER MUSEUMS T The Friends of Doncaster Museums were pleased to receive notiﬁcation that their bid for support from Tesco had been successful.

This is down to the 'blue tokens' which customers allocated to us in Tesco stores across Doncaster in January and February. The 'Bags of Help' Scheme gives local community organisations the opportunity to raise money for projects which can make a difference in their communities. Our project you may remember was focussed on the imminent 50th Anniversary of the first moon landing. We wanted to celebrate this amazing milestone with a series of events which will enable people of all ages to either discover or rediscover the wonders of science. With the grant from Tesco’s, we will be funding a number of science activities over coming months. These will include siting a mobile planetarium at the museum on several occasions and some 'rocket' workshops. We also feel it is important to remember that our own home, Planet Earth, still has many wonders to be discovered and so we'll also be organising several animals handling sessions, featuring snakes and tarantulas to name only two species. All these events will be advertised widely; some will be pre-bookable. All will be fun! We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us; thanks to you we can offer these events free of charge!

The North Notts Local Group of the Wildlife Trust has completed another very successful series of lectures over the winter months. A wide range of subjects has been covered by speakers who are all experts in their ﬁeld. Topics included fracking, photomicrography, urban ecology, British moths and butterﬂies and developments at Sherwood Forest with the RSPB.

You may think, as I did, that litter is not really a problem in our small town; after all, it’s not really the sort of place where you might expect to find piles of rubbish accumulating. Having gone out a few times with the team, I have been surprised to learn just how much there is once you start looking for it. The approaches to the town always have a string of empty bottles and cans along them, apparently being thrown out of car windows as people arrive or leave; there are a few sites favoured by fly-tippers; sweet wrappers and cigarette butts are absolutely everywhere. We also find lots of other things including scraps of carpet, clothing and even lumps that have fallen off cars. After 8 or so people have spent an hour scouring the verges and hedgerows there is always an impressive pile of filled bags for the council workers to collect; and we all go home feeling pleased that we have made a small difference – perhaps even a little smug. It is very easy to feel slightly superior picking up other people’s crisp packets and dirty nappies (yes, really) but we I need to remember what they about say people in glass houses throwing stones. As a committed Christian, I am always wanting to act, speak and think in a clean, not-littering, way. The moral code which Christians aspire to live by is pretty stringent and I constantly find myself committing the same offenses over and over again. Sometimes it’s just too easy to not quite tell the truth, to think ill of someone or to be jealous of other people; and the “litter” starts accumulating at the edges of my life. One of the most precious aspects of Christianity is the promise that every time we say sorry to God for offending Him or other people, He promises to forgive us and we can start again; clean. However, just like the cigarette packets down, say, the Gainsborough Road, the litter soon starts accumulating afresh and God has to get His black bag out again. I’m sure that not only do we all not want to live in a town that is blighted by litter, but most of us also want to be clean, positive and encouraging in all our relationships. If you would like to help with the former, then please join us on the first Saturday of every month; if you would like help with the latter, then pop along to church on any Sunday and join us trying to keep litter-free on a personal level.

VILLAGES PREPARING FOR THE ANNUAL INVASION The villages of Ranskill and Torworth are once again preparing for the annual invasion of Scarecrows The event takes place over the weekend of June 8th in Ranskill and June 9th in Torworth with around 100 scarecrows expected to be on display around the two villages. There is a full programme of events planned and entry is free on both days.

This time I want to talk about vision, folks. Now, you all know my vision is excellent. Far seeing, attention to detail, good ol' all round vision. Oh, yes, that's me. And I thought you were a superior race but I'm in shock. At The Westminster Forum in April, IGas gave their vision. It is everything I have been warning you about. Here it is: 4 fracking pads in this area; 10 wells per pad; a total of 40 wells. On top of that their vision is to drill back to back. Time to act against an industrial nightmare, I think. Let those numbers sink in. I've done more adding up for you. Traﬃc movement locally has increased with drilling at the Misson Springs site. Just in the last 4 weeks local monitors logged 835 movements including 274 HGVs, 362 cars, 176 vans and 16 minibuses. Not good. So, another 3 pads means 3 times these ﬁgures...and more. For 40 years. Where will the 3 extra pads be constructed? Bawtry and surrounding village communities you need to be on red alert. Terence Bennett Three cheers for the Crucible and for its production of Standing at the Sky’s Edge, the musical about the Park Hill Flats, following three generations who lived there, charting changing times and cultures, with plenty of wonderful music and Sheffield humour. Artist returns after 50 years! TERENCE BENNET: A RETROSPECTIVE exhibition of paintings and drawings by this Doncaster artist. In September 1967 Terence Bennett became the first artist to hold a one-person exhibition at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Now, over 50 years later, as the Museum prepares to move to its new site at the top of Chequer Road, he is to become the last artist to have a one- person display at the gallery. The large-scale exhibition brings together paintings and drawings produced over a 60 year period, from student works created at Doncaster School of Art in the 1950s, to a series of glowing watercolours fresh off the easel. Terence was born in Doncaster in 1935, the son of a painter and decorator. He knew from an early age that he wanted to paint, and in 1951, at the age of 15, he enrolled at the Doncaster School of Arts

and Crafts, where he was taught by T.A Anderson, Eric Platt and Jack Camm. After completing his National Service he taught art at Doncaster High School, while continuing to paint and exhibit locally. As his work developed he became known for his Yorkshire scenes, including images of the mining landscape and costal places such as Spurn Point. In 1973 Terence was awarded the Yorkshire Television Fine Art Fellowship, and over that year produced around 70 works, all depicting the Yorkshire region, some of those paintings are now in the collection of the Bank of England. Throughout his life Terrence has continued to paint, and he has been recognised by inclusion in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London for a number of years, as well as holding many one- person exhibitions in London and across the country. Change to Divorce Law Changes to Divorce law will be made as soon as parliamentary time becomes available according to the justice secretary. This will be the biggest change in divorce law in 50 years. At the moment one party has to allege unreasonable behaviour or adultery if they have not been separated for two or five years. The new legislation would mean only having to assert that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without having to attribute blame or wait for at least two years. There will be a six-month period for reflection before the Decree Absolute is granted. The aim of the overhaul is to reduce conflict

between divorcing spouses. David Gauke who announced the changes said “While we will always uphold the institution of marriage, it cannot be right that our outdated law creates or increases conflict between divorcing couples. So, I have listened to calls for reform and firmly believe now is the right time to end this unnecessary blame game for good”

These changes in divorce law have taken many years to be approved and will be welcomed by divorcing couples and family lawyers once introduced. It is to be hoped that parliamentary time is made available in the near future and the long-awaited changes are finally implemented

It will also be possible in the future for there to be a joint application for a divorce. BAWTRY GARDEN CLUB

The speaker at our April meeting was Dr Dave Newman who gave a talk on Small Scale Vegetable Production. He started by telling us about the SAGE GARDENER community organisation and gardens between Lincoln and Newark, which he is involved with, where a variety of gardening and environmental activities are held, many for health beneﬁt. This includes growing fruit and veg, using all manner of things as containers. Dave gave us lots of creative ideas for items that could be recycled and used for growing fruit and veg at home. He also provided much useful information on related pest and disease control. Our next meeting is on 7th May, at 7:00 pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Bawtry as normal. Our speaker then will be John Moss who will be talking about Old Tools (Woodcraft). Guests are always welcome. Just before that, on 1st May will be our trip to Reighton Nurseries near Filey for which there are still some places available if anyone wants to join us. Down in the Valley! Tickhill’s ‘best kept secret’ if you like garden machinery...

orne Valley is a bit of a hidden gem in the garden machine business, located on Bawtry Road, Tickhill. It’s a family run business, managed by Chris Chambers. It’s the kind of store where you will always walk out with a purchase even if you just go in for a browse! Stocking garden and horticultural supplies their brands include Viking, Stihl, Husqvarna, John Deere, Atco, Countax and other quality manufacturers, “we only stock quality brands” says Chris, “cheaper brands really aren’t worth stocking in the long run, as we have learned from our experience”. “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Gardening should be pleasurable and not frustrating because machinery won’t start.” Torne Valley have three branches and is independently owned. The Bakewell store is located on Haddon Road, next to the petrol station, Epworth on Station Road and head office here at Tickhill in Doncaster, which has a heavy farming influence. Each branch tailors its products to fit the geology of the area in which it is based, Tickhill sell a lot of machinery for both small and large gardens alike. “Customers are always surprised at the range of over 30,000 products lines we stock” Chris explains. “Apart from the garden machines and ride-ons we have a range of hand tools and hardware, garden products, animal feed and products, horse tack, even kids mini tractors trailers and cars! It really is a huge range, but machinery is where we excel.” The range of products include lawnmowers, garden strimmers, brush cutters, a full range of hedge trimmers plus a huge selection of leading edge rechargeable lithium iron products which are light

weight. “The Stihl products really are a pleasure to use” adds Chris, “easy to handle, start at the flick of a switch, quiet and great for the environment. We presently have rechargeable Stihl strimmers at £99, which are very popular, we really can’t get enough of them.” “The same is true of the Stihl MS180 chainsaw, this 31.8cc 14” petrol chainsaw retails at £250 but we’re doing them at £189 and, again, they are selling really well. Whether it’s garden maintenance or cutting up logs for the burner these are a great machine!” At Torne Valley, they spend a great deal of time and effort to ensure they price stock competitively. “We are careful when buying stock, the size of the business enables us to bulk purchase during the off season when we can really push to obtain good prices. This enables us to pass these savings on” says Chris. “As Spring hits us and the garden bursts into life it’s time to get the old garden tools out and if you’re thinking of replacing them please give us a call. “At Torne Valley we’ll listen to your needs and recommend the right machine for you, we’ll then demo it and once you’ve decided on what you want we’ll set it up and run it so you’re really familiar with it. Hello Everyone, Welcome to our fifth write up of the year. How time does fly. However, we are still longingly awaiting those lovely warm sunny days, I personally can’t wait to walk my dogs without being completely muffled up in coats and scarves. I would like to say a big thank you to the other people that have advertised our Mayflower Ball for us, Gazette Newspaper, Eastside Magazine and Don Gill. This has resulted in all of the tables being sold which is a fantastic result. Everyone is so excited about this event and can’t wait for an amazing evening. We unfortunately had to cancel our Table Top sale in the Scout Head Quarters in Tickhill, through lack of interest in table bookings. However, on Sunday the 7th April our Table Top sale at the Sanctuary had an incredible morning and raised more money than they had previously done. This event takes place at the Sanctuary on the 1st Sunday in the month, so please go along and support them. We are holding our usual Sponsored dog walk in Bawtry Wood which is down Martin Lane in Bawtry and starts at 11.00 am. This is an annual event and it is so lovely to see lots of dogs that have been rehomed looking healthy, fit and happy with their new owners. This is one of my favourite events and we just

hope the weather is kind to us. There will also be home-made cakes, coffee and tea available. We have a long term dog in our Sanctuary and we desperately looking for that forever home for him. His name is Gouldie, he is 4 years old and quite an energetic boy. He has been with us 2 years so desperately needs to be in a forever home. He enjoys lots of attention and loves long walks with his carers. Gouldie would be more suited to a home without children also other dogs and cats, he initially had a problem making friends with other dogs, however his carers have been working with him and he is getting much more sociable. He is a very clean boy and also well mannered. If anyone out there can find it in their hearts to come along and check him out, maybe take him for a walk or simply have a play in our paddock that would be amazing.

We had a very good turn out for our March meeting on how to tie scarves and sarongs. It was the second time style consultant Sue Burton had been to visit us, her earlier session on colour had been very well received – as was her latest talk. She showed us various ideas on how to use different shaped scarves giving us time to try them out on ourselves and each other. The room was full of laughter and chatter as we experimented with them. She had also bought a huge variety of different scarves and sarongs which made a great display in the room. We learned how the wearing of sarongs was popularised by the film star Dorothy Labour – with the word ‘sarong’ meaning ‘covering’ in Malay. The use of different fabrics – silk and more modern polyester mixes allows for crease free, flowing elegant and generally vibrant coloured sarongs to be worn as dresses, skirts and general ‘cover ups’ on holiday. Sue even showed us how to use our sarong to make a bag to carry the shopping from the supermarket in! Next month we will be hearing how local romantic author Victoria Howard sources the heroes for her novels, which sounds another fascinating topic. We will also be discussing and voting on which resolution we would like to go forward to the WI Annual Meeting in June. We have two very diverse options being presented- ‘Don’t fear the smear’ aiming to encourage women to attend routine smear testing and ‘A call against the decline of local bus services’. I am sure there will be some lively discussion as both are such important issues. Our May meeting will be held on Wednesday the 15th 7.15 at the New Hall in Bawtry. Our topic will be ‘The Star Man’, a talk on black holes by Dennis Ashton. New members and visitors are always welcome. Please contact our secretary Roberta Eales on 07840729545.

The Connect Club has had its ﬁrst meeting with 7 members of Bawtry coming to join in the fun. PROBUS meets in the splendidly refurbished THE CLUB - on Northgate (previously known as The Tavern). Probus offers a chance to chat with friends before a stimulating talk from a visiting speaker after which there are opportunities to have a drink or perhaps some lunch together. Meetings now start at 11.30 with doors open at about 11.10. In last month’s article we mentioned that we would be holding our 3rd Annual Club Championships – well what an event that was! This is a Club-only event and is a great opportunity for all our swimmers, including the under-9s, to compete in a friendly atmosphere. The under-9s swam in 25m and 50m races and the 9s-and-overs swam in 50m and 100m races. Their times in each event were converted to FINA points which are used to ascertain the overall top prizes. The winners of the age categories and the Coaches special awards have not yet been announced – these are kept under close wraps until our Presentation Evening in early May where we celebrate all of our swimmers’ successes over the previous year, along with a generous helping of food, drinks, speeches, and music. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those volunteers who stepped in to help us run the Championships, a big “Thank you” to the Coaching team for their continual support of the swimmers week in and week out, and of course a “Thank you” to our Sponsors. The following weekend we took 24 of our swimmers to Mansfield Swimming Club’s Acorns meet. This was the first time we have attended this meet, and in an unfamiliar set-up, we still managed to perform fantastically well, taking part in 109 events, and bringing back 4 medals (well done to Emily, Jake and Leon) and 69 personal bests – some of which were obtained as an improvement on swimming times from an event only 5 weeks previously. Next on our swimming calendar is the Rotherham Metro meet at Ponds Forge where we will be taking our swimmers to participate in 2 days of racing. It’s a long weekend (and for anybody who has spectated at swimming events, they will know how hot it can get at the side of a competition pool!), but it is well worth it and we will report back on the outcomes of that in next month’s article. Scaling the Walls What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena

Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upsidedown terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers. Happy gardening!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING This took place on Wednesday 20th March and was very well attended, wine and nibbles were on oﬀer which were very much appreciated and made for a pleasant evening. Thank you to all who came along, your support is appreciated. We thank and appreciate outgoing Chair David Hobson for his hard work during his two year tenure whilst still working full time. David has helped to initiate various projects at our community centre including a newly reburbished and decorated hall, small room and foyer, new lighting, and many other ideas and projects that have come to fruition over the last couple of years. We welcome new Chair Dr Mandy Walker who will have taken over at the April monthly meeting, and is sure to be a driving force with good ideas for future events and projects. A warm welcome also awaits several new committee members.

Bawtry residents group T

At the last Bawtry residents group meeting that took place on the 28th of March at the Crown hotel. Residents heard from two South Yorkshire Police Officers with responsibilities for the Bawtry area. The two officers’ Sergeant Liam Walters and PC John Yorke informed the residents of ongoing situations in and around our area, he added that the crime figures for Bawtry are worrying but other villages/ town’s in the area have far greater figures. The two highest reported crime related incidents in Bawtry were said to be shoplifting and burglary which had four incidents each followed by anti-social with three reported incidents, he reassured the attendees that anything reported through the 101 service would be investigated. Several people attending complained regarding the service from the 101-call centre, the officers advised that if the incident was of “a serious matter” residents should use the 999 service as the response would be quicker.

Also speaking at the meeting was Mr Jerry Cooke, Jerry is the Bawtry coordinator for the Neighbourhood Watch, again Jerry informed the group of criminal activities that have occurred in Bawtry, sadly to say that most of the incidents happen on the Green Park and the Tree estate. The watch is always looking for more residents to join the scheme especially from the north and east side of Bawtry, please contact Jerry by email:bedford@btconnect.com, he will more than happy to chat/liaise with any residents who may wish to get involved with the scheme. We have been informed that discussions are continuing with regard to getting a permanent Post Office in Bawtry, a meeting was held between Cllr Alan Claypole and Caroline Flint MP regarding this please see the following link. http://www. carolineflint.org/bawtry_post_ office_next_steps Cllr A Claypole has confirmed to the BRG, that the bench adjacent to the library will be replaced along with the commemorative plaque shortly. Good news coming from the Timber Joint, Richard Ludlam ever present at the shop for the past 25 years is the new proprietor, we at the BRG wish Richard all success for now and for the future.

The recently launched Bawtry Polo Club in Misson Springs attained their 5 Star Riding School Licence last week - the highest rating possible. It’s a particularly impressive achievement, following changes to the licensing structure last year (making it more stringent) and with fledgling businesses typically not exceeding 4 Stars in their first year due to lack of historical inspections. Ponies health, soundness and condition as well as tack, environment and horse and rider safety are inspected by both an independent vet and Environmental Health officers and all are considered during the licensing process. Bawtry Polo Club intend to offer polo lessons and coaching for all levels of player and rider. South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir T In October 1925 the Doncaster County Borough Police formed a Male Voice Choir to perform at the Doncaster Grand Theatre in order to raise money to buy boots for the less well-oﬀ children in the Borough.

Over time the choir's name changed due to force amalgamations and today the choir is known as The South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir, probably the oldest police male voice choir in the UK (94 yrs) with the same charitable ethos. Many concerts both home and abroad have been performed in front of many people and on Saturday 1st June 2019 at Hall Cross Lower Academy School at 7pm the choir will be in concert with guests The Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra, compare is BBC Look North Presenter Phil Bodmer.

Bawtry Town Council - May 2019 NEW HALL Plans are still underway for the Council to commence management of the New Hall upon expiry of the current lease. Members hope to finalise the formal requirements in the next few weeks and are grateful for the work undertaken over many years by the New Hall Committee in running the facility and working with the Council to provide a smooth transition in the near future. MARKET HILL The Council has now received the relevant consents from adjacent landowners on Market Hill to enable the Council to progress plans to bring the footpath up to a modern standard. Members are hopeful the planned works can commence this year, with the car park area to follow upon expiry of the current lease with Excel Parking in 2021. The Town Centre Working Group are currently seeking grant funding for refurbishment of the Market Hill Cross as part of the proposed scheme. A new notice board will shortly be installed at the car park and repairs have been undertaken in the last month to improve noticeable defects to the surface. The Council has recently reviewed its maintenance programme and have adopted a quarterly inspection and repair regime to keep the area in reasonable condition prior to the comprehensive long term planned improvements. A planning application has been submitted to reinstate a fruit and vegetable stall on the car park and discussions are underway with the conservation officer to enable this project to be progressed. Town centre regeneration is an important aspect of the Local and Draft Neighbourhood Plan and significant interest has already been received by traders. RECREATIONAL MATTERS The Council have been in discussion with Bawtry Action for Recreational Sports (BARS) for several months to make improvements to the Wharf Street play area, including the reinstatement of lighting. After some unforeseen delays BARS has advised that repairs and replacement of missing play equipment is being arranged and the necessary electrical work planned to enable the lights to be operational. The Council has now completed a survey of all the trees on its properties and will shortly consider a schedule to undertake recommended works, which will cover improvements required over the next 3 years.

Two Council members have kindly agreed to undertake a comprehensive inspection of all memorials at the cemetery with the Council to consider additional maintenance and improvements at the June meeting. A new contractor has recently been instructed to maintain the grounds with the specification extended to include weed suppression. The Council understands that this may cause the area to be unsightly in the initial stages but looks to improve the appearance and standard of the ground in the long term. DOG FOULING Dog fouling appears to have raised its ugly head again with particular problems being experienced at Wharf Street play area. This is despite the fact that the Council have installed an additional bin at the park in the last year. The Council has now sought the support of DMBC dog wardens to patrol the area. The Council would remind dog owners that it is an offence to allow their dog to foul without having the means to pick up after them and would ask that they dispose of the waste responsibly. Dog waste can be placed not only in designated dog bins, but in any litter bins in the town. EVENTS Unfortunately, the Council has been informed that insufficient sponsorship has been forthcoming for the planned Soap Box Challenge event and therefore this will not go ahead this year. Members have indicated however that they would support a postponement and hope such an event can be arranged in 2020. A “Fancy Dress Disco” in November has been approved at the Memorial Sports Ground after the success of last year’s event and a Christmas Senior Citizens Event is also to be considered at the next meeting. GRANTS Members have agreed small grants in April for Austerfield Mosaic, a Bluebell Wood Fundraiser and a local resident. MEETINGS The next Annual Council Meeting is on Tuesday 14th May at 7.00pm at the New Hall. This will be preceded by the Annual Parish Meeting. It’s Time to Talk

Dear Friends, It’s time to talk. I have heard this so many times in all spheres of life. Recently, it is the government talking with the opposition in order to have a compromise over BREXIT.

Talking over issues is not new in Christendom. Jesus encouraged his disciples to talk to God by introducing them to the Lord’s Prayer. This has become one of the most popular prayers of all times. But I wonder if we can think of some of the things we need to talk about. After Jesus resurrected on Easter Day, the story is told of a couple who were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. On the road, they shared their frustrations of the Jesus whom they hoped was the Messiah but had been killed. Luke 24: 15 – 24 state: As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

“What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they cruciﬁed him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t ﬁnd his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” The above conversation between the couple and the stranger depicts the couple’s disappointments

and doubts. It is a typical conversation that occurs in our normal lives. As we read further in the chapter, we will realise that the stranger explained the scriptures to them. This helped them in their understanding. It was when the couple had invited Jesus for supper, and he had broken bread that they realised who he was. Upon reflection I realised that sharing our stories with one another and with God can make a great difference in our lives. For example, many people are experiencing mental and emotional stress because they cannot find the space and time to share. Some people even feel very lonely to the extend that they are considering ending their lives. However, there in hope in talking to someone or an agency. Secondly, I wonder if it’s time for us to be like Jesus by being ready to walk alongside people and listening to them. They want to share their disappointments and doubts but most often, there’s no one to listen. Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, did not interrupt when the couple shared their feelings and disappointments. He did not judge them but just listened. It was after their sharing that he decided to help them with the scriptures. I wonder whether we have the time and space to help people pour out their hearts and feel safe in our presence. I also wonder if they can trust us at all. The couple trusted this stranger on the road to Emmaus. No wonder they were prepared to listen to this stranger who had a solution in his sleeves. This month, I wonder if I can suggest to any one struggling to be bold and talk about their disappointments, fears and struggles. You can find help in the church around you or from a professional agency. Secondly, I wonder if as a good neighbour you can free up a few minutes or hours a week to sit by someone who feels lonely or whom you know is struggling. You will be a saviour to that person and that’s what Jesus is asking us to do. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

As part of the Great British Spring Clean we had a day of action in Bawtry on 30 March and in Austerfield on 13 April. Over 30 volunteers took part and we collected over 40 bags of rubbish. In Bawtry we were also able to clear away leaves that were causing a problem for some residents. In Austerfield, as well as clearing the village we picked litter, a mattress and lots of other rubbish that people watching the planes thrown on the floor rather than take home with them – more about this below. In Bawtry we have decided to have an evening litter pick for the spring and summer as well as the regular 1st Saturday of every month litter pick. Residents can either go directly to the venue or meet at the Hope Centre where toilet facilities and refreshments are available. A bid to have our own equipment was successful so we now have Love Bawtry and Austerfield high vis jackets, our own litter pickers and hoops as well as children’s sets of high vis vests smaller litter pickers and gloves – we haven’t had any children attending yet, but they are very welcome and we do an additional risk assessment and ensure that they are not picking litter near roads. For Austerfield we are going to arrange 4 litter picks a year and we will pick a day when the Study Centre is available so we can all meet afterwards for refreshments. Details will be sent to all residents.

Health and Well Being event

Our 2nd event on 28 March resulted in a number of new ideas being discussed so we are now at the stage of forming a health and wellbeing group, looking at all the ideas and deciding which ones we do ﬁrst. Many of the ideas cost very little to do and we are already identifying funding that might be available. Ideas aren’t just about physical activity as there are many ways to improve health and wellbeing from cleaner streets and everyone taking care of the area, to hobbies, walks, and days out shared heritage. We have a number of volunteers who are interested in getting involved but more are very welcome. Please contact Rachael if you are interested in being involved in a way that suits you. After the event, one of the residents who attended, told Rachael about the holes in the road on Peakes Croft – these have been reported. When we were doing our litter pick in Bawtry, Ivor, one of our volunteers, told Rachael about someone who was having difﬁculty coming into town from Argosy Close. I contacted Highways on Saturday afternoon and by the following Thursday they had visited and told us We have had a look at the area/route from Argosy Close/Martin Lane towards the Town and have arranged for 6 pedestrian dropped kerbs to be installed. 2 at the junction of Argosy Close/Hermes Close, 2 on Martin Lane crossing over from Argosy Close and also 2 on Martin Lane crossing over Ash Tree Avenue. This should give the residents easier access to and from town. It usually takes around 4-6 weeks for the team at North Bridge to go out and install them. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. If you see anything around Bawtry and Austerﬁeld that you think needs improving – do contact us and we will do our best to get the improvements done.

Market Hill Funding Campaign T Enhancing Bawtry’s historic town centre Bawtry is a small market town, the historic centre of which is dominated by a rather ‘ugly’ car parking arrangement that, necessarily, has to serve as a shared vehicular/pedestrian space. The car park is essential for the town’s viability, as no suitable alternative provision can be found, but its presence detracts from the attractiveness of the central conservation area. The town is also rich in history dating back to the Roman times and a recently formed Heritage Group aims to bring that rich history alive again. There is currently a small Heritage Centre within the Community Library and a Heritage Trail is being created, which includes the market cross on Market Hill. The Town Council is proposing to carry out improvement works to the central Market Hill area but the lack of alternative parking, together with ﬁnancial constraints, limit what is achievable at this time. A scheme is currently being prepared to reconstruct the Market Place footpath (using conservation type materials) and, as a minimum, to resurface the general Market Hill area with suitable bituminous material. The new scheme will keep the loss of any car parking provision to a minimum. This essential work is estimated to cost £150k and is intended to be funded from capital reserves (£80k already being allocated for the 2019/20 ﬁnancial year for the footpath works). However, there is an aspiration to also include as many “enhancement” type aspects as possible if funding for these additional works can be found. The ‘wish list’ of additional works is estimated to be £75k, and would include all or some of the following: • Restoration of the market cross and provision of a surrounding paved area (with seating) to both protect the ancient monument and enable residents and visitors alike to relax and enjoy the environment - £16.5k • Some minor works to improve pedestrian safety as far as possible e.g. the link from the existing pedestrian crossing to the bus shelter - £8k

• Provision of some additional seating and planters at suitable locations to improve the general ambience for pedestrians - £5k • Improved quality and co-ordinated street & car park furniture/ signing (including new signing in relation to the Heritage Trail) - £12.5k • Provision of electric vehicle charging points - £5k • Provision of a covered cycle parking shelter - £3k • Alternative materials (type & colour) where appropriate within the scheme to enhance the overall appearance - £20k • Improvements to the street lighting – ‘doubleheading’ the columns on the west side of High Street adjacent to Market Hill - £5k • Works to the existing tree roots and to help protect the trees (will be an essential part of the basic resurfacing works)

Any pledges for financial contribution to help achieve these aspirations would be welcomed. Pledges can be made against specific items if preferred and could be in the form of sponsorship for items such as seating, planters or the covered cycle parking shelter etc. The aim is for the Market Hill scheme to be completed by mid 2021, but the works may be phased in order to spread the financial requirements and minimise disruption in the town centre. Martial arts students at Lynx Black Belt Leadership Academy raised over £150 supporting the Red Nose Day recently. A family fun martial arts session saw the students participate in team challenges consisting of various martial arts disciplines. Music and disco lights created the scene for a fun filled academy, whist students competed against each other wearing their noses and red T-shirts. Money was raised by an entry fee on the night, raffles and refreshments sales. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. Other Doncaster-focussed highlights of the festival, include ‘An audience with Brian Blessed’, Doncaster’s heritage ambassador comes home to CAST recalling growing up here and filming ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ at Doncaster Archives. In 2017 Heritage Doncaster purchased the Conisbrough Court Rolls, 1265-1935, and we have two full days of related events including a number of talks about how you can get involved with the HLF funded project, an insight into the Manor courts and their evolution through time, entertainment from the Doncaster Waites and many free events are being held throughout Conisbrough and Denaby Main. Doncaster Market Place sees the start of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and to celebrate Doncaster’s cycling history, local broadcaster and author, Chris Sidwells talks about Doncaster’s cycling legends including Tom Simpson, a local lad who was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey. The festival has an exciting programme made up of a series of enthralling talks, workshops, walks and events that explore the history of the borough and beyond. Events will be at a variety of different venues and location from morning to evening, so why not discover something new? Doncaster Ramblers The Doncaster Ramblers continue to support local initiatives to help and assist people to get out and about, whether through our work with carers and the cared for, or DMBC’s “Get Doncaster Moving” programme. If we are passionate about anything it’s the health and wellbeing walking in a group can bring. With this in mind and to dispel any notion that we are “hard core fell walkers” our volunteers have come up with a series of Short Thursday Walks in and around Doncaster for Doncaster folk.
