2017 edition

“Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.” Zig Ziglar

I am sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there is a local and mayoral election this month and a general election in June. While this magazine isn’t of a political nature, we are pleased that several of the local candidates have chosen the magazine as a way of communicating with you, their electorate. I hope that you find the information they have provided to be useful to you. The quote above pretty much sums up the one rule I gave to candidates wishing to use the magazines to communicate with you, in that the magazines could be used to positively promote their own policies and promises but not to be negative about anyone else’s. As the months fly by we once again enter the final term of the school year, and enter exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard this May. Once again there are a set of exams being taken in this household – the 4th consecutive year! The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th May. There are sure to be lots of summer events to be included so please don’t forget to get the details to me in good time to publicise your event. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Hello from Mayflower and I hope that everyone enjoyed their Easter break. We have had lots of visitors over the Easter period and met some lovely people. Most bringing bedding, toys and goodies for our many dogs and cats. This is very much appreciated. We have had some really exciting news Marks and Spencer have extended our charity of the year, so instead of our year ending in April we are to carry on until July. They are also coming along to carry out a couple of projects to help us. We are all very grateful for the amazing contributions they have given us throughout the last year. Now the weather is getting a little warmer our dogs are enjoying their extra walks and the dog walkers do a terrific job, so a big thank you to you all. If you are interested in walking or any volunteering please call us, you would need to come and carry out your health and safety training on a Thursday morning at 10.30am. You can either take a hands on role or help with fund raising. This is a very important role, we need people to help with collections on a weekly basis. We need to raise enough money from various sources as it costs us £600 per day to

stay open. This also takes into account £50,000 vets bills for the year. So fund raising is one of the most important jobs anyone can do. If you would like to set up a direct debit for even as little as £2 per month please let us know. Come to our Sanctuary and have a chat about the amazing work we do. We also have a shop in reception that you can buy almost anything for your beloved pet. We will look forward to seeing you soon. Please call us if you require any further information about our Sanctuary or any of our dogs and cat that you have seen on the internet 01302 711330 is the number to call.

He would benefit from losing a few pounds to get him back to an ideal weight. Huskies are a high energy breed that requires a lot of exercise and a lot of grooming. They like to be outside exploring the countryside and will do best with an active family. Niko has previously lived with children, but does not get along with cats. Please research the breed if you are interested in this stunning boy.

Also a big thank you to everyone leaving dog food and bedding in my garage. I am surprised every day by people’s generosity. Best wishes

Vote For Clive

Stone Your Local UKIP Councillor

Thursday May 4th 2017 Rossington, Bawtry and Austerfield Council Elections Do you feel that we need real change in our local authority? Would you like to see REAL transparency, and common sense policies and fairness for all? Do you want local people to represent you locally? Do you feel your local concerns are being ignored? Do you feel passionate about our local community? Are you tired of listening to the same excuses when we ask for help as I am? A Labour authority that controls every seat on the cabinet, and also chairs the majority of every committee in the council, is this democracy? I think NOT! If you answered YES to any of the above, help me make the changes we need, give me your support to continue the fight on your behalf on issues we all feel passionate about, and that needs resolving. Doncaster is desperate for change and a new direction; I believe we have the perfect chance to send a clear message to Westminster, and the Labour party that we in the North are not going to be ignored, as Brexit clearly demonstrated.

The Council is the people of Doncaster, and your voice is ours, and we will be heard!

Vote for Clive Stone on May 4th and help me make the changes we so desperately need locally in Doncaster. Kindest regards, and a big thank you for the support I have received so far. Clive Stone your local UKIP Councillor

On Thursday 4 May Dear residents, It has been a pleasure working with many residents over the last 2 years working on many different issues to make our town cleaner and safer, working with community groups, the Town and Parish Councils and Residents Groups to make Bawtry and Austerfield an even better place to live. On May 4th, you will have the opportunity to vote for 3 Labour Ward councillors. I am standing again and I am delighted to be joined by Mick Cooper and Kevin Fennelly. Together we will make a fantastic team. Details about what we would do if you use your 3 votes on May 4th for us are provided below. Thank you for taking the time to read this and please don’t hesitate to contact us. Mick - I have lived in Rossington for 23 years, worked for Doncaster Council for 28 years and now manage my own Tree Consultancy business. My experiences in Local Government mean I understand how councils work and what is needed to deliver and improve services. I am a former Governor of the Doncaster School for the Deaf and was an assessor for the Duke of York Community Trust. I was part of the team who secured £ 5.2 million pounds of lottery funding for Cusworth Park. My many 3-D floral displays secured Doncaster numerous victories in the Yorkshire and Britain in Bloom competitions. Rossington is my home and I want to be involved in the development of the Rossington, Bawtry and Austerfield future. Rachael – I am very proud to have been your councillor since May 2015. I have helped over 700 residents with their individual problems, ensured issues affecting the whole community were addressed, including: re-lining roads, tidying footpaths and verges and getting a bus service for Austerfield as well as supporting community groups, the

Community Library, BARRS and the sports groups. I have provided an update every month in Bawtry Today as well as having monthly surgeries at the community library and Austerfield. I live in Bawtry with my 2 teenage children – 1 at Hayfield and 1 just started University. Kevin – I am married with four children and eight grandchildren, live in Rossington and have been active in the community for over 40 years. I have been a sports coach, chaired of a combined sports association, a safeguarding office, ran a local rugby club and been part of a local regeneration trust. I have lived, attended school and worked in Doncaster nearly 50 years, 25 of those as a primary school teacher, (15 of them in Rossington). My parents met/married when my father was stationed at Bawtry living for some of their later years in the town until my father passed away. Having supported my wife as a councillor I understand what is needed to be an effective councillor, the commitment it requires and I would relish the opportunity to work with you and on your behalf as a councillor in Rossington, Bawtry and Austerfield.

Our pledges... Be available for all residents at weekly surgeries, on estate walks and through updates in every Bawtry Today. Continue to campaign for 30mph speed limits, traffic calming, speed enforcement action and measures to make it safer for pedestrians of all ages. Continue to work with DMBC to improve our area, cleaning up litter, taking action against dog fouling and maintaining our footpaths and roads. Promoted by Frank Woolrich on behalf of Labour Rossington and Bawtry candidates, all at 51 Waterdale, DN1 3EY.

Dementia Awareness Week

During Dementia Awareness Week, 1420 May, Alzheimer’s Society is asking everyone to unite against dementia. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer. But awareness and understanding remains low and many families are facing it alone. We have put together some tips to help you be the best CAREGiver possible. Remember, it is very important that you have someone to turn to when the going gets tough. Be patient: It can often take time to get into a consistent care routine. Keeping calm and patient will allow this to happen whilst also respecting your loved one’s dignity and independence. Take a guilt free break: Allowing yourself some alone time to unwind a few times each month will help you to recognise and provide a much better quality of care. Accept that they have changed: The person you care for is unlikely to be the person you know them to be. Accepting this change will help you to stay in the here and now and give the best care possible. Help them feel good: A new haircut or item of clothing can do wonders for your loved one’s confidence and self-worth, so don’t forget to treat them every now and again. Accept help: In order to properly take care of someone else, you need to also be able to take care of yourself. When people offer to help you, it’s okay to accept it. Practice acceptance: Focus on accepting the situation you are faced with the one you are caring for and look for ways it can help you grown as a person. Focus on the things you can control and find the silver lining. Focus on what you are able to provide: It’s normal to feel guilty sometimes, but understand that no one is a “perfect” caregiver. Believe that you are doing the best you can and making the best decisions you can at any given time.

36 BAWTRY TODAY

Learn a relaxation technique: Using relaxation techniques can help you feel more rested. They can also help you make time for yourself and don’t have to take lots of time if you’re struggling to make space for activities. Take care of your health: Think of your body like a car. With the right fuel and proper maintenance, it will run reliably and well. Exercise regularly, eat well, and don’t skimp on sleep. Laugh: Laughter is strong medicine for the mind and body and is a powerful antidote to stress. Watch a funny movie, go to a comedy club, and make time for fun activities like bowling or karaoke. If you are struggling to cope as a carer, it is very important to talk to someone to get the help and support you need. The Town Council has recently considered whether to invest additional funding in the pavilion project currently underway at the Memorial Sports Ground. It was reported by the Chairman of BARS that the project had being developed for over 20 years with BARS adopting the project from 2011 to enable access to additional grant funding. During the tender process four contractors submitted bids. A Doncaster based company was eventually chosen by BARS which also supported the local economy. Currently the Town Council are funding 13% of the project with an investment of £58.000. If the additional funding requested was given this would rise to approximately 20%. Similar projects costs have been noted. Cantley pavilion £1m, albeit larger, Howard Pavilion, Edenthorpe £500k, Finningley £321k (smaller). Members have raised their concerns regarding variances with the original scheme costs and WKH QHHG IRU PRUH VSHFLȴ F 7HUPV of Reference and clarity over the relationship with BARS and the user committee. The Council understands that the current shortfall of £30,000 consists of building costs, professional fees and additional requirements. Members have considered the representations by BARS and agreed the Town Council would look to invest a further £29,600 in the project subject to a number of Council conditions being met.

Members have been advised of problems which are arising in Bawtry as a result of a lack of taxi facilities. The Town Council is therefore keen to try and enable a taxi service to operate during GHȴ QHG KRXUV DW 0DUNHW +LOO Footpath Update- DMBC continue to maintain that the footpath is not their responsibility and currently are not looking to fund any costs for unadopted roads. Although not the responsibility of the Town Council it has agreed to investigate a repair scheme with contributions being sought from a number of sources including retailers. Adoption of the repaired footpath by DMBC would also need to be secured as part of any scheme. Market Provision The provision of a Sunday market is currently being discussed by the Council. Criteria, costs, frequency and number of stalls all needed to be considered before a decision is made. Any scheme would also likely require the agreement of Excel Parking. The Town Council have agreed a market is desirable if this can be achieved Neighbourhood Plan Update A spring newsletter has recently been distributed and a meeting with DMBC has resulted in 105 dwellings now being maintained as a minimum by them. First draft sections of the plan are currently being organised with meetings held on the last Wednesday of the month for anyone interested in getting involved.

There is also concern over the time being incurred addressing car park issues at the expense of other matters facing Bawtry. It has therefore been agreed that the meetings continue with time allowed for representations by local organisations. If interested groups want to make a presentation at the Community Forum meetings please contact the Clerk to the Council Planning The council has been active in responding to many planning submissions with local knowledge to DMBC. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Updates of the work that I have been involved in over the last month are included below. Also, I have provided answers to a number of questions that I am often asked which I hope residents find useful. Yellow lines on Tickhill Road – the yellow lines have been implemented as one of the planning conditions for the car park (Bottling Plant) application. Once the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was issued I asked if it could be extended to Pemberton Grove up to the gates due to the number of complaints that I have received about inconsiderate parking on the corners making it very difficult for drivers to see traffic coming along Tickhill Road. This couldn’t be included at the time but Highways are still looking at this along with other measures that can be taken. If something else can be effective before double yellow lines, Highways will always look at this first because TROs can take up to 6 months to be implemented. McCarthy and Stone - this is progressing but I don’t have any new information about a completion date. Closure of Thorne Road – on 30 April this is expected to be closed due to repairs on the railway. The diversion will be signposted. Heritage Update – the different members of this group are working together really well and an outline bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund has been put together. Residents, Retailers, the Town Council, the library and theatre and myself are working together to raise awareness of our heritage and ensure everyone can learn more about it – both residents and visitors. We are delighted that Sue Allen the well-known historical novelist and Mayflower Pilgrim historian has joined the group. Anyone who would like to join the group is very welcome – do contact me for details. As part of the Heritage work, I have been talking to the Heritage Officer from DMBC who are working with councils across the country to celebrate Mayflower 400 in 2020. Residents have complained to me before that Retford and Bassetlaw seem to be doing more than Doncaster and I am pleased that this is now changing with a regional event planned to finish in Bawtry in the autumn. Activities for the summer holiday - I have been working with a number of community groups in Rossington and we have put together a comprehensive programme of activities for the 6 weeks summer holiday. I have been in touch with a number of groups in Bawtry and Austerfield to see if there is any interest in developing a similar 52 BAWTRY TODAY

DMBC Councillor

programme and this is being developed further. Phase 2 FARRS – preliminary work on this has started and May sees the work start properly and it will be completed by May 2018. Golf course –further surveys are being completed and there isn’t a date yet when it is expected to be discussed by the Planning Committee The role of Councillors – a councillor’s role is multifaceted and in a normal working week, 70% of my time is spent resolving individual and community issues across the ward. There are a number of ways that we can get things resolved; often it involves me contacting a DMBC officer directly and the work is completed. It is always great when I get an immediate positive response but that doesn’t always happen so I then have to go back to the officer responsible and suggest different ways to solve the problem. If that then fails, I then contact a more senior officer, or if necessary the Cabinet member responsible and in some cases Ros Jones the Mayor. Perseverance is definitely a quality that all councillors need to have to be effective! The other 30% of my time is spent on various committees including Full Council and many officers have a scrutiny role. I have chaired the Adults Services and Health Scrutiny panel for the last year as well as sitting on regional scrutiny panels looking at various re-configurations of health services. The great thing about the scrutiny panels is that they are cross –party and our focus is to work together to provide an effective scrutiny – if you watched one of my panel meetings, you wouldn’t be able to tell which party that councillors represented. All of our meetings including the Cabinet meetings are open to the public to attend and questions can be asked there and at Full Council. Councillors of all political parties can ask questions at Full Council, put forward motions for discussion so there really are many opportunities for all councillors to get things done and represent their residents who elected them effectively. Due to the elections and not knowing if I will be your councillor still until after 5 May, I won’t be having a surgery in May but if I am elected they will resume in June. I would like to finish my update by saying thank you to everyone who has contacted me, attended my surgeries and for making me feel so welcome wherever I have gone in Bawtry and Austerfield. Thank you for reading this. Kindest regards

Dear Friends, I believe you had a good celebration during the Easter break. I know it was not all about the bunny and the eggs but you were reminded RQFH DJDLQ RI WKH VDFULČ´ FHV *RG PDGH IRU XV through his son Jesus so as to make us his children.

Talking of God and his children, God wants us to engage with him as a child will do with his or her parents. One of such ways is by prayer. If you are close to your father, then you might imagine God as a lovely father who is always engaging with you and looking out for you. But if your dad has not been a big part of your life, or if you have a bad relationship with him, then it might be easy to think of God as distant and uncaring. However, God is a very good father. He is better than any earthly father we could possibly imagine. He loves us very much and wants the best for us. As I have stated earlier on, God wants to be in a relationship with us. So even if you have a hard time identifying with the image of God as your Father right now, be encouraged by who God is. 3VDOP Č‚ VWDWH 54 BAWTRY TODAY
