Going for Gold: New Zumba Fitness Classes for Senior Citizens coming to Bawtry A New Zumba Gold Class is opening in Bawtry on 20th October and if the Tickhill Gold Class is anything to go by, the Class will prove to be a Blast. According to Deborah, the Head Instructor at Big Hearted Zumba who is bringing the classes to Bawtry Hall on a Friday afternoon: "70 is the new 40" and she believes that "the older active adult and those with injuries or new to fitness should not be left out of the new Zumba Craze". It is not surprising that this new lower impact class, which creates a party-like atmosphere using a blend of international music rhythms, is very popular with neighbouring members in Tickhill who are determined to improve their fitness, strength and balance. Deborah says "I am delighted with the great improvements in stamina and fitness levels and I can't believe how passionate about the music and movements my Gold customers become as they gradually get to know the songs" Deborah believes it is just as important that her class enjoy a great social time over a healthy lunch after class and she invites Bawtry class members to stay behind together, bring a snack and enjoy free tea and coffee as a way of connecting together socially after class. Deborah reassures her potential new class members that "the atmosphere is non intimidating and of course you can try your first class for free!" She explains that anyone can sit down when necessary in class and moves can be altered to take specific limitations into account. All you need to join in is a pair of shoes that can slide and turn easily; a bottle of water and clothes that you can get a bit hot in but layer up afterwards to keep warm! There is no need to have a dance or fitness background at all and if you are wanting to lose some of your middle before Christmas, its the ideal place to start.

I
mprove your eating habits today!
Hello again and welcome back. I hope you all found last month’s article useful and tried implementing its advice and tips into your life to improve your health and fitness. This month I’d like to give you a few simple tips on how to change your eating habits for the better:Avoid fad diets – They are too restrictive, unrealistically complex, many are too low calorie and once you become fed up with the weighing, and general ‘faffing’ you’ll end up even heavier due to their slowing effect on your metabolism. Have a cheat meal – Once a week have what you fancy. This keeps you sane, increases your motivation to stick to healthy eating the rest of the week and means you don’t have to give up your favourite unhealthy treats. Drink enough water – Our bodies often confuse hunger and thirst and water helps the body break down fat, so aim for the recommended 2 litres a day. Carbs are not the enemy – We need them for energy and our brain uses them for fuel, like any other nutrient just don’t overdo it. Aim for the majority of your carbs at breakfast, fewer at lunch and minimal after 5pm. Also try to get your carbs from complex sources such as oats, brown rice and sweet potato. Portion control – Use a smaller plate if you have to. Piling your plate with food means you’ll aim to finish it all hungry or not. Going back for seconds makes you question whether you actually need any more. Use a fat photo – Keep your partners and children’s ‘treats’ in one cupboard, then take that fat photo we’ve all got from your last holiday/party and stick it on the back of the cupboard door. Paula’s progress – Well done Paula! Many of you are now aware that TODAY magazine’s Editor is undertaking her own challenge to be in tip top shape come her 40th Birthday. Well the great news is that after around a month of hard work and an individual lifestyle plan Paula has dropped 10 lbs and 6 inches of excess body fat! So if you see Paula tell her well done and tell me if you see a cream cake in her hand! Keep an eye on this column for more monthly updates on Paula’s fantastic efforts and results. If you require more advice, want to be one of the 20 people on my specialist course, have any questions or want to see a particular topic covered in this column I’d be happy to hear from you. Cranial Osteopathy could be the answer
Birth is a traumatic event for both mother and baby, this can be made even more stressful by birth trauma such as breech births, ventouse, forceps delivery, caesarean sections or prematurity. Any of these events can lead to compression of the bones in the skull which are still very soft in babies and children. Abnormal head shapes, irritability and erratic sleeping patterns can be common symptoms that your child is suffering from stress or tension within their bodies. These stresses, tensions and asymmetries can be released using cranial osteopathy quickly & effectively. Many people seek treatment for relief from: Recurrent digestive problems Irritability Lack of sleep Feeding difficulties Learning difficulties such as dyslexia Treatment involves gentle massage of your babies head and tummy to release these strains and restore symmetry. Cranial Osteopathy is also suitable for adults who may be nervous about treatment as well as babies and young children. Victoria Watts Bsc (Hons) Osteopathy DO

I had steadily put on weight over the last 3 years. Fitness classes had never appealed to me. When I saw the fat loss bootcamp advert I thought everyone there would have the same aim as me. The two most appealing things to me were that it was outside in the dark, much better than being in a well lit hall where everyone can see how unfit you are. Every camp we do something different. Following the eating system was so easy as it didn't restrict how much you ate, just what you ate. I found that so much easier than being allowed a little bit of everything as, for me, a little bit inevitably leads to a lot more than a little. After a week I weighed myself and couldn't believe I'd lost 10lb's, so the 5.50am alarm's were worth it. After the first 4 week camp I had lost an incredible 20lb's, and 46.5cm's. I am continuing with the bootcamps, as I still have a lot of weight to lose. Despite not following the nutrition plan to the letter I am continuing to steadily lose weight, feel I have a lot more energy and do not have any cravings that I normally associate with being on a diet. We are based at the Northern Racing College near Bawtry, Doncaster. We are a small group with 5 horses which are used to give Disabled adults and children riding lessons on a weekly basis. We have approx 60 clients riding every week with all forms of disabilities. We have approximately 20 volunteers and two riding instructors. All of the volunteers are unpaid and volunteer because we all think it is a worthwhile cause. We are self sufficient and receive no financial help from RDA national. We have been robbed 4 times this year. This time they took our field cleaning tools, self watering water troughs and Hay out of the storage shelter. All in all over this year we have had over ÂŁ1,000 worth of equipment stolen which we have had to replace out of our funds which are either donated or we have to fundraise for. We are devastated that we have been targeted yet again and wonder if the people who are doing this realise that they are taking enjoyment away from disabled people who love to come and ride the horses on a weekly basis. We always in need volunteers who have a few hours a week to spare. You do not necessarily have to have experience of horses as we also need people to help with admin, hat fitting and sidewalking. P
OPPY APPEAL 2011 th This year sees the 90 anniversary of the Royal British Legion, but unlike many 90 year olds we get busier and busier. Over 10.5 million ex servicemen & their dependents can seek help from the Legion and it is not generally known that we are there for the families as well as the veterans. Sadly the last few years have seen a rise in the numbers seeking our help with the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts as well as all those who have served us so faithfully during previous conflicts. How many people remember those who have served in Korea, Malaya and Northern Ireland, we are there for them too – there has only been one year since 1945 when our troops have not been involved in a conflict. Some of the things we can provide are activity holidays for older children of those serving abroad, the bereaved and the injured. We have trained personnel to accompany bereaved families to inquests, very distressing for all those involved. Holiday homes, nursing homes, help for those leaving the forces, the elderly, the injured, the list is endless. So please when you buy your poppy remember how many people you will be helping. Wear it with pride, encourage everyone you know to do the same – we need your support. If you would like to help by having a box on your business premises, collecting house to house in your neighbourhood or helping in a supermarket, please contact Ann Hickman 01777 818993 – we really need your help and support.

Did you know that bracken is taking over the country? You may have noticed more this autumn than previously; in fact it is spreading at 5% per year. If you go for a walk in Bawtry forest, you’ll see what I mean – it’s everywhere. Bracken grows up to 10’ tall, destroys other plants and carries various diseases in its spores (harmful to both livestock and people) – too much bracken is definitely not a good thing. Cutting bracken down does little good as the roots send up new sprouts, only stronger. There really are only two alternatives to dealing with it; either using a very strong pesticide (that has been banned by the EU) or by using a bracken bruiser. This is a heavy cylinder that is rolled over the bracken, crushing the stem and is pulled either by a tractor or a horse. When the stem is bruised, the roots continue to try pushing nutrients up the stem but they bleed out and the plant suffers. After two or three years of bruising once a year, other plants can re-establish and the bracken recedes. In the Bible, Jesus Christ is described as, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out” (Matthew 12v20) and while I was watching a television report on bracken bruising recently, I was reminded of that verse. It struck me that if we are, as it were, bruised by life – by other people, unfortunate circumstances or long-term illness, etc then we, too, expend a lot of energy in trying to keep going and, like the bruised bracken, perhaps we feel ourselves wilting despite all our hard work. We feel like we’re running just to stand still. It is very easy for others to walk away from us if we’re in this situation as we can end up draining them of energy as well. Sometimes people think of God as being ferocious, demanding and intolerant of failure (like the head mistress, Miss Trunchbull, in Matilda) but this verse shows us that God-in-Christ is actually caring, supportive, gentle and understanding. If life has given you some bruising, then be assured that God wants to heal you, not discard you. Jesus Christ died on the cross in order to restore us to how we were made to be; he suffered the consequence of evil so we don’t have to; his resurrection proves to us that there is hope for the future. Unlike the bracken, we always have the hope of renewal, of healing and of growth; even if we have been bruised. Simon Carter
