Welcome to the

November 2017 edition

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.” Sean Patrick Flanery

The year is racing by, Halloween and Bonfire Night are upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner. Once again, we have lots of activities and events being promoted on these pages – we are lucky to live in such active communities. By the time you receive this issue the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early delivery—don’t forget to change your clocks early on Sunday 29th October. Are you getting organised yet? Last month I urged you to consider anything you wanted to get done or achieve before Christmas and to get yourself booked in with the many businesses offering their services within these pages. For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! The December issues will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th November. This will be of course the Christmas issue, and it is always a jam-packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you get your items to me in good time if you have something you would like included. Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Creating a cosy guest bedroom that your guests will love Creating a cosy guest bedroom that is an enjoyable stay for your guests not only makes your visitors feel good but also for you as well by being the wonderful host and providing them with the comforts that make them feel right at home. Here are some tips and advice on how to recreate a cosy guest bedroom that becomes a welcoming oasis for your visitors. The Bed You wish to ensure your guests feel rested and refreshed from a good night’s sleep, therefore you need a mattress that will do the job. Often a guest bedroom tends to be a place for cast off furniture, this includes the mattress which is often forgotten. Why not try sleeping in your spare bed for a night or 2 to see how comfortable it really is! Fabrics and soft furnishings Creating a cosy bedroom interior would not be the same without soft luxurious cushions and plush blankets to adorn the bed. Choose FXVKLRQV WKDW DUH WKLFN FKXQN\ NQLWV XOWUD À XII\ wools, or smooth cashmere along with blankets all bring texture to indulge your sense of touch. Subtle shades When choosing a paint colour for your guest room try to keep to subtle shades such as whites, greys, earthy greens, pale blues, pastel shades. You can always accent with a few pops of bold colour in your accessories but try to avoid vivid paint colours on the walls as these colours can over-stimulate the mind, which is not the tranquil and peaceful haven you are trying to create for your guests. 12

Blinds Be sure not to neglect the treatment of the windows. Investing in a black out blind provides functionality for your guests to enjoy a lie in and not to be woken up by light pouring in through the windows! For decoration and to tie in with your dÊcor try adding curtains or drapes in softer fabrics as this will add a touch of luxury as well. Lighting You can make a room feel cosy with adding side lamps to either side of the bed to bring a cosy atmosphere to the room. Not only does this bring symmetry to the room but avoids using the harsh bright light of the main light. Storage If room allows, provide your guests with some storage. This gives them the opportunity to unpack, and hang their clothes and provides them with a sense of belonging. Hospitality Adding those extra few personal touches will make your guests feel extra important. Safety

Sparkler Safety T

Fireworks in the garden can be great fun, as long as they are used safely. Each year, over half of all firework injuries are suffered by children. Did you know that sparklers get five times hotter than cooking oil? Sparklers are not toys and should never be given to a child under five. Always buy sparklers from a reputable shop to make sure that they conform to British Standards. This means that they should have BS 7114 written on the pack.

Did you know? It is against the law to carry fireworks in public if you’re under 18 Fireworks must not be sold to anyone who is under 18 It is an offence to let fireworks off during night hours (11pm to 7am), except on Bonfire Night (midnight), Diwali, New Year, and Chinese New Year (1am) It is an offence under the Explosives Act 1875 to tamper with or modify fireworks.

T

D

Don’t buy sparklers from anywhere you’re not sure about, such as the back of a van or from a temporary, unlicensed market stall. Read the instructions in daylight. Make sure you have: • A torch • A bucket or two of water • Eye protection and gloves

community Community Autumn is definitely with us and most days has a chill in the air. Bonfire night is just around the corner which is a scary time for all pet owners. Some dogs and cats are very freaked out by the noise, therefore please be aware of your pet’s requirements. Make sure they are in the house with a radio on and curtains closed, this is the best way I think to keep your pet calm. My cats tend to hibernate under the bed at this time of the year which isn’t a bad thing. I always feel so sorry for horses and farm animals in local fields too.

Vets bills for the Sanctuary are getting increasingly high at the moment, lots of recently rescued dogs and cats have many ongoing medical conditions which our vets are treating to full recovery. We are then able to put them for adoption and hopefully a happy life with a forever home. Our vets bill totalled over £50,000 last year, so we need to capitalize on all the fund raising that is in our calendar for the rest of the year. Anyone wanting tickets for the Race Night on 25th November please call Liz 07769 154456 or Mags 07969 203206 or 01302 711330 and leave a message. Tickets are £6 including Pie and Peas. This will be a brilliant night

Finding a forever home so please come along and support us. The events we have planned up to the end of the year are. 10/11 Collections outside Wheatley Hall Road, M&S 25/11 Saturday Race Night Scout Head Quarters Tickhill. Plus, we have a Doncaster Street collection Dec 2nd and the 23rd Dec, we will be outside Marks and Spencer with some of our dogs who will be looking forward to a day out and the odd cuddle. Many thanks to everyone that has left blankets, towels and food in my garage for transfer to the Sanctuary. These are very much needed donations so thanks you. Our Sanctuary is open 1-4 at a weekend, 2-4 weekdays and closed on a Tuesday. If anyone would like any information on any of our current residents please call 01302 711330, leave a message and someone will return your call. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Salt & Peppa Female 6 months ? Yes ? Yes Poss

Salt and Peppa came into care with their mum, Tia, because their owner was having to move house and was unable to take them with her. They are adorable little girls but can be quite shy with strangers. All they need is a little time and patience for their true personality to come shining through. The wait will be well worth it. Salt and Peppa are very close so a home together is preferred. It would be a dream come true if they could all go together. Could you offer these girls the home they deserve?

The Bawtry Residents group... ...goes from strength to strength, we now have over 1000 members on the BRG Facebook site which gives the BRG a strong voice in shaping the future of our town. I would to say thank you to the two representatives from I-Gas Energy who attended the September BRG meeting. Earlier this year I-Gas Energy were granted planning permission to explore for oil and gas including shale gas at two sites in the local area at Springs Road and Tinker Lane. The projects are both exploratory in nature. At Tinker Lane the project is to drill a single vertical well to take rock samples for analysis along with accompanying ground water monitoring boreholes. At Springs Road it is for two wells, one vertical and one horizontal again with monitoring boreholes. The results from these wells will help the company to understand the shale gas potential in the region and more widely. Depending on these results from the wells they may submit planning applications to carry out hydraulic fracturing in the future but that would require separate planning permission and consultation. Since Nottinghamshire County Council granted planning permission for the two projects IGas has been working through discharging the conditions relating to those permissions before they can start with site construction which will be later this Autumn. $V IDU DV WUDÉ? Both projects have Community Liaison Groups the aim of which is to provide a forum for discussion and dissemination of information between I-Gas Energy, independent organisations and the local community regarding the projects and importantly to listen to feedback from local people. The minutes of these meetings along with further information about the projects can be found at www.igas-engage.co.uk. During a one hour period 12 vehicles out of 110 were caught speeding as they entered Bawtry from Tickhill, just proving the point as the BRG has said for a long time that speed reduction in Bawtry should be adjusted on all roads to 30mph. National Tree Week November 25th marks the start of National Tree Week, which in turn marks the start of tree-planting season. Considering that most of us in the UK have fairly small plots we do love our trees. The trouble is we’re not always terribly good at choosing them. How many times have you driven through a housing estate and observed an enormous weeping willow or an enormous pine tree completely obscuring a front garden. It can be tricky deciding what sort of tree to plant on a small, suburban plot but there are plenty of candidates. Generally trees up to 8-10m are considered suitable. The best urban trees offer year-round interest. Varieties of Acer Palmatum are rather lovely. They are elegant trees which have attractive green or purple foliage and colour beautifully in the winter.

Why not plant a tree during this week? Our guide has some helpful tips.

How to Plant a Tree Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball. Make up a mixture of half compost and half soil from the hole. Put a few inches of this mix at the bottom of the hole. Trees need support so drive a support stake into the hole at one edge. This needs to be done before the tree is planted or you risk damaging the roots. Tip the tree from its container and loosen the URRWV D OLWWOH 3ODFH LW LQWR WKH KROH DQG ÂżOO LQ with the soil and compost mixture. Firm it down with your heel. Use proper straps to secure the tree to the post. Water well!

For my money Amalanchier Lamarckii (or June Berry Tree) is about as hardworking a tree as you’ll come across. During March and April it SURGXFHV D IURWK\ VKRZ RI ZKLWH ÀRZHUV WKHQ in June these are replaced by attractive deep purple, and supposedly edible - though I’ve never tried them - fruits. Then, when Autumn arrives the tree pulls out all the stops and EXUVWV LQWR ¿HU\ FRORXU ,I \RX RQO\ KDYH URRP for one tree then an Amelanchier won’t let you down. Another hard worker is Sorbus hupehensis var. obtusa. This tree has a pretty shape and is attractive throughout the year. In the late spring it is covered in white blossom which is followed by masses of dark pink berries. The blue-green leaves turn red in the autumn. It’s just my opinion of course but without at OHDVW RQH WUHH D JDUGHQ FDQ VHHP ÀDW DQG D little dull. Trees provide structure and height but are also a haven for birds and insects, which in turn add colour and life. 42 BAWTRY TODAY

Dear Friends, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven (Luke 6: 36 – 37). The next part of the Lord’s Prayer for the month of November is: “As we forgive those who sin against us. +XPDQ EHLQJV DUH VRFLDO EHLQJV DQG WKHUHIRUH will rub against each other in life. This can lead to friction in society. Jesus, knowing how human nature is, commends that we forgive each other. I have heard people say many times that, ‘unless s/he says sorry or repent, I will never forgive him/her’. The words of the Lord’s prayer and the bible passage from Luke’s gospel above reminds us that there is no condition placed on forgiveness. Someone once said to me, ‘if you are waiting for the person who wronged you to say sorry, how about if the person is no more in the world, I mean dead. Are you waiting for the person to resurrect and say sorry to you before you forgive him/her?’ The simple issue is that people move on in life but some of us continue to reel in unforgiveness for the rest of our lives. By the way, research has found that unforgiveness can lead to health issues such as depression and heart attacks. This month is very important in the life of the church and this country. We are celebrating ‘Remembrance’ in many ways – ‘All Saints’ and ‘Remembrance’ Days. Talking of ‘saints’, depending on the Christian tradition you align yourself to, you may regard them as people who have lived before us and done good works. Bawtry Town Council - NOVEMBER 2017 Market Hill

Christmas

Emergency repairs should shortly commence to the footpath on Market Hill. This is a short term fix however and the Council is currently looking to contact the owners of the adjacent properties to seek their consent to the footpath being replaced and formally adopted by DMBC. The Council can’t agree such works unilaterally as we don’t own or have responsibility for the footpath. Consent will be required from all property owners if a long-term solution is to be reached.

Yes it’s getting to that time of year again with the Council supporting the Christmas light switch-on event scheduled for Sunday 26th November. The Council funds the installation of a number of Christmas decorations in the town and will continue to fund the carousel on Market Hill and additional security costs this year.

Events The Council has now approved the Drivers Pageant at Market Hill in August 2018. The event was a big success this year and members are pleased to support it. The Council is aware however that any event can cause issues with parking and the Council is therefore working with the organisers to minimise disruption. We understand additional parking will be available at the Memorial Sports Field in 2018 and that paid stewarding is being considered to ensure vehicles do not park on the nearby verges. A new Pedal GP event has also been approved for May 2018. Full details will be published in future issues. The Council is currently sponsoring the Illuminate event which is being held on Sunday 19th November from 4pm. The event will start with a candle lighting service at St Helena’s Church, Austerfield followed by a Lantern Parade through Bawtry. There will be entertainment provided by the Phoenix Theatre and the Quirky Choir at the Civic Service in St Nicholas’ Church, Bawtry. There will also be a drinks reception with guest speakers at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry. Reserve you tickets or to find out more email: culture@ doncaster.gov.uk

War Memorial Working Group - Update A contractor has now been provisionally approved to relocate the War Memorial on Great North Road to the Community Library. Planning permission and grant funding will be needed to complete the scheme however with the working group now working to obtain funding to progress the project.

Memorial Sports Field Earlier this year the Council approved additional funding to help complete the new sports pavilion. Members are aware that the car park and driveway also need significant improvement at a time when bookings are rapidly increasing. At the November meeting members will consider using some of the surplus funds towards the much needed car park and driveway improvements and additional funding to demolish the old building, which would need to be removed as part of the scheme.

Council Meetings & Business The next Council meeting is on Tuesday 14th November at 7pm at the New Hall Residents and Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings and there is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council. Please come along and get involved.

Welcome to the Autumn/Winter edition of the Austerfield Parish Council newsletter. Christmas Events The Parish Council will once again be holding a Christmas lunch for the senior residents of Austerfield; so please keep a look out for your invitation. If you are eligible to attend the event and do not receive an invitation then please contact any member of the Council. A Christmas light switch on and village light event will also be held on the first Sunday in December. Residents are invited to enter into the Christmas light competition by lighting up their gardens to help make the village look festive. Mulled wine and mince pies will be available along with a Christmas carol sing along accompanied by Markham Main Brass Band. Village Show and Defibrillator Update The Parish Council held a village show and scarecrow event on 10th September at Austerfield Study Centre. The show was very successful with lots of great entries from residents. Well done to the Bagilhole family from Newington Road who won 1st prize for their scarecrow being eaten by a shark entry. All the funds raised from the show will be used to fund a community defibrillator. The Parish Council would like to express thanks to Jim Leech who ran a tombola at the village show and arranged a race night at The Ship Inn Newington and raised a massive £760. The total amount raised towards the defibrillator is now £1,000.64. 52 BAWTRY TODAY

War Memorial The Parish Council recently met with members of Bawtry Town Council to discuss the proposal to relocate the War Memorial on the A638. The Council were reassured that the relocation of the memorial would be handled by expert contractors who would ensure the safety of the memorial. The new site for the memorial will be in front of Bawtry Community Library which will enable residents and visitors to view the memorial safely. If you know of any WWII soldiers from the village who are not named on the memorial then please contact a member of the Council. Extension of 30mph Speed Limit The 30mph speed limit has now been extended to Highfield Lane; so hopefully residents should notice a reduction in speed of the vehicles travelling through the village. Electricity Issues The Parish Council have become aware that some residents have regular power cuts and that there could be an issue with the electricity supply to the village. A survey has been circulated through the village; if you have not yet returned the survey; please do as evidence needs to be gained to highlight the issue to Northern Powergrid. Parish Council Website Please remember to check the Parish Council website; the address is www.austerfieldpc. co.uk. The website is updated regularly and contains information about the meetings; planning applications and events. If you would like anything adding to the website then please contact the Clerk. Facebook Page The Parish Council Facebook page is gaining followers; please remember to share any news or events with your friends. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Playground Equipment The Parish Council are in the process of applying for grants to fund the purchase of adult fitness equipment. The Council hope to be in a position to purchase the new equipment in the New Year. Telephone Box Austerfield Parish Council now own the telephone box which is located on High Street. If you have any ideas as to how the telephone box can be used then please contact a member of the Council or come along to a meeting to discuss your idea. Parish Councils in other areas have used the telephone boxes for libraries; information hubs and defibrillator stations.

Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors

Thank you to all the residents that contact us with their concerns, suggestions and what changes they would like to see made. We are happy to get involved in any council issues but we often get asked to assist with St Leger housing issues, benefit concerns, Environment Agency, Network Rail and other Government bodies and we get involved with these as well. In most cases the situation can be resolved quite quickly and we are always happy when this is the case. Other issues such as speeding and other parking issues are not so easy to solve due to what one person thinks is a good thing, others might see something different. Updates from our work this month are provided below. Parking and Speeding Concerns A lot of concerns raised by residents this month have involved speeding cars and parking problems so the majority of this update will be dedicated to these issues. We have provided an update below on particular concerns but we think it would be useful to highlight what can be done to raise your concerns. As your councillors we regularly email, arrange meetings with Highways Officers and meet with the Director to raise your concerns. The same approach with the police as well. In our experience, what helps is for them to hear the same complaint on a regular basis from many different sources so you can: • Contact DMBC Highways Department and tell them your concerns, either by phone or email or by letter • Contact South Yorkshire Police – either by calling 101 or writing to South Yorkshire Police HQ, Carbrook House, Carrbrook, Sheffield S9 2DB or general enquiries enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk • Contact Caroline Flint, MP on 01302 623330 or caroline. flint.mp@parliament.cuk or write to her at Meteor House, First Avenue, Auckley, Doncaster DN9 3GA Also, if your car is damaged or you have a near miss, or witness excessive speeding, please do report it to the police by calling 101. Why is this important? When we ask for action to be taken due to residents’ concerns and the number of accidents, we often get told that according to police statistics, accidents have not been reported. In addition, if residents want to get together and plan what action they want to take then we would be happy to arrange this. This really is one of those situations where as well as posting comments and concerns on Facebook pages, residents, councillors, Residents Group and the Town Council really need to work together and plan what we are going to do. If you look at towns and villages where this has been done successfully, residents 54 BAWTRY TODAY

went very public with their concerns and kept this at the forefront of everyone’s attention. Whilst we are happy to stand with banners on Tickhill, Station and Gainsborough Road highlighting that it is a 30mph zone it would be better if there were more than 2 of us. It was good to hear from George from the Town Council that he accompanied the PCSOs on a speed check operation and 10% of drivers on Tickhill Road were speeding. Annoyingly drivers alerted other drivers about the operation taking place, which is often the case. Unfortunately, there are a number of drivers that have no concerns about speeding on any road, whether Bawtry, in the Borough or anywhere else in the country. Pemberton and Top Street/Doncaster Road It was good to see the yellow lines put down at the middle of October and also disappointing that the day after, some drivers didn’t think it applied to them so decided to park there anyway. I contacted DMBCs enforcement team and they are doing regular patrols and where cars are parked on yellow lines, they will receive a fixed penalty notice. Tickhill Road Following requests from many residents, we have asked DMBC to extend the yellow lines up to the national speed limit sign. We are aware of the accidents that have taken place with cars being damaged and of parking on the footpath – we have asked the enforcement team to issue tickets if cars are parked illegally (parked so far onto the path that pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters can’t get past). On a lighter note to finish the Illuminate parade comes to Bawtry on 19 November. There are details elsewhere in the magazine and I do hope you will be able to come along for all or part of the event.
