Welcome to

the NOVEMBER 2014 edition

“Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star.” W. Clement Stone Early in October I spent a couple of days at a Publishers Conference, meeting with many other publishers of magazines just like this one. People travelled to the Heart of England conference centre from up and down the country, one even arriving from Australia! It is always lovely to spend time with fellow publishers and we all learn from one another and some good friendships have been formed. Lots of planning for 2015 took place, and yes I will be aiming for the moon during my 10th anniversary year! I was honoured to be shortlisted for 3 awards at the evening awards ceremony, and I came home with a bottle of bubbly for ‘meeting deadlines’! We have not one but 2 prize giveaways this month. We have the return of the ‘Win a family ticket to Peter Pan Pantomime’ and also 10 pairs of tickets to the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. The Racecourse Pantomime is looking like it is going to be fabulous entertainment and I heard great reports of the Festive Gift Fair from those who went last year, in fact I am planning a trip myself this year. You may be surprised how few people enter the giveaways we run, so you have every chance of winning prizes if you regularly enter. Look out for the details of how to enter inside the magazine. The December issues will be delivered to you late November. I can’t believe that we are back to producing Christmas issues already! If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th November. December magazines are always the busiest of the year so do get your contributions to me on time.

Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Well, it’s getting close to the end of the year and Christmas is being mentioned on every corner! Here at the Sanctuary we are getting very excited as our new reception and kennels are coming along really well and will be all ready for Christmas. So when our bleak weather appears we will have somewhere for people to sit and chat about how they can give a rescue dog or cat a warm cosy home and future. Lots of people are giving up their time at the moment to help with fundraising. Friday the 31st of October is Halloween. Mayflower would like to invite you to their scariest fun day ever! Come along and take one of our dogs into the paddock, find doggy treats and all kinds of creepy crawlies. Bring along a pumpkin and take part in our carving competition. Join in on our question and answer trick or treat. Hot dogs and juice will be available. PLEASE book a half hour slot by 28/11/14 for between 11 am-4.30pm Friday and 11 am-3pm Saturday. It will be £3 for adults and £2 for children. DONT FORGET TO DRESS UP. CALL AMIE 07528 452702 TO BOOK YOUR BEST ‘HOWLOWEEN’ EVER... The accomplished artist Diane Hill is having an art exhibition at the Methodist Church Lounge on Saturday 29th November 10-3. There will be hot mince pies, cake, coffee and sherry to purchase, raffle tickets will also be available to purchase. Please go along to support Diane,

Finding a forever home this is one we are all looking forward to. 6th December we will be rattling tins in Doncaster town centre, so please come over and say hello, it’s lovely to chat to everyone and listen to their heart-warming stories. 7th December please join us for the Santa Dash at Sandall Park in Doncaster we are one of the nominated charities. Belle Female JUNE 2013 3.5 Years No No Yes

Hello I’m Belle, I came to Mayflower as a puppy and I had extremely deformed front legs which have now been corrected. I am a wonderful, friendly Lurcher who only wants to please. I am looking for a new home because I wasn’t getting along with other dogs on a walk but I am responding very well to my carers training. I can get a little over the top with my willingness though and I will need firm leadership. I will need to be an only dog but I do behave extremely well in the home and I am very loving towards children. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

Name: Sex: Date into care: Age on arrival: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Lived with children:

Cleo Female 14 July 2014 3 Months ? Yes Yes

Cleo was taken into care with her sister because their previous owner hadn’t realised how much hard work two small kittens were. Kittens of this age can be very destructive and need careful handling and socialisation if they are to grow into sociable, loving young cats. Cleo is very loving and would happily be a lapcat given the chance. She loves to play with other cats so it would be nice if she could be rehomed with a friend Her sister has been rehomed but Cleo is still waiting for her new family to arrive. Please don’t make her wait too long.

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

WOULD YOU LIKE AN X RAY OR A SCAN? For people experiencing painful joint or spinal problems, the answer to this question is often yes. The belief is that if we could just see inside the body, the cause of the problem would be clear and the solution evident. If only it was this simple! Of course, x rays and scans are of great value in certain clinical situations e.g. fractures, osteoporosis and arthritic diseases. What they don’t do, however, is explain pain. The most likely finding following an x ray or scan is degenerative changes. Degenerative changes occur when joint surfaces become scuffed and less smooth or soft tissues such as discs become drier and less spongy. This is much like developing grey hairs and wrinkles. Genetics and lifestyle (e.g. smoking and poor diet) may speed up this process but degenerative changes will occur in all of us eventually. And so it cannot be possible for degenerative changes per se to cause pain otherwise our clinic would be full of over 55’s (it isn’t!) and the nation’s elderly would all be in agony (they aren’t!) Often there isn’t a direct relationship between x ray findings and a patient’s clinical presentation. A patient might have a hugely restricted and painful hip suggestive of severe osteoarthritis with little evidence on x ray. Conversely, a patient may have gross degenerative changes on x ray but complain of little more than a minor discomfort whilst running. So, rather than an x ray or scan, a thorough assessment and detailed examination is often far more useful in working out the cause of your problem and how best to treat it.

FIXED FEE Family Law

Do you need advice about a family problem but worry about the cost? We understand that costs are a significant concern. We offer fixed fees for family law services wherever possible. This may cover either the whole of an agreed plan of action, or dealing with a specific stage in the process. Even if your case is not suitable for a fixed fee we will give you a realistic estimate of the fees to be incurred. If you are on a low income or certain benefits, you may be exempt from paying all or part of any Court fees. Legal aid is still available for some family problems involving domestic violence, where social services are involved with children or where an agreement has been reached in mediation. Legal Aid is also available to cover the cost of attending mediation, and will cover the costs of BOTH parties, even if only one party qualifies for Legal Aid.

Misson & Springs WI “That was the best evening we’ve had this year”. Well, we have said it after every meeting so far this year and we said it again it after a most entertaining and enlightening evening on 24th September. George Buchanan’s talk on Growing up at Hodsock was lively, amusing and informative. We were intrigued as he set out his props; all was soon revealed as he opened a large leather suitcase and produced a costume worn by one of his forebears at a fancy dress ball given by the Duchess of Devonshire in 1897 – I won’t reveal what the fancy dress was in case any of you have not yet heard the tale. Suffice it to say, that of the 600 outfits produced by the country’s best tailors and dressmakers for this splendid occasion, only three survive and this one may occasionally be viewed alongside another one on display at Chatsworth House. The cricket bat which he had also brought along, had been made from willow grown at Hodsock and signed by cricketers whose names were familiar even to those of us who are not particular fans of the game. We learnt so much more about Hodsock than the well-known snowdrops, and some of us are planning to get married again simply to have the experience of a wedding with a Tudor gatehouse on our photographs – a gatehouse where Henry VIII had lunch accompanied by three thousand bodyguards. George skilfully linked tales of a more distant gambling ancestor and his shrewd sister, to his own family – the ninth generation - who are living and working at Hodsock today, maintaining precious traditions while ensuring that the estate is part of the twenty-first century and indeed, well beyond. At our meeting on the 29th October, we shall taste dishes made by our members and swap recipes alongside a quiz and beetle drive, and on 26th November, we shall welcome Kirsty Champ who will demonstrate and help us to make our own lanterns – something to look forward to on a dark winter’s evening. We are already planning next year’s calendar and have some more interesting evening planned; we look forward to your joining us, either as a member for the whole year or as a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T 20

Pastor’s Page

Carol Kirkwood had predicted that although storms would sweep through the whole country in the morning, the East Yorkshire coast would remain dry. So, straight after breakfast, I grabbed my wife, my dog and my flask and drove the 70 miles to Bridlington, looking forward to a refreshing walk along the promenade followed by a gentle browsing among the shops and a seaside pub lunch. All along the M62 the rain came down, but I wasn’t perturbed – the weather professional had assured me that the coast would be dry; turning north at Hull the weather continued to rock the car but, as I told my wife, we were still several miles from the sun-drenched coast and Carol never lies. When we got to Bridlington it was blowing a gale; a freezing, lashing gale with the rain coming sideways ripping into our cheeks like needles and the wind flapping our trouser legs so hard I thought they would rip right off. However, we had driven all that way to walk along the beach and walk along the beach we would. Somehow, even though the rain was pouring down, 28

BAWTRY TODAY

the sand still got whipped up and thrown into our eyes and we had to lean forward into the wind so as to stay upright. Our dog gave me a look that was a confusion at the excitement of a walk coupled with the pain that that day’s walk was causing. At least we had the whole beach to ourselves. Obviously, the weather presenters hadn’t lied, but they had got it not quite right; as we were driving home in the afternoon the sky cleared and the wind dropped; so perhaps the only thing they got slightly wrong was the timing. Us human beings do get things not quite right –causing offense when trying to be funny, realising we had said “turn left” when we meant “turn right”, making a point rather too passionately, etc. We all get things wrong, even when we have the most noble of motives. Perhaps, the next time someone inadvertently confuses/ offends/ hurts us we could remember the times we have done the same and offer them the grace and understanding we would hope for from them. As Jesus said: “do to others as you would have them do to you.” And next time – take waterproofs.

Tickhill Male Voice Choir

Tickhill Music Society Friday, 14th November 2014 at 8.00 p.m. St. Mary's Primary School

“Cry Freedom” was the title of our Annual Concert. As it is 100 years since the start of the “Great War” the Choir wished to remember in song all those who gave their lives for freedom. The programme included songs from “Les Miserables”, a tribute to Nelson Mandela, “Speed Your Journey” about people being forced from their homes and Dvorak’s Largo “Goin’ Home”, expressing the nostalgia everyone feels for home. A contrast in mood involved readings and some lighter songs, examples being Moonlight Serenade and Blue Moon. There was audience participation in “Senzenina” and “Steal Away” played on guitar, with everyone singing the chorus. Some all-time favourites from Al Jolson were enjoyed by everyone in a singalong. The performance concluded with “O Valiant Hearts” and “For The Fallen”, tributes to all those involved in the fight for equality, democracy and freedom. Favourable comments were received from the audience who enjoyed the theme and variety of the whole programme Looking to the future, we will be holding our Christmas Concert on Saturday 13th December in the Tickhill Methodist Church. We are always looking for new members, so if you enjoy singing just come along for an informal visit to any of our rehearsals. These are normally held every Monday night at 7.30pm in the schoolroom at the back of the Methodist Church. Just listen or chat to some of the members, there is no obligation and you will be made welcome. The Choir performs at a range of venues, for various groups and organisations. Open Door Auctions success Open Door Auctions, the local family-run property business specialising in residential sales, has announced the success of its latest auctions – and is encouraging would-be sellers to come along to its upcoming events. The firm hosts bi-monthly auctions in Retford and Gainsborough, and has sold more than 110 properties so far this year. Including 27 homes via two auctions in one week this October, achieving an average of £11,000 above the guide price. The success of Open Door shows that residential auctions are becoming a very popular way to sell property; in fact, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135% increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Recent trends have also shown that more and more vendors are taking “normal” houses to auction, not just homes in need of renovation as seen on the daytime TV show Homes Under the Hammer. This is largely due to protracted sales times: at the moment, the average length of time to sell a house is 13 weeks in Gainsborough, and 19 weeks in both Retford and Worksop. Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, comments: “Selling at auction can be a great way of making sure that you get the best price and avoid any last-minute snags. With property auctions becoming more and more popular, the increase in demand for homes often leads to prices being pushed up, which is great for vendors who can also protect themselves through setting a reserve price. You also have the benefit of knowing that once the hammer falls, the contract is legally binding and the buyer has to complete within the agreed timeframe, usually 28 days.”

Scooter Safe ...making you safer Free Mobility Safety Course & Crime Prevention South Yorkshire Police Community Safety Department with support from local mobility provider Parkgate Mobility and Doncaster 50+ Holmescarr Community Centre, Grange Road, Rossington, DN11 0LP Friday 21st November • 1 till 3pm

Want to book a place on this free training as an individual? Would like to organise a group to share transport or be part of a group?

“Selling your home at auction is becoming a successful way to move up the property ladder, so we’re inviting anybody interested in auctions to come to our next events in Gainsborough on Thursday 27 November and Retford on Tuesday 2 December.”

Would like to meet local police and receive free crime prevention advice?

On the open market, potential buyers are able to make an offer before their own home is on the market. This can lead to complicated chains and a protracted sales process. By focusing on proceedable cash buyers, completing surveys before an auction and requiring a 10% deposit on exchange, auctioneers are able to avoid these sorts of problems.

or E-mail: info.holmescarr@gmail.com T

So for vendors looking for a fresh approach for selling their home, and vendors who want a quick, legally-binding sale, selling a home at auction could be the solution. This, combined with the possibility of seeing the price driven up by enthusiastic purchasers bidding against each other, means that selling property at auction is, for many people, a positive way to go. For more information about the upcoming auctions or to arrange a free property valuation, call the team at Open Door Auctions on 01777 712614 or email help@opendoorauctions. co.uk http://opendoorauctions.co.uk/ T 42

The Christmas Art & Food Market and Harley Open Studios Saturday 29th - Sunday 30th November 2014 Whether you’re looking for a gift for the guy who has everything, or something extra special for someone extra special, you are sure to find the perfect present (and at prices to suit all pockets). There will be a wide range of unusual and hand-made gifts, with 70 artists and designers and a food market fit for the most fanciful foodie. This is seriously special Christmas shopping. Each market stall has been selected by experts from The Harley Gallery and Welbeck Farm Shop. And with artisan production from the Welbeck Estate itself, visitors can expect to choose from a great range of unique products that have been hand crafted with care and skill. As well as the art market The Harley Artists’ Studios will open their doors for the weekend, you can explore the studio complex to visit these fascinating workspaces and buy directly from the makers. The Studios are only open to the public twice a year and can be found within the 5th Duke of Portland’s Victorian Tan Gallop and Kitchen Garden. The Welbeck Farm Shop will also present their fabulous food market, focussing on local products including beer, cheese, bread and chocolates made on The Welbeck Estate itself. Tickhill & District Lions This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 8th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive. We have a new firework supplier who has promised spectacular displays. The event is jointly being organised by the Tickhill and District Lions and Tickhill Cricket Club. Entrance is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets and, as ever all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Proceedings will begin at 5pm with the lighting of the Bonfire followed by two firework displays. There will also be a BBQ selling locally supplied sausages and beef burgers. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all-round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and with the Cricket Club bar open, the bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. Aside from the Bonfire the Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with lots of great prizes on offer including a cycle voucher for all those budding Tour de France enthusiasts. Ticket will be on sale throughout the village and on our stall at the Late Night Shopping event. The draw takes place on Tuesday 16th December. If you planning to attend the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 27th November look out for the Lions Christmas float. T
