to the October edition W elcome of BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY

Despite my love of summer, the change in season from summer to autumn is one of my favourites. Our clocks go back an hour on 28th October, meaning the nights are darker, the leaves are falling, and Strictly Come Dancing is back on the TV! It’s time for cosy nights on the sofa, when you can relax with a cuppa and take a good look through this edition! For those of you who like to plan ahead for Christmas, now is the time to start. You might just find inspiration for that unusual gift, and if you would like to get your house and garden ready for the festive season, you’ll find all the local people you need to help you within these pages. It’s still a tough economic climate, and its important to spend money wisely and locally, to help us all through these challenging times. The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th October. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 12th October.

Best Wishes, Paula

Arts Review and What’s Going On - October 2012 Hilary Cartmel Macbeth was good, and still is, - if you can get yourself a ticket – do so. My guess is that it will be sold out. The miserable darkness of the stark Scottish landscape and chill castles was staged very simply. It’s a play where the scenes take place mostly in gloaming or darkness even during daytime there is little light. I did Macbeth for my ‘O’ level English Lit, and there was a time when I could have recited tracts of it. I haven’t seen it on stage since, and this production did it proud. It’s the first time that I have seen the Crucible main stage set up in the round, the audience tightly and completely encircling a round stage set with ‘rocks’ around its edge and echoing the image and theme of the crown which was repeated and emphasised in many ways throughout the play, continually reminding us that without the lust for the Crown there would be no plot. The action didn’t take any prisoners, Banquo’s ghost was horrifying, we saw Lady McDuff’s brains dashed out and the sword fight at the end looked and sounded very real, the witches were old hags and not some idea of supernatural spooks, the poetry was beautifully spoken. Crucible Theatre until Saturday 6 October. In contrast the Sheffield Theatres are doing some comedy in October, it’s the Last Laugh Comedy Festival including some household names. Tickets £12 - £21.50 At the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Wakefield – Kneehigh Theatre have reworked Steptoe and Son – until October13 - Darkly comic, and deeply moving, this is a 20th century icon, re imagined for the new generation. www.wyp.org.uk Closer to home on Friday 12 October at The Rock (Wesley Centre, Maltby) is John Tams and Barry Coope – in my humble opinion Tams is the best voice singing in the English Folk tradition and together they are one of the funniest duos to grace any stage. Good therapy. Tickets £10 on the door www.therock.org.uk At Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery from 20 October until 9 December the annual ‘Open Art’ exhibition begins with walls hung floor to ceiling with work from artists across the region with many works for sale. At Cusworth Hall an exhibition entitled Opposites Attract – a two person show - Ashley Jackson and Graham Ibbeson, two of Yorkshire’s best loved artists ( not counting Hockney of course) I can’t imagine what this show will look like, but I have every faith that it will work well. Ibbeson was a student at Trent Poly( as I was - but long before my time you understand) and was famous for two things, his ability to consume sandwiches and his wonderful humorous clay modelling. Tickhill Music Society’s October concert is on the 19th – Guitarist Dimitris Dekavallas program to include Bach, Guillliani and others at St Mary’s School at 8pm tickets £10 on the door Village Ventures is bringing music from American roots musicians Buffalo Gals to Bircotes Town Hall on Sunday 21 October . This lot ( a six piece band of not just Gals) have a claim not only to fantastic enthusiastic and talented musicianship but also humour too. Tickets £8.50 01302 752515 / 752642 or on the door Are you picking up the theme here? Go out and get a laugh – do yourself some good. 6 | BAWTRY TODAY

From Bawtry to Cambodia Next month, people in Bawtry and surrounding areas are invited to hear about the work of Oxfam from a long term supporter who visited Cambodia with the charity. Tracy Woods, a project manager from Cheshire, travelled to Cambodia with the international charity in 2007. She met many people and visited lots of projects, including some focusing on domestic violence and agriculture – people whose lives are very different to ours and who have benefited from the work of Oxfam. Since then she has been doing everything she can to spread the word about what she saw.

Tracy in Cambodia

Tracy will be sharing her experiences and viewsndon Oxfam’s work at St Nicholas’ Church Hall in Bawtry on Tuesday 2 October at 7.00pm. Tracy said: “I am very excited about sharing what I have learnt about Oxfam’s work in Cambodia with people from this part of South Yorkshire. Cambodia is an absolutely fascinating country - they have been through so much in recent years, but great progress is being made. Hopefully, with the help of the people of Buxton, we can help this country have an even brighter future”. Oxfam’s work in Cambodia focuses on closing the increasing gap between rich and poor. There are several ways in which they do this, including supporting people to earn a fair living and making sure that health and education are available to everyone. Everyone is welcome at the Oxfam event but for more information, please contact Harriett Roberts on 07557 291 868 or email hroberts@oxfam.org.uk.

Marley Approx age: 4 months Yet another kitten from an unwanted litter. Although his previous owner loved Marley very much, she was unable to keep him due to her daughters allergies. Marley is just a treasure to have around. Always looking for fun, he will play with a scrap of paper for hours but he is just as happy curled up in your lap having his tummy tickled. All he wants is a family to call his own, regular meals and a basket (or lap) to snuggle up into. Not much to ask for is it? Blue

Greyhound x Whippet Age on arrival: 9 months old

Blue finds himself looking for a new home because his previous owners are now working long hours and feel it is unfair to leave him alone. We have found Blue to be a very loving and playful dog, who has quickly become a favourite with everyone who has worked with him. Blue has had an operation on his patella (kneecap) and is recovering well. Should there be any re-occurrence in the future Mayflower will be responsible for his treatment. Because he can be boisterous at times we feel he would be better homed with children that were slightly older, if any at all, just to cut down on the risk of him jumping up and hurting a youngster. Blue is a dog with lots of potential and with the right handling we feel he will quickly become a much loved member of any family. 10 | BAWTRY TODAY

It’s never to late to learn to Swim

They say that 1 in 5 adults cannot swim and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life! So why doesn’t everyone who hasn’t learnt to swim by the time they are adults get themselves off to swimming lessons to learn? I run a private adult swimming school at Bircotes Leisure Centre every Sunday night and have been teaching adult swimmers of all ages and abilities for some considerable time, so I reckon I’ve heard most of the reasons that people come up with. Here’s a few: swimming gets you (and particularly your hair) wet; you have to expose bits of you that you’d rather keep under wraps; it’s probably too late to learn at your age. Some of these things are true: it is very wet in a swimming pool and it is better to swim in a swimming costume than in everyday clothes. As for it being too late to learn, most adults are surprised to find how quickly they can learn. Of course it takes different people different amounts of time, and each person has different aspirations, but to be able to enter the pool and travel around without support should only take a matter of a few lessons. There is one very real fear that many adults have regarding learning to swim, and that is that they will be recognised. I guess this fear attaches itself to the fear of exposing more of your body than you care to share with the public and the embarrassment of admitting you can’t swim. Firstly I can attest to the truth of the rumour that it is very difficult to recognise people with their clothes on. I have been caught out on a number of occasions by people coming up to me and holding long and detailed conversations with me, while I stand there in bewilderment wondering who they are. Secondly, everyone in the class is in exactly the same position as you; they are there to learn to swim and are wearing a swimming costume (and probably won’t recognise you with your clothes on either). In addition, as we hire the whole pool for the lessons, there is no chance that Mark Foster or Sharron Davies will turn up unannounced to upstage you. Remember, swimming is probably the only sport that can save your life as well as being probably the most complete workout for your body. It is also fun. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to enjoy the pool and sea on holiday, go swimming with your kids or simply use the skill to get fit. It’s worth getting wet for. Michael Keeble

Maintenance for Community Conservation Projects

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has already planned maintenance for their 70 nature reserves throughout the county – have you planned yours for your local community meadows, ponds and woods? Here’s a quick reminder of what needs attention this time of year: Meadows - Sow meadow seed during September and October. If you managed to dodge the weather, meadows will have been cut during August and early September – remember to remove the cuttings! Cut again during October and November if there is a flush of new growth. Homes for Wildlife - Make and put up new bird boxes during the period September to February. Make hedgehog homes during September and October. Remove old nests from existing bird boxes, clean out and put back up before February. For ideas and suggestions on how to build homes for wildlife, pop in to the visitor reception at Idle Valley. Ponds - Clear fallen leaves and remove excess growth during September, October and November. Dredging work should be done during early autumn and not during winter because frogs and other animals will be hibernating in the mud. We are now preparing for the heavy-duty autumn/winter conservation works like coppicing, tree-felling and scrub bashing, so if you want to White dead-nettle help out on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Sundays with conservation from Laneham works, please contact James Simpson on 01777 713944 or email Trentside Meadow – jsimpson@nottswt.co.uk. If you would like to help in our visitor reception, children’s activities or in the café, then please contact Sara great for bees, Smith on 01777 713945 or email ssmith@nottswt.co.uk. caterpillars and a host of other insects Remember, we’re here to help - for advice about any aspect of conservation or protecting wildlife, then please call the team at Idle Valley Nature Reserve, North Road, Retford on 01777 713945.

LOCAL LADIES LAUNCH YORKSHIRE’S BIGGEST BUSINESS SHOW, 4 BUSINESS EXPO, IN DONCASTER ON 18TH OCTOBER, 2012 The biggest business show for anyone thinking about starting or expanding in business to raise the roof of the racecourse this autumn Doncaster will be playing host to the region’s biggest business show this autumn, when the very first 4 Business Expo event descends onto its racecourse on October 18 th, 2012, and over five thousand visitors are already expected to attend. Setup by Michelle Kirkbride and Kelly Allen co-founders of the 4Business Enterprise, and with assistance from Linda Walton, the event will see over two hundred stands plus three separate business shows all under one roof, which will transform the racecourse into a one stop business shop featuring everything needed to start or expand a business:  A complete work from home exhibition  Business seminars and high profile guest speakers  A networking event & a networking bar  A free crèche and children’s entertainment  Stand sitter service  Goody bags and products not available on the high street  Three business shows – the 4 Business Opportunities Show, the 4 Business Startup Show and The b2c Business Showcase. “What originally started out as a business opportunities event has now developed into a business expo thanks to all the interest we’ve generated, and we’re delighted to be launching it this year in Doncaster,” explains Kelly Allen. “We’re also really excited to have created something that little bit different in the business exhibition world thanks to the free crèche service we’ll be offering,” she continues. “Unfortunately, as working mums we’re all too well aware of how hard it is to start up a business or expand one whilst fitting it around a family, let alone trying to do it in today’s economic climate,” she goes on. “And so it was very important to us to host an event that will not only provide visitors with access to all the advice and support they need for their professional life, but will also take into account their personal one too.” Being a Community Interest Company and therefore non-profit, any proceeds will be fed back into the event hoped to become an annual one for the region. “Job opportunities now are so few and far between, that we need to help the unemployed into self-employment, as well as supporting SMEs to expand and grow, so we’d encourage anyone interested in starting or expanding a business to come along,” she says. “Entry’s free and there’ll be business opportunities and services, as well as a showcase area, seminars and networking, all under one roof for people to access. Plus, we’ve also made sure that the exhibitors can take advantage of all the resources available too with our stand sitter service, meaning someone can mind their stand for them, whilst they explore the expo.” The free crèche and stand sitter service will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis so please contact Kelly on 01302 515385 to book prior to the event. Everton Village Hall will be transformed into a theatre within a theatre for the set of this fast paced comedy about five women who inherit equal shares in a dilapidated theatre and their plans to bring it back to life. The intrepid quintet try various fund-raising schemes but their most ambitious is to hold a concert featuring a worldfamous star, who agrees to appear for no fee. The audience will see the “theatre” morph from a total wreck into a glittering performance venue, where an expectant sell out “audience” is waiting impatiently for the star act. However, plans go awry as the five would be impresarios race to keep the show on the road. Curtain Up! Will be staged in Everton Village Hall between Wednesday 24th and Saturday 27th October. THE EARL OF DONCASTER LAUNCHES GUINEA PIG NIGHT 2nd Thursday of each month sees diners consume, contemplate & choose what makes the grade No one really wants to be experimented on, but a local hotel has launched an event to show that being a guinea pig doesn’t necessarily have to be a glum experience – it can, in fact, be one filled with gastronomic delights. Guinea Pig Night, created by The Earl of Doncaster Hotel, will take place on the second Thursday of every month and diners attending, will not only be able to sample a beautifully cooked three course meal by a talented chef, but they’ll also have the final say as to what dishes make it onto the new menu. The catch? Guest diners won’t know what they’re going to get. “Creating a great menu and serving food of the highest quality are obviously what any hotel strives for but at The Earl, we really just want to develop a dining experience with a really personal aspect to it,” explains Fraser Wolstencroft, Hotel Manager. “So allowing diners to taste new dishes and make the final decision as to what goes on the new menu, we think, is the perfect way of achieving it,” he continues. “After all, it’s the public who choose to dine with us, so it’s only right that they participate in picking the menu we provide.” Served in Café Bar Concerto and £15 per person, including a Three course meal prepared by The Earl’s resident talented and rosette winning chef, Paul Thompson and a Glass of House Wine “After the recent refurbishment to restore the hotel to all the splendour of its original Art Deco roots, Café Bar Concerto is, without a doubt, a simply a stunning destination for any diner,” Fraser continues. “We really wanted to go that extra mile though and what better way to do it than creating not only a beautiful ambience, but also by serving a menu that they’ve helped to make themselves?” Guinea Pig Night takes place on the second Thursday of every month in Café Bar Concerto between 6pm and 10pm. Austerfield youngsters “get out and play” in new Jubilee play space Children and young people in Austerfield are being encouraged to get out and play thanks to a £46,000 grant which has been awarded to Austerfield Parish Council for new play facilities in the village. Over 250 local residents celebrated at a launch party on Saturday 8th September at the Austerfield Jubilee Play Space. The cash boost has been given by WREN, a not for profit business which awards grants to community projects from funds donated by Waste Recycling Group (WRG) to the Landfill Communities Fund. Councillor Robert Harrison, Chairman of Austerfield Parish Council said: “It is fantastic that WREN can make funds like this available to a small community like ours. Without the funding from WREN and our DMBC Ward Councillors we could never have provided this wonderful playground.” Cutting the ribbon to officially open the play space was young Willow Hartshorn age nine years. Willow said “The Park is great, it’s taken a lot of effort but was worth it. Everything is colourful and fun to play on and everyone in the village has been there. Parents can sit on the benches and talk to each other whilst kids play and we can have picnics on the grass.” Mike Snell, external affairs manager for WRG, said: “The funding for the Austerfield Jubilee Play Space which has been awarded by WREN, will create a real hub for the local community to come together. Play facilities are such an important part of building community spirit and can really help families build connections and friendships in their neighbourhood.” Instrumental in developing the project and the launch celebrations have been children, parents and grandparents, who have worked with parish councillors to contribute ideas, inspiration and effort to see the project to completion. Austerfield Parish Council would like to thank you all.

Introducing Rev. Jim Magee the new Methodist Minister for five churches around Doncaster, Cantley, Auckley, Bawtry, Rossington and Harworth. In 1975 I left Northern Ireland to train as a church minister, first in Edinburgh, then in 1977 Manchester, from where I graduated in 1980. Whilst in Manchester Jane and I met, in 1979 we were married. My first church was in Bramley Leeds, David our first son was born in December of 1980 in St. James’ Hospital. Over the years we have lived in Kent (where our second son Peter was born in 1984); Cumbria; Norfolk; Derbyshire, and now Doncaster. My interests are music, films, books, walking in the countryside, Dr.Who, and Strictly Come Dancing. Between us Jane and I have a very wide variety of DVD’s, CD’s, and books which range from crime fiction to poetry, and of course Dr. Who memorabilia. Besides my church work and activities, I have become since August the new Chaplain to Doncaster Rovers, this is something new and very exciting, especially on match days. Since 1989, (when I moved from The Nazarene Church into The Methodist Church), I have been researching the Celtic churches and their influence on the British Isles. As part of that research I have, and continue to use in my personal devotions and also my church services, prayers, poems and reflections created in a ‘Celtic style’. I also belong to a community that seeks to deepen personal and public prayer, especially using meditation technics such as silence. Like the early church leaders, we also seek to live by a discipleship rule of life, and a daily rhythm that is a combination of prayer, bible study and practical charitable works. The last area I worked in was around former Mining Communities in Derbyshire, so coming to my new role amongst my five churches continues that link. Over these next months I hope to get to meet, and get to know many of you through my work in the churches and the communities they seek to serve in God’s Name. May Peace, Hope, and Love be our experience personally and publically through God, Creator, Friend, and Life transformer. Rev. Jim Magee

If things go as anticipated, parking will be allowed (with the exception of near junctions and opposite High Meadows) on the southern side (ie Masonic Hall with the footpath) with NO PARKING on the northern side (ie in front of the bird beak fencing and beyond). Further information will be provided when available. Damaged street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc) should be reported to DMBC for action. Please remember that a direct line to DMBC at Bawtry Community Library is still available for you personally to report any matters that concern you to DMBC, the highway authority or by telephoning Doncaster Council on 736000. Market Hill Pay and display parking on the market hill car park will be extended to 10pm (2200 hours) (This was the original contract signed up to some years ago) and will become effective from 1 st November, 2012. Reflective signage and new pay and display meters will be provided. Current charges will remain the same. Consideration will also be given to ‘tick-over tariff’ of a night time to be effective also from 1st November, 2012 Gainsborough Road Toilets It is likely that the cleaning of the toilets will be carried out by a Council handyman (person), commencing in September, 2012. The toilets now have monitoring equipment installed following the recent attack on the operating system. The toilets are only open between the hours of 0800 & 1730. Airport & Tunnel Tech Complaints Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so that the complaints can be logged by the appropriate authority. The new contact email for Tunnel Tech complaints is: Amy.Ogden@bassetlaw.gov.uk

Youth Club Although we were assured that the Youth Club will operate on a fortnightly basis, from the Methodist Church Hall, THIS APPEARS NOT TO BE HAPPENING, and this situation will be addressed. It is also being requested that, to aid operation of the facility, suitable volunteers from the community are needed. If you feel you can offer sometime in this worthwhile venture, then please initially contact George Spencer on 01302 711464 – two hours on a Friday once a fortnight is the commitment required. Volunteers are desperately needed – Can you help? Council Vacancy Kate Sleight has resigned from the Council due to other commitments, creating a vacancy. This vacancy will be filled by an election taking place in October 2012. (The election process was instigated by ten residents who called for such). Although this is quite rightly democracy at work, there will be a large financial cost for this election, from the public purse, as it will be run independently from the Police Commissioner elections in November, 2012. It is hoped that residents on the electors register or those with a business in Bawtry will make the cost of the election worthwhile. The noticeboards will give full details when available as tight schedules need to be adhered to. USEFUL NUMBERS Robin Hood Airport – to report severe aircraft noise 01302 623499.
