(sorry to mention Christmas). It has been a period of change in our household, firstly as we modernise our home, getting rid of the 70’s/80’s fixtures and décor and turning it slowly into a modern family home, with a lot of dust and mess along the way. Secondly, as we get used to a slightly quieter home after taking to our daughter to start at University last weekend. It is early days yet but it seems she is having a fantastic time! If like me you are planning to be organised this year and not have that busy last-minute rush then you might want to start looking through these pages and getting things booked in. Everyone from decorators through to dog groomers and from chimney sweeps through to curtain makers, get increasingly busy as the festive season gets nearer, some are already taking bookings for 2018! Whatever you want to get done before Christmas, be that lose weight, shop for gifts and supplies locally, get your accounts sorted or revamp your home or garden, or any of 1001 other things, you are sure to find someone to help you in this magazine. RETIRED? JOIN THE DU3A

If you have retired recently, or not so recently, and you have not heard of the Doncaster U3A then read on. Doncaster University of the Third Age offers a variety of groups who meet regularly to learn and socialise. There are over 35 groups with more starting all the time. For example, there is Theatre and Discussion, Card making, French, History, Striders, Criminology and For the love of nature, to list a sample. Members bring their hobbies or pastimes to the organisation and offer to share them with others. The U3A is an educational self-help group where people develop their skills. There is no entrance exam nor is a qualification needed and none given. There is a minimum charge for Membership and

for some Group meetings. These meetings are held during the day. Members can join one or more groups to try something new or revive an old hobby. There is a monthly General Meeting with a guest speaker giving you an opportunity to sit back and listen. It also allows prospective new members to attend and find out more about the DU3A. “I heard about U3A through a friend and have loved it since.” Anne. “I like being involved with other people and I have been able to learn new things.” David. “I missed working and U3A has given me opportunities to socialise as well as keeping my brain active.” Sheila. community Community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, The weather at the moment is driving everyone to distraction, the poor dogs don’t know if they are coming or going. One minute they are laid in the sunshine the next they are being rained on. Well at least we are all still in one piece unlike the poor people and some animals in America. They sometimes get overlooked because they don’t show themselves in the correct light and appear stressed. Our kennel carers work with any dog that has issues until they are ready to be re-homed. It is always worth coming to the Sanctuary and discussing your requirements with our carers as they all know the dogs in their care better than anyone. You would be surprised how many people come to see us with specific requirements and take a completely different dog home. We also have some beautiful cats, some that we would prefer to be kept indoors and others depending on your location that will be happy as outdoor cats. Penny our cattery Manager will be happy to discuss the cats in her care with you. The cattery has recently received funding from The Jean Sainsbury Trust to upgrade our cattery which we are very excited about. However, until we start to upgrade we will need to match fund so that will mean more bucket collecting and fund raising. The diary is full to overflowing with fund raising efforts on the run up to Christmas so we are hoping that our public will be supportive. Now some dates for your diary. Boston Park Farm Tearooms & Maize Boston Park Farm Tearooms and Maize Maze is a fantastic place to take young children to play in the indoor and outdoor play areas. The Maize Maze is open until the end of October, 5km of paths which, being only 5 feet wide, give the feeling of exploring through the jungle. Open from 10am until 5pm at the weekend and until 4pm on weekdays, admission to the farm and maize maze is £6 each for adults and children (3+), £3 for toddlers (1&2 yrs) and £20 for a family ticket (any 4 adults & children), babies under 1yr are free. You don’t have to do the maize maze when you visit though and entry to the Farm only is £1 for adults, £5 for children (3 – 12 yrs.) and £3 for toddlers (1&2 yrs)

play areas and they have just opened a brand new indoor soft play area suitable for under 8’s which is brilliant for showery days. There is also a new indoor sandpit barn and a bouncy castle which is open all the time (weather permitting). Shriek Week runs from the 23rd – 31st October when there will be a pumpkin hunt around the maize, pumpkins for sale, pumpkin carving, free crafts and lots of other activities throughout the week. Then on 29th, 30th, and 31st October they open from 6-9pm each evening for the fantastically amazing Shriek Nights. Go along and hunt around the maize for pumpkins but also watch out for other scary surprises too! Each evening there will be hot/cold drinks, BBQ, a disco plus other fun and games.

There are all the animals to see and feed, including alpacas, goats, donkeys, sheep, chickens and pigs. Weekends at 11:30 and 2:30 they get the rabbits and guinea pigs out for a cuddle. Plus, there are lots of outdoor

ingredients 8 rashers of smoked pancetta 2 x 150g white fish fillet (cod or ling) 2 springs of rosemary 1 x 250g sachet of cooked lentils e.g. Jamie Oliver Lovely Lentils 200g spinach 1,tbsp red wine vinegar 2,tbsp extra virgin olive oil

method 1

Lay out 4 rashers of pancetta, slightly overlapping them. Place the fish fillet on top, season with black pepper, then roll and wrap the pancetta, and repeat.

Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors

Another busy month, meeting residents and dealing with individual concerns and problems as well as making progress with issues that impact the whole community. More details are provided below. We hope you find our updates useful but please let us know if there are particular issues that you would like us to mention in this update.

with Town Councillors which made for an interesting evening with a range of questions being asked about the footpaths at Market Hill, empty shops and the dos and don’ts of having property in a conservation area. The Town Council was joined by Ross from the BRA (Visit Bawtry) and Martin from BARRS and it is really good how well all the different groups are working together to make the Town even better. Anyone can attend the monthly parish council meeting and at the beginning of every meeting, there is an opportunity for the public to ask questions.

Austerfield The 30mph sign extension is now in place with the lights working. Residents have said that they are pleased with the difference that it is making, but I am aware that not all residents are happy with the changes and I have directed them to the Council’s complaints procedures. We realise that everyone is not as nosey as we are as we scan all new planning notices or planned Traffic Regulation order but it is always worth looking at DMBCs website if you do see any notices on lampposts to find out what the plans are and how this could impact on you.

Our Community Assets

We have mentioned the Mayflower ship coming home in previous updates and it was fantastic that the children from the Holiday Club were able to spend the last day of the holiday club working with DMBC officers to finish off the flower beds around the ship. The children really enjoyed themselves and it was so good to get them involved in their heritage.

The bus service in Austerfield – we would welcome your views on the Monday and Wednesday service that has been running now for a long time. Have you used it? What did you think of the service? We would welcome your views on this. Parking Concerns – Pemberton and Top Street/ Doncaster Road These proposals are still open for consultation. Please do look at the Council’s website to see what is proposed or contact us if you would like a copy. Please do take the time to respond to this whether you are supporting it or not because once a decision is made it cannot be altered or extended to include different areas. Bawtry Town Council Meeting Community Meeting The Town Council had their 2nd Community Forum meeting in September – an opportunity for residents to ask the Town Councillors any questions that they have about the work of the Town Council and how the precept is spent. It was good to see the Community Sports Pavilion getting some excellent publicity in the Free Press. It is great that the pavilion is being well used, with yoga, Pilates and baby massage as well as a venue for parties for all ages. Also, filming took place recently at another one of our fantastic community assets – Bawtry Community Library for a well-known TV programme that is filmed in Doncaster.

As well as the annual Christmas extravaganza on the 26th November, the Sunday before (19th November) Bawtry for the first time will be the venue for the Illuminate procession. There will be lantern making, a procession, projection of the 400 (to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower with the Pilgrim Fathers setting sail) and a display and a reception in The Crown. Further details will be provided in the November update but please put it in your diary as it will be a lovely family event which has been made possible by Bawtry Town Council and DMBCs cultural services. Bawtry Town Council - OCTOBER 2017 Market Hill Residents will be aware that the footpath along Market Place has fallen into a poor state of disrepair. Although classified as a public highway it’s not adopted, so DMBC have no responsibility to repair or ensure that it’s safe. The Town Council don’t own or have responsibility for the footpath but have agreed to undertake emergency repairs on a without prejudice basis. A contractor was approved at the September meeting and the Council expects that the worst areas will shortly be tackled to ensure residents can safely walk along this busy stretch of highway. BTC is still seeking a long-term solution with DMBC to enable the footpath to be formally adopted. DMBC have confirmed they will adopt the footpath and maintain it in the future if a suitable scheme can be funded to bring the area up to the required standard. The Town Council will therefore be working with DMBC and businesses fronting the footpath to see if the entire footpath can be replaced in due course.

Events The August Bank Holiday Drivers Pageant event was very well attended with Mr Tulley, one of the organisers, attending the September Council meeting to address members. It was noted that the event was well received but still experienced some traffic management problems due to staffing issues. Historic problems with speeding were greatly reduced however. It was anticipated that paid stewarding would be sought at any future event. Local retailers appeared pleased with the extra business generated and it’s hoped by the Town Council that businesses that benefit from the event can make contributions to support it in the future. Members will be considering approval of the event for 2018 at the October meeting together with a “Pedal Car GP” possibly during the May Bank Holiday. The Town Council is additionally supporting the forthcoming Illuminate Event on the 19th November commencing at 4pm. The event will start with a candle lighting service at St Helena’s Church, Austerfield followed by a Lantern Parade through Bawtry. There will be entertainment provided by the Phoenix Theatre and the Quirky Choir at the Civic Service in St Nicholas’ Church with a drinks reception with guest speakers at The Crown Hotel.

Grants The Town Council has powers under the Localism Act to provide small grants to local organisations and individuals. At the September meeting members were 54 BAWTRY TODAY

pleased to provide a grant to Bawtry Town Football Club for new goalposts so they can safely start the new season. Members additionally agreed a grant for Bawtry Action for Recreational Sports (BARS) to fund play park repairs at Wharf Street.

Community Forum A Community Forum meeting was held on the 6th September at The Crown Hotel. Representatives from the Retailers Association (BRA), Bawtry Action for Recreational Sports (BARS) and the Residents Group (BRG) kindly attended to address any questions from residents. Although attendance levels were low several issues were raised and discussed informally including the activities currently being undertaken to the Town Council, local unoccupied buildings and issues with broadband and mobile signals.

Highways Members have agreed to approach SYPTE for a bus shelter on the eastern side of the High Street and are continuing to report highways issues to DMBC. The Town Council has also sought consent for additional litter bins which we hope to be installed in due course.

Boundary Signs Further to the boundary signs being installed at the entrances to the town, the Council is now seeking planning permission to have ornate sponsorship plaques approved. Any business or organisations who want to advertise on one of the 5 plaques available should contact the clerk to the council at bawtrytowncouncil@ gmail.com. Annual fees will be in the sum of £1000.

Last but not least.... Residents will no doubt have seen the local Council handymen working diligently around the town keeping it clean and tidy. Unfortunately David Shaw, one of our employees has decided to retire in September. The Council members wish to sincerely thank Mr Shaw for all his hard work and support over the years and wish him all the best for the future.
