❄ BIGGER R & BETTNE THA EVER!

October again already, for me 2019 is flying by. No sooner have the children returned to school, then Halloween is upon us and the countdown to Christmas begins! My usual October reminder is that if you wish to be organised this Christmas then now is the time to start searching through these pages and get things booked in. Everyone gets increasingly busy as the festive season gets nearer – many are already taking bookings for 2020. Whatever you want to get done before Christmas, be that shop for supplies and gifts, revamp your home, lose weight, sort your accounts or any of 101 other things, you are sure to find someone to help you in this magazine. Just don’t forget to tell advertisers where you found them please! The November issue will be delivered to you late October, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th October. Remember we are heading into the busy Pre-Christmas season so please plan ahead and get the details of your events and fundraisers to me in good time so I can ensure they are promoted for you. Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine.

Doncaster Spanish Society Presents...

COMMUNITY

T

Doncaster Spanish Society will be meeting on Friday 18 October at the Doncaster School for the Deaf, Leger Way, Doncaster, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in the Eastfield Restaurant. T

After the long summer break the Club returned, raring to go, and ready for more training and more galas to attend. First up was the Sherwood Colliery Robin Hood meet held at Ponds Forge, to which we sent 21 swimmers, some of whom swam for the first time in a licensed gala. Together, they swam in 69 races and achieved a 67% personal best rate, which is a good achievement post-summer-break. Two of our swimmers were awarded medals (well done to Harry King and Aimee Aly-Weston), and one more of our swimmers achieved a County Qualifying Time (well done to Max Fisher). Over the coming months we have more galas to attend in the bid to improve our times and to obtain those County Qualifying Times before the end of the year. Each year we appoint a Club captain and we are pleased to announce the Club Captain for this year is Abigail Foster, ably supported by Vice Captains Liam Willis, Holly Foster and Katie Wells. Thanks go to retirees Tyler Gibson who continues to support the Club and to Dominic Gillow who is now part of our coaching team. The Club also recently supported the fundraising activities and Open Day held at Bircotes Leisure Centre raising money for Weston Park charity (photograph shows Head Coach Ericka Willis and Chairperson Mieke Foster).

If you are interested in Spanish culture and language, please come and join us. Our guest speaker will be Ana Gonzalez who will give a talk on:

A Historic Journey of Faith in Spain (Recorrido histórico de la fe en España) This will be an illustrated talk in Spanish and in English about some of the important religious events that have shaped Spanish culture and identity from the 1st century up to the present day. All are welcome. New members (£18 p.a./ couples £30 p.a.) and visitors (£4). Light refreshments are provided, and there is ample free car parking. For more information contact Jean 01709 812440 or Jackie 01302 344822

Festive Craft Markets Hand Crafted, Individual, Gifts Harworth & Bircotes Town Council Town Hall, Scrooby Road, DN11 8JP

And finally, we were delighted to receive our SwimMark accreditation. SwimMark is SwimEngland’s recognised kite-mark for the development of effective, ethical and sustainable Clubs. This involves a lot of hard work, especially for a small Club and is a great achievement... yet again. Many thanks to everyone on the Committee who worked so hard to deliver this. Even though we are a small Club, we are continually making progress.... we gain results at every gala we attend, be that PBs or County Times, but more importantly in developing confidence, satisfaction and enjoyment of our swimmers. There are many smiling faces, and we try our utmost to uphold our motto: Swim, Enjoy, Achieve. If you would like to visit our Club, please email the Club Secretary for more information and to arrange a trial, on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com

Wonderful news!

At the end of August we received an anonymous donation of £10,000 towards the biopsy machine. This was extremely generous and our very grateful thanks to the donor(s). Our stall at Auckley Show made £324. After an early shower thankfully the sun shone for the rest of the day. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Intake and Wheatley Pub Watch donated £700 last month. Our thanks to all involved and for their continuing support. We received £3,500 from Wheatley Golf Club and would like to thank the organisers and everyone who

donated or helped in any way. Don’t forget to make a note of our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre which will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please get in touch if you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer.

Raff is a playful man who walks lovely on the lead but may get a little excited to get out and about to begin with. He is clean in his kennel but may need more house training in a home. Raff gets super excited to see you in the mornings, so much that he gets a little drooly! He knows some basic tricks such as; ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ and will need further training to keep this up.

COMMUNITY BAWTRY PHOENIX THEATRE

Upcoming Events New Season 2019/20

Local animals need you. T

Now the excitement of summer has passed, your thoughts may be turning to starting something new and challenging to fill your time. Volunteering for a local charity is

a fantastic way to meet new people and learn new skills. RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre, near Bawtry, has some vacancies, which may appeal to you. The local RSPCA is looking for a Trustee, who can make lasting links with local businesses providing opportunities for the Animal Centre to gain support for their vital rehabilitation and rehoming work. If you have a strong network of local business contacts, feel passionately about our work fighting animal cruelty and could provide the link between the Animal Centre and local business, then you could help the charity expand further. Your volunteering skills may lie in a more practical direction? The Centre would love to hear from anyone who can turn their hand to gardening and general maintenance tasks. The site is based in a rural area, which needs round the year attention. The time and attention you could give the grounds will be key in maintaining the high standards the charity has for its Centre. If you are interested, please send an email to info@rspcadrb.org.uk and the Animal Centre looks forward to hearing from you. The Animal Centre team re-homes hundreds of rescue animals each year. The charity’s mission is to rehabilitate and rehome vulnerable animals and this rehabilitation and re-homing work relies on kind donations from the public. Proceeds from events that the local branch of the RSPCA organises and donations/sales at its charity shops provide the necessary funding. Visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk for more information.

Dear Friends. This year particularly, I have become more aware of the gift of the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. I think it may have started with the beautiful early spring which followed a very mild winter. Cast your minds back to the blossom which seemed impossibly to better the blossom of Spring 2018 (the like of which I had never seen before.) I remember driving through our village where the cherry blossom lay so thickly on the ground that the tarmac was transformed into a pink petal carpet, patch after patch, as I drove past dozens of trees in a floral ‘snow storm.’ The gardens of Japan could not have matched our fragrant display. Then, of course, we experienced the early summer heatwave which was so lovely to start with but soon became something else entirely when it became too hot to travel, work and sleep comfortably and when the health of the elderly, young children and animals was threatened by the relentlessly mounting temperatures. It helped to bear the extreme heat knowing that it would end eventually with the onset of crisp mornings, cool nights and refreshing rain to refill reservoirs and water butts.

T

which will in turn give way to frosty mornings and the promise of snow. Let us thank God for the gift of our seasons which make our lives more varied and richer. I offer you a blessing written by my friend Ruth Burgess of the Iona Community: Walk with us God, through sharp frosty days and bright crunchy leaves into winter. Rest with us by warm firesides and tell us stories into the night. Take us outside and show us the stars and fill us with wonder. Bless us and our families, our friends and our neighbours with love and with courage. And never let us forget the stranger who needs to share our wealth, our shelter and our hope. AMEN Yours in Christ,

Alice Curry,

Pastor of Tickhill, Harworth and Bawtry Methodist Churches

It will not surprise you to know that I believe that the order and variety and refreshment of each season is a gift from God. You probably know the bible story of Noah and his Ark and the animals ‘that went in two by two?’ But perhaps you are not as aware of the ending of the story. God promises that ‘while earth remains there will always be a time for planting and a time for harvest. There will always be cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.’ (Genesis Chapter 8, verse 22) As our warm summer days change slowly and seamlessly into the colourful beauty of Autumn

A New Look for Retford Hub.

T

Soon, you will be able to visit us at the Hub and see our newly refitted shop. The shop will be closed for the week beginning 16 September while the work is being done. The redesign gives us more space for our 140 local artisans to display their work beautifully. In addition there are improvements in every area with better seating and more space in the café, improved lighting, better picture hanging and many other changes. Our tourist area is redesigned with a new interactive display and more local souvenirs, ideal for Christmas. Come and see what our volunteers, with help from the King & Miller, have achieved. The King and Miller, which is a Sizzler pub, is funding the refurbishment through the Sizzling Carling Community Action award. The Hub is proud of having been chosen to receive this major award.

are proud to bring the inspired movie hit

During the summer we welcomed an influx of visitors to Retford, who loved our town, remarking on the variety of shops and the welcome they received from local people. Explore Retford and you will find a town that for the most part is bucking the trend of closures that is decimating many northern towns. Visitors enjoyed the Pilgrim Museum at the Hub and we were pleased to welcome some large coach groups. If you haven’t visited yet, then you must.

“The Graduate”

The exhibition by well-known artist Derrick Spence continues this month with a wonderful display of his work in the Gallery.

JOIN US ON OUR LOCAL WALKS DURING OCTOBER

Autumn is upon us with colder mornings and the possibility of mist, giving a touch of eerie atmosphere to countryside walking. A Catch-Up from Wise Owl A chill in the air and nights are drawing in fast. Easier flight time for me - and longer to find food. The seasons certainly are a-changing. Lots of changes that I’m finding hard to keep up with to be honest. Watching the moon from my perch last night I realised change is something we owls and you humans will all have to cope with, like it or not. Our home planet is struggling. Poor Earth. All this shaking and quaking over near Preston. Over 120 seismic events in just a few days. One measured 2.9 on the scale! And to think this area is already licensed for fracking. That means your homes are at risk from cracks. And worse. It really doesn’t bear thinking about. But more and more people are thinking about it. And more importantly, taking action. Talking about it. Joining groups. Researching the facts like Fracking and Health. Going to talks like the Dr Ian Fairlie event - eye opening to say the least. What’s below ground should stay below ground if you ask me. There are other ways to stay warm. Safer all round. Twit-Twoo for now, Wise Owl x

LI O NS in Bawtry Gattison House trip to Cleethorpes On Friday 16 th August TIckhill and DIstrict LIons Club took residents and carers from Gattison House, Rossington to Cleethorpes. The weather forecast was grim but nothing could dampen the spirit of the party as we set off. Luckily the rain held off and allowed everyone to walk up and down the promenade taking in the sea air. The highlight of the day was our lunch, fish and chips on the Pier, wonderful! At 3 o,clock we returned to our coach ready for our journey home. The rain which had kindly avoided us now attacked the coach relentlessly. Somewhere near sunny Scunthorpe one of our windscreen wipers surrendered to the rain. We had to park up and await a replacement wiper blade. Lesser mortals would have been despondent at this point, but not us! An impromptu singalong ensued with old favourites like Pack Up Your Troubles and We’ll Meet Again being sung with gusto. We are not expecting a recording contract for our efforts but it certainly passed the time. We arrived home an hour late but everyone agreed that a great time had been had by all.

The Pastor’s Pen Are we prepared to listen? T

As I write, none of us know what October will bring for our nation. Will Boris achieve the seemingly impossible and conclude a deal with Brussels which gains the support of parliament; or will there be a crash out without a deal? Will there be – even yet – a general election on 15th October; or will there be a “people’s vote” to allow us all to vote again on a deal or no-deal? The confrontational language used by politicians and public figures has not abated. More and more of us are switching off to news and current affairs programmes. Both in Parliament (before it was suspended) and on BBC’s Question Time there has been chaos and confusion rather than dialogue. Nobody seems to be prepared to listen to what others are saying. Both Speaker Bercow and Fiona Bruce have had unenviable tasks. This is very sad as it permeates every level of society. We don’t seem to be able to have “civilised” conversations on subjects that people feel so passionate about. I have talked to many local people recently who would like to be better informed and to be able to have calm debate and considered dialogue. But to do this we need to engage with and, even, respect those with different points of view. Are we prepared to listen more and shout less? If we stop talking and are patient, we might be surprised to find that we have more in common than we were prepared to admit. Mark Twain said, “If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two tongues and one ear.”

36

The Bible tells us that we are all made in God’s image but sometimes that image may be distorted by sin. But we could start by valuing each other as people reflecting God (even if we disagree with them) and then trying to understand them. The tone of our voice and openness to consider ideas and the whole picture are important. But listening is not just a matter of using our ears, but also our eyes. Non-verbal communication through body language is also very significant.

Who could doubt the message that Jacob Rees-Mogg was seeking to convey? King Solomon wrote in the book of Proverbs: “… let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” Wisdom indeed. And if we do so in our communities, then we might become reconcilers and peacemakers. When Jesus addressed his followers (recorded by Matthew) he said: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” The Message version puts it this way: “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.” This month, are we prepared to listen and then discover who we really are?

It’s said that you can’t have too much of a good thing and this evening’s speaker proved this old adage to be quite true. Rachel Barrowcliffe came to talk to us last autumn and gave some extraordinary advice regarding ‘lasagne layering’ (a method of planting bulbs in a pot) and tonight she gave us all some very timely tips on dealing with our late summer gardens. Rachel works at Hodsock Priory and is head gardener at the Tropical Butterfly House and has over thirty years’ experience working with gardens of varying size and design. Her guidance on pruning fruit trees, looking after and repairing our lawns and caring for our flowering shrubs was informally and entertainingly presented and based on her enormous practical knowledge and skills. Rachel gave us invaluable recommendations on garden pests and how to deal with them in an environmentally friendly way and how to encourage

Market Hill The fruit and vegetable stall has now been installed on Market Hill and a retailer had been approved by the Town Council to operate the facility. It is therefore hoped that the return of this service will be of great benefit to local residents in the very near future. Members have also agreed to contribute to the Bawtry Retailers Association Christmas event with a grant of £3500 which will fund the big wheel on Market Hill. Funding of new holders for Christmas trees/flags etc have also been agreed in the sum of £800.

Recreational Matters Maintenance of the cemetery has been a priority for the Council this year with significant removal of overgrown weeds tackled in the last couple of months. Further improvements of older graves and kerb sets are underway which will greatly improve the overall look of the cemetery, bringing it up to a much better standard. Members have agreed to fund a banner in support of the Wildflower Project on Thorne Road and look forward to this being developed and bringing some welcome colour to this area.

the Memorial Sports Ground and the Council, as landlord of the facility, are working with interested parties to minimise disruption to enable the continued smooth operation of the facility by the charity.

Events Members have agreed to hold a Christmas Residents Lunch again this year at Bawtry Hall. Applications will be available on the Council website and at the former post office on Station Road. The closing date for receipt of applications will be 26th October, with successful applicants being notified on or around the 13th November. The lunch will be held on the 3rd December 2019.

Neighbourhood Plan The Bawtry Neighbourhood Plan was put to a referendum on Thursday 12th September and was approved by electors. The policies in the Plan, together with other local and national policies, will now be taken into account by the planning authority in all new applications.

Meetings The next Council Meeting is on Tuesday 8th October at 7.00pm at the New Hall. Residents & Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings. There is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council during the meeting. Please come along & get involved.

Floodlighting has been restored to the play area at Wharf Street and repairs made to the play equipment. Thanks is given to Bawtry Action for Recreational & Sports (BARS), who are responsible for the play area, for undertaking these repairs. Recent changes to BARS staffing and trustee membership has led to some disruption at

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS

RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

Next Litter Pick – Saturday 5 October At 10Am Leaving From The Hope Centre, Pinders Court, High Street

As the autumn approaches, it was good to attend the Austerfield annual show organised by the parish council. A lot of hard work had gone into organising it and there was many activities for children to do as well as stalls and entries for the various classes. Thank you to residents who contacted me after my last update and to the people who responded to the various planning applications.

Information about DMBC, Bawtry Town Council and Austerfield Parish Council

Residents are sometimes unsure about which council is responsible for what in Bawtry and what you can contact us about. Doncaster Council is responsible for highways, verges, paths, cleaning, bins apart from Market Hill and Wharf Street play area and has a lease with BARRS for the MSG. So, as councillors we can deal with all these issues as well as drainage and flooding issues. Austerfield Council is responsible for the play area and memorial area. Also though, we can assist with anti-social behaviour, work with the police to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour. In addition, Doncaster is responsible for all children’s and adults services as well as St Leger housing. So as councillors we can deal with all of these things so please do contact us and we will do our best to help. If you are not sure if we can help, do contact us and we will let you know if we cannot but tell you who can.

Wildflower meadow Thorne Road

It is great to start with a positive story that has come from residents to deal with a problem that they had. Many of you will have seen the signs on the embankment at Thorne Road asking for DMBC not to spray weed killer. I met with residents who were keen to develop a Wildflower meadow rather than the unsightly bank, which is there now. DMBC has issued the residents with a license and the planting has started. To explain what is happening when the meadow is in development; the Town Council have agreed to fund banners. If you are interested in doing something similar in your area, please do get in touch.

Neighbourhood Plan results

I attended the count of the Neighbourhood Plan referendum, which was held on 12 September. 490 residents voted, with 411 saying Yes to the Plan and

46

79 saying No. This was a turnout of 17.72%, which is lower than a local or general election but is good for a Neighbourhood Plan. Town Councillors and interested residents, worked hard to produce the plan over many years so it was great to see it approved. What does it mean? When any planning decisions are considered in Bawtry, the Plan will need to be taken into account by Doncaster Council.

Thorne road streetlights

The lampposts that were removed are going to be put back – they are currently in design at Doncaster Council and the street light repaired. Ivor Greer has been concerned about this for some time and has been in contact with Rachael and the council directly so it is good that this work will be done.

Kingswood close

Work has taken place over the last few weeks to improve the play area, make the area around the bungalows safer and cut back the hedges near the garage. Other work is ongoing. I know that parents have complained about the play area and that due to its current state they are going elsewhere. If you have ideas about how the play area can be improved, such as seating for parents or different rides, please do contact us, as we want your ideas as we have some funding that may be available.

Do you have a family member or friend with Dementia?

Get creative and be in the moment are activities that are designed for people with dementia and their families. There is something happening throughout the week including music, nostalgia and memory based sessions. Some of the sessions include swing, sing and cake, choir, play club. For more information please contact either Cast on 303959 or The Point on 341662.

Overgrown hedges

The hedge at the cemetery has now been cut back. Doncaster Council’s enforcement team have met with Anchor Housing regarding the hedge on Doncaster Road opposite the library, which is their responsibility to maintain. Visits have also been made to private houses to ask for overgrown hedges to be cut back. At the Town Council meeting, concern was raised about the footpath on Gainsborough Road and this has now been passed to the Street Scene team for action along with a request for more daffodils.

COMMUNITY

Bawtry Residents Group News Bars (Bawtry Action For recreation and Sport) Held an Annual general meeting at the New Hall in Bawtry on the 29th of August, this is believed to be the first one that had been advertised on social media inviting residents to attend. Unfortunately, only three members of the public were in attendance to witness what turned out to be a very ‘lively’ and informative meeting. However, given the ‘robust’ exchange of views between some of the Trustees it soon became very evident to all those in attendance that there was a demonstrable difference of opinion between the Trustees on numerous issues. Two days later the BRG were made aware that four of the BARS Trustees had resigned, leaving only four to continue with the running of the charity and the Memorial Sports Ground (MSG). The current Chair of BARS (Mr A Young) reassured the Bawtry Town Council (BTC) and the BRG that they hoped to continue to operate the facility as near normal as possible and that they had not cancelled any bookings or transferred them to a different venue despite rumours to the contrary. Obviously the BRG wish them every success and have offered to assist them where ever they can. The BRG have also agreed to the Trustees request to become the residents representative on the MSG operations group and hopefully new Trustees will be appointed in the near future (further details of any appointments/changes will be in the next issue of this magazine). Finally, the BRG would also like to thank the outgoing Trustees for all their hard work and wish them well for the future. What a fantastic day Sunday the 25th of August was for Bawtry, the car pageant was one of the best for many a years and was attended by many thousands of visitors. The BRG would like to thank Gordon Tulley for organising this event

once again with the support and help of Bawtry Town Council, Bawtry Retail association and the Bawtry Residents group. Following the great success of last year’s inaugural Christmas lunch for 150 of the towns senior citizens, Bawtry Town Council have confirmed that the event will be taking place again this year on the 3rd of December at Bawtry Hall, the doors to the hall will be opening from 12 midday with the meal commencing at 1pm and will finish at approximately at 3:30pm. If you wish to be considered for one of the 150 places available you will need to submit an application form, the forms are available from Pastimes and Presents’ (the old post office) and online at the BTC website. We would also like to say thank you to Mr Craig Dowie and Mr Jason Cooper (Crown Hotel and Bawtry Hall) for their help making this a great occasion for the elderly of Bawtry, also the Bawtry Air Cadets who will also be helping on the day. Arrangements have also been made for Christmas carols to be sung before the start of the meal by the children of our local primary school and also additional entertainment from a local artist who regularly performs at venues around Bawtry. Representatives from the BTC and the BRG will be present so do not be shy and go and say hello to them, I promise they do not bite. It was very good news from the BTC at the last Council meeting regarding the overgrown graves in the cemetery, work will now continue with the removal of overgrown vegetation and where necessary the infill of gravel where this is required. The new Market Hill fruit and vegetable stall will be in place very shortly and BTC have selected someone to run this (the name of the stall holder will be announced very shortly). The BRG wish the new proprietors of the stall every success and would urge all residents to utilise this community asset.

COMMUNITY

BAWTRY It seems amazing that we are nearly in October already and the weather is beginning to have that autumnal feel. We were lucky to have a fascinating talk on the ‘ Heritage Trail’ by Rupert Atkinson in July. Rupert explained what a World Heritage site is and talked about three very different ones. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation is a specialised agency of the UN with 193 countries as members. It has 1121 sites world wide with 33 in the UK. The aim is to preserve sites of human construction or naturally occurring which are of outstanding value to humanity. Rupert told us about 3 very different sites- Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Hadrians Wall and Durham Cathedral and Castle in the UK. Our August meeting was held on a beautiful day at our Presidents house. Angela hosted a well attended coffee morning with lots of chatter and laughter- along with lots of wonderful WI cakes of course! Our September meeting will be another fascinating, if sobering one. Richard Venables will be talking about Tsunami Recoveries, telling us about his part in developing systems to recover and identify the victims of the dreadful events in the Indian Ocean in 2004. In October we will be hearing about Arabella Stuart,” the queen who never was” and in November we will hold our annual meeting and have an opportunity to have a go at some Christmas crafts. We would be delighted to welcome visitors or new members to any of our meetings. Please contact our secretary Roberta on 07840729545 for further information.

BAWTRY GARDEN CLUB

The members enjoyed our September talk which was all about the cocoa bean. Our speaker came from the ‘Chocolate Drop’ in Lincolnshire, and gave us a history/ geography lesson about cocoa, including the possible health benefits of drinking cocoa, and using cocoa butter on the skin. We were also treated to lots of free tasters of various varieties of the chocolate they make. I can report that the recent Garden Show was a great success, with all categories being well supported, and lots of people attending in the afternoon to view the entries, peruse the stalls and take refreshments. For the first time, thanks to a generous cash donation by Bawtry Town Council, we have been able to present a trophy to the overall winner of each category: Fruit and Vegetables: Flowers and Plants: Baking: Preserves: Arts: Crafts: Photography: Children 4-7yrs: Children 8-11yrs:

Arron Botterill Margaret Byrne Susan Brearley Ena Holland Joan Hall Janet Winter Gail Basilio Elsie Thorlby-Coy Iris Thorlby-Coy

The Elizabeth Cruddas Trophy, (presented to the entrant with the highest number of points overall) was won by Peter Wainwright, well done to him! A very big thank you to everyone who helped on the day. Without the stewards, helpers in the kitchen, ladies on the raffle and tombola, as well as the stall holders coming along, we wouldn’t be able to host the event, so we are very grateful for all the help received. Three raffle prizes from the day are unclaimed. The numbers are 107, 109, and 111. If anyone has a winning ticket, please contact our Chairperson on the number below. On Tuesday, 1st October, the talk is about Cammassias, meeting at the usual time of 7.00pm in the Methodist Church Hall. Please contact our Chairperson, Sylvia, for further information, on 01302 719015.
