Welcome to
the SEPTEMBER 2014 edition
“A late summer garden has a tranquillity found no other time of the year.” - William Longgood
It seems that my decision to mention our multifamily Youth Hostel trip last month tempted fate! I said I had my fingers crossed for sunshine, however unfortunately, it rained for much of Saturday and although the sun came out for a lovely stroll around Castleton in the afternoon this was followed by thunder and lightening – which started 10minutes into our visit to the open air swimming pool in Hathersage and led to our early evacuation! We still had a fantastic time, and beautiful weather on the Sunday led us all up Mam Tor with amazing views across the Peak District. Sunshine wasn’t in short supply when I took my daughters out to Lanzarote a few days later, for a sneaky extra holiday that we managed to squeeze in this year, a great time was had by all! By the time you read this I will have also have been on our main family holiday – more about that next month, I am not planning on tempting fate again! The October issues will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

LARGER PREMISES More choice… Bigger value… Same great service… Shabby chic may be all the rage in home interiors, but when it comes to carpets, no one likes the threadbare look. If you spend your time wishing you had something plusher to sink your toes into, now is the time to freshen up your floors with a visit to Distinctive Flooring & Blinds. With 30 years’ experience in the industry, owner Andy Summers is well placed to impart his expert advice. He is passionate about providing great products and a friendly service to all his customers.
Once you’ve chosen your new floor covering the team are more than happy to move furniture or uplift old flooring. Nothing is too much hassle. In recent years, the business branched out and added quality, made-to-measure blinds to its portfolio. The move to bigger premises has allowed them to expand their range, which includes stylish, contemporary and traditional blinds to suit any interior. Verticals, wooden slatted, roller, and roman blinds are available and, with carpets, floor coverings and blinds all under one roof, you can guarantee a perfect colour match for your home. Call or drop into the showroom today to see for yourself the fantastic range and service Distinctive Flooring & Blinds can offer.
The family-run business moved from previous premises in Warmsworth to its current location in Balby in June. The new shop is five times larger, which allows Andy to offer a greater range of quality products. The shop, on Springwell Lane, was previously Connoisseurs Carpets. They offer a free estimating and planning service with noobligation quotes. “I am a firm believer in being honest with people and would never sell someone flooring that wouldn’t work for them – it needs to be fit for purpose,” said Andy. “This is shown in the fact that seven out of ten of our customers are repeats or recommendations.” “We are very competitively priced and can cater for everyone. No matter what your budget, you will find something to suit at Distinctive” The fantastic range of flooring covers all price points and Distinctive stocks well-known brands such as Brintons, Ulster, Axminster and Kingsmead at a fair price. A large selection of high-quality and value-for money hardwood flooring, laminate and vinyl also lines the showroom walls, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you are unable to visit the showroom – take advantage of Distinctive’s free ‘shop at home’ service. Andy will come to your home armed with a huge variety of samples so you can match them to your décor. There’s no safer way to ensure you find the perfect choice of floor covering and, with his expert advice readily available in the comfort of your own home, you’ll be sure to make the right decision. 8

community In July The Yorkshire Sculpture Park won the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014. The prize was presented at the National Gallery by Oscar-winning film and theatre director, Sam Mendes. The judges were incredibly impressed by YSP, and found it to be truly outstanding, with a bold artistic vision, consistently delivered at the highest level. “A perfect fusion of art and landscape, Yorkshire Sculpture Park has gone from modest beginnings to one of the finest outdoor museums one might ever imagine” said Stephen Deuchar, Chair of the Judges. And well deserved, this wonderful place has been a presence just off the M1 at West Bretton for 30 years, maybe more and has become the sort of place where the car park is packed! Who would think it? A Sculpture Park! And stuffed as the car park maybe, the park is so huge that it absorbs all the visitors and spreads them out throughout the grounds, the galleries, the shops and cafes. The main exhibition this summer is truly astonishing. I had not heard of Ursula Von Rydingsvard. She is a New York artist. Almost all her work is made in Cedar, and some of it is huge, all of it is visually strong work, some pieces evocative of landscape and rocky shoreline. I was truly astonished by the galleries and highly recommend this show. If you have time, energy and flat shoes make the short walk to the chapel and find the 6m high cast iron tree by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Free entry, but you pay for car parking www.ysp.co.uk English Heritage Brodsworth Hall held a host of events over the summer. Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 11am to 5pm a cast of actors will bring the household of 1918 to life and tell the stories of who returned from war and of those who sadly did not, and at Bolsover Castle every Saturday and Sunday until 28 September 11am, 1pm and 3pm 17th century Cavalier Horsemanship – members free, non-members £2 to normal ticket price www.englishheritage.org.uk/events 10

Claire Curneen is an artist whose work is always worth a look. She works in ceramic and her figures are not easily crafted, they hold the marks of her struggle to realise them and this in turn conveys a disquiet. I really hope this exhibition contains her St Sebastian figures which are stunning. What is Pilates? Many people have heard of the term Pilates as a form of exercise but are really unsure what it is all about, so here’s the low down. Pilates is a unique method of exercise designed to improve strength and flexibility, using a mind body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture.
One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.
Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain
The movements are flowing and controlled with emphasis on training core stability and balancing muscle systems, using mind and body control; these are brought together to achieve these aims through the following 8 sound principles: - concentration, centering, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control and flowing movement. Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficially for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions, mental health conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy. The medical world is now realising the benefits of the Pilates method for the prevention and rehabilitation of back injuries. In order to prevent a recurrence of back pain, it is essential to retrain the deep abdominal and spinal muscles. Whilst Pilates is very effective for most people, it is important that you have an individual assessment prior to starting a class to ensure that you learn the underlying principles fundamental to achieving success from Pilates and so that the classes can incorporate your individual needs.

FINDING 2 MATTERSEY LADS My friends and I are taking time out to find and visit every Serviceman whose name appears on the Retford War Memorial. As an extra I am finding all the Mattersey Lads as well. We started in March this year and hope to finish our adventure on November 11th at 11am Armistice Day at the Menin Gate in Ypres.
Cpl Edgar Glasby Pte Walter Ford Walter Ford
This is only 8 months of my life but these boys gave everything and never came home. I find it a great honour to be able to do this. I visited my own relative in 2004 and as I sat next to his grave I suddenly realised that I was the 1st person from my family to have been here. I felt sure that it was exactly the same for many of the other War dead and probably many of them had never been visited ever. Towards the end of June my group of friends and I travelled down to the Boulogne Coast where all the Base Hospitals were situated during the 1st World War. These were the last hospitals in France before being sent home to England (Blighty). This venture was driving out as far as Rouen then Le Treport followed by Abbeville, La Targette Paris Plage, Etaples Boulgne and finally to Koksjde in Belgium. Our 1st Mattersey Lad was at Etaples Military Cemetery with 10,816 graves. He is Cpl Edgar Glasby (Jnr) he was 20yrs of age when he died on 2/5/1918 and was then son of John and Annie Glasby of Mattersey. He served in the 7th Leicestershire Regiment and his service number was 41895. The 2nd Lad was in Coxyde (Koksjde) Military Cemetery with 1,631 graves. Pte Walter Ford, 60762, 28yrs of age at his death on 14/8/1917. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ford from Mattersey Hill and was serving with 14 Machine Gun Corps. His section had been taken out of the line for a rest 6 miles behind the front and because his gun had been in a bad position having had a lot of attention from the Germans when the section returned to the front his gun team were left for a couple of extra days. A shell hit the billet they were staying in and he was wounded in the head and died very shortly afterwards. His family found out first in a letter from one of Walters comrades then from the Chaplain 24

Joining together as five parishes
services effective from 14th September as follows (except for special and seasonal services). Our first Sunday together on 7th September is going to be different and special, to mark our new beginning. We are planning to walk from Misson to Mattersey, praying as we go and visiting each church for prayer and worship.
The Anglican parishes of Bawtry, Austerfield and Misson are to be joined by the parishes of Everton and Mattersey forming one new benefice from 1st September. All 5 churches will be led by myself Rev’d Jonathan Strickland assisted by two retired priests, two Lay Readers and a Curate, for the next year. One of the consequences of this larger group is the need to change the Sunday Service pattern,. Blooms from Bulbs It may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems. • When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules: • Wear gloves when handling, 30
BAWTRY TODAY
as some are toxic and can cause skin irritations • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them. Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any sign of mould (normally grey/blue in colour). • Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is ok • Damaged or split bulbs should not be selected • Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about 3 times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different. • Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development Bulbs can also be grown from seed. They take a good few years to flower, around five in my experience, but it’s very satisfying when they finally do and you can even have a go at cross pollinating to make your own varieties. Other favourites of mine are: Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’, an exquisite orange and purple flower Narcissus ‘Thalia’, a white and scented daffodil Galtonia, an imposing 60cm
tall with grass like foliage and a 90cm high flower spike in white Chionodoxa, with around 10 blue blooms per stalk, this is a small but cheery bulb Happy gardening!
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Mattersey Primary Leavers At the end of the summer term we said a fond farewell to our Year 6 pupils, many of whom had been with us for their whole Primary phase of education. The children completed their time at Mattersey with a residential visit to Kingswood Peak Venture, which they thoroughly enjoyed. This visit gave many of the children a chance to experience their first trip away from family and to challenge their own physical abilities. A trip to Southwell Minster was also undertaken where the children were able to reflect on their time at primary school and to think about moving onto secondary education. We wish all of our Year 6 pupils the very best as they continue their education. September 2014 We are pleased to be able to offer nursery provision from September 2014. Sessions are currently available for mornings and can be accessed by contacting the school office on 01777 817265 or alternatively by emailing office28@mattersey.notts.sch.uk Why not use some of your 15hrs funded education at our setting? We can also offer breakfast club from 8:00am and after-school club from 3:15-6:00pm. Holiday Club is available during the summer break from 8:00am-6:00pm – full and half day sessions can be booked by using the contact number above. We welcome visits to school by appointment, so why not come and see what we have to offer? Or visit our website www.mattersey.notts.sch.uk T

Introducing Central Doncaster’s new Poppy People
Mark and Debbie Gore from Tickhill in Doncaster have recently been appointed by The Royal British Legion as the new Poppy Appeal Organiser’s for the Doncaster Area. In previous years the Poppy Appeal in Doncaster has raised in excess of a staggering £25,000 each year for The Royal British Legion so we are delighted that Mark and Debbie have offered to take over the organising of the appeal in area. When asked about why they wanted to get involved, Mark & Debbie said “we want to get involved in the local community and also give something back to those who have served our Country. Supporting The Royal British Legion is a perfect way to achieve both.” Mia Senior, Community Fundraiser for The Royal British Legion said “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Legion – without them we wouldn’t be able to support so many serving personnel, veterans and their families with practical help and advice.” Mark and Debbie can’t do it all alone and are looking for any extra help. Even if you could just offer a couple of hours during the 2 week Poppy Appeal, or help deliver some collection tins, they would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact them on RBLpoppyGore@ hotmail.com or call Mia on 07769 877 443. T

How Far is Bawtry From Austerfield? At the moment, the answer is five miles, as opposed to the one mile it normally is. The authorities finally decided to bite the bullet and invest 6 weeks in digging up the road under the railway bridge on Thorn Road and installing what will hopefully prove to be an adequate drainage system. Given the size of the drainage pipes going in under the road, they aren’t taking any chances. From the roundabout at Bawtry Golf Club to Narrow Lane there are no less than 8 signs warning drivers of the fact that access to Bawtry is impossible from Thorn Road, together with staggered barriers at Toll Bar Corner. Yet, every day as I’ve cycled to my office (the pavement is still passable) I have seen cars go past all the signs and barriers only to turn round at Narrow Lane and then take the diversion, as advised 2 miles earlier. It’s not only drivers who ignore warnings in life, but also those who smoke, sun-bathe, are sexually promiscuous, over-drink or eat too much junk food (in all probably the vast majority of us); so why are we so foolish? Why
do we risk inconvenience, fines, sickness, legal action or even death by doing something we have been well warned not to? I’m sure a psychologist would have one answer, a sociologist a different one, an anthropologist yet another; but I have learnt to look to the Bible, and find that it warns us against inappropriate relationships, of not learning from other people’s mistakes, of not listening to your parents; in fact there isn’t an area of life which isn’t covered in the Bible and of which the dangers are not pointed out to us. We are also told that neither maturity in years, nor wealth nor influence make us more likely to listen to warnings: “Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning.” So, if you drive past me on Thorn Road only to come back the other way 3 minutes later, please forgive me if I appear to be smirking; it’s just that I am re-phrasing that Bible verse in my head, to; “Better a poor but wise cyclist than a foolish car-driver who no longer knows how to heed a diversion.”

Newsletter Bawtry Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2014
Bawtry Town Council is often requested to intervene in issues where it has no power to do so but can, in some cases, make representation to other authorities. In many cases such representation should be made directly to DMBC as the principal Authority. This for instance would be on highway matters and on street parking. Bawtry has a Town Council with the same powers and duties as a parish council or community
council. We thought that it would be useful if we published, in small parts, the Powers of Town/ Parish councils. This we intend to do over the next two or three months. Please be aware that some of these powers are historic, such as the need for Bath houses (unless we had a swimming pool), and to implement some of the powers would need more funding than our Budget allows at present.

The BIG Sleepout The BIG Sleepout - SAFE@LAST's signature event - returns to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire this Autumn. It's an event where people sleep rough for one night to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable young runaways. The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. SAFE@LAST is a registered charity working with vulnerable children and young people who have run away from, or have been thrown out of the place where they usually live – or are at risk of doing so. The charity 44
BAWTRY TODAY
provides a 24 hour helpline, web chat and text service, support for the young people and their families, an extensive prevention education programme, a team of street workers and, most remarkably of all the only refuge in the UK for children and young people who are under the age of 16. The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for SAFE@LAST to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at The BIG Sleepout's will help the charity to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice. Come and join us at Lakeside Village, Doncaster on Friday 26th September, Crystal Peaks, Sheffield on Friday 3rd October, Barnsley (Venue TBC) on Friday 10th October or Parkgate Shopping Centre, Rotherham, on Friday 17th October. Get your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you, grab your sleeping bag and cardboard, and help raise funds and awareness for young runaways in South Yorkshire. T

ACTING TOGETHER A brand new initiative to support local amateur drama societies in villages in Bassetlaw was unleashed last Saturday at Everton Village Hall. It is called Acting Together and is an informal network that brings these already vibrant societies together with the aim of sharing resources and skills. The idea originated at Everton who tempted other groups along to the meeting with a sumptuous cream tea. After a group brainstorm to identify the challenges facing village drama, the official representatives of six local societies have agreed to form a mutually supportive affiliation. It brings together hundreds of local drama enthusiasts. It will enable all of the societies to widen the scope of their productions, offering an even great range of entertainment than they already do to theatre goers across North Nottinghamshire. The Drama Societies involved are Bawtry Players, Blyth Players, Haxey Players, The Youth Theatre Worksop, Gainsborough Players and Everton Village Players. Acting Together was the brainchild of three members of Everton: Linda Larder, Margaret Hamilton and Jan Bailey. Linda, who facilitated the meeting on Saturday said “We are all very excited that we can now offer even more benefits to our members as well as our audiences who will be encouraged to support each others productions”.
World’s Biggest Coffee Morning... ...in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support Friday 26th September at Bawtry Phoenix Theatre 10am – 12.30pm. Please join us for tea, coffee, cakes, raffle, tombola and other stalls.
She said that Amateur drama groups are very important to their villages, because they are part of the glue that holds village communities together. She continued “Acting Together will ensure the societies are sustained long into the future. We are also looking forward to the possibility of joint productions and tours”
Other local amateur drama groups who may be interested in sharing skills, actors, marketing and resources should go to www.evertonvillageplayers.co.uk for more information. T BAWTRY TODAY DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3200 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk 47
