elcome to the April edition of W BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY Isn’t it lovely to see the splashes of

colour created by Spring flowers and to once again feel the warmth of the sun from time to time. I had solar panels fitted during the winter months and have my fingers crossed that as the days get longer and brighter they will start to earn their keep! March has been a busy but very enjoyable month for me. I have worked some long hours but made up for it by enjoying time with my family and friends. At the time of writing I have managed 3 Sundays in a row where I haven’t worked at all—something of a record for me! The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th April. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 13th April.

Best Wishes, Paula

Special Award

The Rotary Club of Doncaster recognised the magnificent fundraising efforts of Honorary Member Mike Cowan at their 90th birthday celebration at the Mount Pleasantthhotel on Saturday 25 February 2012 when Mike already Paul Harris Award recipient was awarded a very rare Paul Harris Award , a three sapphire pin to add to his existing award. Mike for many years known locally as a raconteur and former Yorkshire fast bowler, MCC cap and renowned After Dinner speaker as well as a prolific cruise ship guest speaker was absolutely, well almost, speechless as President Ruth Gardener presented Mike with his sapphire award This award is extremely rare and few exist in the UK. It recognises Mike’s seemingly tireless thirst for arranging and holding fundraising events that help local charities and individuals both within Rotary and in the community. He is not only big by stature but huge in his enthusiasm for helping those in need whilst having fun and commitment to raising thousands of pounds that the Club generously donate to groups and individuals Well done Mike

It has been a real encouragement to see how the community of Bawtry has risen to the challenge of running the town library. With over 60 volunteers, Bawtry is one of the most supported libraries in the country. Over 65 people popped in at the coffee morning in March; the library users have expressed appreciation at the volunteers’ willingness to give up their time; the management (all volunteers) have done tremendous work in not only organising the teams but also in negotiating costs, etc. with the council, exploiting the goodwill of the business community, seeking funding from all manner of sources and in dealing with the bureaucracy and red tape that is the blessing of modern life. At least 10 of us volunteers are committed Christians, active in one or other of the churches in Bawtry. An obvious question is; why? What has reading a book for free got to do with what Jesus called “the Kingdom of God”? Is anyone going to find faith through the library? Will the library actively encourage people to acknowledge their need of forgiveness of their sins? The answer to these questions is probably negative. But people can find comfort if disturbed, challenge and mental stretching, information on any manner of subject and they can marvel at God-given imagination and creativity; not only through books, but also DVD’s, Cd’s and an ever-changing display of local art. In the Bible God shows Himself to be passionately concerned about community – look again at the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20); the first three deal with how we should relate to God and the following seven how we should relate to other people. Repeatedly, it tells us to care for those who have no protector or provider (e.g. Deuteronomy 27); the people of God were instructed as to how to set up all aspects of a community – including extravagant parties and relaxing, and every Biblical town had a focal point, a meeting place. Christians are heavily involved in Bawtry Community Library because we believe in community. The library is the only building in Bawtry anyone is free to visit, for as long as they wish, and they are more than welcome to soak up the warmth, read the day’s newspapers, spend an hour on the internet, browse the local information or use the toilet – and there is absolutely no expectation of money changing hands – in fact, help borrowers to avoid having to pay a late-return fine. Please make the most of this wonderful resource we have, come along and support those who believe passionately in its value and perhaps even think of joining the volunteers – you will surprised at how much fun it is. Every blessing, Simon

OUNCE PR BLOWS OUT THE CANDLES AND CELEBRATES FIFTH BIRTHDAY WITH BRAND NEW WEBSITE Bawtry based media business bounds into leap year A local company, keen to dispel the myth that promoting your business has to be an expensive exercise, seems to be winning the fight as they celebrate their fifth year of trading this month, with the launch of their new website. Bounce PR, based in Bawtry, started out in 2007 when journalist, Tori Oldridge, decided she wanted to help local businesses explore just how much Public Relations could help boost their sales, but in a cost effective way. “Outside of cities, unfortunately a lot of people still aren’t aware of precisely what Public Relations is, let alone how much it can help increase sales and turnover,” explains Tori, head of Bounce. “They assume that to promote themselves, they need to pay for expensive adverts, and my goal with Bounce was always to show that this just isn’t the case,” she continues. “Through PR and the right, creative help, magazines and newspapers will actually want to write about your business meaning you can reach out to exactly the people you want, and in a way that won’t break the bank.” With close links to Sheffield, Nottingham and Doncaster, it seems that Bounce is achieving what it set out to do, having to date, executed several successful media campaigns for local start-up businesses and established regional companies looking to raise their profile in the area and increase turnover. With national campaigns also now under their belt, such as 2011’s one for the largest retailer of Christmas decorations in the UK, which secured £0.5m of media coverage, it looks like they’re onto a winning formula with new offices and a website with the wow factor to match. “Everyone who works at Bounce has a background in journalism, so we know exactly what the media is looking for and how to secure column inches for businesses,” Tori goes on. “Thanks to our website company Sumobaby, we’ve now also got a new website that we hope will help continue to spread the message to more businesses in the region – PR doesn’t have to be just for London and city based companies! It can work for any type of business, however big or small, wherever they’re based, but more importantly, it can really increase sales without costing the earth.” For more information on how Bounce can help your business by securing regular media coverage, please visit www.bouncepr.co.uk, email tori@bouncepr.co.uk or telephone 01302 719030 Inner Wheel Club of Doncaster St Leger

ickhill & District Lions

Tickhill & District Lions are very pleased to be working alongside other local groups to help Tickhill Town Council organise events to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee. Over the coming weeks and months you’re sure to see more information about the different events that local groups are planning, however many are also involved with what we hope will be a fitting grand finale to make it a weekend to remember. On Monday of the 4th of June (bank holiday Monday) we’re planning a Jubilee Tea Party to take place on the recreation ground in Tickhill. Starting at midday and running until late afternoon this large free event will provide entertainment for all the family. We’ll be announcing the full running order in the coming weeks, but it will include a teddy bears tea party for the children with Punch & Judy shows throughout the afternoon, sports and games with prizes for those taking part, and a stage with bands and entertainment throughout the afternoon. We’ll be encouraging you all to bring a picnic and make a day of it and there will be spaces available if you wish to bring a gazebo or chairs and tables to create your own little space from which to watch the festivities. Drinks and refreshments will be available and every effort is being made to ensure that as far as possible this is a free event for all. The groups involved are meeting regularly with Tickhill Town Council to ensure this will be an event to remember, and if you’d like to help please get in touch – the more the merrier. Simply send an email to contact@tickhilllions.com or phone us on 07752 688 340 and we’ll let you know details of the next meeting.

ickhill and Bawtry Probus Club.

Publicity works – we’ve reached 80! Not in years, in membership. Since we started putting quarterly reports in Bawtry Today our membership has increased from 56 to 80 – a rise of 42%. No wonder so many businesses advertise in this magazine! A new innovation has been our “Emergency Programme” for use on the rare occasions that our speaker does not turn up. Members have been asked to select three pieces of music which have some special significance for them and which they would be prepared to explain when the pieces are played to the meeting. We have recently used this Emergency Programme for the first time and found that the musical tastes of our members range from Opera to Heavy Metal! Perhaps this shows there is something for everybody in Probus. If you think you would like to join come as a visitor to any of our meetings which are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10.00 AM at the Millstone, Tickhill. Our programme for the next three months is: 12th April. “RAF Nuclear Testing” by Frank Morley. 26th April. “North Country Humour” by Derek Harker. 10th May. “My Careeer” by Bill Elliott 24th May. “My History” by Sylvia Atkinson. 14th June. “Bee Keeping” by David Allen. 28th June. “Famous Last Words” by M. Kitchen Devil Tops Poll as Domestic God!

Cleanliness should be next to godliness, but it’s kitchen devil, Gordon Ramsay’s no nonsense ‘clean as you go’ approach that’s scored top marks in Doncaster this Spring. In a recent poll of 1,000 people for professional domestic cleaning firm, MOLLY MAID, more than one in three men in Doncaster likened their home cleaning style to the kitchen supremo with an astonishing 32 per cent admitting to including cleaning in their daily routine and 58 per cent ranking the kitchen and bathroom as the most important rooms to keep clean. Almost a quarter likened their cleaning to the military precision of Boris Johnson’s electoral canvassing campaigns in London while one in five domestic gods put their polishing prowess on a par with all-round helpful husband and daytime TV presenter, Philip Schofield. But it seems that male chauvinism might not be dead and buried just yet, with 11 per cent of men preferring the Alan Sugar approach to home cleaning! In stark contrast to the dust busting males, only 18 per cent of women felt that they had graduated from the same school of obsessive cleanliness as Monica from Friends. One in three women in Doncaster are more likely to put friends and family first and one in two far too busy with the kids to worry about cleaning – just like Desperate Housewife’s Lynette. One in ten confessed to regularly pulling a ‘Hyacinth Bucket’ style cleaning manoeuvre in order to keep up appearances while clean freaks, Aggi McKenzie and Mary Poppins failed to register with more than 12 per cent of women. Lynne Crewe, MOLLY MAID Franchise Owner in Doncaster said; “Life is so fast paced these days that cleaning is often bottom of our list of priorities but it doesn’t stop us being any less house-proud than we were in the past.” “The fact that men in Doncaster like a clean home and more often than not take on half of the housework is not surprising as more and more households are owned by couples who both work full time. Sometimes it’s good to get a helping hand from professional cleaners to make life that bit easier and less stressful to make your home spotless.” MOLLY MAID has been providing bespoke professional domestic cleaning services to homes across the UK for over 25 years. Visit www.mollymaid.co.uk for more information or contact Andy & Lynne Crewe on 01427 875566 to discuss your specific cleaning requirements.

he Big Jubilee Lunch in Bawtry.

The Big Lunch has been happening around the country since 2009, but this year, the Queen has added her support by an inviting the nation to have lunch together on Sunday June 3rd as part of her 60th Jubilee celebrations. I (Jonathan Strickland, the vicar) am hoping that everyone in Bawtry will have the opportunity to join with friends and neighbours, and even if they are not particularly royalists, enjoy lunch and the afternoon together. Don’t worry, I have not gone crazy, I am not looking for somebody to cook Roast Beef for 4000! The idea of the Big Lunch is that groups of people organise themselves to have lunch together in streets, in gardens, on fields, in halls – anywhere that a group can get together. What do you eat? It’s up to you. Everyone could bring something to share, or someone might organise a barbecue and others bring bread and salads. Your Big Lunch could be a picnic or you could sit down round a table. First thing to do is talk to your neighbours, see who else is interested and find out who can help. There is a website with good ideas and advice, (www.thebiglunch.com) and when you know who is organising the Big Lunch in your part of Bawtry, they can send for the pack, which has posters and invitations in it. On that Sunday morning (June 3rd 10.30am), all the churches in Bawtry will be joining together for our annual “Celebrating Bawtry” service, when we will be giving thanks to God for all that is good about our town. We are supporting the Big Lunch because we hope that it will be a way of strengthening community, and helping us all to become even better neighbours than we are already.

Back by popular demand Daniel Smith Blues Band. Think Jools Holland – only better – only in your neighbourhood – and tickets only a fraction of the price…. You wont have a better boogie woogie evening anywhere……. Daniel Smith is described as the world's greatest Dutch-Indonesian -Anglo-Scottish blues and boogie woogie piano player - and it's probably true! He learnt boogie woogie from his Dutch-Indonesian uncle on regular visits to Holland, his mother's family having emigrated there post-War from Jakarta, Indonesia, where his maternal grandfather had been a jazz piano player as well as an official in the Dutch colonial civil service. Daniel Smith is one of the most exciting talents to emerge on the British blues scene in recent years. In 1994, he first shot to prominence with Sonny Black, gaining rave reviews from press, audiences and fellow musicians alike. 1999 saw him launch his own solo career and form The Daniel Smith Blues Band. He has a rare technical and musical ability to produce sustained and inspired keyboards work across the whole spectrum of the blues genre. Whether performing standards or his excellent original material, Daniel Smith is commonly recognised as an outstanding keyboards talent and a boogie woogie pianist without parallel. Add to this his dry, laid-back, on-stage humour and an absolute killer band - (featuring some of Britain's finest, most experienced musicians) - and you have a class act invoking a genuine sense of the old-time, good-time barrelhouse and speakeasy. He has recorded eight albums http://www.daniel.smith.hampshire.org.uk/

Ten local residents have called an election, which will obviously incur election costs to the parish and details of such will appear on the town noticeboards. It should be understood 38 | BAWTRY TODAY

that the election is for one vacancy alone, and is not a full election for all town council seats. It is hoped that to reduce expense the election will coincide with the borough’s May elections. General Mr Michael Vallow a regular attendee (and has been for a very long time) at town council meetings as a member of the public, has recently returned home from hospital and we wish him all the very best for what we hope will be a speedy recovery. Youth Club DMBC staff are now running the youth club every fortnight on a Friday evening between 18.00 to 20.00 in the lower room at the Methodist church. Supporting the activity may ensure it continues.
