Welcome to

the JULY 2014 edition

“Teachers plant the seeds of knowledge that grow forever.”- Author Unknown Another school year is coming to end, exam periods are over (great relief in our household) and many children enter a period of end of term concerts, awards evenings, sports days and other end of year activities. For our family, it brings the end of Primary School as my youngest moves on to join her brother and sister at Secondary School in September. I am sure that if previous years are anything to go by there will be tears shed in church on the last day of term by pupils and parents alike! What will I do in September, when after 12 years I have no more morning and afternoon school runs to do? No more Primary PTA and the end of my term as a Parent Governor will also have been reached. I am very sure I will still find my time filled – (before any of you rush forward with other suggestions!) The August issues will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th July. The busiest week of my month dealing with all the community content and advertising that pours in around this deadline coincides with the last week of term, together with many of the activities already described – please help me to ensure that I don’t miss out on these activities, and get your contributions in on time (early would be fantastic!) – thank you. Please be aware that the following month the closing date falls very early in August, so that I can take a period off work to spend time with my family during the holiday period.

Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Embracing The Future - Recognising The Past Many years ago Bawtry was famous for its Sunday market which was held on land where the stylish Courtyard now stands. So it was with great delight that, on Saturday 7th June, the first market in decades took place amidst thunder, lightning and rain oh and healthy dose of 'can do' spirit too! We're pleased to say that it was a great success with some fantastic stalls, lots of visitors, music and entertainment making it a very special occasion. It was great to see an old Bawtry tradition resurrected with a 21st century twist. If you missed that one then there is no need to worry! Bawtry Courtyard Farmers Market will take place each 1st and 3rd Saturday between now and October between 9am and 3pm. Do call down and see us or visit its Facebook page - BawtryCourtyardFarmersMarket for details of stall holders or how you can get involved. It's just a matter of weeks now until our annual Visit Bawtry Polo Cup which takes place on Sunday 17th August at Vale of York Polo Club, Misson. Teams will be competing for the coveted cup with many seeking to knock last year's winners the Crown Hotel, Bawtry from their winner's podium! It's always a great day with visitors encouraged to picnic, buy a glass of fizz or two and make a donation to the charity that it's all in aid of, Aurora. Let's hope the sun shines! And don't forget our new website www.visitbawtry.com which has lots of useful information about Bawtry Retail Association, shops and businesses and our events. T 8

At our May meeting we were intrigued by Leader Bothers and their Mystery Box. They had a box of Antique Gadgets which were described and passed around for the members to guess “what is it?” 10 items were “identified” or not?. Our members brought along family items to be judged by the brothers who selected 3 of interest, gaining our members valuable points for our monthly competitions. In June we are learning the basics of Tai Chi and in July we are being educated by a nutritionist. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the Bawtry New Hall at 7.15pm for 7.30pm. Everyone welcome. T

Tenancy £££ Deposits

- don’t get caught out!

In the recent case of Superstrike -v-Rodrigues the court of Appeal gave a decision that could have wide reaching consequences for Landlords and Tenants.

Tenancy Deposits - don’t get caught out!

The case concerned a tenant’s deposit taken before the Tenancy Deposit Regulations came into force in April 2007 but where the fixed term ended after that date and the tenant remained. The court held that the periodic tenancy arising in these circumstances was a new tenancy so the Landlord should have protected the deposit and served the prescribed information. As a result the Landlord’s claim for possession failed.

We hope that the decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court to clear up the uncertainty about whether the case also affects deposits taken after April 2007. We can review your tenancy agreements and deposit arrangements to advise you on your options to make sure you are protected. For more information or to arrange an appointment.

community How fast is this year going? It seems to be flying by.

Finding a forever home

We all hope the flash floods will go for good as it creates havoc for everyone at the Sanctuary. The poor dogs don’t know where they are one minute they are happily playing or chilling in their kennels the next the heavens open and they are back inside to keep dry! Then again we are never satisfied.

We recently held our sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest. It was a beautiful sunny morning lots of people turned out to walk with their dogs. After the walk everyone enjoyed a lovely cuppa and cake. We don’t have a total for the event as yet but would like to thank everyone for their support and making our walk a huge success.

Here are a couple of dates for your diary:

along well but the heavy rain doesn’t make it easy to stick to time scales! We have just collected 6 young puppies that are beautiful but not quite ready for re homing yet. But if you are looking for a puppy, or an older dog, kitten or cat please come and see us we will be happy to have a chat and point you in the right direction. We are at Narrow Lane, Bawtry and telephone number 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 We look forward to speaking to you.

The 6th of July will be our Scrufts Dog Show at The Recreation field, Tithes Lane in Tickhill. This is an annual event that we all love as we can once again say hello to lots of dogs that we have rehomed who come along to join in the festivities - with their owners of course! It’s a wonderful day out with lots going on so please come and join us. On the 20th July we will be holding a Tom bola at Doncaster Town Fields at their annual Gala. Getting back to what’s happening at The Sanctuary. We are still knee deep in building work but we hope it isn’t too disruptive. It’s coming

Stevie was rehomed with her brother, Frank, as a kitten and has spent a very happy 4 months with her new family. Unfortunately their landlord has changed his policy with regard to pets and has refused to allow animals in his properties. Therefore they have had to return to Mayflower. Stevie is very close to her brother so a home together is essential. She is extremely affectionate and loves nothing better than to cuddle up on your knee. Have you room in your hearts and home for this adorable pair?

Hello I’m Bodie, I came to Mayflower from the local dog pound. When I first arrived at Mayflower the bones in my front legs were not growing properly and were bowed outwards....hence the name Bodie! They have now corrected themselves through good nutrition and gentle exercise. I am a very playful, loving, giddy Young lad that needs all the usual puppy training, for example toilet training, socialising and basic commands. I need a home that has plenty of time to spend with me as I’m always on the go and I love to play, with the right loving home I will grow into a beautiful young dog. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers.

‘X’ MARKS THE SPOT. . . OR DOES IT? Patients often arrive at their Physiotherapy assessment with some idea of what is wrong… ”I’ve got Achilles tendonitis/runner’s knee/tennis elbow…” Not unreasonably, this conclusion is based on the fact that it is their Achilles tendon/ knee/elbow that hurts. However, for many patients, the pain they are experiencing in one part of their body is actually caused by a problem elsewhere. This is referred pain. Left arm or jaw symptoms felt during a heart attack is a familiar example of referred pain. Although the exact mechanism explaining this sort of pain remains unclear, pain scientists believe it is linked to the way we are ‘wired up’. For instance, the nerves from your Achilles tendon share the same route to your brain as the nerves in your lower back, and your brain can’t always tell the difference between the two.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

If you have referred pain, the onset of pain may be hard to explain – there is no memorable injury or significant change to your training schedule or workload, the pain may be hard to find – moving and poking the painful area doesn’t quite illicit the symptoms as you would expect (though the area may still be tender to touch) and ‘treating’ the painful area (ice, massage, stretches) doesn’t work. As experts in movement and function, Physiotherapists assess the human body as a whole (we could be thought of as human engineers) enabling us to find and treat the primary source of the pain in order to maximise pain free movement and function elsewhere. You just might be surprised at what we end up treating! Caroline Hennigan BSc (Hons) MCSP, HPC Chartered Physiotherapist Bizard Physiotherapy 16

Following the mysterious disappearance of one of our chickens, a series of events has been triggered which really demonstrates the benefits of living/working within a small community. Having read our last article, detailing the loss of chicken Tikka, we were contacted by a local lady (Mrs Lea) who had recently re-homed an abandoned battery hen. Mrs Lea invited us to come and meet the hen ‘Sally’ and offered her to us as a replacement for Tikka. Sally joined us just before the Easter holidays and has settled in with the others really well. She is learning how to be ‘free range’!

Under unseasonably cold and rainy skies, we met on Wednesday 28th May for our Annual Meeting. We were pleased to welcome Dorothy Meekin and Catherine Rushby from the South Yorkshire Federation who conducted the nomination procedure for our next year’s president. Joanna Phillips accepted her nomination and we are very pleased that she will be continuing to lead our branch in the coming year. Her enthusiasm and commitment to the WI movement make us all feel very welcome and her positive leadership is greatly appreciated by us all. The business side of the meeting allowed us a brief resume of last year’s events, even as we are already thinking about next year’s programme, and we were updated on our financial position by our hardworking and discreet treasurer, Gill.

More recently, we were contacted by another member of the local community who believed that she had found Tikka. Tikka it would seem has been on a bit of an adventure and has made her way to the far end of Mattersey Thorpe. It was only through reading the local magazine ‘Idle Talk’ that the lady who had found her realised she could be our lost hen. The children are ecstatic that she has been found as we believed that in one way or another she had gone to the great chicken coop in the sky. They eagerly await her return and are keen to share some of their ideas about her ‘adventures!’ This incident goes to show how useful local magazines can be and what a valuable resource they are. Many thanks to Steve at Idle Talk and to everyone who has helped us with the chicken situation, our faith in human kindness has been restored! We concluded the evening with refreshments, a quiz and a hard fought game of Beetle. On Wednesday 25th June, we are anticipating a very interesting evening with Barbara Meyer talking about wildlife conservation, especially of the Amur leopard and Siberian tiger. Those of us who visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park regularly are particularly looking forward to this meeting. Because so many of us will be away, we have decided not to meet in July, but we’ll be back in full swing on Wednesday 27th August, when Jackie Housley will demonstrate the art of decorating cupcakes, providing the cakes and all necessary ingredients for us to try our own hand at a new skill. We look forward to your joining us, either as a member for the whole year or as a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T

Arts Review

& what’s going on - JULY 2014 HILARY

Rotherham’s roadside planting is in full bloom, and looks absolutely stunning. As you drive round the borough there is a mass of colour along the verges and on the roundabouts, red and orange poppies, bright blue cornflowers, plantain and my favourite weed – Dyers Weld. This scheme is in its second year, and will change and develop over the summer. It is a living art-work and statement of civic pride, and I would love to see this style of planting throughout South Yorkshire. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Exhibition: 28 June - 7th September Common Ground: An Amusement of Recycled Art Donna Bramall and Jungle use recycled objects to create art which reflects on how the past has shaped their adult lives. CountrybyMarket Hilary Cartmel This article continues my occasional page on shopping and local sustainability. Many of you have already discovered and shop at the Country Market which takes place in Tickhill every Friday morning at 10 am sharp at the Methodist Church School Room, to the rear of the Methodist Church, and on a fine day out on the front car-park. This Market sells Jam, preserves, honey, cakes, bread, pies and baking of all kinds, eggs, craftwork, plants and cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and a very popular café. I have over the years bought delicious cakes from the market and from Taylors who stock their baking in the store. I still have Ruth Taylor’s plants flourishing in my garden from the time when I first moved to the area and the Market was held in the Parish rooms opposite Spar. What I didn’t know was how old this organisation is and what it means. I had assumed it was organised by The Women’s Institute, and I know I’m not the only one, and this is because it used to be. Now it is a separate Co Operative Social Enterprise. The idea for the Women’s Institute came to the UK from Canada in 1913 and organised local production and distribution of food in Country areas enabling WI members, pensioners and unemployed or disabled ex-servicemen to sell their produce. This began in Anglesey in 1916 during the food shortages of WW1 . The Market in Lewes has run continually for almost a century, it was set up in 1919. In 1932 the Ministry of Agriculture asked the WI to assist in feeding the nation and to help the unemployed during the depression. Having functioned for about 80 years as a part of the Women’s Institute , The Country Markets became a separate limited company in 1995. Over the years the number and spread of the markets grew Countrywide. Now there are 300 in England, Wales and the Channel Islands. In the South Yorkshire Area there are markets in Doncaster, Holmfirth, Penistone, Sheffield S10 and Tickhill. The producers certainly do not seem to be doing this work for a hearty living, but for the pleasure of making and getting some return. In 2005 the Markets across the UK had an annual turnover of £11 million. Presumably now it has increased considerably. Every producer becomes a shareholder by handing over ‘The King’s Shilling’. Today it is still a princely 5p to join, as it was in 1913. It may be a paltry sum now, but you 22

BAWTRY TODAY

could sell your life for the King’s Shilling at one time. And once you have joined you become a member of a Co Operative. Anyone over the age of 16 can join. All goods are sold together, accounted for, managed during the sale and a cheque issued at the end of the month for the sum of your goods less about 10% to cover costs of running the market (hall rent, insurance etc). All goods sold must be produced, made by or grown by the producer. No goods that are bought-in can be sold, the point of the Market is local sustainability which results in particularity to the area and fresh seasonal produce together with low or zero transport costs. The plants you buy you know will grow in this area because they were raised here, the cakes are delicious because they are fresh, the craftwork has been made by the person behind the counter. All goods are labelled with the producers name so any comments you want to make about the jam you bought last week, to discuss ingredients, your allergy control or to wheedle a recipe you can talk directly to the cook. All food handlers are required by law to undertake relevant food hygiene training. The customer can rely on the produce they buy being of the highest standard. The Markets consciously do not compete with local suppliers, but they aim to compliment what is on offer locally, perhaps by selling different varieties of produce and at a comparable price On a Friday morning green cloth-covered baskets filled with baking travel out to fulfil orders and tempt shoppers in the local schools and businesses around the town. Tickhill Country Market 10 to 11.45am every Friday at the Methodist Church School Room, behind the Methodist Church. Orders can be taken for all goods, for special craft commissions, tomato and other plants and for occasions like Christmas and Easter, weddings and birthdays which require special baking and cakes. www.sycountrymarkets.co.uk

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club. Long summer days and time to get done all those outdoor jobs you’ve been meaning to do all winter! Great for a week or two but very soon various muscles start to ache and you begin to wonder if this is really what retirement is about! Time for a little relaxation and what better way than by joining Probus, a local club for retired professional and businessmen – we interpret this definition fairly widely. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10.00 for 10.30am at the Millstone Hotel. At each meeting we have a speaker and after the meeting many of our members can be found in the bar or having lunch. Sounds attractive? Come along as a guest one Thursday and see for yourself.

Our programme for the next 3 months is set out below and we are sure you will agree there is something for everybody. 10th July. “Retirement – What Retirement?” by Maggie Popps.

In Probus we got to know the real Peter and he will be sorely missed by many. Our condolences go to his family at this time.

Garden View

Maximus flora phobia true or just a tall story? I’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think. Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house. 28

BAWTRY TODAY

There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil. If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of

mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow …. “Oh, only four-tfive feet darling’. She actually got away with that one … until the following summer that is anyway!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

ROSSINGTON MALE VOICE CHOIR...

Smalls for All - It all starts with pants!

are again appealing for new members to join.

Cherish Dress Agency in Bawtry will be collecting used, lightly worn bras and new pants for women and children during the month of July. We will be sending them to the Charity ‘Smalls for All’ who will take them out to various countries and contacts in Africa.

We meet each Wednesday in the Ragusa Drive Community Centre on Radburn Road, Rossington at 7.30.p.m.

An interest in singing and enjoyment of social appreciation is more important than actual singing talent.

Donating underwear may seem like a small contribution to make to countries with so many problems. But it makes a huge difference to the lives of some children and women. Apart from the obvious hygiene problems there is evidence that wearing underwear can actually help prevent the sexual assault of women and children. Yet for many, underwear is a luxury that they simply cannot afford. Girls who are lucky enough to have a place in school often miss 3 or 4 days a month due their lack of underwear. Smalls for All donates underwear in many ways - through links with established charities; through hospitals that treat women with conditions like fistula; through IDP camps and children's homes and orphanages.

Please come along and listen to our practice, then join in if you wish to. It could be the start of an interesting and stimulating hobby.

Smalls for you also aims to set up some grassroots projects with local ownership, focusing on initiatives that are sustainable and that put people in a better economic and social position.

Please contact Allan Robson on 01302 860623 for more details if necessary. T

To find out more look at www.smallsforall.org and bring down your unwanted bras and some new pants to Cherish in July. T

Men and boys from eight to eighty are very welcome and a warm and convivial reception is assured.

RNLI Benefits from teaching assistant going the extra mile. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) launched its H2Only campaign last month to help raise money for the brave volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards who save lives at sea. The RNLI challenged people to give up all drinks except for water for 2 weeks from Tuesday 27 May 2014. Fundraisers have had to master the art of self-control to give up the humble cup of tea, the refreshing can of pop or the well-earned glass of wine. Last week, the RNLI published research saying that 29% of Brits chose a cup of tea as their favourite drink, with 63% of us drinking 4 cups or more of tea or coffee day. However, one volunteer, Ryan Hanson, 19 from Mattersey Thorpe near Doncaster, wanted to push himself further to raise money for the RNLI. Ryan is doubling the challenge length and will be taking on the H2Only challenge for a whole month. ‘After seeing the H2Only challenge pop up on Facebook, I was reminded of a rescue I witnessed first-hand which has always stayed with me. In the summer of 2010 I was on the coast when a tourist got into trouble in the water prompting the brave volunteers from Whitby lifeboat station to swing into action,’ said Ryan. ‘If that crew and the hundreds like them across the UK and Ireland can drop everything to help others, then I thought pushing myself further and taking on the H2Only challenge for a month was worth it.’ Currently a trainee teaching assistant at Mattersey Primary School, Ryan is aiming to raise as much money as possible for the lifesaving charity. Ryan has enlisted support from pupils at the school to help him raise money. For example, Ryan is holding a Guess Teddies Name & Colouring Competition with prizes donated by the RNLI up for grabs. Ryan started at the school as a midday supervisor and a play worker for the afterschool and holiday club, before being offered an apprenticeship to become a teaching assistant. Since January this year to April, RNLI lifeboat crews in the North of England have launched 62 times and saved 4 lives. Newsletter Bawtry Town Council - JULY 2014

Firstly the council would like to thank George Spencer and Vivienne Wilcox for their period of office as Town Mayor and Deputy town Mayor respectively. They both have brought valuable knowledge and experience of local government and of Bawtry itself to our town council and are very much appreciated by the council. Both George and Vivienne are to remain as councillors but have stood down from office to encourage other councillors to take up the baton. My name is Sandy Young and the council have democratically elected me as Town Mayor of the council for this year along with John Walsh as Deputy Town Mayor. We will step into somewhat large shoes for these roles ,but will both give our best for the residents and businesses of Bawtry. The council has voted to keep the Precept at £26000 as it has been for the past 11 years but even if we wished to increase it we could only increase by 2% in accordance with central government legislation. By comparison the receipts from the pay and display parking on market hill were £72,645 for last year and is the major income for the council to use for the good of Bawtry. 38

Gainsborough Road toilets have been vandalised and defaced again. They have been cleaned up but the council is keeping a watching brief and will consider closing them if the damage is repeated. We are also keeping a watch on the progress of the 3D survey carried out by Tesla before any application is lodged for a licence for fracking. We are assured that fracking will not take place under Bawtry. We will organise a public meeting about this when we have gained more knowledge. The local sports day on Saturday 7th June, organised by BARS, was a success and well attended despite the poor weather in the morning. This was followed on Sunday 8th June by the Town Service organised by

Bawtry Churches together and again was well attended; the council was represented by Cllrs Young, Summers and Holland and also by our local MP Rt Hon Caroline Flint. The council give thanks to our three handymen who clear litter from the town and also attend to some of the grassed areas in the town. We have increased the numbers by 0.5 posts to widen their duties. In a cost cutting exercise DMBC is to cut the number of ward councillors from the current 63 down to 54. This is in conjunction with proposed changes to the ward boundaries which will probably mean that our ward will have two councillors rather than three at present.

TRACTORS TAKE TO THE ROADS FOR CHARITY Tractor enthusiasts, young and old, will drive out their prize vehicles, to help raise funds for a worthy cause. Sunday 6th July will see over one hundred tractors, both vintage and more modern, meet up at Hardwick Village in Clumber Park, for a lunch time break.

Tickhill & District Lions Tickhill & District Lions are proud to announce that three of our members (Steve Radford, Martin Harper and Graham Mickley) will be taking the rest of the year off beer to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. They’ve committed not to let a drop of alcohol (beer or otherwise) pass their lips until 2014 is out, which for those of you who know these three is a tall order! Lion-President Steve Radford said “Some people run a marathon but for various reasons, mostly laziness, we can’t do that. So this is our equivalent. It’s going to be tough; but that’s kind of the point, and once we have the first few sponsors signed up there’s no going back as it’s all for a good cause.” The three are keen to point out that they’re not planning to turn into social recluses and will be out and about supporting their local pubs as much as ever. So if you see them, or hear a shout of “mine’s a lime and soda”, please give them your support and consider popping a pound or two in their collecting tin. Alternatively you can donate via their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/yearoffbeer T 40

Tractors will set off from College Farm, Tuxford at 10am, stop in Clumber Park at 12.30pm, for approx one hour, returning to Tuxford for 4.30pm. 2014 is the tenth anniversary of the Road Run, in memory of Michael Ducksbury. His family hopes to raise a record amount this year. To date £55,000 has been donated to the Cancer Charity. “We raise money through sponsorship, donations and a raffle,” said a spokesperson for the Ducksbury family. “Michael was a true tractor enthusiast and Weston Park Hospital provided such good care when he was ill. We know many photographers look for something different in their hobby. This might just appeal to them. The tractor drivers always have a good day out!” T

community “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing” It was a real shame that the town’s special weekend at the start of June saw such wet weather, especially as it was the first day of the resurrected Bawtry market. While the stall holders were trying to keep their products dry in The Courtyard, it was decided that Bawtry Sports Day would go ahead down on the Memorial Sports Ground. It is true, everything did get wet, fewer people attended then would have done had the sun been shining and it caused more work for the organisers. However, many Bawtry residents did go along, determined to enjoy themselves and, being dressed appropriately, had a great afternoon enjoying the many activities available. Not only did the hot coffee and burgers sell well, so did ice-creams which says a lot about people’s determination to have a good time, whatever the weather. It all reminded me of a chapter in Thomas Hardy’s “The Mayor of Casterbridge”. That town also had festivities planned for a certain day, a day when the heavens opened. In the story, the mayor and his peers meet in one place and sit in a marquee scowling at the rain; at the same time the workers have a genuine party under a hotchpotch of tarpaulins, dancing and singing refusing to let the rain ruin their day. A pastor once said that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it; it is a given that it will rain at times when we don’t want it to but that doesn’t have to stop us enjoying what Jesus Christ called “life in abundance”. As the Bible says; “for I am convinced that nothing in the whole of creation can separate us from the love of God.” Not even rain. As we go through the ups and downs of our lives, let’s make sure we always dress appropriately; then we will learn that; "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain." Tickhill Male Voice Choir Songs for a Summer Evening The choir performed a concert at Wadworth Community Centre on Saturday 14th June to raise funds for the “Yorkshire Air Ambulance”. Proceeds will also be shared with Wadworth Community Centre and Tickhill Male Voice Choir. The atmosphere was friendly and everyone enjoyed the music, which was ideally suited for summer entertainment. A variety of traditional and modern songs were performed by the choir, ranging from sentimental to amusing. There were also solo performances from members of the choir by George Boothman, Mike Thorns with guitar, Martin Lord and Chris Buley with guitar. The Choir has a considerable repertoire with music being selected specially for each occasion. We are professionally supported by our Musical Director, Gywneth Platts and Accompanists, Janet Skinner and Geoffrey Cox. Allen Mason, gave another enigmatic performance as Compere, providing some rather interesting and amusing information about the songs. The Choir performs concerts in the surrounding area at a range of venues including churches and halls, for various groups, organisations and societies, to help with fund raising and charities. We also aim to provide entertainment and enjoyment, and refreshments, sometimes cheese and wine, are usually included. If you would like to book the choir for an event or special occasion, you can visit our web site. Just use “Google” and enter “Tickhill Male Voice Choir”. Our next performance is on Saturday, 19th July, at Cantley Methodist Church, 7.30pm. This will be a joint concert with the “Doncaster Ladies Choir” If you enjoy singing, try an informal visit to one of our rehearsal nights on Mondays at 7.30pm, where you can listen and chat to some of the members. These are held in the Methodist School Room at the rear of the church, near the centre of Tickhill. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags
