com JANUARY Welthe
2014 edition
And so we welcome another year… 2014. I do hope that all readers have had an enjoyable Christmas, and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As I write this, there are still 2 weeks before the big day but I know that this time will fly past and I am determined to make time to enjoy all the things that make this time of year special. For me many of the school related activities will be the last ones, as my youngest will join her brother and sister at secondary school next September, so no more Christmas Fairs, nativity plays and school Christingle services that are part and parcel of the run up to Christmas at primary school. Maybe after 11 years of manning a tombola at a PTA Christmas Fair, I will get a year off next year!

Doncaster Museum runs courses, and one I attend regularly is the monthly life drawing. For me, as practicing scales is for a musician. It hones ones craft, sharpens the observation and makes demands on ones drawing skills as no other situation can. The artist and the model are in a contract with each other until the end of the session, and it results in effort and concentration for the whole of that period of time that can be exhausting, but very rewarding. What one learns can be applied to every aspect of arts practice including abstract work, it’s about developing a personal visual language, composition and spacial awareness. So I really value the sessions because there is available good tuition which is a real rarity, and it is pitched to suit the complete beginner or the experienced artist. Each session is a challenge and as such becomes a reward. 2014 Sessions: 25 January, 22 February, 8 March and 12 April from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm £7.50 / £5 concession. 01302 734293, museum@doncaster.gov.uk
Whats on in January? From Phoenix Nights to Phoenix Theatre Local Slimming World Consultant Nicky Sorsby recently met up with Phoenix nights star Paddy McGuiness at a Slimming World awards ceremony.
Bawtry members for a few months due to the closure of Bawtry Hall but was hitting brick walls everywhere she turned. Nicky says “After meeting Paddy I had that light bulb moment; what about of the Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry?” “The Bawtry group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in Bawtry. Obesity is at record levels everywhere, lots of people are suffering a range of weight-related health problems
from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low selfworth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. So anything that helps people to lose weight by adopting healthy eating habits and becoming more active is making a difference – both to themselves and future generations of children too.” If you would like to achieve your weight loss dream and join a warm and friendly group where no foods are banned pop along to the Phoenix Theatre on Thursdays from the 2nd January from either 3.30pm or 5.30pm
In the picture from left to right is Laura Moore consultant in Worksop, Nicky Sorsby Consultant Bawtry & Retford, Paddy McGuiness, Dani Elliott Harworth Consultant & Caroline Douglas Carlton in Lindrick Consultant. T

A Postcard from the Swedish Mountains Lee Jackson Report from
Having developed a fondness for New England, in both the fall and the Snow, our visit to the Swedish mountains prompted an immediate question “why didn’t they consider calling New England New Sweden instead”!
There are of course very sound historical reasons that the six states across the Atlantic reference these shores not least due to the fact that the area was originally settled by the pilgrim fathers from South Yorkshire. But following our visit to Sweden it is clear that the architecture of the New England region resembles more closely that of the Scandinavian settlers and I was soon equally enthralled with the Swedish landscape. Faced with the need to satisfy a three year thirst for the Ski slopes I pondered the possibility of a four day break for my son and I, and settled on the top Swedish ski destination of Are, pronounced “aura”. With a short connection in Amsterdam our 6am flight from Manchester got us into Trondheim (Norway) shortly after midday. Though our primary purpose was to get as much time on the piste as possible the 2 hour journey across the E14, proved a delight rather than a delay. After a few miles of red barns dotted along the frozen riverside in Norway we headed up into the mountains, over the Swedish border, and amongst the vast frozen lakes, before descending into Are and the immediate promise of the pistes. We soon realised that our equipment hire would have been better arranged at one of the mountainside locations rather than the resort centre, still at least we got a quick glimpse of the village and after making our way quickly to 22 22

the Are Continental hotel, we grabbed some floodlit skiing and tobogganing in Are Bjornen, the family focused area. Though only a small number of blue level pistes are lit we were able get an easy entry back onto the slopes and ended the evening with dinner at the hotel overjoyed with our day and our snow filled Nordic surroundings. Our stay at the Are Continental was driven through the limited options in booking late within the school holiday, and trying to stick to our budget for the overall 4 day trip. A few online comments suggested that the hotel was very functional and a few kilometres beyond the centre of Are but as our trip was largely about hours on piste and we were minutes from the lifts at Bjornen it seemed to fit the bill. Though the comments are completely accurate, both in terms of hotel design and location, the public areas of the hotel were sufficiently cosy to provide a welcome refuge after a day on the slopes and I would have no hesitation in returning there all be it with the recommendation of a car in preference to the limited availability of the ski bus. The fashionable ski resort of Are sits by the lake of the same name and links the resorts of Are, Bjornen, Tegerfjall and Duved. On this visit our skiing was limited to Are and Bjornen which provided sufficient variety for an intermediate and a youngster just getting to grips with the blue slopes. Our days in Are were packed from start to finish on the slopes, interspersed with great Scandinavian food on the
mountain and cinnamon infused breaks for hot chocolate. Of particular note was the area of Ulladalen, a meeting point for alpine and cross country tracks and a frozen vista of Nordic beauty deserving of an extended stay in the Ulladalsstugen restaurant. In comparing the Swedish skiing experience to that of the Alps there is a unique and effortless cool to the Nordic option. The associated bling that comes from the fashionable requirements of the high profile alpine resorts sits very differently to the natural Swedish approach where a rucksack containing sausages for the piste-side barbecue is much more valued consideration. And though the panorama does not include the array of mountain spikes of Austria, France or Italy, the atmosphere on the slopes makes for a unique Nordic mood that is equally compelling. There is also much else to do in the Swedish mountains and the offpiste options in Are are much more than a simple side show. For starters the sport of cross country skiing is engrained in the Nordic way of life and is more popular than the downhill version. There is also the opportunity to travel across the vast lakes much faster by arranging a skidoo safari, and with ice fishing and husky sledding also on the agenda we really did need more time to get the best of Are and the surrounding region. 2014 - Will It Be A Good Year? There are some exciting events coming up in 2014 –the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Football World Cup in Brazil and the Tour De France in Sheffield. Away from sport, we are promised some exciting new gadgets from Apple, a new Spiderman film and the latest Jack Reacher book; all of which are eagerly awaited in my house. Then we have the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1 and the Scottish Referendum on independence. 2014 will undoubtedly bring times of personal joy; maybe a long anticipated dream holiday, an exciting job, getting married or a new baby. But we can also be sure that it will also have its lows; some people will lose a loved one, receive a frightening diagnosis, find themselves out of work or have struggles in their marriage. At the start of this New Year, we all look ahead with a mixture of anticipation and disquiet as we have absolutely no idea what will occur during the next 12 months. I have found that The Bible offers great comfort as I think about the future; words of Jesus like; “I will never leave you or abandon you” and Psalm 23; “Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me.” A modern hymn describes the closeness of God to those who trust in Him; “He walked where I walk, He stood where I stand, He felt what I feel, He understands.” So, at the start of 2014, I encourage you to embark on this journey with the only one who “knows the end from the beginning”, if you would like to find out what that means, then please come along to any of our events or services (see overleaf); I guarantee you will find a warm welcome and, I hope 2014 proves to be a good year. Misson & Springs WI Ramblers The 2014 calendar was launched to our members in October and we are eagerly anticipating another year of interesting speakers and activities.
On Wednesday 29th January, Sylvia Atkinson returns to finish the fascinating story of her family, and on 26th February, we eagerly await a demonstration of pasta making by Mamma Giusi’s from Retford. We enjoy our food and drink in Misson, and our meeting on Wednesday 27th November fulfilled both those criteria with an excellent talk by John Atherfold, whom many of you know from his shop in Bawtry. He introduced us to some outstanding wines with appropriate food to complement them, with background information and
anecdotes to put them into context. Fortunately, he still sells wine online and has an extensive and eclectic list. Continuing with the food and drink theme, our cake stall at the Misson Christmas Fair on 1st December sold out quickly and for our Christmas celebration on 18th December, we dispensed with traditional fare, enjoying pie and peas and friendly and welcoming company.
Programme The Retford Group of The Ramblers Association would like to invite you to take a taster walk with them.

community Ward Councillors You may be aware that there are changes in progress to reduce the number of elected councillors to DMBC. The body undertaking the review is The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) this organisation is an independent setup and works on facts put forward by individuals, councils and other organisations. What is under review is the total number of councillors (council size) and warding arrangements. What are not under review are external boundaries of the Borough or external parish boundaries. The LGBCE recommendations will be implanted by Parliament! The LGBE has carried out a consultation to reduce council sizes to 48- 54 elected councillors, this has been done through submissions to LGBCE a result of its findings is imminent. The next step is to identify ward sizes i.e. number of councillor’s to number of voters and this will mean changes in ward size. The LGBE will then visit areas to get residents views and propose its recommendations this proposal will be published in May 2014. The proposals will be based on a statutory criteria i.e. Parishes as building blocks, strong boundaries, public facilities, sensible ward sizes and councillors workloads. There will then be an open consultation on draft recommendations, the LGBCE will then published the final recommendations. Once these recommendations are finalised the Order will be laid before Parliament. We do hope the above is clear. This is a professional approach to 30 30

Please don’t criticise the recycling team for not taking these items, as they do a great job. You will have also noticed that cardboard and all paper are now placed in the blue bag not in the green bin. DMBC retail the cardboard and paper to recycling firms and the funds from this goes towards our Council Tax Bills to try to keep costs down. We should all do our bit to help recycling, be it by not using supermarket plastic bags and not purchasing food overwrapped in plastic if possible make your views known to distributors who cover wrapped items It is pressure from the consumer’s that will change the way distributors think. Musical delight at Society’s November concert
There are some things that naturally go together: eggs and bacon, strawberries and cream, bread and butter, mince pies and Christmas. In the musical world a favourite instrumental pairing is flute and harp and it was this combination that delighted the audience at Tickhill Music Society’s November concert.
Saint-Saens. The final work traced the history of the Tango over the years from 1900 to 1986 to round off a varied and enjoyable evening.
Philip Mottram. T
The concert harp is a noble instrument which can delight the ear when expertly played as it was by Elen Hydref, her fingers and feet totally in command. The more modestly sized flute in the hands of Joshua Batty was played fluently and with consummate skill to exploit the full range of the instrument. Blending together the duo produced some very satisfying music making. Their programme ranged widely, from the opening in

The Local Shops Versus The Supermarket: Discuss I, like many of you living in this area, am an incomer. I have lived and worked here for over 20 years and my ‘children’ (now adults) consider themselves locals.
There are many parallels between the towns of Bawtry, Tickhill and Bircotes and the village I grew up in, for one - there were local shops aplenty. This is no longer the case with Woodbury, which is south of Exeter, and now a small town. The heart of the village, which was grazing, is now completely built on and every large garden has been in-filled, there might be a couple of working farms left, but they are no longer in the village centre, the population must have doubled, the doctors surgery expanded, (sound familiar?) but the shops have gone, as have the garage where Mr Miles made Morgan cars and the cabinet maker who made bespoke kitchens, along with the butcher and two grocers, their properties are all houses, there is a junk shop and a post office with skeleton food supplies, and the hardware store which is just hanging on because business values have slumped so much that they cannot sell it and retire. Everyone shops at the supermarkets in Exmouth which is a car journey away, or the nicer shops in Topsham which has managed to hold off the invasion of a superstore on its outskirts. I really value the family run local businesses in this area. Visitors can’t believe what we have, butchers, wet fish shops, veg shops, hardware and opticians, third generation grocers, florists, hairdressers and so on – you know what we have. They are all in business because of good quality, value, good service and local support. 34 34
BAWTRY TODAY
I am moved to raise the flag and urge more support for our local shop keepers after an article in the Times (Saturday November 2013 News Section) headlined ‘Family shuns supermarkets for year and pockets £900’ basically the Pugh family, from Oxfordshire, decided to do their food shopping in their local shops and market and have reckoned that they are healthier, (lost weight) wealthier and eating better for it. They confounded their expectations by making a saving of £900, by avoiding the clever tempting special-offer marketing techniques of the big supermarkets and simply buying what they needed, buying ingredients and cooking from scratch. They also enjoyed the relationships that were built up with the local suppliers. Some things were dearer, but overall the savings made, more than made up for it. They cut their bill from a weekly £80 - £100 to just £34, and they are putting their savings into a jaunt to a foodie destination! I know there are some things that just cannot be supplied by the local shops - but it’s not a very long list – and we all have to use the bigger shops from time to time, but in my experience I have found that if you ask for an obscure cut of meat, a particular kind of fish, some specialist foodstuff that isn’t on the shelf then it will be supplied, saving time and fuel on a journey into town. Try doing that in one of the BigFour! And the real saving in all of this is the community. Money spent in Tesco, Asda and the other Big Guys disappears into the shareholders pockets (and with Asda these pockets are in the USA as it is owned by a subsidiary of WalMart) – whereas
money spent with the local guys is returned into the community and goes round and round… if you google this phenomenon there are countless economists arguing the maths, the statistics are compelling, one suggests that if you spend £10 in a local shop that sells stuff from local producers the amount of money that goes back into your local economy can be over £50 - it works like this: when you buy a locally-made cake from a local shop, a big part of your money is passed on to the local baker. The shop employs local staff, a local accountant, an electrician etc who spend some of their money at the local garage, the garage owner, who employs local staff buys sausages from the butcher and round and round it goes…. Reducing Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour in your Area Crime levels in South Yorkshire are at their lowest for over 20 years. Therefore, the chances of you being a victim remain low. This is good news! However, we need your help to maintain this. A review of crime in South Yorkshire has highlighted that a third of house burglaries and theft from motor vehicles involve an insecure door or window. By taking the simple steps of ensuring you lock your doors, shut your windows and remove all items from vehicles you can reduce the chance of being a victim. Please help us to help you and keep South Yorkshire a safe place to live and work. More crime prevention advice can be found by visiting the South Yorkshire Police website: www.southyorkshire. police.uk and clicking on the ‘Help and Advice’ section. You can register your belongings for free on Immobilise. Thieves are less likely to steal items that are traceable by the police: https://www.immobilise. com/index.php
Consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your area by contacting your local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101. Increase your home security by checking your locks are secure and meet the TS007 Diamond standard by contacting the Master Locksmiths Association. They will provide details of a local Locksmiths who will be able to advise whether you have an anti-snap, anti-pick and bump resistant lock.
